Review Big Dogs On Blair - Wellington

Donna Howes
Everything on the menu is great. Normally I find it hard to find things to choose at restaurants, but I want to eat all the things here! And the staff are so nice!

Stopped in for a burger and a beer after a lot of walking. The Saturday deal of a burger and beer was perfect, and the burger was Huge! It wasn't too busy and we had a kid with us who appreciated the amount of chips she received. I can't say I've been at night, but for a very filling meal and a cool, reasonably priced beer this may be the place for you!

Went to BD for dinner a couple of weeks ago. The food was great. It was a little empty but we really enjoyed ourselves. We will be going back again on Thursday night. I'm not sure why you are getting bad reviews!

Came here with my family. We had various dishes, all beautiful. My steak was perfect. Pasta dish was lovely. Great atmosphere and service! Highly recommend.

Was looking for a reasonably priced steak and was impressed with the range of pizzas and other foods. The steak was delicious and so was the sticky date pudding!

Was tasty food and good, kind stuff.

Food was great (Pork Belly), still the same layout as old tenants but attention to detail of your food is better. New start restaurant, but strongly recommend.

Came here on the weekend. Outstanding food and service, pizza was great and they served good portions - would recommend.
Edouard Kutchukian
Good food. Booked via "first table'' and the cost of the meal was really good.

Good was truly divine and came out really fast. Such lovely staff and ambiance made it a really enjoyable evening
Nick Ryan
Excellent pizzas especially the lamb with the caramelised onion. Black Dog beer by the jug.

3/5 Taste
4/5 Display
3/5 Quantity
3/5 Customer Service

Pretty average Bar in Wellington CBD

Probs worth going with first table but id rather find better, beers were more costy compared to other bars, pork was dry pizza was salty.
Plus there were so many flies.
Reasonable to give 3 stars id rekon,
platings were pretty if u want to just improve your IG

Food lacked flavour considering the price. Brought a group of friends and they weren't happy with the size of the portions and the price either. $33 for measly fish and chips?! Re-evaluate your prices please. Until then, I can't really recommend this place.

My son and I felt like having a pizza for early dinner and I suggested "One Red Dog" but realized it's now Big Dog on Blair (goes to show I haven't been back for quite a while!). We were the only clients when we came in but two couples later arrived with toddlers. Staff were nice and our orders came in promptly. We enjoyed the Water Hound pizza (I'm a big seafood fan) which had a really nice, thin crust, as well as their Chunky Handcut Fries. The place was clean, family-friendly, with a nice ambiance.

Shocking meal with eight of us, took ages for food and all of us had problems with the food. Would net go back.
I had snapper which was fried to death supposed to be kumara crisps and they were soggy wedges. There was pork belly with non crispy skin and Vegemite gravy and pasta with overload of pepper. Holy cow!!

I've never rated anywhere less than 3 before, so this is bad. Arrived 7.35. Ordered 7.50pm (at latest). Left at 8.30 without having seen any food. The place was half full at most, so how they ever cope if they're full I can't imagine. We waited longer than we should have before saying anything, but the waitress said it would be "any minute now" at one stage. Then another group asked about their food and decided not to wait any longer. So we asked about ours - 10 minutes we were told. On asking the pizza chef we were told pizza was in and would be 7 mins. It was 8.30 by then and we needed to eat and be gone by 8.50 at the latest so we left. The woman running the place said "you just want to pay for your drinks?" with no sign of being concerned we were leaving. Can only assume it's a common occurence. There was no apology, and she simply said "it's like this every year" (fireworks night). My response to that was "you should have told us so we could have gone somewhere else". Her reply "everywhere else would be fully booked", as if it was up to her to decide what worked for us or not! They were not fully booked themselves. We ate somewhere else and still made it to the fireworks at 9pm.

Not sure why some people rate this place with 5 stars. Crazy. I've been twice now because I had vouchers and didn't want to let them go to waste. Both times I was utterly disappointed. Everything on the menu was overly priced. The food served was average to below average and the portions were very small. My advice, go find a meal that will fill your belly elsewhere for half the price and double the quality.

Went here with a group of 6 for drinks and food on a Friday night. Was surprisingly quiet. There is lots of choicefor drinks including cocktails and a couple of mocktails. We got a few starters to share as well as two pizzas. All the food was a hit, with people complaining the sliders were to small and they needed more.
Service was good and they continued to check in with us throughout the night to see if we needed more drinks.

First of all we went to the restaurant thinking not many people are dining here tonight. We have ordered the pad Thai curry that came with naan bread when everyone had a little piece of it. We then looked at closely and had found mould. We have ordered the pad Thai curry that came with bread when everyone had a little piece of it. We then looked at closely and had found mould.this had put off our food for the rest of the night before all this usthis had put off our food for the rest of the night the four of us was not happy with what we had served thinking we would get some compensation we received another plate of flatbread, which we didn't one as we didn't want anything else to eat after looking at the mould. Oh no wouldn't give us a discount, because of the incident. Been good and we would've been happy with that but all she got off it was nothing. Very experience for us having the night in Wellington would not return to this restaurant !!!!!!

I was there with my boyfriend, actually it was our anniversary, and it was really friendly staff, and I highly recommend the place. I advise you to try the fish, it was lovely and fresh, I dont eat meat, but my boyfriend said that his steak was the best that he had had in a long time.

Just got back from Big Dogs on Blair - what a find! I had given up on family dining until I went there with my large group tonight. They made us feel very welcome, great range of beers on tap, and man - they know how to make a good mojhito! Can't speak well enough of the pasta - it was the daily special which changes from day-to-day, tonight it was fab! They got our group seated and fed in time for our movie, even had time to spare for a mixed berry creme brulee - absolute magicians! Definitely heading back there for my next group event.

A wonderful place, biggest serving sizes in Wellington, especially that Courtenay Place-area - where you are paying top dollar for tiny tinsie winsy portions - do yourselves a favour GO TO BIG DOGS! Flavors were amazing - definitely try the pork belly! Service was top notch - friendly as! we received our meals in good time and then went halves in a chocolate fondue with churos!!!
A winner!

I was new to Wellington and hadn't spent a lot of time looking around, really just looking for some food to fuel my adventures to come. There was a hair on my extremely overpriced pizza which was accompanied by portions of potato "fries" representing almost whole potatoes in themselves. I left full, but with empty pockets and a bad mood :(
George Smith
Ridiculously costly with prices such as $34 for large pizzas. Ended up ordering a burger for $25 that came with "hand crafted fries" which consisted of chunky almost quartered potatoes. The burger had a mini sized patty paired with a slice of tomato and a leaf of lettuce. I was full in the end due to the huge portions of bread and potato I was presented with. Will not be recommending this place to anyone, in fact, I will try to discourage people from spending such large sums for overpriced pub food.

Went here for a early meal with a friend before other events of the evening. Was sorely disappointed by the service from the wait staff. The lack of interest was obvious and they ignored you no matter how much you tried to grab their attention.

The restaurant was recommended to me by one of my mates who lives in Wellington, so I decided to go and try this restaurant, the menu had variety of dishes in it, some attractive pizzas as well, but then I decided to go with the chicken breast, which had amazing flavours in it and was beautifully presented.
Staff were very attentive and professional.
Service was good and the environment was perfect for a nice and relaxing evening, if this is what you are after.
Will recommend this to other people as well.
Chris Turnbull
Two lunchtime meals here now in a couple months and both times have been fantastic. Excellent fresh quality food, flavour twists that you don't expect but they work. All at a reasonable price. Will keep coming back.

A friend recommended to us to come to Big Dogs on Blair for dinner and so we came last weekend for a meal. We ordered the Calamari rings for an entree to share and they were divine. For the mains we had the Fish of the day, which was classic and simple seared fish with a home-made feel and salad. And the Pork Belly, which was roast pork with kumara chips. Both were spectacularly presented at a good price. The lovely ladies who served us were joyful and we are happy to have come.

You guys definitely have great pizza! We came here last night and ordered a couple of large pizzas. Bulldogs and Mastiff maybe? The front of house staff served us quite quickly and the pizzas came out really fast. Awesome place to eat out with fabulous service. Thanks so much for the savy lady boss.

I really enjoyed our recent visit - the pizzas were delicious, and they were very accommodating to our small daughter (putting us a little way away from the other diners so we weren't too disruptive, and providing her with toys and colouring in). I would definitely visit again.

Going here was the worst dining experience I've ever had! We ended up eating here as all of the other restaurants in Blair Street were fully booked at the time so unfortunately we had to go through the horrible experience of dining here. All of the food was very average and some were horribly burnt and the bread stale. An hour after our orders were taken we were told two of the things we ordered were not available today?! And the meals were bought out one at a time about 10 minutes apart then some of our order was forgotten. It was a joke!
The service was bad. When we asked about the wait times and burnt food to two of the waiters they both ignored us and said our table wasn't in their section. There was one waitress that served us for most of the time and she was good considering what a mess this place was. Worst experience ever. Go somewhere else with your money!!

This is my first restaurant review. I took my family here for a birthday meal last night and have never experienced such crap food and service in all my life. Meals were slow to come. Two meals came out then 15 min later the waitress said no more chicken curry left and ordered something else. Pork schnitzel was burnt. Chips were oily and poorly cooked. Pizza had large chunks of tomato which were chucked on. The waitress was trying her best but they were under staffed. No itemised account and had to demand non payment of burnt meal and no apology. This place should be closed down.

Big Dogs are one of the few establishments in Wellington who make commendable, full bodied hearty pizzas, bringing a good variety of different options in contrast to several vested pizzerias who make the light bodied style of gourmet pizza. On our visit this week we had a group of 5 who ordered 3 Medium sizes and a Large to share between 2 of us. These pizzas were a good change of pace and vogue, the ingredients and toppings on them were well arranged and worked wholesomely together such as; Caramelised onions and steak strips on one or Bacon, chorizo sausage with sundried tomatoes on another.

One of us had dietary restrictions and needed a Gluten-free option, and it was nice to see that Big Dogs had provided us with an option for a gluten-free/ vegetarian pizza, and after the mains all the guests were happy. The waiters were friendly, mature and experienced and made sure our dining experience was first rate.

In the end we all had positive responses, I was happy to have been a customer, and have recommended Big Dogs to some more pizza-lover friends of mine to try. Thanks.

Staff did well on a particularly busy night. As for our meals, we ordered chunky fries for the entree. It was served with liberal gravy, I'd say for starters they were a decent choice. The mains were the Fish of the Day & Pasta of the Day as well as a Chili Chicken pizza to share. Both mains were well cooked, well presented with good hearty portions. Both went well with a Tuatara Hefe . Afterwards no room was left for dessert but a pair of dessert wines sufficed. All in all a I'd rate this highly and would recommend.

Visited for a mate's birthday.

We were promptly seated and service was fast.

Entries came quickly and orders were placed efficiently.

I ordered a pizza (something like 'bulldog' I believe.) Tasted great and really filled me up.

Staff were friendly and drinks were constantly being checked.

Overall nice experience from this place.

I can't believe what a bad meal we had!! This use to be a favorite place to eat but since change of name and owners it's gone down hill and I will never go back. The table and chairs are cheap and uncomfortable, the cheap fairy lights does nothing for the place, also bathrooms dirty and smelly.
Then the meal!!! Spicy buffalo wings what a joke, only spice was the Asian five spice!! No dipping sauce for the dry blue cheese wontons, and the pizza should have been named the red pepper pizza!!...Left behind 70 bucks and no happy and will never go back or suggest this place to any one!!

To start I will admit I had some good times here when it was One Red Dog. It seems the red dog has gotten fat and lazy, which is why the name has changed.

Past positive experiences aside, last night out Thai exchange student chose this establishment because she was hungry, and Monsoon Poon was a 45 minute wait.

We walked in to find a half empty restaurant and at 8:30p on Saturday, it could be because Pizza lovers are watching the Hurricanes. It turns out many people knew of the level of food and service here.

Ordering was fine, we asked our exchange student what she wanted and she chose a pizza with no onion. My son was salivating at the pork spare ribs. My wife and daughter go vegetarian with the Pasta. My minted lamb pizza sounded good.

What we got to experience was, very dry spare ribs. My son couldn't finish what was dry and smothered in a burnt tasting glaze. Our Thai student will think we have idiots in the kitchen as she removed layers of onion from her pizza. And to top it off, and I have to admit. It maybe a small thing, but when waiting staff say they'll bring water for the table, I expect it to arrive without having to intervene after 10 minutes of no service.

A positive was the big dog delivered good pasta, so my girls walked away fulfilled. I had to be calmed down and was given $5 off a $100+ bill. Yay, 5% off for an evening of ineptitude and disorganization. Well I suppose that's why the red dog got fat and lazy.

In December we came here with 18 people for a Christmas staff function. We inquired about a set menu beforehand and the manager was very prompt in providing us with ideas for the menu. So we booked for the night and ordered several large pizzas and pizza half splits. The bulldogs had tender strips of steak on top. Another set were seafood pizzas, and the salmon tasted fresh like day catch. We had no problems with the food, and everyone had their meals on the table all hot. The only gripe would be that the seafood basket had too many fried potatoes and was too big to be an entree. To top the night off everyone shared fondue which was sweet and classy. Even gents can appreciate the finer things. We were given a round of drinks as a Xmas present from the big boss, so cheers

After eating here I felt like I had to sign up & write a review.
Had a terrible eating experience here. They clearly use cheap & nasty ingredients, which seems unnecessary considering the prices.
Don't ever get the olives, they are clearly straight out of a can. The blue cheese wontons were pretty bad also. Had the Lamb salad as a main which was yummy, but the mandarins were foul & tasted like they were also from a can. We had to pick them all out before continuing to eat. Won't be going back. Ever.

Came to Big Dogs on Valentine's Day as we spotted the free garlic bread with the meal~ We were seated pretty quickly and were greeted with a Valentine's menu. We chose to order the pizza and kebabs instead which were fantastic. Kebabs were beautifully done. The drinks came quickly and we actually ordered a few more rounds and spent the better part of our night here, letting the atmosphere soak in. Good value, would recommend+
Anton
Fantastic cocktails and good beers guys. Well done. The burgers and fries were decently made. Entrees, which were tapas and garlic bread were sweet too. It was a good place for an evening summer feed. I dig the nice interior decoration.

Went there on a Friday evening. Drink order was initially forgotten.
Garlic bread arrived needing seasoning, which I've never experienced before.
The blue cheese promised on one pizza appeared to be replaced with feta. The salad with roasted vegetables had overcooked bits.
Pizzas arrived tasting bizarre - greasy and tasteless. I suspect the kitchen staff had not sampled their meals in a long time and had chosen to substitute ingredients for the cheapest alternatives. Very poor when quality ingredients for an excellent pizza are far less than the 27-32 dollars we were charged per pizza.

A very below-par experience that left us feeling nasty for a couple of days afterwards. We were asked whether the meal was good by two wait staff and reluctantly provided the same feedback. To be honest we were very surprised by the bill which was not adjusted after our feedback, so I guess this kind of feedback isn't unusual.

I wouldn't want to pay to eat the quality of food we were served on that night, regardless of price and I feel foolish for not disputing the bill. We will not be returning and do not wish to be offered any inducements to do so in the future.

We had a great time here on a weekend night with a big group. We only ordered the pizzas, so can't speak for the rest of the mains menu, but the pizzas were really, really good and enjoyed by all.

I recommend this restaurant if you have a big group of friends and want to enjoy a relaxed meal in a relaxed environment that isn't too loud.

Oh - and try the French Poodle pizza, it was YUM, and really different (blue cheese, caramel onion, rocket, cheese, walnut and pear).

We haven't been to Big Dogs in a little while, but it was definitely a pleasant surprise as the menus have much improved. We ordered a 300g Sirloin steak, which was huge and cooked perfectly at medium rare. Well worth it, and it seems like they know what they're doing.

The rest of the family had the French poodle pizza with blue cheese topping. It was extravagant ~ who knew blue cheese tasted so good on pizza.
As a patron who dines out on occasion we felt welcomed, and the waitstaff were very friendly to the kids. *Gold Stars

Got a voucher deal to this place. I normally don't write reviews, but it felt necessary in this case. The bloody mary was overpriced and tasted of old tomato juice sans liquor. The "fresh cut French fries" were baked wedges, which weren't good. The pizza for a large was a medium at best and were very few toppings. Glad this was a voucher deal as I would have hated to pay any more for this meal than I did. Was very disappointed about this restaurant, but am thankful there are plenty of other great restaurants around Wellington.

Excellent service! I had bought a couple of deal vouchers and the meals were huge and amazing!!! Would definitely go there again - what a treat! The staff were just marvellous. The atmosphere is brilliant and the waiting times weren't that long.

My partner and I recently visited Big Dog on Blair at the recommendation of friends, and, overall, we weren't impressed. None of the staff seemed to know what their co-workers were doing, so we got asked the same questions at least twice ("Would you like something to drink?", "Have you placed your order?", and so on). The food sounded delicious on the menu, but was horrible when it came to the table! Out of five tapas plates, I found only one (satay beef kebabs) palatable. Since my partner didn't seem to have any problems, I didn't send anything back.

I'd return to Big Dog on Blair, but would be wary of choosing from the tapas section of the menu again.
Manda Loree
My partner and I have been here a few times, and every time the pizzas are gorgeous!. Seriously, if you want good pizza, you have to know where to look. We don't usually order mains but on occasion we get the tapas and fries with a pint of lager. The service was warm and friendly. Thanks guys.
Caffeinated Weka
Very little seems to have changed from the previous incarnation of this restaurant. The menu is surprisingly familiar menu and the environment identical, which is fine. However, the food last night was simply dreadful. I ordered gnocchi with chicken - well, that's what it said on the menu. What I got was dry, overdone chicken pieces and nondescript vegetables underneath something that looked and tasted like overdone pan fried haloumi - I'm guessing this was meant to be gnocchi. According to my friend, the salmon was a marginally better choice. Our service was ok; we had an early meal on the way to another appointment so appreciated being able to get in and out quickly, but we won't be returning to Big Dogs.
Carina Chang
I bought deal vouchers, pizza was good, love their entrees, it's pretty good.

I went to BDB last night. Ordered the mushroom soup for entree which was fine. Ordered the special of the day-1 doz chicken wings & fries. The waitress came back to say only half a dozen available. Just as well- they were passed their use by date. inedible. Told the waitress who came back to say the chef had eaten one & they were fine.
When we went to pay the bill the manager said there was nothing wrong with the chicken but she would give us a discount. She really meant she would not charge us for what we couldn't eat.
I suggested that she give us the chicken wings & I would have them tested & if they were OK I would come back & pay for them & if not I would advise the health dept.. She decided she would rather I didn't.
She then advised that there would be a 15% surcharge as it was a public holiday. There were no signs outside or inside or on the menus or verbal advice that this was the case. I chose not to pay the surcharge.
I won't be going back again. Ever.

I thought it be nice to check this place out. Food was great, a tiny tad expensive, but the 2 large pizzas were masterpieces and actual healthy large portions for large pizzas.

For dessert we had the passion-fruit cheesecake and berry sundae, those were delightful too... except we were already quite full from the mains so we couldn't really savor them.

Good Work!
Pete
My fam and I dined at Big Dogs last weekend.
Staff were really helpful; as I'm a vegetarian they recommended to us the "Paris" pizza, which I must say I want the recipe to.

Drinks came quickly, cosy atmosphere.

A delight. Nice addition to Welly.

Last weekend on Saturday night few girls had dinner at Big Dog which was a Big disappointment. We ordered starters which never came to our table, then we canceled the starters and ordered the mains which took an hour to arrive to our table after reminding the staff couple of times. And the food we recieved was really cold, we wasted so much food that day. The service was equally terrible with no proper response from staff. We even spotted some people leaving the table without touching their food. It's a shame that all are expectations of this restaurant was shattered. We are not sure if it's worthy of a visit again.
