Review Brew'd Island Bay - Wellington

Robert McDougall
Great easy location and good food. Wasn't sure how I was going to tackle the Beef & Chook Burger as it was so high, but I had to try and managed it - bun could probably have been a touch bigger to allow for all the contents, but small point. Son had the kids burger which he enjoyed. The quesadilla did have sweet chilli sauce (which was a surprise as it isn't mentioned in the menu) which meant my son wasn't as keen, but for me it was nice. Service as always is friendly, the place well presented and with the outdoor area out the back it's always a nice spot if that's your thing.

Delicious food, welcoming and very flexible with our requests... the staff were so kind and made us feel very welcome and comfortable. Thank you so much... a fabulous and filling birthday lunch!

Great Island Bay addition from the Wellington Hospitality Group! In the style of the surrounding suburb, Bret’s is a bit more kid back than your average bistro. A sunroom for a dining room, a decent-sized, turfed backyard and a cool main bar ensure enough room for all. In true WHG style, the drinks offerings are strong. An excellent selection of beers with a preference towards Fortune Favours, Garage Project, and Panhead, heads off a large drinks list. Taps change frequently just to keep you up to date. Likewise food goes down a treat with four pizzas (and a Two-For-One deal Sundays) six burgers, and a deliciously charming mains section. The Brisket Burger was superb, the calamari salad was hobbled up quick, and the fried chicken - whether plated or part of a beef and chicken burger - didn’t last long. Go here for a quintessentially kiwi experience topped with good food and drink!

Great burgers and loaded fries. Good range of local beers. Live music was awesome. Recommended for a slow Saturday afternoon

Love this place, it is most definitely THE BEST address in Island Bay ! Staff is so friendly and lovely, the garden bar is a really cool spot to hang out on a nice day (and dog friendly !) and the gorilla burgers are really yummy. Fantastic experience, I will absolutely be back and highly recommend !

Great service, beautiful cocktail and deliscious burgers. Would have loved to see Kumara fries on the menu as I'm not a potato fan but thats purely personal preference😉

Took the family in for a meal and was a good experience. Atmosphere was nice and family friendly. Demi the waitress was knowledgeable about the menu and gave the kids pages to colour in. Dogs are welcome which is a bonus. Will be returning soon

Brewd is an excellent establishment. Despite the night being very busy, and clearly being overrun with customers, the food and service was exceptional. In particular this lovely girl called Bella was friendly and had great menu knowledge. She was a superstar!!!!!

Great little pub in Island Bay,I really enjoy the vibes but shame about the gorilla burger being the only food option. They used to do nice pizzas. Gorilla burger can be categorised as expensive McDonald's. Meh. 4 stars

As always the bar staff are great . Lovely and welcoming. The new chef is fantastic! Pork belly salad was great and the brownie was delicious.

A great place in Island Bay to chill out after work. Love it!

Absolutely Delicious meal, best Gorilla burger I have had so far. Our Waitress a gorgeous young lass called Demi went out of her way to find us great seats and give spot on service. The music was pleasant and the atmosphere fun and inviting. We will be recommending to others and returning no doubt!

The Gorilla burgers are just so good. Really happy to discover yesterday the bar now has some Parrotdog beers on tap too. It’s great to have more variety than Fortune Flavours beers - which just aren’t that exciting.

Friendly staff and good food. With many local and NZ breweries on the beer list the actual selection leaves a lot to be desired. They seem to have picked the low alcohol and easy drinking varieties instead of being a bit adventurous. It's also annoying the actual beers are not on the list, just the breweries, so the conversation with the waitress gets a bit boring...

The guy waiter was very friendly. We arrived at 4pm wanting a late lunch but were told dinner menu didn't start untill 5pm which was ok so came back at 5pm. The female waiter was a bit forgetful when our food came asked for another jug of beer which never came and when we went to leave she tryed to charge us for it. Luckily she read out to us what we were paying for otherwise we might of paid for it and not even known. Food was good very large portions couldnt even finish it.

Went as part of a large pre-booked group. The food took FOREVER ! To arrive. Even the kids meals took close to an hour, and when it's a couple of pizzas and chips it really makes no sense. Not all the kids orders came out at once (more than half difference despite being ordered within minutes ) and on top of that the adults meal that the wait staff knew was linked with the kids took so long, that we cancelled them. They'd not even started cooking them when the kids asked to go home because they were tired! The food was actually ok, but if a place takes a large group booking it is assumed that they have the capacity to handle the workload. I left without eating, and therefore would never go back on principle.

Food is inconsistent. Tonight's schnitzel was battered and deep fried instead of crumbed...weird chewy mess.

Really nice burgers, great atmosphere and surroundings. Good beer selection too. Would of been 5/5 if the older waitress we had wasn't so grumpy.

Great local bar and restaurant and a welcome addition to the Island Bay community. The fit-out is cozy with fresh and interesting interior design. Highly recommended.

Best burger I've had in NZ and awesome kumara wedges!

This place takes the pi$$. First up do not believe the opening hours. A group of 7 were asked to leave at around 830 pm recently cos they were closing the bar, even though we were wanting another drink and a snack. Not the first time we have been pushed out before 9pm. Friday night is busy and usually understaffed so 15 mins queuing for a drink - must have been a surprise to have a crowd come in on a Friday after work. And by 730 they had run out of chicken wings of all things. By 930 staff were grumpy. Come on the Bay - can someone please open a decent bar which is about the customers and not the cost cutting franchise owners.

Very cosy and nice atmosphere. Staff were super lovely and friendly, and food was quick and yummy and plentiful! Cannot really fault any part of the night

Fabulous friendly bar/restaurant with great food and good specials. A step up from most bars. The atmosphere is cozy and friendly and the restaurant had a lovely old vibe growing through it - must be the island bay Italian influence!

Food is sooo good I went there for dinner once and I used a netball c upon I had the burger and chips. When I got home I was so full but in a good way. The next day I wanted to go back but realised I had no more cupons must go back there. The atmosphere is so astounding and creative

Had breakfast here today and not too bad. For the price maybe a little bit over priced. I got eggs with bacon on toast with a side of mushrooms, tomatoes and hash browns. Tomatoes were forgotten but the man brought them out. I enjoyed my breakfast. Coffee was average as it was not as hot as I would have liked it. Partner ordered the pancakes with a side of hashbrowns and bacon. He was glad he ordered the extra's as he thought his dish would have been quite small for what it was at $15 (without the bacon & hashbrowns). My advice would be to up the price on the dishes and provide better quality and more to the dish. The service by the two gentleman were outstanding.

Good service from our waiter. Would of prefered a bigger portion size for the main but overall the pork belly was very good. Would visit again to try the rest of the menu.

Cozy and busy little place, a shame the food can let itself down. I had the schnitzel with mash which unfortunately was dried, chewy and by no means freshly made. Disappointing for $20ish. Great beer though!
Ohhh Neil
Went with 2 other on the burger and beer deal. Had the fish burger and was awesome! Good size portions and really tasty, staff were very friendly even though it was very busy. Definitely would come again.

Went here for an easy Monday night dinner (used our entertainment book voucher) and was pleasantly surprised! The pizza was awesome, and the beef schnitzel with crispy wedges was really good! Would definitely recommend :)

Fantastic dine on Tuesday night, accompanied by 2 for 1 pizzas. The flat ordering 4 out of the 6 choices, all with great taste and very friendly staff to top it off.

Brew’D is a bar located in the south side of Wellington, in the Island bay district. It’s a cozy little bar with live music at night. It is quiet lively, unfortunetly the service here is not very good however the place does get pretty busy. The food here was decent and it’s an interesting place to hang out on a friday night.

So disappointing. The whole place had that bad cooking oil smell. The only saving grace was the decent sav blanc on tap - Allan Scott. For some reason the barman ruined my beer by putting fruit in it. Guys, that's a hangover from the 80s, please ask people if they want extras in their beer.

We had the fish & chips and the fish burger. In both cases, the fish was 70-80% oily batter, and the fish itself was about a quarter inedible brown muck. Our food was 'served' on what I can only call a wooden placemat - who knows how sanitary or tainted by meat juices it was. When the waitress asked us how we were enjoying our meals and we told her, the response was to just stand there looking at us - I had to eventually ask her to leave us alone!

My advice to the owners is to get rid of the oily smell / taste and the bad cook. Buy some crockery and teach your bar staff how to serve a drink without adulterating it.

I won't be going back and I advise everyone else to avoid it at all costs. I wish I had seen this site before going there.

Came in to get a couple of burgers. Read through the menu to find everything was extremely over priced, not even worth ordering. At least the Panhead was cold and fizzy. Sort your pricing out brew D rip off...

Waited almost an hour for the food which was cold and extremely basic on the taste scale. Hot chocolate was Luke warm and seemed to only fill a quarter on a small takeaway cup.
The girl serving us actually rolled her eyes when one in my party asked for a coffee.
Wouldn't recommend, never going back.
Decor was the best part.

I phoned to have the Pizza Tuesday 241 special as a takeaway. I was told a definite no. So I ordered one pizza at $22.90. It was the most tasteless, bland pizza I have tried. Very disappointing and a total waste of my time and money. Not good for Island Bay!

I'm a local and its great to have this bar in Island Bay. Staff try to be friendly but don't challenge or question anything - they don't like it. Where are the Wellington beers? $20+ for an very average burger - really? And a one-man karoke busker is not my idea of entertainment, especially in a pub full of locals who would like to chat.

Making an effort but could be oh so much better.
Second visit in 4 weeks, first for drinks then returning for an evening meal. Both visits left us impressed and glad Island Bay has a nice local now. Beer and wine selection good, with a reasonable selection, and food and service what we expected - quick and nice bar food. We preferred this to some of the city bars. Friendly staff, lovely ambiance. Hope to return to try the pizza soon. Would quite happily make this a regular weekend venue rather than always getting take aways.

We went to Brew'd on Saturday night. Limited selection for tea - but remembering I suppose that this was only a pub-style diner - not a restaurant, which was a shame.

Three of our group had cold food served on a cold plate which should have been hot food - two were burgers. The burgers were returned - the fish dish was edible. One returned burger had been raw in the middle (lamb), and had to be sent back a 2nd time for being still cold. This client had had an entree. She opted not to have the burger heated again and was told she wouldn't be charged ?!! She did have a dessert. Considering the difficulty in even getting a meal, this should have been a complimentary gesture. The 'salad' we were told was with the fish dish was a tomato slice sandwich - the side salad we eventually ordered was not $ value at all.

I talked to the cashier saying that we were from all over NZ and that we wouldn't be back and she just pulled a bit of a silly face and said 'ooh' like a kid. I had already indicated to her that my friend should have been given a complimentary dessert and she continued charging the bill - and really, I should have asked to speak to the manager.

We won't be back, sorry. The venue is nice - better appointed than when it was the Cheeky Pipi with far better facilities, but we did get sick of being called 'sweet' ...

We've only had wonderful experiences here. The staff are lovely and although the food is on the higher side, it's such a tasty treat, we are happy to spend the money. Proud of our new Island Bay local, we hope you stick around.

Decided to dine at Brew'd in Island Bay for lunch today. Found the menu had very limited options. There were three of us and we each tried a different burger. I had the beef burger - I found this to be very tasteless, my own home made burgers are far superior! My mother had a mint lamb burger - she was very disappointed that she could not taste any mint sauce or flavour at all. The third person with us had a chicken burger and also found this to be very bland and tasteless. The chips however were lovely and crunchy and the aioli was great that came with them! We found the burgers were very expensive - pleased that we didn't pay full price as luckily had a entertainment voucher. Wish I had of read the reviews before choosing to dine there.

Dropped in for a coffee today as the Bluebelle was closed for renovations. The coffee was ok but could have been hotter. It was a hot day though so that was OK. I love the decor in the place - it is completely transformed from what was there before. Also the staff were incredibly warm and friendly. I'm planning on going back to try the food.

I was frustrated for a couple reasons during my Brew'd experience, all the more reason to comment because Island Bay could use a decent pub/eatery!

My friend and I both got the beef burger, which was ok. Really thick patty, with average bread. It was passable but not great for $21! Also I asked for a garden salad instead of fries, the friendly waiter said she would ask if that was ok and promptly returned to say that it was NOT OK. The chef (see: lazy cook) said it was not an option. They obviously have enough greens, tomato etc in the kitchen to put something together but are far to useless/lazy to figure this out... weak!

The beers selection on tap is poor and over priced. It's called 'Brew'd' and they have no local Wellington beers (unless as guests..?), a couple of average Auckland mass brewed beers (Wild Buck + Boundary Beer at the cheapest price of $8.50), a Nelson beer, Asashi, Carlsberg and a Scott beer that was great, but should be at $12.50 a pint!

The logo declares "Your Shout" No kidding, a burger and a couple of beers cost us $40 each... and "Unashamedly your local"... hmmm I wouldn't claim it... unless you up your game I won't be back...

PS: Just some PR advice, it's not wise to respond to bad reviews by saying that you " read 5000 views a year and most are good"... seriously.

Decor inspired, especially the posters. The other Island Bay cafe was full, so friend and I ducked the rain for hot drinks at Brew'd across the road.
Disappointingly my coffee wasn't brewed. Cold and weak with most of it splashed in the saucer. I've had a lot of coffees in many different places and the one at Brew'd easily the worst.
As for my friend, needless to say it wasn't a hot chocolate.
Glad I didn't spend money on a meal.
A shame 'cos I liked the place. If I should go back my drink will come from a bottle.

We had dinner here last week very poor quality food, terrible burger, over cooked and dry, I would question if it was angus beef as stated on the menu. Pizza looked like they were pre-made/ frozen ones, such a shame that the owners think people are stupid enough to pay high prices for this rubbish, it's like they are on a mission to bring the standard of Wellington pub food back to the 80's, what's next a deep fried seafood basket with bought in tartare sauce?

We did not enjoy our meal. We advised the staff that we had been waiting for 15 mins to be served. The premises were half full, yep we were still waiting. Unfortunately the wait was not rewarded my burger was over priced and definitely not by a chef but a cook. It was slopped on my plate. And it didn't stop there hubbys eggs were rubbery and an insult to eggs. after our terrible experience we learned they are the same ownership as Gasworks in Miramar. If we had been aware we would not have given our hard earned money to them, Gasworks is awful. Sorry we wont be back neither will any of our friends.

We went for a quick meal after work. I was impressed with attentive service. The meal was what I expected. Prompt service, good meal, good selection of wines. I wasn't there to hang around but easily could have stayed longer. Excellent wee spot for Island Bay and a big improvement on what was there before.

Very good service. Simple menu but well cooked. Good atmosphere. A good addition to Island Bay's existing locales.

Sorry Brew'd not a great experience. Went for lunch just before midday today. 20 minutes for coffee, which was splashed into the saucer. 45 min wait for lunch (there were two of us and one other table of 3). My poached eggs had hard yolks. I had mushrooms and hashbrowns as extras. My guest had fish n chips. The fish was filleted very thinly and was chewy. The chips were soggy. Overall both meals lacked any kind of seasoning. Yes, we did give feedback to the waitress who offered other food off the menu. Total cost was $32. Such as shame as we have been waiting for a great cafe in Island Bay for such a long time.
