Review Black Coffee - Wellington

Emily Fitzgerald
The only reason I’m giving this space 4/5 stars is because I wish there was a variety in drink sizes. My partner and I ordered flat whites today and they were well made. I appreciate that they offer decaf as an option. Our baristas were kind and I love the grungy atmosphere/decor. We spent ~$12.

Black coffee is the best coffee shop in Wellington. Amazing coffee every visit, gluten free options, dog friendly and a wide variety of music to set the vibe. All staff I have encountered give thoughtful and warm service. This is a must visit destination.

Best soy milk coffee I’ve had. It was perfectly steamed. I could not tell the difference between the creaminess of the soy milk compared to regular milk. Excellent experience. Thanks 😊

Came here during the Newtown Festival. It was packed! But that didn’t lower the quality or service. The kids enjoyed their spiders and my latte was great. Recommended.
Alex Marshall

Great local atmosphere here & fresh art for sale on display. A little on the pricey side - a flat white, large soy latte & a brownie came to $19. Was made up for by the presence of a gorgeous white wolf like dog which was awesome to pat. Fully recommend a coffee, a at & a chat 🤗🐺🍰☕️🫖🖼

Pretty awesome place. Tasty coffee, and TASTY toasted sandwiches with gluten free and vegan cheese options.

When you see “tradies” reading the paper next to people working on laptops you know the coffee is good and the food is too. Enjoy the toasties (gluten free available) and if you don’t drink coffee, (I don’t) the lemon, ginger and honey (with cloves added) is delicious. But almost best of all; a pinball machine!!!

Didn't eat only coffee, but good coffee and good service

Lovely coffee, but the top price scone was forgotten and left in the press for so long it was impressively hard. There was a nice apology on delivery, but the waiter really must have known it was not fit to serve. A requested replacement was so lightly toasted it had cold areas. I felt unable to complain again.

Favourite place in welly to get coffee, bottomless filter and the yummiest vegan toastie. Caramel & the team are so warm & welcoming, always so happy to see you. There’s no where I’d rather spend my mornings

Love this cafe, especially with the owners charm and skills. Always been an interesting place with it's diverse offerings, and I feel comfortable there. Sometimes the tables are awkward but this can enhance the alt art feel. I dunno, anything works there.

Have watched this space transform steadily over the past years, always the most friendly service, the coffee, sweet treats and environment great. Heading back in this week for the new toastie menu

I have just started using dairy alternatives but haven't been successful in my search for a decent dairy free flat white until yesterday! The barista was so knowledgeable and helpful, and I was able to enjoy a rice milk flat white without any issues! Thank you so much, and I'll be back again soon!

always pretty awesome, great service and nice staff, and the coffee is excellent! an added bonus is that the space doubles as a low key art gallery, featuring interesting and well-priced work. a decent spot in Newtown :)

Good strong cuppa coffee, rad fit out, very friendly service and lots of stuff to look at. Probably one of the most decent cups of coffee in Newtown. Highly recommend would visit again A+++++ :)

HELL YEAH!! stopped in today for a couple of coffees and this is one cool wee place! A mix of black and white decor, period carrara ceiling that is peeling in places, some of the funkiest artwork I have seen in a long time, Pinball machines and street fighter!!! The service is great, friendly and helpful and the coffee is goooood... Triple shot in the large but not bitter and was pretty strong.....mmmm... Came with a jaffa on top! Ha ha. .. Before you think it's too funky to visit a family with a baby popped in and a little old lady popped in for an ice cream and a sit down. Awesome. Real cool place.

AMBIANCE: Keeping in mind that it's Newtown.. This place has a rawness to it, a gritty, dark and derelict first impression. There's deathly art on the walls and it's terribly lit and kind of makes you want to leave. But you're tractor-beamed to the counter by the potent Havana fumes altering your mind. Along this journey you pass pinball machines and a lot of really cool art that is rotated monthly.
SERVICE: After that dark journey it's a confusing thing to be served by such friendly people. Without a single 'black coffee' in our order all were still happy to see us.
COFFEE: This place was started by a Jon Dimery who worked at Deluxe in the city for a few years, and let me tell you, they KNOW how to make good coffee. Dimery brought Havana with him from Deluxe and are currently the only people in Newtown using Havana beans (do I have to keep saying they're my favourite?)
FOOD: Often supplied by Moon up the road, with a few other baked goods in there too. Top notch for a snack.
PRICE: On par with what you get.

OVERALL: Become a regular here and you'll be well rewarded (and have terribly high standards in coffee, making you just impossible anywhere else on the country).

I don't quite know what it is but I like this little place. It's a bit like people's round the corner, but with pinball machines, art, peeling ceiling, cool music and a degree of controlled grunge.
Pics on the walls suggest music as a theme maybe.
I ordered a trim cap from the lovely, very friendly girl behind the espresso machine, as well as a "bliss ball". Sipping the coffee (Havana) and biting into the bliss ball, I flicked through "radioactive man". The coffee had been textured perfectly, initially a slight bitterness that seemed to dissipate. The bliss ball was one of those compressed nut and dried fruit concoctions but rather that sweet and sickly I was surprised by a sharp citrusy tang - it was good.

A good little cafe - it's newtown not ponsonby and maybe that's it's charm.

Let's see, coffee, pinball machines, good music, bits of art....

what's not to like??

Pretty cool little cafe, good vibes, did I mention pinball machines, FTW!
