Review Bordeaux Bakery And Brasserie - Wellington

I had the eggs Benny & asked for it to be on a soft toast rather than the usual hard toast. And it wasn't a problem at all. Was really nice surprise to see the beautiful thick chunks of ham off the bone when it arrived.

Got a range of their sweet stuff to share and they were all delicious. A bit on the pricey side though.

Wow this place is incredible! Mariana (the person serving us) was spot on for what she recommended to my husband and I 🏳️‍🌈 with all of the deliciousness there is here 🙌 We got the Cajun chicken sandwich (toasted), the beef Reuben, blackberry tart 🤤 Mariana def knew her stuff, was SO nice, and incredible customer service and product knowledge 🤩🥳 Thank you Bordeaux for such a wonderful experience this morning! 🥰🥰🥰

Great experience at this cafe. Had the eggs benedict with ham. The thick cut ham off the bone was delicious and the eggs were perfect. Finished this off with the French vanilla doughnut which was amazing!

It's been a long time since I had a bite to eat here. Still good food though. Very busy place, so this tells me that people know what good food is all about. We had 2 chocolate eclairs, very rich. A delicious quinoa and beetroot salad, and a toasted sandwich... but used a baguette. The female server was super efficient, and friendly. My friend bought a sourdough loaf to takeaway. Will definitely come again when I am out this way. Cheers 😍

We grabbed some sandwiches, a Niçoise and a Cajun Chicken, to go along with a small Duchess cake. All three things were delicious and good value for the money. It made for a beautiful picnic in the Botanical Gardens. With more time, I would have joined their coffee club to get the complimentary canelé with the 11th coffee.

Was yummy but what ruined the experience was when I asked if I could have some cream to go with the small slice of cake at $8.70, I was given a horrified look and told immediately 'NO'. This look, the tone and the negative no to what I thought was a small request really surprised me. If this were my establishment, I would tell the customer absolutely and give a warm friendly smile. After all, I'd like customers to come back. But this response was what we spoke about as we took our seats and when we go in the car. A small request could've really topped off our visit but, not sure I will come again. 😟

I love Bordeaux Bakery. The simple baguettes and croissants taste amazing here, you won’t regret buying them.

I’ve been a long time customer of Bordeaux Bakery, always popping in to get their French doughnuts (aka cronuts) which are a hit in my family. I’ve also loved had their cabinet food in various occasions and loved the flavours. So we were pretty excited when we had a morning off and could order breakfast here. Unfortunately, we were left super disappointed. While our full breakfasts were well presented and made interesting with the fries, the meal fell short of our expectations. The food was lukewarm and undercooked. For $26 a meal, we were disappointed. The coffee was the only positive aspect of our visit. I would have given only three stars, but perhaps they were having a bad day in the kitchen or other factors due to COVID. Plus I know their other food is good, this the four stars. I’ll be back, but will stick to getting food from the cabinet and their pastries.

Delicious French pastry treats, pies, salads, and cafe items. An amazing range of French inspired sweets and a cabinet of savoury rolls and panini that the staff will toast for you. A small selection of salads. Good coffee.

Nice food here. I had a pie which was quite nice. Mince and mozzarella. My partner had a chicken pie, it was delicious too.

A lovely bakery with huge space to sit. Great staffs and quick service. Creme brûlée was really nice. The rye sourdough was on point. Great selection of cabinet foods. Will definitely come back again

no faults here came to this bakery as I wait for my embassy appointment spacious place very factory like as they are very busy crazy how busy this place gets but very manageable a lot of choices just a personal preference that the tarts are a bit too sweet and the tart shells didn't tasted very fresh nonetheless we enjoyed our food and drinks here clean place and friendly service

I use their stall at the Lower Hutt market each weekend. Good quality products.

We usually order take away here. The BEST Nicoise sandwich ever! I also love the Bayonne ans well as the chicken baguette. They used to have a duck baguette, which is sorely missed. A great selection of sweets and cakes as well as some okay bread. But the sweets and the ready made sandwiches and baguettes really stand out. They are very expensive, but if I get a good taste for it, I am happy to pay extra for it. The offer some coking as well as some crepes, which I never have tried.

Excited about visiting the Cafe as it has been some time since I was in Wellington. Slow service, and a couple of the staff didn't seem to know what they were doing when asked questions about what was in a small roll and a Duchess cake. Ordered those and a chicken pie and 2 coffees. Waited and waited and my friend ate her roll and her cake. I then ate half my Duchess and drank my coffee. After about 25 minutes my pie finally arrived but I had to ask the young guy if he would put it in a box for me to take away and the half a Duchess into a paper bag as I no longer had time to eat them. When he came back with it he had put everything including the salad into the same box. Fine with the pie but the Duchess wasn't happy! Threw it out! I felt really disappointed with the whole dining experience.

Heard about this place so paid my visit.
Donut was okay but pricy. Latte is expensive compared to other places. Coffee was made by a young part-timer so temperature was not right. I see many old people perhaps due to easy to park. There are many better places. For me nah... Will not come back.

Located along the main road of Thorndon Quay. Good vibe, friendly staff but a bit overpriced. I ordered a steak and kidney pie which cost $7.20 which comes with a bit of coleslaw and a mocchacino. The pie was good and filling but $7.20 is a bit over the top and $5.00 for moccachino. Just convenient where I was yesterday...few selections of slices and cakes. Not all food cabinet was full, one was empty. Not a good look at all. Warm and cozy cafe.....

Just ordered an almond croissant that was completely disgusting and obviously a couple of days old. Feels like eating cardboard. Coffee (latte) is ok.
Jocelyn Simpson
The food on display looks good and the staff are polite and friendly. Unfortunately I ordered a duck roll, it tasted like chicken not duck and the bun/french stick was not fresh. Very disappointed.

Went there for breakfast on sat. A good display of cakes and baked goodies. However I was quite disappointed with the food I ordered. The scrambled eggs were way too running-almost to the point of not eatable. The coffee was the worst I have had in Wellington-considering it is a French cafe the coffee should be at least above average. If I do visit this place I will skip the menu and takeaway some cakes only.

Soggy and disappointing...

It seemed a good idea, stopping at a bakery for lunch. And walking in (from the cold and wet) the Bordeaux Bakery was warm, with that awesome smell that all bakeries have.

As a fan of the Croque Madame, ordering was easy - and surely this would be a great eat (it is a French venue after all).

But no. It was disappointingly soggy!

A shame really. But not to worry... Wellington has so many other places to go to instead.

My partner and I stopped for brunch Saturday 4th May ordering French Toast and Corn Fritters, Unfortunately this was the worst brunch served in Wtgn as I regularly dine out. Both dishes must have been prepared very early on /refrigerated for a long period of time - the corn fritters were served crumbled and cold. The French toast bread had stuck together, cold with only slither of bacon, rotten (half) of a banana and also cold. This is not the first time over the past year I've been served unsatisfactory / disappointing food from Bordeaux but thought would give them another chance. The service from the front line staff however was great its unfair of the owners for the waiters/waitresses to have to bear the brunt because of poor quality food.

A large and wide selection of sweets, breads and filled rolls greets you on arrival. Plenty of seating is also available and you'll likely find seating even during busy times.

The cafe/bakery has something of a monopoly on account of not having any competition any near. That is probably why the service delivery of services is pretty awful. When busy, it's not unusual to wait up to 25 minutes for someone as simple as a single coffee. Not clear if that is because of slow-performing barristas or poor delivery system. Either way, it's poor.

Bought the nicely and timely made breakfast which costed me around $21. It was filling and good and the order did not take that long. In my opinion this is a little steep considering what was given in plate. The price for muesli isn't too good either.

The place looked busy and clean.

Came here for cake and hot chocolate a little while ago. This place does have some good food and glorious, crusty bread. I had a mango cheesecake and a hot chocolate. The cheesecake was creamy and fruity and was delicious. I did find a small hair in it though. Normally, I would have made a fuss, but I was in a bit of a rush. The hot chocolate was overly sweet. The service here is average. The lady behind the counter was friendly but we had to ask for water and spoons because she hadn’t directed us to them. Little things like this are important. I actually used to come here all the time for the bread, and I would still come here for that, but I think I’ll pass on the hairy cheesecake in future.

overpriced, very average food and terrible coffee. I don't usually write reviews, but felt compelled as this place left us feeling hungry and ripped off

Popped in for breakfast on a Saturday morning about 9.30am. The cafe was fairly busy with a few families.

There are plenty of options on the brunch menu, however there are no gluten free substitutes. I understand this is primarily a bakery and yummy bready treats are their specialty but food allergies are prevalent and this may put people off going there. Hence my lower score.

I was able to get an omelette with no bread. It was filling but nothing special. My partner had bacon and eggs on sour dough. Compared to other places, the value for money is questionable. Coffee was drinkable.

I ordered a BLAT and a hot chocolate and both were disappointing. The hot chocolate was watery and flavourless and the avocado was obviously unripe - hard and chewy. The tables are giant so it doesn't have a very intimate atmosphere for dining in either.

Took over 15 mins for two takeaway drinks, to which both of them were poorly made. The long black with a dash of cream that my friend ordered was made half full with a dash of foamed milk... When we corrected the barista and asked if they could make another one, the foamed milk was removed and replaced with a serious amount of cream into a now cold coffee. The chai latte I ordered was near cold and full of syrup.

While we waited for our coffee another staff member ordered, was served and also drank their takeaway coffee.

The staff seemed confused and the cafe was generally very untidy.

What a load of rubbish the breakfast menu is- I ordered the corn fritters which were made from red capsicum, flour and about 10 kernels of corn. They were pre cooked and reheated to order- just awful. Left them- no wait staff that care about anything. My partner ordered poached eggs on toast- how can two tiny eggs be that small and rubbery?

An older cafe now that could do with a bit of a tidy up to be fair. I think the food is good, but the service is not so good. You will wait and meals will turn up on their lonesome one by one. It seems to me that their are just not enough staff on with some doing front of house and creating the meals.

But, if you want decent food and a good coffee along with a massive selection of excellent takeaway cafe food (awesome rolls), then this is perfect.
Kat
This place used to be my favourite, but it has gone down hill a lot lately. Their pastries used to be fresh, delicious and decadent and the service was friendly and efficient. Now days the food tastes like it's been frozen, and the service is brash and slow. It's such a shame, it used to be so good.

I won't be going back.
Adarsh Jupudi
I frequent this place for lunch sandwiches and the chocolate eclair! I would definitely suggest this place if you are in the vicinity and need a sweet tooth satisfied and a light lunch.

Terrible and slow service for takeaway. Took them 15 minutes just to make a flat white on a quiet Sunday morning... It also seemed expensive for what it was.
I went to Bordeaux Bakery with my family early this month for lunch. It was a Sunday.
I feel it necessary to leave a review because never have I been witness to such poor service. After placing our order we went upstairs to find a table. After an unusually long wait, our food arrived but not our drinks. The waitress asked if we were waiting for anything else as she tried to take our number away. We explained that we were still waiting for a long black and a coke. We also saw the table next to us only receive one persons order and not the other, also missing their drinks. We had long finished eating and the waitress kept delivering single items of orders to various tables and we finally got the coffee but still no coke. After telling the waitress again that we were still waiting on one drink, who I believe was the manager then came up and rudely asked who served us because it was likely we hadn't been given the coke because we hadn't been charged for it. We assured her that we were definitely charged for it and she went away again. After another ridiculous wait, I went down to find out what was happening as she never came back. The man who served me couldn't remember and then the manager started giving the staff member a hard time. This is probably the worst part of our experience. Yes there was a major delay and yes the order and service wasn't perfect but the fact that the manager was rude to us and then her staff, all in front of other customers is disgraceful. We used to enjoy Bordeaux Bakery, on Thorndon Quay and at the market every Sunday, perhaps that manager needs to review the way she treats her staff and customers.

How does this place survive? Words cannot describe my experiences at this eatery.
The Bordeaux brand obviously conveys a veneer of sophistication to many people as if it is the "desirable" place to be seen. I have gone to the Bordeaux on Thorndon Quay for over 5 years now based entirely on the convenient location and I assume this why it seems well patronised. Due to the convenience factor I have tolerated consistently bad service from a series of blank-faced front of house staff members.
My repeat custom (and that of my many friends and colleagues) has never been recognised or acknowledged. Today was my last day to ever visit this establishment after my Latte was presented more like a milk shake, dropped on the table by the barrister without a word of thanks and the contents spilled into the saucer without even an apology.

Given its location I can only hope the proprietors make serious efforts in re-establishing some goodwill. Perhaps employ a front of house manager who is able to engage with their customers and make the experience what it should be - enjoyable!

This experience was farcical to say the least if I could give 0 stars I would. I ordered a steak sandwich and an iced chocolate for over $20 and received a sawn off French stick cut in half with a piece of steak roughly 10 x 3 cm in size hidden amongst a buttery mushroom substance that must have been full of sugar it was disgusting (A 3 year-old could have made something with more imagination). They then provided a blunt knife and couldn't provide a steak knife when I asked for one. The bread was so hard it was impossible to eat let alone cut with a knife and the accompanying salad soggy and warm-ish. The meat was stringy and to top it off the iced chocolate was luke-warm (how they messed up on that I have no idea...) and the service was non-existent just people waiting for you to hand over your money; the only positive about this place is its appearance, which obviously is what suckered me inside to be absolutely ripped off.

Two years ago I used to take away sandwiches all the time from here but all of a sudden every sandwich I took was either frozen from the inside, or old material, or missing elements.
Today I was around and hungry so decided to check if things got better, and ordered 2 sandwiches. One was fine, the other was old- cheese was hard on the outside, mayo was sour, and it just tasted bad. It's in the garbage now, where it belongs.
Very disappointed and it's a shame because they used to be a good place.

Unfortunately we got trapped here while waiting for the AA. As usual the service was terrible, we had to repeat our order three times as the waitress kept talking to her friends in between getting out things. On top of that the ceasar salad was revolting. Over dressed, wilted, and cheese that tasted like it came out if a bag. Certainly not Parmesan.

Myself and my partner had only 1hr for lunch, which under normal circumstances should be more than enough time for cafe food. I ordered a salad, which was nothing special. My partner ordered the chicken and a side of fries to share.

After about 20 minutes we started to look around wondering when our food would arrive. A waitress clearly could pick up on our body language but had made a consensus decision to ignore as. After 30 minutes still no food.

At this stage I approached the counter to ask why our order had not arrived, I got a blank stare from a fairly rude waiter. He then told me the docket had not been fed through to the kitchen but it shouldn't be to long. He then offered me a refund which I gladly accepted. After waiting a further 10 minutes I asked where our food was and to my shock the order had been canceled as i had accepted the refund. I still had not received any refund.

As you could imagine I was fairly pissed off at this point so demanded for my money back...after yet another 5 minutes of three retarded employees trying to work the refund function of the til I only got my money back for the food we had not received. We were given a free coffee card yet we left hungry and very angry.

Poor service!!!!

What is happening to you? The worst Caesar salad ever last week and this week you couldn't heat vol-au-vent because you had a table of nine. Get it together please

I ordered a sandwich for lunch. The sign said the sandwich had cheese. When I bit into it there was no cheese.
The manager told me I could choose something else. I told her I was fine if they just gave me a slice of cheese to put on. The chef argued with myself and the manager stating that the sandwich did not include cheese and I would have to take it as is even though the sign said it was a cheese sandwich.
There was next to nothing on the bread - a tiny leaf of spinach, a few nuts and a spot of cranberry sauce.
Bad attitude and bad food

Doesn't start out too flash - as I prefer to have the order taken at the table. But once you order and grab a table you're on your way. I had a Bordeaux Breakfast with two brekkie sausages two strips of bacon two poached oozy (just the way I like them) eggs on sourdough toast oh and a cooked tomato. There was a hollandaise sauce... I managed to clear the plate, while the family had equally good eggs, and one of us went for a crepe..... All and all very good and I'd go back again.

How to say?

This is just bad! I went there in the afternoon to have a lunch, coffee and pastries. It was so disappointed for me as I am French. The service is poor (people are not smiling) and the food taste like nothing good. I had a veg pie and it was disgusting.

The pastries were average, nothing special. And the baguette sorry again but bad tasting. This not the bread I know from France for sure.

The coffee was ok though.

One advice if you really want to taste something good about French food go somewhere else or just go to France.
Vincent G
Has turned bad over the last few years. Started off with a bang, great coffee and pastries

But their pastries have turned into mainstream, run of the mill crap. And their coffee has gone downhill too
Donny Chai
I was in the mood for pies, and I had the vegetarian one which was a very big disappointment. What it consisted of was burnt & dried up pieces of vegetables (on the top side) with very bland tasting vege fillings on the inside. I actually had to add salt to eat it as I felt I had paid so much money for this and I felt bad to waste food. It is edible but that pie needs a complete re-work.

Their other rolls/sandwiches tasted OK, nothing really out of the ordinary. The prices for them are way too expensive and I couldn't really see the value of what I was paying for. I don't mind paying more for something really good but I felt I was cheated out of my money.

At least the coffee was something I enjoyed but otherwise they need to teach the staff to smile more.
Ben Bleakley
Unfortunately there is not much choice on Thorndon Quay and guess this is why Bordeaux is still open. The food is overpriced and staff are never friendly. The food is pretty good though but overall I would avoid unless you are stuck working close to here and have no other option.

Needs a good freshening up. Service is okay, good pastry selection, coffee good.

Lacks a vibe.

Has a toy box and clean toilets. Loathe paying for parking to have coffee though.
Caffeinated Weka
Bordeaux has had its ups and downs over the years. This was always our 'treat' cafe, as the prices are higher than other cafes in the area but usually reflected the high quality of food. The improved floor-to-ceiling windows make the upstairs dining area much more open and light. The food counter seems to have been 'tidied up', too. As usual, the sour dough was in top form and my friend enjoyed her pumpkin soup for lunch. Our service today was great; I hope the food and overall dining experience at Bordeaux manages to regain its 'top quality' reputation and remain consistently high.
