Review The Quay - Whangarei

Food was really really good. Beautiful, varied menu with new things on it since our last visit. Staff were quick, friendly and efficient. We asked to be seated in the sun and then about 45 minutes later I told my husband he looked a bit hot. A waiter appeared with an umbrella two seconds later. The coffee was beautiful, the martini was lovely, we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and got what we paid for. This is the perfect place to bring visitors, family or a date ❤️

Great restaurant with fantastic food and friendly staff. We (3) first went for dinner where we had the lamb rump and the beef fillet with kumara sides and eggplant starter to share, all were delicious, the beef in particular was the best I'd had in a long time, cooked to perfection 🥰 We were so happy we returned for brunch the day after as the truffle pig called to us! Again delicious😋

Great place at that the Small marina - nice tables outside on the waterfront with attentive service and really good food. They have a wide selection of classics - but also great pizza with surprisingly different flavors and varieties. Enjoy cocktails and drinks with them too and spend some quality time there.

I was treated to a meal at The Quay by somebody who eats there fairly frequently. I think myself very lucky! The initial impression was good, the service was very good (and respectful of two friends who were catching up after 2 years of not seeing each other), and the food plentiful and tasty. Main courses ranged from about $38-$44 and I felt were of value. The merlot, Rivers Retreat, was a nice wine. Busy.......and I can understand why. The team worked well together and made the evening very pleasant.

Delicious food, great service and a lovely atmosphere. It was really busy for a moody Tuesday night too so it must good consistently, I must confess this was my first visit. The cocktails looked amazing and I definitely would have had one if I hadn't been driving.

Over from Australia visiting Family and Friends. this is THE BEST Whangarei can offer. Had Lunch on Thursday with a Friend; went back that night for Dinner with other Friends. Food is delicious and the service and staff are awesome.

Wonderful setting right on the waterfront. Delicious French house red, so that's always a winner 😄 Very busy on weekends so bookings a must. Friendly wait staff and the food was scrumptious. We all ate something different and all 4 of us thoroughly enjoyed our meals. Recommend for sure

We ate here on Wednesday evening. The atmosphere inside is lovely and quaint. The service is absolutely exceptional and the service staff are knowledgeable about their menu and are able to make excellent suggestions and wine pairings. The food, is magnificent. I had the wagyu rump steak, cooked perfectly to medium rare and served alongside some fresh root vegetables, and a nice jus. Absolutely stunning, couldn't recommend the quay highly enough as whangarei's top restaurant.

Beautiful view and atmosphere! Great service, friendly and helpful staff. We enjoyed our breakfast and coffee!

Great setting, but having reserved a table and waited half an hour because the kitchen clearly was under pressure, it was disappointing when we waited a further 40 minutes for the food to arrive. The food looked great, but the fish had been waiting under a heat lamp for too long and was not as hot as it should have been. Taste and presentation were lovely, though. Clearly, it was just an off day.

We dined at The Quay on a busy Saturday afternoon. Despite the crowd, the service as prompt and friendly. The restaurant was warm, clean and very cosy. We ordered the Smoked Brisket ($27); the Vegan Beetroot Falafel pita ($27); the Pig Out pizza ($29); and the Tasting Plate ($39). There is not much to fault on the food. Everything was fresh and tasty, and the portion sizes were reasonable. I do think it was unreasonable that we were charged $2.50pp for bringing a cake considering our group spent $240 with them.

The restaurant has a good atmosphere and is in a great location, with views over the waterfront if sitting outside. I had the bread and dips with the chicken liver parfait starter and the pig out pizza, both were excellent. I highly recommend coming here to anyone, whether visiting or resident

We were gifted a voucher from our Agent Minda from Ray White as a thank you... My Husband and I really enjoyed our evening. We sat on the deck and enjoyed a wonderful meal, and delicious dessert. Our waitress was attentive but did not hover. Overall it was a wonderful night out.

Great in every respect. Slick service and gorgeous food so well presented. We are not locals but would be back if we were. Black pepper squid, seafood chowder and beetroot falafels...

Yeah. No. Trainee waitress whose first assigned shift a Saturday night? Dropped plates, spoons, unable to correctly pour a glass of wine? No. Sorry. As for the food, dry dry dry or salty! The pork belly was dry. The duck confit was dry, the pizza was overcooked to almost being a cracker (simply inedible crusts) and the gnocchi were salty. The first two were uninspired, the pizza was at least tasty in that the flavours worked (Goa) but the gnocchi were not a dish so much as... I don't even know. Bad? Yeah. Would I come back? No. Was the service good? Nope. Was it expensive for the experience? Very.

Not a good experience this time. The food was below average. Before Christmas we had a work function we attended and everything was top notch including the steak. Last night I ordered steak medium rare and it came out well done. It was also grey, didn't have much flavour and was very fatty. The person dining with me experienced the same. Certainly not worth it for the price paid to the point where we left early and skipped desserts and cocktails. Won't be recommending this place again.

Not a good experience guys. I had the steak meal last time and it was amazing, I told all my friends. I went there tonight with my wife and a friend from Hamilton. They both ordered the steak on my recommendation. They both ordered medium rare, both recieved well done (almost grey) and to top it off my friend had fat all through out her steak. Over half the steak was left on the plate, we told the waiter and all we got was an apology and nothing else. It was embarrassing as I recommended this place and the steak meal.

My partner loved his meal which was the pork belly, I got the chicken Thai dish, chicken was beautiful but was served with over powerd curry clumpy noodles with raisins which wasn't very appealing, made me feel a bit unwell after eating it, service was good from what looked to be management but the younger girls weren't very knowledgeable couldn't even answer simple things like what coffee beans they use and other enquires we had, overall I would go there again view and setting is beautiful. 🙂

Went for coffee just after 6pm. Staff very friendly and helpful, however, coffee was only just warm. Very disappointing. I have had some lovely visits, coffee, and meals, but am finding attention to food prep not so good. Quay, you are slipping, visited the Dune at Mangawhai last weekend and not impressed with them either, food preparation left a lot to be desired, along with inexperienced staff. Its a shame, you could do so much better and keep clientele. I'm not sure I'll consider either place again? Its a shame as they both have a lovely atmosphere.

Dad’s birthday, one to be forgotten.. Only good thing about this place is Mikey, the waiter and the entrees - didn’t have the beer in stock we wanted (along with lots of others rattled off) - Couldn’t do soda and lime as out of stock of limes (was also charged extra for the lime cordial added to the soda) - Beer selected comes out and is poured, both bottles are out of date - Salmon special has been changed and waiter not advised. Nothing like what we were told (and is small, over cooked and not worth $35) - Gnocchi is not gnocchi, possibly would pass for a half baked scone and one serving came out swimming in oil. Returned to the kitchen and told ‘what would you like the chef to do about it’ it was apparently the ‘butter sauce’ - not sure when butter started tasting like olive oil Overall for the cost I would have expected a hell of a lot more. The mains were passable at best. Would not recommend and will not return.

Hands down the BEST gnocchi I’ve ever ever had!! We had a wonderful family meal and we all thoroughly enjoyed our food, service and all round atmosphere, we highly recommend to all!

Saw the menu on Facebook, yes is time to have a night out dining ( we do not do this often). The service was great ladies, the food was amazing with one little oops (small green caterpillar on my pawn toast lettuce leaf), this did not dampen my night out nor did I make a fuss or complain but the waitress when I showed her and said just a heads up check the lettuce leaves ( yes I know they grow their own produce), quickly told me to stop eating and whisked it away to be replaced, neither asked for or expected this - so thank you for second entree. Our meals were fantastic, black & blue tuna entree, small warm veg salad, 2 pawn toast entrees plus one extra, 2 steaks cooked perfectly, fish of the day - salmon so good, braised lamb, pig out pizza, baked cheese cake, jelly panna cotta and lots of drinks, so thank you everyone.

We had a wonderful meal at The Quay last night. The Chicken parfait was divine and my Scotch fillet was huge and cooked to perfection. The staff were excellent. We had 2 to 3 staff waiting on our table and their service was friendly and attentive. We are looking forward to going back.

For of us went on Sunday night the water we had was tepid but u find this in most restuarants I've been in my husband ask for oysters which were on the menu waitress said they had none but will have some on tuesday he also ordered lion red but they didn't have any and my daughter ordered a desert that was on menu but they didn't have any food that we did have was ok. The service was satisfactory

We were passing through and stopped in for lunch. Awesome food and amazing staff. Service was really quick and they even put a candle in the dessert for my wife's birthday

Awful pork sirloin. Very dry and no sauce. The swede chips were overcooked and sluglike, so not al dente as expected. The red cabbage was gritty but at least tasted okay. The menu is very limited and after a disagreement with the waiter who didn't want to help we left to have our dessert elsewhere.

Went here for dinner. The food was good. But they had things on the menu that they didn't have it was like you asked for something and it was sorry we don't have it. Service was good. Prices were terrible and when you paid they didn't give you a list of what you are paying for So all in all wouldn't go back there.

We enjoyed our meal last night although my medium rare steak was more rare than expected. The rest of the meal was delicious. The service was great and friendly. Although it was a Tuesday night the restaurant was quite full and busy. A big thanks to our waiter, Jay! Keep up the good work, we enjoyed your banter and laughter!

An awesome atmosphere... great food & Kevin was the best waiter/customer service provider I've experienced in a long time, so refreshing, enjoy your time in Whangarei

Met friends for drinks after work on Friday. Great selection of wines. Excellent service. We weren't rushed, even though we were at a table and only ordered a few snacks with drinks. Great view of the water. Often go to the Quay for lunch or breakfast and the service and standard is always great.

Disappointing experience last night. We had booked a table for 3 at 7pm. No mention of wait time when we arrived. Ordered pate for 3. It arrived with 2 pieces of bread. Sometime later a waitress noticed and asked if we would like another piece of bread. We agreed. Shocked to find it on bill for an extra $3. Come on guys. Ridiculous. Had to ask for wine list - really! Then waited 90 mins for our meal by which time one of our group was totally over it and only ate half of it. Public be warned.

We had the best view, staff were very attentive, friendly, well mannered. Food was amazing! Thank you for a wonderful time 😀
