Review Suk Jai Thai Restaurant - Whangarei

Rosie
Something about their coconut is quite delectable as recommended by my friend. Their wait staff is courteous and helpful, the seating and atmosphere feels quite grand, and dishes are very tasty and well done. Decent price for the quality and amount, feeling very well fed and content. Busy atmosphere yet the seating feels intimate and not too squeezed together. A gem of Whangarei!

The staff were quick to clear and clean our table just as the previous customers were leaving it. The staff were focused on ensuring all customers had their needs met and staff communication was good. The food was delivered quickly and was absolutely delicious. There was a good selection of beverages, alcoholic and non alcoholic, that went well with our food. The outdoor area was brightly decorated and the music was relaxing. Highly recommend for people who want a delicious and no fuss meal experience. Thank you to all of the staff for the experience 😊

What a wonderful experience. The service was amazing, calm, friendly, positive, professional and fast. The food and delivery was divine also. We had a mango smoothie and a strawberry smoothie but delicious and also entrees, Chicken Pad Thai and the Sizzling plate. Book in early because it was packed and busy all the time. We will definitely be back! A+

Me and my boyfriend went here for dinner and it was absolutely delicious. It was his first time here and he literally loved it. If he wasn’t so full, he would’ve gotten another plate. What a hungus… But overall, 10/10. I always get Peanut sauce and its sweet, flavourful taste always leaves me satisfied. My boyfriend also really recommends the Mussamun beef curry. Staff are very nice too 😊

Arrived 15 min early to order takeway. The only front of house lady let me in and took my order. The kitchen staff were already in full preparation. Had my order within 10min. Delicious.

Wish I had tried this place sooner.. Best takeaway I’ve had in years! Panang suk jai was especially delicious. Also beef drunken noodles, chicken satay sticks and crispy pentagon. Thank you.

Great value for such authentic food. And staff so nice. Will be back everytime I'm in town for the panang suk Jai 🙂

We had a nice Valentine's dinner here, but was a little disappointed in the service level. No one checked to see if our meal was ok. The steamed rice was a bit dry. But, the Pentagons and the Roast Duck was delicious.

The best Thai in Whangarei! We had to stop over from our long trip and found this hidden gem. Luckily, they were still open at 9pm. Lovely staff quick service and delicious food! Highly recommended the Panang Suk Jai (thanks Shanice!) and tom yum soup. Would love to comeback here.

The food is yummy, not spicy at all for spicy food lovers.

Charn, his penguin and the rest of the team have created an awesome atmosphere with the best thai food in town. Absolutely brilliant customer service and delicious food every time we have been there. Cannot recommend them enough!

I am about to open up my own Thai restaurant in Wellington. I went to learn the ropes from the best in the business. Nong Charn and his family are very accommodating and taught me all I need to know about running a successful business with the yummiest Thai. I am also a cook and only go to the best! Highly recommend Suk Jai Thai. Great food, great atmosphere and super service.

Really nice place, great staff, and fantastic food. This is our first time at the restaurant, and we had chicken satay sticks for starters, Suk Jai Duck with jasmin rice, and Egg fired vegetable rice for mains, washed down with a Singha beer and a glass of Old Coach Road chardonnay. The food is not expensive, good sized portions, and a nice eating environment. I recommend this place and will certainly revisit next time I'm in town.

We celebrated our first wedding anniversary holiday by travelling first time north to Whangarei. Once we reached, we opted for Suk Jai Thai Restaurant for our dinner after referred Trip Advisor top ten recommendations. After our dinner, Charn who's probably the Restaurant manager here gave us free ice cream + fried banana for our dessert, on top of that advised us where to go in Whangarei during our journey here. Food is delicious and price is reasonable. Can get local beer Singha or Chang for $6 only. Will definitely come back here if we drop by in Whangarei again next time.

The best Thai food in town, by miles. And great service, every time. Also has the best atmosphere compared to the others . Always full, which is saying something.
Monique Haworth de Beurs
One of the yummiest Thai places I have been to. Flavours and combinations are perfect. Good service and decent prices too. Well done. The penguin even dined with us

We really enjoyed the food. Very tasty & well presented. Even though it was a busy lunchtime the service was fast & efficient. The food was well priced also. Well worth a visit.

Always seems to be busy no matter what day of the week it is, that tells you how good it is, I recommend the dish 'Panang Suk Jai'

We decided to try this place on our pit stop and were very impressed. The service was very efficient- we were especially content with how promptly the food came out despite the restaurant being completely full. The food was absolutely delicious. Keen to stop by again on our way home 😊👌

I am from Auckland but have been here several times. Better than most places in Auckland! I have tried their pad thai, cashew nut, oyster, basil, tom yum soup, red curry n green curry and it was all beautiful. Highly recommend this place. All friends that visited with me were super impressed. My 3 year old that doesnt really like eating meat ate the oyster beef with a smile.
Hungry Teddy (20% Zomato Gold, Use : HUNG2716)
Delicious. We ordered the pad thai, money gold, and the curry. All tasted great. Portion was a bit smaller than we hoped for, but we were quite happy with it.
Karen
This is a must visit everytime I visit Whangarei - the food is always delicious, fresh and top quality! The service is top notch and this restaurant is one of the best Thai restaurants and I have tried many!

This place is superb in every way. The service is friendly, the food is scrumptious and totally reasonably priced. My husband and I just love this restaurant. We go as often as we can for our date night and last went there in May 2014
Leon
Bit Pricey but excellent food. Lovely waiting staff.
We had takeaway Panang curry - mouth is watering just thinking about it.

Highly recommended!

I'd eat there every day if I could afford it.

Our first time at Suk Jai celebrating our wedding anniversary, i was passing and decided to take a menu pamphlet. The food looked great so we decided to make a booking. Excellent service and very attentive and so polite, the food was spectacular and full of flavour. This is our fave place, the price of food isnt expensive at all. We cant wait to share this wonderful dining experience with friends and family very soon. Thankyou Suk Jai Thai.

We eat regularly at Suk Jai. We have visited Thailand many times and just love the taste of Thai cuisine. Whangarei is so lucky to have a restaurant with such high quality Thai Food and excellent service. It is not surprising that they were presented with an award from the Prime Minister of Thailand earlier this year. Well done Charn and your team. Our favourites are; Tom Yum Prawn Soup, Mussamun Beef Curry, Garlic Pepper Prawns and Vegetables, Prawn cakes, Oyster Sauce Beef and Vegetables, Som Tum Grilled Salmon Salad and not forgetting the best chicken satay sticks ever. Highly recommend the Typhoon Cocktail and Chang Beer This restaurant is a MUST family even travel from Auckland to eat here when they can! Suggest you book as this restaurant is often full.

Having eaten Thai food all over the world, I can honestly say that Suk Jai Thai is up there with the best.

As a result of a business trip in Whangarei, this Thai restaurant was recommended as one of many options for dinner. After checking out the reviews below, and taking each review on its own merit, the 'proof was definately in the pudding' so to speak.

First impressions; the place was almost full. I was lucky to get the last table (this on a Wednesday night at 7pm). Always a good sign when a restaurant is full of diners.

Pricing - about the going rate in comparison to other Thai restaurants I've eaten at.

Service - friendly, quick. What every diner would like.

Quality - absolutely beautiful! I had the mixed entree (money bags, chicken skewer, Thai cakes and sorry but can't remember the name of the last one). For my main, I had one of the duck stir fries with rice. DEVINE! And a couple of Singha's. Total price - $42.50.

Quantity - I walked feeling very full, content and very happy.

Overall, I would thoroughly recommend this restaurant. Well done Suk Jai Thai. Keep up the good work and well see you next time I'm in Whangarei.

My husband Don and I and various groups of friends go to this restaurant often - the staff are very welcoming, the food is exquisite and the service the best in Whangarei.
The overall experience makes us go back again and again and when we have out of town visitors this is the only place we will go.
In fact going again for lunch tomorrow.
Well done to you all at Suk Jai.
Cheers thank you for coming to Whangarei.

We visited this Thai restaurant when on business from Auckland at the end of last year and sorry I haven't written my review sooner. This is a fantastic Thai spot for lunch or dinner.
There were four of us for dinner.
The place was pretty busy and filling up fast, but luckily we were able to get a table immediately.
The service while a little slow in the hectic environment was unfailingly polite, friendly and we didn't care about how long things took as the service was just so nice.
We had beer and entrees followed up by our mains.
Every single meal was delicious and there was nothing to fault with the food.
I wouldn't hesitate to come back, and would absolutely recommend others give Suk Jai Thai a go. You may find it a busy hectic environment to dine in, but it adds to the fun and the entertainment.
All the other diners around us looked as happy as we were and there were smiles all around.

Back yet again today for another great lunch. The squid entree was as tender as and the pork ginger main was as good as ever. Really love this place and everyone we have gone along with has returned or is going to as they were so impressed. But what a surprise today, Charn the owners' son came out and gave us a lovely desert for the 3 of us as he had seen Pat and I had recently (earlier this week) celebrated our 42nd wedding anniversary. This really nice host had that special touch for us and we so much appreciated it. It's so nice to be spoilt by some of our great hospitality operators in Whangarei. It is noticed. We will be back yet again.

This is a fantastic restaurant and a wonderful place to socialise with friends and family. I have been dining at this restaurant for sometime now. I was familiar with the previous owners and have gotten to know the new owners. The standard of food and service at this restaurant is very high. The atmosphere is ideal for luncheons and dinners. I have been going there weekly. I have dinned there with large groups and small groups. The service is always first rate. I have never felt pressured to leave the restaurant and certainly no one has ever handed me, or any of my friends, a bill at the table. This restaurant cannot be faulted. The new staff are intelligent, friendly, courteous, and polite people. The new owners are warm and amiable people. This restaurant continues to offer a fantastic service. The food is absolutely delicious. I believe they have the most competitive prices in town. The portions are very generous but most important are very tasty. They use very fresh ingredients and the rice is very high quality. You will not get better value for money in Whangarei. I have no hesitation in recommending this restaurant to anyone.

Used to be fantastic under the previous owners. NOW MUCH SMALLER PORTIONS. As in much much smaller portions and they can't wait to clear your plates away and get you out the door after giving you the bill to which they always seem to make 'oh hahahah mistake....oh...sorry...hahaha'. They had only put the food down in front of one of us who then got up to use the facilities and the waiter tried to take the food away- it hadn't been touched in 30 seconds so obviously needed to be cleared away..... The money bags are disgusting with the mixed vegetables in them and the sauce used for dipping is like vinegar. What happened to the gorgeous clear plum sauce????? New owners. Okay. But LOUSY SERVICE and the food is really mediocre. It used to be "our special place" once or sometimes twice a week. Not any more. We are taking our $$$$$ back to our favourite Thai restaurant. We were asked by the former owners to support the new owners from Christchurch. We have tried. Sorry, won't be back. And people please do not be so greedy as to have people dining in your waiting area. Totally inexcusable. Your reputation is taking a hammering because of your greed. Small portions. "Mistakes' on the bill. Stop and think about where you are now. Whangarei. Small. Local and people talk. And recommend or advise great restaurants to others. Your restaurant is being noticed for all the wrong reasons.

We went on Saturday night, maybe that was the mistake. The place was packed like sardines, we had a 40min wait between starter and main which was made worse by no one offering us another drink in between. That aside, the food was absolutely delicious. My husband had the fish and I had the garlic beef, just wish we had ordered out instead.

After realising our favourite restaurant in Christchurch had closed after the Feb 22nd earthquake we were gutted, however after organising a trip to tour the amazing Northland we were delighted to find out that they had moved to Whangarei. We called in for lunch on our way north and found the restaurant we loved in Christchurch was even better, a much nicer environment very bright, clean and one day a fantastic outdoor area. We enjoyed the same food that we remember so much we came back for dinner on the way back south. I really hope the locals enjoy it as much as we have over the years!

What a big disappointment. I've been dining and buying take-outs from Suk Jai since they opened. They closed recently (for renovations they say) so was looking forward to them reopening, which they did on Monday. Me and hubby were looking forward to our Thai fix on Tuesday night, only to find our usual Pad Thai had totally changed. I noticed it immediately when we went to pick up our dinner. I looked at it and said "it's different", the guy behind the counter said what's different, I said this ain't the same pad Thai I've been buying all this time. He explained that they had a new chef and that I would like it even more. Well I didn't, in fact it was the worst one I've had yet. Why would you change something that worked so well?? Need to find me a new Thai restaurant. Damn

Lovely clean and well presented space, and what appeared to be a charming courtyard area outside (but this evening it was pelting down with rain). The place was packed to capcity (around 40 - 45 diners) and is clearly popular. We were greeted, and took a seat at our table (waitress was too busy at the counter to seat us and give us menus at that point). There in followed a lengthy wait for menus, when they came it was with a pleasant apology for the wait. We ordered entrees each and two mains and a couple of beers. The entrees were excellent and boded well for our main meals. We had quite a wait for our mains and when they came they looked beautifully colourful and fresh BUT we had both asked for Medium heat and they lacked any trace of spice - mild at best. This is the main reason I have only given three stars. The other reason is despite the restaurant emptying out we sat for ages with our plates uncleared after our mains. In the end we gave up and went up to pay. They are very pleasant and polite, but need to speed the service up a little. I hear it has been sold so will go back in a few months to see if the new owners have turned up the heat a bit.

This would be the cleanest, tidiest Thai restaurant I have eaten in. Food is amazing - they have one me over with their curries and my wife is enjoying them also. Service is also amazing - would recommend totally. Has now become a weekly event for lunch, but have had dinner here as well. Lunch for $10.50 - buy a sandwich and a cake and see what that costs you.

Fantastic Thai restaurant right in Whangarei. We have eaten at them all - three in Whangarei and one in Russell and this is the best. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming and the restaurant is spotlessly clean. The food is amazing - fresh and hot and the staff faultless. We are regulars there and the staff give us a warm welcome and offer our bottle of wine that we always have upon arrival. They even remember our favourite dishes which is fantastic.
Highly recommended for a night out. Even when the restaurant is full with large groups as a couple you don't feel out of place. It is worth a visit. You won't be sorry.

Four of us went to Suk Jai 22.2.12 and we all had different entrees/soups and mains. We all sampled each others and every single meal was superb. Their soups are a MUST to try.We have spent quite a lot of time in Thailand and never had better than this.
The service was excellent, the surroundings pleasant, and all for $120 for the four of us.
This was a second time for us at Suk Jai's and I know that we will become regulars.

Ok, I'm no food critic but I love great food and flavours, as a mum of four I have created many different dishes to present to my family. Any way... this was my first time having authentic Thai food, and I loved it. We had a large group booking, and we all loved the food so much many of us have been back with our families. The food is flavour-full yet mild enough for the littlies, so if you like it hot then order hot. The service was wonderful and the staff are kind and courteous. A great atmosphere for any kind of dinner date. You must try.... I'm taking my kids tonight to see what they think as they love great food too, I'm sure they'll love it.
Rachel Fuller
Suk Jai is the best Thai food I have had in Whangarei or anywhere else for that matter! Lovely fresh tasting ingredients. Flavours refined. Very friendly and efficient service. Can't recommend highly enough.
Ash Palmer
I went here with my partner after getting a deal voucher. It was an awesome experience! This is definitely the best Thai in Whangarei in my opinion (and we have tried the others numerous times)....
We had the Gari Puffs as an entree which had a great filling. We then had mains of Duck and Cashew nuts and Beef Panaeng...both of which were delux (some of the best duck i have had in a long time)!! Note that we ordered medium to hot for the curry but will definitely order hot in future as it was pretty mild...great flavour though!
Leaving leftovers for lunch the next day we opted to share a dessert to finish things off and ordered the banana and sticky rice. We love the mango and sticky rice when we are in Thailand and this did not dissapoint! For those of you who havent tried this it is a must....the coconut cream, rice and banana combo is the business and it's served with icecream to tops it off.

Saw this new restaurant had opened. Fully booked first night, so got takeaways a few nights later. They are a little disorganized, at takeaways anyway, but very helpful.
Food is beautiful. not too hot (not keen on over spicy).
Returned a week later, the restaurant filled up in front of my eyes. Takeaways were fabulous again.
Looking forward to actually going and sitting in the restaurant. I recommend you give it a try.
