We eat here regularly and love it. The meals are consistently well cooked and delicious and we appreciate the very attentive & cheerful service.

Loved the cheesy garlic naan bread, the curry was spicier than expected so would get mild next time

Very welcoming and great service. Had the chicken lababdar, chicken tikka masala and garlic chilli naan. Absolutely plenty of food for two people!

We visited Whitby Taj on New Year's eve 2022. Excellent, friendly service, and the food came very fast and well presented. I had a main, Mansoori Beef, garlic naan and rice. I ordered the beef kiwi hot, and the heat level was bang on. The curry was great, one of the best curry's I have in a long long long time. I highly recommend the Taj and this dish in particular. The bread was also excellent, and its great that the restaurant is BYO. All others in our group also really enjoyed their meals. I'll definitely be back. Next time I'll remember to take photo!

We dined here for lunch and I was very impressed. Food was excellent. Fresh ingredients. Meal size wasn't too big well but well proportioned. Customer service was exceptional. Highly recommend, probably one of the best Indian restaurants I've been to pound for pound. I will be returning. Attention to detail on decor would be the only criticism I could give. Fixing some small details in that area will level up this restaurant.

Amazing waiter, amazing service. And to top that with the food along with the amount of mints we were allowed really makes you enjoy it there. Definitely deserves five stars

First time my partner and I had curry at Taj restaurant last week, and absolutely loved it! The right amount of heat and the flavour was beautiful with decent chunks of meat. We ended up ordering again tonight with a friend, it was that good ^_^

Lovely week night meal. Restaurant was quiet as midweek but not empty. Paneer tikka masala was lovely as was the chicken Kashmiri. Great service 👍🏼

We loved this latest visit to the Taj, wonderful food. Good portion sizes and meat in the dish . We went twice when it was first opened and were left disappointed for what we received and the higher prices to other Indian restaurants we visit. Glad we have given it another go.

Wonderful tandoori chicken and the best chicken vindaloo in Wellington! Try the korma and pasanda too. Garima and her team are smiley and friendly and there is always a wave from the chefs too. Thoroughly recommend a visit.

$13 for kids nuggets (5) and chips that look identical to McDonald's. Mild was medium, medium was hot and sooooo overpriced - won't be back!

Despite no longer living in Whitby area we still rate this our favourite Indian restaurant in all of Wellington/Kapiti and make a point of detouring here at any chance. They'll be our FIRST order now that Level 3 allows us to enjoy their yummy naan breads and Navratan Korma. YUM!!

We go here about once a month

The restaurant is nice and cosy, and the staff are very polite.

Some of tbe curries are good. Others have way too much sugar.

went here last night the butter chicken was overpowering with cumin and tomatoes and the roti was too thick and dry and not enough rice to feed 4 people

Cosy setting. Friendly table service. Food takes some time but is always worth the wait with a good bottle of red (you can bring your own for a small corkage, if you wish). Their food is rich in flavour, well presented and portions are just right. The menu offers a wide variety of options - spicy or not so spicy, meat or vegitarian, great Indian breads / naans, even a variety basket if you cant decide. Many reasons to return and entertain guests.

Came here for lunch but they are closed. No explanations on the door, simply closed. .......................................................

We've eaten takeaway from Whitby Taj a few times. We've always picked up our food from the restaurant. The food is fantastic. We thought we'd have it delivered this last time, but that was the wrong choice. We were told it would be an hour. However when we called to find out how much longer the wait would be at the 1hr40 min mark we were told the driver was leaving at that moment. 25 mins later our order arrived. The total wait was over 2hrs, after we were told the wait would be 1hr.

Food is great, but we'd recommend picking it up yourself.

Really friendly staff and very tasty meals.
We had the lamb biryani, Rogan Josh, almond chicken and chicken Tikka Masala, some garlic naans as well as a mixed platter to share. All these meals were definitely cooked to a high standard and were scrumptious. I find it slightly disappointing though when you see restaurants using ready made pastes instead of using spices to create their own special blend to create a unique taste and unfortunately the Whitby Taj uses pastes.
I also thought that given the price of the mains that rice would have been included like most Indian restaurants but we were told that rice had to be purchased separately.
The ambiance of the restaurant was great thought and cleanliness was top notch.
Will we return??...... not sure, still haven't made up my mind.

Food - 7.5/10
Customer Service - 10/10
Cleanliness - 10/10
Price - 6/10

I have tried a lot of Indian Restaurants in Wellington area and this is by far the best Indian food outlet. Food is fantastic and really tastes authentic. Wife loves the Chicken Korma from here and I like the Lamb Madras. Atomosphere of the restaurant is really friendly and the staff always helps you to try something new on their menu. Service is fast without compromising with the food quality. Kudos to the Taj team.

Regular diners at the Whitby Taj.

Food is good, but recently service can be hit and miss, however compared to the delivery option at least you get the food in a reasonable and acceptable time.

Unfortunately we ordered a delivery on Monday evening via Menulog.

Running a business is about communication at any level, these people miss the boat by a mile.
Food was late even after a call from the restaurant apologising for a short delay of 10 minutes. One and a half hours later after ordering on a Monday night (order at 850pm) food arriving late is not acceptable by any standards. Not only is this not acceptable but the manager was not willing to take responsibility when questioned about the late arrival. We did try calling the restaurant prior to cancel but got no answer.
They need to work on their customer service, which is absolutely pathetic. Business is difficult for anyone at the best of times, but why not think about your customer.

why offer delivery if you can't back it up as your food is really good and would come back again and again, but unfortunately not for the service which in today's market is the main reason people spend money eating out..

Ordered a lamb saag to share with my partner. Generous portion size. this was the first time we'd tried this dish and we were pleasantly surprised. Curry was very tasty and we look forward to our next visit.

I really enjoyed everything about this restaurant! Despite having two other tables of about 10 people each table they still kept up the great service, and our food arrived on time and delicious! Crazy stuff, and they still managed to give good service to the small tables! Although there were so many people I loved the atmosphere, very happy, and eating good food makes everyone happy. One of the waitresses was obviously quite new, but she did an excellent job nonetheless! The other staff were obviously very competent and knew her stuff through and through! My compliments to the chefs too! They catered to the Mild, Medium and (very) Hot on my table. Brilliant very tasteful food, me and my family enjoyed it immensely.

Recommend to anyone who enjoys very good Indian food! Great job to everyone. :)

I have gone to many Indian restaurants in the Wellington Porirua area and I definitely put this one in my top 5 go-to Restaurants. Mostly because the food is so great, but also the restaurant has a great ambiance and the service as EXCELLENT! The staff were laid back without being rude, and paid enough attention to us for it not to be them coming back every 5 seconds asking how the meals were. The menu was also very well set out, normally I find myself being confused by how menu's are laid out because of too many options. Their menu was plentiful with options but also easy to understand. Cannot reccomend enough!
The takeaways are just as good. They were fast, efficient and delicious! All things you hope to have in a takeaway. Impressive especially since it already a high functioning restaurant!

Eaten here a few times as well as the other Taj restaurants. I would say the the food is good and tasty without being spectacular but what lets it down sorry is the service and staff attitude

I ordered a takeaway order at 6.45pm and was told on the phone it would be ready at 7.10pm. I went down at 7.08pm, paid, and was asked to wait while they finish up my order. 25 minutes later I was still waiting, despite multiple other takeaway orders being placed and picked up. A few takeaway bags had been sitting on the counter for about ten minutes so I approached the counter and asked how much longer my order would take. I was asked for the name of my order and the lady then checked the bags on the counter. One of them was mine.

I did not appreciate not being told my order was ready, and that it was sitting on the counter for ten minutes going cold. I was only given my order after I had to go up and ask how much longer it would be. While I appreciate that it may take 50 minutes to cook, I would have rather been told to come at 7.35pm to pick up rather than 7.10pm as I could have spent those 25 minutes doing something productive.

Will not be ordering takeaway again but would still consider going for a sit down meal.

UPDATE: Taj called me and explained that they were having a power cut (which I was not aware of) at the time of my ordering, hence the delay. They were very apologetic and sincere. I understand these things happen and appreciate the way they handled this situation. Much happier customer now :) ps. the food was good.

Hi there,We got some Chicken Korma Mild take-away from the Whitby Taj. We were really looking forward to this meal. We found it be very disappointing. I have had many mild Chicken Korma dishes in my life and this one was completely tasteless. It had the texture of pumpkin soup and tasted like baby food. We have had other meals from your restaurant which were great, but this was a real disappointment. Choosing mild, should not be tasteless.Kind Regards,Mary-Ellen Mik

I had lunch with a friend at the Taj in Whitby for the first time & was very disappointed. We both choose the lunch time special $12.99 for curry, rice & naan bread. We both declined the naan bread & drunk water only. My friend had prawns & was aware that it would cost an extra $2, yet was charged $18 & I was charged $14. They argued that they charge $3 for each rice, yet on the board outside it clearly states rice included. The food was average.
I hate rip-offs! I will not be going back!

Just been to Taj whitby for the second time and for the second time we have been given only one container of rice when we ordered two meals...... Each meal should have its own rice as the Taj is presuming that these meal will be eaten together, wrong! Surely if your paying $40 plus the rice should be plentyful? Its not expensive for rice so are they just trying to save money on containers? Also unfortunatly again the rice is cold which is a shame. Will i try my luck for a third visit? Im not sure but if i do words will be exchanged..... So Taj if i revist PLEASE dont let me down. Its a shame as your food is wonderful!!

We were excited to try our new local Indian, and we weren't disappointed. We got a delivery, and didn't have a menu, but the staff were helpful and accommodating while we made our choices. There were a few hiccups on delivery as our address was hard to find - but the staff kept in touch and explained the delay, so we weren't bothered - and they know where we are for next time. The food was delightful, can't wait to have it again.

Excellent food as to be expected from the Taj brand!! Service has a few creases to be ironed out but very friendly and I'm 100% confident it'll be running like a well oil machine in no time.

Had the Prawn Malabari - very nice curry indeed! There were 6 of us and all of the curries were outstanding in flavour.

We were really disappointed in our meal. We had high expectations being a new restaurant but unfortunately were let down. We chose two dishes and struggled to find the meat in the very ordinary sauces, let alone taste any difference between the two. Both dishes seemed to be thickened artificially rather than authentically. We really hope that Whitby Taj can improve and up their game a bit. We won't be back for a while.
