Review Peking House Restaurant - Wellington

had a wonderful evening enjoying hot pot! Food was very flavorful and plentiful! Definitely will be back soon to try more dishes on the menu!

Great experience here: the hot pot is traditional Beijing Style with fresh sliced lamb roll. Please remember to pre-book the duck when booking the seat, we only could ordered the half duck as we did not pre-book the duck while calling them. The duck is really crispy and the meat is so tasty. Highly recommend.

Great authentic Chinese food. If you like 炸酱面, this is the place to go. Service is great too.

Fantastic food and service. Great traditional steamboat hotpot, one of the best in Wellington if not New Zealand.

First time we had dined in, fantastic experience. Attentive friendly staff who took the time to help us choose suitable dishes, especially as one or our party had unusual dietary requirements. The whole Peking duck was lovely but the unexpected standout were the dry fry green beans, highly recommended.

Great food and service. Lots of awesome dishes to choose from, the ones I had were tasty and authentic. Peking duck is absolutely lovely! and you get lots of nice bits of meat and pancakes. Friendly attentive staff.

We go to Peking House several times a year as a group for a shared duck meal. I think they do the best Peking duck in Wellington and the rest of their offerings are also always very good. Allow one duck between 4 people along with other mains. The staff are great, it is byo wine. A bonus is that they allow groups to use several Dine out cards.

Four of us had dinner at Peking House last night. The restaurant was very busy with almost every table full but the service was still good. We shared deep fried stuffed mushrooms with pork and spicy dumplings to start. The dumplings had just the right amount of chilli oil to get our taste buds ready for the four main courses. The braised chicken with dates and chestnuts was most notable for the texture of the chestnuts and sweetness from the dates. The garlic king prawns were lightly steamed and tasty and the orange beef was quite spicy with chillis added. The least notable dish for me was the sliced pork belly in chilli bean sauce as the pork seemed overcooked. Overall, this was a great meal. Although BYO wine and an Entertainment Book discount first attracted us to Peking House, we'll definitely return.

Visited here tonight for dinner. Service was pretty good. However, wasn’t impressed with the food and the flavors. We ordered vegetable noodles, spring rolls, salt and pepper squid and scallops with vegetables. Noodles and spring rolls were ok, squid was good, however scallops were very average. It almost tasted like canned scallops unfortunately.
Have had a better Chinese food in the city for sure. Not sure if I would be going here again.

Very nice, friendly, and attentive people, and the food is good too. I tried both hot pot and a la carte dishes on different occasions, and I prefer a la carte dishes.

I thought the place was quite nice. We dined with young children and they were well catered for. All the food came out piping hot. I'd go again. Why is the 'hot pot' option not on the menu??

I'm not sure why this restaurant scores quite so badly. To be honest I think it deserves a lot more. Previous reviews seem to score it down primarily because of service but my experience hasn't been at all bad. Ive been maybe 6-8 times, and sure there is a slight coldness in the reception but try doing half a dozen Chinese on Dom Rd in Auckland. Its possibly my imagination but I sometimes feel that the more authentic the restaurant the "colder" the service. And I suspect that part of the problem is that our idea of what constitutes brilliant service isn't the same the world over. Its rather arrogant of us perhaps to to expect that to be the case. I'd much rather have good food than smarmy westernised service.

Peking House clearly is very popular with student demographics, especially asian students who always seem to fill up tables gorging themselves with the steamboat which, from memory is one one of those "all you can eat .." type of things.

Ive never really been disappointed with anything Ive ordered here. We often have dumplings and spring onion pancakes to start and I like to have duck (three course) but I also focus on the vegetable dishes which I love - especially the aubergine.

The wine list is basic. Last time I enjoyed a Chinese rice wine to accompany the meal - its richness seemed to suit the food but please don't blame me if you don't! like it - its an acquired taste but one worthwhile developing.

Essentially an OK Chinese restaurant, worth trying and worth more than its apparent tomato ranking.

This was one of the worst experiences I've ever had in dining at Wellington restaurant. I booked before hand, but when I came, no staff came to greet me and I had to stand looking for attention from the manager. After stating my name and booking, they started preparing the table. They dropped the chopsticks a few times when they brought them to us ( they changed it though), and we had to ask for water twice. We ordered dumplings, that was ok, but the main disappointment was the main. We used the voucher worth $51.8 (which they sold for $19) that said half of a duck but I didn't see even 1/3 of a duck there. And it didn't taste good neither. It took us 75 mins to finish our dinner, mostly came from waiting on dishes to be served. We came home with hungry stomachs and had to eat something else. Won't recommend anyone to buy the voucher deal.

Chose to eat here with a group of 10 for my 50th birthday recently. Had never been here before but wonder now why it has taken me so long to dine here. It was just the best night, the staff were helpful, courteous and nothing was too much trouble. They let us bring our own birthday cake in and provided plates and forks to eat it from without any cost whatsoever. The food was delicious, fresh and tasty, my favourite entree the deep fried scallops as the batter was so light and not hard and dry and this allowed the flavour of the scallops to come through. The ribs are also excellent as well as the lemon chicken, chop sueys, bean curd, cutlets, chicken dishes.... everything we had was just A1. Thanks for helping to make my birthday one of the best I have had Peking House.

This place is an absolute joke. We arrived and got no greeting from any of the wait staff. After 15 minutes with just 3 tables to look after we finally got menus. The food was very disappointing, grey looking meat and very tasteless food, even though we were hungry we just couldn't stomach this food. I would never, ever visit this place again and felt resentful for even paying for the meal, it was below acceptable. Quite possibly the worse meal I've had.

The duck dish we had (which was recommended by the waitress!) was disgusting. Worst Chinese food we've ever had. We did not eat it.
There was no enquiry by the waitress as to our satisfaction with the meal or WHY we hadn't eaten it. When I paid the bill there was NO conversation what-so-ever by the waitress.
As a visitor to Wellington this was a very disappointing experience as it was a 60th Birthday dinner . :( !!!

We ordered 3 dishes. Based on reviews, I was looking forward to the Duck in Plum Sauce. It is boneless duck, battered and deep fried, covered in a plum jam tasting sauce. Very fatty and sweet. We also ordered Sweet and Sour Pork, my daughters choice. Our takeaway does better. There was no sour, just a sickly sweet goo. The 3rd dish was also my daughters choice and the best, a noodle dish with a lovely and uncommon smokey flavour.
The wine was served in glasses that I haven't seen since the 80's, tiny little round shaped things. While ordering drinks meant summoning staff instead of them noticing we were without, they were very friendly and helpful when the came.

Wow, great service, friendly staff and so polite. Food was so tasty, even the kids loved it. Unfortunately they had no pork buns tonight but I'm guessing they were so popular and yummy that they ran out, would have loved to have tried them, maybe next time as we will definitely be back. We had a 5 course banquet and it was delicious, very authentic Chinese food. I'd love to come back to sample the rest of the menu as it looks divine.
