Review Poppy's Cafe - Whakatane

Martin Strickland
Went for our first visit to this Cafe despite having visited Whakatane many times. They had an all day breakfast and brunch menu and a wide selection of freshly prepared dishes There was also most impressive sweets and cakes cabinet. I had fish of the day (Dory) which was deliciously crumbed and the wife had the BLAT. Both meals were well presented, well portioned, reasonably priced and very tasty. Equally cleaning up of tables and presentation was noted to be speedy and done well. Will certainly be back on our next Whakatane visit.

Every time I come here the food is great, beautifuly big portions, a bit pricey but you get what you pay for!!! The workers are always nice and patient. Sometimes the wait for food is a bit long but overall I don't mind as this place is just amazing!

Yummy food for lunch today. They could have added fruits for $10 pancake. Bit pricey just for 3 small pancakes and whipped cream.

We visited Poppy's recently during a family weekend get together. Our visit began with an introduction to Whakatane by the owner and explained how they had a New coffee machine so if we were after one they were more than willing to oblige but that there could be a bit of a wait due to live teething issues accident. The staff were on hand very smartly to clean and clear up the mess left behind by any tables and to answer our questions about the place and the art fixtures hanging on the walls. They were just amazing in their response and caring attitude. Meantime the rest of us enjoyed our coffees and the beautifully presented brunch meals. The brunch menu was extensive and with a good range of options, some rarely available elsewhere such as lambs fry and bacon - my choice and it was divine. we were served by the owner who was very friendly and efficient .And other staff were clearing and wiping tables down after customers had left the tables . The place was spotless and had lovely paintings round the fairly new painted walls. The down side was the length of time before we got our coffee's but they were worth waiting for as excellent The cafe has some lovely New Zealand landscape photographs and pictures to add to the ambiance. I, and my family, can highly recommend Poppy's Cafe for their food selection, service and presentation; for their coffee and especially for their well trained, efficient and caring staff.

We have been to Poppy's before several yrs ago and had remembered the great food so without hesitation, popped in for a late lunch. We shared a panini expecting as elsewhere, a lovely presented plate and an xtra plate. I was thrilled that each half of the Panini arrived at our table beautifully presented on individual plates with a big smile from the waitress. Really appreciated such wonderful service after a big drive from Morrisville. Highly recommended.

We had been away in Canada, where everything was so expensive, and food was not as generous as we were used to. My first meeting when I got home was at Poppy's. I walked in and was overwhelmed by the generosity of the food and the wonderful service. Sometimes it's not until we go away and come home that we realise his lucky we are. We sure are lucky!

Went with a booked coffee group.we all enjoyed the cabinet food and good coffee. Was getting busy and staff still came to our table. Was quiet for the numbers there.

A little on the pricey side for me but a hugely popular cafe. Likely the most popular in town. Always very busy. Food and service are both very good

My husband and I had lunch here today. I had Gourmet Chicken Burger and wedges. Large meal! The wedges were nice and hot, pity the burger wasn't, in fact it was barely arm. But it did taste OK. My husband had seafood platter, seemed to be more salad than seafood. There was a good selection of food in cabinets and everything was reasonable priced. We did notice that at the table next to us, had been left uncleared and when other people sat there, the table was still left uncleared even after 3 different people bringing out various meals to the table. A little slack as there were only 3 other tables with people at. Cafe was very quiet.

The staff are miserable, the coffee tastes poo but the place looks ok. If I wanted this environment I would have gone to Mcdonalds.

I've been in there three times and I honestly don't know why I went back the second or third time. On all occasions I've ordered a coffee that has taken a while to arrive. on the last (and final time) it took almost 20 minutes. And you can only say 'did you order them for today' a few times before you start getting annoyed. When we went to ask why the coffee was taking so long - by the way, the place was empty apart from us - the girl smarmily replied, oh, they're just being made. Which was a lie, because noone was making coffees. So they were either just sitting there getting cold, or she was going to make them when she felt like it.
when they finally arrived, they were the wrong coffees and the milk was burnt.

You've got a better chance of getting a good coffee at Paper Plus across the road.
