Visited for my daughter's 18th Birthday, table of nine. Yes,drinks were very slow to arrive but the food was amazing. Everyone was friendly and the rice-bowl catching wonderful. We had a wonderful time and would definitely recommend it to anyone! Thank you! ありがとう

I’ve been coming to this place for years and are in my top 3 restaurants in Wellington. Food is always so flavourful and tasty with good portion sizes. The vegetarian set is delicious and is my new favourite. They play interactive games which are always fun for the kids. The guy at the counter is always so welcoming and nice. I wish I caught the name of the chef that I had last time because he is my favourite and cooks everything perfectly.

Had a really awesome dinner here with my family. It was my first time experiencing the food being made in front of me. Even though we shared an extended dining table with other patrons, it felt very private nonetheless! The ‘cooking show’ was so much fun for us all, and we were in awe at the chef’s amazing talent. He was very engaging and friendly and the food was incredible. Very filling and it was quite nice having breaks in between each different meal to watch and chat and enjoy each thing that was made. Catching the rice and the egg was hilarious! The food was all mouth watering and the ice cream at the end topped it off. We all really enjoyed ourselves and the staff were all lovely. Nice authentic gem to find in the Wellington foodie scene! Will definitely be returning. I recommend the emperor meal (sorry if I have that wrong. It was the $65 set meal and included fish, chicken, steak, rice, green tea, ice cream etc)

I went there with my partner to have dinner the first day of the year and we had such a good time. The chef was amazing and entertained us with his teppan skills, plus the food was absolutely delicious. Even if they were clearly understaffed, our server did his best to serve our drinks as fast as he could, which was very appreciated. 100% recommended.

Great food & entertainment! Love this place! The best part is that it's only a short stroll from the crowded spots, just don't tell too many people 😄

Been here many times over the years. Consistent, quality, delicious food every time. If Ben is your chef, you're in for a good time. Would recommend the Kai Set. Fujiyama is a must try.

A fun family eatery with fresh food and a live show of teppanyaki grill cooking. Teppan grilling are typically propane-heated, flat-surfaced, and are widely used to cook food in front of guests at Japanese restaurants. The knife show at these premises are basic, but fun for the family.

Me and my son loved it. Couldn't ask for better service and cooking. Thanks heaps

Our team had our Christmas party here today and all had a wonderful time. They opened for lunch just for us and had one very skilled staff member who made the drinks, cooked the food, entertained us and then took our payment. He was amazing, so patient and friendly, didn't try to rush us. Thanks so much for a lovely time. 😊

Food is absolutely delicious here. Everything thing is delicious and the overall experience of the food being prepared it excellent. I enjoyed the whole night and portion size is perfect. I would recommend this place to everyone.

Parking was a bit hard and Google maps took us behind the restaurant, but the mission was so worth it. The customer service was amazing they were fun, you catch the egg in ur mouth if you can haha they flip bowls and u have to catch it. If you don't want to that's fine. The food was cooked infront of you, they communicate to your liking. It is pricey but you can choose a cheap one which is also good !! And the experience plus food is worth it. The amount you get is definitely worth it 👍😇 thankyou for a lovely time

Great entertainment by the chef. The food was very nice and there was plenty of it over the many courses. The restaurant could do with a bit of modernisation but it is ok. Need more attention to keeping the drinks flowing. They seemed to miss out on a good amount of extra income. Overall a very good group experience.
Victoria
Was great ! The chefs did an amazing job entertaining the group and funny trick shots. Remember to catch the rice bowl if you do go there ! Makes the dining out experience interactive which you can't get in many other places. One staff member ignored me when I asked for help which wasn't very nice but it seems all the other staff was great, kind and good at what they do.

Great food, friendly service and unique, definitely worth a visit

Had my son's 21st birthday here & we thoroughly enjoyed the evening. The food & service was great with the bonus of chefs cooking and entertaining us with their skills. I've developed a taste for warm Saki now 👍 The price of the evening was very reasonable as well. Thank you very much 😊

Went here with my fiancé and friends for our birthdays in September. We used a grab one voucher which was good, if we didn’t have the voucher I wouldn’t go back again as normal price is expensive for what you get.<br/><br/>It was a nice experience and the food was ok, some a little overcooked and some not as flavoursome as we would have liked. Portion size was good, I was very full by the end of the night.<br/><br/>Our cook wasn’t as out there as the others in the restaurant and it was quite obvious as the others were loud etc. it wasn’t bad it just wasn’t GREAT. <br/><br/>Overall a nice night out for dinner with friends and an entertaining atmosphere.

I would not recommend Fujiyama unfortunately. I have had two bad experiences with this restaurant. The first was our staff Xmas dinner a year or so ago. We were kept waiting 2 hours for a table despite having made the booking weeks beforehand and them fully expecting our large group. Our last experience was similarly chaotic and unpleasant. On this occasion we took a couple of people who have disabilities and who are in wheelchairs & who need full support to go to a restaurant. We had a voucher which would have sufficed for two people, yet we were told we couldn't have a table unless our support staff ordered from the full menu and they wouldn't allow the two people we were supporting to share the voucher - even though it was for two people! Our staff felt pressured and uncomfortable and what was designed to be a good deal on dinner out turned into a really expensive exercise for very poor service and very mediocre food. Never again. Don't buy the Grab-One deals for this place - a complete rip-off.

We were a party of 10, it was a great service with delicious food, not huge portions but we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Thanks!! :) Don't really understand some of the negative comments below

Amazing food and really good service and atmosphere. Only downside is the price but almost worth it for the experience! Definitely will be coming back though.
Kris Bubendorfer
Had a wonderful tasty and entertaining dinner - enjoyed the set menu with lots of variety.  Will certainly be back in the future.  No idea why this place has a low rating, its much much than that.
Mels Whyte
I'd say about a 3 only because it is quite expensive and very small portions but other than that, i really enjoyed the atmosphere and the food was tasty.  All the staff were lovely.
Alex Ishikawa
Worst Japanese restaurant in New Zealand. Their teppan yaki was rubbish with fake performance. Not only poor service and tasteless food, there is no way to throw any food into customers' mouth. When I refused it, the person who was serving us tried to force an egg into my mouth! <br/>I have seen many teppan yaki performances in Japan, US, Australia, etc, however I never seen such pathetic one with no respect for Japanese food. It was the first time for my husband to have teppanyaki so he was excited. However he didn't enjoy it, even he didn't know much about it. We will NEVER go back.
Rosie.pinckney
Tasted like disappointment. Don't get the grabone and don't go here. Flavourless and overpriced. The staff made up conditions about the grabone on the spot that were not in the fine print, or anywhere else
Rubin Smith
Food was terrible and WELL overpriced for the produce that came , wouldn't go back or recommend to anyone . Money would be well spent somewhere else.
Angie Liu
Been here with a group of friends we find it really entertaining the teppanyaki is really fun and great experience, chefs have great service! Food was decent too and especially if you go with a group of people for the teppanyaki service!

Extremely disappointing!! We paid $32 each for a steak meal and sorry for language but it was shit! Really small portions of meat and just a small bowl of salad, and I mean small like the size of ur palm small and the meat portion was smaller, they cook everyone's meat together then spread it between all the people. There were noticeable size differences between everyone mine alone had atleast 8 pieces of meat it was really bad we all left hungry! Never going back and it so sad cause we always dine with atleast 12 people regularly never going back! The lady said it came with salad, steak and veges but where were the veges we asked her at the end and she blatantly ignored my partner, she also lied about the size of meat we would get! I would rather have gone to lone star just saying! Not to mention they stuffed up the order of people who ordered what! We didn't get any fried rice when we ordered it and had to pay for it aswell!! 1st time there was great but last time was shit so never again!

Really disappointed with dinner last night, would rate it lower than 1 if I could. I ordered the tofu and it came with a broth. I did find it really salty but it just got worse towards the bottom. I couldn't eat it so I sent it back and the chef came out and confronted me. He said you already ate half of it so we are going to charge you for half. What a joke. Abhorrent service and did not appreciate the chef's attitude. Honestly, I would have asked him to replace it but I couldn't trust that he wouldn't spit in my food, as he looked so angry. Also as I went up to pay, I saw the bar person pouring boxed wine into a variety of empty expensive looking wine bottles that other BYO tables obviously left behind. Do not recommend at all.
Kristin
After reading the reviews I wish I never bought a grab one voucher. The service was very slow and the food is very expensive for what you get, even with the discount. For those in the group that ordered a main were especially ripped off. $36 for a little bit of steak and little veges is crazy. The ones that ordered mains had to wait until the very end of the set menu service to eat, so they were starving. The boys who ordered mains were still hungry after so they got BK. My set menu was ok, but my fish was so burnt I couldn't even eat it. The experience was fun at parts but not worth it. Won't be going back...
Natasha Frewin
Great fun!! the food was delicious, the chef was entertaining and got everyone at the table involved. We ordered the set menu which was a great choice, enjoyed a variety of foods and everything was fresh and hot - the bonus of it being cooked in stages in front of you.  Unfortunately not all of us managed to catch the egg (or the rice) but it only served to make the experience more fun.

We went here on a Sunday night. We had a Grabone voucher and didn't realise that limited what you could order. Essentially all the cheaper set meals are not allowed with a voucher >:( meaning those of us who did get set meals had to pay at least $35 each.<br/>I wasn't interested in that because it had seafood so I got the teriyaki chicken main meal. I assumed, being a similar price to the set meals, that it would be a large enough portion for dinner. I was woefully incorrect. It included a small (yummy!) salad, chicken and maybe 1/3 cup of fried cabbage. The amount of chicken was so tiny, I ate it in 2 minutes and then had to sit there watching my friends who ordered the set menu receive dish after dish. Though those portions were small at least they added up to a lot more. They ended up giving us their bland fried egg rice because we were so hungry. I ordered plain rice to go with my chicken but it didn't arrive until way later... who wants to eat plain rice by itself? We also had to wait a long time between for every part of the meal. The little chicken I had was fantastic though. <br/>The chef was entertaining and the tricks were reasonably cool but in my opinion not worth the price tag.  I would have gone without all of that for a larger portion size. Totally disappointed. As a student, I felt that this was a massive waste of money, even with the voucher - that essentially forced us to spend more. We went to Maccas on the way home because we were still hungry!<br/>Don't bother going here unless you have a lot of money and put a lot of value into this kind of experience. If you do go, get a set menu of at least $40ea if you want to be filled up. Don't even bother with a main. Probably don't even bother with this restaurant :(

A group of friends and I went there hoping for a great experience, however, it was awful. Firstly, the service was poor. Not professional. We had a GrabOne voucher which limited our choice of food meaning we needed to spend far more than we had intended to. The entertainment was alright however the food was very underwhelming. Not very authentic. Our chef was Chinese and most staff were too. The meal portions were tiny and everything seemed very cheap (using cheap steak cuts and caged eggs for fried rice). Not worth the price you pay. Will certainly not be returning.

We dined here last week and it was a truly awful experience. We had made a booking but they hadn't written it down so we had to wait a while for a table. When we finally sat down we were told to order straight away, in the space of 5 minutes we had three different staff members come up and push us to order food. When we did order they were very unclear about how we could use our Groupon voucher. We finally ordered three set meals but there was no teppenyaki! We didn't get a show nor did we get to catch our eggs in our bowls like every one else. When we asked why they told us they thought we were vegan and didn't want any of that?! Also twice when we went to use the ladies there was no loo roll, despite asking staff to fix this I walked in straight after a female staff member who had obviously used the last of it and not replaced it... Thanks a lot. The food was bland and over priced and the service was the worst I've ever experienced.

Possibly the worst meal in wellington to date. Would strongly recommend against this place! Horrifically overpriced for uninspired rice and basic veg. <br/><br/>My friends and I all had the vegaterian set menu because they don't eat meat and I didn't want to eat proper food in front of them. The chef didn't throw our food or have a laugh, he just undercooked our tofu in front of us and retrieve the rest of our sad meal from the kitchen. Afterwards, the waitress told us we should have specified we could eat egg if we were after the tepanyaki experience. She didn't ask when we placed our order, but must have just assumed we had come to a tepanyaki restaurant in hopes of avoiding an experience. Instead we paid over $40 a head for about $5 worth of poorly cooked veg. Bah!<br/><br/>On the plus side, I did hear on the radio that Rowan Atkinson once went there and shouted a table of strangers their meals. You could always hold out for that.
Mya
I love a good teppenyaki... unfortunately this show wasn't great. The chef performed a few sub par tricks and then went ahead and served the meal. No fire onion volcano, no shrimp thrown into his hat, no juggling tricks, just a couple things we had to catch.<br/>The meal itself was worth the $75 voucher price but not the normal price ($150). The portion sizes were adequate but not generous. There was nothing that made this experience special. I would suggest the saki over the red wine, it was like drinking a balsamic vinegar.<br/>On the bright side the tuna starter was fresh and delicious, and the dumplings were better than average.<br/>I asked for the steak rare and the chef didn't disappoint. The salmon was slightly over done but still full of flavour. Salt and butter made everything better. The fried rice was the best part of the meal.<br/>It's a shame the performance didn't live up to the possibilities. A better show would make the experience memorable. At this point I would not likely go back. But I'll never say never.<br/>Perhaps this experience was an exception. The restaurant was slow and therefore the chef may not have been too motivated.<br/><br/>

My partner and I came here because we had a $20 off voucher which we purchased off grabone. Even with the discount our overall experience was very disappointing. Due to our voucher it meant we could only order certain things off the menu (which was not stated when we bought our voucher) Our meals which were cooked in front of us on the grill were such small portions and for the price we paid we thought it must have been a joke and that the staff would eventually bring out the rest of our meal. We paid $80 for a tiny amount of food that wouldn't even satisfied a small child and left still very hungry. The waitress didn't bring over water when we asked for some when placing out order and then 20minutes later when we asked( assuming she had forgotten) she rudely points over to a group of empty jugs hidden the corner (which did not help us simply wanting something basic as a glass of water each) Overall a very disappointing experience. The actual chefs were great though, very entertaining... It's a shame about the rest though

Came here for dinner on a Monday night and ordered the Tokyo set menu. Our chef for the night, Tony, delivered a scrumptious feast which I could hardly fault. The highlights included melt-in-the-mouth fish along with a tender and juicy steak and succulent chicken. These were delivered alongside an impressive display of lightening fast knife skills and hotplate fire antics. We were also challenged to catch our food - an amusing and exciting way to start our meal. I would firmly recommend Fujiyama as a reasonably priced, friendly and entertaining dining experience, not to be overlooked by anyone in Wellington.

I was a bit worried about going due to the not so great reviews, but I had a great experience!!!<br/>My husband and I took our 4 children to the restaurant last night and were greeted with friendly staff and seated in front of a grill.<br/>We ordered a set menu and the chef was great, and the kids loved the show he put on and so did we.  <br/>The food was great and the service was amazing.  <br/>A Great restaurant for families as well as couples

Main Thing Food Was Good Waited A Long Time For The Chef To Come To Our Table The Menu Looks Like It Was From Years Ago,Too Little Staff and The Place Needs To Be Renovated. Overall It was Not Bad The Food Really Paid Up For The Cons But I will Come Another Time To Try Other Stuff Because They Had Lots Of Good Stuff On The Menu! Will Recommend To Try It Out!

There really is a need for zero star and negative star ratings.<br/>I went here with some colleagues. Food was bland and miserable. Everything was well over priced.<br/>The "show" was dull and lacked enthusiasm. The two guys delivering it came off like counterparts to Edward gein.<br/>Bar staff were disinterested, sour and generally rude.<br/><br/>Suggest avoiding this place. You'd get a nicer meal and more pleasant experience foraging n rubbish bins
Zoe
Don't eat here, it's just not worth it. <br/><br/>It's become somewhat of a work tradition to go out together and eat Teppanyaki, so we've been to a few.. This one is below average. The food was average, the showmanship lacking and generally the entire evening a huge letdown. <br/><br/>Now I'm somewhat soured by the fact I had raw egg thrown at me, which yes I failed to catch, but 1. It was a bad throw & 2. When the customer misses the catch and ends up covered in raw egg don't just move on like nothing happened, at least make a joke, maybe?? <br/><br/>But oh no our lacking in any for of charisma "chef" did exactly nothing. No one even did as much as to offer me a napkin to remove the raw egg that I was now covered in. No one apologized, no one gave me a wet towel, no one even acknowledged that I was now covered in raw egg. <br/><br/>So unless you enjoy sitting with raw egg in your lap, across your shirt and down your jacket sleeve I suggest you dine elsewhere.

I was pleasantly surprised when my partner and our close friends decided to take me here for my birthday last Friday 31/10/2014 - I had thought that we were going to the Ramen Shop in Newtown.<br/><br/>It was my first time to Fujiyama, although having been to Japan before and also having eaten teppanyaki in Auckland at Daikoku a number of times, I knew what to expect. I was blown away - yes, the restaurant is owned and operated by Chinese (not ideal for a Japanese restaurant), but the service was exceptional, as was the food. <br/><br/>Our chef did a great job of making our dinner a cooking performance, making us catch eggs (my partner missed his), bits of omelette, and bowls of rice. The food tasted amazing, and they chilled our wine for us (which we brought - BYO), ensuring it continued to taste fresh and cool throughout our evening. <br/><br/>While Fujiyama has a slightly hefty price tag (we went for Set B, which is $30 a person), it is a great treat, and you feel very full afterwards so it is great value for money. I would totally recommend Fujiyama :-)
Claire Pettigrew
Teppanyaki is normally a great show, but we booked a table earlier on in the evening and the whole meal felt rushed, as through they were trying to get through it and get us out so they could get the next lot in, normally teppanyaki chef's let you get through one course before they serve the rest, but he gave us the lot pretty quickly, it just isn't the same when it starts to get cold.<br/>Food isn't great quality either, definitely not very authentic. <br/>The show is great, but otherwise the atmosphere is pretty poor. I guess ultimately I can think of much better ways to spend $50.
Michelle
This is a really fun way to enjoy japanese BBQ food. The chef cooks the meal in front of you and you play several games trying to catch the flying egg pieces. Definitely entertaining. Fujiyama is one of the only places to have casual fun and enjoy a delicious meal at the same time. The prawns were definitely my favourite which was cooked in a special japanese sauce and the teriyaki chicken was tender and moist. The steak was also a highlight for our family. We had an absolute wonderful time and will definitely be coming back.
Kelly Zhou
I went to there with my friends last week!!! We had nice barbecue food there...The chef cooked meals in front of us, which was really different from other Japanese restaurant. It was such a show!!! The chef was awesome!!! We really enjoyed the game part there!!! Although i dropped the egg, the show was interesting anyway...We all ordered the set menu that day. The salad sauce was beautiful and the yummy sauce for the prawns was also very nice. High recommend to have a party there!!! It is such a fun place to go!!!
Nicole Cooper
We went to Fujiyama on Saturday night (a group of 8). It started off well, we were shown to our seats quickly and we sorted with glasses for our BYO wine.<br/><br/>The chef was friendly, and entertaining!<br/><br/>But then it went downhill. One of us found a piece of glass in the fried rice! Shockingly bad! This was rectified with a free glass of wine and a free meal (as it should be - I would not be paying for a meal that has broken glass in it)<br/><br/>However, as we were leaving we saw the waiters filling wine bottles with cask wine - how disgusting. I don't go out to a restaurant, order wine, and expect to receive wine from a cask! And I don't think the wine makers would be very happy about this either. This is false advertising and completely wrong! I actually wish there was something more I could do about this!<br/><br/>I will not be going back under any circumstances! If I could give it zero stars I would....

Agree totally with the review below. Great place for a fun meal with friends. Used deal voucher. Will definitely go back. The Chef was very entertaining.
Chris Matthews
A group of friends and I went to try this place out with the help of deal vouchers. We went on a busy Friday night, and wow, the atmosphere is fabulous!<br/><br/>The whole experience of Teppanyaki was really exciting and just a great way to have fun with friends. We ordered the Tokyo set, and the fish was tender and delicious, as well as the chicken. Really worth the try! <br/><br/>After reading some of these reviews, I must stress that this restaurant is not a 'fancy' restaurant, and it's not suppose to! It's a casual BBQ restaurant with a great twist. Definitely recommend to people who intend on going with large group of friends to catch up or even families with children! Very entertaining. Will definitely be coming back.
Matthias Lein
Teppanyaki (where the chef cooks on a hot plate right in front of you) is always fun.<br/><br/>We went there with the whole family and all in all had a good time. The chefs were friendly and played the "usual" games with teppanyaki - throwing pieces of food into patrons mouths etc.<br/><br/>The food is cooked well, but not spectacular. Especially when one considers the price, I would definitely expect more than straightforward bbq. Even when we chose set menus for both of us (which are quite a bit cheaper), we still had to shell out $80. This is a bit disappointing since I can get the same food at a Chinese place for less than half the price. The show alone doesn't justify this.<br/><br/>The restaurant was eerily quiet and not even half the tables were occupied. We had tried to book before and had been turned away because "all tables were full". I'm a bit doubtful if this was the real reason or if the owner didn't want to cook just for us.<br/><br/>Waiting staff and chefs are friendly, but the front of the house appears very distant and uninterested. Since this is the first and last contact, better manners would go a long way.
Katie R
Food was plentiful and well priced. Definitely recommend the set menus e.g tokyo etc, it may look like a hefty price to pay, but definitely worth getting. The main course meals are small and pricey however the set menus have everything and ensure the fujiyama experience!<br/><br/>For the price of $36.90 we had salad and miso soups for entres, and then the chef cooked a combination of steak, fish, prawns, chicken, vegetables and also fried rice. I don't understand how the reviews say this place is not value for money! Place them all out on a huge dish simultaneously and you have a bargain!<br/><br/>If you're looking for a cheap meal for $10 i recommend elsewhere, whereas if you're looking for a fun night out with the girls/family and willing to spend, then this place is definitely recommended.
Mark Emanuel
I have eaten at a few Japanese restaurants around Wellington and would have to rate this as definitely the worst. We went here as part of a deal voucher - it is quite clear why they are needing it....<br/>The service was very slow and they were very inflexible with ordering options. We were told that to swap the chicken for beef would be an extra $8 dollars, though last time I checked chicken is comparable or even more expensive than beef. But what makes it worse is that straight after someone was allowed to do exactly as we wanted. We ordered two entrees, which while tasted alright, were very small and over priced for what they were. As for dinner, it was fun to watch the chef cook it, but as for the taste it was very plain and I could have cooked it better at my house. We were also duped into buying two small bowls of rice, at a cost of $11 , when we could have just gotten a set menu for $3 extra each, they made no attempt to explain the menu to us. The food was very expensive considering the portion size and quality of it. <br/><br/>Overall I rate this as quite poor, not somewhere to go if you want good food for a decent price.
Matt
Visited due to deal voucher.<br/>On arrival were ignored for 15 minutes and then on ordering were told our voucher could not be used on the specials. <br/>Felt a strong feeling of not being welcome - <br/>Service - Unfriendly.<br/><br/>Corkage for 4 people was $16 dollars - Expensive. <br/><br/>Waiter - Not organised, starters were given to wrong people.<br/><br/>Restaurant has potential as teppanyaki is fun.. The older lady, guess the manager needs to work on her manners as she comes across as extremely rude.<br/><br/>Chef was fun &amp; cooked some great tasting food.<br/><br/>The staff started cleaning up around us and took all our plates away because they wanted to close. <br/><br/>Management need to work on their manners and food is over priced.
Finn Lawrence
It is important that you understand Teppanyaki before you come here. Yes, the chefs will throw food at you. No, it's not a great place for a romantic date. Yes, do BYO wine.<br/>Went here recently for a 21st dinner, was absolutely spectacular. When we sat (were still waiting for a couple) we ordered the mixed tempura plate to keep us going as it was quite busy. Perfect tempura, no faults there.<br/>When the chef came out, we had all decided on the set menu, to get a taste of everything. The amount of food you get for the $30 set B is outstanding, they start you off with salad and miso while the chef gets the hotplate going, and then he will cook course by course as you eat what he has just finished making.<br/>Food was all perfect, a bit of a show in front of you on the grill, lovely atmosphere and all reasonably priced.<br/>Highly recommended, a booking of 6-8 is the ideal size to get your own bar to sit around.
Vincent G
Pretty average to be honest<br/><br/>Basically just a big overpriced hot plate/BBQ. They throw the food at you and expect you to catch it. Servings are small.<br/><br/>And after being to Japan, the food isn't Japanese at all...
WineListPlease
Came here on a Friday night for partners work do.<br/><br/>Good experience, great entertainment from the chef. Throwing bowls of rice and eggs. Fun atmosphere. Lots of laughs.<br/><br/>However, the meals are tiny. It's VERY expensive for what you get. The food is quite average. Luckily it's BYO to make up for price of food... and only BYO wine, not those large bottles of beer that almost look like a bottle of wine :P.<br/><br/>Good experience entertainment wise, but food was not worth it. Great place to take someone who hasn't been there before, but not the kind of place you would visit more than once.
W. Ferreira
I had to go to Fujiyama because it was a company function, but I wouldn't if I was by myself after reading some of the reviews here. <br/><br/>I have to give credit to the fun, however . . . <br/><br/>With the exception of the miso soup and the umeshu (Japanese plum wine) the rest was all Chinese food. <br/><br/>Service was OK. <br/><br/>The place itself needed a very nice clean up. There is no attention to details in that restaurant as an authentic Japanese restaurant would have.<br/><br/>No, I will not come back.
Akiko K
This restaurant used to be Japanese owned and the service and the food were very authentic Japanese style some years ago. Everything was just fantastic that time. Recently I came back to visit again. I was surprised that now this restaurant is Chinese owned and all staff are Chinese. The waitress were so reluctant to work and it took ages to serve us even there wasn't many people in the restaurant to start with. The girl who came to serve us was chewing a gum and she saw us with a bottle of wine. However she never came back with glasses. So we had to go over to the counter to ask for them. She did finally come but never offered to open the bottle. So we had to manage opening the bottle by ourselves. The service was just like that through out our stay. However we have to say the chefs are very attentive and eager to please the customers. The show is very entertaining. So it is a lot of fun especially if you go as a big group. But if you are after real authentic Japanese food and service, I suggest to go to restaurants owned by Japanese or even Kiwis.
Mark Richards
It was good food and good service. Nothing special, just good.
Jake Pearce
To enjoy this restaurant you need to have your expectations managed and clear. It is like crossing the idea of a restaurant with a night at the theatre. The food is excellent. The 'theatre' of being cooked for by a chef in front of you is superb - but don't go for a romantic dinner it is entertainment...the chef throws bowls of rice as part of the whole thing...The service can be interpreted as 'unfriendly and impersonal' from a Kiwi perspective in fact it is authentic Japanese - to be servile and unintrusive is to show respect. However they are very friendly if you show that is the experience you want.Cheers Jake Pearce

recently been for the first time, poor decor but very attentive staff, most helpful, language was a bit of a barrier, but we embrace diff. cultures - beautiful food, from, steak to prawns, superbly cooked, the chefs are not stuck up, totally relaxed and confident. My kids are under 10 and they had the best fun with the chef. BYO instead of choosing from wine list. :)
FOOD Wars
Not a bad place at all. The food is good and the cook is even better...providing entertainment while you eat and while he's cooking. The waitreses aren't around as much or attendtive, but it could be a cultural thing. Décor is just ok nothing too fancy. So many menu options - due to the BBQ options, this tends to make ordering a bit confusing so needs the waiters assistance.

This restaurant is absaloutly fantastic! I went there for my brothers 50th birthday last month and had a ball! Fantastic menu, staff &amp; food! I highly recommend it for any occasion!

I have been to this restaurant many times and have never been disappointed with the food or staff. It's not a five star restaurant, it doesn't pretend to be so don't expect haute cuisine. Great entertainment and the food is so yummy.

Pity I couldn't put no stars here. Went along to Fujiyama for a BYO birthday dinner. Two of the girls had wine spilt on them with no apology. We kindly asked for some sort of birthday celebration, they offered some pancakes which never appeared, honest mistake but they denied ever agreeing. When asked at the end about all of the above, they insisted we all pay, no apology &amp; then overcharged us by three people. Most alarming, we witnessed the staff filling up empty wine bottles from a cask... lucky we bought our own!

The service of the waitresses and hosts is typical for a japanese restaurant in NZ and it can me misinterpreted as uncaring or surly to some but all staff are very helpful if you ask! I have been there many times now and the food is always delicious and there is always enough to eat, but not so much you feel stuffed full. The bathrooms are clean but but flash, but for what the place is, it would almost seem odd for them to have glitzy new bathrooms. The plum wine/liquer is delicious, but I'd suggest if you are wanting wine make good use of their byo policy, the wine list isn't flash. <br/>Wonderful food, great entertainment as it is cooked, great atmosphere with friends but not a place to dine alone or take wriggling children. I'd recommend no one under 10. <br/>Enjoy!

After really looking forward to this place, i was very disappointed. WE though this would be a good place to to with the childre - we were wrong; the staff were unpleasant and sour, the food was delicious, but the service was rushed and impersonal, restaurant and bathrooms were freezing cold, i wouldn't recommend this place to anyone...............

What you are really paying for at a teppanyaki dinner, is the experience. Cooked food table side, knife skills to dazzle you, even 'thrown' at you. We'll the food fell short. To be honest we had, what tasted like egg foo young, some grilled prawns and just plain grilled fish. I could have bought this at a smorgasbord takeaway. The decor seemed a bit dated and in desperate need of some pizazz. The young men had excellent knife handling and hot plate skills but our cook hardly talked to us, I could hear the chef at the other hot plate talking, laughing and entertaining his diners. I found myself glaring over at their table/hot plate. Yes I wanted to swap seats. I probably won't return and at 70.00 for food and drinks for two, it was a bit of a let down.
