Review Sierra Cafe - Wellington

Crispy hot chips and belly pork hamburger. Tasted good but would have liked more belly pork. Berry znd chocolate muffin was excellent. Good coffee too. Not so crowded after 1.30pm.

The cafe is big and very busy, so gets a bit noisy. Great selection of food available. I had to wait 30 minutes for my food to come out, which was disappointing as I was on my lunch break. Would have been good for a heads up on the wait time when ordering from the menu. I would go again and do recommend

Lovely hidden cafe that is open on Saturdays as well. The current gluten free corn fritters and bacon can be highly recommended - a solid and delicious meal. Love that patrons can choose whether to sit on the dark side or light side of the cafe. There’s an option for everyone, also whether you want a table or a coveted couch. If you access it via the lift in the building, it is wheelchair friendly too.

Awesome service. Their cappuccino is very good.

Have been here about 4 times now so definitely experienced. Good prices, great location, very knowledgeable friendly staff. Only thing I’d critique is for things that come with toast like scrambled eggs or eggs Benedict, please either butter the toast first or give 2 butters. It’s really inconvenient and messy having to scoop all my eggs off, half butter them then scoop it all back on. Plus a bit wasteful all the little plastic butter containers. I really like it here other than that, coffee is my fav.

It's a nice place to catch up with friends for coffee ☕.

I come here in the mornings to get breakfast on the days I have to work in town. It's one of the few places that open early enough for me to do this. Thankfully the food and coffee are of a great standard. While the decor isn't amazing, service is pleasant and I can always get a table. It tends to be a reasonably buzzy atmosphere with people stopping in for takeaways and coffee catch ups.

Lovely, roomy cafe on the 2nd level on Capital on Quay. My partner and I visit it every time we come to Wellington. Their coffees are absolutely divine, really living up to the coffee culture experience that you expected when visiting Welly. We were recommended the Sticky Piggy Burger and the Meat Lover Burger for lunch, which tasted excellent. Almost like a bao bun filling but in burger form. Would 100% recommend. But coffee and food aside. The staff are lovely, friendly, and really put effort in making you feel welcome. One of my favourite coffee spots ☺️

Great spot for a work day lunch or coffee catch up. My usual test for a cafe like this is how well they do a basic scrambled eggs on toast, and Sierra nails it. Buttery and fluffy, with a choice of bread.

Great lunch. One of the better ones I've had in a long time. Sierra Cafe offers good food and and good atmosphere at a reasonable price. Well done.

Nice hidden away cafe. Decent prices and a quiet vibe. It reminded me of a hotel lobby/cafe...

Steak & cheese pie was microwaved warm; delicious but soggy pastry. Side of chips kept hot from delivery until last one heaten.

Great choices of food, adaptable to specific requirements, excellent real tea.

Excellent tasting fresh food & reasonably priced. A selection of vegan food available as well.

Went in today for a catch-up lunch with my friend. Ordered nachos. Sounded good. The result was a tasty concoction but WAY short of mince/ground beef. So many nachos to cover and so little mince...come on guys, for $18, more mince is needed to cover the pile of nachos! Won't be going back there.

Loved this place. Cheeky sign on the outside draws you in. Excellent service, and food. Cafe food at its finest. Would 100% eat here again..

So so disappointing. I paid $12.90 for a bacon buttie! It was literally a piece of bread and bacon. No sauce nothing. For $12.90 I would expect more than than. Second time I've had a bad experience here.

Lovely surrounds, clean tables with warm, friendly and efficient service. We had a lovely breakfast this morning, scrambled salmon and eggs on toast, poached eggs and green tea for two. The food was yummy, plentiful and even better a giant pot of tea with extra hot water. The little things that count which will see us returning next week for breakie! Well done Sierra Cafe! Cheers, D.

Went here for lunch. Was very impressed with the speed that our meal came out to us- Burger and Pancakes; less than 10 minutes and the place wasn't empty.
Good sized meals, and lunch was enjoyed. Also the staff were very friendly and helpful, making it a pleasant experience

Am a semi-regular visitor to the Sierra Cafe. No complaints about the service or the speed with which my food always arrives - essential when you only have a short lunch time. But.. would be good to see an alternative to shoestring fries - hand cut chips or even another type of chip. Also, although gluten free toast is available, there is no cabinet food that is regularly gluten free. Even the frittata isn't gluten free. Most cafes offer gluten free friands at the very least. Would eat at Sierra more often if there was a good gluten free range.

Wow great cafe Sierra, tried the fish in chips served in a wire basket. Great idea will bring my children back. Nice hot flat white, very busy cafe, friendly and fast service. Full cabinet, so many choices, one of the cleanest cafes I have recently visited. Like it a lot. I think I will be frequenting Sierra more often. I notice you cater to very much a high end business cliental but still seem like you would be very family friendly.

Having just called at this cafe this morning for coffee with my workmates, I am still struggling to pick my jaw up from the ground. I had the audacity to query the blonde, middle-aged woman behind the counter about Sierra charging an additional $1.00 for soy milk. This makes an ordinary latte almost $7.00 – and quite frankly – that’s ridiculously expensive. It does NOT reflect the additional cost of soy milk (I know, because I BUY it?!). Having had it confirmed that I was expected to pay $6.80 for a bog standard coffee, I chose not to have my coffee at Sierra, and to go somewhere else where they charge a much more reasonable 50 cents and I wouldn't have to endure the attitude and bad manners.
As I left, instead of behaving with grace, this woman started kicking off, challenging me – and screeched after me as I left "enjoy your coffee". As I was with three of my workmates, she then thought it would be a sensible idea to start bitching about me to my girlfriend?! (who is now equally as horrified as I am). Has this woman ever (a) checked the market and looked at other cafes (who do an infinitely better job in dealing with customers AND charging reasonable prices for coffee); and (b) ever attended a customer service course?
Newsflash lady : I am a customer – I have the right to choose how I spend my money and where I buy my coffee, and ought to be able to do so without being abused by the cafe counter staff. Well done Sierra – I won’t be back, my friends won’t be back, and nor will the countless other people I’ll be telling about this. Wellington has a fabulous coffee culture – there are plenty of excellent cafes who don’t attempt to rip off their customers – in a competitive market, I can’t believe Sierra lets this woman loose with customers. Wow.

UPDATE
Am giggling at both Margaret's response AND the review above (which seems like Margaret's been having a good old MOAN to her mates - oh, and nice touch having your mate send me an abusive message via this site - VERY classy!) ... LOVE your impression of what happened Margaret - will make a point of regaling the other girls who were with me with your version. As you will recall, I explained to you (quite politely I thought) why I wasn't prepared to spend $6.80 on your coffee (I buy the large size - so yes, it was $6.80 which (from a quick calculation IS almost $7 - odds of that??)), and left to go and get a coffee at Arabica (where they're ALWAYS lovely and don't charge $1 for soy milk!) - I believe I used the word "ridiculous" rather than "disgusting". And with respect, I was chatting to a restaurant owner the other day who lamented that people didn't explain when they were unhappy - they just went away and moaned to all their friends, so I was TRYING to explain to you why I wasn't prepared to pay an extra $1.00 for soy when it simply DOES NOT cost you that much to provide it in a cup of coffee. You immediately became defensive and rude, so I just walked away (because who can be bothered having to listen to a shrew??) You then, however, saw fit to start moaning and rolling your eyes at my girlfriend - THAT is what triggered the complaint to your head office (who have apologised on your behalf) AND the reviews online. People don't complain because they've got nothing better to do - it was because you were THAT rude.

The ONLY reason we even ventured into Sierra was because Verve downstairs had a huge queue and we were in a rush (Sierra was almost empty - I'm now starting to understand why).

As an aside (and to head off the "poor victim" tone below) I worked for many years in hospitality while I was at University and can unequivocally confirm (a) I NEVER spoke to a customer the way Margaret deemed fit to, and (b) I think you'll find every one of the staff at the cafes I've mentioned below has had a lovely, positive experience when dealing with me - that's why I go back there, because it's a positive experience! Call me old-fashioned, I simply take exception to someone in the hospitality industry being so outright rude to me (and you are clearly only still in the industry because you're the owner of the cafe in question - if you were an employee, you'd have been dismissed for your behaviour last week).

PS. Oh - and for other soy drinkers out there who object to being ripped off for making the ethical choice not to drink milk, Margaret has clearly been very selective in her "checking" of Wellington cafes. Nearby cafes (where you WON'T get this drama) ... Barista only charges 50 cents for soy; Verve - only 50 cents for soy; Vivace - only 50 cents for soy; Ripe - 50 cents for soy; Kyriani - only 50 cents for soy; Arabica - 50 cents for soy, and I can't recall Thunderbird's prices - I simply go there because the food's so great and the staff are always so much fun ... every single one of these cafes are a DELIGHT to buy coffee from (friendly staff, no screeching fishwives!!)

Love Love Love this place. Great selection of food. Don't know what to pick sometimes! Lovely friendly staff too. Often meet friends here for a quik lunch and always get my food super quick!
Haven't had a bad coffee yet! Keep up the good work you guys!

$4.90 for a scone? And margarine although I specifically asked for butter? That's just a rip-off. And the scone was very average - date without any dates to speak of. Disappointing and overpriced.

Delicious French toast!!!!!! Expensive but worth it!

I had lunch here last week and picked the quiche and a small side salad. I asked for the quiche to be heated but it was still cold in the middle :-( The side salad was small but the relish/chutney was yummy. They have a good selection of usual cafe food and I would be happy to go back again. Next time I would just make a point of asking for my food to be heated for a bit longer.

Came here for lunch. Decor is a bit like a chain book store, but the food in the cabinet looks good. Menu is pretty standard cafe fare.

Had a salad and BLT from the cabinet. Place was super busy due to Christmas but food and coffee came out fast. Flat white was quite (unexpectedly) good.

Wouldn't frequent this place but not bad.

My partner and I LOVE meeting up here for lunch. There is always an amazing selection of different foods, and we're always satisfied with our selection. Yum! And the coffee - mmmmmmmmm. Really enjoy the funky staff too! They're lovely! Especially love the decor and comfy feeling (especially on the padded wall seat).

Ordered Beef Nachos. Checked my plate and there was no beef. Asked waitress to check in case it was my mistake and they were meant to be vegetarian nachos. No the chef said they are beef and mixed with the beans. So invisible beef mixed with beans. Weren't interested in solving the problem. Staff very surly. Don't bother with this place. I only came here as I was really hungry. Wellington has so many nicer cafes. This won't last! What is it with arrogant cafe cooks?
