Review Coolsville Trading Post - Wellington

Very cosy little cafe in Hataitai!! Lovely, vegetarian options available, the milkshake was crazy good and the scone that I tried was perfect 😍 the atmosphere is also very local and friendly, so it’s a lovely place to go to spend in the community. I will go back ^^

Owners are cool. I saw a dog outside today. The first time I came, the barista said I looked like Harry Potter and put a lightning bolt on my latte. 10/10. I then promptly left my wallet in the bathroom and they were super chill about holding it until I got back.

Most impressive little smart flush toilet I met here:). The water runs into the little sink to the water tank, wash your hands first, then the water goes to flush TL. Perfect!

Disappointed the frosting on the carrot cake wasn't cream cheese. Coffee w good though.

Love this place. While the coffee is not my favorite the place is really beautiful and they have a awesome selections of little gifts you can get too if needed. Only one small table outside but beautiful storefront seating!

Coolsville Cartel catered our conference this weekend and did the most fantastic job! The food was to die for and everybody loved it. So easy and professional to deal with. Thank you Lindsay!

Awesome coffeee, friendly staff, always a good vibe coming in.

They’re very friendly, make great coffee. The feel in the place is homely and Hataitai-esque I guess. Love popping in for a takeaway coffee. 5/5!

A welcome addition to Hataitai area for good coffee and great selection of sandwiches, salads and sweet treats, to have in or take away. Love the selection of cards and gifts available for every occasion. You feel welcomed and communal sitting areas are a great way to meet new people.

Cool setting. Good coffee and a range of sandwich type options. Also lots of gift options which would make it good if you're on the way to a party.

Love Coolsville, finally an answer to Hataitai prayers! great coffee and food that we don't have to go into town for :)

The owner is the sandwich queen!

I have to admit I was scathingly presumptive about Coolsville. Anything calling itself coolsville is bound for a serious fall under the microscope. Furthermore its billing as paleo / gluten free gives it a serious handicap in my estimation - a quick read of my review for the whatsit unbakery in Ponsonby will give you a flavour of my prejudice.

We picked up one of the kids from Auckland on saturday morning and, trying to demonstrate we had an ethical, nutritional and fashionable version of Ponsonby in Hataitai we took her to Coolsville. It was full and we left.

However, next morning at 8.50, ten minutes before opening time, we were parked opposite, watching the cafe door in the rear vision mirror, waiting to pounce before there was a repetition of Saturday. At 8.59 we rapidly secured three seats - we weren't the first.

My first order was of humble pie.

Then:

Two trim caps and a hot chocolate. The caps were thinly textured for a cap, but the flavour was very good - atomic coffee.

French toast with caramelised banana and yoghurt: Delicious, verging on luscious. I can still taste it in my imagination hours later.

Eggs Benny with ham on a sourdough. Unexpectedly also came with tomato: It was good, but it was what it was, not edgy, but a good example of a classic. The hollandaise was excellent and the egg perfectly cooked.

Kumara Hash-cake, with spinach, salmon, poached egg, hollandaise and capers: Gorgeous. A mix of textures and flavours where the package was greater than the sum of its parts. It was very, very good. Possibly the best and most interesting thing Ive eaten for a week or two (with salty pidgin's chocolate brûlée).

Service was great - really nice folk.

The chef/owner(?) comes from Canada and that possibly explains why the fit out isn't the usual Maranui chain / Fidels / Memphis etc. Its kind of different and I like it.

Overall Coolsville is a new bright star in the Wellington cafe scene, not just a good suburban local but one which is worth crossing town to try. Unfortunately its small but at 8.59am, if you get a park nearby, and you keep an eye in the rear vision mirror, you might just get a seat.

Highly recommended.

I like these guys! It's a very small, intimate place but I'm glad someone's come in and had a crack at doing something different in Hataitai. It's my local village so I'm regularly eating out of there, but I find the other two cafes fairly average and tend to head to Te Aro for a feed that isn't a takeaway. (Apart from the local pub which is awesome).

It was a fairly brief visit, stopped in for brunch. There were a couple of people, some potential locals/regular's bantering with the owner. That's what I like out of a cafe, something homely, where you ain't just another face. You can sit down, see them cooking in the back, have a chat. Read your paper, whatever. It's like chilling in someone's kitchen!

I'm looking forward to coming in on a more regular basis! Their coffee is smooth and strong, a blessing on a day dearly needing caffeine. I love the bacon benny wrap, really filling and comes with some greens and sauce when you stick around.

Re visit * turning into a regular 😎
