Review Dumpling'd - Wellington

Lily
Stopped by for some dumplings about an hour before closing, and thankfully they were still serving! The lady that served us was really friendly and helpful, gave us recommendations for the menu and even things to eat/see in the area. It probably helped that we spoke a little mandarin (although very poorly) but she humoured us ◡̈ the dumplings themselves were not bad, I’ve had better where I’m from but I’m not complaining - especially after tasting the first bit of real chilli since we got to NZ!

A dumpling specialist on the Terrace with huge local competition in this specific location. The portions and options are good and fairly priced. The service is fairly fast and friendly. Look forward to eating here more often.

Good spicy wonton soup. Arrived during lunch time and it was crowded but service was quick. Everything was on takeaway bowls/boxes though, even when you're dining in, which was a bit of a shame. I suppose it was because they're mainly a takeaway dumpling bar.

I ordered online to skip the queue and the process was pretty convenient. The 12 for $12.50 deal was pretty good and the dumplings were nice but nothing amazing. They're the kind of dumplings that you get if you're on/near The Terrace and just want to get some lunch. Not the kind to get if you're craving dumplings. I did like the options for mixing your own dipping sauce though.

Good dumplings for a good price. Very convenient to order online and pick up.

Great little dumpling place in Wellington. Fast service and fresh food cooked in front of you. We were there on a holiday and the steamed dumplings were a nice healthier option from the constant fast food you have when you travel. The kids loved it too!

Good place not much seating options but you can have a take away. Dumplings were great and they have a big selection to choose from. Would recommend

Best fried dumplings in city

Brilliant food. Out quickly during the lunch rush. Delicious!

Cool little hideout, and tasty. Fried or boiled, lots of options.

Great Japanese style dumplings. Every flavour is great. Premises are cool too. Soy sauce & dumpling vinegar provided.

Great dumplings, marked down to 4 stars as you wait 20-25 mins for your order not ideal on a 30 min lunch break where you cant eat at work

Delicious dumplings, and very popular. I recommend booking ahead at lunchtime.

Decent price and lovely people to deal with. Would advise to order online if you intend to go there for lunch though, as it gets busy.

Some of the best dumplings I've had! Great food and exceptional customer service to top it off!

This is a good restaurant the mock tails are amazing but the dumplings were a bit of a disappointment. They mostly blended together.but it is still a great restaurant so 4 stars

I love dumpling'd best dumplings by far in the city - and great frozen too for home. The pork is delicious, beef too and chicken so good! The one thing though is their seafood dumpling, these are some of the worst dumplings I've had to be honest... It's so strange to me that all the others are so absolutely perfect, but that the seafood is like some weird mash of old fish. I hope they update their seafood recipe, cos I love me some good prawns dumple dumps, yo! So go here for now, and get 10 of everything except the seafood ones.

My go to lunch spot. Terribly missed as I'm in auckland now.
The 12 for $10 deal is awesome. Perfect lunch!
The sauces are delicious and honestly what I miss the most about working on the terrace.

Went to Dumpling'd for dinner for the first time, and was really disappointed with a number of things. I'm going to just cut to the chase and spare you the suspense.

1) It was my first ever time there, and I ordered off the menu right behind the cashier. When I later added that it was for a dine-in, he said that there was actually a different menu, and that I had inadvertently ordered off the takeaway menu. However, he said that they could still serve me my order since it wasn't a busy night, and handed me the actual dine-in menu for my perusal. That's fine and he was nice about it, but I think it could have been made more obvious that there were two menus. A bunch of customers after me also had to get the same explanation from the cashier, so it wasn't just me.

2) To my surprise, the dine-in menu actually only had dumplings listed as an appetizer. It was only one item out of probably more than ten items. The mains were dishes like sweet and sour fish, and Peking duck. Who serves Peking duck in a dumpling restaurant?? I was really perplexed because Dumpling'd has touted itself as a "dumpling bar", and so I'd assumed that its focus would be of its namesake. If customers came in and wanted dumplings to dine in, then they would only be limited to the appetizers. Personally, that would not be a great experience.

3) When I opened the box which contained my dumplings, they were strewn around as if thoughtlessly dumped by the chef. I understand that this isn't a high end place and I don't expect immaculate plating, but the sad state that my food came in was disappointing for a place that looks very put together, decor wise.

4) The dumplings tasted pretty average and wasn't as packed to the brim with ingredients as I had expected. They were quite thin.

Overall grade: C. Would not recommend.

Showstopper: Spacious, good lighting, and I did like that condiments are self-service.
Not really "The Best Dumplings" but definitely my favourite quick-fix-when-craving-dumplings place in Wellington. Not only is it cheap but it does taste good, with the condiments (esp the chilli oil) that compliment the dumplings well. Oh, and they also sell really cheap frozen ones which is definitely convenient for me (as I can sometimes add them in my instant ramen). Cheap, quick, convenient and delicious.

Went to the new Willis St/Boulcott St site today.
Great place for lunch, good dumplings, great price and even though it was very busy the wait was reasonable.
Will be happy to add it to the regular lunch schedule.

Was expecting good things from this place, but maybe my expectations were too high. Had the Shrimp and coriander dumplings and pork with garlic chives.

What a disappointment, the shrimps were cut to finely and felt like you were eating mushy baby food. Also the skins were not left in the pan long enough for them to crisp up. They were cooked but the skins were chewy.

The pork dumplings were better, but the meat lacked bite, and felt like they were over processed, when mixing the filling together.

Overall a real disappointment. I suppose this place is busy because of it's location and dumplings being the in thing. I would either eat somewhere else or if i had a dumpling craving go and have Yum cha.

These were delicious - we got a mixed combo, but I would definitely say the pork are the best in terms of flavour. I found the chicken to be a bit bland.
Weren't able to get steamed ones as they were nearing closing, but the fried were delicious.

Great mix of condiments to seal the deal, and frozen takeaways are always a good idea, as you'll want more.

After spending hours making gyoza, I would say that these are pretty darn good, and alot easier than making yourself.

One of the best dumpling places in Wellington. Both Pork/Garlic Chives and Pork/Cabbage were nice. Dumplings are cooked from frozen and definitely can't beat the fresh ones that you get @ Yum cha places. You can also buy them frozen too. Overall, nice lunch place to eat. It does get busy during lunch rush, so give yourself extra 5-10 minutes, if you decide to go during rush hour.

I don't normally write reviews online but I just had to for this delicious dumpling place. I ordered a 12 pack of their famous pork and garlic chives dumplings and they were absolutely DELICIOUS! They are decently priced and their dumplings have a very generous amount of filling. Wait time during peak hour lunch is around 10 minutes, which is definitely worth the wait for freshly cooked dumplings. They also sell their homemade chilli/satay sauces in jars which I've purchased and have been adding to everything at home. Would highly recommend this place!!

Super yummy dumplings for a very reasonable price. I think my pack of 4 vege and 4 shrimp was $8. They make them properly - I know because they also make them in front of you! Wow that kitchen had a lot of chefs. I also got edamame beans for $4, not sure why but I thought they would come shelled and they didn't. Their sauces are spot on, chilli, soya and vinegar. Feedback: why use so much packaging? Surely it will be costing you just as much as the environment. Also there is something not quite right with the lay out of the paying, serving your sauces and then waiting. Anything to make that large queue easier would be appreciated! Other than that - more dumplingd spots around Wellington please! You're a hit! 😀

Lovely dumplings, nice sizes and nice filling choices, it was quite busy - not sure if there is quicker way to get the food out quicker as there was a bit of a wait. Great sauces to take away, chilli oil, soy and vinegar to add a bit of dazzle dazzle.

Great affordable dumplings. 10/10 would recommend.

Great service and a cool place to stop by for a quick bite
You can also order for frozen dumpling if you want to cook it by yourself

The chilli blends perfectly with the dumplings.

10/10 would dumpling'd again .

Walking past dumpling'd a few weeks back I could see it was very busy so made a note to return when had more time.
Went back later that week and while inside was very busy, the food came out quickly

Cool shop , the food makes for a quick, tasty ,warm lunch. A 12 pack hits the stop with particular shoot out for the beef celery and cumin.

I've just started working across the road from Dumpling'd. I've been keen to try them as I like dumplings. Today was the day.

It always looks busy at lunchtime's so I popped in about 11.45am to beat the rush... I did. People did start coming in bang on 12pm. (note: I've been back again on a Friday and from 11:45am it gets busy).

The menu is on the desk by the till, and they have a menu board on the wall. Having not been there before I decided to try the $10.00 pack of 12 option. I chose two of each of the first six options on the menu.

I ordered:
2x Beef Celery Cumn
2x Beef Onion
2x Pork Garlic Chives
2x Pork Cabbage
2x Chicken Corn
2x Chicken Mushroom

The seventh option is vegetarian. There are also a couple of other options which are a little more expensive. For the Terrace, $10.00 for lunch is pretty reasonable.

So, I ordered the 12 pack, fried. They took 10 mins. They have three sauces available. I chose all three. Chili oil, soy sauce and vinegar. They have little pottles you fill up.

They come in a box which doesn't leak which is a bonus for any office worker.

They were nice and hot and slighly crisp. Good amount of filling and were flavoursome. They were very tasty. 12 was a nice amount. I could have eaten more though.

I can't say I noticed a massive difference between the different types, but I didn't care. But also, I did cover them in each of the sauces, so that probably didn't help me distinguish between them.

A very tasty lunch. I'll be back for more very soon!
