Review Thorndon Quay Cafe - Wellington

Food is excellent especially the carrot cake. The steak and mushroom pie and the butter chicken pies are also excellent. Great service and wonderful home made food.

Extremely friendly staff. Went there for Sunday Brunch 14/2/21. Ordered Egg Benedict hands down the best I’ve ever eaten. Oil free and good portion of fish and chips. To end with French toast absolutely brilliant. Valentines Bruch with family 👍👍👍👍.

Best Chicken Snitzel ever. Went here to get some lunch today. I orded the chicken snitzel which was absolutely amazing. The chicken was perfectly cooked. The portion here were also very generous considering how the meal only costed $19. The staff here are also very friendly and allways happy. Overall I'd highly recommend coming here if you want some great food.

Well priced food and amazing service. Have possibly been to this cafe 125 times and never been disappointed.

Lovely food, crazy good prices and the coffee was amazing. Both meals were $11 specials, and worth every cent. The schnitzel was on the right side of crunchy, the poached eggs were perfect.

Great tasty excellent value breakfast with a smile. My wife and I had the mince in vogels and our daughters had the hash stacks. All excellent. Mushrooms in the side. Yum.

What a lovely convenient cafe, located close close to places where you might want to get a coffee while you wait, great food amazing service and accommodating. Interesting atmosphere. Great food and sweet options and even a well priced location for a quick lunch by yourself or with a friend. Nice chairs and tables as one would expect and right next to the bus stop.

I've just discovered this great cafe in Thorndon. It's new owners are friendly and welcoming and offer a varied and tasty menu. Their custard slices are amazing! Looking at past reviews the new owners have obviously improved things considerably. The cafe is light, spacious and airy - one of Wellington's best kept secrets.

I ordered avocado and chicken on bread and was given brown avocado, over cooked chicken and what seemed like a whole bottle of mayonnaise on it. We also ordered eggs on toast. The Scrambled eggs were tasteless not to mention watery and the toast that came with that was rock solid. But hey coffee was alright :)

Coffee was nice. Crepe not cooked through properly. Bacon was on the extremely raw side. The guy that served us tried telling us Wellingtonions like their bacon raw. Too many excuses. Management could have offered to replace it quicker than they did. Probably wouldn’t choose to dine again to be honest. Pretty average

This has become my regular cafe, really good simple food, they have $12 specials which are really good and change weekly (steak/chips/salad or chicken schnitzel/chips/salad etc etc). Generous portion sizes for $12. The breakfasts are also good value for $$. The sandwiches are good and so are the baked goods. My partner and I are come here when we're looking for a quick lunch out, we reckon it's one of the only cafes in Wellington where you can get a simple old school feed for good prices!

Thought would give this place another chance never again, poached eggs where boiled hard same as my colleague's meal, asked for some sauce twice this never appeared bacon overcooked, and looking around people where walking away and leaving meals half eaten, If I could rate minus I would will not be back and not the first time we have gone for a work lunch.

Thoroughly disappointing, should've followed my instinct and trekked a little further down the road. Atmosphere is severely lacking, cold hard surfaces, chairs, tables. Staff were unwelcoming and seemed frankly annoyed by my presence, although more than happy to chat amongst themselves. It was early afternoon and what was left of the cabinet food appeared unappetising to the point where I didn't bother trying any. Coffee itself was average, the right temperature but an all too common over extracted bitterness. Won't be back.

If it's an uncrowded place you're after, you'll really enjoy this place. It was so unpatroned I thought it was closed.

A previous reviewer summed up to the decor and atmosphere well. Drab and in need of a refresh. Same to be said for staff.

The cabinet food is looked overall unappealing but went a cheese scone which was average. The coffee was fine.

Unfortunately for them, the bakery down the road is the reverse for virtually every comment.

Driven pass this place so many times and today I visited whilst my car was serviced.

Ample metered street parking though noted a sign in the cafe saying the won't give meter change.

2 lovely half dead plants welcome and farewell you. Sad and in need of attention.

Whilst familiar faces are greeted with smiles it was obvious that the same did not apply to new faces.

Interior is tired and drab. Lots of hard surfaces. The furniture is uncomfortable as the chairs are metal backed and the tables have a metal bar sitting below the table for you to conveniently whack your leg on when you cross your legs. So old fashioned. Hated the square tables which had been cut in half on the diagonal. So impractical.

The cabinet to the left was brimming with food whilst the cabinet to the right looked like a poor country cousin, displaying a meagre offering.

Prices are at the lower end for food with the most expensive menu item bring $14. With coffee and tea between $3.50 - $4.

No music playing, loud and echoing sounds of the coffee machine.

Lots of staff, so many that they had time to have little gatherings and chatting sessions.

Had planned to sit and have a couple of coffees but just so lacking in atmosphere.

Oh yes food and drink. Coffee was luke warm and the apple pie was reheated in the microwave and soggy. Says it all.

Won't be back.

If you've got work on your minds this is a great place to go. I'd recommend starting your day here if you want to plan your day or you're in a pensive mood.
I like to go and sit somewhere off the beaten track to kick start my day, rather than an overcrowded cafe with barely enough space to sit.

It's hard to find empty car parks in a row in Wellington but its easy to get a park here in the morning.

My immediate impression of the food was that it was freshly baked. I've often been to cafes where I've paid expensive prices for wilted or hard dry stale food and been disappointed.
If you've ever had that experience, you'll be impressed by TQ's food.

I thought their food was made by someone who knows food, and knows how to cook well.

It might not be the first choice of where I'd take my family for lunch but I'd definately go back with friends or work collegues.
