Review Punjabi Pratha - Wellington

Love this place. Quick and accessible Indian food that is delicious, in a setting that makes you feel like you’re eating chaat in India. Usually plenty of vegan and vegetarian options. I highly recommend the Chole Bhatura and the Samosas.

Great place for authentic Punjabi food if you are not after fine dining atmosphere and a plastic spoon is good enough. The Special Thali (4 different curries of your choice, rice, naan bread) for 15 bucks is awesome value and the couple running the place are as friendly as it gets. Both thumbs up!

Small casual street food style take out place with fantastic prices. Much cheaper than other places, but you notice the difference in decor, upkeep etc. Some items are heated in a microwave. It's generally tasty, but you get what you pay for.

The flavours are rich and authentic, and the portions were generous and price sense affordable, for a good munch! The staff are friendly, straightforward and the service was quick. 😋👌

Economical place compared to other restaurants considering the fact that this is a fast food joint. Don't miss out on their curry collections. They taste a little sour, may be because of fresh lemon juice. But great taste, great quality, always served hot! If you are in Te Aro around Cuba or Manners Street, you should definitely check it out! The pics I have included are of Saag Paneer and Daal Tadka. Haven't tried their naan yet. I keep my budget at $8 for brunch!

GOATed butter chicken and garlic naan. Perfect lunch spot or for a first date. It's literally curry and a place to eat curry. Simple, delicious, and cheap.

Recently due to covid, now holidaying in WGTN twice a year & have walked past here plenty of times on the way to Courtenay Place food heaven. Punjabi Pratha closed on Sunday's & stopped by & had a look through the window & noticed there special board. Popped in today & tried there 4 curries, rice & Naan for $12.99. WOW, so many options to choose from, delicious flavours & what a incredible bargain. Will be sure to be coming back here everytime I'm back in WGTN in the future & telling lots of others about this hidden gem.

I went to this restaurant for the $14.99 deal. Great price for rice+4 curries AND naan, food tasted awesome! The guy in charge was also really friendly and accommodating.

The food was ok i ordered chicken but it was not up to the punjabi mark. The rice could be good and can be made with some twist in spices

Went to Punjabi Paratha today for lunch. I ordered the Special Thali as I enjoy trying different curries. All curries were tasty and the Vindaloo had the right amount of heat for me. The naan bread was nice and fresh. A good-sized meal for lunch and definitely value for money. The husband and wife team were friendly and sociable. I will be going back soon.

Ordered lamb Rogan josh, it’s basically water sauce with a hint of flavouring, I thought lamb rogan josh was supposed to be a spicier curry but it’s super mild with no spice at all, lamb was very chewy :( disappointed with my choice of lunch

Didnt know a butter chicken wrap meant..wrapping some rice with a little bit of butter chicken sauce and a few smelly pieces of chicken in a naan bread. Absolutely revolting and a rip off which ended up in the bin. Never to return.

Terrible experience, first I went to order a curry and rice and show the lady the sign. She went on to add a naan without even asking me, and then she charged me 9$ when curry and rice is only 5.99$. I hate when people do that. I started eating the food, and didn't feel that hungry so I had a lot of leftovers for the next day. I quickly started getting sick maybe 45 minutes after eating, but wasn't sure if it was from the food or not. Turns out, next day I reheated the food and the rice smelled so bad, looked bad as well like all buttery... I'll never try it again.

Had twice in this place ,once in friday market and on manners street the next time. Wanted to have something really good after a morning starve. Walked in got chicken vindaloo for lunch ,but all i got was SOYA vindaloo. And i asked the staff for it ,they saif it was the menu for today. no chicken . But it was labelled as chicken vindaloo. ..Even soya curry was runny and not up to the mark. Very less salt and no good spices except chilly powder. If you decided to give food for cheap rates ,u should make sure u are not compromising on the quality . Very disappointed with this shop as it is placed in one of the busy streets in te aro yet bad display of food

A colleague of mine eats here regularly and rates their $5.00 curry. <br/><br/>Myself and another colleague tried it for the first time today. I got the veggie chick pea curry. I asked them to swap the rice for the naan. And they did for no extra cost. Usually it's a dollar extra for the naan. <br/><br/>It's not a big portion but a good size for a lunch; not too big. Mine was tasty with a nice heat to it. It was medium and not too spicy. Naan was a little rubbery but ok. It's not big either but again good for lunch.<br/><br/>My colleague was less impressed with his butter chicken saying there was only thee small pieces of chicken and the rice was average.<br/><br/>I enjoyed mine.

My mate and I from Invercargill were attracted to this place by the price $7:99 for 2 Curry's on rice with Naan bread we thought wow what could go wrong with that. And something smelt great too so she got butter chicken and korma chicken and I got mango chicken and chilly beef. The lady was nice however our food was a dis-appontment the sauces were really runny and butter chicken tasted like a dull tomato soup. Meat was dry and naan bread was over cooked, burnt , dry and tasted like cupboard. The mango chicken had these chicken meatballs that tasted disgusting and also that was not mango chicken. Nothing tasted great we paid $8 thinking this was going to taste great than you dissappiont. I think who ever cooks the food shouldn't even be a cook seriously disgusting. We should have taken our food back to theasy and asked for a refund but she was nice and I guess it wasnt her fault because she probably wasn't the cook. We recommend to our friends and people round here to not ever go there India take away restaurant on manners St. Your better off with all those other take aways like MacDonald and bk down the road than this crap food. You sopn get a review from my mate Jade who was with me.

$5 for takeaway curries and $1 to add naan. Price is excellent but of course you can't expect much...<br/><br/>But there is a winner in this shop, the chicken korma is very tasty. Creamy and sweet with great spice flavours. Butter chicken is far too sweet and very runny and the lamb dishes are very oily with bad flavour and AWFUL lamb cuts. One time ordering lamb roganjosh every single piece of lamb was just fat and connective tissue.<br/><br/>I've yet to try all the curries but there could be something else nice hiding in the menu. Buy the korma if you want to play it safe.

Absolutely can't be beaten for value - and the taste is good too! Utilitarian inside but I wasn't expecting anything more. Lovely friendly lady at the counter today.

If you're on a budget and just need to get a fill, this is good enough. Butter chicken and tikka masala are very much average-tasting, and I think the chicken's not cooked in tandoor at all. The sauce is a bit runny for both dishes, and don't even step in if you are looking for ambiance. You get what you pay for. However, the staff are nice and accommodating even if you just drop by to ask about their offers. Having said this, they are still better in terms of value for money and staff courtesy, than Indian Taj at Capital Market. I mean, who would complain for a $5 combo (curry, naan, and rice)?

One of the best curry ever I had. Value for money.<br/>I really like the quality and quantity of food which Punjabi paratha serve.<br/>I suggest everyone should go and try authentic Indian food.<br/>The entire meal just for 6.99$

Don't fall for the price. Ordered chicken tikka and chicken chilli, rice and naan. naan was not bad at least chewable other than that the chicken got some horrible smell and taste. rice was very average. I wouldn't go back and do not recommend to any body. this place needs some serious management or shut down.

Price attracted me that try this spot. $6.99 for curry, rice and naan... I thought I would try the chicken tikka masala and a little channa masala. I needed something quick to takeaway and munch on... being gluten free the naan doesn't count for the review. The service was good but when I asked of the chicken was cooked in a tandoor she answered no its 'chicken tikka masala' ... um yeah tikka in that name should refer to cooked in a tandoor... it wasnt. The chicken was left behind when eating cause it was VERY average. I wouldnt go back and wouldnt recommend. .. pay more or the same but get sushi or even burger king and you are better off.

On Wednesday 18th March 2015 – my partner Charmaine and myself walked past an Indian restaurant called Punjabi Pratha on Manners Street in Central Wellington.<br/><br/>We spotted this sign which said you can have unlimited curry’s for $8.99 – we thought this was very reasonable and decided to take the store owner up on the offer.<br/><br/>'Unlimited Food' $8.99<br/><br/>When Charmaine ordered two curries and rice the store owner said hey ill give you this curry for free and without even asking if she wanted it he piled it on her plate – on top of the other two curries she ordered. I ordered my two curries but wasn’t given a special third for some reason. The amount of rice was at least 4 cups – this is to make you get full very fast so you refrain from getting more helpings.<br/><br/>We sat down at the back of the shop and started eating, Charmaine tried the ‘special’ curry that the store owner gave her for free and was alarmed at how hot it was, she started sweating and her mouth was burning so much we had to go up and buy an overpriced can of Sprite to try take the pain from the chilli away.<br/><br/>I ate the rest of her hot curry as the store owner said – you have to finish it all before you are able to have any refills – which is fair enough as both Charmaine and I both hate food being wasted. We came up the second time to get the next two curries, Charmaine this time got Butter Chicken and we went back to our table we were sitting at… This time she had to go back to the counter and ask for chicken as he gave her only sauce, not one but of chicken. He then kindly gave her two pieces – pathetic. We started eating and Charmaine again got bad luck, this time she bit down on a piece of steel which made pain shoot through her filling and tooth. Before I went up to the store owner I took the two below pictures of the steel wool which was found – he appologized and went and told the chefs out the back… what he did not do though, was remove the butter chicken from the bulk and discard it or check if there was any more steel wool in there… dentists are not cheap.<br/><br/>We finished our second meal and we thought OK, let’s get one more and this time we will take it away. He was very reluctant to give us the 3rd meal and started saying how he hates people wasting food, we explained that we were not going to waste it and we would eat it all like the two previous dishes we consumed. We went back to the table to get our things and proceeded to leave the shop, he then said “Hey! where are you going?” I explained that we had a meeting and that we would take the food home and eat it later – he said that you cannot take away the food – when we first ordered he said that we could take away the food, and i explained that to him and he started getting angry and started hurling abuse at us. I exchanged a few words with him as well – telling him that the customer service is terrible, finding the steel, not being given any meat and trying to stop us from getting another helping.<br/><br/>He chased us out the shop when I started taking pictures and followed down the road while talking on the phone and filming us. He followed us onto Courtney Place and my partner started becoming very concerned about him.<br/><br/>The ironic thing was when we got there I said how great the deal was and he said “tell all your friends” well, he got his wish and not only will this website be registered to a NZ Domain name I will also place reviews in every single online food review place on the internet.<br/><br/>I have contacted the Wellington City Council and made a complaint and they are now investigating this shop.

I ordered lacha prantha, amritsar kulach and mango lassi. These are best lacha prantha ,amritsari kulcah and mango lassi i have ever had in New Zealand. it tasted like i am in India. Customer service was alright but food was fantastic. I will recommend this outlet who want to eat fantastic Indian food and not bother about the luxury.
