Awesome place, awesome food and then awesome service.

Me & the Family have had very nice meals from there. It's got great heating with the wood burners going. Nice staff as well & a menu with plenty of options. This would suit people wanting a nice quiet setting.

We went in and was told a bit of a wait ...but we ended up getting our meal after a little wait...steak salad and chips...steak was cooked perfect very nice tasty meal and service was very friendly staff ..will definitely go back !!

I had a good time! Everybody was friendly and we enjoyed our food. Not to mention the atmosphere is really well done, it's honestly everything I could ask for from a restaurant experience. Ran like a well-oiled machine.

Loved the pork ribs. Great for kids with toys and games. Kids meals were well enjoyed and the meals were a really good size so we all went home full.

Great place, calm, romantic, not cheap but the 0.5kg steak is awesome. Only if they work out the price it would be perfect place.

Enjoyed the new menu tonight. However had to wait awhile. .. still a great restaurant. And ambience.

Best restaurant in the Hutt Valley. Amazing service, and the food is always superb.

Absolute crap!!!! Highly over priced waited 2 hrs for our well under cooked food after enquiring what was taking so long. The description on the menu was greatly exaggerated as to what was served. No one even checked if our meals were ok. The drinks weren't great either couldn't quite put my finger on it but they surely didnt taste as they should have. Would have been completely happy to simply walk out. Head chef came over after and gave multiple reasons why it wasn't his fault nor that of the kitchen or staff. Restaurant itself was cold with no atmosphere. VERY VERY disapointted with this place I WILL NOT be returning or recommending to others .

We held out joint party at Porterhouse Blues in the weekend and had the best night. They were open to decorating the room as we wanted and really helped us to have a really successful party. The food was amazing and many of the guests are still commenting on how delicious it was. It is a great venue with everything we needed. If you're thinking of a venue then we really recommend Porterhouse Blues. Thanks so much guys, it was a great night.

Having been to this restaurant a number of times over the past few years tonight's experience confirmed that it has lost it's sparkle. We arrived and were seated quickly - with the manager organizing the water and assuring us that a waitress would take our drinks order shortly. A 10 min wait then occurred with the Manager coming back and taking our drinks order.... and that concluded the drinks consumed for the evening. We were not offered at anytime from there on in another drink of any kind despite sitting directly in front of the bar AND having both waitressess' and the Manager standing in front of us when not serving other guests. The food was average at best tonight - the pork belly had approx 5cm of fat on it that was not edible, the schnitzel was miniature and drowned in onion gravy and the veges with the steak would have done the raw food movement proud. While paying I waited to be asked how our evening was but no comment was sought from the Manager. My husband offered the feedback in the end that they needed to be more on to the drinks situation - no apology offered, no resolution, just a lame excuse that the waitressess' were college age and probably unaware. Such a shame one of the few restaurants in Upper Hutt not serving ethnic food has slipped so far.

Birthday celebration. Great service, very pleasant helpful waitress. Excellent wine list and the most perfectly cooked steak. Thoroughly recommend this place

First visit, nice atmosphere and decor. Was welcomed by the waiter who was in training, he did well, great friendly service. Food was generous but average in taste, soaked in gravy, made veges go sloppy. I would however visit again

Was recommended to me to try this place, booked a table for Saturday night for 12 people at 6pm. We were served entree pretty promptly however, there was a 2 hour wait for our main. No one came to explain the delay or offer any complimentary drinks etc. We had young kids that were agitated, hungry and tired. The restaurant was not full with only one other large table and a couple of small tables of 2 or 4 people. One of our party had not received her main after we had all eaten, we asked for this to be takeaway and the amount that was served was less than entree size for the 'pasta of the day' I queried this with the waitress and told this was the correct size. After paying for all of our meals there was still no explanation or apology. VERY disappointed!

Service was terrible,Staff obviously didn't want to be there.Only 4 people in there, yet food seemed to take a long time and my steak was over cooked.Given that this is a STEAK restaurant one would expect that if nothing else, your steaks would be perfect everytime. Will never be back,or recommend to anyone.

Came here a few months ago for a last minute evening bite. The restaurant had only three other people, yet service seemed to be slow. The servers at the counter were very friendly and welcoming. The food however was underwhelming. I ordered the lamb shanks, which had a very weird tasting sauce. My friend ordered the ribs and was highly disappointed as it was not as saucy as expected, and was rather dry. I ordered the “panna cotta” with a berry coulis, and was surprised when it came out looking like berry yoghurt in a glass. Certainly did taste like they just poured youghurt in a glass. Would definitely not return here or recommend to anyone.

Went for a meal as a party of 7 for a birthday dinner. Quiet for a Saturday night and only a couple of other tables of diners eating. One of our party arrived early and ordered a drink from the bar, she decided to sit at the bar and was told by one of the staff serving that she was 'sitting in his chair' There was only one bar stool at the bar. Made her feel uncomfortable so she sat on the couches instead. Dinner was booked for 7.30pm and 20mins in we were told that we needed to order soon. Waitress was friendly and was good at service and making sure we had drinks etc. Meals arrived and were nice. Fish of the day, Schnitzel, Chicken and Pork was ordered. A couple of meals tasted really salty, the Chicken and Pork and we think it was due to the sauce? Salt overpowered the meal.
A couple of desserts were ordered the chocolate brownie was nice, a bit grainy. After the desserts we noticed that the chef had cleaned up and the lights were switched off in the kitchen. Staff waited out front of house with jackets and bags ready to go home. We felt that it was time for us to go so we promptly finished our drinks and paid. Not a nice feeling to get the impression it was time to go. It was 10pm! Restaurant is open till midnight. Female bathrooms a very unpleasant odour coming from there. A very average experience which left some of us a bit disappointed. Staff didn't seem very enthusiastic overall apart from the waitress who serviced us.

Come here every so often and never disappointed. Have amazing sauces that go lovely with their steaks which are always delicious. Polite staff and fast service too.

Been here a few times and everytime the food has been great. Love the curly fries with gravy. Usually restaraunts serve them with aioli but the gravy is so much better and unique. Got served within. 5 mins of sitting down. Love coming here. Dont understand the 2.8 rating. Never a bad experience coming here
A pretty disappointing dining experience when my husband, son and I visited this week. We had lovely entree of cheesy garlic bread but then after my husband and son received their man's were then told my main was confused by staff and I would have to wait another 15-20 minutes to receive mine. I was offered a plate of chips or something from the bar snack menu but I declined this and the main itself because we didn't want to have to wait. We were pretty disappointed when we only had the garlic bread taken off our order. Where are the thoughts for the lifetime value of the customer and the repercussions of this bad review! Not sure if we will be back!

We chose this place to sit down and have lunch based on the reviews we read on here. Great to know that the reviews were right. We ordered from the brunch menu. Our meals were beautifully cooked and the garlic bread was really yummy too. Awesome friendly service. We plan to go back here for dinner at some stage

Me and my girlfriend went to porterhouse blues for dinner last night. I have been here before and it has been outstanding. Tonight we started of with Garlic Bread for our Entree very nice way to start of with nice and crisp probably needed more garlic on these but was still very nice. For main my partner ordered Boston Blue - 220g prime beef fillet steak served with a medley of roasted vegetables was meant to medium but she said it probably needed about 2 minutes more of cooking but overall her meal was very nice. I preferred and ordered a New Orleans Steak - which is 330g Porterhouse Steak with salad and fries and 1 x Egg the steak was cooked perfect Med Rare just what I asked for well done by the chef. But I did find the steak very fatty at the ends not the best so I cut away the fat from both ends and around the steak I have had a lot better. Me and my partner were just chatting and I had a pint of beer on my left hand side with probably about two or three mouthfuls of beer in it with out evening asking that waiter walked past and took my glass off the table and took it away we were both gob smacked he may of been new but they should always asked if u have finished disappointing. We didn't have desert but I will come back and try again
What can I say.....We went in for lunch and the waitress gave us a small limited menu so not really wanting anything off that we looked at the specials board and the chef/manager/rude git stood near the kitchen shouted "not doing any specials today".........We just left and yep they did manage to give us the blues, but not a place to go for a feed! Now on the forget that list!
Kayla
Best lamb shanks! I've been there a handful of times and each time has been lovely! My friend ordered the steak and that looked perfect also! :)

Bloody hell! This place is heaven on earth. Massive owners. We had a work function at this place and I was stoked as when the owners come out and had a jam with us (we'd taken our guitars and ukes). It was a great night. I would recommend this to anyone and everyone. Nga mihi nui ki a kotou nga kaimahi me nga ringawera ki tenei whare ataahua. Y'all rock!

Had a great dinner here tonight. First time dining here, recommended by a couple of work mates. The food was excellent! The best onion rings I've had in a long time! Very well priced, and the wait staff were super friendly. Highly recommended, we will be back for sure!

Hands down, the best restaurant in Upper Hutt. The staff are always welcoming and accommodating. I highly recommend the pork belly, it is delicious. In the dozen or so times I have eaten at Porterhouse Blues, with friends, and with family, I have never once had a bad experience. I love the vibe, the wait staff are fantastic, and the owners are always friendly and sincere.
Prices are extremely reasonable, and the food is always cooked quickly and perfectly.
Will definitely be returning!

We decided to go here on the strength of previous reviews and the photo of the mussels. Quite frankly I am stunned as to how they have managed to achieve 4 & 5 ratings. Maybe we struck an off night. I had the mussel entree, expecting the sauce to be creamy and unctuous like the photo but what arrived was totally different. 8 mussels secured to their shells in an insipid watery yellow liquid (it was the consistency of water). Hubby had the squid - he said it wasn't great. I had the Robert Cray beef & reef - the prawns were lovely, the scallops a but raw in the centres (so I left those), perfectly cooked medium rare steak, a mediocre salad with no dressing & one small wedge of tomato (it was more a garnish) and watery mashed potato. Hubby had the rib eye which he'd ordered medium rare and it came out well done - so was requested to be re-fired. The waiter agreed it wasn't medium rare. The wait was long on the re-fired steak and in that time I had finished my main (so essentially ate alone for the majority). The second attempt was much better. I felt like dessert so ordered the raspberry creme brulee while hubby finished his main. I had creme brulee at Taylor's On Jackson recently and it was served room temperature to warm. What I got tonight was stone-cold. I queried this at bill settlement and was told that other customers had complained about it being served warm, so it was changed. Given the steak needed re-firing and I had questioned the brulee ... it should have been enough to warrant a discount or further discussion at the time, but neither were forthcoming. This place is now in the been there done that category.

May 2017:

I was hanging out for a steak for lunch so headed back here... for $13.50 you get a smallish sirloin with chips & salad. everything was cooked perfectly & it hit the spot! Was issued with water & not asked if I wanted anything else to drink...

I have never felt the need before to follow on from a review done by the better half, but today is the exception. We came here based on a photo of the mussels the missus saw on their website, which bore no resemblance to what she got.She ordered mussels as the entree. I ordered squid with aioli. For a main she ordered surf & turf, and I did the prime rib. For dessert she ordered creme brulee, and I ordered nothing. By then I was over it.Her explanation of the mussels is below. My squid pieces were small, tough and chewy. I doubt this was squid. I doubt it even had a maritime history. My prime rib was equally disappointing. The Bourbon & Pepper sauce was watery and crying out for some reduction, and tasted of pepper and nothing else. There was no culinary skill on display here at all. It had been poured on the plate and shoestring fries put on top, and then meat put on top of that forcing the fries into the puddle below. The rib was ordered medium-rare and was delivered medium-well done so it went back. 20mins later it was replaced with something better, but asking $36.00 for this dish is insulting. We stupidly paid for it. In hindsight we shouldn't have. The wife's creme brulee arrived and naturally we expected a room-temperature baked custard of sorts with vanilla under a layer of hard caramel. We got a cold pot of what appeared to be chilled raspberry yoghurt. When asked why this was served under the name of a creme brulee the (very pleasant and personable) front-of-house chap said people complained about it when it was served correctly so they changed it. If that was the case, then why not remove it from the menu completely and not misrepresent your dishes to those of us that do have a basic understanding of food? And just prior to leaving I saw the pork belly dish on the pass waiting to be delivered so out of curiosity I found a reason to walk by and check it out. It appeared dry and unappealing, and the skin was not crisp. In fact it didn't look like it had been near a grill. And that was a $29.00 dish. And the cost of this culinary desecration? $129.00. There are much better places to eat in Upper Hutt for a lot less money.

Love the place!! we have been several times and each time the food has been outstanding! the staff are great and very helpful and offer a wonderful menu and their garlic bread is amazing, especially the cheesy garlic bread, I would quite happily just have plates of this for my dinner. We have been midweek and also on weekends and the service never changes it's always great and the waiter always has a smile on his face.

Been a few times. Staff are great . Great service and food was great too.plenty of tasty dishes to choose from... Would recommend to all.. child friendly and child's menu is satisfying.

Dined at Porterhouse Blues last night and thoroughly enjoyed. We were greeted upon reliable by friendly staff and felt very welcome. I ordered the Southern Belle and it was delicious. The bacon wrapped around it was cooked to perfection along with the stuffed potatoes and salad with a nice sauce. My mum ordered the Reef and Beef which included a range of seafood accompanied with salad, potato gratin and steak. We had a disappointing experience at the Portlander in Wellington where a slab of steak was $39 and you had to pay for sides on top of that (even salad). Meals were cheaper and had much more to offer. My mum found the meal much better and I was overwhelmed by how good the chicken was. Despite it being moderately busy meals were given out promptly and they had a great team who were polite and friendly. Definitely worth coming here again, highly recommend.

After visiting restaurant last night I came away feeling fleeced. Firstly the new menu was nearly identical to the old one, the only difference was the menu was on one sheet sealed in plastic. On ordering the pork belly I asked the waiter for his opinion he said it was a good choice. When it arrived it was two pork slices burnt on the outside no crackling and a very high fat content.Knowing a little bit about food pork belly is a dish slow-roasted and kept whole. Also I was charged a premium price for some thing that was substandard to say the least. My dining companion had the scotch fillet on the bone medium rear with garlic butter it arrived cold with not enough heat to melt butter. After telling waiter we were avoided and received no more service. I am sure one of the local high schools do night classes in basic cooking for people masquerading as chefs.

Thank you for your prompt reply untruthful as it was. Firstly do not take me for a fool if pork belly was cooked whole then fat would of rendered down, also if it was cooked whole how do you char both sides of slices. After mentioning to waiter he and rest of staff did a good impression of a chameleon and blended into decor. Finally you are located in Upper Hutt not Wellington so if you are going to charge city prices lift your game.

First time going to this restaurant and definitely coming back to this place. Had a group booking last Friday and enjoyed everything about it, the meals were great, the Lamb Shank was beautiful. The service was great from the waiter.
Sandi
Disappointed after being told how great this place is. Last night 3 of us ordered the New Orleans 350g steak. A good half of my steak was a thick layer of fat. When I told the waiter a couple of minutes after he gave it to me, he said he'd tell the chef. He never came back. On paying, the waiter apologised and said he hopes we'd come back! There was no offer to remedy the situation at all - even free dessert/coffee. We did have an Entertainment Book voucher, but that is irrelevant. My husband and I didn't think much of the meals - we had a far better steak and chips at The Cossie Club recently. We won't be returning.

LOVE this Restaurant/Bar!!!
My partner and I call this place our local because we go at least twice a month, we have taken groups that enjoy the food just as much as we do.
We have never had a bad meal once out of at least 30 times we have been. This place is awesome the staff are supper friendly, fast and efficient. We have been to a lot of places in Wellington that are no where near as nice as Porterhouse, i think they are doing really well for Upper Hutt. Our steak is always cooked to perfection, as well as the rest of the food, they are never stingy with the amount of food they give.
I recommend everyone and anyone to go to Porterhouse and give it a go!!! :)
Carlos
We won a prize in a raffle giving us $50 voucher. Our food was delicious i had fettucine and my wife had chicken. They were both very delicious and cooked beautifully. Very quiet atmosphere on the night we went. Loved the feel of the place with couch area and kids play area. Very friendly staff.. Hosts were great.

The main reason I wanted to try this restaurant was because of the claim they make about having the "BEST STEAK IN TOWN".

We arrived at approximately 7pm & were seated after I had ordered the drinks which were quickly made & then promptly left forgotten on the bar, I got up & fetched them myself. This was probably due to the fact that there was only one waiter to the 30-40 people that were there.

We ordered the Kumara Chips for Entrée, they were not cooked properly & were cold, dry & tasteless. In the meantime we were looking to get a bottle of wine but after looking at the wine list we came to the conclusion we would never be able to afford any of our preferred choices, the prices were unbelievable ! Guys this is Upper Hutt not New York.

I love my steak & for me its hard to beat a T-bone cooked RARE, so this was ordered along with the Fish Of The Day - Monkfish with Vegetables. When the meals arrived it became apparent without even tasting them that something was not right, the garlic butter lumps that were put on top of the steak were not melting at all. The meat was warm at best & grey all the way through & had a strange smell, to say I was disappointed is the understatement of the year. Also I would be very surprised that it was the weight they claim it to be, it was put to the side in disgust. My partner did not fair much better with the fish, fishy smell & veges that were improperly cooked - terrible.

I paid for the drinks & we left - never to return, which is a damn shame because we need a good steakhouse in Upper Hutt. Pleeeeease somebody start one.....

Went here last night and selected the pork spare ribs for entree. There was enough for the two of us and tasted great. They even supplied a finger bowl too. I selected the rump 500gm cooked rare with chips and veg. I have to say when I order rump I expect it to be slightly chewy however this rump was cooked to perfection and has to be the tenderest rump I had the pleasure to eat. Being an ex butcher I have some experience....service was fine. My better half ordered the T-bone and again was cooked just how she likes it. We will definitely be back.

I have been twice to this restaurant because I give everything a second chance. The first time I went there with a large group, I had a green lipped mussel starter. The way they were plated meant that every mussel was handled but not cleaned as they all had the beards still on and one mussel was completely closed. I sent them back and ordered a fish chowder instead. The chowder sauce was the same as was over the mussels and the fish seemed to have been the left over pan fried fish of the day, hardly edible. The waiting time from the starter to the main meal took a good hour.My main meal was Lamb shanks. I love Lamb shanks but those were the worst I have ever had, the meat was tough and dry, the mashed potatoes were bland and watery and the supposedly vegetable were plain boiled cauliflower and broccoli but they were cold, raw and watery. My desert was pecan pie which was supposed to be home made. The base was very watery and the whole thing was just awful.
My second experience was with the same group but this time we had a set meal which was as unsatisfying as the first. I talked with the owners but they did not care at all, their answer was: you can't win 'em all.
I would not visit this place again nor would I recommend it.
Ivan
I expect a restaurant meal to be restaurant quality not pub quality. I had a steak meal of average size. The steak tough and chewy and a large amount of fat had to be cut off, it came with frozen shoestring fries and mushroom sauce out of a can and two plain boiled cauliflowers and broccoli. Price $30. I think if you are going to charge restaurant prices for meals then you need to supply restaurant quality. This meal was pub quality at best.

Recently attended what was to be an engagement party, turned out to be surprise wedding! Food was devine and plenty of it, hosts were only too happy to help and very friendly. Venue was clean and comfortable and warm a great night had by all!!

Me and my girlfriends had a fab dinner! Food was divine drinks were great too we had no room left for deserts :). The only downer was a new waitress who go order slightly muddled but she had an awesome team behind her was great to see. will definitely be going back again!

Went back for the second time as my family really did enjoy their meal .the first time i thought it was ok . This time round i can say the food had improved and the steak (beef and reef Special) was exactly what i asked for Medium rear .the pasta of the day was excellent and some of the kids enjoyed the ribs which we brought home to polish off the next day .
This Family run business deserves to succeed and all my family thought the service was excellent .
Instead of going to the cossie with your family you should support this great family restaurant .with good decor and friendly staff and better food
One improvement for my next visit - the steinlager pure could of been colder -hey u cant please every one
Karen Gooding
Had a great meal ..... made the mistake of having an an entree which was large so by the time we had a main I couldn't try the desserts! Ribs were so tasty and main was great value and also very tasty. Good service and atmosphere.
Angie
Often go here for lunches as the fish and chips are excellent!! Went Saturday evening with a large group and the food was lovely. My steak was cooked just as I had asked so will defiantly be going again. Many thanks
Jane
Have been to this restaurant a few times and have received excellent service always greeted by the waiter with a big smile and always makes you feel welcome I usually have the schnitzel as it is lovely the salad is always fresh and tasty, service is excellent. If you can't eat all your meal as I can't always I was offered a doggy bag to take it home what a great idea don't always have desert as the meals are very plentiful. The deserts I've had were lovely. I have recommended this restaurant to my friends and have also taken some there myself as it has a very relaxing atmosphere it's a great place to have a chat and catch up with friends. Would recommend to all.

Thanks for the wonderful meals
Robyn W
Very average, have been there twice, first time our meals were totally cocked up and the staff didn't seem to care too much, we had the porterhouse mine should've been med rare but was more med to well done and rubbery, the sauces were also on the wrong steaks, my hubby was happy both times - as long as his steak resembles charcoal the rest doesn't really matter! Next time i had the eye fillet which again was over cooked, both sauces tasted the same although one was mushroom and the other was pepper. The service was poor we didn't see the waiter again after our meals were delivered. I think if they dropped the steak meals by about $5 it would be more suited to what you actually receive.
Shayna
We went for a meal at Porterhouse Blues on Saturday 22 December. The decor is great and we were greeted nicely and seated by the waiter. My three year old son was given felts and a coloring sheet. We ordered 2 steak meals and a cheeseburger for our son. It was delicious! We were very impressed with the porterhouse steak, best we have ever had, cooked perfectly. Overall a wonderful meal with great service. We will be returning!

Gordon Ramsey please help!!
This is a new restaurant to the entertainment book. My husband and I dined here on a Thursday night at approx 6.30pm. We were the only guests dining for the whole time we were there. The owners were sitting at the bar and the comment as we entered was "oh look we have people", not a good sign to start off with. The total of the meal came to $79 with the entertainment discount. The meals and drinks are quite pricey for Upper Hutt compared with competition. I have listed the issues below:
- only 1 waiter (no surprise)
- No knowledge of the menu at all. Was sent back to ask the chef 2 questions and had to go twice as only 1 question asked at a time as he forgot.
- Starter was bread and dips. Bread was toasted, although some were burnt. Hummus was like playdough, although the beetroot dip was lovely.
- Mains were served directly after the starter without any break
- Mains were completely unacceptable. They had no alternative to fries or mash potato. The steaks were well over cooked and were not seasonsed. One steak in particular, had a large amount of gristle. Salad was tasteless and there were far too many chips (with no alternative I.e. baked potato)
- Waiter did not check if meals were ok. When called over after meals could not be finished due to the quality, the waiter giggled and took the plates away. He didn’t return!!!
- When the plates were taken back to the chef, the chef commented rather loudly for us to hear, “why didn’t they complain sooner, the meals are mostly eaten”. One meals was barely touched.
- No desserts/coffee offered
- When paying, there was no genuine apology and the waiter didn’t seem to care
We will not be returning to this establishment and won’t recommend others to either. Such a shame, it has great potential.
