Review Drunken Crayfish - Whangaparaoa

Food was all fried really well and in good quality oil. Definitely a nice pit stop. Make sure to ask for lemon wedges (complimentary)

We pop in once in a while and always get a lovely meal. The children have burger and chips, sometimes crab sticks or fish and chips. Great value and always good quality.

We love this place, not the cheapest, but we'll worth the expense. Yum! Not greasy, conscientious in their packaging, we are loving there takeaways. Phone your order, the wait is soooo worth it!

Hoki and chips was lovely. I'd prefer only half chips though. Seems wasteful.
Jason Harlen
They do make very nice burgers. Fair prices. Lovely staff - I would recommend calling to place your order. Or you can find yourself waiting for your meal from 15 to 30 mins
Caitlin Shylar
100% the only place I go to get wonton soup. Best wonton soup on the coast
Andre Phyffer
Really nice food and decent portions!!! Absolutely great value for money. We had the crumbed Snapper and Double Sailor burger. Highly recommended!! We definitely have this more often. Thank you!!
Cameron Inskeep
The premium crumbed fish (Gurnard, Tarakihi etc.) is great. My only grumble is the wait time given for my phone order was 20min, but it was 45min before the order was ready
Sarah Harris
Best chips I think I’ve ever had! They’re so crispy and salty, there can be really long wait times and the younger staff can often be quite stressed out. I would recommend calling in advance so you don’t have to wait! But either way the food is worth the wait!

Had fish and chips from here yesterday. Ordered 2 pc fish, kumara chips and spring roll ... When it arrived it didn't look like enough for both of us so ordered scoop of chips as well.. It seems expensive for the amount you get but trust me... It was definitely enough for 2 people to eat and not feel over full and yuck afterwards. (like back in the day when portion sizes were huge and cheap). The food was cooked really well, crispy fish and chips. Kumara chips not crispy but that's how they generally turn out anyway. Still delicious!

Foods pretty trash now after quarantine. Chips are alg, the other owners before quarantine had way better pricing and good as food. Come back old owners thanks

Absolutely trash food. It used to be one of the best fish and chip shops but unfortunately has gone down hill in the last few years. I tried to give it the benefit of the doubt, however I have been sick from here twice, once was from a piece of "fresh fish" which was green underneath the batter and tasted rancid. The owner and staff are very rude, and do not respond well to negative feedback. Anywhere else is better.
Sheryl
Bad, bad, bad!! Called to order but when I came to pick up, there was no order/record under my name and telephone number, they cannot trace my order! This is not the first time, but 3rd!! Worst thing ever after a long day of work and all you want to do is eat! Absolutely annoying!

This is a local takeaway which is booming on the weekends. The food is good for what you pay for, I would recommend it.
We ordered the roast pork stir fry with noodles, apparently there are two versions. I got the juicy one with veggies, loved the amount of food and all the fresh veggies! Yummy!
Local favourite!

Reasonable fish & chips - best in Gulf Harbour anyway, probably need to change the oil more frequently as sometimes it does taste a bit stale

I have been supporting this local business for years. With the introduction of the Chinese menu it has gone way down hill. Twice I ordered Chinese and both times it was disgusing and threw it in the bin. Went today for my usual Snapper & Chips now also disgusting. Fish was nearly off and chips were a mix of old hard chips and fresh chips. Thought I would give them a ring to let them know about today's purchase - they are not interested. This business looking at the reviews is constantly getting a 1 rating these days. Enjoy my money, bad food is in the bin again. I nor any of my friends will be going back

Bad bad bad.ordered chicken chop suey.so bland no flavour at all talked to owner he said that's what we do so if you want flavour go somewhere else.i will take his advice ,you should to,manly very flavorsome .

This is the worst fish and chip shop in Auckland. Disgustingly greasy despite being asked to make sure the order was well drained. $8 per piece Blue Cod...which I am sure was hoki. Refried chips, which were served in a tiny bag instead of wrapping in paper. Very rude owners who refused to acknowledge the poor product and a $27 a total rip off. I would avoid at all costs

I enjoy their vegetarian burger a lot. Very filling. I have a big thing for fries but theirs weren't the best. Onion rings were quite good. I will definitely go back if I feel like a burger. Prices are on the cheaper side
Steph Coulton
Fairly average fish and chips at average price, $4.80 for fish. I would say the service was average and we were the only people in the place.
Chips were overcooked and the batter was a bit gloopy, hence a 3.0 rating.
It would be nice if they had self serve salt and other amenities you'd expect in a fish and chip shop like forks and napkins.
Kaylene Jessin
Their food is pretty good, especially their crumbed snapper. The prices are nice enough and my food always tastes fresh :) When I have no food at home and when I'm too lazy to cook, this place is the first place that comes to my mind

This is our local fish and chip shop so have had food from here quite a bit. I am quite surprised to see the negative reviews as normally I hear people rave about this place. Personally I quite like it. The chips are always very good, the fish a bit on the greasy side unless you get it crumbed, husband says the burgers and hotdogs good. You have to ask to get the toasted sandwiches cut which is a bit of a pain but they taste as you would expect. We normally phone ahead and most of the time it is a 10-15min wait which is what I would expect. For fish and chips you don't get much better this end of the coast.

If your looking for a quick hearty fix then this is the place to go, with alot on their take away menu, you will surely find something to fill the gap.
The slowest fish and chip shop in the would like to tell you about the food but have been here 40 minuets and nothing. How long does it take to make chips!
M
Fantastic food at great prices, it may take a few minutes to get your order because they are usually quite busy, but it is worth the wait. Fish and chips are a favorite and their old fashioned potato fritters are the best north if the harbour bridge. Milkshakes are yummy. A real treat and you can walk across the grass and eat eat your food by he Gulf Harbour waterways rotunda.

First of all I don't have high expectations of fast food. It is as it says. It's prepared quickly and is low cost. So I don't expect too much from a take away place. But it should be edible and should taste nice.

We ordered 2 steak & egg burgers, 1 piece of Hoki, which cost a little extra, and chips. The steak was as tough as old boots, and there was a strange seasoning that reminded me of Chinese fast food. We like Chinese food but don't expect a burger to taste like it. The Hoki was tasteless. It too wasn't edible.

As it happens we had bought from the Drunken Crayfish just a few weeks earlier. It was bad then so for us, once is an off day, twice is consistent.

So if the owners are reading this, you need to up your act - quickly and by a considerable margin.

Hi All,

UK Fish & Chips been there done that......yuck.

Visited the Drunken Crayfish tonight for a feed and the food and service was very good. The blue cod I ordered was delicious and feedback from my other half about her hamburger was also very good. I have been there about 10 times now and it has always been a cut above your average fish and chips shop and a lot better than any UK fish and chips shop that I've been to and I've been to a few.

Ok guys I'm from the UK where I'm used to walking into busy fish and chip shops with queues going out of the door whereby I will get to be served in 2-3 minutes, the order is placed and my food is given to me immediately. ..

On top of that, the chips in the UK are freshly cut from potatoes... they don't serve frozen chips!!!!

I'm at the chippy now, typing slowly on my s4 and all i have ordered is 1 small bag of frozen chips, it will be a fraction of the portion size and will taste ok... but for prize the money and a really long wait.

I honestly can't comprehend the business model here :) NZ is crying out for a UK style fish and chip shop!

I haven't said anything too negative I hope just being honest... the wait usually takes 15 minutes even if you are the only customer.
Dan
Worst fish and chip shop in NZ! Don't bother. Kids burger (bun, meat and cheese) was $5.00 When issue was brought up with owners the lady didn't care. Sorry wont be back at this shop. previous owners cared a whole lot more!
Trish
The wait was an hour and a half for a simple order of fish and chips (same wait time for 2 visits) - no phone number which made it necessary to sit there and wait - outside in the car since the place was overcrowded with people waiting for their orders also. May be better if the service was improved
Cyndy Price
Inconsistent quality. Not sure if the snapper really was really snapper. If it was, it was not kept very well. Have eaten here about 4 times hoping for better, and sadly, better didn't eventuate. Smiling during service would also be a bonus.

For starters, I am a big critic of fish and chips restaurants, and have only found a select few I would revisit. I have recently become partial to the Rice Bran Oil and Alfa One Spread that is now purchased and used and find myself not going back to anything else. This is what drew me to the Drunken Crayfish to begin with.
The Drunken Crayfish is one of the best fish and chips places I have come across and I enjoy going in there. The staff are friendly and helpful and the food is fantastic.
Pauline
We live locally, last night must have been the busiest i have seen Drunken Crayfish, as usual the fish & chips were outstanding , we never go anywhere else, thanks guys the blue cod was huge !, the fresh gurnard was beautiful, see you next week !.
Pauline

Had fish & chips here last night for a family of 10 with friends, just fantastic, had the blue cod, best i have had in a long time, others had seafood chowder, everyone was very very happy with the chips & fish, Chowder, we will definitely be coming back for more, phone ahead as it was busy for a Thursday night.
Andrew
Went here for the 4th time the other day for lunch, i had sushi and spoke to the sushi chef, this has to be the best sushi i have tasted, my wife had the seafood chowder, very very good, we will be back again, thankyou !

I must agree with the other people who have give this takeaway good marks, Last Friday night i went into make an order, the line was out the door !!, it must have been the busiest i have seen this takeaway, my order was rather large for 8 people, the lovely girl on the counter said it would be 30 min, when my order came out exactly 30 min later i headed home, i must say what a fantastic meal , the fish & chips were perfect, the kids meals great, and the whole meal was fantastic value for money, this is our third time here and its always consistent, keep it up !.
Kylie
My husband and i live in Gulf Harbour, we had heard great things about the food at the Drunken Crayfish, last night we went their for the first time, this has to be the best fish and chips we have ever had, and the price, Mon & Tues $5 fish and chips, the chips are to die for with the chicken salt, the veg burger our daughter had was fantastic with the gluten free corn fritter, this is a must to visit, best fish and chips i have had in a long time.
Paul
I have been to this shop on a number times since there opening, as i am a traveler i always eat out, i feel there fish and chips are the best i have tasted in a long time, there burgers have real meat !, the fish is cooked in rice bran oil and you can taste the difference, i feel the bad comments have been from other people trying to put the place down as Gulf harbour is a small area, i will continue to eat at the shop as i am very pleased with the service and the clean shop.
Renate Staudinger
Had Fish and chips, crisp, tasty and huge and a bargain.
highly recommended!
Bruce
I agree with the last review - we always enjoy the service and food!! Great fish and chips!
Nicole
we are locals in gulf harbour and love the fish and chips from this place, staff are always smiling and the fries cant be beaten!! As for the first two comments i guess its understandable with any new business - there are always teething problems!!! nicole and jay

DON'T EVER GO THERE~!!!!

The drunken crayfish isn't even on the scale its that bad! 5 of us ordered small meals to share when the shop was empty waiting an incredible 45 minutes as they lost our last order. I checked my order was completely vegetarian along with my friend, as we don't eat any meat at all.

After waiting so long we finally we headed back to the house to eat our now stone cold fish and chips. I bit into my veg roll and tasted nothing more but meat and a old piece of cabbage, spitting it out and feeling sick, I then tried my chips which i especially ordered with only salt, to only taste chicken flavouring. Then when you think it cant get any worse, my friend ordered an egg, which was black along the bottom and the yoke was smushed ever, complaining about it only led to the prick of a cook blaming it on the grill. With no refund, discount for our cold food and not even an apology. I don't even eat eggs but i can cook them!

Ringing up today I asked what went on and expected an apology, and for re-assurance that this doesn't happen often but got yelled at by the chef who cant cook, told that the communication in the kitchen/ with staff is excellent, and thats its not his problem!!! Hes an arrogant rude cook who has no cooking skills, cant even deep fry wedges ( frozen in the middle) and is not worth the time of day! Don't ever eat there, its not worth the time and patience!
Jessica
The Drunken Crayfish is an extremely inconsistent fish and chips shop. A previous dining experience left me believing that the Drunken Crayfish was home to New Zealand’s best chips; golden, crisp, light with a chicken salt seasoning that would corrupt even the most devout dieter. My first experience would therefore leave anyone with a high expectation of the quality of food produced at the shop. However upon my second visitation my hopes of a delectable stress free family meal were severely dashed. Twenty dollars bought me a so/so hamburger, 3 squashed together gray slimy unappetising pieces of hoki with batter falling off and soggy uncooked absolutely flavourless chips. May I note that my second purchase occurred at 6.00 pm on an only averagely busy Thursday night. My only hope is that the Drunken Crayfish’s quality of food improves and becomes more consistent for other fish and chips fans; however I will not buy food from the Drunken Crayfish again.
