Review Sangam Indian Cuisine - Whitianga

Dave Rose
This is a great Indian restaurant in Whitianga. I went with a large group of people this was not an issue with the staff and the service was fantastic. Within the group we had a wide range of different meals and entrees all of them were well-presented came out together and were very well received. These meals were excellent value and good quality. This the restaurant I could recommend to return to.

I had come here with my partner, and all I can say is great things. Service and food were both of a very high standard. From the curries to fried rice to Naan and Lassi. Everything was exquisite, we'd both like to highly recommend and thank this restaurant

A very beautiful restaurant. We came across this place while walking down the street. Thought to try it out. We did not regret it. The food and atmosphere was amazing. I ordered a chicken fried rice and my partner got mushroom masala and butter naan. All were delicious. The naan was soft and full of flavour and the mushroom masala was absolutely amazing. The fried rice was full of flavour and nicely spiced just how I wanted it . Highly recommend this place

Loved the look of the menu and was not disappointed at all. We loved the vegetarian mixed entree, then adored the goat curry and lamb saagwala. Great atmosphere, friendly service, highly recommend

This food is a favourite so far we’ve travelled New Zealand for a few months and we couldn’t find the most traditional Indian cuisine and we found it in whitianga!! Definitely come try their amazing food 🥘

I highly recommend this restaurant. I had Lamb Sagwalla and was hesitating between mild and medium hot. The chef managed to bring out flavors beautifully without the meal being too hot. Lamb was tender and succulent. Only downside at all - the Syrah had been too long opened - the food made up for that. My daughter fully enjoyed the vegetarian dish she chose

We found this only indian restaurant when we went out for a day out in Whitianga. Must say, the food was great, the service was awesome. Overall, it was a good experience to be in that restaurant. On duty manager Mr. Stephan was doing great job in handling the customers.

Amazing service, excellent food, highly recommended! The hot brownie was absolutely delicious. If you're in Whitianga, Sangam is a 'must visit'.

Been coming to sangam for over a year now can’t get over how good the food is I’ve always manage to try something new when I come. Lovey atmosphere with beautiful music and super nice staff

Very nice food. We had lamb rogan josh chicken Tikka marsala, chicken korma and vegetables. The serves were generous, and the taste very nice. Great place to take the kids, and good for a feed before hitting the pub for some drinks. I reccomend.

We ordered dinner for 60 adults from Atul and the Team at Sangam Indian Cuisine. It was absolutely delicious, great portions, full of flavour and spice, packaged beautifully and was still warm when we received it. Because we were staying in Flaxmilly Bay across the harbour, Atul arranged to meet us at the Ferry with our order so it was still hot, when we served our guests. They went the extra mile and the food was EXCELLENT. We recommend Sangam and we would definitely order from them again. Well done Sangam!

Just had a marvelous dinner (28/04/2023), we both tried a different menu than what we normally order. We've never been to Sangam, but next time we're in Whitianga, we'll be back, complements to the chef 👨‍🍳

This was honestly some of the best Indian food that I have ever had, and I’ve eaten Indian food all over the world. Definitely the best I’ve had in New Zealand since moving here in 2016. Their fish tandoori was incredible. The fish was so tender and cooked perfectly. The texture was just right and the green sauce it came with made it that much better. I was pleasantly surprised that it was a bit spicy as well.

I had the Chicken Tikka Masala, Indian medium spicy and it was just the right amount of spicy for me. The chicken was soft and tender and the curry sauce itself was very flavorful. It came with a good portion of rice and I had the garlic cheese naan on the side. I drove an hour out of my way on my road trip because I was craving Indian food, and this place definitely did not disappoint. I will stop by again for sure when I am back in the area.

The staff was very friendly and attentive. They have awesome music videos playing which adds to the overall atmosphere. The restaurant is decorated very tastefully and the bathrooms were nice and clean. Overall I recommend Sangam Indian Cuisine for anyone craving delicious Indian food like I was!

Love love loved the food! Full of flavour & so fresh very impressed! Being massive curry fans ourself! Couldn't fault it! However the service is seriously lacking! We phoned to make a booking as soon as we walked in the waitress first words to us were 'yeah' not how can I help or table for 4!! Our entrées & main meals came out very quickly. We were left waiting with empty plates for 20 minutes for them to be cleared even through the wait staff walked back and forward countless times. Finally one of the waiters got close enough so they could clear our plates & I could ask when our desserts(couple of scoops of ice cream) were coming out the waiter assured as it won't be long. All up we waited 45 minutes for ice cream not impressed. Maybe a customer service court is needed? Would of rated higher is service was better.

Mellissa our waitress was excellent helpful and friendly. She noticed we were little warm half way through meal and opened wide windows for us. This was first time we had eaten here and we were very impressed. Music was a little loud at times otherwise an excellent meal

If I had read the reviews before going to Sangam I wouldn't have gone. However, I didn't check out the restaurant as I usually do.
I had the nicest curry I have ever had, in fact our whole family loved their meals. Roti, nan, curries, raita all yum.
It seems this restaurant is not consistent with its service and food. I guess we were lucky to get them on a really good night.
We frequent Whitianga for holidays so will definitely go again and hope for the same great service and food.

Fantastic! Great flavours, great service. The local palate is slightly milder than other places, given the option of mild, medium or hot I order a hot when I would normally order medium. Once this is understood I believe it to be superior to most.

Absolutely terrible. The food was watery, bland and lacking any true flavor. The naan bread was flabby and appeared to be reheated from frozen. The chicken was tough - a sure sign it had not been marinated and the lamb lacked any depth at all. Service was lacklustre at best and the restaurant was nowhere near capacity.
After years of eating at various Indian restaurants I have to say this is the worst experience I have ever had.

After reading some the reviews I was unsure about eating there but decided to give it a go....Glad I did! Had takeaways the 3 times I've been there & always found the service polite...& the food? - VERY TASTY! The dishes were full of flavor, already looking forward to getting back there.

I'm amazed at some of these reviews. We are from the UK and in the eight years we have been here have never found an Indian restaurant that we really enjoyed - that is until in October we spent the weekend in Whitianga. Ever hopeful we tried Sangam and we thought the food was great. The chicken madras was delicious and for once was not the creamy orangy coconut version they seem to offer in most places in NZ. We returned to Whitianga this weekend and again had a great meal. Our service was great - if our friendly waitress couldn't answer a question then she went and asked the Manager for advice. We look forward to next time.

Without a shadow of doubt the worse Indian restaurant we have ever been too. The waitress knew nothing about the dishes available on the menu and openly admitted that to us when taking our orders. We order a Salt Lassi - it tasted foul and smelt of sulphur, and instead of asking whether we wanted anything else the manager brought the salt out to our table and demand we try the salt ourselves! We had to wait over 1 hour for some onion Bhaji, Dal Makhani and Naan Bread. It tasted very average and really lacked some of the essential flavors and spices that you associate with Indian cooking. After paying I asked whether the restaurant had a feedback book, and the manager said "you didn't like it - well don't come back here again" and stormed into the kitchen; we were amazed (open mouthed) at his reaction. This restaurant should be avoided at all costs.

The food was great! The service needs to be improved. I ordered by phone and when i got there i asked the girl who served us if i could pay for the order separately. She frowned and huffed to herself and kind of made it feel like it was a big trouble asking this. she also got the order wrong twice while i was paying, lucky i checked the price part on the eftpos machine. The order was also short 1 naan bread so i had to wait in the shop while they made another, which kind of defeated the purpose of a phone order.

While the food is superb, the staff need some customer service training. We were the 2nd table there (only a table of 4) and around 4 more tables came after us who were served before us which was annoying and glaringly obvious.

We had to call someone over each time for more drinks.

Recently we celebrated a 30th birthday on a Saturday night in June 2012. A party of 12, and the only large party. The restaurant was 1/2 full. Initially the staff were welcoming and friendly. It was BYO so corkage of $5/bottle was accepted and paid. The meal orders were taken. The Waitress however, was almost rude in her approach when depositing the meals. It was a different staff member who had taken the orders, however, I would have expected her to have reviewed the orders attached to the seating plan. The food was very nice, but 4 of the party had stomach issues overnight. No desert menu or tea/coffee were offered (a loss of money for the business), and a staff member started leaving the entrance door open, thus cold air was blowing in on the party members sitting closest. (frosty night). This kept happening until we all decided to move on at the early hour of 10pm. Very early for a Saturday night.
So all in all, won't frequent that particular restaurant again. We frequent Whitianga often as a holiday destination. Rather disappointed.

Fantastic Valentines dinner the best Indian food I have ever eaten, fast friendly service, generous portions but not over the top. Was topped off with a complimentary dessert which was a nice touch for Valentines day. Thank you Sangam staff! was a lovely evening:)

We have been to this place a number of times over the last 3 years and the meals have always been fine. Like all restaurants in holiday locations the service and food can suffer on those days when they get slammed and overrun.

They do takeaways.

best Indian restaurant in Whitianga.... cos' there aren't any others.
We;ve lived here for 4 years and most of the time the food is great. However, sometimes it can be a bit off with beef curry that tastes like tasteless, watery beef stew and the massala type sauces can all taste the same.
However, that aside, when it's good it's terrific and it's an excellent place for a night out.
My dodgy beef stew won't put me off, I just won't order it again!
The other thing is it is expensive. So take lots of money.

Please avoid at all cost!!

First impressions where wonderful as the initial service was good and the decor was appropriate.

But when I arrived at home with the food I was shocked at the quality.
1. The Naan Bread was burnt, both sides blackened
2. One of the dishes inside the container was filled half with the actual meal and the other half with oil (bout 1-2 cm sitting on top)
3. The other two dishes had no or little taste. Very bland.

Note: We had vegetarian meals.

We rang the manager to tell her about what we had received (We did not shout, say anything abusive or even ask for a refund.) and she answered with
1.We where bias about her food due to being Indian.
2.That they where the best Indian restaurant in New Zealand (NOT IN A LONG SHOT)
3.When we tried to explain that the problems we had, she hanged up.

By this time I wanted to throw what she passed of as food in her face.

As with the service provided above we will never return to this restaurant again. THANKS for RUINING our holidays

great decor - wonderful first impression - but food was very poor. We've been eating Indian food for thirty years and that was the worst lamb saag I can recall. Its a wonderful dish, but this was a poor imitation. My wife had the chana masala which was SALTED so intensely that the curried flavour was killed. Maybe the chef had the night off...it can't always be that bad? Service was average, mainly beacause speed not courtesy was the priority.....lucky they didn't break a plate as the meals crash landed on our table.
Plenty of room for improvement....

Have been to this restaurant on main occasions and also frequently get takeaways and have always been very impressed with both the food and the service!! Nothing beats a good curry!!

Coming from the UK that has a curry house virtually on every street corner, I found the Sangam to be the worst experience of my life as far as eating curries goes, I even suggested the poor excuse for a waiter that the meal I ordered came from a packet

Chicken Tikka Masala is very delicious. Other curry is all the same, mediocre. The prices are kind of too high for what they are, I think, but it is Whitianga, everybody else price their food rediculously high. I love it as only restaurant with BYO wine allowed, as well. There is no such thing as a great service here, but not terrible experience or anything.

one of the worst exp...wont urge to any one, being served cold food with uneven cooked rice and service was pathetic.
