Review The Good Home - Whangaparaoa

A great location for a quiet meal, family dinner or group get-together. The food is good quality, flavoursome pub meals, the range of beers and wines diverse. The atmosphere is pleasant, and no need to raise your voice to be heard. A food spot for all, with ample parking outside.

Comfortable bar with hearty food and various areas to relax and yarn or watch sky sports. There may be a small wait on food depending on the time but this is a place to kick back. Very popular with the trades. Good carparking being this is in a small shopping complex. Staff were very friendly and attentive. Only thing i would suggest in a dining menu with a difference that is seperate to the bar menu and have staff keeping an eye on tables for upselling on drinks and food. Even tasters while you wait for your main.

Always enjoyable dinning. Lovely friendly staff.

Soooo good! We ordered heaps, not realizing they'd come in large amounts. The onion rings are THE best!!! And they don't skimp.

One of the best burgers I've ever tasted and it's the first time I've had the delicious Thomas & Rose cider!

Really cute place and good atmosphere. Went to a 21st here and we booked out the patio for ourselves so very handy. Plus a private function menu

My husband and I live a 2 minute walk away and although have been in for drinks and chips occasionally we haven't tried anything else there. We went in last night and bought 2 vegan burgers, wedges and onion rings. We were told it would be a lot of food but we eat a lot so sounded awesome as a lot of vegan dishes can be very small. We were absolutely blown away by how amazing the service, food and portion sizes were. We were even asked if we wanted vegan cheese on the wedges. Such great service. We left super full and happy as! I haven't had that good a burger since as long as I can think and the onion rings were the best I've had ever. 😃 Definitely coming back with more vegan friends! Thanks guys!

Very nice food and drinks, family friendly.

An excellent menu and well presented. We enjoyed a beautiful tasty lunch of generous portions. The Caesars Salad with chicken was the best Caesars I have ever had. Our granddaughter enjoyed a Ham and Pineapple Pizza ordered from the kiddies menu. The coffee was excellent as was the service by very friendly and attentive staff. I highly recommend this establishment and will certainly dine there again.

Heading for our anniversary, the service was fantastic, but food was little bit salty. After knowing that, one of friendly girls made another dish for us straightway. Will definitely go back again.

I’ve been here a few times over the last few months. Best onion rings!!! Meals are reasonably good - large sized, standard reliable pub fare. Staff always attentive and polite. Great local which has improved since opening.

Great ambience and superb service. We were a group of vegetarians and the staff took great care to make sure we ordered the right dishes. Great choices of beer on tap and a good pub menu !!

Bartender was up for a good chat and had a good recommendations on the cocktails they have. Cute little spot with some kind of game night at least once a week, and sometimes a bouncey castle out the front! Great range of beers and an awesome menu that wasn't too scary for someone who usually eats very simple meals!

I ordered the pork belly, coleslaw and “hoisin” sliders (as mentioned in menu). They came out and were pork belly and coleslaw, with no hoisin, so they were extremely bland with little to no taste. I asked where the hoisin was and they said it’s mixed in with the mayonnaise (which wasn’t mentioned in the menu). Next time I’d prefer to be told they have no hoisin rather than replacing it with a bland mayonnaise. Overall very disappointed

Nice staff but they don’t pay much attention. Had one girl take our order, she repeated it to us 3-4 times unsure why, she must have been new. My meal came out and we were waiting for my girlfriends.. still waiting.. waiting.. we called another waitress over and asked her what was going on and she said there was no other order, that it was just mine.. she was informed about the other meal and sides we were waiting for, went and checked, came back and apologised and said the girl who had taken our order hadn’t put it through and that she would do it then as a “rush” order. By this point 20 minutes or so had passed and my food was going cold so I started eating, I had finished and the rest of the food still hadn’t arrived, by that point my friend was furious, especially seeing as the girl who had taken the order and made the mistake didn’t apologise herself, she didn’t even look our direction again the rest of the time we were there? Her food finally came and she was pissed off seeing as we were all done, she felt rushed. No discount was offered or anything, full price was paid. Probably won’t be returning.

We arrived just after 5:00 and we're ushered to a table by a friendly waitress. Unfortunately the service went downhill from there. Drink orders arrived 20 minutes after the order was placed. And food came 40 minutes after the order was placed. Food wasn't bad but they really need to work on their service if they want to keep their customers. One waitress on a Friday night is just not enough. A couple at the table next to us had to go and order at the bar as nobody came to collect their order.

Loving the new menu, so good. The salt and pepper squid was awesome, not your average fried out of a packet. Brisket Croquettes were super yum, burgers are excellent. Yay thank god for a great local pub with great food.

Went for a relaxed New Years dinner and chose to sit in the restaurant section (there is also a bar section and an outdoor atrium). Right away we were informed of a 45 minute wait - no problem - and the waitress was very friendly. One of the staff even came to check if our GF meal was due to allergy or not, to let us know that there could be cross contamination as is expected. Very thoughtful. <br/>The drinks came quickly, and when the food did come it was delicious. Only fault I could pick would be that there was no side salad on one of the dishes that was supposed to have one, and no basil on the margarita pizza - but I didn’t mind because it was still so tasty. <br/>We were so full we didn’t think we could go for dessert but I’m glad we did. Our table had donuts and creme brĂ»lĂ©e. The doughnuts were fluffy inside and the dipping sauces were delicious (I may have helped myself to a spoonful or two of just the sauce!) and the creme brĂ»lĂ©e cracked beautifully. <br/>The wait staff were friendly and helpful, and the wait really wasn’t an issue as the staff made sure our needs were taken care of. Looking forward to coming here again.

This was sadly a disappointment we waited an hour and 20 minutes for our food not to come out all at once same with our drinks by the time we finished our food our friends only just got theirs. Very very annoyed <br/>

Group of 4 of us went for dessert - ordered two creme brulee and two doughnuts. Sadly we were really disappointed. Creme brulee tasted like store bought custard which had crystalized sugar on top and the berry coulis was just frozen berries. The doughnuts were dry and stale and the sauces (chocolate and custard) were really disappointing. I give 2 star because the staff member who served us was amazing and friendly. She was coping well considering there was a big 21st function on at the same time as us having dessert.

1 star was pretty generous. Decided to give this place another chance.... and yup I have to wonder how this place is still open! 30min for a milkshake to come out and 45min and still waiting for the food. The worst part is this place only had a couple of tables occupied. This will be the last time. What a joke.

One of my local places - love the spareribs. I know Tom has worked hard to make them good - this is my favourite place for ribs!!! I also had the fish the other night and that was also good. Well done!

Another great experience, love the decor of this gastropub, we always feel comfortable taking the kids out for dinner here, service was fast, food tasted yummy only minor fault this time was the wait time (hungry impatient kids) otherwise all good. Thanks

If you haven’t been here yet you are most definitely missing out! Food is amazing and the staff are very friendly. The atmosphere is so calm and relaxed. Go and try it out!

The atmosphere and friendly service was very nice. <br/><br/>We had a friendly and prompt waitress. Fast service and the food was good. <br/>Lively vibe considering it’s a Wednesday night in Stanmore Bay. <br/><br/>Would definitely recommend The Good Home.

Really the worst place i have been to in Auckland! Over an hour wait for food and very average. Food doesn't arrive at the same time as others on the table. Staff and management are below par. Go elsewhere in Whangaparoa.

Good place, nice decor, food is pretty good, will be back. <br/>I had the Panhead burger with smoked cheese and my partner had the plain cheeseburger with blue. We both thought it was cool that they gave us the choice of cheese. The chips that came with the burger were served in a cool basket with a reasonable portion of fries.

After going to The Good Home in Mt Eden a few times I had high hopes for this one. Well I was extremely let down. I was with a party of 15 or more.  Was let down by a few things the food.. 5 people at my table had  problems with their food. What myself and a friend ordered was not at all what we imagined by the menu description. Her pizza fingers were more like  small burritos and tasteless, and my cheesy fries arrived luke warm, tasteless and the cheese which I imagined melted on top was just shaved. At least the aoili was nice after they corrected it,, I asked not to have truffle aoili but the normal aoili and the chips came out with the truffle one, and the waitress said to me no  it is the normal one as that is what was on the ticket. There were flecks of black in it so it knew it was the truffle one and my friend confirmed it. My coeliac friend had such a hard time with the food being called gf but not really gf. Her duck was burnt, dry and shriveled. She told the waitress she wasn't paying for her meal and she didn't which was good.<br/>It took a long time for our orders to be taken and to actually arrive. <br/><br/>Then at the end of the night when I went to pay and was asked how my food was and I replied terrible (I had say eaten 5 chips, my friends tried a few to see what I was talking about and they all agreed with me) So the waitress told the manager on duty who I felt got argumentative with me, and as my friend said to me acted like he really didn't give a damn.<br/><br/>Hope the new one in Lincoln Rd is better when our friendship group goes in December<br/><br/>All I can say is thank goodness the company was fantastic and the decor was lovely

Wow was so let down by the food which is a shame as it has a great pub atmosphere and the staff were lovely. I had fish and risotto although either the risotto was not cooked or it was cooked with long grain rice. I could have cooked the fish and risotto better at home. Miss 13 had the <br/>Mexican and the vegetables were burnt and tasted awful. Beef pie was good. Would not be going back in a hurry to eat there.

Came for a relatively early dinner as a couple. The ambience was nice with plenty of interesting decor. We were greeted, seated and given water promptly.<br/><br/>We ordered pizza bread as a starter, after reading here that the service may be slow, but that was not the case. The service was friendly and attentive.<br/><br/>The menu was mostly pub food with a lot of pizza and burgers. We ordered a veggie salad and chicken Palmie, followed by apple and rhubarb crumble. The food was tasty and portions were generous. We went home very full and with leftover pizza bread.<br/><br/>By the time we left the place was bustling. They seemed very family friendly and Next time we will bring the kids too.<br/><br/>Total bill for 2 drinks, 2 mains, pizza bread and 1 desert, was $81.70 ($40pp)

Dined here last nite after booking table for 6. <br/>Service was attentive and offered excellent description of menu and wine list. <br/>Fish was fresh and excelled portion size and the beef cheek and horseradisch was beautiful prepared.<br/><br/>Just one blip the garlic bread starter had no garlic... the waitress promptly agreed and the manager credited on my final bill when paying. Overall good local dining<br/>

Stay away from this place!....Spend your hard money in a restaurant that deserves your patronage....don't waste it on a place like this! I went to 'the good home' tonight as a member of a party of 11 diners. Our meals were delivered in five separate visits by the waiter(s) and exactly one hour after ordering, my Caesar salad turned up (last) minus the poached egg......with an apology from the waiter that the poached egg had taken longer to cook than they had anticipated and that he would bring the egg out when it was ready! (Would they bring out a steak without the vegetables?) Five minutes passed...ten minutes passed...finally after fifteen minutes having had no contact from anyone, I went and found the waiter (who hadn't been anywhere near our table in that time), he was behind the bar. " Excuse me" I said, "You delivered my Caesar salad 15 minutes ago and you were supposed to be bringing the poached egg!". "Oh, I'll get it for you". Five minutes later the egg was fetched to our table in a container. By this time my 10 fellow diners had all finished their meals. There was no words of apology, in fact there were no words at all! I was disgusted so I told the waiter I didn't want the meal. So what happened then?.........absolutely nothing, no offer of an alternative, no appearance by the waiter, no appearance by the manager, nothing......I was just left hungry! I wasn't our party organiser so wasn't involved in paying the bill but when the person paying went to the bar to pay, she asked for the Caesar salad to be removed. Apparently, the manager apologised ....but nothing else! No concern over whether the issue had been satisfactorily resolved! On leaving I approached the bar and spoke to the man who acknowledged he was the manager to ask if 'the good home' was on Facebook, to which he replied "probably, I expect so". I then told him in quite an animated fashion (I was furious) how disgusted I was with the poor service, poor waiter and poor management. He accused me of being unreasonable because I refused to go into a private room to discuss the matter (for that read: he didn't want the customers in the bar to hear my complaint!). He tried to say it was a miscommunication, that he thought it had been resolved but when I asked him how he thought it had been resolved....he had no answer. This is the worst treatment I have ever received in any eatery in New Zealand and thankfully it isn't typical in my experience. The service, customer care and customer consideration is non-existent in this establishment and as for the food.....I can't comment.... I didn't get any!!! If you are looking to eat out in the Stanmore Bay area, then avoid this place at all cost!

Second time visiting here, and will probably be our last. Both times the service has been unbelievably slow. Last night it was a 2 hour visit for 1 round of drinks and pizzas. Food itself is fine, but the whole experience tainted by slow service. Too many other cool places around for people to try out to get away with service like this.

I don't understand the low reviews the food wasn't bad. Calamari was delicious, my steak seemed ok. Bathroom was clean, environment was friendly...<br/><br/>I just don't understand the low rating... weird<br/><br/>Environment: 4/5<br/>Food Quality: 4/5<br/>Food Quantity: 4/5<br/>Service: 4/5<br/>Price $40pp

Visited the Good Home today, and had a very average experience. Enjoyed the ambiance, and the decor, but the food was a real let down. We waited over and hour for four burgers - the Aunties Favourite Haloumi burger. The buns were dry and over-toasted. Less than one teaspoon worth of mayonnaise. The thinnest possible slices of haloumi, which were overcooked, almost to the point of being burnt. Thin strips from around the edge of a tomato (which begs the question - what do you do with the insides of all your tomatoes, and why not just put a whole slice of tomato in the burger?!?). I don't understand how any chef could serve that and think it was appropriate to charge people $20 - clearly he/she has never actually tried it. The only redeeming feature was the milkshakes - which were great. A bit more effort put into the food - and this would be a place worth visiting.

Long wait for our food for what was below standard meal of a slim piece of salmon, 8 over cooked wedges in a soup of butter.  Other meals equally disappointing .  Very disappointing all round.

Went for dinner on Tuesday well where do I start we were seated with water and menus told it was two for one which is a fabulous idea. My husband and I were served by the lady in the black top with blonde hair (We didn't get the chance to grab her name as she was very busy) Would like to add she was outstanding what an absolute asset to you're team. Food was out fast and we were recommended the pizza bread to start with which was yummy. We both left completely full and walked out feeling very pleased we found The good home. The good bye's before we walked out was a real change and a very lovely note to leave on we will be back next time we visit up that way again. Karen

Our new local and now new favourite. Always amazing food and service, awesome decor and not a bad Good Home brew either. I couldn't recommend this place more.

In today's economic times, we tend to reserve eating out for special occasions and decided to go to the Good Home for my daughter's birthday. Granted they were busy but after some or other mix up in the kitchen, my meal only arrived after everyone else had already finished their meals. I ordered the "Grilled Market Fish" (recommended by our waiter) which was two tiny pieces of fish, obviously pre-frozen and overcooked - I should have taken a photo of it. The fish was served with pea and prawn risotto which arrived as a gloopy mess with 5 "saffron" peas, not a prawn in sight and tasted like macaroni cheese. Hugely disappointing for the $29 that they were more than happy to charge (and yes, we did complain at the time). The ribs that my hubby had were over boiled and flavourless (the full portion appeared to be the same size as the half portion) but at least the S+P squid was lovely. The wine arrived at the table already opened which does not fill me with great confidence. What a waste of our hard earned money! We have re-branded it to "The No-Good Home" and sadly, we won't be back.

Don't know exactly how I feel after last nights dinner but I'll explain. So I went to have dinner here with my Aunty and Uncle for my belated birthday, we arrived I loved the venue it's awesome sat down and no one seemed to serve us for a while as we were wanting drinks. Eventually ordered our drinks, then they took ages to come out we had to ask where they were they brought them out and mine was wrong I asked for a light Wither Hills Pino Gris and they brought me out a RosĂš which isn't what I asked for so I sent it back. As it was "rib night" the kitchen wasn't cooking all the main dishes on the menu which I thought was really weird so we had to wait 15 minutes if we wanted any main meals? Which we did so we waited in the mean time we ordered garlic pizza that took a while to came out eventually got it and that was nice. Again we finished our drinks and no one came to ask if we wanted anymore so we had to get up and asks ourselves again the drinks didn't come for ages so we had to go to the bar to ask where they were. They bring our drinks out and again my Pino Gris wasn't Wither Hills so I had to send it back! This time they said the drinks will be on the house since the service was so slow which was nice. After 1 hour for waiting for our main meals they came out and they were absolutely appalling, my Aunty and uncles steak was well done round the edges and raw in the middle when they had asked for medium rare. My burger was so disgusting it tasted like someone had poured salt all over the meat patty I didn't even eat it, so really I was quite disappointed for first impression. My Aunty said they had been a couple times now they live in the area and the last time the service was shocking so she wanted to give it one more go and it was shocking again so we all won't be coming back to eat again, I would probably go for a drink and maybe bar snacks but that's it.

really busy on a sat night, but wasnt too noisy where we were seated, my market fish on risotto was just ok, i should have asked what the fish was, i enjoyed it tho but meal was very small, more like a lunch size, left a bit hungry, the other three meals were ok. pizza bread came out for dessert as they forgot to bring it! third time we have visited and will go back, maybe not for dinner

Decided to try out for lunch on mothers day. Hostess was lovely but waitress was not. Was a set menu, no problem, most of us went for two courses. Arrived at 12.00 and left at 2.30. Everything was slow and the order seemed very muddled up. Felt sorry for son in law. He had mac'n'cheese as a main and ice cream sunday $39.00. He was happy about this until he got his main which was no bigger than an entree. A very small portion with nothing else. He went home and had lunch. Too long, too slow, some of the food not that good. On top of that both myself and my husband ended up with upset tummies so nothing nice for the rest of the day. We like to try new things on the coast but will not go here again. Worst Mothers Day lunch ever.

Been here a few times service is always poor... Always takes a long time to be acknowledged by staff.. Menu alot of the time is not what you get. Food is average.

Quite surprised to see the very mixed reviews below. Our experience at The Good Home was great. Visited on a busy late Saturday arvo in April; we shared a couple of small entree plates as a snack with a couple of drinks. The calamari was delicious and tender and the pizza bread an absolute hit! Great value for money and soaked up the couple of of beers we had as well. Service was quick and friendly and we thought the decor and style/vibe of the place was relaxed and had quite a classic cruisy feel to it. Looked to be loads of locals enjoying a few quiets along mixed groups and families too. We'll look to visit again when back on the Coast. Cheers TGH!

Went for lunch for my Dads birthday. And I was not impressed at all. I feel it was not good value for money. My partner had the breakfast and couldn't eat the bread it was so hard. Made a comment to waitress with no response. Grand daughters meat patty in her burger was dry and again didn't eat it. Water at table tasted awful. We will not be going back.

Restaurant has good ambience and appears popular.<br/><br/>However this is the second meal I have had where the main course was wrecked by the kitchen.<br/><br/>I ordered the sirloin, rare. It came over cooked on the outside, with about 2mm of cooked meat, the rest was raw and cold to touch. To add insult to injury they had covered it in the red wine jus that tasted like it had been sitting in the bain marie for a week.<br/><br/>I ordered a rare steak, not a raw steak.<br/><br/>I'm not game to order food there again.

Came here before 12pm, so didn't get the chance to try steak meals etc, but had a beer and a share platter...what can i say, was excellent, mussels were fresh which is a must and collection of samples and sauces' were really tasty, premises big..but clean, its new,so will see if that standard continues.staff were friendly as was the manager..food came promptly.and yes table was stable,yehah...definitely going back..if i had one negative, one of the mussels still had a big narly beard init, gotta de beard the mussels, minor compared to whole experience.

I went here with a few friends for the first time the other night. We walked and it took a few minutes for anyone to really talk to us or seat us as everyone seemed a bit busy. We were seated on a small table which we didn't mind but was nice that the waitress offered other options if this was too small. Our glasses of water were regularly filled which was nice too since I'm a thirsty person 😂. Once we ordered it took about 50 minutes or more for our meals to come out which in my opinion is a little too long, hence the no photos of our meals we were so hungry😂. I ordered the chicken and bacon linguine which was nice, decent amounts of bacon but I found the chicken must have been a cheap cut as there was at least 5 mouthfuls I had to spit out because it had fatty hard bits, which I remembered I also had to do at The Good Home in Birkenhead. The service was friendly enough and they checked in on us several times so you knew you weren't forgotten considering the place was reasonably busy. I think this place will be good for meet ups with friends to grab a drink and some fries, but I might steer clear from the meals as they seemed a bit mediocre.
