I've been in twice now. Good big breakfast and coffee. Had a blueberry muffin the next day great. Service is very friendly and fast. Think this might become my local. Come here most days, the food, coffee and service are excellent. It's one of my favourite places . Know matter when I go in, the service is always good, always very smiling friendly staff, even when busy, you feel part of the family.

Inside, out the back and the visible area under the stairs looked very dirty and not cleaned for a very long time. Service was good though, mango smoothie was very nice, bacon and eggs were good although I'm not sure why you would put vinaigrette below the eggs as it made it taste much worse. Some butter or similar on the bread would allow that crispy crust to melt in your mouth too. The rest of the food was good and overall I would come back.. keep it up.

Amazing service. Come here quite often and haven’t been disappointed once. Owner/staff are so nice and friendly, always accommodating us to our comfort !

Good dinner options. Pretty large portions-- both food and beer, so come hungry and thirsty!

The toilet paper holder was locked and I'm assuming the staff lost the key to open it. So the roll of paper was left out...

I came here once when it was Espressoholic but it was a cold dark dirty pit of a place. Since the rebranding the name is now Samick cafe and bar. It is light but moody, really spacious as you know from previous reviews I hate bumping elbows with strangers while I’m eating my food. Eggs Benedict 10/10 yum! They buttered the muffins underneath which was a nice touch. And generous on the bacon which is a really nice change for Wellington. $18 Coffee great 8/10 personally was way to hot for me at the start and took ages to drink. $5.50 Sooo many options for food and drinks I wonder what they do with all the leftovers the cabinet food looks really yum and good pricing too. They have a liquor license too so you can have a cheeky drink. Service was great the wait staff were very pleasant, friendly and looked really happy to be there. Overall I’m really impressed. I’ll be honest I was on my way to a different cafe that I love when I saw this place didn’t have a lot of people in it. If you’re reading this go support them they’re doing great.

Nice staff and friendly. Got some loaded fries and a beer. The fries came with a curry sauce on top which I didn't expect but was quite nice.

One of my favorite bars in welly. I definitely recommend it as the food (especially BBQ chicken) is superb and the staff are amazingly affable.

Go to for samosas every time. The portion size is fantastic and the spices are flavourful. Atmosphere could be better, overall a fantastic place to dine at

We made a last minute booking for an event, we had an afternoon tea for 25 on very short notice. We were given a spacious space, and incredibly caring staff asking if they could help in anyway an going out of their way with service. For an event of such a scale we were left incredibly reassured. Our guests mainly had drinks and we received positive responses from the guests, wedges and fries are great. We will definitely consider booking Espressoholic for future events, thank you for such great customer service and food.

I had the Big Breakfast and my wife had the Healthy Breakfast
It was delicious but it was a bit cold
Coffee was great
Staff are friendly and the coffee is nice

Loved those burger and fries. One of those places where I can find good coffee. Wait time was alright. Would recommend and would like to visit again 👍🏻

Friendly service. It was very early and the place was empty but the front of house was happy and helpful. Good size meal. Food was pretty standard but it was enough to keep us going until dinner! Coffee was pretty good.
Octagon Pie
I love the decor and the style of this place, the food was incredibly good and the eggs were poached to perfection! Beautiful refreshing smoothies and generous sizing. The service was okay but not the best, though I have been before and it was fantastic customer service! Looking forward to going back to try their other options

Recently my girlfriend and I have started coming here while stoned. We enjoy getting a bowl of bacon wedges and watch the other patrons for sport. They certainly get a... diverse mix of people coming late at night.

Our favourite thing to order is the wedges with bacon and melted cheese. God damn was that dish good value for money. Of course the cake deserves an honourable mention. The black forest cake is delicious and the slices are generous.

This place got a retro vibe, there is a lot of posters you can appreciate while you wait for your order. I just don’t like how dark this place is, they could add up more lighting. I loved their Chai latte!
Brooklyn
The details in this place!!! Cool posters and retro decor, kind of comes off a little bit dark and grubby though which makes for a relaxed dining experience. Food wise we noticed an awesome cabinet selection and large range of beverages. Disappointed in the amount of glad wrap used but happy the staff were okay with not giving me a straw.
I ordered a iced chai latte and caramel walnut tart. The chai balanced the sweetness of the tart (boy was it sweet!) so tasty though!
The customer service here was great, good little spot for a late dessert.

Last year in September went to this cafe with a couple of friends, lovely staff got what we ordered except for my hot chocolate..waited 15 minutes then asked a staff how long will my hot chocolate be, I wont be long I will just enquire waited for another 15 minutes then it finally came after more hounding, just so damn annoying when its something as easy as hot chocolate..apparently as soon as they got my money they forgot or didnt care about getting hot chocolate out to me..havent been back since...kerrie

The cute ass little ginger gal is such a lovely person! We came in quite late and she re opened the outdoor area just for us so we could have a smoke. So lovely and understanding. Food here is always top notch :)

I've been coming here for years. Usually a great coffee and wonderful service.
I did have a bad experience on Sunday though. The coffee took an age to arrive, and we never received our 3 cabinet items we paid for, even after asking twice. We waited a total of an hour and 15 minutes before we decided to ask for a refund. Disappointing as they are usually really good. Will come back, I just hope they get on top of it next time!

Dismally disappointing cafe. The cashier miscalculated my friend's simple order twice - had to add it up for her. Our cabinet food took 20 minutes to come out and they forgot the condiments advertised to go with it. I had to send my lasagne back because it was barely luke warm. What a bad cafe in the heart of a thriving cafe scene. Don't go here!

Fast service and fast delivery of our breakfast. Flat white wasn't quite hot enough and I wondered if the large mug actually had a double shot. Pancakes were fluffy, it's a good amount of syrup. Bacon was bland. My partner's healthy breakfast looked good, nice eggs, avocado. Music volume was borderline too loud for easy conversation for us oldies.

The burger meal used to be THE BEST.

They used to use Turkish bread, fries were plentiful and tasty. The quality of all ingredients seemed great also.

Went back recently, plain sesame buns, fries were very salty. Did not live up to the expectation. Also on the pricey side.

A real pity as it used to be one of the real goodies in Wellington.

Came here today with a friend for lunch; being after New Years and not many places open, we knew it would be busy and were advised there would be a wait on food which was understandable.
However, 50 minutes later and after tables that arrived after us had already received their food and left, we asked if ours would be much longer. The waitress checked, told us we were the 4th order, and should be about 20 minutes. Another half an hour, we were offered a free drink for the wait, and 15 minutes after that we were finally given our food - apparently they had lost our order. My friend and I thought the service was poor considering we were sat there for quite a while with many of the staff walking past but none asking if we were waiting for anything. We were also confused as to why we were told our order would be coming soon, but then told our docket was lost?
After an approximate 90 minute wait, I found my corn fritters tasty, but my berry smoothie lacked flavour. My friend ordered the pancakes with bacon, and said she was disappointed and not worth the wait.
May come back another time, but it's unlikely.

Went here with a friend while wondering down Cuba St. The service was a bit off putting, the lady behind the counter was talking to another worker and made us feel like we were not her priority.
I got the tomato and guacamole toast and it was such a let down when the plate arrived. For $12 I had been served two slices of toast along with a tiny amount of guacamole (about three teaspoons worth), some sort of pesto, and sliced tomatoes that looked near the end of their life. I expected more from a central city cafe. Won't be returning to this place.
Hungover Munch Kid
I can only say three because I've never eaten actual food here. All I can say is that the hot drinks are good the cold drinks are not so good. The iced chocolate is just like a big glass of milk with no chocolate flavour and the berry smoothie is like a big glass of yogurt. Staff is always friendly and the atmosphere is nice and the cakes are so good.
Katie Foxall
The cafe is very stylish and the cabinet food is nice. The wedges though are very flavourless and oily and they're stingy on the sauce. Also, the nachos are extremely extremely salty. Would recommend coming for the cakes, but not for nachos or wedges.

This was the second place of three today where we had eggs Benedict. It was pretty busy inside but we managed a seat I the light room.. I enjoyed my food with the eggs poached on top of an English muffin. Slightly cheaper at $16.50 so a really nice place.
Auckland Food Tours
I only went here for coffee but was lured by the cakes...the photo speaks for itself, the best lemon meringue pie I have ever had! The coffee was good and the service was quick and effective
TheAverageDiner
This is a regular haunt for me when I am in the centre during the evening on a week night. Open late when all the bars and restaurants are full.. it's one of the few places you can sit down for a coffee (and cake if you fancy) at this time. The music is what I really like about this place plus they have 2 parts, the dark and light side... friendly staff, nice looking cakes and even though I've never eaten any of their hot meals here looking at other diners they usually look as though they are really enjoying their food.
Team Thomas
I've often spied this funky looking spot from some of my local haunts up Cuba street so last night we thought we would give it a go after a meal. A couple of coffees, (latte and a soy flat white) and a GF brownie from the cabinet.... have to say that the service was fast and friendly.... coffee was good, hot n strong and the brownie was deliciously dense and moist.. just hit the spot. The place is funky decor wise, a mix of black and white, cheap fittings and fixtures but it all works and is tied in nicely with sporadic artwork on the walls, some of which is for sale. Worth a try next time you are around there and I will definitely be there again.

Always a go to in Wellington for locals and visitors alike Espressoholic is kind of an Alice in wonderland cafe with a variety to eat and amazing art and decorations to look at.
The cakes here are to die for and because they are open late I usually am seen popping in to get some delicious carrot cake or Black Forest gateau 🙌🏻
Absolutely terrible experience here today! As lots of places were closed being New Years Day, I thought Espressoholic would be a good bet to take my friends as I have enjoyed it in the past. The four of us went in and sat down, then got up to order. They were VERY busy, and stressed it seemed. When we ordered, there was no indication of a wait time. We expected maybe 20 mins or so, considering how busy it was. After 45 minutes, I went to the counter to inquire where our meals were, and they said we were next in line. However when they arrived, one of the meals was incorrect and had to be sent back. My boyfriend finally got his burger after an hour of waiting. What disappointed me the most about this experience was that there was no indication of food wait time, no communication to us about our incorrect meal, and no apology for the appalling wait. The food was average- certainly not worth the wait: 2 chicken burgers, a potato rosti, and a chicken salad. Will never come back.

Espressoholic has been around for many years in two key locations. Its legendary hot chocolates and counter food have satisfied hungry customers until late the day for a long time. Yesterday, we ordered lunch from the menu. The main café area smelled of cigarette smoke wafting in so we sat in the adjoining room. I really enjoyed my grilled halloumi with tomato, plenty of avocado and pesto on an English muffin. My friend’s creamy mushrooms on toasted brioche looked really big and she said she'd happily order it again. The coffee (Bach Espresso) is average but was served in good time. A good meal with ok service in a funky environment.

Mostly good food, service and general atmosphere. Their cakes and desserts are the best especially the berry caramel tart!! But recently had a very bad experience when i ordered a hot chocolate, it honestly tasted like a watered down ,luke warm milo with none to barely any flavour i couldn't even finish it
Sophie
Great atmosphere, personally loved the music and the addition of jazzy Christmas songs (may not be to everyone's taste but loved it). Muffin was a little dry but still nice, partner loved his pasta though. Want to try the huge lemon meringue pie next time!

A constant favourite of mine, pretty much A+ every time. Great coffee, food and the service. Have a great range of food on the menu and cabinet food is also yum!

Went here today and we're told there would be a 20 minute wait which we were fine about. The 20 mins turned into about an hour and when we got served our food it was just a quick slap up, it was terrible. For $18 we were spectacularly ripped off. Will not be going there again, and wouldn't recommend it. The cabinet food did look quite good and I think if they had just said that they could not take any more orders and serve only the cabinet food for a while they would have caught up and maybe have been able to serve better quality food. I seriously want my money back.

Best cafe in the world!. This cafe has excellent value food, coffee, staff and beer.
Caters well to a family meal or a late night gathering. 10/10

Went in today and ordered the chicken burger (which I've had before and enjoyed). Unfortunately, when it came out, the chicken was raw, so I took it back to the counter. I expected they'd perhaps make a fresh burger, however, that was not the case. After a couple of minutes I was presented with the same plate - they had simply microwaved the raw chicken. The end result was a toughened piece of meat that resembled rubber - completely inedible, could barely get my knife to cut through it. For an $18 burger I expect it a) not to be raw and b) if it is, for it not to be microwaved beyond recognition to remedy the situation.

Delicious Cooked Food!. Great range of cooked food for brunch! Staff seem rushed and busy but it doesn't effect the quality of the food and I've found that the food is good and the same every single time. Hipster environment that thrives in Wellington and a nice place to sit down with friends.

You're bound to find something you like!. Espressoholic is situated along the iconic Cuba st in Wellington and is the perfect cafe to stop off for brunch or lunch. I can't comment on dinner but I loved the lunch menu and the selection of delicious things behind the counter. I took the all day breakfast option and had eggs on toast with mushrooms and avocado. Everyone I was eating with at Espressoholic enjoyed their meals too. Very accommodating staff (I told them I needed my food quickly so I could get to the airport) who ensured our food was served promptly. I will return when I'm next in Wellington.

Oh Espressoholic, you used to be so good. We wandered in for a late lunch today—as I haven't been to espressoholic since its glory days on Courtenay Place and was curious to see if it was still as good as I remember. I was stoked to find that they still serve the white chocolate cheesecake (with yoghurt), which I am happy to report is still AMAZING. Unfortunately, that (and the friendly service) was about as good as it got. The food looked good but didn't taste great, and the coffee was average. Will go back for the white chocolate cheesecake, but that's about it.

Thought I had simply had a bad experience and should try again. Nope, this place is consistently bad. Disgusting cake that tasted old and stale. my friends brownie resembled a dry chunk of dirt and tasted much the same. For such an iconic cafe they set the bar extremely low. Wont be back.

I have just came home from a lovely meal out not at Espressoholic... Thought it would be nice to go somewhere different for desert and coffee one word summed it up STALE I got the black forest cake and was extremely disappointed had two bites and couldn't finish the rest it cost me $8.50! I will not be coming here again!!!!

Tbh the only issue I have with the place is their service. I get the impression that the staff are uninterested, I feel they can be a bit snappy though I do admit they are pretty busy. Even so a smile and general courtesy isn't too much to ask for instead of being herded off after you've placed your order.

Other than that they make a bangin' beef lasagne, my all time fave. Cakes are also good, coffee is consistent .
Cee Jay
Good food, most of the place is set it in a dark yet cozy environment.

The staff have always been polite, although they seemed a bit aloof at times

Excellent long blacks, this place was the first to introduce me to a good blend and brew.
Fredrick Mantle
This isn't the nicest of places but, they serve alot of nice food both on their menu and in their cabinets, The doughnuts are excellent with your coffee. I've had them a few times now and they're always just as good as the last time. and the slices are great too, unfortunately they're breakfast the one time I got one was sub-standard really, Just plain :/
But the service is pretty good from most of their foh, I think they need to get them looking a little cleaner
Sarita Guppy
Excellent food, both cabinet and off the menu. Went in there with about 8 people and all received wonderful meals. Would definately recommend to anyone keen for a decent coffee/coke/shake and meal or snack! I got the nachos and fries and they were nothing but amazing!
Magdalena Lischka
Even one star is too much! Worst service in Wellington City! Starting with the staff, finishing with the manager. Food not fresh. Coffee bad. Toilets dirty. Not my first time but definitely my last time at Espressoholic. Why was I bothered to try it again? In hope that things improved. Please close it, it done its years!

Is Esspressoholic a cafe or a last resort school for delinquents? If you want to relive the glory days, then head out to the back area for a coffee, and feel the culture of the local wellington high school life skills class.

in fact, maybe the word pound is better than school, because as soon as you're in theyre trying to shoo you out!

Perhaps one redeeming quality is some good service, but crack a funny joke not to their taste, and you'll be out before you realised they shortchanged you!!!
Brendan MacAteer
Cuba Street is a great place to go for a coffee. And Espressoholic is good place to go on Cuba. They do good coffee. They really do give a toss about their coffee! And they back it up with a good selection of excellent cakes. It's a great spot to put your feet up for a while if your marching about town. IF you like good coffee and stuffing your cakehole that is. Which I do!

A group of 6 of us rocked up one night around 8.30pm for dinner, we were greeted by the most friendliest and welcoming staff. We were surprised at how fast our meals were served. The food was delicious! Price is good and quality of food & presentation is great! Cute little cafe on Cuba street. Thanks guys! We really enjoyed our night out.

Lovely staff who are always friendly and welcoming, very quick service and consistently exceptional coffee :) the gluten free pancakes are better than regular ones!!! and the wedges are always yummy, espressoholic is my regular and they treat their regulars very well, the whole counter staff always says hello when i come in and they always remember what i order! best cafe in wellington!!
Sue
Had the most shocking service here tonight. Was with two others (three middle aged women). We ordered and sat down. Drinks arrived and I politely said "Is there another drink coming". The place was really busy and I just wanted to confirm they had the order correct as the woman who served us was training. He responded by throwing his hands in the air and saying aggressively and nastily "I only have two hands".
I was too shocked to respond but my sister confronted him at the counter. She said something like " I didn't appreciate you talking to my sister like that. He swore and abused her!
They just lost three customers who frequent there often.
You are providing a service and there is a level of respect required with that!
Harriet Rowland
We had two different meals which were both nice. The coffee was good and absolutely loved the outside courtyard, it had a lovely atmosphere. We will definitely go back.

Espressoholic, I've only been here once since being down here in Wellington for a year, it's a nice piece of artwork (looks like a nice environment) I have to say some of the food inside wasn't the best, but it was eatable at the time, the coffee is ok, and the service was ok.

In my opinon Espressoholic looks better than it serves customers.
Dana
By far the worst food and coffee I have EVER had. My partner and I went there for lunch today I ordered the nachos and an iced mocha my partner ordered fries and an iced mocha. The nachos were absolutely cremated the corn chips were black and the cheese was beyond burnt and had crusted all over the plate. Looked and tasted like they had been microwaved to a crisp. Completely inedible! My partners chips were mostly brown and tasted like they had been cooked in extremely dirty oil, again completely inedible. As for the iced mochas I have never tasked anything so putrid in all my life. There was a layer of coffee at the bottom and what just tasted like chocolate milk at the top, obviously wern't mixed at all. I don't think you should have to pay $6.50 for a drink you have to mix yourself with a straw! As for the staff their was an extremely off putting man who looked like he was going through some sort of midlife crisis judging by the way he was dressed dripping almost cup loads of sweat from his forehead all over the counter etc and he was the one bringing peoples meals out to the tables if he wasn't enough to put you off the food itself sure would!
Vincent G
Preferred the old location, but they still do good coffee and cakes with cream. Mmmmmm

I seem to still frequent Midnight Espresso more, just because of the proximity of the two now. If it was still on Courtenay Place and I was down that way, it'd be my local
Dan
I planned a spur of the moment coffee excursion to town with some friends to celebrate one of them getting his C.A certificate. It was about 10.30pm.
The first cafe we went to (which I wont name) seemed genuinely unimpressed that we had walked in and rudely informed us that the kitchen was closed and he "guessed he could do a few more coffees" We weren't really feeling too welcomed so we promptly headed down the street and found that Espressoholic were still open and smiling. My coffee was great and we were all raving about the various slices and cakes that we purchased. I got the lemon meringue and it was fantastic. The vibe was good too and the staff were really chilled out and friendly, even at 10.30pm! Highly recommended

I don't live in wellington but was visiting with my partner. We are very fussy when it comes to breakfast & coffees. The coffee was a perfect blend, not over extracted like most. The 'BIG BREAKIE' was very filling & had loads of flavour not to mention the mixture of ingredients to top that. Very well priced. The two women that served us were very pleasant. I will be back in the future & recommend this place to anyone in wellington or travelling to wellington. Excellent
EatingBuddy
Great staffs serve here, with good quality brunch served all the time! Nice place at the back for a nice brunch out with mates or just hanging out for coffee or tea.

I'm also kind of disappointed that they moved from Courtenay Place since it was such an awesome location with all the graffiti on the walls; but I still think it's a great place. Good coffee and service.
Biggie C
Moved from Courtney place where I would give it 5 stars - now seems out of place on Cuba. Much quieter but they have tried to keep the same look and feel and it just makes for a dark, plain cafe. Coffee and food are good - but sadly as a place I would always go to on Courtney - this no longer ranks on a place to return to.
