Review Chilis Bistro And Tandoor - Wellington

With the weather being so so cold, wet and windy everytime someone opened the door to pick up a takeaway we froze at our table. But the people are wonderful and so was the food. Thanks Chilli's ❤️

Following the recent closure of our usual local restaurant we started going to Chilis Bistro and Tandoor in Newlands a few months ago. We have been impressed with this restaurant. Their fairly extensive menu, the quality of their meals, their friendly and helpful service and the spacious and comfortable seating, make it in my opinion, an excellent restaurant. I also believe that they are fairly priced. We went there again last night (19/6/22) and this time as a group of 9 and all of us enjoyed the evening very much with a promise to be back. Rahul looked after us last evening and did so extremely well.

I had never noticed this place before, but one cold evening when out shopping, I smelled something amazing and turned my head to find this place. So a few weeks later came in to try it with my wife. The food was good. I have pretty high expectations when it comes to Indian food and I cook it quite a bit. For a small family owned restaurant, this place is producing some really nice flavours. Massive range of entrees and very generous helpings on them too. We found the service to be outstanding and were very well looked after. If you'd like to try something off the beaten track I would recommend this place. We both enjoyed our meals . There was a lovely home cooked vibe about the food, and lots of regulars (clearly) rolling in over the time we were there - which is a good sign. If you like to support local business like I do, then I think you'll enjoy it here. They are incredibly hard working and deserving of your custom. Thumbs up guys and girls.

Underrated Indian Restaurant. Great food, great vegetarian/vegan selection. Best Onion Bhaji I’ve ever had.

Awesome food and even better customer service. They were real busy, got my order wrong, and redelivered for free within 15 minutes. Will be back again and again!!

Lovely food and garlic naan. Friendly service. Often busy. Tell them how spicy you want your food. Including Indian hot!

Went there for dinner with my wife. Staff was really welcoming and friendly. ambiance is very cool. This was the first time we went to this place and it was totally worth of it. Me and my wife enjoyed the dishes we ordered. The taste was really good which is very difficult to get in wellington (very few restaurants serve good quality Indian dishes and this is one of them for sure.). Its value to money and you won’t be disappointed with the service and taste.

Enjoyed a lovely meal at this restaurant last week. Very impressed with the extensive menu, great selection of meat, seafood and vegetarian dishes. Offers BYO wine plus plenty of choices for alcohol for sale including wine, beer and cocktails, as well as non-alcoholic drinks. Excellent service and tasty food - highly recommended!

Lovely Indian restaurant. Take a moment and ask the waitress what she would recommend for you.

It's pretty common to stumble upon a restaurant that can cook a good meal, but it's difficult to find a restaurant that can consistently cook a good meal. Chili's knocks it out of the park every time I've been! Their butter chicken is divine, seasoned perfectly with just the right amount of heat and their breads are always grand and the Malai chicken Tikka is a quiet wee gem hiding in the entree menu. Contrary to what others have said I think their takeaway pricing is pretty fair considering the amount and quality of the food. Their takeaway specials are pretty decent price wise. If your local has been letting you down or you're looking for something different give Chili's a go, I'm sure you won't be disappointed

The biryani, bread and curries are very good. Tandoori chicken is a must try. The only thing I am worried is about the price. Really high compared with others in the same market.

The tandoor items are good here however the curries don’t have the same taste as we tend to order the same and we have got different taste at different times.

We just ordered the South Indian Cuisine( Sambhar- dosa) in $26.80. The taste of Sambhar was not good, just only water curry with too much oil and 4,5 pieces of vegetables inside. It was my first and last experience from this restaurant.

Ordered chicken tandoori and chicken 79 vis Uber on a Saturday evening. The chicken tandoori was soggy and under cooked. I had put it back in the oven with additional spice and butter before we could eat it. Chicken 79 was ok.

Chilis aren’t the best but they do some decent dishes.
The parking is convenient and the service is average.

It’s a nice little place for a little family dinner.

These guys are the best. Most delicious, authentic Indian I've had! Their prices are reasonable, the food is consistently amazing, the customer service is TOP NOTCH and they are able to provide equally delicious vegetarian and vegan meals. Highly recommend.

They served decent tikka masala and they do delivery. not a fan of the mango curry though..its bit too watery for me. but all in all we love the curry here compare other curry place in wellington.

I went in a big group and can only judge based on a big party. They just about coped with us but the food arrival was a bit sporadic.
My food wasn't my favourite ever Indian food but I didn't dislike it either. I would give them another chance.

A suburban gem!

This family run place is great for a dine in meal or for takeaways.

The decor may not be the slickest but what matters is the food - very tasty and the service is excellent.

No surprises on the menu but all reliable dishes.

Excellent service (both dine in and delivery), very friendly waitress
and the food is the BEST I have to say. I have been there many times and will
continue to go there. I have also introduced my friends and family to Chili’s
and they all love the food there. My all-time favourite is their Lamb Briyani (medium
spicy)

A+ for service

A+ for food

Highly recommended.

Fast service and delicious food every time, whether take away, delivery or dine in. We are never disappointed! Would highly recommend for the johnsonville Newlands area.

me and my partner decided to get 2 chicken jalfrezi delivered, its great how they only charge $3.50 for delivery. you get 2 currys a naan and a big bottle of coke for less than $40 which is a good deal. an anticipating 40 min wait turned into an hour, i didn't care however my partner was boiling over with fury and dieing from starvation at this point. thankfully when our jalfrezis arrived, it was all okay because the nice delivery man humbley apologized and explanied that he was struck in traffic :)

so now, the curry, i asked for hot and it was delicious. it wasn't oily like most jalfrizis
and enough chicken for two in one curry.

i dont know why people complain about the spice ( "oooo it has to much spice for me ooooo") indian food is saposed to be spicey and packed with bold flavors, if you cannot handle spice dont eat indan food. and whats the point in going to an indian restaurant just to order butter chicken? butter chicken inst even Indian food. anyways i like chilis, good food and customer service.

i will return.

The curries here are delicious. We usually get delivery as it's only $3.50. We usually get the $39.90 deal. Onion bhaji, 2 curries with rice plus naan and a 1.5l of soft drink. Lasts us 2 meals easily.
Definitely worth trying!

I am not normally that fond of Indian food but we have had takeaways from here twice and they have been delicious. We have had the fish masala, tandoori chicken and the beef rogan josh and all have been excellent and very fresh tasting. Yummy naan bread too. Friendly staff. Highly recommended.

I personally love curries and find them the most divine cuisine from all aspects of international cuisine. This love has been greatly increased to its highest peek because of chilis.

On Saturday night, last week me and a couple of other friends thought about going to an Indian restaurant. We all reluctantly chose chilis because of its exceptional reviews in the past. When we arrived we were gestured by a waiter, who I thought was exceptional at his work and I found the service quite generous and well mannered. We then ordered some food. I ordered chicken tikka chilis (chef's special) and seekh kebab and found both the starters presented in a unique and mouth-watering way. I was amazed and lustful for more. We then had our mains, I ordered the Chicken Kadai and Lamb Dhansak and a Keema Naan. What can I say about this?... Excellent, divine and lustful.

I strongly urge you all to try chilis and be amazed!

This is a wonderful Indian restaurant, we are locals and are so happy to be able to dine here on a regular basis. The service is great and very friendly. The food is consistently excellent and the naan bread is the best in the city! What a joy to have such a place right in our neighbourhood!
Phil
Great place! very friendly family owned restaurant. I have only ordered the tikka masala and as they have to be the best ones I have had (been to a lot of different indian restaurants) I have not yet diversified to try the other mains as the tikka is just so good. Highly recommended.

We love this restaurant. The food is very good Indian food of beautiful quality. Its always delicious. The service is always excellent and they are very friendly indeed. Its one of, if not the best Indian restaurant in Wellington.
FOOD Wars
I dined here based on the reviews. I wasn't disappointed but I wouldn't say they have the 'best' curries around, in fact, there is a takeaway curry place just around the corner that is delicious - but unfortunately no dine in. They were yummy no doubt and the atmosphere is great. Would consider dining her again. Food prices are reasonable.

This restaurant is one of the hidden gems in Wellington, as their food is absolutely divine. We've been there many times now (going through the menu) and there has been no courses (entree, main or dessert) that are not great, and some are exceptional; for example try their Tandoori Mushrooms or Onion Baluchi for entree.

We actually had an overseas European family visiting us where some (family members) were allergic to fish, some had never had Indian food they liked, some were new to spicy foods and some had already tasted the best Indian foods there ever was. Everybody in this family said this was the best food they ever had; the seafood allergics (we called and informed prior the booking about the allergy requirements) enjoyed sharing mains with us as everything had been prepared separately as promised by the staff. And the person who disliked Indian food has not been able to get over it ever since as she cannot find anything equivalent in her own country.

So there is no reason for explaining the courses one by one - the fact is that no matter what you'll have will be the best Wellington Indian food can offer. And as far as the friendliness of their staff goes; the last time we dined there our Chef came over with some Raita without asking as I had stated that one of the meals was "great, but slightly hot to my taste".

Bottom-line: If you only visit one Indian this year, this is the place to go. Even if you are not from the Northern suburbs, go and visit - you won't regret it.

This has been the best Indian restaurant I have been to, and I have been to a lot. It also is also has very! very! nice staff which have the best service I have ever had, with also mouth watering food and a pleasant way to spend some time. I would recommend this restaurant to everyone.

My wife and I recently ate here and it was disappointing. The decor really needs attention, paintwork is sloppy and unfinished, wall friezes peeling off.
Service was great, and our server was attentive, knowledgeable and communicated well.
I ordered a mushroom entrée (don't remember the name) which was way over-spiced for me, I couldn't taste mushroom at all. My main was a medium beef Korma, unfortunately once again flavor overwhelmed by spices.
My wife however got mild butter chicken which really was superb, lots of flavour but not too rich as many are, a really well balanced dish.
Perhaps a mild Korma might have been better but I usually get medium elsewhere.
