Review Red Hill - Wellington

K “Game of life girl”
Who knew you could karaoke and eat Chinese at once. Only negative is they don't like you dancing on the tables. A must do experience. Food is great too.

The hot pot experience is so awesome, I find myself craving it. I love that I get to pick the ingredients from the menu to create my own dish, and the experience of cooking the hot pot really adds to the vibe. It's definitely a child friendly restaurant, and there's often large family groups enjoying the food. It can get pretty loud in there, so if you have sensory issues, I would suggest picking a quieter time to visit. The overall vibe is very casual and unpretentious, though, and it's definitely worth the experience to go at least once.

The food is great and the atmosphere once the karaoke starts is amazing! The only issue with us was that one person in our group specifically ordered a gluten free dish. They mistakenly gave her another dish, and then when her (GF) dish was out they said "Oh, this is the Gluten Free not that one you're eating". It's not great if you have an intolerance or allergy. Thankfully, my friend was okay :)

Good hotpot, mala was spicy and mushroom base was tasty. Sweet potato noodles are so good. However weekend night was insanely loud with rowdy people throwing things and slightly rude (drunk) diners. But overall food was great.

What a place. Really depends on the might you go. Friends and I went out on a Friday, and around 8, two big groups came in. When it got more dark, the dicso ball was spinning and karokoe being played. First time here and a rxpericne to remember. Hot pot was great, $45 per person, and basically all you can eat for 2 hours. Staff were efficient and reasonably fast.

Very yummy hot pot place to go to with friends and family for all you can eat for two hours👍

Went in for a hotpot and it was as expected with a Chinese hotpot. Let down as there is no chicken in the list of items. Beef, fish, shrimps, tofu, mushrooms and a few regular items were good as usual. The soup base of hot and sour and chicken were perfect. Also a bit pricey for $48 per person. At this price, they could have added a BBQ grill as well then it would be better.

The place is not too big but clean. Love their fish fillet in spicy oil! The amount of food is enough for two and the flavor is good! It's not that spicy but has an authentic taste of chilli peppers. We also had chicken salad which has the best sauce of sweetness and a hint of mint. Will come again to try other dishes.

I had a good time and it is a unique experience. Note: they have a big sign offering $5 off for a five star google review, so that may have bumped up the overall rating.

Well well, amazing the food is exquisite and tastes amazing. They give you a pot with water, for spices and non spices, then you order what you would like... After that they bring it to you raw but that’s not just it, they let you cook it yourself. With tones of food on the menu very creative ways to cook it. They have great service with some nice kind staff. I would definitely recommend coming to this restaurant for very flavoursome food.

Good place for hotpot in Wellington. They have a big selection of meats, veggies and carbs to choose from. will definitely be back

Fast service. Only thing was meat was frozen so was hard to pull lamb and beef to separate peices as it would just break apart but didn't effect the taste. Cheap drinks, no alcohol. Beautiful sauces. Great proportions, extremely filling, great pricing and worth the money. Highly recommend. We had demolished most of the food by the time I made the review 😂 I found it on Tiktok, well worth it. I'm posting a video on TIKTOK if you want to see a full review. Or search up Redhill Hotpot Wellington @rickileemayhayman

My late birthday and the food was delicious

Perfect combination of hotpot and karaoke at the same time. I've enjoyed a lot!!!! Singing songs from my teenage years and having a very well balanced hotpot. Young environment. If you want a quiet place, this is not for you ;) You don't know if the floor is shaking because of the people, or because of an earthquake 😅 You pay a fixed price, very convenient

all you can eat hotpot! really loved the food here. will definitely be back

Highly recommended! Had a really nice dinner at Red Hill! The staff is very attentive and friendly. The food tastes wonderful and the price is reasonable. I am gradually working my way to try all the food in the dinner menu but I really enjoyed the hot pot and most of the foods in the dinner menu, especially the tender fish fillets in hot chili oil. I can say if you appreciate good Chinese food you should visit this little gem.

Great food, great staff and great environment! Couldn't ask for better

If you're looking for a nice dinner look elsewhere. Not an insult at all but a warning. This place is the best BYO I've ever been to. For uni students/whatever it is brilliant. Been to byos in Wellington, Dunedin and auckland but this is easily the best. Bringing out the karaoke at 9.30 is a stroke of genius. The foods good and reasonable, as is corkage. All I can say is that we had a reservation at 7.30, it's now 11 and it's still pumping.

fantastic Chinese food, good service. i favorite like hot pot.

We had a group of 20. The service was fast and efficient. Staff very professional. The food was top class and the prices are very reasonable. Loved the entertainment. I felt like I was at a concert and had a blast. Definately booking to go back there.
Mark Hing
I highly recommend this place. The food is divine and very reasonably priced. The service is professional but friendly.

Great range of hot pot choices, excellent for winter and gatherings. Ingredients have room to be more fresh

Delicate food and excellent service, especially the Asian guy waiter, really patient and responsible, give us many useful suggestions. Will be back!!

Atmosphere was good but the food was absolutely horrendous. I ordered the deep fried chicken breast with some kind of chilli dipping sauce. Firstly the chilli sauce was just a mouthful of oil, Secondly the ‘chicken breast’ was dark as well as undercooked. I notified the staff who were understanding of the situation. However, they kept insisting that it was chicken breast - which it definitely was not. We had a chef at the table and even she agreed that it was definitely not breast meat. Fortunately the staff offered to cancel my order.

I gave this place a lower rating earlier on google maps but after going to other hot pot places in New Zealand I felt like I underrated this place. The prices are amazing and the portions are very generous. You get a real Chinese hot pot experience so totally recommended. Try to avoid busy nights ( like weekends and public holidays)

I’ve not been in to the restaurant but it’s definitely one of the best places on uber eats! Great value for money - the chicken fried rice and pork dumplings are must-haves.

Went with a group of friends for the hotpot, the taste is quite good, and the quality seems good too. $28 per person worths the value. Will go there again.

I visited Red Hill for a lunch date with a friend about a month ago.

I ordered the chicken black pepper hot plate and my friend ordered an egg meal. He got his meal quickly and I waited an extra 10 minutes for mine.
When I got mine I noticed that it wasn’t chicken in my hot plate it was beef (I don’t eat beef)

So I took it back and the guy was adamant that I ordered a beef hot plate. But he took it back to the kitchen and 5 mins later he came out with a chicken hot plate.

As I got through my meal I noticed bits of beef in the gravy at the bottom. I was totally put off, and I just cannot believe that I was served the same dish but they just picked out the beef. NOT ACCEPTABLE!
Definitely recommend this place for a BYO and a good night of Karaoke and drinks if you wanted to carry on after dinner. The food and experience is good value for money. The let down was the bad customer service we received.

This place is underrated. Discovered this through Uber eats. And what a great find.

The sliced pork belly is tender and spicy, eggplant was tender and spicy and loved the sticky spicy with a hint of sweet chilli sauce.

Fried tofu was so yum as well!!! Crispy outside , spicy-tangy sauce and the cucumber brings a balance and freshness to each bite.

The beef brisket was tender as well. The soup had a hint of shiitake mushroom flavour. Noodles was ok, could be better.

The restaurant itself in terms of cleanliness was average. Which is why i give it a rating of four stars. Staff was great, friendly, accomodating.

This is a restaurant i would recommend to those wanting to have a good chinese meal in Wellington. Flavourful in every bite. Overlooked as restaurant is on second floor and not visible from the street

Chinese dine-in. The environment is small, and the seating arrangements were cramped and noisy. There is likely to be close to 100 items on the menu, which (for me) is overwhelming and confusing, but also nothing really jumped out at me. Chicken fried noodles was okay, not a lot of flavour but tasty enough. My friend got the crispy pork which was lovely and juicy. Booking conditions are tedious e.g. must spend at least $15 excluding corkage, and a charge if 10% of your booked group does not arrive. Great system for taking orders with names, making for an easy hassle free payment to end the night.
Nikita Rawnsley-Wratt
The food here is really average! I was shocked at how the staff reacted to simple things like 'can I have chol sticks' or 'what time will karaoke start'. The we so uninterested and a bit rude. I would probably go back to red mount instead next time.

I have been coming to this awesome outlet since 2012, it’s gone through it’s fair share of management changes , I reckon 3-4 but what happened today just blew my mind. There stands a lady right at the entrance of the outlet with a horrible body language , no smile , made us feel unwelcome even before we said hello. The first word - any reservation , we said no, and she stood there jsut gazing at us , almost wanting us to turn back ...a guy dude tried to come to rescue the situation (but she still remained cold and absolutely rude ), but too late . They have lost a patron ... I am never going back again

Great food ! Chicken fried rice! Highly recommended, and they have large range of selection of food , the service very friendly as well! 😊😀😃😄😁

I know it's not a place to expect world class customer service here so what I wanted from this place is real Chinese hot pot with a reasonable price. This was what I got on the night. For $28 per person you get unlimited selection of meat, seafood and vegetables and they were all good quality in my opinion. The place was efficient with a nice lively Chinese crowd. I will definitely revisit on a cold welly night.

My friends booked a table of 4 on a Friday night and we went there for hot pot after work. By the time we arrived we were told our table can only be reserved till 7.30pm. We waited for the hot pot to be served till around 6.30pm. Staff kept reminding us of the timing since 7.20pm so we had to leave without finishing our meal! I would say the flavour of the hot pot was authentic but the dining experience was terrible. Might go on a quiet day after work but definitely not Friday again!

Reasonably priced lunches, good food, and the best orange beef in wellington. Have been at least a dozen times or more and they never fail to disappoint. The second story window booths are great to sit in at lunch time with a nice view of the park. I do wish they put more effort into keeping the place warm in winter though!
I Love Food
Really fun for a byo with karaoke! Can have really large groups. Quite pricey though - most meals are at least $18 and then corkage on top of that. Would recommend the dumplings and spring rolls!
Jimmy
The best Chinese BYO restaurant in town, I have been there on Saturday, was really nice food, great atmosphere, I really enjoyed with my friends there, great service, well management, staff were look after all the customer in the restaurant, was awesome experience! Will be back :)

If you're looking for a great place to take a group for a BYO - Look no further than Red Hill on Manners Street, Wellington Central.

If you once dreamed of being Britney Spears or in a boy band then you may potentially never want to leave this joint.

You have to book, because the place isn't huge and you'll understand why when you arrive. It is stock standard asian food, and in my opinion, you definitely wouldn't even really go there for the quality of the food, but more the experience and quality this place sets for your night.

Everyone must order off the menu - the place typically attracts big bunches and if you are accompanied by a BYO wine, or in my case 3 bottles then they make sure you're also lining those stomachs!

At around 10pm once you've received your food and downed some of your liquid courage, a few microphones get passed around, the lights dim and a huge screen drops down. KARAOKE BAR!!!

There's a huge selection of songs which range from old tunes you used to love when you were 9, to current top 40 music.
This place gets intense. Dance and singing battles, almost scraps as to whose choosing the next song, and let's not forget the war for the microphone, but all that aside even if you don't have the microphone it's a great time singing and bonding with all the people in the restaurant to your old childhood songs.

Again, if you want to be entertained, you want to set a standard for a rowdy night and you have friends that you maybe want to see let loose, then look no further. There is nothing like a little wine and a little nostalgia to start the night off well.

Order the dumplings. They're great.

Went to Red Hill on a Friday night for a work byo. The place was packed, mostly with loud students. As a vegetarian, I found the menu rather lacking in choices but settled on the vegetarian spring rolls and a chefs special which was an egg plant dish. The wait for mains was long. When they did finally arrive, I found my meal flavorsome tho others at the table couldn't agree.
We asked for water for a table of 11 and were brought one bottle and two glasses. We had to constantly ask for refills.
A friend said that it wasn't normally like this on the quieter weekdays and she enjoyed it at those times.

Staff refused to put the karaoke on and were rude. Would not eat there but for the karaoke! This was a very disappointing experience, would not recommend.

I went to Red Hill with a large group for a friends birthday. Not only were the staff incredibly rude, but they made us all look at the menu, order, and pay for our food before we could sit down. This process took about 45 mins, as we were a large group. Additionally, we were very forcibly pushed to take the $25 set menu, which I profusely refused because it did not cater for vegetarians. Those that did take the set menu, had to all sit at the same table, rather than the friends they arrived with.

I ordered a tofu chili dish, and a tofu with black fungus dish, which were extremely disappointing. Both were very plain, and there were hardly any vegetables in it. Just a mountain of tofu.

I do not recommend this restaurant, nor do I have any interest in going back.

Woohoo if you want to party on a Friday or Saturday night, definitely head to redhill. Such great vibes, good food, standard prices, BYO and close to town. Everything you need for a good night out.
I will comment that they have pretty strict rules if you want to dine with them. For example you must order at least $15 of food for each person who wants to byo. But they tell you these in advance so you have time to rearrange your night if you don't agree.
Overall I would say its a tightly run ship but it's an awesome time as long as you stick to the rules!

Went here for my birthday dinner and overall it was great. We were a group of 20 so as expected the food came out as it was ready not all at once but everyone shared as it came out so that was no problem. Everything I ordered was great, from the dumplings to the salt and pepper squid. Only negative comment my friend across from me also got the squid and while mine was beautiful hers was over cooked. I did not realise this was a karaoke restaurant until it came on it was an awesome atmosphere everyone had a great time.

A group of us went for Hot Pot at this restaurant and overall it wasn't a pleasant experience for $25.00 per head.

Firstly, when we got seated the waiter/waitress took an unusual amount of time getting our order menu's. This was despite the restaurant not being busy at all. Only 2 other tables of 2-3 people were occupied.

Secondly, none of the staff asked if we wanted something to drink. Would have been nicer to ask earlier on, found this a bit strange. It wasn't until we had started eating they asked.

Thirdly, not ALL of our ordered items on the menu arrived... when asked for an explanation, the waitress just seemed puzzled. No explanation was given. This was the most frustrating part.

Fourthly, given it was all you can eat we re-ordered items on the menu. Once again, the time we had to wait was unusually long given that it wasn't busy at all.

The total time we were there was about 2 hours. All of us left feeling disappointed and not full. I can safely say that I won't be visiting this place again.

So impressed with this place! We were part of a 20 person party and they were so helpful. The food was absolutely delicious, the cumin calamari was perfectly cooked and had just the right level of spice. They didn't miss a single person or mess up any order which often happens in large parties. They also managed to get entrees and main meals out within an hour. The karaoke and great service made it a perfect place for a large dinner party. Would definitely recommend.

Went 16/2/2013. Very impressed with the extensive menu. Had a deal voucher $49 and I must say it was well worth the money by far...a bottle of wine, two mains and two starters or deserts!! Very friendly staff and the food was devine. The portions were a very good size....so good we couldn't eat it all!! I would highly reccommend this to anyone who wants a great meal with a friendly atmosphere. Would definately come back next time we are in Wellington....to try the prawns they looked delicious!!! The cocktails were the best!!! I don't know what the previous negative feedback is all about....as we have dined at alot of places and this was tops!! Thanks again
Mel and Phil

Very ordinary food. Heaps of MSG in the food to make it tasty. The size of the main dishes are not much more than an entree. You need at least 2 mains to fill yourself, stingy with the quantity. Not good value for money. Not recommended.
Hilda Low
Very ordinary food, in very simple setting. Could get better food in nicer environment with better ambience. Considering the price - is not exactly value for money. Not recommended. -Muselife-

This place is so low key.
Dumplings amazing! I would return simply for these!
Comprehensive menu, wich was great.
Really dubious songs on the large screen kareoke thing, but I guess that adds to the character.
Great food and reasonably priced. Will be back.

Came here as I was craving for some spicy northern chinese food.

I gave them a call asking whether they did DanDan noodles. They said yes. I was soo excited that I went here for dinner.

Looked at the menu but did not find the DanDan noodles that I was after. Asked the waitress and she suggested this dry noddle with side dish of this oily meat and veges where you add the condiments into your dry noodles yourself. it was an interesting dish.

Would be nice if they did make dandan noodles. Please check my website for a more detailed review

Went there again last night with guests. As always great food - even with the new owners who have been there 6 weeks. Surroundings run down, food great.
Vic
This place is so good, I actually don't want to tell too many people as it may be ruined! But, I can't keep it to myself - everyone should have the dumplings at least once in their life!

We stumbled upon this restaurant last night and it was fantastic. What a gem. Staff were fantastic, food everything I hoped it would be and more. I will be recommending this to our friends and sharing it with our visitors

Fantastic food!!With some of the reviews I am reading I feel as if we are at a different restaurant. Amazing food!! My partner and I have been frequent flyers here at Red Hill and loved it from day dot. Fantastic service. Always remembered to the stages of first name basis.
Every experience is most enjoyable and as good as the last, great food, great service, great people.
Highly recommended

Emma and Leighton

Dined here with a deal voucher (15$ for 30$ worth of food). Service was not great, as soon as I showed the voucher we were treated as second class citizens by the people in the counter (a man and a woman), our waitress was kind though. They wouldn't allow takeout, although nothing was stated in the voucher disallowing such. I would have let it go, but the food was not great as well. We had such a bad experience that we didn't use up the other voucher and just let it expire.

We went to Red Hill with a deal voucher ($30 worth for $15) on a cold Sunday evening. The place was clean, the girls were pleasant, the service attentive. We would have loved to try their speciality (the steam pot) but they said we couldn't have that; we had to choose from the rest of the menu.

The menu is authentically Chinese - hence contains a lot of offal dishes (hearts, etc). We don't eat offal, so this limited our choice somewhat. We ordered chicken and sweet corn soup (excellent); stir-fried pork strips (also very good) and spicy fish. The fish was bits of chewy, dried-up, coated and deep fried stuff in a strangely-flavoured sauce, not at all what we had expected from reading the menu. Rather disappointing, especially as all the other customers (all Asian) were enjoying the steamboat!

The place was cold, but all the steamboats soon steamed up all the windows. Perhaps we just made a wrong choice from the menu. All in all, we enjoyed most of our meal, but we have had better.

However, since the steamboat is their signature dish, it wouldn't have hurt these meanies to let us try it if they really wanted to attract new customers! (N.B. we had made it clear that we would happily have paid any difference). Because of their attitude, we probably won't bother to go back.

Very tasty!
Great sauces, tender meat - will come again
Jim
I usually enjoy Chinese food and had heard this place was good, but it was very disappointing. I had the king prawns in Chef's special sauce and it was almost inedible. The sauce was horrible and the vegetables (peas, sweetcorn and carrots) were clearly straight from a frozen veg bag. The prawns tasted musty. My girlfriend's meal was edible but greasy and dull. Perhaps we just chose really badly but this was the worst meal I've had in Wellington.

OMG. Real Chinese food DOES exist here in New Zealand.

Bear in mind, I'm Chinese by origin, American by nationality, and multicultural by birthright. So, I've been around the block when it comes to "authentic" Chinese cuisine.

We hit the Holy Grail this evening when we decided to check out Red Hill for our weekly night out. Both my fiance, who is a stalwart Kiwi, born and raised who lived in Asia for about a decade, and I, thought the food was EX-CELL-ENT, and stuffed ourselves silly with the food available. Just so you know, we ordered the gamut.

spring rolls (very Western, can't go wrong appetizer, it came out Cantonese style with cabbage and carrots and a sweet/sour/spicy dipping sauce)
cumin lamb and chicken heart skewers (INCREDIBLE, like China and only NZ$1 each)
dry fired string beans with minced pork (YUM)
pork belly with green bell peppers (capsicum) and onions (like CRACK)

Everything was delicious. We felt like we were back in China. Kudos and compliments to the chef.

Tip: Order steamed rice, because you're gonna need it to eat with all of the gorgeous strong flavors here.

Our meal came out to about $56 with large beer and glass of red wine.

p.s. There is also hot pot, with lamb and veggies and split mild and spicy (mala) portions for the hot pot. We'll be checking it out soon.
