Review Cafe Classic - Wellington

Sarah Staladi
First time ordering from here was today and on UberEats... honestly, THE BEST iced mocha I've ever had in my life, and the most amazing eggs benedict (and cheapest) in the whole of Wellington.

Nice service. Coffee there is average. I ordered a regular size of long black and it turned out to be made by L'affare beans. It tasted good (not burnt). Food looked nice and the atmosphere is good. Many people working nearby would come and grab quick bite. Some would stay for relaxing and chatting. Will come again given chances.

Definitely a classic visit! Enjoyed an "Classic Breakfast" with classic company! Great service, good coffee and tasty food. We all left feel and happy! Thanks CC!

REALLY nice place, two levels with lots of nooks and crannies to hide in and great light,. plus carpet so it's warm and quiet! Their counter food is literally to die for, as is their menu. Today was the first time I tried a counter burrito and it looked and tasted like a Michelin star chef prepared it, it was superb. Add the liquor licence and delightful and efficient staff and you'll struggle to find a nicer, quieter, classier or more down to earth lunch spot. It'll please anyone you know - including that one precious friend who will never admit they like it more than the place THEY recommended. Honestly, it's better than their place :)

Absolutely wonderful café. Chantal and her staff are a delight to deal with. Love the food and the coffee. The chicken salad is divine. I am a regular there. Chrissy E

A good, solid cafe with plenty of seating and decent food. Their coffee is good, the menu has the usual stuff and a few interesting other items, and the service is friendly.

Service was great and the coffee and muffin I got were amazing. Wish it wasn't so far away from where I am.

Lovely GF food. I tried the cheese scone and brunch cake and everything was fresh. I would suggest making GF signs more visible. Thanks!

Great food. Was busy at the time. Took a while for them to serve the order even though we've pre-ordered our food.

Good food, good coffee and good service. Hidden away so especially good if you prefer a quiet spot for lunch.

Good selection of food and coffee is well made. Can be very noisey when busy because of all of the hard surfaces

Always something new to try on the blackboard menu or cabinet and recently was Pad Thai. Perfect! Friendly, provide quick service and consistently a quality meal out

My daughter and her high school friends had a couple of coffees here and were accosted for having an apple on one of their laps and the other for eating a carrot. When they were asked to put the fruit away, they politely did it straight away, but the staff continued to publicly humiliate them, which is just unacceptable, calling them rude and suggesting they leave the café. Apparently other girls have had similar experiences.

I've been in here twice because I have an entertainment book voucher. Both times the staff were rude. The first time as I was leaving I smiled and said thank you as I walked out just to be ignored rudely by a guy who appeared to be the head chef or owner? Went in yesterday and a tall dark haired waitress gave me a dirty look and the old can I help you without even lifting her eyes to make eye contact. The food was poor as well.
Looks like a couple of other people had same experience.

I'm a regular to Cafe Classic and have been going there for at least 2 years now, often 3 times a week. The majority of my staff who work nearby also frequent Cafe Classic and we all enjoy the warm greeting by our names, the conversations and setting the world to right. The service is genuinely welcoming and the food is also consistently good, not pretentious and extremely good value for money. All of the baristas working at Cafe Classic without doubt ensure this place serves the best coffee in Thorndon.

I really should have written this review long ago but often it is easier to write a bad review over a good one. That's why I believe Zomato and other rating on other review websites should be taken with a pinch of salt and looked at with a broad view in mind. These guys however highly deserve all 5 stars. Well done team!

I visit cafe classic 4/5 mornings a week and get a coffee and lunch from the cabinet, and have for the past 2 years. The team, and several daily regulars, there are the first people I see most mornings and I look forward to seeing them everyday. Even when they are busy they always acknowledge and welcome me with a friendly greeting. They know me by first name and what I order, making my often rushed morning easier. I miss cafe classic on a Friday morning when I have a early meeting, and miss my coffee stop - my boss notices the difference too.

I have missed this place. I don't work in town any more.I had the chance and went there the other day for breakfast.I ordered the most delicious french toast with yummy bacon, banana and Maple syrup was around $16 so well priced and I got a flat white.I found the staff lovley it was busy with a great atmosphere. It is great to go to a cafe that has friendly staff and is lovely and clean and chic, I will definitely be going back soon.

A regular of Cafe Classic, I find the food delicious and the service superb. I've been coming here almost every morning for two years, and recommend it to all my friends.

Unfortunately, most of the guests come in, and are engrossed in their phones/papers and don't take the time to hold a conversation with the staff. If you took the time to develop a genuine connection, you might not assume (incorrectly) that smiles are hard to come by. You get what you give... and if the staff aren't friendly to you... its probably because you deserve it. :)

I headed here today in anticipation of the bircher muesli with poached fruit... but was disappointed to find the menu on here is outdated. It has been replaced with bog-standard muesli which I can make myself. So I had the eggs benny with salmon instead.

The eggs were perfectly cooked and it was a very nice benedict... the only thing that let it down was that the eggs and toast were cold. The salmon was as i like it - fresh and cold. Ive had eggs benny with cooked salmon and it's terrible. The parsley sprig is a bit old-fashioned now ... the dish would've looked worth $18 if it had a nicer looking herb garnish - surely chefs have much more imagination than that?

Orange juice doesn't come in glasses here and I was not asked if I wanted it in one. I see why other reviewers have said the place seems unfriendly. I did get the impression the staff had lost all interest in customer service, as it almost hurt the girl at the counter to smile.

As I really didn't have time to wait around I just walked up to the counter and ordered from the menu stuck on it, then found myself a seat - which wasn't hard as the place was empty (probably due to the lack luster service). But my meal did arrive promptly and I was out of there within 15 minutes.

I recall my last visit was in 2012, pre-Zomato, and the service was even without a smile then.
I do want to go back to try a few other things though. Maybe for work day lunches ... I wouldn't make a special trip in from the Hutt Valley.

The food was good, with nice presentation, and it was fairly cheap despite the small portion sizes. However the service was really bad. Our food took a disproportionately long time to get to us and we were often met with blank stares or blunt tones from the staff. First we had to move some tables together ourselves to make one big enough. Then we had to go and get the menus ourselves and almost went down to order ourselves before the waitress eventually turned up. When ordering, the staff also didn't know the prices of things that did not have the price listed on the menu, so it was a bit of a guessing game.

Good location for a central brunch, and although the menu had some unusual options, the food was of an average standard. The poached eggs in the eggs Benedict were not soft boiled, and the French toast was very sweet with not much thought put into the flavours. The drinks were very expensive, so overall an easy location but not incredible food.

Had lunch here with a small group of friends on recommendation from another friend. Overall we had a wonderful experience, the beautiful sun streamed in on us, and the food was fantastic! We were especially impressed with the build your own sandwiches, great value at only $6.50, and a good size, with awesomely flavoursome fillings. The other meals were excellent too, indulgent but not too much, and nicely presented.

Initially we were a bit shocked to be almost ignored at the counter by the tall blonde waitress, making ordering quite an awkward ordeal, one I would normally turn around and leave because of, however we persisted based on the recommendation.

It turned out to be very worth our while and I returned for breakfast which, once delivered was also superb. My favourite detail was the jaffas with my coffee.

The food was not great. But I was most disappointed by the service. It's weird how you can be waiting at the counter, there are three staff members right in front of you, and all three will pretend you don't exist for a good while until one reluctantly decides to deal with you. I know you can be busy, but it is not hard to acknowledge a waiting customer with "I'll be with you in a moment." I was also disappointed when my friend ordered a Guinness. He was brought an alternative dark beer, as they did not have Guinness. He asked if the alternative was similar to Guinness. The waitress was almost annoyed by the question and replied "I have no idea, but it's all we've got." She conferred with another waitress, who advised the same, then she left the unopened beer bottle on the table. Thankfully, my friend had a bottle opener on his key chain. The whole exchange made me feel like the customer was an irritating irrelevance at Cafe Classic. I have been to Cafe Classic three times and I have never had a good service experience. I find my friendliness normally secures me good service, but that does not work at Cafe Classic, sadly. Perhaps, they will start training their staff to provide responsive, friendly and knowledgeable service, but I will never find out, as I am never going there again.

My wife and I came here for a late breakfast. We both ordered the big breakfast and 2 flat whites. Coffee was good, our food promptly arrived and that was when the issues started. Same meals however on one plate there were no mushrooms or tomato. This was brought to the waitresses attention and a blank stare was the response. A couple at the table behind us asked the waitress where was their food as they ordered before we had arrived. Lets say, the Kranskies and bacon were ok, the rest was luke warm and of poor quality. Mushrooms arrived after I had finished my meal. Need to up their game before we will return.

Just want to say a huge thanks to Kim who leaves the cafe today. You will be sorely missed Kim, your service and coffees have been superb. But to the rest of the team see you next week when I come for my cappuccino with skinny milk and a vanilla shot.

Always great food and service. Chantal and her team are fantastic. No matter how busy they are they are always smiling and have a friendly greeting. I think some people need to realise that if they turn up for a coffee when it is busy they will have to wait until it's their turn so if they are in a hurry they should allow time for this. Its not fair to blame the staff as they work as fast as they can.
Looking forward to a lovely lunch there again today.

This place is in a word FABULOUS!!! A relaxed atmosphere and the staff are outstanding!! Special thanks to Kim and Vanessa for always giving outstanding service. Am there at least 2x a week as work nearby and have business meetings there. Food really nice especially the Tapas. Cant fault the place. Keep up the awesome-ness Chantal and staff!! A huge thanks and we recommend to anyone in the Thorndon area.

The service here leaves a lot to be desired. There is always a long wait for coffee - regardless of how many people are waiting. The staff don't seem to have direction on where to be or what to do - if you have 10 coffees waiting to be made do you send the barista upstairs to wait tables? No.
Food is average. If they sort their service out then I will be back.

Went for lunch today, in a word SUPERB! Great decor, friendly staff and fabulous tasting food. Will be going back
