Review Mokaba Cafe - Whangarei

This is a great cafe in a beautiful setting. Love the art building next doors and the harbor views. The eggs benedict was delicious.

Nice staff and the food did take a while to come, but it was busy. The food was very good when it came.

Great coffee, Decent eggs Benny. Nice outdoor area that is covered with heaters provided. Always a good spot on Sunday for a delicious breakfast before or after a walk. Highly recommend.

I’m just in awe, if you want to have the experience of the life time go to Mokaba Cafe. The staff are brilliant, warm and joyful. I was greeted by this amazing lady and asked her what she recommends (as it was my first time going there) and wow just wow her reference she gave me was amazing, food was cooked superbly and I highly recommend going there for a first date or just a chill day out. The price is so affordable, I got myself a large hot chocolate and a lovely breakfast to go with it for only $25!!!

Great location, very good service. Additional items not on the menu inside.

Amazing food, amazing coffee, amazing service. A constant go to place. Always accommodating to dietary requirements, alternative milks etc.

Good food at a good price. The only difficulty is that there is no table service so you need to queue up to order if it's busy. Pretty relaxed atmosphere.

Food is great, big serving. Ambience is nice. Al fresco dining. Will definitely dine again when I come back here at Whangarei

Came here for breakfast this Saturday morning, about a half-hour after opening. Not busy, and plenty of parking still available. My son is allergic to dairy and eggs, and the staff were very helpful with our questions about allergens. I ordered the eggs benedict with bacon. Eggs were poached perfectly, bacon was crispy and not burnt. I'm personally not a fan of mesclun /rocket on my eggs bene. Everyone else loved their food. They have indoor and outdoor sheltered seating which we made use of.

Excellent Cafe next door to the Hundertwasser Art Centre in Whangarei. We were able to book a table for a large group and pre-order our food. Great service and big portions of food. Entrance is via the water side, if the Shop by the carpark is not open. Lovely coffee too

Very busy, with limited staff, which was understandable when service was slow. Food was yum. Staff was friendly, even though they were under pressure. Lovely belated birthday treat.

Amazing customer service. They were all so friendly and welcoming. Nice atmosphere on a cold day and delicious food and coffee. Will definitely be back 😋

This cafe is world class. Michelin rated food. Superb coffee. Brilliant service. We had the seafood marinara and this was as good as anything I've had in Italy. 3 kids meals and mini hotdogs were the best in the town basin area. Highly recommend the side salads too and garnish.

Amazing food, and the waiter Isaac gave wonderful service, made you feel comfortable and welcome! Definitely recommend, and the food was super quick too

A whole gluten free menu (plus at least half a dozen gluten free cakes in the cabinet). Fast service and yummy food. Two thumbs up!!

Great quick friendly service and nice food. Getting a bit pricey but what food isn’t these days. Still a great spot at the town basin.

Excellent service and a delicious menu to choose from ! I recommend the paleo breakfast!!

Hubby spoilt for choice with gluten free. Appreciated the waitress not clearing the table while we were still drinking. She was also very pleasant & offered us more water for our coffee.

Great place! great food and coffee, a relaxing atmosphere, with good staff

What great service, table of 10 and served very quickly. Lovely food, great variety and a little different. We all enjoyed!!!

Nice food and service. Still can't work out why coffees or drinks don't come out with the food but otherwise, I think they coped really well with the numbers generated by the Lions Tour. Lots of extra visitors.

I arrived in Whangarei on the 31/12 early afternoon, after a reasonable trip from Paeroa. Having not stopped along the way for Lunch thought I would try this cafe. It was obvious from the queue that this was a popular eating place. I finally got to the chap behind the 'till' to order, I was told there was around 30-40 mins wait as the kitchen was very busy, not a problem I said as long as I could have a coffee sooner that that, yes he said. So I gave my order from the menu, Sweetcorn fritters. Sure enough the coffee was fairly prompt, great!! Probably 35 mins later the meal came, It looked nice but was tasteless!! The fritters were swamped in bland Hollandaise sauce (who puts hollandaise sauce on sweetcorn fritters) surely something like sweet chilli sauce would be a better choice (and on the side, maybe in a wee jug?) The fritters were really tasteless, no seasoning that I could taste and the consistency was 'cakey' I ate the meal because I was hungry and I did not want to have a hassle as I was tired. However I feel that the recipe should be looked at. I did enjoy the coffee and the ambience of my surroundings, but definitely not the meal!!

I usually LOVE this place, but the last couple of visits have been less than great. Last time, I ordered French Toast with Maple syrup. They brought it out with golden syrup. Refired but hubby had to eat without me. Today, an overcooked eggs bene, a crooked fork, a Caesar salad instead of a pumpkin salad, and iced coffees instead of the ordered iced chocolates. All eventually fixed, but so not like the usual high standards of this place. I hope for better should we decide to come again...

Was there yesterday and meals long finished before drinks (luke warm) came out..food was nice and service great.

It's the best cafe in the world except for riverside cafe.

Extra impressed today at the handling of a very difficult customer that I would have chucked out from the beginning. A very rude lady taking up a table for hours, only ordering hot water and abusing/ ordering around staff, making a scene. If she "writes to the paper," as she threatened I will gladly reply that you all handled her so well, were not at all rude back and had the patience of saints. Well done. Love this place.

Waited for food to long drink was forgotten

Had a very nice lunch today. Good service and good coffee despite the fact that it was so busy. Would love the recipe for the frittata or at least the secret on how to make it so lovely and moist.

A great night out for National Poetry Day. Thanks so much staff for hosting us.

Nice coffee and nice scone, but don't go there for the WIFI. We got one password for two people, it could only be used on one device at a time, and it is only 100mb.

Service is slow & food is plastic. Gone down hill bad since the new owners took over. I used to take my customers there all day the time, but not anymore.
Maureen Gwillim
Great coffee great service with a smile, yummy food, clean!

This is a pearl in Whangarei, the food is awesome, the coffee is great especially one girl in particular, Lia. She consistantly makes awesome coffee and I am very, very particular about my coffee. My partner and i go every weekend and will continue because it is soooo good.

Great place, nice and clean. Staff are friendly and helpful. Food is well presented cafe food using good quality product. Like the new outdoor blinds to protect from the elements while still enjoying the great view. This place is always busy because it is good consistently. Staff have no problem with special requests or modifications to the dish to cater for individual tastes.
Hopefully they can make the old Mondos into something worth a visit!

We decided to go to Mokaba for Fathers Day brunch and sadly left very disappointed with the entire experience. It was busy but not full and we had to wait over 40 minutes for our breakfast to turn up. When it arrived 2 of the meals had eggs done incorrectly... when they returned with what we ordered they were put on bread, which of course was soggy. The menu stated TOAST but they were on bread. Again it was sent back. THIRD TIME LUCKY - We shouldn't have to have our food served to us 3 times, and certainly shouldn't have to wait an unacceptable amount of time for brunch. We will not be returning to Mokaba.

Always good food! We go to Mokaba every time we have visitors in town or want a special place to have tea. Sometimes the service is a bit slow, but always friendly. Especially love the variety of muffins--go on different days and have a new variety to try. Their savoury muffins are the best!

Chose Mokaba Cafe today, presentation in cafe good, waited 20 minutes for our coffee, another 5 for my friends burger (fair enough it must be cooked) but an alarming grand total of 35 minutes for a tart, pre made and on display. I had to enquire before the missing purchase was discovered. I would expect a desert which is not heated and pre made to be provided along side the coffee rather than 35 minutes later.

The burger can do with mayo or some condiment. Very dry & bland

A great café in a prime location overlooking the town basin, we had stopped here previously and although the food and service were fine there was nothing that made it stand out from the crowd. We had heard new owners had recently taken over so decided to pay another visit.

What a transformation! The place had been redecorated and is now airy and bright, the menu is extensive and interesting and the service is attentive and cheerful. We had the big breakfast which was a large plate of high quality food and there was no problem when we asked for some of the standard items to be changed.

We will definitely be back and look forward to sampling the contents of the fabulous cake and desert cabinet.

After a bit of a bad start with getting the wrong toast, things improved. They quickly resolved the problem with a smile and the poached eggs were some of the best I have tasted.

The coffee was good and you can sit in the sun by the water and drink it.

Not Worth hunting out, but ok if you are walking past.

Quite a nice little place. Been a few times and it's always been ok. Heard it's got a new owner so hoping for something a bit different now. So many cafes in Whangarei follow the same format - paninis, muffins and the all day breakfasts. Let's see something new! Let's see some more veggie options! Let's see less ham/bacon! Also a fold down change table in the toilets would be a great addition and make it more popular with the mummas who do lunch : )

Went to Mokaba this morning for brunch service was good and food was quick - but that was where it stopped - we both had eggs Benedict with hollandaise sauce, one with bacon and one with avocado it was bland and the sauce was like it was from a packet! we didn't even finish them, we walked down the road and went and got smoothies instead

I am a regular at Mokaba in Town Basin. Always intrigued by the tasty food, great coffee and excellent customer service in a nice location and setup. Highly recommended to anyone who wants to dine out during the day.

Had brunch @ Mokaba last week, the service was great, the food was very tasty and good value, the coffee did let them down however - I couldn't finish it, it was over extracted and bitter. It was a busy place, and seemed to have a good atmosphere, I would definitely go back, but might have a tea next time.

Best coffee in town - well roasted NZ Chiasso coffee from Devonport and the baked goodies not only look great but are really tasty!
