Review Japanese Thai - Wellington

Awesome service! Clean restaurant and flavorful food - but the Param Chicken is extremely sweet!! I suggest to get the sauce on the side.

Have gone Here for years such lovely kind staff and the food is always great!!

Absolutely love ordering from here and I know my family share in that view. The food is consistently good & the service is always warm & inviting. I have found that ever since covid and the increase in the cost of living, the standard of takeout food has dropped considerably. I understand the increase of cost but I will never understand why the standard of food has to fall. If anything it has really put me off eating out. It is becoming rare to find restaurants/ cafes that still make consistently good food! I highly recommend this restaurant! Keep up the great work!

This restaurant has been in this location in Porirua for decades, so it must be doing something right. Visited with a group of 10 to celebrate a birthday. Everyone enjoyed their meals, which were a majority Thai cuisine. We visited early on an otherwise quiet night. A steady flow of Takeaway traffic flows through.

Very cozy and clean. The owner is very friendly and she was very calm about our little boy who couldn't sit properly inside. The food was lovely and we will definitely go there again.

My family had a takeaway meal from Japanese Thai tonight. Everyone in my fussy family enjoyed the different dishes ordered.(they are a tough crowd to please sometimes :-) The meals were fantastic value for money, laden with veges and meat. The customer service was very friendly. I highly recommend this place to others.

This takeaway meal was delicious, it is far the best in Porirua. We are converted after a recommendation today

Ordered three items from takeaway menu on Mother’s Day. The dishes were bland and yuck. Usually the shrimp fried rice is sooo good. I asked for hot and there wasn’t any spice nor seasoning

Jap Thai is soo good if you have a big family like minee. Their portions are big and the food is delicious. I went a few months ago for my mums birthday and it was well worth the wait. We just shared all our plates because it was big enough to feed at least two people. My favourite of all was the Roti bread. OMG it is so so yumm. Overall we left so full and had take aways becuase there was still food left over. I highly reccomend this place for the value of your money. Staff was great and food was greater.

Lovely friendly staff. Tasty meals. We have enjoyed dining in and takeaway for many years. Happy to recommend them. Generous meals so you won't go hungry.

Decided to have a late dinner with an amazing friend at one of my favourite fusion restaurants in Porirua. As always, they delivered, although I had to go down to request for our choices as they were really busy. My dear friend loved their Appetizer combo and my Sushi and Sashimi special did not disappoint either. Friendly staff; very cordial proprietress (Beth) who usually gives me a good discount, having been a regular for ages (but that does not influence this review, mind you! haha!). If you want quality value for money food with excellent service and a nice, clean environment, look no further when you are in Porirua.

Japanese Thai Restaurant is a very hit or miss place with some of the dishes done extremely well and some that just should be taken off the menu.
First of all the portion sizes are huge. Whether you are getting takeaway or dining in you will definitely be getting value for money. You can ask for a range of spiciness from mild to hot (and hot really does mean hot) and they have an extensive range of items on their menu so even the fussiest eaters would find something here they may enjoy.
The Pad Thai and Teriyaki Salmon are really good and so are the Thai curries (my favourite has to be the Pangang Pork Curry - Hot). The Thai stirfrys are also alright and their Salmon Sashimi is a HUGE portion.
I would probably give their entrées a miss though as to be honest they are well below par. Their chicken satay was very dry and not flavourful although the peanut sauce was good. The Curry Puffs were also a bit of a let down. If dining in you will find that their wait staff have quite a bit of training needed when it comes to serving customers and answering questions that they have about the food on offer (eg. they didn't know how many Curry Puffs per order).
Ambiance is a bit poor also. Decor is dated and there was no one else dining in which made it feel a bit weird but the takeaway was busy.
This being said though Japanese Thai Restaurant is not a place you should necessarily avoid. I would recommend ordering the mains, especially for takeaway to enjoy at home in front of the tele after a hard days/weeks work.

I was part of a table of ten on Sat 13th Jan 2013.
I had booked online and was first visit.
Initially I thought the building's front looked very tired, but we were seated upstairs in a moderately sized dining room which was light and airy.
Everyone was in good spirits.
The staff were very friendly, and professional, but if I may point out a couple of things - it would be good to serve the ladies first. The waiter had a very good memory for who ordered what even with combined orders. I was impressed with that.
Our party had a combination of sushi/sushimi and Thai dishes.
We got exceptional amount of food for the price - of that I'm pleased. I couldn't eat all mine but others did.
The Sushi/sushimi was lovely - they used really fresh salmon and very generous. I do agree with the Japanese Chef, that the rice could have been more flavoured.

The thai was lovely the vegetables were tasty ... but I'd like to see less cooking of the meat ie: C1 - the chicken was rubbery and a little less sauce - sometimes less is more.

Overall a lovely experience and i heard comments from some in my party that it was the best sushi they have had, so guys - if you added a wee bit more of the vinegar to the rice. (which as a side point contains amino acids and helps with balancing our systems) I think your sushi would be sensational. The presentation was so lovely.

A better system in place when there are split orders would also speed up things at the counter.

We will be back. I've given 4 stars I'm hoping next year when we return I can give five stars.

I am a retired chef from Osaka, Japan. I had been catering Japanese cousine for 45 years. I visited this restaurant for dinner with friends. We tried sushi, sashimi and some Thai menus. I can't judge their Thai food because I don't know much about Thai food. But their Japanese Food was just horrible. It was definitely one of the worst Japanese food I have ever tried in my entire life. Rice used in sushi was too soft, not correctly seasoned, handled too much(bad texture), not hygienic(smells oil - perhaps chef handled fried food before making sushi and did not clean hand well. It can cause cross-contamination) and fish was not fresh (this is very serious, it can cause food poisoning as raw fish is used to make sushi). I had one bite of their sushi and left remaining untouched becuse it was not worth to try (worried about food poisoning). I can say that their Thai chef doesn't even know ABCs in Japanese food. I hope they change restaurant name to "Thai Restaurant" and do not sell any Japanese Food. ăƒŻăƒŒă‚čト

Great place, never had a bad meal in 15 years of dining here. We have had intimate dinner for two to family gatherings of up to 50 & never been disappointed. The owners are great, really helpful and go the extra mile to please. We have out of town family that visit & insist this is the place to dine & catch up. The prices are great value with a selection of food from babies to 90+. If you haven't tried it you must.

Dinner for 8 at 6:30pm - Meals were served swiftly and to everyone at the same time - the A6 was a bit oily but still tasty - everyone enjoyed their meals and there was plenty to fill everyone up. The staff were friendly and made the night enjoyable - Recommend

The decor is great the staff very friendly and surprisingly to me, the place filled with seemingly happy diners.
The menu is a bit limited but reasonably cheap and cheerful eg the red and green curries we ordered were $15 each. The bad news is both these curries were insipid, bland and perhaps the worst I have encountered. How hard is it to make a green or red curry? Both dishes smelt unpleasant on arrival (perhaps overdone fish sauce/bamboo? and looked very watery. The red curry was simply bits of roughly cut schnitzel swimming in a watery grey soup with obviously frozen peas and beans. Both dishes were flavourless. Both had stalks of lemon grass. There was no coriander garnish, no sign of a kaffir lime leave, no basil. It was cheap. It was edible, but some establishments (eg Satay Kingdom in Cuba Street) can bang out a very flavoursome mee goreng or Laksa for sub $10. I would not return, which is a shame as a pleasant location, pleasant staff and decor. maybe the "chef" is Japanese, and cooks great Japanese. But Thai? ( and I have eaten at a few) definitely look elsewhere.

Very disappointed with our visit to this restaurant. It was recommended and we had been warned about the basic, tacky decor which was as described. The staff can't be faulted on how friendly and welcoming they are and the speed of the service was very good. Two of the dishes that contained pastry were undercooked and chewy. The curry was supposed to have seasonal vegetables in but appeared to have supermarket frozen vegetables in and very little meat. One had only 7 thin cut slithers of meat swimming in a bowl of curry which could have been mistaken for it's canned cousin from the supermarket. The taste was pleasant enough but we didn't consider the dishes value for money at around $18 each. No steamed items on the menu, other than the rice, and very few Japanese dishes. However the Teriyaki Chicken was excellent and the other main was adequately tasty. Won't be going back I'm afraid.

To me this is the best Thai in the Wellington region - lovely Tom Yum and good curries. Very well priced and the staff are just lovely.

I go as often as I can - I live in Wgtn City but the trip is worth it.. I have taken everyone I know and they enjoy it too!

Food was good, the decor is simple. They mucked up the booking so we ate downstairs which was rather sterile and busy with takeaway diners, but good food for the $, would definately return, and looks to be pretty kid friendly as well.

Went there last night and they were SO accomodating. We brought our 15month old and everyone was very helpful in seating us, getting her a highchair. They were amazed that she liked thai food, and everyone came upstairs to visit.
The food was good, not 'designer' Thai, just simple fare, but the Pad thai was great. It's not the freshest most amazing Thai food ever, but the price is right, the service was LOVELY, and the atmosphere nice. We'll be back again!

A simple restaurant but reasonably priced and a quick efficient service. I'm a regular at this place, the food is great and my kids love it.

Great staff, really fast helpful and they understand what you are saying, a good range of nice food at good prices. Curries or japanese and a few western meals. Sit upstairs for a good view outside, nice on a wet winter night eating good food and looking out at the rain.
Been there a number of times and always enjoyed it.
