Review Bushy Park - Whanganui

Erin Johnson
I have often driven past the sign for Bushy Park and wondered what it was. Well I can wonder no more as I recently visited with a school group. Tucked away off the highway is this stunning park, filled with native plants and beautiful bird song. The guides are worldclass and impart so much knowledge of the area and the species that reside here. The bush walks wind though lush green forest, native birds dart around and above you. What a magical place to visit.

Love Bushy Park!! About 15-20 minute drive from Whanganui towards New Plymouth (take care once you turn off the main road) lots of tracks to choose from. Could spend all day here! Beautiful native birds and trees to spot. Peaceful. History. Well established buildings well maintained. Toilets were clean. A few tracks were closed. Worth the drive and time!

A wonderful experience tucked away from town. This bird sanctuary does a fantastic job of showcasing local bird life in a predator free environment. Extensive work has been done to insure that the animals are left undisturbed, and that the history of the area is preserved. There is a visitor center, as well as a Cafe where you can have tea and scones while you sit inside the old manor. The manor has a wheelchair accessible lift, however the grounds are a nature walk and would be challenging to do.

Homestead was closed when we visited but totally enjoyed the visit. Saw playful saddlebacks and stitchbirds tomtits and tui. Very well presented and maintained and the historical displays were very interesting. Also its totally free to visit.

Very beautiful area with a nice set of walks around the grounds. We immediately saw birds we had not seen before and they were very curious flittering around us. They also offer self contained camping overnight if you contact them.

Loved this place. Lovely walks on the tracks to see native protected birds and it was not crowded at all. Got to see Tui and other birds. But more than seeing them listening to them was a pleasure. Beautiful place and I will go on back and stay there someday as there's a beautiful heritage place that has 5 rooms.Must see if you are near Whanganui

Fantastic park with several short walks you can easily combine to trek through the whole park. Trails were well graded, I’d say mostly flat but few spots with stairs. Favorite part was being serenaded by all the birds during our walk! Had cream tea at the homestead, great deal at $12pp, and then spent an hour walking the four tracks near the house. Nice facilities and small museum as well.

Beautiful sanctuary with amazing bird species, pest free. You can aso visit the historical building in the middle. Personally O liked more the sanctuary at lake Rotokare, because they have kiwi birds and you can do night trips there with freedom camping.

Wonderful gem just outside Wanganui. The reserve was abundant with bird life. The most Saddleback and Hihi I have seen. A number of easy short bush walks with some large wonderful trees. Stayed over at the Lodge. Such a credit to Dale and his staff. The lodge is looking fantastic and our room was lovely with breakfast included. Fabulous evening dinner prepared by Dale. Will definitely return. A serene and relaxing stay.
