Review Rams - Wellington

Emily
Chilli oil dumplings were good! The dumplings sit in the chili oil which I realised was more like a broth. It definitely had chilli oil in it tho. Still VERY flavourful. I didnt have rice but I think the chilli oil sauce would go really well with some rice. Staff are friendly, atmosphere was fine. The restaurant is on the smaller size but it didnt pose any inconveniences. The rest of the menu sounds so good and I definitely want to come back for more!

Best chilli oil dumplings in town! Their salt and pepper tofu and the potato tower are also amazing. Lots of decent vegetarian options.

I think these are the best dumplings I have tried…….we got the pan fried and the chilli oil pork dumplings, both were very yummy - very happy with our dinner tonight!!!
Derek
Heard these folks do the best dumplings, and its true! Portion sizes bigger than the prices, a little hole-in-the-wall place you'd easily walk right past. Definitely my kinda place. Chilli oil dumplings, prawn crackers and a steamed pork bun.

Absolutely delicious food! This could be Wellington’s Spicy House 🤤🤤 If you are from Auckland you’d know how crazily delicious Spicy House food on Dominion Rd is. Everything here is delicious 🤤 Cant name one and do injustice to others on the menu ❣️
Nina Smith
Food was nice, friendly staffs and portion was good too for town price. Needs to ventilate the place while cooking.

From a few other Chinese stalls and restaurants in Wellington I tried, Ram's was probably the closest to the Chinese cuisine I am used to. Orange beef and Eggplants with potato were cooked nicely and arrived in 5-10 minutes. My only complaints are that boiled dumplings were a bit too salty and the rice didn't have too much flavour.

Chili oil dumplings. They're with the trip by themselves. Everything else is fine, hole-in-wall fare. Which is a good thing. But those dumplings will change your life. Or at least your dinner plans.
Kat Petra
We loved everything here, it was a delicious and well priced meal. We had vegetarian dumplings in chili oil, the potato stack, and spicy garlic eggplant. Highly recommended.
Mayur Chandra
Best dumplings in Wellington. My favourite Chicken and mushroom dumplings pan fried 🥟
Areti Alexandrou
Interesting menu, potato pancake is amazing; the food came out a little cold, the dumplings were indeed yummy and full of chilli, yum.
Sara Bryan
Delicious and quality food. Though they're famous for their dumplings, the (spicy!) szechuan pepper chicken is THE most delicious fried chicken in the entire city.
Alys R
Lovely service, extensive menu, tasty food and reasonable prices.
Edward Brown
Still the best chilli oil dumplings by far! orange beef and bok choy also a must try very underrated and will always be one of my favourites! Very friendly and welcoming staff keep it up team!
Tracey Hooper-Newton
Chilli dumplings every time. Not as good as I remember them from 2 years ago but still very tasty and great value.

Tried the chicken fried noodles at lunch for $11.50 - a wonderful dish on a cold day. Cheap & cheerful. Was a little bit too sauce towards the end. Had a good amount of chicken.

I always struggle for good Chinese food in wellington and Ram's did disappoint. The dumplings, as well as the rest of the food, were only so so.

What I ate: vegetarian dumplings in chili oil, potato stack, salt & pepper tofu.

The dumplings were ok, but the chili oil needed more garlic. I did not find it spicy at all. The oil needs Sichuan peppercorns and more chili to make it really spicy. It was also very vinegary, which I did not like. The vinegar should be on the table so you can add it to your taste, not in the chili oil itself. I was looking forward to this dish but was disappointed.

The potato stack was like finely shredded potato chips stacked high. There was a sweet chili sauce poured over it and bits of cilantro throughout. This was ok, but if I order it again, I will ask for the sauce on the side.

The salt & pepper tofu was good. The tofu was crispy on the outside and soft and creamy on the inside. Excellent tofu! Could have used more seasoning, but apart from that really good.

Service: good. Don't be afraid to wave down servers. They are attentive once you get their attention.

The setting may seem less glamorous - this is no high-end venue - but the food is delicious! Had the duck and jellyfish salad, dumplings in chilli oil, and salt-and-pepper squid. 5 Stars for each. Rams will definitely be on my list of go-to restaurants!
Zen Neethling
Had some vegetarian dumplings and their sweet and sour eggplant with some friends those two dishes were enough for the 3 of us and were all great, the sweet and sour eggplant really stole the show for me

ordered for delivery via deliver easy, the food arrived 10 minutes earlier than advised (thankfully) and was piping hot. will order from them again

Looks lively & exciting, is an irritatingly disappointing place.

3 of us, made to sit at a table for 2 (beside the counter, with barely any space so every time a group or even the staff goes by, you get to physically feel like an obstacle) despite having available tables that'd properly seat us. No, those weren't reserved and nor did anyone else come in to be seated there. Shows how much you're valued as a customer, just made to sit wherever profitable for them by a man that seemed to be the manager.

The place is crazy busy, fine, we get it - a Saturday night, lots of noise from many people. . . no fault of the staff. But their ignorance in noticing you when you're literally calling them in a clear view at close distance... very much frustrating. Then, unclean dishes, taken away but not replaced, unclear item on menu... fine, ask for clarification... got misinformation, led to wrong order, led to them claiming they just were unclear; didn't misinform - like that makes it all cool. One of the ladies (seemed like a supervisor?) was actually helpful & polite as you'd expect... and, I do appreciate her.

The Chilli & Garlic Stir Fry was so greasy... it was literally the over sweet 'Sweet Chilli' sauce outta the bottle into the wok with chicken & the rest. So close to being uneatable, most of it didn't leave the plate; we just ate the chicken. Also, the Singapore Fried Noodles reeked of the reused oil but tasted just Not-Too-Bad enough for us to consume it.

Perhaps the dumplings should've been our go-to, but we won't be returning. If you do go here, make use of the BYO option, I'd say... or better yet, try the Night Market or the other restaurants.

Overall disappointed. The dumplings were tasty but the barbecued pork was dry and cold. Had obviously been microwaved but not enough. Everything cane out at the same time. Even the dumplings which we had ordered as an entree.

Generally nice quality with quite authentic taste (although don't know which branch of Chinese foods it belongs to). There's one thing you shouldn't miss: the hop & spicy pot.

3.5/5 Taste
3/5 Display
4/5 Quantity
3/5 Customer Service

Dumplings in spicy sauce in Wellington

These are quite common in Auckland and these tastes better in Auckland.
I couldnt give 4 because i had those dumplings for dessert after having 2 burgers and poutine for dinner.
I was also drunk.
Courtneyyurquhart
Not worth it. Was expecting a really good meal but everything was bland. The spring rolls were soggy with no crunch the dumplings were weirdly salty and my stir fry had a very bland sauce that basically made it water with average vegetables. Don’t waste $60 like I did.

4 adults ate here for dinner. The waitress was very friendly. The food only took minutes to arrive on ordering. Tasty, fresh and authentic Chinese. Very reasonable prices. Well presented. Toilets are very very clean too. ( which is a refreshing change) Fabulous.. Well come here again. Thanks Ram’s.

Good place to load before you rave and get drunk! Really cheap as food nothing really special - good location tho and friendly service. I had lemon chicken with rice which came out really fast. The place is jam packed with youngsters. Highly recommended!

Stopped by for lunch on Friday, wasn't pressed for choice down Cuba st amongst the 'good value' Asian cuisine available. Ram' s was licenced so with decision made we ordered a pair of Chinese staples, Sweet & Sour Pork and Orange Beef.
Service was prompt and the meals and drinks arrived without delay. We're they the best examples we've had, unfortunately not, but adequate for a quick lunch on the run.

Like everyone else, I mostly hit up Rams for their Chilli Oil Dumplings - which are pretty amazing! If you make it past those, though - everything else I've ever had has been quite good too.

Ram's is my Partner's favourite place for Sweet and Sour Pork.

Service can be a little odd, dishes very rarely arrive at the same time, in my experience. And it's not exactly cheap and cheerful. But the flavours of the food choices will keep you coming back!

M a huge dumplings lover and was searching for a good dumpling place in Wellington. Especially the prawn 🍤 dumplings. I was recommended many other places but all were closed, today being Sunday. Last option was Rams, the dumplings were good but I ve had better dumplings. The presentation was not at all good. I ordered steamed prawn chive egg dumplings, they were good. You can definitely have these if you are really hungry. My brother ordered chilli sauce dumped chicken dumpling, again, I ve had better before. The udon noodles were good. Then we ordered fried chicken dumpling, to be true, don't bother to order these.

In all, you ll enjoy food there only if you are really really hungry. Dumpling lovers will know the difference like I did.

Rams dumplings in chilli oil = YES!!! I loved the chilli so much I kept spooning it in... 10/10 mean as garlic burps post feed😝 couples beware! I will be back fo sho - just with some Extra chewing gum when I'm done!

Four of us had dinner here. The Szechuan Pepper Chicken, Chilli and Ginger Chicken and Fried Eggplant were all delicious. Service was quick and attentive. We had to dine quickly to attend an event, and on a busy Saturday night without a booking, they accommodated us superbly. Food is very competively priced, just $68 for four mains. Recommended.

Good things about the restaurant:
Salt and Pepper squid - delicious and crispy
Chilli dumplings - right amount of spice in the chilli sauce and the dumplings were a generous size.
The service was prompt and relatively friendly.
Things I didn't like:
There was no atmosphere and it felt like an old diner but that is common in moderately priced restaurants.
The Bok Choy was watery and the duck was underwhelming with more bones than meat
Overall not a bad place for dinner but nothing to rave about.
Vicki Wong
The home of the chilli oil dumplings! Pretty much a staple on every table there's plenty of different dumpling fillings to sit inside the chilli oil goodness. The sharpness of the vinegar offsets what could be a heavy sauce and balances nicely against the heat of chilli, garlic and salt. We also ordered the sizzling seafood hot plate. Generous in sauce this is packed full of flavour as well as juicy prawns and fresh fish. $5 for corkage if you like to BYO your tipple as well.

Met friends for dinner. Arrived about 5:30pm on a Thursday. It was quite but filled quickly around 6pm.

Myself and my partner ordered bok choi with garlic and ginger, vegetarian chilli oil dumplings and pan fried vegetarian dumplings (x8). We just had water with the meal. (Food: $37.50)

Our friends ordered a number of dishes including the potato stack.

My partner enjoyed her vegetarian dumplings. Nice and lightly pan fried. Mine (Chilli oil) were not as good as I had hoped. Good amount of chilli but a strong vinegar taste too. Nice but a little stronger than I would have preferred. The dumplings were ok, but overall the dish was average.

The bok choi was fine, bit more flavour would have been nice which would have made it much more enjoyable; it lacked something, seasoning perhaps. It was a little bland. Big portion though.

The potato stack was really nice. Like little chips with sweet chilli sauce drizzled over. Very morish.

The service isn't the best. It was hard to get their attention. They gave me pork dumplings by mistake, but realised, and came back to take them away; but with no explanation. I put 2 & 2 together and asked if they'd given me pork ones, I was as told 'yes' and asked if I'd eaten any; when I said 'yes only one' he just turned and walked away. They also didn't bring one of the plates of dumplings my friends ordered. They did get them though eventually. I noticed another table complaining about a mistake on their order too. So, it's a little unorganised and they're not that responsive.

Some of the other dishes coming out looked really good.

Overall it was ok and we enjoyed our meal, but I wouldn't rush back.

Great place for dumplings. Wide range of flavours - pork and fennel are really good.... and the Chili Oil dumplings are tasty without burning....

Because Lo Mein was closed tonight it was a close alternative to visit Rams and I was disappointed by the service and the staffs attentiveness to asking us where we would like to be seated and what we would like to be eating. The food was however very tasty and also very large in portion size. I would recommend the chicken noodles they're great.

One of my favourite restaurants in Welly. Good service, big serving size and very friendly staffs. I ordered the chilli oil dumplings and it is a must try! The other dish I ordered was the chilli hot beef which I did not really like as it was too oily. Would definitely come back and try their other dishes.
Persis Priya Harris
Amazing except for the fact it's sometimes hard to get a table... All the dishes we tried were good. Chilli oil dumpling and a crispy brinjal dish are my super favs
Rosie Wilson-Burgess
Some of the tastiest food I've ever eaten! Can't go wrong, the service isn't the best but it's what I expect at a small Asian place. Seriously good food though
Collin Jerome
Amazing food & even when the place is full the food doesn't take very long. One of my favourite restaurants in Wellington, I would highly recommend this place to everyone.

Got a takeaway once and ate in once after rave reviews of the chilli oil dumplings. They're... Decent. The soup is very heavy on vinegar making it quite harsh. I got the prawn and egg dumplings which were good. Duck and pork on rice was fine, can get similar in lots of different places around Wellington. Overall, was OK.

Ram's seems to be the place to dine at on a Friday night as it was packed and the wait was 20 minutes for a table. The menu is extensive with all the Chinese classics and favourites. We choose the dumplings in chilli oil as it is listed as the most popular dish. The dumplings were plump and flavoursome. I hope to be back soon with others to share and try the other dishes.

Chili oil dumplings are to die for! Tom yum soup was good but needs more meat and veggies. Will definitely come back to taste the other dumpling fillings

Here is my favourite restaurant for you.

All you feel here is peaceful

a lot of young people come here for dinners

the most attractive point of this restaurant is its decilous food

I bet you'll fall in love with it~

well, you dont have to worry about your wallet

coz the price there is so reasonable!
Chengcheng Jiang
i like their dumplings, 😁nice service , and good atmosphere
!

Amazing Chilli Oil Dumplings!! Had takeaway on our first visit and we were very impressed. Owner is really friendly and helpful and encouraged us to try the dumplings the first time we went - glad he did! Food is always fresh, hot and delicious. This will be our new 'local'.

I just can't seem to get enough of Ram's! Normally I don't go for dumplings because I'm a huge texture person, but these dumplings haven't disappointed yet!

Both times I've been, I've ordered the lunch special (15 dumplings for about $12) - Beef & Onion in Chilli Oil - steamed. YUM!

The only note is that they can take quite a while to make the food and bring it out - so if you've got an hour for lunch, then this place is great :)
CJ Winter
I used to come here all the time - they used to do the BEST hot and sour soup and chilli oil dumplings. I think Management must have changed because the last 3 times ive been here the food has been inconsistent and terrible. The hot and sour soup is just peppery and awful, when I order the dumplings they ask what flavour (this was never an option before) and the dumpling pastry is too thick and just not good at all.
Do not think i will be coming here again, 3 bad experiences is 3 times too many chances given. And they also no longer give rice with the soup when you order takeaway.
Terrible.

Who doesn't love dumplings? my European friends have always commented that they love the dumplings here. But I never took any notice to their comments. 'What would they know?' I kept telling myself ... as most people would not mind paying premium prices for dumplings from House of Dumplings which are NOT authentic. These dumplings at Rams is the real deal!. and are definitely great value for money for Wellington standards if you come here for lunch. I decided to pop by one day as I was craving some dumplings. I was taken back how succulent they were.

check out my website for an indepth review.

Yum. Good quality chinese food. Loved the mongolian beef. Wish I tried the chilli oil dumplings though. Will go back to rams. Food is tasty with good balanced flavours.
Malcolm Turner
This tiny restaurant has great flavours in Chinese food. The Chili Dumplings are really tasty, but note that they take 10 minutes to cook. So if you order other dishes you will get everything at once! As we did.... despite asking for the dumplings to be served before the other 2 main courses.
However, it was all very tasty. We had Crispy Squid and Kung Po Beef ( instead of chicken for a change!). These came with steamed rice included, and were both really as good as we have had for a long time. BUT... there is a lot of Garlic, Chilli, and other flavours... make sure that you eat as a couple or be prepared to sleep alone!
Prices were very reasonable including modest corkage on BYO wine, and service was very fast! The pile-up of all 3 dishes within minutes of ordering was not a problem for us, but if you want to take more than 30 minutes over Dinner, make it clear that you want delay (or ..when I next return, I will order the dumplings and when they arrive, order other food)

Recently, Rams is changed a young and friendly boss & chef. The chilli oil dumplings is still delicious. Cumin lamb and lemon chicken is amazing. I will be back!😍

One of my favourite places in the city. It is open late and is always busy. The chilli oil dumplings are to die for. The mapu tofu is classic. They offer all of the traditional chinese dishes that you want and they do it well. The food takes time. Like any good, busy restaurant . . . you have to wait a bit - but it is well worth it. The wine list is typical of a chinese place that has one wine rep to sell everything. But it is fine. It can take some time to get your drinks after ordering - so follow up with the busy waitress or stand up and go to the counter. Most regulars do this. I suggest BYO!!!! This solves both problems. I can't rate this place enough. The decor is functional and the service is fine - typical of an Asian place. The food is what makes this place!

Was very disappointed. We went here because our restaurant of choice was closed. After finally settling on a dish I asked the staff if I could have it extra hot because I love my spice. After waiting a good 15 minutes, 5 of which the chef was ringing the bell to come and pick up my meal but the waiter was far too busy talking to a friend resulting in the chef bringing my meal out to me. When the conversation finally ended the waiter came and asked if we wanted anything to drink and then told me my three choices were out of stock then he asked if it was spicy enough, I told him it was fine (it wasn't spicy enough, but I didn't want to be rude) and then he laughed at me! Absolutely disgusted. As for the dish, it was terribly bland and I will not be returning. The only reason I'm giving this a 2 instead of a 1 is because my partner enjoyed his dish.

Ordered online. Food was late, which I can forgive, but once I started eating the food, I realised how terrible it was. Half cold and really, really bland. I have had better food while I was in the hospital. I will never be ordering from here ever again.

Just ate at Rams Restaurant tonight. Food is absolutely gorgeous. Generous portions for the price, very fresh and clean tasting. Well cooked and flavour combinations work well. Appetisers were... very appetising! Deep fried squid was very tender and crispy, served with a sweet and sour dipping sauce that was to die for. Iced drinks and bubble tea were a great match with the meals.

Highly, highly recommended for anyone after a sufficient and delicious Asian meal.
Emma Hurley
I came here on night with a friend for a meal. The cuisine was great - we ordered dumplings which were fantastic, and the fried rice was really. The service was very friendly, attentive and quick. The prices were also very reasonable considering the amount of food that you get and the taste. I would recommend this restaurant and will be back again.

We were on a three day stopover from Sydney and went one night with friends. Were lucky to get the last table. Cannot believe the value for such amazing food. Loved it all, but the roast port......yum!
Was so good went back for a last bowl of noodle soup an hour before our departure. Will be back!
