Review Thai On Tory - Wellington

Absolutely amazing place. Food is so fresh, and I love the idea of sharing plates. You get to try everything. Save some room for their gorgeous cocktails, so refreshing. Chow never disapoint. Prepare to be impressed!!

The staff here are incredible. We went on a night when pretty much every seat was full and everyone was run off thier feet, yet we still received fantastic service from our waitress. All the food arrived in a timely manner and was delicious. We particularly loved the squid!

Good service, the staff were really friendly. Bit overpriced for what you get in portion size. Food tasted good but average. Might not be ideal for dinner, but I would come back for lunch or just casual Friday night drinks.

My partner and I were lucky enough to win the date night at Chow! We had been wanting to visit since we arrived in Wellington and the food, service and atmosphere did not disappoint! I absolutely loved the Baos and the cocktails were to die for!! We loved it so much we are coming back this Sunday with family 🥰

What a great night! Place was packed but the food and drinks still came fast and was delicious! The staff were impressive to watch, all focussed and moving fast but still taking time to serve us all with a smile. Great food, cocktails, and service. Looking forward to my next night out.

One of my faves but this night didn't make the right choices in dishes. Should have stuck to the tried and true. Great cocktails and always love the service.

Chow has been consistently my go-to sharing plates restaurant for the last 20 years. The dishes are always good, there's a wide selection, including for those with dietary restrictions, and it's reasonably priced. Some of the tables are quite narrow, but I guess that helps to fit more people in.

Great little place to celebrate and try a variety of dishes. We had dinner to celebrate a mate graduating on Tuesday and they had 2 for 1 cocktails (Rosebud) which was great especially on a work night to share amongst the group. Between the four of us we spent approx. $75 each for food and drinks and we still had some of the food left😊

Had a lovely time on my own at chow, lots of veggie options! I had the Edamame, jackfruit bao bun and the cauliflower! It was maybe a bit much for one person but was all delicious:) also 2 for one cocktails on a Saturday!

Food was cooked well, with an outstanding menu on offer. I'm not sure the Indian fusion dumplings worked, however. The tempura cauliflower was the best! Means came out together, making it a crammed table for two. Cocktails were tasty and well worth the dollar. Staff were knowledgeable, helpful and very efficient.

Food was delicious and reasonably priced ish. Portions of the sharing plates are enough to feed one person themselves as a meal but multiple would be good for groups to pick at and try lots of different things. I had the roti chenai and the pork pancakes sharing platter and i found it all to be very delicious. The satay sauce is a must try regardless of what dish its with. Highly recommend for both solo diners and groups, but this place is perfect 1st or 3rd date material. So good. Will defi be back when im next in welly

Such a lovely experience dining here last night. Staff were really helpful and friendly, drinks were amazing (2 for 1 rose bud cocktails on Thursdays !) and all the food was really really good. Highly recommend the edamame and the dumplings.

The restaurant was awesome. Was abit dubious when I came up the stairs but was pleasantly surprised. The decor, lights ambience was great. Waiter very attentive and cocktail rosebud special were delicious. 2 for 1. The food was tasty, the sauce packed a good punch in the burger. Huge disappointment were the verges that appeared to be from frozen with a drizzle of sauce. Would not recommended and detracted from giving it 5 stars.

Having been back at Chows after years and been at a similar place the day before in direct comparison it falls behind. But this is a really great place with great food. Great quality and flavors. The pork pan cakes like Peking Duck are really good. The sauce seems to be a standard one, and that is what makes the difference and only 4 🌟 at the end.

Was lucky to have my Belated Mother's day lunch here & it did not disappoint! Coconut rice,Rice paper rolls, Fish cakes,Coffees, Vegetable curry,Corn fritters (almost all with either dipping sauces or added extras) Fav would have been the Fritters and Curry, 🤤😋 Fast lunchtime service Nothing Boring or Beige here! Always a deal to be had Clean Friendly efficient staff Nice n light seating with many options available Good coffee Thanks Highly recommend!!!

Service is always good they are quick to seat you if you have booked in advance. Food is pretty good it is sharing plate type of restaurant so you usually buy a few different dishes. Very yummy and always delicious.

The food was great, I have coeliacs and our waitress was super helpful in picking something that would be safe, recommending the chicken salad which was amazing. Great drinks, service and a great time. Waitress (young American girl) needs a pay rise.

Fish N Chips On Tory have a comprehensive menu and the prices, in my opinion, are better than reasonable. But when I saw Gemfish on their 'Fish of the Day' selection that was it for me. The price may seem a bit off-putting at first, but when you see what you get for that price you will see that it is well worth the money. And for me it was cooked to perfection. The generouse serving of chips was absolute value for money as well. I love fish and chips and rate Fish N Chips On Tory up there with the best I've had from a fish and chip shop. I was with two other family members who were highly complimentary of their meals as well.

Tried this place on a wet cold night - no too many fish & chip shops in welly cbd to pick from. Small nice pl. prices & combos reasonably priced for cbd. Had fish burger - big bit of fish, lettuce,n Mayo & chips. Try this pl if you jst want basic fish & chips that won’t break the bank.

I've tried a fair number of FnC shops around Wellington, and always come back to Tory St. Prices are similar to others. Potato fritters are in plentiful supply. They used to do great curry rolls, but they've changed supplier and they're disgusting. Their normal fish is tough and dry. I don't understand how people eat them. Thankfully when I've had a fillet they've been quite good. Always looks clean. They'd be 5* if they got the old curry rolls back and used fresh fish.

Visited for lunch, not busy which was good. Potato fritters were green and battered fish was very chewy and tough , not very nice to eat unfortunately

Wow, what amazing service from a friendly team. I had an unusual phone order for f & c for 28 children on a school trip from the Wairarapa. Not only did Wellington turn on the sun but these lovely owners also gave us a ride back to Frank Kitts park with the food. Thank you , Thank you.

Yay I like this place because every time I order 3 potato fritters they always give me like 7 so go u guys and the lady who works there is really nice and the vege burger is insane its like 5 potato fritters in it.

Their deep fried Mars bar was the bomb #awsome 👍
So coming back here next time but the scallops could have been cooked for a moment longer! But still it was a nice and enjoyable meal #fishandchipsbro👌

Love their fish and chips!! ❤️ for $11.50, you can receive two large pieces of battered fish and chips including a drink. Located on Tory it's so central. Been there a couple of times and the lady who serves at the main counter is always so courteous. Great value meals.

Went in after reading reviews raving about how it was very good. Maybe I expected too much but these are very average fish and chips. Not bad but not great. I got a chicken burger and was disappointed that they use chicken patties, not real chicken. Didn't end up finishing the burger and the chips are alright, the fish is very tough so I thought they use frozen fish instead of fresh ones.

This is a bit of a hidden treasure I feel, for the quality and size of the portions you get from here for such a cheap price it's got to be a Wellington favourite. GF is tricky as it would be at a fish n chip shop but ask the fish has no batter and grab chips and a hash-brown with other sides and you're good.

Why go to boutique fish and chip stores who basically over-price every item by twice its value, when you can buy the same quality and freshness here for half the cost? Good fish and chips, good range of classic kiwi sides.

What a great fish and chip shop. The crumbed fish was off the hook! I feel that a place that provides good value and nicely prepared food deserves a good review :)

Quick, easy, cheap and unhealthy. It doesn't have the quality of the mt. Vic chippy but for a quick snack this place will get the job done. They have a rather large menu to choose from and several meal deal options.

It's difficult to decide where to rate this particular establishment but as fast food goes it lies between J & M's and the mt, vic chippy.. A stoner paradise :)

Absolutely outstanding fish and chips. Every time we visit this fine establishment we are treated to crunchy chips, juicy moist fish, and lovely fat spring rolls.

But the true star of the show here is the saucy dog.
Simply put, 'FnC-on-Tory' do one of the best saucy dogs I've ever ingested. Hand battered by the staff, this dog is crunchy, delicious, and most importantly... SAUCY.
I usually struggle to wait until I arrive home before I start eating. And that's saying something because I only live minutes away. It is a testament to the quality of this hot dog that one of them has never seen the inside of my flat. It gets eaten on the street.

To the critics below who are giving bad reviews, I have this to say... Please ask your doctor refer you to a mouth specialist because your tongue is defective. The food on offer here is as good as you'll ever find this side of the equator and if you don't agree, you've gone wrong.

Thank you 'Fish-n-Chips on Tory'. Keep up the good work.
Katrina
I love a good meaty fish with thin crisp batter and that's exactly what I got today, not a long wait, chips were however just a bit dry, not a huge chip fan myself its just always weird getting fish n chips and not ordering chips sort of pointless. Overall I am pleased and will definitely go back for more.

I'm pretty over this place. I've been here 3 times and on 2 occasions ive been hugely disappointed.

The first time my fish was so oily, I ended up throwing it away. The chips were soggy. It was vile.

The second time I ordered crumbed fish instead which was much nicer and the chips were not so oily and soggy.

Tonight I decided to go again. I ordered crumbed fish but the girl behind the counter stuffed up my order so I got battered fish and it is VILE! I tried a mouthful and I actually feel quite nauseous at the moment. I've now thrown it away!

Won't be seeing me back there again!

We followed up the tip in the Wellington travel advisor and gave this business a try. We were certainly glad we did! Served by friendly Stewart our party was soon enjoying deliciously fresh cooked fish, chips, battered oysters and scallops. Simply the best fish and chips we have had in NZ. The price paid was simply amazing value and Aussies visiting Wellington should have at least one feed here!

Had previously enjoyed a delicious meal of fish and chips in November for great value.

However I have been left extremely disappointed by the lack of quality and service by Fish and Chips on Tory this past week.

The fish was oily, the chips were oily, undercooked and the curry rolls were not even cooked thoroughly and had to be reheated!

As for the service, I went in and ordered my food was told it would take approximately 10-15 minutes by the counter assistant. I returned 15 minutes later, yes, my order was cooked and ready, however another customer was holding on to it at the while waiting for his friends (I assume?).

Upon realising this mistake in the order, the assistant took fish and chips off this customer and gave it to me, to which as you would imagine everyone concerned would feel uncomfortable about this.....

Again this batch was oily and the saving grace was the hot dog.

It is a shame that so early in their venture, this business has let themselves down, where they can do so much better....

Come on Fish and Chips on Tory...Pull your socks up!!!!

The best value family meal around. Chips not greasy portions generous premises clean. Service quick. Parking not bad can always pop into Moore Wilson's after placing order. The fish fllets did not smell fishy. Good selection of fish. Nice to children while we waited

Best in town - value and quality.

I have seen this one setting up for a while but I did not realise it had opened until today (Labour Day Monday).
I would not normally buy fish on a Sunday or a holiday, as it is not normally the freshest, but I was curious about a new shop not having found a good shop since Supreme in Hataitai burnt down.

I was really impressed. The fish was excellent, fresh and both the crumbed and battered was great. Other shops have crumbed just as good as this but this batter would be the best I have had in years.

We also had a hot dog and pineapple fritter, the pineapple fritter was a little small and I was a tad unhappy with this until I found they had given me two fritters – Excellent value and service.

I had a $2.50 coffee from a machine while the order was being made, better than I expected, in fact better than the some of the "real" cafes in town (and probably everything in Auckland).

Overall great food, the chips were well cooked and not at all greasy. The fish batter was light and crisp. Servings were the most generous I have had in living memory and the total bill for four adults and three children was just on $50, great value.

Obviously a brand new shop everything was really clean and tidy with bar stools and magazines to wait or eat at and a couple of tables outside. While still just opened there were no salads on offer yet – but this is just a good excuse to go back again soon to try some greens out.
