Review Dixon Street Delicatessen - Wellington

The food we got was pretty good. Two of us got the pancakes with bacon and banana which was really good but the pancake was more of a crispy crepe than a pancake but taste was on point. Coffee and milkshakes were great too.

Great food, especially the vegetable soup. We had tea for two and the cups were warmed - so nice on a chilly day! Service was friendly and fast. The fudge was great too :) Relaxed atmosphere and reasonable pricing.

Upmarket ambiance, friend staff members, with good food to match. We tried the baked salmon, and Chicken potato cake with side salads each. Very happy with what we get. Unfortunately, although the interior is nice with old/old-school ornaments, such effect/design/concept has been in almost every café and restaurant we visited; hence, it start to lost its appeal.

Had a nice lunch here. Staff were friendly and attentive. Was able to bring my meal out before the wife and kids as I had an appointment. Fantastic eggs bene and good coffee. No complaints on the day.

This is a vibrant Cafe and deli in the heart of the city. Close to the shopping in Manners and Cuba Streets. Great coffee and an excellent range of top-notch food options too. Sit in the sun by the window or you can grab a more intimate table at the back. Love it and highly recommended.

Second time eating here at Dixon St deli, yesterday our food was absolutely amazing, the service was wonderful from all employees and the pricing of food for the quality is great! They misplaced our food docket during a massive rush today so the owner treated us to 2 slices of caramel slices on the house while they make our order. Truly great food and amazing service, We will be back tomorrow before we leave Wellington!

Always enjoy cooking here but this visit was special. Got in right as the kitchen was closing but they were happy to make a chicken burger for me and it was the best chicken burger I have ever had, the sauce was something else, spicy but left my taste buds in tact. Easily go back again and again.

DIXON STREET DELICATESSEN. In my opinion this would have to be a top rated eatery, l love that you are served pronto, very friendly service, the food is served with top presentation, cooked to perfection, you don't hear the coffee machines making a racket in the back ground, which in alot of places you do. Prices are on par with other places to eat out, prepare to pay, that is all l can say, nothing is cheap these days. I have been to this place before, love it when l go to Wellington, definitely will be back again. Top marks, can not fault it in my opinion, please go and check this eatery out for yourself. Thankyou Louise.

Outstanding meal, praboly the best breakfast that I had in Wellington CBD, nice coffee, and great service, thank for the staff. Highly recommended.

I'm old enough to remember when the Dixon Street deli really was a deli and a grocery store too. If you couldn't get what you wanted from here you'd have to go without. Now those imported foods are everywhere and the deli of old is now solidly a cafe. But its still a great location and for me a trip down memory lane with the photos on the wall of the old days

Love their Avocado on Halloumi, with the best gluten-free toast in Wellington

Pricey but worth seeking out for breakfast as the food is very nice. I was feeling adventurous so tried the pear, blueberry, and ginger smoothie (non-dairy) and it was good. Nice to see them using paper straws.
Carolyn Hohne
Nice selection of hot and cold options. Their grilled veggies were delicious.

very slow and dull atmosphere, music is quiet and old, feels like a funeral. the service is okay but way to slow, not a very good cafe to be honest

I love my hot chocolates - and this place had one of the best, creamiest and foamist I've ever tasted. The butter chicken filo was also really good (and filling) and came with a side of veges that I didn't expect. Overall an excellent cafe.

The pancakes were piping hot and presented immaculately - like a photo in a cookery book. Very tasty, if a tad pricey. The Super Smoothie was super bland though, with little in the way of discernible fruit flavour, and at $8.20 this drink was a waste of money.

We had ordered big breakfasts and when they finally came out, they were cold. We then asked if we could get them reheated and the staff were a bit rude about it. The big breakfasts came out again and the plates were just really hot and the food was still luke warm...They were obviously pretty understaffed on this day, and the food was pretty average.

Coffee tastes good here and I ordered chicken&bacon salad, it tastes delicious. Maybe next time I will try some desserts, they all look fresh and yum.

Sorry to give a bad review, the fit out was nice but there was seriously nothing else going for this place. <br/><br/>Coffee order was somehow lost, and when it eventually came out, 20 minutes or so after ordering it there was no apology or explanation. Tasted awful. <br/><br/>Service was equally slow and awful. Food was overpriced but edible. Would not recommend this place to anyone.

Went in this morning for brunch as we had never been before. Sadly, we probably won't be back. There was a long wait for our food anyway, but when my wife's finally came out, mine was nowhere to be seen. We were told it was "just seconds away". <br/><br/>After five minutes we noticed the waitress take the same thing we ordered across to another table that had come in after us. I went up to the counter to ask how it was possible she got her rosti while I was still waiting and got the confused response that the waitress must have taken the order to the wrong table.<br/><br/>So then we had to wait for her meal to be prepared and then delivered to our table instead. The waitress did offer us a free drink, and because of that I haven't deducted any stars from my rating, but the whole thing just seemed so unprofessional, with some staff appearing lost while others appeared to just wash their hands of responsibility.<br/><br/>On top of that, the food was pretty average for what you are paying for, especially given the wait. The chef was able to make good poached eggs, however, so there's a bonus tick for that. <br/><br/>All in all, we will probably just go to one of the many other establishments in the area next time. Pity.

Nice polite staff. I had a salad which was a combination of three salads put into a plastic container and then emptied onto the plate. Was a fairly generous portion for the $12 price tag, just not particularly well prepared having it in the plastic container and tipped onto a plate. <br/>The Greek salad was nice but a little overwhelming with tart flavours.<br/>Nice atmosphere.

The first of three locations we went for brunch this Father's day. I really wanted to test the differences in taste for such a simple meal. The Dixon street deli was pretty busy like everywhere today. Their wait staff were very polite at asking if we'd like anything from the cabinet while we waited. We got to the table after ordering eggs Benedict and noticed how in comparison to the Hangar that this place was really relaxed and their were far more families and kids too. The eggs Benedict was poached well although the bacon was a bit undercooked. It was served on a brown muffin which was really scrumptious. But because it was without spinach or hash browns I couldn't quite justify the $17.5 price tag. But still a really lovely little cafe.

Coffee was not drinkable, my flat white had a green spinach looking vege in it & my mums long black was muddy & bitter. No offer of a refund when I informed the wait staff.

Visited here sporadically over the years. Today for take away lunch. Lots on offer. Some lovely looking dishes.<br/><br/>I chose the sweet chili chicken salad. I wasn’t sold but was told it was one of their best sellers. Looked nice so gave it a go.<br/><br/>Service ok.<br/><br/>The options for takeaway are $9.00 and $13.00. They are not big! - One of my colleagues even commented 'that looks like a starter to your lunch'. <br/><br/>So yeah, not a huge portion for $13.00. <br/><br/>The salad was nice. Chicken was a tad hard and there was too much dressing. Had nice chunky of veg and tasted good.<br/><br/>In short the experience at Dixon has always been the same. Nice food, not blown away, a bit overpriced.

I would normally email the place directly with this kind of review as I believe in descrete constructive criticism, but no email is listed on the website or Facebook, so I have no other way of sharing my disappointment. <br/><br/>While visiting Wellington for the weekend, my friends and I were trying to make the most of the many bars and restaurants around. This made us very fussy about where to go for breakfast Sunday morning, as we didn't want to regret our decision. Unfortunately, we left wishing we had spent our money elsewhere. <br/><br/>The place looks clean and bright, which I love. Everything in the cabinet looked great, but pretty much nothing was labelled, which makes picking out a veggie meal tricky. It was about 11:20am and they opened at 9. There was a plate labelled 'Chicken Cannelloni' and an unlabelled plate next to it. I wondered whether it was veggie cannelloni but after seeing the way the server was talking to customers ahead of me, I decided to pick something from the menu. I was greeted by an exasperated "Yes?" . I asked if I could have the Peirogi and was answered with "Probably not. We don't always make it." After going to the kitchen to check, she came back without saying a word to me and wrote a list of run-outs on paper (for staff, not for customer's sake), including the Peirogi, then came back without saying anything. I thought I must have scored the last portion so ordered my sister's breakfast and asked what salad my meal came with. "What!? The eggs Benedict...?" She spat back. I said "No, the Peirogi." She glared at me and said I wasn't getting the Peirogi. I explained that I didn't actually know that because she never actually said there was none for me. It's hard to explain this girl's rudeness without writing an essay but basically, after paying for my food, I went to my table absolutely fuming about the way I was talked to. <br/>The place didn't seem very busy to me but after about 40minutes, our meals all came out separately even though we ordered at the same time on the same number. Each one of us had turns at eating alone which is far from ideal. <br/>I also noticed that nothing was written on the blackboard to say what they were out of. <br/><br/>If I was served by someone good at talking to customers, and we were warned that it was busy and meals might take a little longer than usual, maybe we would have loved this place.

My go to place to hide from rainy and windy weather when I am in Wellington. I ordered the BLT bagel, lots of lettuce and tomato, could have done with a little more bacon and some mayonnaise or seasoning. Nice place and the food seems to be consistently good since I only go there every year or so.

A vintage player within the Capital's cafe scene, Dixon Deli serves great coffee and provides a wide range of deli/ cabinet food.<br/><br/>I had a orange and mint cake, which was moist and flavoursome, my coffee was of Wellington standard without being too special.<br/><br/>Showstopper: The ambience of the cafe was delightful and relaxing.<br/><br/>Overall Grade: B+, looking forward to coming back to try out their other dishes

Good food here, nothing exciting or overly amazing. Large portions at cafe pricing. Gluten free bread is store bought not home made... Staff are lovely though and I'd definitely come back for a free range organic meal.

Had a lunch of salad from their cabinet today. <br/>Such an awesome selection and lots of colourful veges on display. <br/>I got a large serving with chicken and bacon salad and Asian vegetables and beans. The salads were clearly labelled with their dietary requirements which is great. <br/>For $13 it was a relatively reasonable portion size. <br/>The salads were good, the chicken was a little overdone but I'm sure I'll be back
Sophie
Oh my gosh the French toast was amazing! Average atmosphere and service, had to wait for ages to get our plates cleared, but the food makes up for it. Huge servings to suit even the largest appetites, the big breakfast is not big its literally huge!

I came here for brunch with a friend yesterday and was initially hesitant because of the bad/average reviews of the cabinet food. I stayed away from it and ordered something off the menu, which I was really impressed with. I got the pancakes which came with bananas, maple syrup, cream and fresh fruit. They also came with bacon but I chose not to have it. For $17.50 I think this was pretty reasonable, especially as I was quite hungry and couldn't even finish the dish. The pancakes were fluffy and really tasty and I was very satisfied after my meal. <br/><br/>My friend ordered eggs on a bagel which she said were nice but would have been better without the hair she found!<br/><br/>Overall the experience was good, our food arrived fast and it was filling and reasonably priced if not, only sliiiightly expensive. Would come back definitely

I have been coming here since I was a lad with hair and shorts. The hair has gone and it has to be really summery to get me out in shorts. DSD is a Wellington institution. The place has been tarted us has the food (to a degree). <br/><br/>Great cabinet food and a lovely blackboard menu. Service was efficient albeit disinterested. <br/><br/>A reliable spot for lunch.

Popped in to grab a bite with my partner and our one year old son, I grabbed a latte and a pulled pork pie which sounded really good. <br/><br/>Coffee came over pretty fast, it tasted OK but it didn't look like there was much effort made. The pie however was very goo<br/>d and we left reasonably happy. Cheers

Nice place and fresh food. The vegetarian caneloni was delicious and a big portion. The flavor was really good spinach and ricotta cheese with tomato sauce. <br/>The staff was friendly.

Dixon St Deli is somewhat of a Welly institution and I have been more times than I can count. Unfortunately though, it is losing its appeal (to me anyway). Today's outing is becoming a bit too common for my experiences there; the food in the cabinet is the same as usual, the coffee was not bad but not fantastic, service for coffee and a scone was slow (10 min plus waitand I actually had to ask if the scone was coming), the butter chicken filo I had needed a bit of a kick in flavour and the atmosphere was mediocre. I used to love this place but with so many other cafes popping up that look to have a point of difference, it may be awhile before I head back there.

Been here a couple of times now, atmosphere is pleasant enough. Service was prompt and friendly. <br/>I had a hot chocolate, which was tasty, although more expensive than many others of the same standard. The chicken, bacon, mushroom and leek filo was really tasty, although presentation was a bit lacking. My husband had the berry smoothie and says it's quite good. <br/>All in all, a nice experience but not one I would repeat frequently.

There are far better places to eat. Heralding back to days of Dixon Street Deli's former glory, we're afraid it has lost its shine. Our experience was thoroughly disappointing. When asked when the two soups were made, the kitchen gave instructions to whip one off the menu, sending us the reply that the Creamy Cauliflower soup had been made the previous week. (We dined on Monday.) The bean salad was inedible, the taste of canned beans pervading the whole dish. There are so many great places to eat in Wellington, so many more places with warmer, friendlier service, that our advice is to choose somewhere else.

As I'd walked past Dixon St Deli on my first afternoon in Wellington, I doubled back once I realised the name sounded familiar. Pressing my nose up against the glass windows, I could just make out the menu of the closed cafe. Oh yes, I knew where I was heading for breakast the next day. At 5.30pm, I'm eating two chicken and potato enchiladas with Poblano Mole from Viva Mexico. By 7.00pm Im about to start a three-course dinner at The Ambeli . I'm not really in need of a huge breakfast the next morning, but the bacon... it's the main reason I got out of bed so early. Long black $3.30 At 8.45am on a Saturday, Dixon St Deli is still filling its glass display cabinets with pies, pastas, salads and

Great place. Go there at least once on each trip to Wellington. Fantastic coffee & huge selection of great food. Staff are always friendly & helpful. Would recommend to any one. ????

Shopping along Cuba Mall with my mum & brother and stopped in for lunch. The cafe had a good crowd in it and we were served quickly - first impressions were very good as their huge cabinet was stocked with delicious looking morsels! I settled on a chicken, apricot, mushroom and almond filo and a mochaccino; mum chose the thai chicken filo and a caramel latte; and little brother went caramel slice and banana-berry smoothie. Everything was delicious - I didn't have time to snap a pic of my brothers selections! There was a mix up with my hot drink (cappucino instead of mochacino) but they were really gracious and got this sorted out pronto. Definitely would return.

Went with a mid sized group for lunch. We all ordered together but our meals came out at different times. The food was relatively expensive especially compared to the very average quality. Can't comment on the coffee. The staff seemed friendly enough.

I have been here twice, always had fast friendly service and the free WiFi is great. The corn fritters were lovely. However, I cannot recommend their filos - got a chicken and spinach one which turned out to be full of mushroom, far more so than the promised filling. Not for me.

I have been here for brunch several times and always found the food fantastic. The pancakes are to die for and I will happily return here for brunch again. My partner ordered the scrambled eggs and they looked rather sad next to my extravagant plate of food but I think in general the food is of a very high standard.

We came for coffee, saw the cabinet food and came back for lunch. Very friendly staff and great fast service, I had the vegetable tortellini, Very Yummy, but was a bit too stodgy. It had an onion/silver beet filling that was very creamy &amp; cheesy, and even though tasty, needed more vegetable or more tomato sauce to freshen it up. Friend had one of the meat pies which was fantastic and overladen with filling. We shared an almond croissant- beautiful!. Coffee was nice and hot. Will be back!

Great quality and yummy tasting food. The cabinet food always looks divine and the staff are awesome come here for breakfast menu the scrambled eggs with ham and side of potatoes fantastic every time worth getting into work late for. Will be back for more wifi a. bonus also.

Best cafe food in Wellington, can't pass those white wine chicken n rice Filos!

Superb counter selection and excellent coffee. The menu is extensive and reasonably priced for such a high quality.

Very high standard for the developed palate! Recommend their fudge as the best in NZ!

Living on past glories in my view. This is well regarded by many, but I have never understood why.<br/><br/>Food selection is not great in my view and the deli label is somewhat of a misnomer.<br/><br/>Tables too close together.sometimes I have thought the staff are more interested in themselves and their friends than the customers. An affliction which seems to affect several places in Wellington in my view, and elsewhere.
