Review Thai Tara - Wellington

Kyriakos George
Never been into this place but have ordered a lot from this place on Uber eats, I have never been disappointed with them, they have a great selection of vegetarian food which is great, they make a great green curry.

The service here is friendly and welcoming. The food is amazing. I ordered cashew stir-fry with coconut rice. Good portion size and nice and hot. I highly recommend eating here. If you haven't booked, like me, l recommend coming early as it is very popular especially for takeaways.

I walked into what felt like the cutest place you would find by accident, accept I intended to come here. I had the Thai Red Curry with coconut rice. It was delicious. Don’t think twice about this place before going, because it is everything a Thai restaurant should be! From the relaxing Thai music, to the wholesome staff, the whole Atmosphere is exceptional. I didn’t expect to experience so much Thai love, when I was just looking for something to fill me up. I literally never write reviews, so believe me when I say, this place is wonderful.

Absolutely delicious Thai food! Lovely and friendly staff will help to decide which you should order. Honestly you won’t regret any food. Just careful “Thai spicy” 😂I recommend Mango sticky rice for dessert!

Dinner @ Yor Yak Thai Eatery. . Didn't realise I'd arrived on their local labour day weekend, so many places were closed for business that day. . A good online search revealed this place, the most highly rated amongst those shops that were open. . The version of Khao Kluk Kapi here is a Thai Kiwi rendition, featuring a base of fried rice infused with chili shrimp paste, savoury salty spicy shrimpy in flavour with grainy fluffy firm texture, and a lingering heat that kicks sharply and builds as you eat. . The khao kulk kapi is accompanied by several sides, including crisp juicy cucumber slices with vegetal sweet flavour, crunchy steamed cauliflower and broccoli florets with vegetal sweet flavour. . Also soft salted egg with salty eggy flavour, tender soy caramelised pork loin and white onion strips with meaty salty savoury sweet flavour, and crisp deep-fried snapper fish fillets with sweet savoury salty flavour. . Garnished with fresh spring onions which are crisp and lend vegetal sweet herbal flavour. . The Yellow Curry Soft Shell Crab is a Thai Kiwi rendition. A whole soft shell crab is stir-fried with white onions and carrots in yellow curry spices, resulting in a crisp tender soft texture to the crab and vegetables. . The yellow curry soft shell crab dish carries addictive sweet savoury salty spice flavours, yum.

Beautiful Thai cuisine, presented nicely on the plate. The restaurant is perfectly situated and is a perfect place for a nice dinner with family and friends. The staff members are very friendly and helpful. I really recommend this place. Cheers

We went with friends to celebrate a birthday. The food was great and the small restaurant packed. Thai food is not at the top of my list, but the food was excellent. I will definitely be going back.

Richness in flavour. We enjoyed our Thai dishes. Great service. Easy accessible parking during evening meals. Green curry and sizzling beef was awesome.

The food has that charred wok flavour that you're absolutely craving. Cosy atmosphere and really friendly warm staff. Accommodating for Vegan/Vegetarians, and pretty decent portioning. Tom yum fried rice is delish :)

Highly recommended. Really friendly and attentive staff. Awesome food. I had the choo chee salmon and the flavour was great. A little bit overcooked but still tasty all the same, and they were really open to feedback. I'll be back to try it again for sure. Thanks very much, and see you next time!

Excellent food and afordable prices! I had a Thai stir fry crispy pork medium spicy. The sauce was balanced, the vegetables still fresh and the crispy pork had just the right crackling texture. Everyone at the table was very happy with what they had. The portions were big and most came either with rice or with roti. The stuff was efficient and the owner was friendly. We will definitely go there again! Bonus: open on Sunday and Monday!

Highly recommended. Great service. Medium hot Thai chilli chicken with jasmine rice was just right, not too hot, not too mild. Top marks Yor Yak. I'll be back!! 🙂

Had to try this place out after they charged ownership from ThaiTara to YorYak. Have to admit my expectations weren’t high but now that I’ve tried their food I have to say it exceeded what I expected. Went with my friend, we ordered Thai fish cake, Thai style fried chicken (marinated in fish sauce I believe so),steamed prawn wonton, fillet fish pla yum tah krai and beef massamun curry. The fish cakes were amazing different from usual Thai place that serves small skinny ones. The fried chicken was also good the taste wasn’t overwhelming and it was fried with just the right way. The prawns wontons were good I love their little touch on it and added a bit of mala making it seem like a Thai fusion which was amazing, though I believe the prawns were slightly over-cooked it was slightly hard. Now the beef massamun curry I have to give it to them it was the best I’ve had among Thai place in Wellington. It wasn’t bland it wasn’t watery it was just right it does get a bit salty after you eat it for a while but that’s normal. I personally cannot stand onions especially red onions I despite them. But despite it having red onions in it, it did not overpowering the dish at all. It was all perfectly balanced. I highly recommend this place and all of their food! I will be back, thank you for your service Yor Yak. :)

This is a little gem. Lovely cosy restaurant. Clean with friendly, smiling service and superb food. Tasty and authentic. We highly recommend. Don’t miss it.

The panang curry was amazing, roti portion was huge for how cheap it was as an entree. Meal was actually spicy! Cant imagine what thai hot would taste like. Seriously recommend.

hot, fresh, flavour, yummmmmmm. Chicken satays, yum, smoky flavour and seasoned to perfection, spring rolls, look homemade and taste wonderful. Pad Thai, the best, sweet, sour and salty. Crazy delicious. PRICES ARE VERY REASONABLE FOR QUALITY MEAT PACKED GOODNESS

GO HERE ASAP

The $10 lunch special is fantastic. We had a green and red curry - both were delicious. Big portions and friendly service. Would definitely recommend!

I love the food at Thai Tara and it’s close to my home so I tend to get takeaway frequently when I don’t feel like cooking. Their massaman curry is great as well as their satay vegetable stirfry. They are always so lovely. They forgot my order tonight but these things happen (I used to work in hospo so I understand) I will still be back again 😊

Went here today for lunch. I got a grab one voucher but unfortunately didn’t read the terms and conditions of booking 24 hours in advance but they were nice enough to get me use my voucher during the day. The food was nice, fried rice was under seasoned but the oysters chicken was near perfect, presentation was average and the Thai milk tea was great. Overall was a great experience and worth the time and money, would go again if I go Wellington

One of the best penang curries I've ever had! Absolutely delicious. Restaurant is BYO and corkage is only $5. Restaurant is quite small and it's more suited to a couple or small group for dining. Will definitely be back :)

Nice food. Ordered Pad Thai, Green Curry and Roti to share. Food is nice but lacked that real Thai fresh herb and spice zing and flavour!!

Went here because there was a grab one voucher. We ordered the vegetarian spring rolls and satay skewers. Both were so delicious! I don't even like satay dishes but the skewers were amazing and I would totally order them again! The red curry was yum and the pad thai was amazing. Such value for money! Looking forward to coming back here!

I love Thai Tara :) we often get take aways here and it's the best pad Thai I've had in Wellington city. The service is good and the food is delicious. My partner always gets the red duck curry which is also really yum.

Very enjoyable, friendly service, great taste of the food as well. Definitely will come back for more. But they do "Thai medium" hot and not really "kiwi medium" hot, so be careful! :p But they are still delicious! It's more down-to-earch dishes rather than classy cuisines, which is what I would enjoy the most.

Food is great and the service is always friendly and cheerful!

I like the phad thai. They also ahve the best roti in town. COmes out crispy and served hot fresh form the kitchen.

I would highly recommend ;)

Visiting Wellington for a couple of days and thought we would try Thai Tara restaurant on our last night.
Small restaurant but seemed reasonably busy on Sunday night for both dine in and takeaway.
Service: not good ... The waitress didn't clear any tables while we were there unless she absolutely had to ... Our entrees took over 40 mins to arrive (and were delivered to the wrong table??) .. It seemed like takeaway took priority over eat-in orders .. Not sure what the chefs were doing the rest of the time.
Food: entrees (curry puffs & Thai chicken skewers) - average - $6.50 each ... The entrees were small and simple .. Nothing amazing although the Thai skewers had a nice sauce.
Mains: Thai curry and Stir fry - average - I ordered "Thai hot" and the temperature was good ... The food was average however ... Nothing to write home about.
Dessert: deep fried ice cream - yuck - the price was sharp at $5.50 and the portion generous ... However the deep fried ice cream was luke-warm at best ... The "hot" bread coating which melts the ice cream inside wasnt authentic ... It took only a couple of minutes for the dessert to be served and it showed why ... These were "pre-made" in the freezer and obviously warmed slightly on the outside ... Worst deep fried ice cream I've tried to be honest! I barely finished mine ..

All in all the prices here were reasonable, but it seems like shortcuts were taken with the food which is strange considering the slow service ... I wouldn't come back.

Thai Tara is the best Thailand restaurant that I can recommend to people who looking for quality food with reasonable price and Pla-rod-Plik (deep fried fish with spicy and sweet sauce) is my favourite menu that I alway come and eat. Additional comment for Thai students or tourists in Wellington that are looking for Thai special menu that you eat in Thailand you can request that menu in this restaurant

The food is authentic at an affordable price. The salmon dish I ordered was superb. The service was good and the cooks were very friendly. What a bargain!

forgot to took photos this time. I had grilled chicken for entree, which is alright. Pad Thai (lunch menu) and laab duck( from dinner menu). Both are so terrible! Pad thai was toooo sweet! And the laab duck come with rice at the first time. After I told the staff it's a dish, it come again with just salad instead of that rice.... And we have waited for our food for half hour! The duck was tasteless, not the flavour I usually had at other Thai restaurant. I definitely won't come back again.

First of all, I am from Southeast Asia, hence i can tell which is good food and which is trying hard to be good. In my opinion, Thai Tara offers a real insight to Thai food. If one is to immerse into the succulent Thai flavors, do not miss out Thai Tara. Do not be deceived by the small outfit. They have really friendly staff and good cooks. I take away my food every day from this place. Will i return to the place for more food and dining, definitely yes.

Service - The service here on both occasions has been unbeatable, very friendly, good kind people who make you feel genuinely welcome.
Food - Very authentic, tasty and enjoyed having a good portion of high quality fresh food on every visit.
Price - This is real value for money, as you get great service in a very pleasant environment with fresh high quality food with high quality ingredients that combine with the great chef skills to make a very enjoyable occasion. We have been twice and will go back many more times. I recommend this restaurant without any reservation, just ensure if you do not like spicy food let the kitchen know and of course the opposite applies.

Had dinner on a Sunday night. We were the only one in the restaurant. This was great as we got the full service and attention. The waitress was very helpful in our selection of the menu and her recommendations were top-notch. The appetisers came out within 15 minutes of ordering. The roti was lovely especially with dipping sauce. The money bags with the sweet taro was a very yummy surprise. It tasted more like a dessert than an appetiser. The mains were equally delicious. Would recommend the salad with the papaya (sorry, can't remember the name), very tasty and refreshing. The only downside was we ordered two sticky rice but they could only serve one because they ran out. We expect all restaurants to be fully stock in all ingredients or at least let the customer know before hand. Despite the shortage of sticky rice, we would go back.

Really authentic Thai flavours- family friendly and quaint setting- service was a little slow but overall definitely worth the wait- I look forward to trying it again soon

We were looking for a new place to try for lunch and saw they do $10 lunches so decided to give it a go. The lady behind the counter was very friendly and the food was delivered quickly. The portion size was great for lunch and was very authentic and flavoursome. The only critique I have is the basil stir fry could have had a bit more basil in it!

Will be back to try out some more items for sure!

Service was very poor, staff had jackets on and were ready to go home as soon as we walked in. It was pretty obvious they just wanted us to leave as we were the only customers (group of 10). Food was ok but we all felt rushed and did not have a great experience. Won't be back.

Picked up a Green curry and fried rice. Great flavours, right amount of heat, nice portions of meat to Vege's and all round great value for money. The timing was great too, exactly what they said, be ready in 15 mins. Great, I will be back for sure.

Been here a few times now and this place has never disappointed. Great service and great food. Very friendly staff and the food came out quickly. The price is excellent too. Best duck curry I've ever had by far! Aww man, I want to go have some right now!

Wow. The menu here is full of delicious options, the portions are very generous and the prices very reasonable. Highly recommend the delicious and fun Chef's specials including the Oh My Gosh - a large mixed seafood dish served wrapped in cabbage leaves that comes out in an impressive looking steamed ball wrapped in tinfoil - defininitely deserved its name in presentation and taste, and the Best Friend Forever, a whole fish soaked in a delicious not-too-sweet thai sweet and sour sauce. We also tried the Drunken Noodles as I am a big fan of Thai holy basil. Big, fresh portion with plenty of very tender and lean chicken. This has to be the most delicious casual dining in Wellington, its above and beyond your usual BYO establishment. Highly recommend.

Yum. We have been here many times, with groups of 2 - 6. Bigger groups you will need to book.
This last time we enjoyed a Delicious Tom kha gai soup for starters and stuffed chicken wings. The tom kha gai soup was the standout dish of the meal and next time I will get that as a main. We also had roti with peanut sauce (nice roti) a chicken noodle and vege and one more - bit I think we over ordered - we were way too full to finish the food.

Always happy to return, with the entertainment card it makes a good price as well (their wine you can purchase is well priced or you can BYO)
Hilda Low
Not too impressed. Service was rather slow, and the starter (Tom Yum soup with coconut milk) was from the same soup base as the green curry main that we ordered. The "fish slices" turned out to be more like shredded fish pieces instead. Can definitely get better value elsewhere for the same price. Unlikely to return.

Nice and courteous staff and great food, parking is a bit of an issue, but that's not the restaurants fault

I'd definitely come back

This is the best Thai restaurant I have ever been to. I find the staff to ALWAYS be lovely and friendly. The service FAST. The meals delicious. I always get Chicken Pad Thai (never disappoints!) but my partner always orders differently and has liked everything he has tried. Its BYO also :)

Very courteous staff, but waited a little too long for the entrees considering the restaurant was half full. Tables pretty close togetehr so dont expect much privacy! My squid dish was superb. Other guests also praised the freshness of the food.
