Review Lamason Brew Bar - Wellington

Pat Satji
Came here on a recommendation from a mate. No idea what to expect but this is a great spot. The baristas are friendly and greet their locals as they enter, there's cool coffee equipment too. I got a watercress scone (usually a cheese scone kinda guy) and was amazed. Crumbly and fluffy in a good way. They recommended it toasted with butter. It was slightly sweet too. Please come here!

One of the best cafe in town 🙌 tried the Ethiopian Guji in siphon and in love with it! Staffs are amazing, energetic and welcoming! Great place to hang out with the lovely ambience. Definitely will come back

It was my first time to visit Welly and I immediately headed down to what I’ve heard is one of the best cafes in the city... and I wasn’t disappointed! Amazing coconut flat white, delicious bacon and egg toastie, friendly baristas, quick service—such a great first impression of #windyWelly 😊

cosy little cafe hidden in CBD, love sitting at the bar watching siphon making ! Staffs are very professional and introduce beans from different region. Great spot to chill with tasty siphon coffee in town.

Some like to say that you never grow old if you manage to learn something new every day. A lesson for today is the black magic of coffee making with a help of siphon bulbs. Guatemalan bean did it for me, now I am believer. Cool vibe and friendly staff complement the perfect coffee.

A great place to chill out or catch up with friends over a high quality coffee.. a variety of blends and single-originals to choose from. If you’ve never had siphon coffee and wanted to try, then this is the place for it. Make sure you spend a moment to enjoy it though!

In my humble opinion, this is easily the top 3 coffee shops in town though the barista claims to be the best ! A true barista experience with very friendly service. It’s one of those coffee shops where the baristas know the name of the regular customers 🙌. Had the siphon coffee and it was a very clean cup of coffee. They use People’s coffee beans and would recommend trying their filter coffee as there are more selection of beans.

First place I’ve been to that does siphon coffee as a standard option! Definitely the most reasonably priced siphon I’ve had as well. The staff know their stuff when it comes to coffee and can recommend the choice of bean for your coffee. Great spot to chill out and enjoy a quality brew.

Great coffee with espresso and soft brew options (syphon and v60) as well as cold drip. The best scones in town and the friendliest team n town. They're great.

Awful coffee! Far better places to get a good brew in welly, I find lamasons are never consistent with their coffees. Very weak and milky. The single redeeming feature is their pinwheel scones, which when served with hot sauce is unbeatable. However a cafe that serves terrible coffee, I just can’t recommend.

I had a really great brunch at the Lamason Brew Bar this morning, everything we ordered had intricate mixes of flavour which forced you to slow down and enjoy the experience. I had a mocha and the toastie of the day, and my friend had a cold brew coffee and a brownie. Before we were even at the table, the brownie had already arrived. The toastie was also potentially the most flavoursome toastie I've ever had. 10/10 will be back!

Has a syphon and tea this morning. Syphon was very good.

I miss Dave and the crew! The best coffee experience in Wellington... Loads of parking space available too! ;)

Coffee is an artcraft in Wellington so it's not hard to find a good standard of Coffee. What sets Lamasons apart is its warm friendly, professional staff, combined with there in-depth knowledge of coffee and its process from birth to cup.

I have Private messaged you.

Very nice siphon coffee

Want a non-snobby but snobbily good cup of coffee? Head to Lamason.

I didnt know it existed having worked out of the cbd for over a year.... but I'm glad I know of it now!

Good coffee, not bitter, good temperature, strong but not too strong, good service too.

Will be back.

You could easily pass by Lamason without noticing. I almost past by Lombard Street from Victoria Street. Lamason would be pretty incnospicuous from Lombard as well, except there is not much else on the street. Lamason is a small coffee lab run by two young bearded - AKA hipster - coffee guys. Toastie and carbonated juice was a small lunch but lasted me a full hour. The bread was toasted to perfection. Free wifi helped to keep me there, of course.

I just love the atmosphere! The staff all have a lively vibrant energy - enough to perk you up even before you've ordered! Great place to perch and sip on some good ol' bean juice. Sweet tunes lads, I'll be back again soon ✌

Hands down my favorite little cafe in Wellington. I normally never drink coffee here in NZ (I prefer Vietnamese) but the coffee here is so good I drink it as it is wo sugar and milk. Its quite small and hidden away but thats the beauty of it because it never gets too crowded. Staff are so friendly. The toasties are always good too!

Came here on friends recommendation for good coffee and their specialty Siphon.
Firstly, loved the rustic hipster atmosphere of the cafe, hidden away in a side street.
Staff were friendly and gave good recommendation on different types of coffee bean suite to my taste. The only downside is I wanted to have more and more!

Fantastic little hideaway, one of the places you have to know about to find, but well worth searching for it. Fantastic single origin syphon coffee from people's, always well brewed. These people are passionate about their coffee and service and it shows. A must visit.

Fantastic little cafe, hidden from the main stretch. Though you don't need to search far/hard to find it. The guys that work here are very friendly and hip (subjective), not sure whether this is positive :)

They're the only place that does espresso, filtered coffee, cold drip (warm seasons only), syphoned, cold brew (I'm tempted to call it deconstructed coffee)

My choice is usually the syphoned, because I can't get it anywhere else in Wellington! Please let me know otherwise? Cold drip is my other choice. Espresso is fairly standard 'peoples coffee', which is served by many places in Wellington.

Note, current there's construction work opposite so it might be a bit dusty and loud, should you chose to site outside.

OK this has got to be the best coffee we've found this weekend and we've tried a few. We came here on a reccomedation from a guy in Hamilton and were not disappointed. The coffee had great flavour.. the milk great micro foam. We ordered a lemon friand as well which complemented the coffee nicely without being too sweet. The place is modern but practical with friendly staff who are obviously passionate about coffee. Love the other coffee brewing options on offer. Overall well done guys pity it's such a long drive for us to be regulars.

Not sure I didn't give this joint a 5.0
Impossible to find without being told to come here.zomato told me to come here!
Great spot
AMAZINGLY OUTSTANDING COFFEE.
Miss this coffee stop at your peril!
Petra Pearce
Amazing coffee - best I've had in ages. And I love that they put the savoury muffin (also delicious) in a toastie machine rather than in the microwave! Great friendly baristas too :)

Lamason is one of the few real citadels of coffee in Wellington. But can they make a cup of tea? This was my 14th stop, after Hangar, in search of a decent cup. (Rationale and explanation in my Astoria review)

Asking for tea at Lamason would be like trying to buy a sex toy in Kirkaldie and Stains. But, summoning up the straightest face I could, I asked for tea - “Bud its just a bag tea!” the guy behind the counter said – clearly wondering whether his grasp on reality was faltering. "No problem" I replied.

Lamason is an interesting place, so far off the beaten track that it has to be found by accident or searched for. Under a car park, down a lane, its interior reflects the use of the building - concrete ceiling, concrete floors, relieved by a wooden counter. They advertised toasties and displayed lemon curd friands, muffins and a range of caffeine generating equipment. They had five different beans that could be passed through a V60 filter or siphon and clearly the devotion to molecular caffology was intense.

Five minutes later the English Breakfast Tea arrived (they got distracted by more sane folk who’d ordered coffee).

A small stainless jug enclosed the tea and a single tea bag. A warm cup and cold milk. I waited a few minutes and poured. A reasonable slightly pale colour, a sippable temperature. No astringency, pleasant, a hint of flavour. It seemed a reasonable tea bag tea. I then had to ask what tea bag it was - “Twinings" said another dude driving the San Marco, with a slight smile on his face. “Not bad" I said… trying to control the corners of my mouth.

So for the tea:

1. Specialist tea offerings (the variety of unflavoured teas): 1/5
2. Brew temperature (the likelihood that the tea was brewed with boiling water): 5/5
3. Cup temperature (how much of a heat sink was the cup – a thick, cold pottery cup scores 0, a warm thin china cup scores 5): 2/5
4. Milk requirements (was I asked about milk and what type of milk): 0/5
5. Strength (too weak or strong =0, just right = 5): 2/5
6. Taste (bad=0, excellent=5): 2/5

Lamason’s Total 12/30

Scoreboard:
Soho Brown : 8/30 (Harney’s – sachet)
Sweet Bakery and Cakery : 9/30 (Harney’s – sachet)
Bon Gusto : 10/30 (Twinings – tea bag)
Bellagio : 11/30 (Twinings – tea bag)
K and S Cafe : 11/30 (Harney’s – Satchet)
Astoria : 11/30 (Enzo – loose leaf)
Rosina’s : 11/30 (Bell - tea bag)
Hangar : 11/30 (t-Leaf – loose leaf)
Lamason : 12/30 (Twinings – tea bag)
Ombra : 13/30 (Chai Ui – loose leaf)
Hey George 16/30 (Stash – tea bag)
Chocolate Frog : 17/30 (t-Leaf – loose leaf)
The Little Tea Shop : 18/30 (Tea-Total - loose leaf)
Louis Sargeant : 19/30 (?Harney’s – loose leaf in large sachet)

PS: My review score is not for the tea but my experience with the coffee.

Next stop Clarke’s in the library.

One of the best coffees I've had, also one of the only places in Wellington to get syphon coffee which by the way is definitely something that should be tried even if you're not a huge coffee fan, the whole experience is rather exciting. Watching how it's made.
James Ford
These guys hold it down on the coffee front, plus they have good chat. Tait the barista is a good lad and can do a hell of a coffee for a young gun, shot for the yarn yesterday guys made my day.

Looking for smooth nice & strong velvety coffee? Look no further. I'll be back for a toastie 😄
Vivian
Walked past and this dainty café caught my eye. Went in and the staff were down to earth and very friendly. They made us some awesome coffees and gave me the best toastie I've ever had :)
Ryan Thornley
Sick as toasties and a rad smokers area.
10/10 would bang.
Hot sauce was cool.
Flanders sucks Flanders sucks Flanders sucks Flanders sucks

Cool, quaint cafe that is a bit hidden but it adds to its charm.

The idea of having a full syphon bar is awesome. Tedious for the baristas, I'm sure but great for the customers. Syphon's in itself are hard to come by and aren't always offered so it's cool that they decided to do a full bar.

They carry People's Coffee. Their coffee is good, nothing too exciting but generally tasty. The guys that work here are also friendly and cool and they serve toasties and six barrel soda as well. They keep things simple but they do it well.
Rucky
Good one. Came across these guys on my coffee travels, really enjoyed the house blend through milk, rich, full flavoured and well made.
The toasted savoury muffin was a delicious bonus :)

Best coffee in town! Knowledgeable baristas, beautiful coffee every time, toasted sandwiches are delicious. Great place to go for a siphon coffee too:)
Mind The Crumbs
Love this little place the only negative is that it's closed on Sunday and isn't closer to my work!
If you're after something a little different these guys do siphon brew, it’s awesome to watch them make. They brew it all right in front of you… It’s like a science and make sure a very light flavoursome coffee.

They, of course also make an amazing espresso coffee here, as well 100% consistent. You can tell these guys know their coffee.

Went to Lamasons two years ago for a syphon. They screwed it up, bottom rose up, overcooked, and with no apology served it to us. They never bothered to remake it and it tasted terrible. Went back to give them a second go last monday at 9:30.Were told that there would be a 30min wait. We assumed that things must have improved and there was a quite a queue ahead of us. Decided to wait, after 35 min got our money back and left. It turned out that there was no queue ahead of us, they just chose to serve people ordering latte and toasties for people who ordered after us. Again no apology for poor service. This was the rudest service I have ever received.Espresso workshop in Auckland can cope with making syphon and pour-overs even over busy lunch time, so maybe it was because at 40+ we were not in their preferred market demographics. Is this type of what the over forty's can expect from Wellingtons trendy cafes?Where do you go to get good service in Wellington?
Leah Hamilton
I love this place. The staff are friendly and helpful, and are always willing to explain how any of the cool coffee-making apparatuses work. The coffee is delicious, and you can pretty much order anything that you can think of. They also have amazing cheese scones.

It's not for nothing that Lamason is much-loved by its regulars. Although I hesitate to use the word "institution" (it's such a frumpy word when applied to a place as cool as Lamason) this place IS an institution. Of all places in the Welly cbd where coffee is the focus (and there are a few outstanding ones), this one somehow stands out among its peers. The genuineness, affability and expertise of Dave and his always goodhearted and conscientious staff make this a place worth visiting at any time of day. Siphon or espresso, the coffee is beautiful.
Aidan
Fantasic cafe. Dave was super-friendly. Spent a good ten minutes chatting me. The flat white was awesome, really enjoyed the strong, yet balanced briskness of the espresso. Love that they use pure, organic milk and fair-trade coffee.

My favourite place for coffee in ALL OF WELLINGTON.

You never have to play the "who's on the machine?" game here. The coffee is consistently good no matter who makes it.

No hipster pretentiousness here -- the staff are more than happy to explain coffee bean or apparatus to you.

It might seem a bit intimidating with the lack of a menu, but that's because they'll make you anything you want.
Andrew Imms
Fantastic fair trade coffee. The guys there are really friendly and it's a neat little place. Cheese scones toasted and buttered are to die for. Note: not a food place - it's primarily a coffee place where if you ask for something weird e.g trim piccolo they know how to make it.
Christie S
I've never seen anyone make unpressurized coffee (Siphon) like these guys before.
Beautiful shop.
Nice food.
Great coffee!!
I will be back.
