I live in Auckland but frequently travel to Wellington for work. This food is being amazing. I can’t express enough how delicious bang on. We have nothing like this in Auckland. Their Kung Pao Chicken or Schezuan perfection. I get out delivered to my hotel and it’s always hot because they vacuum seal it. Well done. Beautiful food.

The food here is delicious. While the prices may be on the higher side, the portions are quite generous, and the use of fresh ingredients to some extent justifies the cost. One thing to keep in mind is that if you are a vegetarian, it's important to inform the staff as some of the vegetable dishes may contain meat. This is a unique aspect of Chinese-style hospitality that may not be common in other restaurants, so it's worth remembering.

I love coming here for lunch as well as with the family for dinner. Quality of food is good and portions generous. Never understand why it is uncrowded because it's worth coming here for the food, service and the relaxed atmosphere.

Nice food and great service!

Fantastic food of lots of different varieties. They have the more western Chinese like sweet and sour pork as well as more authentic stuff as well. All the food is the best version of that dish I'd ever tasted. The service was attentive quick and friendly. Food also came out quickly and you really get the feeling they care about your experience. Love this place.

Ordered this evening via Uber Eats, the highlight for me was the stuffed chicken wings, it was crunchy, tasty and I wanted more. Tofu was perfect, mildly spicy, crunchy tofu. Chicken fried rice was delish, reminded me of my favourite Chinese place in Auckland. A little bit on a higher side, price wise, however, value for money, so take your pick. Am a happy beaver, tummy full and satisfied. Will definitely order again.

Food is okay at best, portions are extremely small for an Asian restaurant, and pricing isn't the best either. Not recommended for large groups but possibly more suitable for smaller groups

From my favourite white poached chicken, to the signature orange beef (a play on a sort of sweet and sour beef), and back, the food here is excellent. Last time I went we also had delicious hot salty prawns in their shells, slow braised pork and taro, and the combination seafood in a deep fried potato basket. If you care more for the taste of your food than anything else, Shanghai is a very underrated cantonese style restaurant and worth a try. Oh and they do BYO also ;) 4.5 stars

Went here for a friend's 21st birthday party.
Really delicious food and everything I tried was cooked perfectly and well presented. I really liked the turntable in the middle so people could rotate to get to try each different dish. Fun overall experience and good service. Would recommend and I'd like to go again.

We really enjoyed our lunch here. Our unanimous rating is 4. The egg custard rice noodle is the best we had in
Wellington. Sweet and sour fish, mapo tofu and salted fish fried rice hit the spot. However, the Singapore noodle is very dry. If anyone can recommend a yummy one, please reply below. Did I mention all lunch dishes are $10.

We had a family gathering here one night. This place was a regular for us in the past, and still we had high expectations. We were a little let down though. The food was really average. We had lemon chicken, Chinese vege, ma po tofu and roast duck, fried noodles and fried rice. The main gripe was that the meat pieces were way too big. It wasn't bad food, but there are other places around town that are better.

Live seafood if you are into it. The place also have a good selection of dishes from different parts of China. The Sichuan spicy chicken was nicely done with free range chicken with hot sauce. The overall experience was good but the price wasn't cheap- over 100 for two.

I went on 4 Oct 2016 in a party of 10. Total bill was $292. We had about 10 dishes and our group was happy with all of the dishes. We had steamed blue cod in soya sauce & ginger, tofu with mined meat, lemon chicken, duck with spring roll wrapping, long beans with savory meat, orange beef, banana fritter with ice cream, etc. We were about the only ones in the restaurant so ambience was nice for group chat & fun. Owner served us personally and gave us complimentary starter soup at the beginning and fresh fruits at the end of dinner. We brought our own wine and our own tea. Happy to recommend this restaurant if you want value for money, spacious and quiet ambience.

The Shanghai was our departed parents (back in the day) favourite Chinese restaurant. It was Dads birthday so we decided to go there for dinner .... Big mistake! Prices have gone up by $9-$10 on every dish, this wouldn't be so bad if the quality and service equaled the price increases but No it didn't. Not a taste of peanut in the beef satay, onions galore through every dish, customary tilt of the tea pot lid was ignored so we had to keep asking for top ups of hot water - charged each time, flavour was lacking in every dish and we ordered eight.
We decided that will be the last time we eat there ... Hello Grand Century / Dragon ...
Best dish of the night was the banana birthday cake that my daughter made!

We ordered Shanghai duck, crispy chicken and vegetables in garlic sauce, with a simple entree of steamed dim sim. We made a point of asking for the dim sim to arrive first. The duck arrived first. Sent it back reminding them of what we ordered. 20mins later our entree arrived. Then shortly after, the duck returned - now less than warm - with the vegetables (or vegetable really as only bok choy), then waiting for the chicken...15 mins later and still nothing. We were told that it takes longer to cook than the other items on our order...isn't it the chefs job to manage these things? But they checked with kitchen and was cooked but apparently too hot to chop up yet. We cancelled the chicken. And proceeded to leave. The hostess, who we presumed was the owner was exceptionally rude, refused to acknowledge how poorly we had been treated and argued with us as we left. If I could give zero stars I would. I don't ever recall leaving a negative Google review for anything but the way we were treated was totally unprofessional.

When I walk past this place I don't think of it much, after all the decor and signage looks like 80s/90s Chinese restaurants. Finally had the chance to dine here and I think the food is quite decent. The kitchen puts out some quite authentic and decent sized servings of Shanghainese and wider Chinese cuisine, unlike the bastardised dishes of other Chinese establishments in Wellington that seem watered down in an attempt to please Kiwis. Worth a try if you are a Chinese food fiend.

I think this is the best Chinese restaurant in Wellington. You will find any dish you can think of and they have got one of the biggest menu with plenty of choice to suit every palate. If you fancy schezuan than this is the place to go. I can't suggest any improvement except for the service and you will ignore that when you taste their food.

Restaurant going backwards.

Shanghai has never had the flashy decor but the new look is confused if anything.

The most important thing however is the eating and the food is not to the same standards as the previous owner. Also the portions are smaller yet the price has increased noticeably. I usually go for noodle dishes which used to be an impressive stack covering the whole dish. Now the plate is maybe 2/3 full at best.

Service wise the current owners and co need to work on their customer service skills. Particularly didn't like the attitude one of the girls had. She would be out the door if I was the owner.

Shape up Shanghai or you will sink and be forgotten.

There is a guy there who's nice to deal with. But the lady (in PJs) there is extremely rude and unprofessional. No customer service, didn't bother apologise for their error. I felt unwelcome to be honest. I'm not sure how a business with such bad service survive. Not impressed and wouldn't go back.

The best Chinese restaurant in Wellington city, especially suits some one like spicy food. If I dine out, the first choice will be here. Always friendly, always good taste.

We were with 7 and half of us had finished our meal (even after waiting) one of the meals was cold, the lemon chicken was dry and they took way too long. They offered no apology... Until we asked them where our meals were. No discount or anything, just excuses.

not an original shanghainese restaurant. love the sauted glutinous-rice-flour hard-cake. The small steamed bun is not so authentic as the one in shanghai.

I popped in for a lunchtime meal, as their window menu looked promising.

The two staff members on duty when I was there were clearly under-worked and had no intention of rushing anything at all.

However, unasked for tea arrived but no water offered or ever turned up, even if it was evident at other tables..at least three left uncleared!

My order of the combination noodles/chow mien was perfectly presented and a most generous portion too, especially as it was under $10. Although they were not busy and the staff were avoiding clearing tables and the kitchen staff could be heard enjoying themselves behind the scenes, it was worth the wait and was piping hot and a really well balanced dish, with clear evidence of each meat and fish; this is unusual for such a place and price in Wellington and is a credit to them.

Overall impression: greeting and service can be worked on to actually make customers feel welcome, especially in such a competitive lunchtime marketplace..so many places to choose from.

Staff should clear the tables as soon as customers have left, not left for new customers to see when they enter. Both staff members looked and walked passed the 'offending' tables several times and ignored clearing them up! The female member of staff was either reading or on the telephone and had to be encouraged to go a see to customer needs.

The food, when it finally turned up, was delightful - hot, well presented and generously proportioned...really tasty food.

When I commented upon the food quality at the pay station near the front door, the guy ignored the praise completely.

Would I go back? Yes, as the food was very good and as an optimist, I'd be hoping the service would have improved a lot.

If you like sichuan food, this place is excellent. The pork dumplings were good, the spicy won tons were just wonderful, and the spicy beef main was excellent. Service was helpful in explaining menu items and food came out promptly and as it should be. Mains particularly are generously sized - we were pretty full with 2 mains and 2 entrees. Will totally be going back!

They served decent lunch, but the foods served at dinner are below standard. Our last visit, we ordered stewed pork belly with yam, although the dish is hot, but the pork belly was still cold. I suspect they microwave the pre-cooked dish instead of cook to order.

meal portions at this place are huge.love their spicy meals.you might be expected to wait a bit for your meal when it gets busy.

I have never had such bad service in my life. We booked a group of 12 a week in advance and pre ordered the food to arrive at 7.30. the first 2 dishes came out but then we had to wait for 20 minutes for the next one and the vegetarian dish for two people in the group that were vegetarian didn't come out until 8.40. all through out the meal we asked for the vege dish but got nothing but rude responses that it was almost ready! then we asked for a discount because the two veges had to wait the entire time without food the woman started yelling at us. i would give this 0 stars if that was an option
