Review Piccolo Italian Pizzeria - Wellington

Penny Easton
Gorgeous wee place with friendly staff who went the extra mile for us, even giving us a complimentary pizza while we waited. Delicious pizzas which were amazing the next day too! Will definitely be back when we come back to Wellington, and dine in next time.

10/10 will go everytime I visit Wellington. The one individual working the night me and my brother visited (3 times now) is the sweetest oler gentleman we had ever met. The music playing in the background coupled with the unique decor gave off an old school, tavern like atmosphere which felt very comfortable in despite being on the city's outskirt. The food was good but the atmosphere was better, keep it up guys!

What a lovely night! A perfect spot to have a really good chat with friends and also good quality food. I loved the atmosphere. Well done to my husband for spotting this wee cutie of a restaurant.

First time here in Wellington and so glad to end up dining in Piccolo. Cozy place and Food is delightful! Best pizza and lasagne we’ve had so far. Would definitely recommend this place.

This tiny wee spot isn't the flashiest but the food was fantastic. The night we went it was just one person looking after everything. We had the ravioli Della Nonna, garlic bread and beef lasagne with some Montepulciano & it was all fantastic. Will definitely be back

Wonderful pizza and the owner was so so friendly. The restaurant was close to our hotel and after a day of walking we were happy that we didn’t have to walk so far.
Matt Powell
A hidden gem of wellington, friendly service, with a quiet but comfortable atmosphere. Will definitely be back soon!

I enjoyed my vegetariano pizza with thin and crisp slices. But the cosy atmosphere is really everything you need.

Eaten here twice. The pastas are great. The lasagne was delicious.

Spinach lasagna has hit perfectly everytime I've had it delivered. Can't wait to come into the store and have a sit down meal.

I swear to Allah, if you want to find a genuine GOOD comforting taste of pizza, ITS THIS PLACE. The little-cottage atmosphere is really what hits the nail in this restaurant. Highly recommend for those that want a quiet me-time under a warm light, or to impress your date in a restaurant built for the two!

Il Piccolo is, without a doubt, my favourite place to eat. The furnishings are adorable, the staff are friendly, and the food is DIVINE. I cannot overstate how good the food here is. I have never been left unsatisfied by a meal here (although I don't think they have any vegan options) I have been hesitant to recommend Il Piccolo publicly only because it's a small restaurant and I almost don't want others to know about it. It has been a standout favourite with everyone I have taken there, and despite its size, I have never seen it too busy. They seem to make more business from takeout than dine-in, so there always seem to be free tables and they're always happy to reserve a table for you if you phone them.

The pizzas are amazing! I personally think they are some of the best in Wellington, especially the stromboli pizza. My fav😍. Hell's pizza doesn't have anything on Piccolo's pizzas😏🤷🏾‍♀️

Best Spag bol I've ever had. Ended up here late one night and he was kind enough to keep the restaurant open for us. Go and support this Fella and his brilliant food!

Nice little eatery, yummy lasagne, mind your fingers on the bowl when you get it. Very hot :)

Food was pretty poor, frozen pizza and supermarket bought pasta sauce plonked on top of some ravioli, edible but not authentic in any way.

That little warm place with touch of Italian culture.
The food and service were genuinely good and up to my expectations. I enjoyed being there on rainy day, being hungry in front of Pizza and Pasta!
However, I will go back to this place for Garlic bread!😁

We loved the ambience in this place, it is so cosy. The meals are great value for money. The tomato and basil soup was delicious. My husband said the pizza was great too.

Fantastic place for a relaxing meal with friends. Very intimate.
Would rate this higher is possible.
Great value too. BYO. Small but classic wine list.

Can't give a five star review because I only ordered a take away so I don't know what the in house experience is like. Pasta was simply awesome. Needed more of the 'veggie' side of things however. If I order mushroom, or in my wife's case, tomato pasta, especially for an Italian place, I expect it to be loaded with the vegetables that it says it provides, but this was a little disappointing. Didn't spoil the meal. Tasted good enough to go back. Would recommend for takeaways!

The restaurant itself is very cute and small. I wouldn't go here for authentic Italian cuisine, the carbonara wasn't a actually carbonara, wayyy too much cream... some people like that though... also the pizza was pretty mediocre compared to the amazing pizza you can get at several other places in wellington. Nothing too wrong with the place - it was just very average..

Oh my, where to begin? First of all, I was so impressed that the waitress asked for my name early on, albeit it turned out she said 'mains?' And not 'name?' But I felt like she really wanted to know my name, you know? And she only mildly laughed at my expense, so we're definitely best friends now I'd assume. I managed to see into the kitchen at one point and noticed a giant bottle of Masterfoods Hickory Smoked BBQ sauce, you know it's authentic with Masterfoods Hickory Smoked BBQ sauce hanging about. There's really only two obvious choices here, dope pizza or dope pasta. I went with the pizza because it felt more in line with the fact that I was wearing a tee shirt in a nice restaurant, but when all the meals came out and I saw the pasta... I'm not gonna lie, I quietly resented the waitress for not predicting my regret and talking me into pasta. It's 24 hours later and I'm still thinking about that pasta I didn't eat. I have so many regrets in my life, and not getting the pasta may be the most painful. I need some time to think.

So overwhelmingly disappointed with my last visit. Pizza size has shrunk by A LOT, asked for no chili, got tons of it, the food is incredibly basic but not in a good way like it used to be, you can really tell how cheap the owner is, they skimp on everything. Mushroom Penn pasta had about three wafer thin slices of mushrooms in the whole thing.

We dined here on Friday at 6 p.m. using a Grab One voucher. The waitress was very welcoming and genuinely friendly. We were seated and water quickly brought to the table with menus. Our 1st choice of wine was not available but on enquiring as to the taste of the house italian white we were offered a sample to try. I have never had that done in any other resturant before!! The voucher was for 1 entree to share(garlic pizza bread) which was tasty and a mai
n each. We were both pleased with the tastiness of our dishes Spaghetti Bolognase and Spaghetti Salmon which were served piping hot. Portion sizes were just right. We both chose the buconove for dessert which went down well. I would have preferred the tiramasu but they were sold out of it. Slightly disappointing given the time of our booking but what we had was still very nice. The overall ambiance I would describe as rustic and welcoming. Menu prices were fair as were the drinks prices, so overall a very enjoyable experience and we would go back.

You (like me) have probably passed by Il Piccolo a number of times and never really noticed it. Or you thought "how quaint" and "I should try that place one day".

So after 6 years in Wellington, yesterday I decided to give it a try. I booked a table for 8pm and arrived to the slowly emptying 14 seater italian trattoria. Its true that everyone eats between 6 and 8 in Wellington.

First impression, "I've stepped back in time to old Italy", complete with some strange pieces of decor that doesn't quite belong. I like that feeling. Sorry, I forgot to take pictures.

The waitress was lovely and the food generally pretty good. My partner and I shared the bread with tomato sauce to start, the lasagna and ravioli for mains, and the tiramisu for dessert.

The bread was hot, soft on the inside, crunchy on the outside, and topped with parmesan. It paired nicely with a rich tomato pesto sauce.

The pasta dishes were good enough but nothing to write home about. Unlike Cicio Cacio in Newtown, I don't think the pasta is made fresh in house daily. But the portion sizes were decent and the flavours traditional. You can't really go wrong with pasta, sauce, and cheese (lots if cheese).

The tiramisu was the highlight of the night. A small slice of nicely balanced sponge, mascarpone, cream, chocolate, and coffee. Not perfect but tasty nonetheless.

Overall an enjoyable dining experience. Worth the $35 voucher price but I probably wouldn't pay the full menu price. TBH I expected more from the small family restaurant.

Omg!!!!The food was so awesome and the service was the best. They made my birthday really special😘😘.Would definitely go there again.Has become my favorite spot for Italian food

Rang and booked a table and we were seated right by the window. The restaurant had a wonderful vibe, we felt like we were in Italy. The service was great and the food was excellent! We ordered the pesto bread (freshly baked) as a starter. For mains we had the manzo pizza and ravioli, they were both very tasty. For dessert we had the chocolate gelato and bucaneve, both were excellent and very flavourful. Overall, it was a delicious meal and we'll be back.

Has to be one of the best when comes to food. Food is simple and tasty no decorations. Decently priced with old italian set up. Must try out place

Came in for dinner with my partner late at night. The restaurant it's self is a beautifully small intimate place with a lot of character. The food is what you pay for, don't expect fresh made pasta or desserts but it is a good place for a good priced Italian meal
Paris Lee-fairbrother
Honestly the best Italian I have tasted, decent prices and the ravioli is seriously to die for!!!!! Brought a starter pizza and it was perfectly seasoned

This hidden little gem is worth visiting. Lovely girl who served us. Superb pizza and pasta. I cannot fault this place. Price is great. Food is excellent. It is very small so it would pay to book. Would definitely recommend to others and dine here again.

Really enjoyed my meal. Will definitely go again. The waitress was very friendly and accommodating. I had the creamy mushroom penne - delicious

My boyfriend and I went here and was very pleased with the food and atmosphere. We had the salmon pasta dish and the chicken and cranberry pizza. Both dishes were simple but tasty. I went here not expecting a 5 star quality experience but was still happy nevertheless. The ladies were friendly an helpful without being OTT. I'm definitely getting the chocolate Gelato again too.

Gorgeously cute and cosy mama's style restaurant! No frills, just yummy pizza and pasta. If you are expecting top quality olives and condiments, this is not the place. But, price is right for a decent Italian feed!

Bought a pizza from here one day. It wasn't extraordinary but definitely edible so that was great. Not sure I would return. They do run good deals on their boards.

I believe this place is actually called Il Piccolo. It is very tiny. The best seats in the house are at the table in the window. We were seated right by the counter near the doorway into the kitchen. The decor is very eclectic - not exclusively Italian in theme. The pizzas are no different from any pub wood-fired oven jobby - I was expecting more given the Italianess of the place - but they were priced correctly. I would go back for a romantic evening with the right person, as it does have that sort of ambience.

After reading the reviews here we were a little sceptical about booking a table at Il Piccolo. However, we were pleasantly surprised! What a gorgeous little restaurant! After a recent trip to Italy, I was very impressed at how authentic Il Piccolo is and how much it felt like we were dining in a little pizzeria in Rome. The food is delicious, the price very reasonable and the service fantastic. Four out of the six in our group ordered pizzas, which were very tasty, and two ordered pasta, which they enjoyed. I recommend the dipping bread with sundried tomato olive oil as a starter, just beautiful! Desserts not amazing, but let's face it, you don't necessarily dine out at Italian for the desserts. We thoroughly enjoyed our Il Piccolo experience and will definitely be returning.

Very tasty gourmet pizza! friendly people, very warm and cozy, nice designs and ornaments which are interesting to look at and had a great welcoming experience! I loved the deserts (tiramisu and sorbet) will definitely be coming back here soon!

Absolutely the worst experience of my life hands down!
The man who runs this restaurant is a homicidal maniac who could not be more sick in the head if he tried. The food may as well be seasoned with dish washing liquid as that is what it tastes like. Never ever go there. The positive reviews are clearly written by them as no one on earth would describe it as a gem. Revolting!

This little gem of a dining experience is exactly what I had in mind, when seeking an intimate, quiet, charming Italian dinner. We dined with no reservation confirmation, since we made the reservation only one hour in advance, on Good Friday. No problem. The service was very attentive, gracious, and timely, and the food is better than I had expected. Our garlic pizza bread was light, crispy, and eaten with smiles on our faces. The salad was cold, crispy, and full of extra touches. My pasta carbonara was also heavenly. I only wished that the parmesan were not the powdery kind.
We will return. Thank you, Piccolo Cafe.
Cynthia

I visited this restaurant for the first time tonight and absolutely loved it. The service is attentive and quick; the orders were taken promptly and the meals came out quickly. All of the dishes we had were divine and the servings were generous (ravioli = DELICIOUS!) I loved the decor as well, it is intimate, welcoming and everything is beautifully put together. A great experience, I can't wait to go back. Minestrone next time!

Just rang up at 1pm asking if I could make a reservation for tonight (albeit optimistically since it is valentines day)

The owner simply hung up on me after I asked, didn't even bother to reply.

I rang back thinking maybe it was an accident, as soon as I asked if there was any possibility of making a reservation I was hung up on again!

I can't speak for the quality of the food, because I didn't even manage to get in the door, but I'm willing to guess the other negative reviews are right on the mark.

Absolutely terrible service! The food was nice but the woman who appeared to own the restaurant was the rudest person I have ever met. It is a small restaurant that only seats 14. We were a group of six and when we asked to pay for what each of us had (as some people ate and drank more than others) we were told it was too difficult and we had to split the bill six ways. She charged us $28 each, which we paid, but then calculated and realised the bill only came to $27 each. I raised this with the woman, who immediately became agressive, firstly implying that it was fair because she'd provided good service, and then getting more agressive and telling me I was drunk and should have a glass of water. She said she would give me $5 back (even though that was still overcharging us) and I told her that I didn't want her money, but it is the principle that you don't blantantly overcharge your customers and then abuse them for mentioning this. This was an unfortunate end to the night, as the food and atmosphere were nice, but we will definitely not be going back there or recommending it to anyone.
Good Food, Good Times
Took a group of 12 in total tonight and absolutely loved our time at Il piccollo! 10 out of 12 from our group have an intellectual disability and Barry was extremely welcoming and kind to everyone. I'm also quite the food snob... The food was delish! I tried the ravioli, magarita and seafood pizza all yummy and all great value for $16. Lastly - awesome music and the cutest lil place.
Thank you for such a great evening for our last night in Wellington! Nicola from Recreate NZ

As cute as a button with great food and atmosphere. Pretty cheap but with good quality food on offer. We had the garlic bread where I could have licked the crumbs off the plate it was so good! The pastas and pizzas my table ordered all were delicious and filled hungry tummies. A bonus being BYO. Don't expect full on attentive service but the couple that run it are a charming authentic Italian couple. I would definitely go back. Just book a table as it is a tiny restaurant.

AMAZING! This is one great restaurant!
My partner and I went to Piccolo Willis St for a romantic dinner for my birthday. It was the perfect setting for a romantic night out. The service was excellent and the food was unbeatable. The taste, the smells, the atmosphere - it made us feel as though we were actually in Italy. I would recommend this place to anyone. Just make sure you book in advance as it is very small the tables fill up pretty quick. I will definitely be returning.

We went to Piccolo tonight for the first time, a little dubious after reading some of the reviews on here. Contrary to the feedback, it was excellent! It was cute, the service was unintrusive, the ambience was appropriate, the food and service were exceptional. We would recommend it, it's a shame to see people's perceptions are influenced so heavily by one person's negative encounter. Great value for money, you get the true Italian experience.

Where do I start....
As soon as we got there the waiter was rude about our booking joking that we would have to pay $1 per question we asked. It took a long time for the menus to arrive at our table, the food was VERY average. We ordered pizzas which were very bland and plain, the lasagne was very small and cheaply made not worth $16 at all!!! Just bits of small lasagne mixed with a tiny amount of mince. (I could make way better at home!) One of our group was short changed by $11 (didnt fully realise till we left) but didnt really want to go back after our experience with the rude owner/waiter.
Also we found it very inappropriate that the owner had a table of friends that arrived after us and were served right away. One of us answered a phone call and the table of friends were extremely rude and embarrassed us in front of the entire restaurant.
The owner/waiter was very patronising throughout the evening and even though it is a BYO restaurant we felt uncomfortable to drink and talk amongst ourselves.

We had a terrible experience at this restaurant. The waitress had very poor customer service, then tried to overcharge us for the meal. When we pointed it out, she abused us and refused to budge. She then got her manager on the phone and he abused us some more, despite the fact that we were being polite and reasonable. In the end we just paid for what we had ordered, and we were told that we were cheapskates (even though we had definitely exceeded the minimum charge per person). It was unbelievable - we couldn't believe that such extremely rude and abusive people could be running a restaurant. We will never be going back, and I would recommend staying away from this place.

Amazing home cooked Italian food in a fantastic small and friendly restaurant. Mama does the cooking and papa serves it. Great Great great atmosphere loved it. If you want great home cooked Italian food in a none pretentious cafe this is a must.
Mark
A lovely tiny little restaurant, filled with Italian curios. Only seats about 12 in total but the space and decor make for an environment that is most charming. The food is modest in price with a meal sized pizza only costing $15. Great Italian wines to compliment solid, if not exceptional food add up to a place well the visit.

Others have commented on the speed of service, I have never found it a problem...
Ben
What a wonderful little place. Snuck in before the crowd(only a small place but better if not so many people). Food was great, tasty and simple, the way pizza should be. Arrived on time and cooked to perfection. Get the window seat if you can. Very recommended
Melissa Turner
I loved it! Absolutely delicious food, fab rich decor and reasonable prices. What more can you ask!

Teeny-tiny but can add to the atmos - pays to book ahead as popular venue with locals from surrounding apartments. Beautiful cassata icecream, recommend!

I had never even heard of Il Piccolo before we were invited by a friend to try it. It's a tiny little place with only a handful of tables. We were one of two groups of six in the restaurant, and there was only room for another table of two. It's licensed for BYO with a $5 per bottle charge. The others in our group had arrived before us, and already ordered starters, so we skipped straight to the mains. I ordered cabonara, while my partner chose the spaghetti bolognese. The portions were decent sized, and really good value for money - priced at just $16 per main. We both thoroughly enjoyed our meals, as did everyone else in the group. It's been a few years since I was in Italy, but from what I remember the meals were very authentic.
I'd definitely recommend this restaurant - and I'd also recommend booking!
