Review Harbour Society - Auckland Central

Food was excellent. The vege pasta surprised us with the delicious flavours, baby potatoes, crispy aubergine, salmon and eye fillet were all great. I loved the chocolate ice block for dessert! The only thing we wouldn't get again was the pistachio and raspberry tart. Service and view were superb.

The BBQ duck is just beautiful, as well as the bluff oyster (forgot to take picture). There are lovely private rooms, great for private functions, dining or simply to enjoy the quiet atmosphere. A nice surprise to see the spectacular city view from the restaurant.

Amazing food. Good place to go, if you want to try some high end food.

Had a very enjoyable birthday dinner here with my partner. Was wonderful! Staff and food on point. Would recommend.

A fantastic skyline dining experience! Chic interior, friendly service, and an eye catching open kitchen set the scene for high expectations. We begin our journey with fresh chilled local oysters in a light vinegar dressing decorated with baby cucumbers and spearmint leaves that leave you regretting not ordering a platter. Fear not, though, for the Kampot pepper seared venison is the perfect entrée for those who love the heartiness of beef steak, but crave the gamey profile of lamb; I recommend medium-rare doneness. Last, but certainly not least, the berry vacherin is the perfect marriage between sweet and tangy mixed berry compote, fluffy and crispy merengue, and rich and creamy vacherin crème. Paired with a Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, this meal is sure to encapsulate all that is kiwi cuisine.

We had an absolutely amazing experience! We were celebrating our work Do with our staff and we had to bring our newborn, he was being rather fussy about feeding, the staff let me use the wine room to have some privacy to feed him, they also brought my drink over to me during this and I felt so looked after and respected. The service was incredible, we were greeted with a Kia Ora, and looked after so well by Kiara and Mikayla. Highly recommend on these points alone but the food was truly outstanding. We all had entrees, mains and desserts, including the oysters, raw fish, salmon, pork belly, market fish, ribeye and the stand out Eye fillet. The food was so delicious and we were very impressed. Highly recommend to all!!

4 of us went in for dinner and we shared a few plates. Beef chateubriand is a must, we asked for medium and it came out like a medium-rare which was perfect for me. Portion is generous and the sauce and mushrooms were so good along with the beef! Sashimi was nice, good variety and fresh, but had at least one scale on each piece of sashimi. I would not order the clam pasta again, not only was the taste not my preference but the pasta was all stuck to each other. We were sat by a table with good view and service was quick when prompted. Also good wine list.

One of our favorite night! I’m so craving for the Thai Oysters, definitely one of the best flavors you should try. Not a fan of the China oyster. We’ve had the Buratta cheese to start, cloudy bay clam pasta and Sirloin Steak to follow and finish with the lychee, matcha icecream dessert. The clams were so fresh and tasty, steak definitely a 5 star hit. The bun was complimentary and yummy. I don’t highly recommend the dessert as I thought the flavor was too weak. We’ve also order popcorn chicken from the bar snack menu and banana split which was yummy for our boy. Great selection of wine but very limited in cocktails. Perhaps this is something they need to improve

The restaurant environment is great. It's on the 15th floor. easy to find. The open kitchen makes everyone see it at a glance. The restaurant was not busy when I went there. There are a few tables by the window. It is convenient to see the scenery outside, and the experience is very good. The only fly in the ointment is that the oysters are sold out, so we chose sashimi.

My husband booked this restaurant for my birthday. Located on the 15th of So Hotel. Food - highest quality of freshness, delectable and beautifully prepared. The Beef Tournedos is soft and excellent! Great service team, Kirsten is an amazing hostess. Great location, quiet, stunning decor and interior, this place is highly recommended.

We went there for their restaurant months menu, $65 for 3 course which is a very good value. Food are OK. Service was a little bit slow, but it was a Friday night. Staff were friendly and helpful. This restaurant is on the level 15, and has very good view.

Always had great dinner here. Food is amazing, used to be fine dining French restaurant but now changed to Asian inspired dishes, but still very lovely. Great atmosphere as well, suitable for special occasions with good distance between tables. Unfortunately, I found every time i visit, the quality of service is slightly underwhelming on this price range restaurant. Once we have waited 45minutes to grab someone for order foods/ unable to order extra wines as short staffed.. hopefully gets better. We will be back👍

Nouveau cuisine! Beef was cooked perfectly and wine recommendations were spot on. Desserts were visual and palatable joys!

Lunch menu is super small. The only good thing on there was the vegetarian noodles. And yes we ordered a lot, there were 6 of us. Great service and view though.

Really innovative menu. The presentation of the dishes is insanely good. The food is very good at creating contrast with flavours and textures. Some of the combinations were a bit much for my personal taste but I enjoyed my experience nonetheless.

We went to the resto for our anniversary and we were seated near the glass wall where we had a great view of the Viaduct Harbour. The food were not the best but we still enjoyed it and the serving was just right. The staff are lovely and courteous.

Partner and I came here last night and had the most amazing time. This was my third time at the restaurant and my partners first. Our server (Cedric) was lovely and went through the set menus with us as we were interested in those and when we picked the So Amazing set menu he straight away asked if we wanted to get one of each of the options so that we could share and try everything.
We didnt at all feel rushed in between course and he was even checking with us if we were ready for the next course instead of just sending it out as well as checking we were enjoying the food. There was a slip up with my drink which he said he would take off the bill as it wasnt my fault even though I said I was happy to pay.
Every single item we had from the menu was phenomenal to the point where it is hard to pick our favourites. We also had a pleasant surprise when dessert from the set menu came out where we were treated to a cute little tasting plate with three extra bite size desserts.
Everything about last night was amazing from the staff to the food, the drinks, atmosphere. Straight after we finished my partner said we should definitely go back there again so it's easy to see why I keep returning to this restaurant

Absolutely amazing experience had to ask if they could cook us a steak again as it was too salty without hassle gentle man in the navy suit grabbed us the steak with hassle free gave us great service me and my girlfriend highly recommend great food and customer service

We got a First Table reservation for a birthday dinner, which was amazing for such a beautiful restaurant.

We got some complimentary Bread w/ Truffle Butter, complimentary Arancini Balls, King Crab, Duck Breast, Tuna Belly, Wood-Fired Potato, Pickled Grapes Dessert, with a complimentary Birthday Platter.

Everything was just phenomenal. The quality of the dishes, presentation, flavours, service were all outstanding, no faults whatsoever. I would love to dine here again, especially with First Table as it was an absolute blessing, our total bill came to only $86 (including the $10 First Table booking fee).

really nice restaurant. Locat at the city centre. Good view and delicious food. Will come back for dinner in the future.

Restaurant in so-hotel on the 15th floor with great harbour view.
Option of degustation and A la carta , we went with the $120 menu, food quality are good, presentation excellent. However, taste wise it’s fine but doesn’t have the wow factor we expected given the price mark of the meal.
Service is okay , they do explain in detail when they serve each course, but there are little things such as no cleaning up of the table after the bread entree.
Overall we did enjoy the night but probably will go back to other restaurants if we do want another degustation meal.
Came here with the family for a birthday lunch on one of their set menus the food was delicious and I was very satisfied and I was full at the end even though the portions were small
Went here for lunch - had the gnocchi and the pork belly. The gnocchi was delicious, I wish they did this as a main at lunch time. The pork was 85% fat and the meat fairly tough so I wouldn’t order that again.
The price at lunch is really good for the food and the view, of course, is awesome.

Nice rooftop bar and restaurant. restaurant downstairs but still got the good view. Bar and restaurant belongs to so Auckland hotel. Dishes are delicious and fancy. Hae free breads and truffle butter. Desserts so good as well. Will definitely come back.

Service: 5/5
Ambience: 5/5
Food: 4/5

Came here just as the sun was setting - was such a beautiful place to dine.
The food was super fresh and really well presented, however the steak was quite dry.
Other than that the service was great, we received complimentary bread and desserts which was nice.
Would come back to try the rest of the menu :)

5/5 Taste
5/5 Display
5/5 Quantity
5/5 Customer Service

Oh boy here we go again, My favourite fine dining restaurant in Auckland.

Their tomahawk cut 1kg steak is simply the best. I’ve already been there 5 times to have that steak and it is so monies worth. I ask the bone to be well cooked so I can munch on it with my hands.
They have always served us complimentary desserts every time, and sometimes even appetisers too.
Their salad and their mushroom oh boy even their water tastes good.
Definitely worth the try fellas!
Great service, fantastic wine selection and good food. Will definitely be back. Standout dishes for us were the Crayfish/lobster starter (great drama with the smoke release on service) and the Japanese Wagyu beef!

Luckily had one of the finest birthday feast at “HarbourSociety” @so_auckland with my girl. Such a gastronomical restaurant with exceptional ambience and service 🥂🙌🏻 and exquisite wine selection .
They also have an awesome rooftop bar HI -SO.

Wow, what a grand place , from the moment you walk in you are treated with great service and flaoursome food. .Wine list is quite extensive. There is a set menu for lunch which suited is well. The cauliflower soup was creamy and rich , loved the small prawns in the dish which went really well.Market fish with veges and broth was good but the lamb was the hero. Presentation of all the dishes were amazing.Desserts were equally good too..
Would love to come here for dinner soon..

New restaurant - great food and service. Expect this to be in Metro’s Top 50 next year. Will definitely go back. Had the set menu. Bar in the same hotel is worth a look.

Harbour Society is relaxed yet classy, beautiful space with friendly attentive service. We were greeted right away on arrival and shown to a table right by the window. Beautiful setting, stylish decor, and very spacious. Food was amazing, top notch. Highly recommend the mushroom ravioli for starter, I had the seared tuna as main and it was beautiful. Surprise dessert from the kitchen for my friend’s birthday as at time of booking there was an option to select occasion, didn’t think too much of it, was greeted happy birthday on arrival and they exceeded our expectations.

Been waiting since the opening of Auckland most hip hotel, So/ Auckland to try their 15th floor harbour society.
It did not disappoint. For only $39 per person you ca order as much as you want off ther a la cartel breakfast menu as well as indulge in their buffet offering to ensure some awesome variety!
Love the service by Christian who was friendly, attentive and super helpful! Salamat ;)

Will definitely be back!

Amazing views from the restaurant. We came here for the full buffet breakfast. You can help yourself to their buffet selection plus order 1 dish off the breakfast A la carte menu. Good selection of the buffet, both continental and cooked, make your own juice station, fresh pastries, cold meats and cheeses and a salad bar. Our a la carte meals were the Waffles, French Toast and Croque Monsuier. French toast was the best one out of the 3. The service was commendable, staff were very efficient and welcoming. Overall wonderful experience and loved the quality of food. Price was reasonable too for a 5-star hotel,$39pp for the full breakfast which also includes tea or coffee.

One of my new favourite restaurant in Auckland. Located in SO hotel and staff are friendly and attentive. Thank you for providing great evening for my family

We came here to celebrate our anniversary, good service and delicious food. The duck breast was the best I have ever tasted. My hubby ordered lamb cutlets, a bit overcooked, but still taste good. They presented the food beautifully. The bread with truffle butter and desserts were also very yummy. We would definitely visit again.

Great location and great view if you get a table facing the harbour.

We tried the wakanui angus tenderloin, duck breast, steamed vegetables and french fries with truffle paste. They served bread with truffle butter at the start which was pretty good. The steak and duck were okay and pleasantly looking to the eyes. However, the vegetables that came with these and the side vegetables were not good. There was nothing gourmet or even tasty about them, specially for a Michelin star chef.

The staff was very friendly and generally I would have rated the service very well. However, there was an incident that somewhat ruined the evening. Once we were done with dinner, I paid and signed and we headed to the bar for another drink. As I was coming out of the restroom my date was being told by a waitress that we hadn’t paid and was holding an EFTPOS machine and the bill. This was very distasteful and unnecessary. Specially when he was being invited to dinner. The staff had been very friendly up to this point but this waitress wasn't even apologetic and rather rude. Very unfortunate :(!

My personal experience with service was bad but generally just based on the food, I wouldn’t go back nor recommend Harbour Society anyway.

Can I please give this restaurant more than 5 stars?

The food was full of flavour, plated beautifully. Best duck I have ever tasted. Perfectly moist and juicy. the ravioli was so soft and creamy. They gave us 3 complimentary dishes as well. The dessert platter (complimentary) was very thoughtful - gave us a chance to try their different desserts.

Service was lovely. Our waitress looked after us so well and made light conversation throughout the night. We always saw her with a smile on her face.

The view was beautiful. We were seated next to the window, overlooking the ocean.

This is one of the best restaurants I have ever visited. I can’t wait to come back here again.

Came in for a birthday dinner yesterday with friends. Ordered the seared black angus beef and the brassica with floret for our mains. For the sides, we ordered the wild mushroom fricasse and the french fries with truffle paste. For drinks, we got the bees knees and two sweet hereafters. beef was tender and the brassica was pan fried really well. The cauliflower had a smokey flavour to it and was plated nicely. Wild mushrooms were soft and when dipped in truffle paste, tasted even more delicious. French fries were at the right crispiness. Service was real good. Loved the view from SO/.

Came here during Xmas. Food was great and service impeccable. Only biggest disappointment was cream of Roquefort which was too advanced for or pallet and also other tables as we saw many being returned. That being said, the other dishes outshined to still allow us to have a positive taste experience.

Amazing. The service absolutely made our visit a fantastic experience and was the winner of the night.

We enjoyed most of the food, standout dishes were the crayfish, duck and brownie. The decor is modern and refreshing, and the open kitchen is impressive.

Have to say, interesting choice of bathroom colours! 🦄🌈
Linda
Beautifully presented food; the crayfish and the duck breast are must tries! Staff were attentive; atmosphere was classy yet comfortable with great rooftop views.

The service was very good (continuous run of free bread) - the bread was very crispy on the outside and very soft in the centre which came with truffle butter.
The A5 wagyu came in a 100g only - but there is a side with the steak that other photos don’t seem to have (this includes the Australian beef and the T-bone. The lamb rack was cooked very well - fat was rendered well and was nicely charred on the outside.
I really enjoyed the ravioli was really nice (I decided to keep the sauce to dip the bread in). The crayfish/lobster entree was very fancy - one of their specialities.
Fancy restaurant. The view from the restaurant overseeing Auckland harbour is amazing. We went there for dinner. Service was good. They always check up on us and see if we needed anything else.
Bread and truffle butter was very good. My favourite dessert will have to be Hazelnut ....cremex

The entry of a fine-dining contender is always welcome in the mercurial culinary playgrounds of Auckland. This one has more going for it, ensconced in the upper floors of the contemporary-chic SO Sofitel where 5 star rooms of luxurious, striking decor start at NZD 550 per night. There were enticing promotional photographs of cuisine which mirrored the hotel's ambition and they even plucked a chef of interesting credentials - Marc de Passorio, who, in addition to his haute-cuisine credentials in Aix-en-Provence in France, had spent some time cooking for Vladimir Putin (the finest thug in Europe). Luxury, ignominy, redemption - the mix was irresistible and the enticement quite ripe for a visit early in the life of this 'elevated' dining domain.

For restaurants inside five star hotels , the service starts at the hotel entrance. With or without staff being present there, most NZ joints in this category do not realize this. There's no doorman at SO Sofitel's entrance , a striking indicator of staff-pinching. Arriving cars therefore get the cold shoulder , but the main doors are automatic thus cutting the need for staff to open them.

The concierges are on it, keenly guiding you to where you want to go, often walking one to the lift - a sleek contraption with only button on the outside where one keys in the desired destination floor and then enters inside. The lobby is darkly glamourous, cloaked bone to hem in black stone with strategic placements of glittering decor.

The restaurant is a stylish luxurious place with only one significant deduction in classiness - the tables are stripped of tablecloth. It is an expansive room, with a boldly open-plan, glamorously flowing bright kitchen at the back. 70 mm views of the Auckland harbour and downtown are gifted by large windows that both enclose and liberate. Chairs though small are comfortably fabric-upholstered with sleek burnished-wood countours along the lines of the Eames chair.

Service over the composite course of two separate evenings proved to be excellent, with only one waiter being clod-like, but the others compensating with their finesse and attention.

Harbour Society in its current state is essentially a meat-'n'-veg restaurant - there are no carb-based dishes , which would make the calorie-watchers very happy but which constrict the menu options. Vegetarians will struggle with the lean pickings on offer. On the whole the menu seems elegant but it's actually quite lop-sided and skews inordinately towards red meat. My abjurance of the latter explains why a large chunk of the offerings are not explicated here.

Lobster was glamorously presented, with a glass dome lifted off the table to disclose clouds of smoke that cleared to reveal a small dainty presentation. This is likely the most tender lobster in Auckland, the smoked treatment permeating its succulent delicate meat - no haunting soul of the sea here in terms of deep intrinsic flavour but the texture made up, and so did the excellently judged accoutrements of a lemon-chantilly cream and a few pearls of caviar.

On the cocktail menu, J.A.F.F.E martini had the following menu description - "just another f***ing martini" - complete with the asterixes. One has to admire their guts ! It was a blend of coffee, cacao and orange - intrigued, I ordered it but found, alas, that the coffee was too dominant. The waitress was admirably assiduous in eliciting my lack of appreciation of the drink after I responded to her feedback query with a guarded answer (she cared, or at least she seemed to care but a truly service-oriented bar would have followed that up with a second complimentary offer of an improved drink - that's the difference between real five star service and ordinary service).

"Artichoke heart cooked in olive oil and fleur de sel" was an elegant presentation that attested to chef Marc De Passorio's accomplished technique with softening vegetables for consumption. The star ingredient had been cooked and carved to reveal the melting "heart" of the vegetable, never mind its slightly fibrous stalk. Purple carrots, a chunk of turnip, and plump tender broad beans were all tenderly rendered, resting on a delicate artichoke puree.

I've consumed no finer duck in NZ than the one reared and slaughtered for Harbour Society. De Passorio poaches it in milk, and the result is sublimely succulent, heightened further by a richly rendered fatty exterior. It is finished in manuka honey and some balsamic which makes the end-taste sweetish rather than savoury - as if in a bid to curtail too much perfection.

The vegetarian main course for my companion brings us to the scant attention the restaurant has given right from the outset outset to that haloed set. The basic understanding that a vegetarian doth not survive on vegetables alone, and that a dazzling variety of condiments and carbs in all conceivable forms and formats actually exists in the real world should you search for it , has not dawned upon HS's chef. My pal was given a presentation of roasted cauliflorets with little pools of green sauce (probably a cauliflower-cream-kale number) and a variety of garnishes. It looked nice and he reported it was not bad, but I could clearly see that few vegetarians would think of it as a substantial main course.

The tune and tenor were sweetened by the finishers. Apple tart was given a trippy spin - the basics were strongly rendered with a sharp apple compote on a firm biscuit base with little torpedoes of whipped cream for balance, but the textural zingers were extraordinarily crisp bits of brunoised apple and the hidden surprise of popping candy. No such tricks were there, nor were they needed in a beautifully presented banana-muscovado-vanilla number.

The second visit's best highlight was something not synthesized by Harbour Society but which they packaged superbly - $ 35 for a 500ml carafe of supple, dulcet and excellently fruity 2017 Grayling Pinor Noir - one of the best wine deals in any top restaurant around town - the liberal consumption of which helped to dull the edge of the food's disappointment.

The octopus dish is a reaction to two things - one, the challenging question : what spin will you put on tough cuts of octopus ? and two, the profound proverb : if you can't dazzle them with your brilliance , baffle 'em with your bulls***. 50 colourful "points" of food decked the sprawling presentation , with yellow and green citrus gels, little circles of peppers and tiny shavings of salmiak (salty liquorice) and unsurprisingly none of these could enhance the little slender cuts of chewy tasteless octopus ( even a sucker for luxury like Putin would not fall for this glamourous scam).

Variously inspired accoutrements graced the scallop dish, alas, the scallops per se, though finely rendered, were just anemic in flavour - this really is not Chef de Passorio's fault - his kitchen is just stuck in a country with useless scallops ! Milk-poached Hapuka , though not tough, was only a couple of fin-swerves away from breasting that mark. Poached to a state that transcends death, 'twas majestically firm with barely any piscine flavour. A well-judged aioli sauce cut with lemon had little around for it to tie together. The bunch of soft vegetables which impressed me on the first visit were now wearing thin on their appeal - save for a few vegetal purees here and there, their seasoning was off, they almost always tasted simply steamed or plainly roasted rather than the other more sophisticated methods of delicious vegetable transformation and especially on this plate, did little to detract from the lackluster fish. Chocolate cremeux with hazelnut to end the meal, lacked the focused flavour of the previous desserts.

Prices : $ mid-20s for appetizers, mid-40s for mains ( good value for this restaurant).

So after a promising first affair, the second tryst ran dry of true juice. On my concluding visit, the chef's offerings were also unequal to the restaurant's vantage locale and excellent service. The cuisine presentation is consistently beautiful , but you know the saying about skin-deep beauty. This new restaurant does not do much to further advance Auckland's evolved restaurant scene which nevertheless could do more than just the same ol' Sidart and Meredith's (which is no more and neither is Simon Wright's FC) . How can it when the chef, though technically accomplished and ticking all the primary boxes, often seems mortally afraid of flavours which speak out ?
3.25 stars out of 5 ( a quarter of the way between Good and Excellent) More pics @ Upnworld

Beautiful venue and great services. They always checked up on how we are doing and if we needed anything else.
There was a slight hiccup in my food but it was taken care of quickly and professionally.
The A5 wagyu was an extreme disappointment.
Sous vide crayfish has a weird texture. Not a personal recommendation.

I would possibly return.

Great Service. Great view.

A5 Wagyu melts. Delicious. The duck was cooked with orange. Tasted very interesting and good. Truffle butter was delicious too with bread. Dessert was great but the strawberries were a little too sour for me.

Will be back again.

Service: 5/5
Environment: 4/5
Presentation: 4/5
Food Quality: 4/5
Food Presentation: 4.5/5
Price per person: $40-$80

No expert in the Auckland dining scene but I reckon this would have to be one of the best looking dining rooms in the city, very sleek, amazing views and there has been no expense spared on anything. Only had buffet breakfast however it was one of the better ones I’ve seen. Not your mass produced buffet where it’s a big mess and stuff sits there for ever and tastes crap, small portions and topped up frequently. Great range and excellent quality
Lucy
Excellent ambience with stunning views. Friendly staff and food were very quickly served.
The truffle butter that came with the bread was delicious. The entrées were beautifully arranged. Little disappointed on the charcoal rib eye, the meat itself was tender but didn’t retain enough juice. The French fries with truffle paste aioli was yummy and the steamed vegetables contained a great mix of vegetables.
The stars are for the atmosphere and presentation, nice place to hangout for some drinks, but probably won’t revisit their food again.

Auckland finely has a decent rooftop bar! We came here a week after it was opened for afterwork drinks on a Friday, and the place was packed. The whole vibe of this place is very chic and the decor is on point. Staff are also dressed in colourful cool outfits and surprisingly for such a fancy place the drinks are reasonably priced. Can totally see this becoming my regular for sure. Can’t wait to go back and try out more items on their drink menu!

Update; 4th visit here and I have to say I have found my new favourite steak on the menu... the Angus tenderloin. In more exciting news they now have a Bernaise sauce which is quite possibly the best I’ve ever had!

Beautiful location , food and staff ... but you know how much we love the Sofitel

We came here after months and months of waiting and were not disappointed. The complimentary bread with truffle butter was one of the best I’ve had ( ostro still takes the cake for best seaweed butter in the world). You then get a complimentary snack that they’ve prepared we had the tuna which was delish. For mains the rib eye with a bernaise type sauce and wine jus was superb. I’d love to see an actual bernaise on the menu.

The fries as expensive at $14 a pop but that’s probably because of the decadent saffron aioli and truffle paste.

So the staff are fantastic. Nansei in particular was so friendly, knowledgeable and passionate about what she did thank you for making the experience just fantastic !

Highly recommend the 3 course lunch great portions and the steak is delicious
