Review Li's Charcoal - Wellington

Simple and delicious I try the classic ham burger 🍔

Pretty good for a cheap fish n chip / Chinese takeaway. Not the freshest oil for fried stuff sometimes but the Chinese is good for the price and I eat here relatively often.
Andrew
Very nice wedges, both crispy, salty, light and fluffy. The various fried rice flavours are also very tasty, and was made hot and fresh when I ordered recently. Haven't tried many of the other dishes yet, but will be sure to soon.

Just your regular fish n chips shop / Chinese takeaways at reasonable prices. They prepare Chinese takeaways quickly, often it's just 5 minutes for a single order. Decent portions.

Love this place, great if you're vegetarian they will do replacements in burgers eg: changing chicken to potato fritter in a burger for free! I know it's cheaper but I have found most fish and chip shops will charge you more for it :((. Sometime the food can be a bit greasy, but a great place to go for a treat!

I like these guys. The food's quality and the portions are massive and cheap, the cooks are quick, menus got a decent variety and overall it's just yum. They keep that old school small-town fish'n'chip thing happening in the big city. The workers are super friendly. I rate it.

I used to go here when it was Charcoal Chicken. They did an excellent chicken & veg dinner for about $10 if I recall. The spuds were always undercooked though, EVERY TIME lol. Now it's under new ownership - I buy the Chinese food - It's very reasonably priced at an average $13. And generous portions with plenty of veges and decent sized pieces of meat. They cook the meals on a wok within view unlike some other more expensive competitors who reheat pre cooked helpings in a microwave. For good Chinese food at budget prices I would recommend.

Something you'd like to have at late night. It's actually quite tasty compared with other Chinese takeaways.

I am sure this place is called Cuba Street Takeaways? Really good food and service and all the prices seem more than reasonable.

Delicious cheeseburgers, great service. Highly recommend to anyone wanting something simple and delicious

Li's served amazing chicken and gravy. Unfortunately they're gone now. Replaced with a regular fish and chip shop. So if you want charcoal chicken look elsewhere.

Over the four years I have lived above this place this is by far the best quality thier food has been. They've improved so much. Can't beat thier nasi goreng (ask them to go light on the cabbage) and chicken wings ($6 for 6) all under $20. Good luck finding better value anywhere else!

mean as feeds when drunk. i've never been there sober but i'm sure it's still delicious. once they forgot my sauce but remembered me when i came in next time and gave it to me then for free. 5/5

My go to takeaway. Yummy fish and chips and the portions are very good too. The price is also reasonable.

This honey chicken fried rice is like a great, hot, salty hug for my heart

Food isn't good. Came here often when I was studying architecture at Te Aro as I lived very close to the takeaway and had little money (student life) and time to go elsewhere. It wasn't gob-smack inedible but I was able to bear with it. <br/><br/>On a good note, the portion is big (like all takeaways), cheap and good value. And I must say, they do really good Honey Chicken. But that's about it. <br/>2/10 is the most I can give. <br/><br/>

Very disappointing - the chicken was way overcooked very dry. The fish was very greasy. The chips were ok, but not worth going there just for chips.

The best chips in Wellington, hands down. Trust me. They either do $3 or $5 bags, the $3 is good for one person and the $5 for 2!<br/>The donuts are pretty yummy too, and they’re cheap!<br/><br/>

Chicken chow mein the chicken was a bit like tofu but was defantly chicken ya know what i mean? <br/>I been here many times would i reconmend it yep i think most people come for the chips and chicken not the chinese food <br/>The chicken burger is typical takeaways burger but feels the gap for when im lazy and want to nom something good <br/><br/>Have to get gravy for ur chips and ask for lots of salt (i dont know if thats good advice)<br/> I do reconmend a vist good flavours

Not bad at all. Always goes there to buy chicken and vegetables which is really good. Overall it's not bad for a takeaway. I don't see why it's only got 2.5 rating.

Can't say I have tried any of the Chinese food here but I love their chicken and chips! 10 time better than anything you'd be getting from KFC. But still a reasonable price for good size portions.

I don't know why you have so many bad reviews. Your colossal burgers are the bomb and honey fried chicken is a big thumbs up as well. Keep it up

Worst food I've ever had.  Do not buy the wontons! They're disgusting.  It's like eating dried crepe paper that has been drenched in oil.  It's the closest chinese takeaways to where I live and the food is just not good.  I've tried lots of different things there to see if there's at least something there that I will like - the dumplings aren't too bad but everything else I've tried has been disappointing.  BBQ fried rice lacks flavour, fried chicken tastes like the chicken was rotten when it was cooked.  After trying the chicken I wasn't gonna bother with the fish, I just know that it wouldn't be fresh.  Sorry guys but hope the food improves.

We used to LOVE your fried rice and your other dishes were so/so but the closest we could get to the kind of chinese takeaways we like; but we havnt been in months and maybe you've got a new chef in that time?<br/><br/>The orange beef was almost inedible, it smelled so strongly of feet as soon as you opened the container that it put me off eating it straight away (my partner has a cold and couldnt smell it, so tried eating it any ways), I licked a piece to see if it at least tasted correct and, no joke, it was exactly like licking battery acid (which, I actually happened to do a few weeks ago, so the bitter, sour, zingy taste is still fresh in my memory), almost like you'd used citrus essential oils in the sauce or something lol. It was also so so spicy, I wouldnt have been able to eat it even if it didnt smell like feet (ive never had an orange beef be spicy, its normally a safely mild dish). My partner, who managed to eat some (mainly because we had spent money on it and it was all that was for dinner), said there was too much batter which made it taste stodgy, you normally expect a crispiness with orange beef, this has none. The new-style pottle had about 1/3rd as much meat again as it used to, more meat is normally a good thing, but in this case more meat didnt make it any more edible! Orange beef 0/10. Really disappointed.<br/><br/>The fried rice was nice, it has more veges then it used to have it in, and is more oily then it used to be (which I actually liked it being a bit wetter!). It was fine but didnt have that moreish smoky flavour your fried rice used to have that kept us coming back. Also, too many large shreds of cabbage, I kept finding myself stopping to chew for ages on big bits of cabbage. Shredded carrot was nice though and my partner was pleasantly surprised by several large shrimp/prawn things in the mix. The photo is a little misleading on the meat-front, it certainly had many good big chunks of meat, the photo was of the end of the rice, not the beginning because I forgot. Fried rice 6/10. Meh. Would eat if given some but probably wouldnt buy again with my own money.<br/><br/>You were our (only) go-to for chinese takeaways on this side of town, birthdays, special occasions, visitors, we always got your food.. now it looks like chinese takeaway is off our menu :(<br/><br/>Really disappointed, this was our treat this week and it was crap. My partners all sadface as he's been hanging out for orange beef for weeks now and this was such a let-down.

We ordered here a range of rings in a rush, the sweet and sour chicken fried rice was good but needed a bit more flavour, the kind prawn sweet and sour was amazing except the dough on the prawns tasted like doughnut dough? Batter mix up? It was so weird we pulled it off. The stir fried chop suey was delicious but small. Will return. No photos soz guys let you down 😔

Quite possibly the worst Asian food I have ever had. Have been three times with my boyfriend, each getting something different on every occasion. Trust me, the only reason we go is when it is pouring with rain and we can't be bothered walking into town. First thing we ever got was sweet and sour pork, absolutely no sauce mixed in with the rice, it was almost as if they had drained the pork of its sauce and then put it on the rice. Seafood mee goreng was the worst thing I have ever eaten from an Asian food place. The seafood was crab, squid and something else I couldn't quite tell. The crab was the ones you buy pre packed from a supermarket (surimi packs in seafood dept.) absolutely did not go with the flavours! Squid wasn't cut up, instead it was about four full tentacles all together - weird! Chips and chicken is greasy and tasteless. Burgers are not traditional burgers, more like sandwich rolls. Food is extremely tasteless but portions are rather large! Not worth the money.

For some reason I've found it hard to find a decent Chinese takeaway in Wellington CBD, usually they are either overpriced or the quality in general is quite miserable and depressing.<br/><br/>Interesting enough Li's surprised and surpassed my low expectations. We had a mixed egg-foo young, honey chicken and nasi goreng. The portions were massive, the meals had strong taste and there was heaps of meat in the nasi goreng and EFY.<br/><br/>I would recommend this place as one of the better Chinese takeaway stores in Te Aro<br/><br/>Showstopper: Honey chicken smelled like real honey and the taste was finger licking good.<br/><br/>Overall Grade: B+

Used to live just up the road from this place, the mi goreg is my personal favourite and is always on point! Burgers are also awesome! Definitely recommend

Love this place! Great service, the family that run the place are always really friendly. Always look forward to a tasty chicken fried rice from Li's. Food is cooked right in front of you! Definitely worth a chance and I'd definitely recommend!
