Review Selera Malaysian Cafe - Auckland Central

Hasha Samarasekera
(Visited on 14 November 2023, reviewed on 6 December 2023) Crowded place due to the restaurant being renowned for great Malaysian food. The braised pork fried noodles I had were delicious! Worth coming here again. Parking is a bit difficult, so best to park behind (somewhere close to Teed street), or along Khyber Pass road where parking slots are available.

It was pricey compared to other Malaysian restaurants, but it was worth it. Prawn fired dumplings were so good. The place was so busy, but staff were so friendly. I would like to go back.

Selera has really good Malaysia food. Authentic and tasty. Slightly on the pricey side but that's ok.

Ordered the Curry Lamb With Rice, Fried Buns, Curry Fish Balls, Chicken and Beef Skewers, Dirty Fried Rice With Chicken and Broccoli With Soy Sauce. Reasonable portions for the most part. All the dishes were very well made. Loved the curry sauce especially. I do think there should’ve been a bit more lamb though for the curry lamb but because we ordered lots of other protein so I didn’t mind. Overall, I’d definitely recommend this place!

Really love their food especially laksa soup very” authentic and yummy. Wonton soup very flavourful and XO sauce fried rice smell really yum and taste fantastic. Overall just amazing 👌

Portions are very generous, can share or save the rest for lunch the next day. Brisket was a little chewy, had to eat the chunks in one mouthful and chew it whole. The place is always busy which is a good sign.

We ordered curry noodles soup.. the curry broth not bad..quite authentic. Just their yong taufu still lack of taste.if compare the one have in kl. But still the food still good.

Make one dish yummy is not difficult, nearly every dishes yummy is difficult, I love this Malaysia restaurant.

First time eating here and tried Laksa. The broth is so rich and flavourful! A very generous portion. It’s a little bit white spicy (I don’t feel it but my partner felt spicy lol). Will definitely come back! Highly recommended.

Genuine Malaysian food. Great laksa dishes. Extensive menu. Generous sized servings. Prompt service even with full house Sunday lunch. Feels like being back in KL. Not cheap, a bit prìcey, but good value .

Great Laksa and Carrot Cake is superb. Hainan Chicken is the best in nz.

Excellent Laksa, tastes very authentic (me coming from a SE Asian nation, I know my Laksa...). A bit pricey now, as it used to be just $15, but now at $19 as of writing. (2021). Wasn't such a fan of marmite chicken, but it was still tasty. Highly recommended. New edit, Laksa now at $25! (Aug 2023)

My palette had the pleasure of savouring the magic of Malaysian cuisine at this humble yet wonderful restaurant, where the star of the show was unequivocally the Fried Noodles Char Kueh Teow. The rich culinary heritage of Malaysia unraveled on my plate as I bit into the beautifully wok-fried flat rice noodles. Every mouthful was an explosion of flavor, brimming with the robust savoury, subtly sweet, and tantalizing spicy notes. The sheer delight of tasting the flat noodles, perfectly cooked with the ideal 'wok hei' or breath of the wok, was heightened by the thoughtful balance of spices that didn't overpower but rather enhanced the inherent flavour of the dish. The Char Kueh Teow wasn't just about the noodles though. Generous portions of succulent prawns, tender slices of Chinese sausage, and plump cockles all came together to create a delightful texture that made each bite more memorable than the last. The subtle smokiness of the dish was perfectly offset by the crisp bean sprouts and the delicate, aromatic chives, adding an exciting dimension to the dish. What I truly appreciated was the attention to detail - the omelette was perfectly scrambled and lent a unique creaminess that intertwined flawlessly with the spicy, savory, and subtly sweet elements. The garnish of fresh lime on the side was a masterstroke, its tanginess giving a refreshing lift to the overall experience. The ambiance of the restaurant complements the food beautifully. A tasteful blend of traditional and contemporary decor creates a warm and inviting atmosphere. And of course, the staff are friendly, attentive, and clearly passionate about sharing their culinary heritage, making the whole experience even more enjoyable. It's rare to find a place that delivers such authenticity with a touch of elegance. The Fried Noodles Char Kueh Teow at this restaurant has truly been a revelatory experience - a testimony to the diversity, complexity, and deliciousness of Malaysian cuisine. It's a dish and a restaurant I'd enthusiastically recommend to any food lover in a heartbeat!

Best Hainanese chicken in the whole New Zealand hands down. Super juicy. Great portion. Lots of bensprouts and very generous with sauce. Must have at Selera. Super sexy chicken.

Very busy Malaysian cafe that is defenitely more popular than justifiable. The food was good but not enough for a spot on my personal favourite restaurants in Auckland. The lovely worker at the cashier was very friendly and happy to ask the staff to make my order even though they were just about to go on break. • Hainan Chicken Rice [4.5/5] chicken was perfectly delicate and very juicy, lovely crunchy layer of bean sprouts underneath and two questionably dry and discoloured slices of cucumber. Personally, I think the flavour of the orange sauce did not mix well with the chicken • Original Fish Collar Noodle Soup [3.5/5] the soup was amazing and fragrant but the protein size was very small, an excessive proportion of bones • Char Kueh Tiaw [3/5] I can easily think of many places with much better rice noodle dishes, the flavour was just very dull and lacking

A bit pricey but have generous servings. They also have a store at the nearby Westfield but I prefer to eat at this place. Food is good most of the time and serving is fast. I would have to say though that I have better options hence the 4 star rating.

Haven’t had Chicken Laksa in awhile. I guess Selera have one of the better laksa’s available in Auckland. <br/><br/>Though I feel the broth is a bit too thick (or maybe it’s just my preference to have it slightly thinner), it is quite delicious and full of flavour. Serving is decent, more than enough for an average-sized Asian girl 😂 <br/><br/>Teh Tarik is alright, not too sweet :)

Chow kuey teow was mediocre noodles mushy I've had the dish from here before and it's always hit and miss. Plus I had to wait a long time to be served my partner had already finished eating laksa and we still waited<br/>

Portions are really big. Especially the laksa which was super tasty and came in a massive oversized bowl. Lots of meat and noodles and I wanted to finished the whole base but was top much. We were happy with the $18 dishes. Can't speak for price/portion on the more expenny stuff.

Ordered the curry chicken it’s perfect if you like your food cold and only get chicken bones with no meat. Wouldn’t waste my time going here

The food is authentic and portion size is generous. However I've had much better in terms of flavouring. I felt that the laksa base had more chilli oil which compromised the creamy luxury of the coconut cream. Service was very poor. I was told to wait by the door while customers who arrived after me were ushered in first. Perhaps I was dining alone and other customers were in bigger groups so I was a less important income?? I waited for 15 minutes before being seated, but not before I was rudely told to "just wait" when I inquired how long I can expect to be seated. Place is overrated, in my opinion, there are at least one or two places in Newmarket within the same price range with more impressive flavours.

Embraced Selera for lunch for the first time and it was so good. The service provided by the boss was really attentive and he was extremely kind. He provided top notch service especially for the price for the food and that’s what makes Selera special. <br/><br/>I got the Hainan chicken rice and it’s one of the best I’ve had in Auckland. The rice was full of chicken flavour and it tasted really authentic. The bean sprouts soaked the soy sauce really well. What I like to do is eat all the bean sprouts first and let the chicken sit in the soy sauce for awhile to soak in all the sauce. My brother got the chicken laksa and the portion was really big and smells wonderful too. Mum got the shrimp and chicken rice noodle and she said it’s good too.<br/><br/>Highly recommend Selera for authentic Malaysian food. Great price and service too! Can’t ask for anymore.

Staff/service: 5/5<br/>Venue: N/A<br/>Price/portion: 3/5<br/><br/>I ordered the kon low mee with curry chicken. For $18 it is bit disappointing, I expect kon low noodles to be egg noodles being a Malaysian eatery. The noodle portion is small and not a lot of edible chicken meat.<br/><br/>Join Zomato Gold and get 1+1 on food or 2+2 on drinks or a flat discount on the total bill. This place gets really busy so it's hard to get an indoor table, especially for bigger groups. However, there are outdoor tables available. It's also good to know that the restaurant has a pay-first policy so that you don't get alarmed when staff takes table orders and asks you to pay. I wished they had Malaysian drinks like kopi or cham. But canned drinks are at $3.<br/><br/>Despite the rather cramped table layout (I had to get the guy behind me to push in his chair just big enough for me to squeeze in), food has been splendid. My personal fave is the pandan chicken which I always get whenever I dine there. All the dishes I've tried so far were great. With my partner being Malaysian, we can definitely say that the food here is authentic and delicious.

Cool Malaysian place!

You really can’t go wrong with the laksa from Selera! <br/>I love coming here on the warmer evenings and have a big bowl of laksa outside! <br/>The portions are huge and you can pick from so many options to customise your laksa! My personal favourite is the wontons!<br/>The service is quick and friendly! Remember to ask for yours spicy, I always need more spice!<br/>I’d also recommend the curry puffs which come with a half egg in each one!!!<br/>Make sure you visit the one in Kyber Pass, I’d recommend it over the new Selera in the mall

The Newmarket shop have more options n the uncle is so friendly. Been to the Westfield n the shop, been to both twice each. <br/><br/>Newmarket branch have more varieties. 😊 and their milk tea is good.

I’ve been here multiple times with my family and the staff are nice and friendly. However, once I came here with other teenagers we weren’t given the same amount of service as I’d normally get. As per usual the food was nice but was thoroughly disappointed in this and has put my opinion of this place a lot lower than it was before. Overall a poor experience
Real Slug
Delicious and tasty Malaysian dishes with fast service. Portion sizes are huge and great value for money. <br/>The laksa was the absolute best - we got both a chicken and a pork laksa. <br/><br/>They don’t take bookings so you’ll have to try your luck as a walk-in. The restaurant gets quite busy so it may be a bit difficult if you’re going with a bunch of people.

I love the atmosphere of this place, and Ben though it could be a bit cleaner. I had chicken laksa which Was very tasty, other dishes on the menu like the beef rendang are a bit overpriced but definitely worth trying them. Will come back.

Great stuff. Not only authentic but taste great!

Crowded and cramped up but the food they serve is absolutely delicious. Food is served only after payment is done ,very quick service. Loved the Malaysian fried rice, recommended to us by the waitress. Soupy laksa, yumm!

One of the best Hainaness chicken rice that I had in Auckland. Tender chicken and savory rice, well-matched with the sauce provided. Very clean dining environment and friendly staffs.

We ordered hainanese chicken rice and seafood curry laksa. Chicken was tender and my Malaysian bf said it tasted authentic. Rice wasn't as fragrant as we'd like it to be. Laksa was tasty, the broth was creamy and rich. Overall, great experience sitting outside with the heaters. Fast service as well.
Moli Nhem
Best malysian place in auckland, delicious Laksa and the char kew teow is delectable. Consistent delicious food everytime we go, only negative is sometimes there's a bit of wait for the table because there so busy. Highly recommended if you like Malaysian food.
LilianMonaghan
Best laksa in town. Authentic Malaysian restaurant without doubts. Love their seafood laksa, char keuh tiaw, fish collar noodles, mee goreng, just everything. It’s a bit pricey compared to other Malaysian restaurants but totally worth it.

Went here for the first time tonight, my partner and I stumbled across it by chance after the original restaurant we had planned to go was closed. We will be back again for sure. We were seated straight away (lucky timing as it was FULL), we were tended to very quickly and our food didn’t take long to be bought out, staff were extremely friendly and attentive. The food was delicious, fresh, tasty, everything you’d want! With how busy this place was, one table would become free and people waiting at the door would snap it up straight away, goes to show just how popular and great (understatement) this place is!!!

Did you watch that hawker food scene from Crazy Rich Asians and really wish that you could try it in real life? Well, turns out that they didn&#039;t even film in Malaysia and I&#039;m sure the actors fake-ate the food for the shot. You just can&#039;t win. The next best thing is eating here. It&#039;s not your dinner-with-Nick-Young moment, but it does not disappoint. Try the tofu.
Kun_xiao
Been there many times and always good. The staff and friendly and helpful. Food wise, the hainan chicken is a great treat to yourself, as the rice is cooked in chicken broth which is full of flavor. Laksa is another recommendation. Lots of spices and will be a warm dish in winter.

We’ve been here twice. During the first visit, I ordered the Hainan Chicken and my wife ordered the Beef Rendang. They were delicious! Worth the price! Our recent visit, I tried the Char Kueh Tiaw and she ordered the Seafood Laksa, they didn’t disappoint. We’ll surely keep coming back to try other dishes. The only down side is that they’re so popular that there isn’t enough tables unless you like sitting in the cold at night. 🤤🤤🤤
Simon Wordsworth
Holy cow that is a big bowl of laksa! Deliciously spicy creamy goodness perfect for a winters day. Ambience not far from a hawker market, fast service and pretty cheap on my opinion!
MeeraTheFoodie
Selera was a delectable experience 🤤 Their dishes (chicken laska + black bean chicken on rice) were massive in portion and ever so comforting, leaving you in an absolute food coma 🤤 However, more on the pricier side of similar Malaysian places! <br/><br/>Food: 4.5/5<br/>Service: 3.5/5<br/>Price: 3/5

I had Assam fish on rice, but didn’t think anything great of it. The word Assam in Malay means sour, but I didn’t think it had the characteristic that typically comes from tamarind.<br/><br/>Not bad but nothing to rave about either.
Licheng Sun
These portion sizes are out of this world, and while the prices may be 6 times more than what you would find in Malaysia, the ingredients and flavours more than make up for the tears leaking down the side of my wallet. I found the flavours to be a bit tweaked towards the western pallet as certain elements of the dish were a bit more punchy than I was used to. The beef rendang was a bit too sweet for my liking, however, the texture was fantastic. These dishes are also not nearly as oily as the ones you may find back in the motherland. Would give 4.5/5 if I could!

A good Malaysian restaurant for a quick meal , their famous laksa is really good. My partner will literally drink all the soup ... <br/><br/>Had been here a few times and tried a few different dish, chicken rice and Char Kueh Tiaw are both nice .<br/><br/>Price are on the high side compare to similar Malaysian places , they priced around $18-$20+ for one dish , other places would cost around $13-$18...

Amazing place!! Fills up quiet fast but staff are quick to seat you and make you comfortable. We were a group of 3 and ordered the bbq pork laksa to share--they don't skip on portion size, uggh so good! Also had the lamb curry with rice and roti, which was amazing but would have been nice with a little kick, also ordered the bok choy veggies and sweet and sour pork- eyes bigger than our stomachs!?! Food and service were absolutely amazing, definitely looking forward to coming here again.
Keane Lee
Portion size is amazing :) Taste is amazing :) Kinda pricey but i guess that's what you pay for amazing. Will definitely return a few more times
Louise
Haven’t been here in a while, but the place is still as busy as it always is. There is so much variety to choose from and there’s never a long wait. The prices are definitely higher than the usual Malaysian restaurant but it’s definitely worth it if you’re close by. The food is consistently good and service is always quick!<br/>I highly recommend getting the fried buns with condensed milk and kaya as a little dessert!

<br/>Service-3.5/5<br/>Food- 4/5<br/>Ambience- 3.5/5<br/><br/><br/>Had the beef nasi lemak-rice was aromatic with the coconut and pandan flavour. Huge serving of chicken laksa which was creamy and had the right spicy hit.Really good on a cold night. If you are not a big eater and had other small dishes the soup is good for 2.<br/><br/>Been here twice. 2nd was a bit of wait as the line was long to get in. Even the outside seating was packed, I guess it was a start of dinner service around 6:30. They don’t take reservations.Self service on the tea and water. You have to order and pay before they serve your food.Parking might be limited as its located near a busy intersection on Broadway. Although in the evening might be easier to find one
BelaIna
It’s a cool little Malaysian street food place. <br/>Prices are not high and the portions are big. You can feed 2 hungry people with 1 bowl of noodles. The taste is not bad and spicy enough. The service is not the best but I guess it’s what you get in this type of place. <br/>Very busy during lunch time. <br/>Environment is a bit run down and not the cleanest toilets. <br/>Still I would give a 4star because of the combination: food, quality, price<br/>Would definitely go back.
Sijing Chen
everything was good. especially the noodles. it is the best Malaysia fried noddles i have ever had.<br/>100/10 for the noodles!!! <br/>Would definitely come again. <br/>
FoodieBeast
This place is good and it does have good food. However the reason for a 3 is due to the fact that you don't get good service here. It is a restaurant but you get treated like you're in a food court.<br/><br/>Also, the place is always busy (no doubt the food is good and you probably can't find better Malaysian food in New Market or near by) but finding a seat is a struggle especially if you go with 4 or more people.
Lum Lum
Laksa dishes are great for a hearty meal. Make sure to come early or on a non-busy day so they don’t run out :) The portion sizes are HUGE so are well worth the price. I highly recommend checking this place!
Liuxxx
Quality of food has diminished to that of food court level.<br/><br/>This is not the level of taste and quality selera once offered in its prime.<br/><br/>Hainense rice dish came with flavour less chicken and mushy rice. <br/><br/>Laksa was well over seasoned.<br/><br/><br/>

Can’t go wrong with this Malaysian restaurant! Beautiful Laksa, soup noodles and fried noodles. Good portions sizes. Bound to please everyone!
Bright One
Walked past here a few times and noticed the place is very popular, decided to give it a go.  Surrounded by expensive restaurants in the area, you do feel it's such a good value for your money. You'll get a huge bowl of noodles if you ordered Laksa and it's very tasty. However all it can offer is street food rather than something at a restaurant level.
Divya Jaiswal
Not a very good experience. We ordered laksa and vege fried rice. The waiter forgot to inform the kitchen no eggs in laksa and by religion we don't eat eggs.
Kelly
Always walked past here and noticed the crowd, decided to finally give this place a go.<br/><br/>Self service water and tea here, and the waiter was welcoming and attentive. It was a pretty busy night as they had ran out of a few ingredients so our options were quite limited.<br/> Ordered one my favourite tofu dishes and really enjoyed it! Beautifully silky on the inside, I love this dish. <br/><br/>My noodles on the other hand, was nice a little on the bland side for my taste. I was really craving a laksa but they had ran out of ingredients to make it. Considering the hype, it’d be back another time to give it a go.

Had the traditional chicken laksa, chicken with mas sauce and rice as well as satay skewers. Super tasty Malaysian food, one of the best in Auckland. Really fast service, paid first, got our food, there's even outdoor seating which was convenient because the inside was stuffy and hot. Decent price for the portion! Great array of choices! The chicken was all so moist. Even the skewers which you'd think would be charred pieces of dry meat were tasty and juicy, it didn't even need any sauce on the side. It's all on the sweeter side with the sauces and coconut creams so if you're into that kind of thing, you'd enjoy this. The mas chicken sauce was a little too sweet for me but the chicken was so tender. Would love to come back and try the beef rendang and hainan chicken.
Aishwayah
Vege laksa is so nice!!!! Also the roti. It’s always my first choice Malaysian restaurant!!! Portion is really big too!! Cheap but good quality food! Highly recommend!

Malaysian food for office lunch, already ordered twice from Selera, one for sweet and sour pork and the other one for their Hainamnese chicken rice. Delicious and yummy, love it

One of our favorite malaysian restaurants to go to. On peak hours its more likely that you will end up in queue, they dont accept reservations as well, i will recommend you to not leave the the restaurant without having to taste their seafood laksa/ king prawn with oats.<br/><br/>Taste: 4.5/5<br/>Service: 4/5<br/>Value for money: 4/5<br/>Approximate cost for 2 pax: $50

Ate here for the first time and am thrilled to find what I think is the best Malaysian food in Auckland! The Seafood Laksa was incredible, couldn't fault it. The service and hospitality matched. Casual, busy, simple decor, good quality food at very reasonable prices
Nusaiba AD
Bursting in flavours and such generous portions. I got the smaller laksa and the bowl was good for 2 if not 3 people. Full of flavours and the staff (seemed like owners too?) were very friendly, efficient and had our food ready so in no time!! Would return.
Amy
Really thought it was just an average restaurant. Ordered a seafood laksa, one chicken laksa, Hainan chicken with rice and curry chicken.<br/><br/>I remembered seeing in an article ages ago that they had one of the best laksas in Auckland. Me and my family all thought it tasted average, it tastes the same as one of those spice packs where you make at home. So for the same price as one bowl of laksa there, you can buy the ingredients to make at home to feed a family of 5.<br/><br/>We've had better tasting Hainan chicken and curry chicken at other restaurants.
Donna
I ordered the curry chicken on rice and it was honestly so worth the $16. The portions are huge! and i had so much curry left over. They give a generous portion of chicken as well, and the cucumber gives it a little freshness when the curry gets too rich.
Anitha Narayan
The best Malaysian street food in newmarket ... friends had the beef rendang and raves about it. I loved their friend rice and service was awesome. Service was awesome too!
Ellie Walker
Myself and my partner tried out Selera after stumbling along it in New Market one day. We live on the shore and make the trip once every few weeks as we haven't been able to find a Malaysian restaurant that competes close to home.
Natasha R
The laksa is quite nice and huge - probably a 2 person serve for most. Chicken curry was nice too. Busy and you might have to wait a little for a table. Friendly service, good pricing, quick service and nice menu options.
Munching Maffie
We heard it was the best Malaysian food you could get outside of Malaysia! So what did we do? We tried it out! Let me explain why I'm not giving this a 4/5! The food was delicious, don't get me wrong. But there's more to what makes a restaurant than that. It was overpriced for the quantity that we received (especially the salt and pepper fish with rice that I ordered!).  There was hardly any salad on the plate - just two slices of cucumbers. I see other reviews with a lower rating for service. I found it okay - a gentleman who i presume is the owner, was very friendly and smiling with all his customers. The only thing was, he was in a rush. He just wanted to carry on with things and made us hurry with our order. We sat by the window on the inside by the door, it was a sunny day so we didn't mind! The food was hearty and the restaurant was noisy. Would we go again? Not in a while I don't think. I can see why it's so popular - the food is good. I personally, however, cannot justify spending what we did on a plate of rice and fish with two slices of cucumber.
Darren Big Belly
Popular Malaysian food restaurant. Busy always being at a very accessible location. <br/>Because it’s my local, I come here fairly regularly. <br/>Food is decent and consistent, but the price is a bit higher than it should be. Just 2 mains and some skewers will set you back $50.<br/><br/>Good local eatery. <br/><br/>Food 3.5/5<br/>Location 4.5/5<br/>Service 4.5/5

This place is popular! Like hella popular! It's a great and buzzing environment and the staff are friendly.<br/>A lack of vegeterian options which was disappointing. I had remixed the mee gerong which I found to be average especially for the price, however the laksas are why you need to come here. They looked delicious and the meal size is definitely well worth how much you need to pay. Overall a good experience and food depending on what you ordered was also good.
CYYTee
Amazing dinner and swift friendly service. Beef rendang was top notch, tender and flavourful. Chicken laksa, need I say more when almost each table ordered one bowl of it!? We left with happy bellies 👍👍👍
Brittany Guarino
I went here two days ago and got seated immediately with my partner. I was surprised with how busy it was and the wait time for the food was barely any! We got the food within ten minutes and for the price we got so much food. I was surprised with how big the portions were. Needless to say I was quite happy with the meal. It was super tasty, refreshing and felt wholesome. Would come again 10/10

This Malaysian cuisine cafe seems to be pretty well known in Auckland. You may have heard quite a number of people talking about it.<br/><br/>Tried their nasi lemak, curry laksa noodle and char kwei teow (fried rice noodle), tasted rather average, especially considering their high prices. With this kind of price, we can get better and tastier Malaysian foods elsewhere in Auckland. You may refer to my reviews for other restaurants / cafes offering Malaysian foods.<br/><br/>Food & Beverage : 6/10<br/>Service : 6/10<br/>Price : 3/10 (expensive)<br/>Ambience : 5/10<br/>

I’m rating them solely based on their salt and pepper chicken, because that’s what I always order when I go there. I don’t know if that dish is authentic Malaysian cuisine, but I love it. Quick service too. The only downside is having to share tables with others if there’s only a few of you.
Jac
Im Malaysian who enjoyed Our country food very much.Lastnight we was here..we order Hanaimese Chicken rice,Chow Kuey Teow and Nasi Goreng Malaysia.Too be honest..the Hainamese Chicken rice was dried and do not hv much of the aroma of the chicken brooth to cooked the rice to bring out the distinctive of the rice it self. The Chow Kuay Teow was over cooked. The Rice noddle was hard,I believed the quality of the rice noddles itself and the beansprout,Chieves was over cook. This dish is completely out.The Nasi goreng Mslaysia is should say a normal nasi goreng as it does not presented as what we expected.Your price is expensive and food is average..perhaps you could do better then this.Hope this comment will updates yr standard on this few Authentic Malaysian dishes.

Went to this place Mid July 2018. Had a the seafood laksa, Roti and chicken , and the Satay chicken, all were so delicious and so satisfying. The potions were really good as well. Came out of a restaurant after long time without any complaints. Will visit soo again before I leave Auckland. Almost all the people that came in had to wait for an table. But trust me the wait is worth while and not that long. Kudos to the chef and the owner. With that kind of food I dont really care about other factors

So good here!! My mum is from Malaysia so this is like a little slice of home. Super authentic flavours and great range of dishes, I ordered the Char Kuey Teow and my partner ordered a combination laksa. It tasted amazing, I only wish the portion size was a bit bigger for mine. I also thought the laksa was missing a few things like crab cakes or fish cakes and maybe some prawns? There is an option for seafood so maybe they’re catering for people that don’t like seafood but usually traditional laksa has those included. <br/>The chicken and sweet corn soup however was amazing and so were the fried buns!! Would recommend for a quick and tasty meal! <br/><br/>Handy tip- these kinda Asian restaurants don’t have a wait list if it is full, so if there is a free table probably just go and grab it!

4/5 Taste<br/>4/5 Display <br/>3.5/5 Quantity <br/>4.5/5 Customer Service <br/><br/>Very popular Malaysian Restaurant in New Market<br/><br/>This place is always packed, and the wait was long on my previous visit. Regardless of the wait the waiter(seemed like the owner) was very polite and kind to us, offered us table inside as the outside was pretty cold. It was very nice to see these second language speaking owners being very proactive to provide the best customer service experience. <br/>Food was also great, portion was not too big but mattered nicely in huge bowls. <br/>Overall experience was great I could really see why this place is alwaysbpacked. <br/>
The Sweet Tooth Fairy
Authentic Malaysian restaurant located on the corner of Khyber Pass, Newmarket.<br/><br/>Selera is always packed full of people so be sure you count for waiting time also.<br/><br/>Portions of the food is well worth it's price! Not only is staff service very friendly and welcoming, food comes out very fast!<br/><br/>Flavours are very fragrant and spicy and the restaurant offers a huge range of options and variety.

Full of authentic flavour, generous portions, fast and fresh, I love this place. The atmosphere is buzzing with happy, satisfied people. Family friendly, perfect for an afternoon hangout with friends. You won’t be disappointed.

I’m a big fan of laksa so every time I go to new Malay restaurant I’ll always try the laksa first<br/>From my point of view, the laksa was quite creamy and pretty much like papparich’s one (but the price is slightly cheaper)<br/>A little bit disappointed that they don’t have Malay milk tea (my friend ended up having an L&P...)<br/><br/>And also something about cleanliness upsets me a bit 😢 my friend and I sat down but the table was not too clean (some bits of food/garlic or whatever was on the table) so the waiter came and swiped the table <br/>But all the food bits ended up on my coat (so literally he just swiped it off the table to the floor but most of the dirty stuff landed on my coat 😨)<br/>Not sure if I’ll come back again or not...

Food is great and well priced. You get a decent amount of food for the price you pay would definitely recommend. Try and go early on the weekend to try the carrot cake

New menu updated, kindly requested from the manager to upload this online. Hopefully this helps as they have contacted Zomato already and waiting for their replyment.

One of and if not the best Malaysian food I've had. Their food is flavourful and always consistent. Staff are friendly and polite and the shop itself is quite nice. Food is affordable and definitely worth its price :) Highly recommend

Ordered fish head noodles and fried rice noodles! They use vermicelli instead of the other transparent noodles that fish head noodles famous for! The soup was just MSG! No flavours also the fried rice noodles hardly any meat in it just a plate of noodles and chives! Disappointing really! Ok let’s talk about service as I most considerate ‘ none ‘ no politeness or smile from the girl waitress nor the lady boss! Sigh! Back to Sri Mahkota Epsom again I thought! Perfect there!<br/>
Fiona
terrible service, rude, long waiting times despite having 4 empty tables to even order and when we finally got a table it was dirty. It also took time for them to come wipe the table down.

14/4/2018 Saturday rainy day,we order takeaway.<br/>I want a nasi goreng, husband order a char kueh tiew 炒贵刁。<br/>When we get the food , is so expansive $32 !! And so small dish .<br/>Because the menu is show $15 for the fried rice, $15 for char kueh tiew. How come totally $32?!<br/>4 March 2019, we come to look the atmosphere .I order a 海南鸡饭,and my husband order a Mee Goreng. That was the smallest dish I ever buy.

We got an outside table for dinner on a Friday night and we received very prompt friendly service which helped to elevate the experience. <br/>We ordered the curry laksa wonton noodle soup, char kuey teow and chicken thigh noodles, and were extremely impressed with all three dishes. They were all a bit on the pricier side, however this was made up for in the generous portion size and incredible flavours. An overall great meal and am looking forward to returning soon.

Selera in the middle of Newmarket is busy until late most nights of the week. It is a great spot for Malaysian food dine in and takeaway. Great laksa, and chicken curry!!
Yafenxu123
Have been this Malaysia restaurant several times. Although I’ve never tried any traditional Malaysia food at their original place, I believe all dishes of Selera served by the chefs come from Malaysia and with their passion on their job. Laksa is one of my favorite dishes with this restaurant. But it seems like smaller than before and not enough for a man.

Really enjoy this place, simple good food. First time we visited we had the Laksa and the other rice dish pictured which I have forgotten the name of! Both were really good, full of flavour. The second time we ordered the sambal chicken, which I didn't realise was a fish paste and ended up tasting like fishy chicken (100% my fault there).<br/>We also ordered spring roles, unfortunately these were filled with cabbage and not much else which we didn't enjoy.<br/><br/>Seating, decor and atmosphere is very basic. Just a great place to get yummy food!
Vivian
Went for lunch with friend. Food is ok, but service is poor. Have to order food from the front desk by yourself, no staff attend to you at table side. Ordered two dishes but they missed one. We thought it’s just they were slow with delivering food. Only figured the second dish was not even been placed until one of us were almost finishing with the meal by coming to the front desk and ask why it’s taking so long. So we basically watched each other eating.............

Came in with friends for lunch.<br/>Fried rice was flavourful and chicken rice was tasty. Your average Malaysian restaurant. Service was alright.
Georgia Vossen
Very prompt service here! Got all our 6 meals within 15mins, super fast. Nice friendly waitresses. Food was REALLY good, like surprisingly good. I got the vegetarian laska, not too spicy, massive serving, simply delicious. Only thing about it I could say, my mum and sister agreed, we would have preferred some more veges within in. It was a massive bowl, couldn’t finish it, but it was mainly egg noodles with a few veges here and there. I had 3 bits of broccoli within mine. Just would prefer a bit more. <br/>Not a overly stunning venue, right in the heart of Newmarket. Don’t really expect it to be though, and the food prices are cheap enough and the food is amazing enough for it all to just tie in really well. <br/>Will be back!!

Tried Nasi Lemak with Sambal Prawns.....what a fantastic combination of spice, fish and coconut rice! Really hot for a normal kiwi taste buds but you can't resist another spoon.....they serve warm aromatic tea which is essential to increase your appetite! Spring rolls are good to go as entrée. The whole main course dish is nicely balanced with curry, rice, salad, egg and traditional Malaysian pickle. Worth for price!

This place proves that you cannot judge a place by its appearance. It's a shabby dining place, but food is fabulous!<br/><br/>We ordered:<br/>1. Chicken satay (starter) - flavourful; Peanutty!<br/>2. Seafood laksa - humongous portion! The spice made me sweat towards the end. I found it a tad sweet though, due perhaps to the coconut cream.<br/>3. Beef rendang nasi lemak - wife ate this and said it was comparable to the one in Papparich<br/>4. Beef teriyaki - too salty for my son's liking. I tasted it though and it was fine by me.<br/>5. Roti with chicken curry -my cousin had this. She recommended this place, so obviously she had no choice but to sing praises of her dish.<br/><br/>Paid 79 dollars for everything. Very reasonable.<br/><br/>Definitely would come back!

This used to be my go to place for Laksa 5 or 6 years ago. Last time I went back it was 2 years ago, but the Laksa became a bit too salty. The most recent time I tried the laksa at end of October, it lost a bit of its flavour :S. My Malaysian friend said this place makes the best Lobek.<br/><br/>Customer Service: 6/10 <br/><br/>Food: 7/10 <br/><br/>Atmosphere: 6/10<br/><br/>Date: October 2017

Very nice Malaysian cafe type restaurant. Lunch prices are great and service is very quick. I often try the Mee Goreng or the Chicken Curry Laksa.
Thom
Selera does pretty good Malaysian food, particularly better than many others which tend to have the curries taste instant, which I'm quite sure is the case. They have many varieties on the menu that is really lovely to see. Not the best dining but it is the idea of 'kopitiam', it just gets busy that sometimes makes it not too appealing.
Guacamole
Been there twice the first time was fine the food was very yummy as we ordered the chicken. But the 2nd time we had ordered seafood and prawn. The taste was delicious but turned out we had a food poisoning!!!! My partner got sick right after and me after in the morning i had to called sick at work. It doesn’t worth it at all. So be careful before you step in there

Food: 3 1/2***<br/>Service: 4****<br/>Atmosphere: 3 1/2 ***<br/>Price range: $15-$25/person<br/>Worth it: 3.5***<br/><br/>Went there for lunch & dinner twice last month. Super busy at the weekend lunch period many ppl queued up, we got 2 seats after 20mins queuing.<br/>We ordered a Malay chicken rice dish & a fried radish cake dish. The chicken dish was tasty, tasted like the one we had in Malaysia for holiday. The radish dish was interesting and not what we expected.<br/>Staffs were friendly. Price was reasonable as it's in Newmarket. Average cost $15 for a dish, portion is a bit small.

This is my favourite 'cheap eat' in Auckland, you can never go wrong with Selera! My favorite Malaysian restaurant, the roti is second to none!
Jaffa
This place is an institution in Newmarket and for good reason! They are quick, efficient, authentic and tasty.<br/><br/>The laksa here is amazing, but this time went for roti with chicken curry. The roti was amazing warm and flaky and curry very rich with good spice. Find the bones a little hard in a curry but it’s worth it for the flavour.<br/><br/>They are always packed at lunch so go early if you want a table. You can order at table but need to go up to pay (no credit cards accepted).<br/><br/>Definitely authentic and delicious!
Jsun819
Ordered:<br/>Fish collar soup<br/>Wonton soup<br/>-$30<br/><br/>The portion of the fish collar soup were quite large and can definitely be shared among two people or if you're eating for two. <br/><br/>Flavour was intense, a little too salty for me though. Service was I guess alright if you're just looking for a casual meal, everything in super fast pace, literally just in and out.

Best Laksa in auckland. Mee goreng is delicious. Beef rendang full of flavour, this place always seems busy.staff are nice. Maybe phone order to avoid wait
Ashleigh Michelle
Would definitely recommend Selera! I've only been there once after walking past every day noticing how packed it always was, and now I understand why! The food is good size portions, full of flavour and comes out fast. I had the Char Kiew Tau which I really enjoyed. I'll be back soon to try the popular Laksa!
Bryan
Usually when we come by here we are on the way to another restaurant or its just been a case of no tables available....so just walk on by.  I had heard it was popular so the mass of customers was to be expected.  Anyway this time we did manage to squeeze into a table inside, though there was a few available outside. The welcome is friendly enough and the atmosphere good.  From the decent choice on the menu i chose the Mummy Chicken with Rice , my other half chose the Wong's Spare Ribs with Black Pepper. You have to order then pay before your order is given to the kitchen.  Water and tea is self service by the counter.  Our order came out pretty quickly and we were not disappointed. My chicken with the mummy sauce was so delicious( actually reminded me of a dish i had once in a little nothing flash but very popular restaurant in Shanghai .....which was a good dining experience ) The whole dish was cooked so well and i could have eaten a lot more. My other half enjoyed her ribs too and i tried some and was equally impressed. Overall,  service good; food great; atmosphere good ; but the price maybe a little bit much....but still would return!!
Hungryfoxbb
Absolutely love their food. Good, prompt service and even though they are always packed, the wait isn't too long. Cosy but loud atmosphere. I would say I have at least tried half of their menu and I am yet to be disappointed. Generous portion sizes, reasonable pricing and very delicious food.<br/><br/>My favourite from Selera is their fish collar noodle soup which I get nearly every time I come here. They keep their foods up to the same high quality every time and as long as they are this good, I will always be coming back for more :)
LilMiss Foodie
Love their Laksa and their Flat Noodles ❤️ It is a bit pricy side but it won't disappoint. You get free hot tea for dining in. The Serving size would be generous for one person. We got our food in less than 5 minutes, which is great! Staff is average, not too friendly- somehow just wants to get the job done. However I do recommend this place. Will come back
Dennis Kee
Food is good especially the curry laksa which in my opinion is still the best in Auckland. But i absolutely hate the service and the attitude from the staff. They are far from friendly. And they are not very consistent with their "pay first" rule. I was requested to pay before I eat. Sitting right next to me was a kiwi couple, they were introduced to their table, made their order and left alone to eat without paying first. I found this double standard extremely provoking.<br/><br/>Update two years later:<br/>Gave it another go after two years with the hope that customer service has improved. Funny thing is what happened to me two years ago happened again. I ordered a curry laksa and hainan chicken rice. I was asked to pay immediately before my order could be passed to the kitchen. I did that without a fuss. Five minutes later a Caucasian couple sat down beside me. Waiter told them they can choose to pay later. Another five minutes later a Chinese couple occupied the other table next to mine. They were asked to pay first. The double standard was dead obvious and since this is the second time it has happened to me I have reason to believe there is an element of racial discrimination in their practice. Curry laksa today was not as tasty. Its broth has lost the richness it once had. Hainan chicken was still top notch though. Price has gone up again. I feel that if they want to charge more dollar than papparich they need to improve their ambience and customer service. Right now, dining at Selera is basically like sitting in a crowded food hall where everything from crappy dinnerware to messy self service drink station feels cheap. And the silly double standard for paying is not acceptable.
Chico
I'm not a big fan of this restaurant.<br/>Their food are average, salty, expensive for the standard. Their service, the decor and cleanness were below average. I wouldn't go back.
Emma Kostanich
Gold cheap eat spot, super tasty and filling feed for a great price! It's crazy how popular this place always is and it's testament to what they do. Chicken Laksa is my fave dish here.
Sophie-fern Wright
Had a quick dinner here last night! Just ordered salt & pepper squid (YUM), garlic veges & fried rice! It was busy! Such a great spot for some delicious well priced food! Definitely coming back!

Been to maaaany Malaysian places. Definitely the best char kuay teow I've ever had! The best part was the noodles, which were amazingly soft and bouncy.
Svitlana Amelina
Last night I came to this cafe with my friends. My friends ordered 2 Laksa and I ordered Curry lamb ( it actually a little bit expensive than Laksa). I get a small ball of curry were like 2 spoons of food. (+ I paid for rice separately). I was very upset that I get a small portion. Nobody told me that is smaller than you can see on the picture. The waiter told me "Yes, I know and it just for chicken with bones you can get like from the picture. It is ok". No, it is not ok. You need to tell the customer. I ordered because I saw like other people eating a curry and there was a huge portion and I expected to have like that. I have gone home hungry and upset.
Benedict Uy
Stopped by for late lunch around 1:30 and it wasn't too busy. It is normally packed. You can get a table and a menu and then you head up to order and pay when you're ready.<br/>You can generally get most things on the menu and not be disappointed, although food envy is quite common. My general go to is the char kuay tiew. The noodles are nice and chewy and the flavours are just amazing. Portions are better than I remember.<br/>Cheapish tasty food so a nice place to stop by for lunch.
Chuchueats
Always a winner with their classic hainan chicken rice! I love this place. Price is reasonable and the quality of food is always delicious. Food is quick to arrive to table after ordering, which is awesome! And it always looks so fresh and tastes even better ! Not many faults at this place!
R-Dee Roche
One of Newmarket's best treasures! It's basically an institution. Everything on the menu is a must try. The only downside is the fact that they can't take bookings and it can also get very noisy. Be early to avoid the queue.
Lulu Wang
Compare with the Mama rich cafe inGreenland, this one's staff really being rude and disorder. Kept me wait for 20 minutes for just the curry chicken rice
Sara V
This place is really busy and we waited 10 mins for a table. Ordered beef rendang which was really tasty. The food came out within 15 minutes which was good. Asian style food that is cheap and cheerful but you do feel you have to leave as soon as you finish eating, due to the queue of people waiting for a table.
Karen B
Have been here a couple of times recently and the food has been average and below average. Tonight we started with pandan chicken, which was nothing more than 3 pieces of deep fried, verging on undercooked, chicken wings with a pandan leaf tied around the outside. There was no taste of pandan whatsoever. The prawn noodle soup dish, for $20, contained TWO prawns. The soup was ok but not great. The broccoli dish was almost cold with an uninspiring sauce. In summary, we felt there was no love in this food. We won't be retuning.
AJ
Having heard great things about Selera, I came with pretty high expectations, and I wasn't disappointed. Laksa was creamy and flavourful - my favourite item on the menu so far. Because it's so rich, it can become a struggle to finish the whole bowl by the end. Rendang was among the most tender I have ever had, however we felt the other components of the nasi lemak was just so-so overall. Char kuay teow was pretty good, but lacked punch. Lor bak was much too sweet for my taste and looked burnt. Kon low mee had very lightly crispy wontons and the noodles and pork was okay.<br/><br/>Also, one day they were very busy and got my order mixed up - gave me chicken instead of seafood laksa. I was starving so I didn't notice it was chicken until dug into it and couldn't be bothered to have them take it away. They noticed eventually, and brought a bowl of seafood laksa over to my table which I awkwardly refused because I had almost finished my nevertheless delicious chicken laksa. Hot tea and water provided for self-service. Great value and tasty overall, but I almost always come here just for the laksa to be honest.
Priscilla Khang
We got the fish collar soup and the mi goreng. The portion of the soup is insane! Definitely enough to feed two people. The broth along with the texture of the fish that has been deep fried and then put back in the broth developed great depth of flavours. I requested for mild mi goreng that was really enjoyable however the downside is the portion. For $15 it's not good value for money at all. I also glanced around at other diners and could see portion size is lacking with other dishes such as their fried rice. So if you are very hungry, I would recommend ordering any of their noodle soup dishes.
Kylie
The look of the restaurant caught me off guard at first, but there's a saying that the more rundown places usually have the best food and that definitely applies to Selera. <br/><br/>It was very busy when we came and while there was a wait to line up to order, the Laksa came out very quickly considering how packed the restaurant was. The flavour was amazing and the portions are so large I almost couldn't finish it, great for those with a big appetite. Would definitely recommend!
Breadzania
We ordered nasilemak , fried kuay teow and curry puffs. The rendang is too sweet. I can't taste the coconut flavour of the rice and also there is no ikan bilis. The kuay teow is oily and average.
Vinmanrules
This is my favorite Malaysian place. If you dine in I cannot think of a negative. But if you do plan on buying the take away dishes, especially the ones which are priced higher (without rice, idea being you get more of the meat/veg/dish), the quantity will surely disappoint.
BAbyWin
The nicest and authentic Malaysia food I had in Auckland. Me and my partner's favorite is their Fish Coller Noodles. It is a must order dish everytime we came here. Also highly recommend their Nasi Lemak and Curry Puff. Although it is inconvenient to park and hard to get a place during dining hour but we still come back. Their staff are very friendly and polite Malaysians.
Ffionachua
I enjoy the flavours from Selera. Although some might argue the authenticity of flavours in some of the dishes, I think the dishes are as Malaysian Chinese as it can get. <br/><br/>The service levels however is a different thing - they're always too busy to serve you properly, and can be a little abrupt and dismissive sometimes. <br/><br/>If you're looking for good food, this will do the job, but be prepared for the lack of service finesse here.
I_like_pickles
Place gets really really busy during peak dining hours. <br/>Quick service. Self service for tea and water.<br/>Parking is difficult near the restaurant.<br/><br/>Top picks from the menu:<br/>Nasi lemak. Great flavours and good portion size.<br/>Fish collar noodle soup. Generous portion and the soup is soooooo good<br/>Hainanese chicken. Love the rice and the sauces.
Tanz
Yea an ideal place for a quick lunch or dinner in Newmarket. <br/>Very popular and you may need to wait for a while in peak hours.<br/>Big serving size, fast serving speed, good service. <br/>Routine customer here.
San
EVERYTHING is delicious!! Char Kueh Tiaw being my favorite! Their wonton soup is the best I've had! <br/>The spring rolls are so fresh n crispy! One of the things I miss about Auckland is This place<br/>
Edmund Luk
Very disappointing lunch. Have they change chef or owner? Everything are either too much salt or too much pepper. Not recommended at all....
ACO
A total disappointment.<br/>We ordered a seafood laksa,  2 chicken dishes (Gong Bao & another) & a beef dish (Beef Rangdang)<br/>Most of the dishes we ordered were too sweet & too salty. Laksa was the only dish we finished.
Raymond Tiong
Visited in 2014 and found it a bit pricey given the portion sizes – but the quality of food was pretty good. <br/><br/>My butter fillet fish was nice; an acceptable level of spiciness (but only 2 cucumber slices for veges). My friend's Wat Tan Hor had a decent amount of seafood.<br/><br/>I remember the tables being small and the restaurant feeling crowded, but service was fine.<br/><br/>I'd be happy to try this place again.
ShoRt
This place is a busy little restaurant. Hence I had to wait for a little while for my food. You have to order up at the counter and find a place to sit. <br/><br/>I thought the food here was average and price is more on the expensive side. However, it is one of the decent Malaysian restaurants, if you ever have a craving.
Queena
I know quite a few people actually rave about this place but I don't actually like it that much. <br/><br/>First of all, their customer service is not all the best. And yes, they're always busy and they are Asians (hate to stereotype but we all know it's true) and they don't give two sh*ts about customer service. But the guy that served us -was next level IDGAF. Told us to get out of the way so he could wipe the table and when we asked if we could order he did in such an attitude and pointed us to pay. There was no line and no one in particular was at the counter/cashier and then he'd say in monotone "over there!" And pointed in the direction we were meant to 'lineup to pay'. Like whoa ok chill bro. Maybe if you did your job properly we would know. Far out. <br/><br/>Food - was alright. Wasn't spectacular or good. I ordered the pineapple fried rice. Looked boring but it tasted ok. Big portion. But that was it. After a few more spoonfuls, it got very salty. And I don't like to waste food so I had to eat it all despite how thirsty I got during and after the meal. We also got the fried buns for entrée and it wasn't bad. The weird mung bean paste (I think) they had as an option to dip the buns were a bit weird. <br/><br/>But other than that, I would not recommend anyone to go there and I wouldn't go there again. Unless I was forced to.

Food was not as good as we expected it to be! <br/>Me and my partner Arrived for a cheap dinner as we had a long day. <br/><br/>Sat down. The waiter who served us was completely bland and didn't smile one bit. Even when we smiled at him. Food came out, I had the Mee goreng noodles with chicken. Fairly average. <br/><br/>My partner ordered the spicy chicken with rice... it was completely overpowered by the excessive amount of prawn paste that had coated the chicken. <br/><br/>We also ordered spicy green beans on the side to share, it looked nothing like the photo on the menu. No chilli whatsoever but instead had been cooked and coated with another excessive amount of prawn paste. That was enough for us to pay the $50 for our half eaten meal and walk out with a bad taste in our mouths. <br/><br/>My partner loved coming here the past few years and doesn't want our last meal here to be their last
Jasmine Goh
The place opened at 11am. Went and had seafood laksa, wanton noodle and Acar. The Laksa was sooooo good, wanton noodle is very average and acar is abit too sweet. But overall it was quite good :) Will definitely go there for the Laksa again
Farshid Hakimi
One of the best Malaysian place I have been so far.<br/>For start I got stair fried round bean and bok choy. <br/>Enough for two people.<br/>For main orders beef rengdan and chicken cashew nut. <br/>Beef rengdan was amazingly cooked and spicy enough too. <br/>It was a second best I ever had.(and first one were my mother in law cooked).<br/>Chicken cashew it came up with a lot of cashew nuts and fresh cooked vegetable and enough chicken ,perfect combination and tasty.<br/>Customer service were pretty good too.<br/>We had our food under 10min at the very busy time.<br/>Well done guys.<br/>Must recommended.
Christian
A good place for a hearty lunch on Sunday. It does get very busy and their most popular dish would be Laksa! Good efficient service too. I will go back.
Andrean
The place is always busy which is a good indication on the food that they serve. We come to this place for several times, trying different dishes and we love them all 😊

An interesting place if you're in the area and crave some Malaysian food. We were greeted right away and given a table. The menu has quite a lot of choices and once you ordered you're directed to pay first before they start making it. I had the laksa and my friend had the beef rendang. The laksa tasted good but the sauce was a bit sweet for my taste. Portion was good. I am so so with yellow noodles in my laksa. I'd rather have vermicelli. All in all this isn't a bad place if you want some Malaysian food. The price is a bit on the high end. Nothing below 10nzd unless you're looking at starters.
Anna Fern
I have been to this restaurant many times especially when I am craving for chicken laksa.  In my opinion,  their laksa is one of the good ones so far.  We tried different meals such as mami chicken, satay chicken, pandan chicken, lobak, Mee Goreng, Nyonya fried rice, dirty rice, Malaysian fried rice, beef rendang,  king prawn with oat, mixed vegetables  and salt & pepper squid. They were all very delicious however, I've noticed the consistency in saltiness sometimes vary.  <br/><br/>You need to be prepared with cash and EFTPOS payments only.  They don't accept credit cards and just like a takeaway shop you need to pay in advance right after ordering.<br/><br/>The place is small and is very popular, you need to wait quite some time to get yourself a table especially during peak hours.  Don't worry this is compensated with fast and good service.
Mikos
Pay before you eat? The selera I have known well for over 6 years is a changing. Friendly smiles still present but a certain weariness has crept into the service. The food is still above par so if you have a hankering for some hearty Malaysian fare and limited social niceties it could be the place for you. Can recommend the Nasi Lemak and the roti canai with curry. Many of the meat based dishes do suffer from an unwholesome greasiness. The walk to the toilet could do with a spruce up.
Winnie Luo
Great place to eat if you ate in a rush, the food comes out super fast.<br/><br/>This place is always busy and packed with people dining in and getting takeaways.<br/><br/>Food is nice but always a bit too salty for my preference. The chicken rice is the best dish with the rice being super flavourful and satisfying. The deep fried buns are always a guilty pleasure of mine, it is always served fresh and hot!<br/><br/>Prices are not super cheap and the place needs a deep clean everywhere as everything feels oily inside.<br/><br/> Overall a good place to dine when you feel like some comfort Malaysian food
Fiona Ong
Yum yum yum! Awesome Malaysian food at reasonable price! Their laksa is so goooood. The deco looks tired but the food makes up for it. The service is quick even though they are always so busy. Highly recommend! :)
Jay
My favorite Place to eat in Auckland. I love the curry puffs, fried buns and the Laksa. Its the best you can get. Full STOP. However, I missed the ice kachang they used to sell. They don't do it anymore, but would be perfect to have it back on the menu as a desert! 5/5
I'm Hungry
Have been here umpteen no. of times including this afternoon, as I work in newmarket. Needlass to mention this place serves very good, authentic, cheap, good quality food with fast service. I have tried various things here like Laksa (amazing), Curry chicken, Mami chicken, Gong Bao Chicken, Sambal prawns (love it), Sambal chicken (good), Sambal chiilie fish (average), Nasi lemak in all variations but the Beef Rendang takes the price for me here. You will see by the crowd, at any given day or time, that this is the most popular asian joint in newmarket. Must visit!
Denise
The food here tasted really good and I would definitely recommend this place based on taste alone.<br/>This place is always busy so it can be a bit of a mission to get a table and prices are a bit high compared to other similar Asian food places nearby but for the big portions and great taste it's worth it.
Fadilla Ruki
Best Laksa I've had in Auckland. Their butter fish rice is yum as well. Their laksa portion is rather big, while the fish & rice portion wasn't well balanced for me (more rice than fish)
Bobby Anderson
Great tasting food served up piping hot and fresh ingredients. Tonight our table had the chicken curry with roti and mee goreng. The curry was so good we ordered extra rice to soak up all the sauce. Mee goreng has a good mix of traditional flavours plus a bit of tanginess from sliced tomatoes.
Chumq
Ordered for takeaway. Called from work and drove in less than 15 mins it was ready and waiting. Ordered the hainan chicken rice. Good sized portion and very flavourful. Just wish they took credit card as an option for payment :)

Carving for Malaysian food and Selera came top of the list from Zomato. Ordered Nasi Lemak Rendang, unfortunately it didn't bring me back home, the rice fragrance missed the mark here.<br/>Laksa is good, however they should keep the same spiciness as original. <br/>Lobak for entrée and it tastes very authentic.<br/>Here are my rating:<br/>Authenticity: 6/10<br/>Taste: 8/10<br/>Presentation: 6/10<br/>Service: 8/10

One of the best cheap and cheerful restaurants in Auckland - this small and casual restaurant is in the Metro Top 50 Cheap Eats and it's easy to see why.<br/><br/>Selera is always busy and tonight was no exception. We were lucky as it only took us two minutes to get a table. A couple of "how to" eat at Selera tips: 1. You have to order and pay at the counter before you eat, 2. Tables are often a little sticky and 3. Table tissues are 1 ply at best so if you order something spicy you're going to need a few of those.<br/><br/>Chicken laksa was delicious as always (best in Auckland), good amounts of chicken and delicious fried tofu. Roti is a great addition to dip into that delicious laksa sauce and wok fried green beans were yum. We ordered way too much food and had to pay $0.50c for a takeaway container. Everything's is super cheap - $60 for way too much food! <br/><br/>As I said, Auckland's best Laksa can be found here - definitely worth a visit.

Fav eatery in new market! Small and casual but amazing food! Nothing fancy with decor or service (few chairs and table) but food wise packed with authentic flavours. This place is always packed especially weekends (sometimes there is a waiting time.) Their wontons are amazing and roti with curries! Price wise very affordable my husband and I spent $50 for two dish, extra roti and wontons. If you want authentic Malaysia/Chinese flavours this place is a must visit!

One of Auckland's many Malaysian eateries, Selera probably ranks in the top 5 in terms of authenticity, price and taste in my opinion. Although prices are quite steep ( ranging from $15 to $20 for individual noodles/rice dishes), the food is gooood AND the best part is that they serve sambal ;D<br/><br/>What I've tried:Seafood Laksa (9/10) : Probably the best laksa you'll find in Auckland. The laksas here have the right level of spice and are served in generous portions ( 1 shared between two was the perfect amount for me). If you're a laksa fan, I'd definitely reccomend Selera's!<br/><br/>Carrot Cake(9.5/10):  My ultimate favourite dish here although this dish is frequently sold out over the weeknd. They apparently only prepare this on Fridays, so if you wanna try it out I suggest going on a Fri or a Saturday to not be disappointed.  Similar tasting and cooking style to Char Kway Teow, but instead of noodles it's served with cubes of pan fried turnip cakes; a must try!<br/><br/>Mee Goreng (8/10) : Surprisingly extremely tasty and also a generous portion size. This also comes with large prawns :D Would reccomend too. <br/><br/>Lobak(5/10): The most disappointing item on the menu I've tried here. Although it looked amazing when it came out, I found it to be lacking in taste and too be too oily for my liking. <br/><br/>Overall, Selera is a cheap and fast place to grab a quick meal either at dinner or lunch. The service is good and most of their dishes are delicious :)<br/><br/>Must try: Carrot Cake ( restocked on Fridays)

Hubby and I both find their food a little bit too salty. We understand that Malaysian cuisines are quite strong flavoured, but the carrot cake was wayyy too salty in my opinion. The Hainanese chicken contains more flavour than other Malaysian restaurants I have been to which was nice.
Diner8Here
This has to be my and everyones favorite Malaysian diner, just good food, company, price and a very simple menu to choose from. Always packed every time i drive/walk buy, as they have the best corner site on Khyber pass road in downtown Newmarket,  and reasonably priced too, so guys/gals go to a diner where the Malays meet and eat and not mind paying upfront first, so no eat n run offs.

This place is always bustling and they made me a vegetarian version of the fried noodles. Really tasty but couldn't help feeling it wasn't worth $15. The Roti here is beautiful.

Ordered a seafood laksa. <br/>Watching Master Chef programs, this was something I wanted to try at least once. So I did.<br/><br/>Either I don't understand Malaysian food or the food I ate wasn't cooked well! The sauce /laksa was quite tasty. But the scallops or other items cooked within this was something I found hard to swallow n push down my throat.<br/><br/>Basically, I couldn't eat wt I ordered. <br/>Money was a waste n I was left with hunger.<br/><br/>But I've heard mist ppl, especially Malaysians rave about this place. Try for urself!

Malaysia is a cultural food hub and you could truly feel that essence in this restaurant. It is however, a bit pricey and for health concious people, the grease would look terrifying.

So of course you have probably heard of Selera's laksas being probably the best in Auckland.<br/><br/>I would have to say no. It was definitely a good laksa but having tried paparich, mamak and mama rich. I don't think it can stand up to either of these Malaysian restaurants.<br/><br/>The service plays a big part since they are constantly so busy and this type of restaurant never really gives great service. But the annoying part comes when they take your order at the table then give you the sheet to pay before you order. It's definitely good in allowing people who got there first make sure they keep their seat - because a lot of people will just walk in a bags a seat when they weren't there first. But it's also rather inefficient for the less busy days, which is when we came. We would've been happy to just pay at the counter then sit rather than sitting, getting someone to take our order then have a paper put on the table and be told to pay before the order gets made. <br/><br/>I would definitely recommend people to try and and I loved their Hainan chicken and also this sweet noodle and wonton dish. I will say most of their dishes are on the heavy side of flavour so make sure you're ready for it!

I consider Selera one of the decent Chinese/Malaysian places in Auckland, however the quality of food and service here is slipping so fast while the price has gone up quite a bit. I would have given this place 3.5 if my last visit here wasn't so bad. I ordered my favorite Hainan Chicken rice and there were freaking hairs on my chicken skin. I was disgusted and tried to complain but nobody freaking noticed me as there seemed to be only one waiter that day, one waiter in a fully packed restaurant. And because this place requires you to pay before you can eat, I of course already paid for my hairy chicken skin dish. I ended leaving out the chicken skin, finishing half of my dish and waiting 20 mins to complain (without results) before I fed up and left. Another dish I like here is the fish collar noodle, however the price has gone up to $20/bowl and the cooking is not consistent, sometimes you have decent fish pieces, sometimes you stuck with fish bones. Anyway I don't think I'll be coming back here anytime soon.

Really good food, the chicken laksa and the mee goreng are full of flavours.<br/><br/>The only bad thing is, they use so much MSG, that after dining there, you have to drink a gallon of water.
Michelle Hwang
My friend suggested there to me. Ordered one Go Thai Noodles and one tofu salad. Wow! The noodles was exactly sour and spicy and very fantastic. All raw materials were fresh. But the tofu just was so so ... not crispy enough

Despite living only minutes away and constantly walking past Selera, I had my first ever experience on Wednesday! The food was delicious and the service was very quick! I'll definitely be returning again in the future!
Food 24/7
Came here around 3pm, not your usual lunch hour but this place was still busy ! We were seated quickly but took them forever at the counter to process everyone's order . They should probably consider a more efficient system . <br/><br/>Our food arrived within reasonable amount of time, We had the beef Rendang and Malaysian chicken curry with rice . <br/><br/>Both dishes had strong flavours, I really liked my beef Rendang it literally melted in my mouth the only down side was the saltiness of the dish, maybe it's a Malaysian thing ? <br/><br/>My partner in crime throughly enjoyed his chicken curry too, the meat fell off the bone when picked up and the curry sauce was authentic and had a suitable level of creaminess . Compare to other restaurants there was a good amount of chicken pieces whereas others were mostly dominated by the about of sauce received . Overall a satisfying hearty curry to be had again .

One of my favorite Malaysian restaurants in the town. Always yummy and always busy. It's hard to find a seat at lunch/dinner time. None of the dishes is disappointed. This time I ordered a take away Hainan Chicken Rice and yummy as always.
Irish Eyes
Disappointing given that previous reviews were impressive. Sweet and Sour Chicken was very average. It was a fairly small serving accompanied with a large serving of rice. The Stir Fried vegetables with Chicken and Cashews lacked flavour and the cabbage was overcooked. Slow service. The Fried Rice with Prawns was served to a diner at our table long before any of the other meals arrived. However, the small restaurant appears to be very popular with a lot of people as it was very busy.

Their Hainanese Chicken Rice is my absolute favourite, the chicken is well poached and the stock for the chicken rice is a perfect amount and not too much. I love their Laksa too, the vegetable and chicken flavours. Their Char Kway Teow is so flavoursome (definitely get the spicy!) and their Koh Loh Mee w BBQ Pork is nice (but still standard). For sides, the Crispy Tofu comes with sweet chilli sauce and shredded cucumber. So refreshing. Their Loh Bak roll is a must too; and comes with my favour Sriracha chilli. The service is efficient, they are always busy. They also have a few drinks found in Asian countries but not so much here like 100+ etc
Danny
Quick service and excellent value makes Selera one of the best restaurants in Auckland to get authentic Malaysian food.<br/><br/>We went here on a busy evening and were quickly seated the moment we stepped in. The place was super busy, but our orders were immediately taken and served within 15 minutes. I ordered the curry chicken rice which was delicious and quite well presented. <br/><br/>While the service here is fast, don't expect much of a personal touch as they are always busy. I will be coming back to try some of their other dishes too.

Selera provides some pretty good malaysian food in Auckland in my opinion. The portions are generous and price if not bad. The place is super busy and doesn't take reservations. The chicken laksa was really good, a good balance of spicy and hint of creamy texture. Although I have only tried one thing from here, the laksa has made a good enough impression on me that I am sure I will find myself back at Selera again!
Rona Dalgleish
Great staff and amazing food. Had the tofu starter then stir fry green beans with coconut rice for a main! So so tasty, I can't wait to go back.

05-DEC-2015 : Another Malaysian place I like when I'm in Auckland but it's a bit more effort to get to as it's in Newmarket. Love their variety of street food such as Hainanese Chicken Rice, Nasi Lemak, Carrot Cake and Kon Low noodles. This time we ordered some dishes such as the Salt & Pepper Squid which was pretty good and fried beans with minced pork. Personally I prefer to stick to the street food here.
Lubbly Jubbly
It was really busy for a week-night which suggests is a really good place to eat. Reasonable amount of seating available (all taken!) and the portion was pretty good.

This place is super busy - which is always a good sign. We were lucky enough to get a table for 2 on a busy Saturday afternoon.<br/>I really felt like a hearty bowl of chicken Laksa and of course ordered that, we also ordered the Kon Low Mee - I have never seen this noodle dish before but it looked very interesting. <br/>I had never tried Lobak and didn't know what it was, I asked a staff member who explained it was kind of like a sausage but kind of not.... love it! We of course ordered it!<br/>The laksa was delicious - the soup base is full of flavour, I was hoping for chicken on the bone but unfortunately they cook chicken breast and pull it. Don't get me wrong it was still tasty. The Kon Low Mee is a noodle dish that comes with a deep fried wonton-type skin and bbq style pork and sauce, it was really tasty and I thought the deep fried pastry added a nice texture to the dish. The Lobak was kind of like a sausage, it came with a chili type of sauce and was delicious. I will be back!
TinaS
Beware of the timing you visit this place, because it's often jammed-paked during meal time!! And once you have dine here, then you would understand why. The food is authentic Malaysian food (as vouched by Malaysians) and great value. Love the carrot cake there (although often sold-out) and the Laksa soup.
Richie Chewy
Best chicken rice dish in town and also try the laksa and curry chicken which won't disappoint . To avoid the queues, arrive early or post peak hours , frantic and fast serving staff so get in quick
Ivan Koay
My favorite takeaway place.. never fails to deliver great Malaysian flavours which are the closest thing to the real deal back in Malaysia<br/>Recommend the sambal chicken and also the curry laksa. Generous servings for a reasonable price

I have been in Selera in past and food taste ok, But yesterday I was vegetarian hence requested Megoreng without shrimp paste and egg, instead add tofu. The dish I received was just noodles with 4 stips of bakchoi n 3 pieces of Tofu. I understand that removing Shrimp paste alter the taste but I have tried in other Malaysian resturant same request and been surprised with quantity as well as quality for almost same price.I was disappointed to pay $15 for just noodles :( . In terms of service, its quite awkward. You order the dish to the staff and they will ask you to pay first? Overall it has degraded in quality.

A very good place to eat Malaysian cousin, this is the 5th time we are dining here and it won't be the last! Have been in Malaysia for 5 years and I can say Selera is the closest in authentic Malaysian Cousin that I had in Auckland.

This is a nice place to have Asian food, predominantly Malaysian. The decor and ambience need drastic improvement. Food quality is overall good. Staff is communicative, but service standards need improvement.
Whiskyncigars
Laksa was spectacular and I don't really like Laksa. The lombak was awesome.. Tasty as hell and kon low mee was different and super good. No complaints really. Priced right and made right. Boom! <br/>**Not a cigar venue

Giant Bowls ✅<br/>Pricing ✅<br/>Packed full of diners✅<br/>Taste?<br/><br/>Catching up with an old friend in New Market, we dined at Selera after noticing how packed the place was. <br/><br/>I love Malaysian food however I have found that authentic tasting Malaysian food is quite rare. We had a laksa and beef rendang. The laksa bowl were enormous and had very generous portions, however I found the laksa to be a bit bland. <br/><br/>The beef rendang on the other hand was AWESOME. Really tasty, not too sweet but still full of flavour and the beef was super tender. Will definitely come back for the beef.<br/><br/>Showstopper: Beef Rendang<br/><br/>Overall Grade: B+

Chicken Laska is on point! I feel like its authentic Malaysian food (sorry if I'm wrong!) and when I asked for 'spicy' and the amount of spice was perfect. The ingredients taste and looked really fresh and the food were good portions. The service was okay, I felt rushed, but their so busy all the time, so its understandable. hahaha
Kaushikc_32
The BEST Malaysian cuisine I have ever had. Enormous portion all tasting so good!!! really it was treat. Would advise people to have and look at the quantity and then place the order. The service is excellent , and for the time all first all six of us completely enjoyed the food and had nothing to complain about, would surely visit the place again.

I use to live right across the road from this place, and boy was that dangerous when my flatmate and I didn’t feel like cooking. Selera does amazing Malaysian food that is authentic, flavourful and such value for money. My all time favourite from here is their chicken laksa, actually SO GOOD. However, they often run out of laksa on busy nights, so definitely get in early to avoid disappointment! (Has happened to me too many times, learn from my mistakes!). Their other dishes are great too, like the mi goreng and Malaysian fried rice. Such an amazing little gem in Newmarket, a must try!

This my friends is a very popular restaurant. A bit small, but they serve delicious food. I would absolutely recommend this place to everyone.<br/><br/>Food: 8.5/10<br/>Service: 3.5/5 <br/>Ambience: 4/5<br/>Value: 4/5<br/>Overall: 20/25
Nikhil Gujar
This is probably one of the best Malaysian cuisine restaurant in Auckland. Their Samba chilli chicken is the best I have had in NZ to be honest. Definitely recommend this place and I always keep going back. Prices are reasonable too for quality Malaysian cuisine
SS
100% worth the hype! The seafood laksa is one of my absolute favourite dishes here and the only reason it's not getting a 5/5 from me is because multiple times we have tried to order the Laksa, they've run out! Despite being quick early in the evening. Still a must try!! <br/><br/>Have also had a few sharing mains, including the beef rendang, the pork chops, salt and pepper squid and all were enjoyable but I'd stay stick to the rice/ noodle dishes for value! <br/><br/>A good solid cheap eat in my opinion! Always satisfies!!! Ignore the decor and the service though, the food makes up for it!!!!! :-)

Stopped by Serela for dinner with a friend. My Mee Goreng was delicious!! 👌🏼 menu was great and staff were friendly. Only downside was the meal was quite small, especially for $15.

One of my favourite malaysian restaurants to go to, for lunch or dinner. I come here quite often and the food is always amazing. They have recently raised the prices, which is a little disappointing but I guess they need to keep up with the world. <br/><br/>The portions are huge whether you're ordering single dishes or shared dishes - you definitely get your moneys worth. <br/><br/>The restaurant however does get extremely busy during dinner time and it can be hard getting a table. The staff are also rushing around, can be slightly rude/ blunt but I don't care too much because the foods amazing. <br/><br/>One of my favourite dishes is the Butter King Prawn. You can choose to get it with or without shell, I like to get it with shell. They give about six decent sized prawns. <br/><br/>They're laksa is also amazing and massive! Super filling, super delicious, would definitely recommend trying it. <br/>

Always loved their until one day that they updated their price for each meal. Average increase by $2-3 per dish. Portion is small, dishes are tent to be a little salty. Always busy place, go there before mea time to avoid waiting in lines.

Selera is our go to place whenever we're craving for Malaysian food. We always order their Seafood Laksa as for us this is the best laksa in town. It is spicy with a hint of sweetness and definitely full of flavour. The serving size is generous as well - can be shared by two if you're not too hungry. Another favorite would be their Chicken Curry w/ Roti. The crispy roti goes really well with the flavour of the curry. Their Dirty Rice w/ Breaded Chicken is also good although a bit overpriced in my opinion. I like the sweetness of the rice as it matches with the chicken but I would suggest adding more pieces of chicken would be better. The tofu w/ sweet & sour sauce is also a nice entree if you're looking for a vegetarian option.<br/><br/>Overall, I would say Selera is one of the best Malaysian restaurants in town. Would definitely visit them again when I need my Malaysian fix!

oiiiiiii OIIII OiiiiiiiI!!!!!!!<br/><br/>okay so my friend said we were going here for dinner and ive never been so i was like yeah ok m8 and we arrive and its PACKED (gr8 sign) we had to wait 10 min for a table so i looked at everyones food on the tables and the PORTIONS ARE HUGE. <br/><br/>i mean i love this cause means you can share stuff and im into that if im gonna be frank<br/><br/>we ordered the chicken laksa, sweet n sour pork and vegetables in oyster sauce.<br/><br/>ALL WERE SO GOOD. sweet n sour pork was summa the best ive had in my 21 years. very crispy, not too over powering , just delightful eh.<br/><br/>chicken laksa was SO GOOD, great amount of spice. vegetables in oyster sauce was just bok choy in oyster sauce but im SO OK with that cause bok choy is my favourite vegetable.<br/><br/>u get FREE tea which is dope cause i hoon it hard so i can digest my food faster/ eat more food. big fan.<br/><br/>its really cheap too.<br/><br/>im going back. i dont care about making the trip. it was delicious<br/><br/>(the other reviews that say this place is ok are LYING TO YOU) anything below 4 stars can piss right off

In result of our last experience, I give this place a rating of 3. The service is incredibly slow and inattentive. I'm not sure what dish I ordered last time but I remember there was an overwhelming aversive taste of fish paste, yuck!<br/><br/>Since this place has high reviews, I'm willing to try again.
HJ
This place always seems to be busy! Specially during lunch times, not one I'd recommend for groups unfortunately as the table size space isn't very generous. The decor is simple and so is the service. Help yourself to tea and water and for first timers - remember to pay after you order. The food is served promptly which is great considering how many people come through. <br/><br/>We ordered the mixed vegetables ($22) and the crispy tofu ($8), the chefs weren't very compromising as we asked for tofu to be added to the vegetable dish but they said they couldn't do it. Both dishes were tasty! However based on the dishes we ordered they were what I'd consider expensive for the portion size compared to other Malaysian places that we've dined at. <br/><br/>Fortunately we managed to find a carpark right outside but often it can be a bit tricky! You'd be best to find a carpark around the back on teed st.
Michael Kingston
What ever you do - don't order the prawn soup - I got soooo sick after eating it - I only live around the corner - have eaten there before no problem - I have rung twice to speak with manager - no go - I will never go back - minus 1 out of 10

Best laksa in auckland!<br/><br/>Selera is ever so popular its always packed and have to wait to get a table ;) <br/><br/>The laksa is amazing, rich full of flavour fragrant and addictive! Hainan chicken is so tasty and tender, perfect with chilli sauce and the chicken rice is so flavoursome. <br/>Love the chicken salad and the chicken satay entrees <br/>Must go malaysian if youve never been before!
Tanz
Oh my!! I have been waiting to come to this place for a long time but it was always busy. Luckily I went there today for early dinner (around 5.30pm) and the place was pretty empty but when I left around 6ish, the place just packed like normal again :)<br/><br/>I experienced my first time here with simple Malaysian dishes; Laksa and Roti Canai with Curry Chicken. <br/><br/>Laksa was absolutely spot on!!! It was so tasty! full of flavors. And it came in REALLY BIG bowl! I had seafood laksa, it had couple prawns, couple squid and few fish balls. It's become my favorite laksa in Auckland for sure :)<br/><br/>Roti Canai with curry chicken, it doesn't look appealing but mannn the taste was 'so damn good!!'. It was creamy, tasty, not too much spices but still can taste the Indian spices. It's so hard to explain how good it was, you have to try it yourself ;)<br/><br/>I will definitely go back there and try other Malaysian dishes. The service was really good and the place is nice and clean. I love the menu with pictures. Highly recommend to everyone!<br/><br/>2nd visit - 5 days after first one :P<br/>This time I went on Friday night and the place was so busy like it should be. Luckily I got the table within 10mins. I tried Pandan Chicken which was bigger than what I thought it would be. It wasn't like what I expected. I had Thai style pandan chicken which is chicken pieces wrapped in pandan leaves and fried them but here they are chicken wings which tiny pieces of panda leaves wrapping around. Anyway the chicken marinated in some curry paste or some spices and it was good. The sweet chilli sauce that came with was nice, not just normal, too sweet of sweet chilli sauce. <br/><br/>I also had nasi lemak with beef rendang. The rice was nice, it was just plain rice. I think they cooked rice in broth or coconut milk (I'm not really sure) It was really good. And the beef rendang....ohhhhh it just melted in your mouth!! So goooood. I really like this dish. Selera...you made me happy again :)

Laksa versus laksa week :)<br/><br/>Being a fan of this coconut based curry soup, whenever I venture to a Malaysian place, this is always my first meal of choice.<br/><br/>This is a popular eatery, where there is no fuss on décor or service. You get what you order, and I’m perfectly happy with that approach for my $15 seafood laksa.<br/><br/>Soup stock is tasty, fragrant and full of nice textures such as fried shallots, bean sprouts etc. The actually seafood selection is always above average and of good quality compared to other places. The noodles are tasty, not too slippery to handle and well cooked. Portion sizes generous, and what I do love the most about this place, is when you get the token half boiled egg with your bowl, it is indeed warm, not fridge cold.<br/><br/>Definitely worth a trip to newmarket for lunch.
Miss T
One of the best laksa I have ever eaten (and I love my laksa!) The place is always packed at lunchtime but the food delivery is speedy. They have very good prices for their generous serving size's.
HangryChow
Best laksa I have tried in Auckland!!! Unfortunately the prices have gone up last few years and the portion sizes have gotten smaller but the quality of the food remains high! The service is acceptable but unfortunately i tend to avoid the place these days because it is just to packed and busy! They definitely need to move into a bigger venue!
Javier Yebenes
Very good food at a very reasonable price. I've had lunch here many times and the portions are generous for the price paid. Staff are not super friendly but they are very efficient and attentive. Good for a quick lunch but not ideal for groups. I really like it!
Foodie Traveller
This place came highly recommended from friends but didn't live up to the hype. The beef rendang was overly sweet and the chicken laksa was on the salty side. The staff seemed disorganised and was not fully educated on their menu and what was on offer. No bookings allowed. You can get better Malaysian food at Food Alley for less $$.@
CrazyCatLady_EmmaC
Been going to Selena for the past 6 years. The food is amazing! Love their nyonya fried rice and Laksa. Would suggest to go before 6:30pm to avoid long wait for table/food.
Food Adventures With AnnaJ
Just went to Selera tonight, an average Monday. The place was just over half full and we got menus brought to us straight away. From the pictures on the menu everything looked so good but was in the mood for noodles so ordered the Char Kueh Tiaw, flat noodles with chicken, prawn and Chinese sausage. The food was brought out super quick which was great. I loved that it was piping hot, fresh from the wok with the egg still cooking. The portion size was perfect, enough that you were full but not enough that you would over it. It was a bit lacking on the chicken and prawns and the Chinese sausage had a really strange taste. The flavoring had a nice amount of spice but was too salty for my usual liking. <br/>For someone that hasn't eaten much Malaysian food, I'm willing to give Selera another go but will have to try something else on the menu.
Kirsty Cardy
I once went on a mission to find Auckland's best Laksa, as a friend in hospital said that's what she felt like. After a few good online reviews, I headed to Selera, and I nailed it! I truly found Auckland's best.<br/><br/>I now have no idea why I haven't heard about Selera before! Operated by a Malaysian family, you can't get any more authentic than this, and it shows in the flavours of the dishes (and the way the menu reads).<br/><br/>The small restaurant is always busy. The food is always fresh with the vegetables crisp.<br/><br/>My new regular for take aways and a casual lunch or dinner.
Aniva Huang
I finally got to try this place after hearing all the rave about it. <br/>Selera seems to be a very popular restaurant and I've heard nothing but good things about it. Sadly when I tried the food everything tasted quite salty.<br/>The noodles I had tasted almost like the packet seasoning you get with instant migoreng. <br/>The deep fried tofu was definitely the highlight of the meal. <br/>I'm going to give Selera another try another night.
Samantha Gemmell
Absolutely love the food here, it's a great cheap eat. But the service pretty much doesn't exist. I've been here a lot and quite a few times they have stuffed up our order and forgot to cook one of our dishes so one person will have already finished their food while the other hasn't even gotten their dish yet. A lot of the time you can see the dishes sitting at the front getting cold while the waiters just stand there away with the fairies. I would not come back here if it wasn't for the food
Kwan-Lyn
This is a very popular and busy Malaysian restaurant in Auckland. Though I've been here many times I've only tried the hawker style food here. The food here is on the pricier side compared to some of the other Malaysian places in Auckland.<br/><br/>Would personally recommend the Hainan chicken rice (the chicken is cooked to perfection) and fried carrot (radish) cake (not easy to find elsewhere in Auckland and often sells out so go early!).
Ryan
Really good Malaysian food but always busy. Haven't been back for awhile but need to go again soon. Recently went to KK Malaysian but didn't compare to Selera. Well priced and good service.
Food Is My Love
Went to Selera for the first time for for dinner with my wife and my cousin. The staff were friendly and their service was Ok. We ordered the vege laksa, roties and some noodles. The food came out very and the portion size was massive for the amount of money we paid and the food was really delicious! (What else can you ask for!!) Especially laksa was the best. They really know hoe to balanced different flavours and make food super flavoursome. <br/>The only negative thing about their service was that we had to wait long time too find our table and the staff refuse to book a table for us and ask us to keep an eye on the tables where people are about to finished with their meal which was kinda unusual. <br/><br/>But our experience was great! And I will surely go there again!<br/><br/>Food: 5/5<br/><br/>Service: 4.0/5<br/> <br/>Value: 5/5

This place is very busy and comes highly recommend! We eat here often and we always know what to expect: tasty food with good Malaysian flavors!
Nitya Lakshmanan
Had very high expectations about this restaurant. However, was very disappointed with the food. Being from Malaysia the food didn't taste Malaysian at all. The service was really good but the food wasn't great.
Di
I went there this afternoon around 3pm after finished some work off in the office, I ordered a vegetables laksa plus a piece of roti. I love the laksa soup, hot and rich, not very spicy, suitable to have in the freezing winter. The roti is just crispy and delicious...will be back definitely
Rebecca
From reading the previous reviews, I had very high expectations from Selera. Upon walking in I was satisfied - the place was acquaint and vibrant. I ordered the Chicken Laksa, which lived up to my expectations and was very flavorful, though a little bit too salty. However my rating must be brought down due to the fact that I was served mildly warm tea and the fact that even though the food is already a bit more towards the expensive side, they still charge you for takeaway boxes.
Kahu
Snapper lip enjoying his shredded chicken soup. With a few swimming prawns and extra chilli his lips were really at their snapping best. "Thanks Selera!" he said. <br/>Great attentive service🍜

I've been a couple of times, but it's been a couple of years since I've last been as the restaurant is always full. The staff are friendly and the food is very quick to come out, making it a fast and convenient place for lunch. The portions are decently-sized despite the prices being a bit higher than your average Malaysian restaurant, but the food makes up for it.<br/><br/>One way to distinguish how good a Malaysian restaurant is, is by the taste and quality of their fish head noodle soup. Sneakily renamed fish collar noodle soup at Selera, any Malaysian cuisine snob will know what they mean, and this one did not disappoint. We also had char kuey tiao, which had good toppings and huge prawns, and a chicken laksa, as most of the tables with a party of more than one had at least one of these. Though just a tad on the salty side, the laksa was excellent, making it a very good and filling lunch.<br/><br/>Selera has excellent Malaysian food for relatively good prices, but go early to avoid the lunch rush! You won't regret it.

Selera is one of my favourite places to eat at for Malaysian food. The prices are good and dishes always very flavourful. Highly recommended!
Manda Little
We get takeaway from here on a regular basis... The curry Laska is divine... Order it with a mix of seafood & chicken for extra flavour... My bosses are Malaysian & they highly recommend it as being an authentic representation of the real deal!

Came in on a Friday night and was a bit worried as it was busy - not a fan of waiting. However definitely giving high points for service as despite being a full house, our order was served pretty quickly. I had shredded chicken noodles and the curry puffs and they were amazing! Friends also loved their dishes and I'm happy to say my wallet also loved this place as their prices are decent for Newmarket. Definitely the place to go for good Asian cuisine at a low price.

Best Seafood laksa in Auckland. If you like decent Malaysian  food which is affordable, Selera is the place to go. Don't expect the best service (it's efficient though) but you can guarantee, you'll get an amazing laksa! Get in quick as it's a small restaurant and is always busy.
Gentlepig
I have to say, the famed Selera made me come away with mixed feelings - on one hand, the bustling establishment yet uncharacterful service makes the first impression a tad wary. The other, the laksa produced here truly is world class. Supremely balanced, not too hot and not too strong (there's a fine line between spicy and just explosive) it complements the noodles perfectly. I suppose really, that's what made Selera famous and kudos for maintaining the standard set many moons ago. If only the rest of the menu and their service staff could match the aura cast by the chefs.

Best ever laksa in New Zealand. It's just very very delicious and they are consistent to deliver the flavours. The atmosphere is a simple  and humble.Prices are also reasonable.$15 laksa is a very generous portion.Highly recommended.

Food 4.5<br/>Value 3.0<br/>Atmosphere 4.0<br/>Service 3.0<br/><br/>Its me again ordering Char Kwai Teow!! It's very yummy. but I think I'll properly get sick of it because I've been eating char kway teow in every single Malaysian restaurant. The ingredients are very fresh especially the prawn. The textures Itself are very springy and firm. Spicy enough to give extra point for the dish. It's definitely worth to wait for 20 minutes to get the seat. :) <br/><br/>Second time ordered Fish noodle soup, delicious as usual, but i will prefer rice noodle (smooth one) rather than rice vermicelli. Portion is huge would be just enough for 2 people. <br/><br/>well. but it still can't bit the best Malaysian restaurant in New Lynn, think its the crispy pork fat made a lot of contribution to remain the no1 of Char kway teow in my heart.

Always come here with friends. They have very good food, good proportion and food price. My favourite is their mummy chicken and hainan chicken rice. Recommend .

Selera serves up authentic Malaysian food and is a great cheap eat. I've been here a few times now and always find myself gravitating here while in Newmarket. <br/><br/>The food is super reasonably priced and the portion sizes are large. The restaurant is not huge and is always pretty busy, however I have never had to wait too long for a table.<br/><br/>Some of my favourite dishes include the beef rendang, the flat rice noodles and the chicken laksa, which is always piping hot and so tasty! <br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/>

Malaysian at its best!  The noodle and rice dishes are as good as it gets out of Malaysia especially the beef rendang, prawn noodle soup and laksa!  I come here on a regular basis as it is great value for money!  The cafe is a family run business, with the original cafe 'KK' in Manukau and the new 'Mama Rich' in Greenlane!!

Well, I'm only going a four as I've been here quite a few times and it has been a little bit inconsistent. Just a bit, mind! Sauces have been spicier and saucier on different occasions but no biggie. I think it's all pretty good. Would recommend for lovers of Malaysian food. Prawn Nasi lemak is my fave

Good food and not expensive. Very popular spot for lunch.<br/><br/>Good variety of Malaysian food. Not a very big fan of laksa but the laksa here is really nice, pretty much like the specialty dish.<br/>The servings are generous and the food is brought out fairly quickly so its definitely a good place to visit if you are strapped for time.<br/><br/>Another plus point is that they have 2 serving sizes, the normal and full serving just in case you are really really hungry<br/><br/>Personal favorites are the mee goreng and gung bao chicken.

This is my 2nd time here. Came here a few years back when they first open and was terribly disappointed the first time round. But decided to give it another go since I keep hearing people raving about it. Well, sorry to say this will be my last time here. <br/><br/>Service - pretty much non-existent. And the food took ages to arrive even though we were there early.<br/><br/>Food - we ordered Char Kuey Teow, Mee Goreng, Prawn Noodles (Har Mee) and Fried Buns. My portion (Har Mee) was decent size but my hubby complained that the portions for the fried noodles (Kuey Teow and Mee Goreng) was much smaller than our fairer/western-customers in the next table. Not good. Taste wise, well the Har Mee was all sugar-sweet rather than the sweetness you'd get from quality stock. <br/><br/>As for both the fried noodles, it was a real miss. To be fair, it was tasty but not authentic. It was just plain fried noodles rather than your REAL, authentic Mee Goreng. If it's the latter you're after, well don't bet on it. If you just want reasonably fried noodles, then it's passable dish. <br/><br/>And the Char Kuey Teow? Don't bother; no 'wok hei' aroma which is essential in good ones. The best Char Kuey Teow in Auckland is still in Manukau. <br/><br/>As for the fried buns, well be warned that these are tiny, tiny buns so from a value point of view, it's too expensive and not worth it. Kids loved it but hey, which kid doesn't love condense milk as a dip?<br/><br/>Such a waste of our time really.
Don Vogel
Quite a crowded and popular spot, but one can see where they cut corners to keep the prices down. The food is fair,, but beware that some items (like pineapple in the pineapple fried rice) come from cans and taste of metal.<br/>Don't expect great service - actually it's borderline rude.<br/>That being said, the prices are reasonable.

Been twice and both times have been impressed! Had the laksa curry (chicken) and it was one of the best I've ever had! Timing on food (entree came out after main) was a little off but the fact the mains came out so quick certainly made up for that! Will definitely be returning!
A Culinary Affair
The back story: A humble yet cheerful little shop on the corner of Khyber pass and Osborne street, Selera has been a place of happy food moments for me and good company countless times. I first tried Selera 4 years ago - and have been going back regularly ever since.<br/><br/>Food: The food is authentically Malaysian - flavoursome, generous in serving sizes and assorted in variety from your tradition mee goreng and laksa to less well known, but no less traditional oat crumbed prawns and mummy chicken. I have tried many dishes here and everything has been so good, it's difficult to fault. My personal go-to is their chicken laksa - not too heavy on the coconut with just the right amount of spice, it oozes flavour the moment you take the first spoon in your mouth. Crunchy bean sprouts liven up the dish with half a boiled egg soaking up the soup as a bonus vehicle for taste delivery. If you're wanting something more substantial, I would recommend the dirty rice - crunchy fried chicken on egg fried rice - again done well, without the excess fattiness that other fried chicken may carry. If you have guests a want something special, the oat prawns are worth trying. Sounds doubtful at first - but this combo really works with crunch and the special sweet-salt flavour of the nestum oat. This cereal is not something you can get locally and has a distinct flavour akin to horlicks and malt. Different but very yummy and very Malay ! They provide free tea and water too from big jugs - also very typical of Asian food places, adding that authentic touch. The only downside I can think of of their dishes is the mee goreng which I find a bit too sweet and heavy on the tomato. At $15 for mains it is a relatively cheap eat though for generally good and generous servings of food.<br/><br/>Setting : The decor here is simple - though the outside tables with animal print spice things up a bit. Simple pictures line one wall but otherwise there isn't much - but like the street stalls or side tea houses you get in Asia, the decor reflects this. They even have pull out tissues and plastic chopsticks in a holder to complete the setting.<br/><br/>They also have a pay before you eat policy when ordering too - so something to be aware of as it's a little different to most food places, but does make things more efficient when you can just leave at the meal end.<br/><br/>Occasion: Casual cheap eat out, for small groups but difficult for big groups due to restaurant size.<br/><br/>Revisit potential : 10/10

you need to try this!! this place is the best malaysian in town.. the food is so delicious and the prices are awesomely cheap.. just located off Broadway the place doesn't look like much but once you try this you won't be disappointed .. the seating is very limited so I usually try and come here during the non busy hours when dining in.. favourite dishes are mee gorgeng spicy noodles, won ton noodle soup, seafood laksa, roti bread, dirty fried rice, curry puffs and sweet fried buns.. when I do order takeaway i always ring from home and order as the wait time when busy is usually about 20-30 minutes .. again you need to eat here and you won't be disappointed
Foodiesfeast
This may be a cheap eat but it's a five star for flavour. Never dissapointed when eating here. The soup bowls are massive and sure to fill you! My favorite dish is the hainan chicken with coconut rice. Good food, good price, my kind of restaurant.
Georgie @ Georgieats
Dinner for $17? Yes please!!!<br/><br/>After reading consistently great reviews about Selera, my sister and I finally decided to try it out, as it is also close to the cinemas on Broadway. <br/><br/>Selera is a very casual eatery, serving no alcohol and you order at the counter, despite been given menus when you sit down. At first, this was weird and confusing for us, but the food made up for it!<br/><br/>I ordered the Beef Rendang ($14) and Coconut Rice ($3). I had never tried coconut rice before, but a friend had recommended it, so I just knew I had to try it! The Beef Rendang – wow, what a huge portion! It was incredibly tasty – full of flavour with just the right amount of spice and the best thing about it was that I had it for lunch the next day! The coconut rice was just as delicious - highly recommend!!!<br/><br/>My sister ordered the Kon Low Mee ($13.50) consisting of pork, noodles and a yummy sauce. It was also a huge portion and bursting with flavour. She had enough for leftovers the next day too! <br/><br/>We visited again a few weekends’ ago and while I wanted to be a bit more adventurous, I couldn’t go past ordering the Beef Rendang and Coconut Rice combo that I enjoyed so much the first time. My sister however went with the fried rice with prawns (so good) and guess what!? – we both had leftovers for the next day! We also ordered a side of their Fried Buns (6 pieces for $7) for dessert – served with a condensed milk and sweet puree sauce. Perfect way to end the night!<br/><br/>As well as serving tasty meals, they also have a ‘help yourself’ tea station. Jugs of hot tea to accompany your meal and you can have as many cups of it as you like. Canned cold drinks (some don’t have English names which we tried) and a water cooler are also available.<br/><br/>Service both times has been quick and efficient and you do not have to wait long for your meals. There is always a short wait for a table (you cannot book), but I ensure you that once you try a meal at Selera’s, waiting for a table won’t even matter.

After a long absence I went back to selera for lunch today. Same menu very fast and friendly service. Food was nice but not as authentic as I remember it. I will go back again.

This is the best Malaysian food I've had. Been there a couple of times now and never dissappointed. Quick service, hot and tasty food is all in looking for in a good restaurant!
EatsByZee
Selera is just how Malaysian food should be - hot, crowded, plentiful and good value. The bowls of noodles are large, dishes flavoursome and if the crowds are anything to go by, extremely popular! <br/><br/>We dined here recently sharing the seafood laksa, fish head noodles and chicken curry roti chanai. The laksa was spicy and full of sea food pieces in a rich curry soup with thick egg noodles. The fish head noodles had a milky and gingery luscious soup that was soaked up by thick rice vermicelli. The chicken curry packed some heat but the gravy was perfect for mopping up the the roti chanai. These dishes were ideal for the unbelievable early cold snap that has recently hit Auckland. <br/><br/>There is serve yourself water and tea. Orders are taken at the counter and paid before the dishes are rapidly brought out to your table. If you can't wait, take away is available. Definitely give this place a try if you are wanting a little taste of Malaysian cuisine.

I have been here once before and the food is just as good. This place has consistent quality and also cheap to decently priced food. I ordered the wat dan hor (favorite malaysian dish ever!) and they definitely do it justice. their salt and pepper chicken main is also delicious. we also got the lobak roll for an entree and that was rather... unique. it didn't suit my tastebuds but my boyfriend loved it! Great place to go for cheap and tasty malaysian cuisine! We will be back!
Dimitrios Konstantopoulos
Great food, feels a bit like sreet food experience. Would like to be able to pay with my credit card but overal a pleasant experience. Service typical Malysian, nothing to worry about, somehow self service drinks.<br/>Give it a go, you will appreciate the food.
Rojas
Probably one of my favourite Malaysian restaurants. When I go there the place is often packed but the staff and great and attentive and make sure you're not made to feel like you're waiting for a table. The laksa is definitely one of my favourites, with great, strong flavours that feel like they've been marinating overnight!
Alwayseating
Best Malaysian food around!<br/><br/>Get the Laksa and the Roti Canai with chicken curry (bones included) the taste is 10/10<br/><br/>Good food, fast service and cheap!
Aditya
Food is really delecious....my first visit to an Auckland restaurant.<br/>Ordered prawn dumplings and nasi lemak which were just yum!<br/>Worth the money...<br/>
Cindy Ong
I am from Penang, Malaysia the state of hawker (street) food. And when I was back in home town I dine out every day and night. I definitely in the right position to judge if the food is authentic and taste alike what I had in Penang. <br/>Selera they have very good food unfortunately if you sit in their restaurant, you will feel stressful as the owner of the shop always likes to scream at her workers for mistake done. <br/>If you like something spicy, try prawn noodle and curry laksa (note that curry laksa is not laksa from Penang).
Nummynum
The veges in oyster sauce was yummo. Unfortunately found that anything fried, in my case the salt and pepper squid and deep fried dumplings was too greasy. Nice enough experience. Try to get there early though as this place packs out quickly after 530.

Possibly the rudest and least helpful staff and service. I have no idea why this place is so popular. Every time I have tried to order dinner, I've had to wait for at least 20 minutes to be served, even though it doesn't look like staff are busy. Even when I've walked in late (9pm) with only a couple of tables occupied, staff still seem to take a very long time to respond. Last week I walked in, waited for a good chunk of time at the counter to be served. Eventually I got noticed, started giving my order, and the checkout lady started talking over me, said "excuse me sir, you will need to wait *picks up calculator, punches in numbers, shows me the calculator* 20 minutes okay?!" I responded "Oh, are you busy?". Her response "What do you think sir? Do you think we are busy?" Ah, no thanks. Many more great and deserving places I can spend my money at.

My family and I came to Selera for lunch on Sunday because the yum cha up the road had a long wait. I had heard good things about Selera and when we walked past them, they were packed (a good sign) but we were able to secure a table without a booking and without having to queue.<br/><br/>An informal cafe setting rather than a formal restaurant, the service is good but casual. Timing was fine considering how busy they were. Tea and water is on a help yourself basis and if you like to share (like we do), you can get small bowls to eat from.<br/><br/>Decor is ordinary and unfussy, the dining area isn’t big and a little cramped, though they have tables outside which extends their dining area. <br/><br/>The menu is quite big but has photos to help identify each dish. The chili symbol is handy for those that enjoy heat or want to avoid it. We ordered four dishes to share and these just happened to be four iconic Malaysian dishes: Char Kuey Tiaw, Chicken Curry with roti, Nasi Lemak with Beef Rendang, Hainanese Chicken Rice.<br/><br/>All four dishes were delicious. The chicken curry was larger than expected and the noodle dish was smaller than expected. The spicy dishes (marked with a chili icon on the menu) packed a little heat but were not overwhelmingly hot. I like only a mild amount of heat and I found all the dishes were at good level for me. For those that like it hot, you might want to request more chili. <br/><br/>My favourite dish was the beef rendang. It had great flavour with aromatic spices and a super tender “pulled pork” texture rather than the chunky (sometimes chewy) pieces I’ve had in the past. Char Kuey Tiaw, can often be too oily but this was very good. We just wish there was a touch more of it. I couldn’t fault the Hainanese chicken rice, though I prefer a chunky chili sauce rather their smooth version. They do not serve this dish with broth/soup on the side. The chicken curry was delicious and you get two pieces of roti which is generous. The only thing is the chicken pieces (bone in) are large making it a bit cumbersome to eat. Smaller pieces would be better.<br/><br/>The food was authentic and even the dining setting experience was pretty authentic. The dishes we ordered were $13-$14.50 each, good value for the quality of food. I can see why they are so popular. Happy to come back for a casual meal and to try their Laksa. Groups should book.

This place is always good for a quick bite, that's cheap and has a variety of Malaysian food to try. Their seafood laksa is hands down one of the best laksa I've ever had. Even recently visiting Malaysia I still prefer Seleras'. I recommend trying their lobak roll, char keuy taow, mummy chicken... heck I recommend everything, it's THAT good!
Suyuan Liu
Seafood Laksa is good tasting and also very price efficient for casual dining. The flavour is rich while sufficient ingredients. The number of supply is limited so there is possibility running out of supply, which is the only draw back.<br/><br/>For entry, Satay Chicken is also very tasting.
BMG
This place is a hands down win for cheap and cheerful. I love the huge containers of tea and reliable menu. Staff were friendly and food was very quick. The only downside was that on my last visit my salt and pepper chicken (which usually is the best I've ever tasted anywhere) had no chilli on it. Apparently the chilli makes that dish!
Charlee Brown
Either the chef has a sweet tooth or was having an off day. Dry wonton noodle.sauce was sweet, the wontons were the really good and the only thing that wasnt sweet but they <br/>were really small - kinda like the size you'd get in malaysia. We also had nasi lemak with beef rendang, couldnt finish it because it was too sweet. The beef was very tender though, just wish they'd left out the sugar. We left disappointed, but in saying so we had good curry laksa and assam fish on rice here about a year ago.

The food came fast! Since we had the yum cha at the Grand Park in the afternoon, so our 'combat effectiveness' wasn't that high! <br/>2 small dishes for starter. The broccoli with soy sauce was good, hmmm! what can you expect from a broccoli?? Pandan chicken: very South East Asian! Not my thing ha. <br/>There are so many similarities between Malaysian food and Cantonese food... I like my chicken thigh noodle, it came with Hainanese chicken~ but! I couldn't finish all, check out the giant big bowl! The Malaysian fried rice was not good enough, plain. Overall, not impressive but good value for $.<br/>
Bella Lily
Very much falls into the cheap and cheerful catagory. I have eaten from here many times and have never been disappointed. The food is incredibly tasty and full of flavor. The decor/atmosphere is less than desirable, however the food makes up for it. Highly recommend.
AngeLi
Authentic Malaysian! I'm giving this place a 4.5 just because the place is too small so we always end up standing to wait for a table. But the food is just amazing. Their Laksa and beef rendang is so yummy! :) this is our go to place when we want a good malaysian meal. :)
Moira McFarland
Had been going here for years and the consistency is excellent. The simplistic setting and minimalist atmosphere ensures that the focus is all about the food. The food is vibrant, fresh and gives you a taste of south east asia that would be unforgettable. The laksa is generously portioned and they got th balance of flavors just right. Try their fantastic king prawns , the are succulent and devine, my personal favourite is the sambal king prawns. The nasi lemak is flavouful and packs the right punch. Would be a fantastic place to go as a group, but you would need to make reservations as it does get busy or with that special someone for a fuss free night out. <br/>
David Hardy
An enjoyable authentic Malaysian experience. I had the Tofu and Hainan chicken. Quick service and an extensive menu, although one dish missing is Char Koay Teow, one of my faves. A good value place to go and I'd go back again.
Amanda Yim
Service was good , however we got the roti and curry chicken and mi goreng the curry was a bit too salty and mi goreng was ok didn't have a wow factor or anything .<br/><br/>
Katerina Hond
This place is perfect for a quick cheap eat because they are super fast and provide you with a massive portion size and great value for money. Can be a little hard to find a table because it is very popular now but so worth the wait.

After seeing some good reviews I decided it was a good time to check out Selera with my mum! It was super full when we arrived but luckily a table became free very quickly.<br/>We ordered the Nasi Lemak beef rendang, Char Kueh Tiaw, and curry puffs. Everything came out quite fast. The Nasi Lemak and Char Kueh Tiaw were both soooo tasty and full of flavour. Two different dishes that went really well together! The curry puffs were also a good compliment to the meal. <br/>Overall it was a really good experience. The service was okay, the food came quickly and was delicious, and it was reasonably priced... Not much else you could ask for! Would 100% recommend this place to try!
Marina S
A hidden treasure in Newmarket, this restaurant appears humble but has got some of the best food in (arguably) the entire Newmarket area. The staff are fast and efficient, and the food does not take very long for a restaurant that is almost always full. The portions are large and definitely worth the price - which as an added bonus, is quite cheap and tastes amazing! Would definitely come back.

I absolutely love Selera!<br/>My mother has been coming here for a few years  now, and I just cannot get enough!<br/>The decor is very minimal but i love the ambiance.<br/>They also offer free hot tea which is great!<br/>The waiter John has the best service skills and always approaches you with a smile! He is very attentive and always ensures that you have a great experience. <br/><br/>We have tried the seafood laksa, nasi lemak with chicken curry, assam fish, butter fish, and just recently the chicken noodle soup. I have enjoyed all the dishes but i think my favourite would have to be the seafood laksa and nasi lemak with chicken curry! Their rotis are also very nice to eat with the chicken curry. Every new dish we try turns out to be great and we will be returning for a long time :)

Vegetable laksha is my favourite and alltime pick from this generous food outlet. <br/><br/>It serves good portion size meals and perhaps the best prepared laksha known to me. And it is pocket friendly too.<br/><br/>Thanks to my generous friend who has introduced the lovely place to me.
Kiwi Foodie
This humble-looking eatery is run by first-generation immigrants from Malaysia, and they serve up wonderfully authentic, delicious Malaysian food. The decor is simple enough, as is typical of cheap Asian eateries, though thankfully they have given the characteristic fluorescent lighting a miss. The place is warmly-lit, with wooden paneling and flooring, imparting a rather cosy feel. The waiters are very efficient, and typically don’t keep you waiting long.<br/><br/>We have been here countless times, and in fact this is our go-to place when meeting up with fellow Malaysians from out of town. Needless to say, we’ve tried a wide range of their dishes, though their nasi lemak with beef rendang, hainan chicken rice, chicken hor fun and seafood laksa are my favourites. You can choose either individual dishes such as those I mentioned, or a variety of mains to share, with rice on the side. We rarely get the mains unless we are here with a larger group, and in my opinion the individual dishes are better. As a matter of fact, their beef rendang exceeds most of the ones I’ve had in Malaysia itself – beef in Malaysia is typically tough and bristly unless you get the expensive imported variety, whereas Selera has the advantage of New Zealand beef. The beef is tender and juicy, the rendang sauce full of spicy coconutty goodness.<br/><br/>The only dish we’ve found to be a disappointment so far was their roti canai. It tasted like the pre-packaged supermarket variety – Mamak on Chancery has much better roti canai. Despite that, though, Selera is probably the best all-round Malaysian restaurant near the CBD, though Blossom Court in Panmure gives them a run for their money, for the folks living out east.
Thefoodloverrr
I am a malaysian,so I know the authentic taste of the malaysian food. I would say they have really good laksa(curry mee) and the nasi lemak was not bad either. I tried their lobak for the first time and it was yummy. The portions were big too. They should try to find a bigger place as the demand is quite high.

-Really good. I think it is quite authentic tasting, but then again, how would I know really. Lets just say if I was rating it against other places in Auckland (which I am) these guys do really well!<br/>-Servings are generous definitely going back soon. <br/>-The Laksa is really good and absolutely HUGE :) <br/>-Service is nice too. Friendly/straight up/will discuss the menu without making you feel like a fool.<br/>I was really jealous of everyone else's food, so will go back soon.

One of my fave Malaysian places to eat. Love the chicken laksa and cha kway teow. Been there a few times and it's been consistent. Best thing is that the food is served hot and fast. Cheap as well.

Selera is one of the more famous Malaysian restuarants in Auckland. The restaurant is not large, and was already full when we arrived. Luckily, we managed to snag a table after a couple of minutes and quickly ordered a few dishes before heading to the counter to pay. It feels odd to sit down and then pay before receiving your dishes, but I get that logic. We ordered the Acar Awak, which is Malaysian Nyonya-style pickled spicy vegetables. These were unlike anything I had ever had. I love pickled vegetables, and this one tops my list. Its hard to describe- I kept getting surprised every time I took a bite because it was just unexpected? The slightly spicy (laksa/ sambal-flavoured sort of spicy) vegetables retained their slightly crunchy texture which was just sublime with the sprinkling of peanuts on top. I wasn't a fan of the chicken salad but that might be a personal preference kind of thing. All their dishes looked really good from what I eyed up on neighbouring tables. Can't wait to come back to try other dishes here! Their laksa is also huge- definitely a dish to share between 2 or 3 people.<br/><br/>I would highly recommend the Mee Goreng- we couldnt get enough of it, and DO NOT miss out on the Acar Awak!! It's a must try for sure. The dishes tend to be quite sweet though.

Looks can be deceiving, this little restaurant is great with good value for money too. The service is not that great, but expected! I Recommend the Laksa, delicious.
S Moon
The best Malaysian place in Auckland. I've been there many times and every time I try to order something I haven't tried before. Always successful as everything is delicious there. Their Laksa is simply the best and seems to be the most popular menu there (you can see the laksa bowls on almost every table). Always packed with people and sometimes have to wait for table to be freed but worth the wait.
Nick Hutchinson
I have been going to Selera for about 2 years now and finally I have found great Malaysian. I can’t go past the Laksa but on the odd occasion it’s “run out” I have found the other Malaysian dishes fantastic. Avoid the Chinese food here there’s better elsewhere.
Annette Collins
We have been going to this place for years and it is true the food is great, particularly rendang and chicken curry.<br/>However I have a concern that their prices are escalating and the quantities of their main courses are decreasing. <br/><br/>We got takeaways for quests and the $19 dishes were quite small and not good value at that price.<br/><br/>Eating in the atmosphere and the service is fine for a cheap and very tasty meal but not for the prices they are now charging.<br/><br/>I also not they have suspended their lunch specials which is a concern also.<br/><br/>I hope they read this and note they so not want to destroy a great little restaurant, one wonders if they are selling.
David Parussini
Superb beef rendang, was told the chicken laksa was awesome, the salt and pepper spicy squid so-so and the service pretty ordinary - arrived early so beat the rush, definitely worth visiting for tasty Malaysian cuisine.
Tony Ma
Their food is delicious, however a little on the pricey side for what they offer.<br/><br/>Authentic taste, and my family love to eat here! Wait time a little long and annoying, however the restaurant must be good since it's always busy.<br/><br/>Must try if you love Malaysian Food!<br/><br/> Service: 4/5<br/> Wait time: 3/5<br/> Environment: 3/5<br/> Food Quality: 4/5<br/> Food Quantity: 4/5<br/> Price range: $25+ pp

Happened upon this place by chance and what a surprise. Very busy so was expecting good food and was not disappointed the chicken curry was to die for have been searching for a place that makes yummy curry as many places are falling short and have found it highly recommend

I have eaten at Selera Malaysian Restaurant at the bottom end of Khyber Pass Road several times in the last couple of years, and have always found the food tasty and reasonably priced, and the smiley waiter courteous and sensible.<br/>Tonight a friend and I ordered our meals in a half full restaurant. Then we waited. My friend's food was brought to the table after about 12 minutes , and he proceeded to eat. I waited, and waited, and waited. Other diners around me who had ordered after me received their food. I waited. After 30 minutes waiting, and my companion well and truly finishing his meal, I still had no food.<br/>I walked out after 35 minutes still unfed. There was no sign of any manager offering any sort of explanation or apology, unless having the cashier suggest I could pay for it as a takeaway was a substitute for service. Hah! I had come for a sociable meal with a friend, so we turned down that somewhat desperate offer.<br/>Perhaps the management of Selera should look up the definition of the word "hospitality", seeing that is the industry they operate in.
Pete Macaulay
I love laksa and was looking for a quick lunch so dropped in to Selera. It was crowded, but I was offered a table within minutes. I was looking forward to a good laksa, and was not disappointed. Excellent flavour and not too spicy hot, but with a good "bite", noodles al dente. A large serving. Yum!<br/>While I was there I saw they had Hainan chicken rice on the menu. Another of my favourites. I'll have that next time, because I will be back. Service was good, a little off hand, but that is to be expected with number of people eating. Recommended

The worst Asian food place I have ever been to!!! Shocking service, shocking food and ridiculously overpriced.<br/><br/>I went tonight and ordered chicken and vegetables to takeaway, there was no price noted (it was in Asian symbols). They told me it was big enough to serve 2-3 people and charged me $19 which I felt was a bit steep. The meal came out, no rice and a portion only suitable as a side serving for one person. I had to pay extra for rice.<br/><br/>Got home to my friends to eat a small and flavorless meal. There was no chicken in it, the vegetables not fresh and the sauce was very tasteless. When I called to complain that I had paid $21 for a small portion of veges and rice without the chicken they told me I was wrong and that was what I had ordered when they had repeated what I ordered back to me when I paid.<br/><br/>Disgusted with this place. 0 out of 10!!! Would not recommend anywhere that serves a dish called "Dirty Rice".

Went here for a quick lunch, almost self-service but excellent value for money. Meals took longer than expected to arrive. Would recommend for a low-cost easy lunch.

We always go here when craving for Malaysian. I just love the chicken curry! My bf loves the hainanese chicken. This place is pretty much one of our all time fave. We will definitely go back again to bring family and friends :)

In one word...YUM! Last Friday was the first time I've been to Selera. It came highly recommended to me so I had high expectations for the food, and I was not disapointed! The cuisine was deliciously authentic, generously portioned and came super speedily even though the restaurant was packed out. The prices are also very reasonable, so I was definitely be coming back!

Selera never lets me down! Every thing I have tried on the menu has been delicious, although my favourites are the Chicken Laksa, Beef Rendang and the Dirty Rice. Absolutely delicious and authentic, value for money and quick service. Plus free Green Tea with every purchase, Highly Recommended!!

If you want tasty Malaysian food you will do a lot worse than this place. My favourites are the seafood laksa, roti chanai and the nasi lemak. The high numbers of asian people that eat there tell you everything you need to know about the quality of the food

This is a great little place, which I frequently come back to. Selera is often pretty busy and has a good range of tasty dishes. Its a shame I don't work close by now as the lunch specials are great.<br/><br/>The Chicken Laksa here would be my favourite in NZ, it isn't the most traditional with shredded chicken but I actually prefer that as its easier to eat without bones. The flavour is just great and if you don't come earlier during lunch or dinner it can sell out, as this is a popular dish.<br/><br/>I also am quite fond of the Hainan chicken, the rice is actually cooked with chicken stock. The only thing is I would have liked to have a bowl of chicken soup with it like you often get in Malaysian.

My partner and I eat here weekly or at the very most fortnightly and find it hard to try other restaurants when we know the food here is so ridiculously good! The place is always packed and it's unusual to get a table immediately, although the wait is never longer than 5 mins. We have slowly tried a lot of the menu and have never been disappointed - favourites are the beef rendang, salt and pepper chicken - which is fried with chilli, garlic, onion and thai basil and served on lettuce leaves for wrapping up all the yumness, curry chicken (with roti - OMG, roti is sooo good!) and char kuay teow. Laksa's, mummy chicken, hainan chicken and lamb curry are also yum!

Great food + better prices. The Chicken Laksa is indeed amazing - lovely balance of spices and a huge size. The Chao Kuay Teow is perfectly edging on charred, with a nice smoky flavour of Chinese sausage, egg and mung beans. The Beef Rendang is so good, fabulous flavours. The Wonton Soup is also really great - warming and a good salty chicken flavour.<br/><br/>The food does the talking and it speaks the loudest here - will be back very soon!

Came here today (on a Monday night) and it was very busy so we had to sit outside. Service is prompt and the seafood laksa is delicious. It was my second time having the laksa from here and it certainly won't be my last. We also tried the Selera Tofu which my partner really enjoyed. Spring rolls were average though. Recommended restaurant for a cheap tasty meal.

We went in on a busy sun avo at 3pm. It was packed!<br/>Had the char kwei tiew, average marks for this dish, small quantity for the price, no Chinese sausage. Flavor not quite complete.<br/>Pandan chicken wings, yummy.<br/>Curry puffs, not so good, had a whole egg but no potato. Not very curried.<br/>The Chopsticks and spoons had a greasy sticky film on it. Do they wash them properly? It didn't feel like it.<br/>I think I prefer Sri Pinang on K Rd.
Maria
Me and my boyfriend always eat here when we're in Newmarket. Their laksa is AMAZING. Not the nicest interior but the food more than makes up for that. Service is fast, too, despite the restaurant often being busy.
Ken Choong
Very delicious!!!! Good service<br/><br/>Gotta try their laksa, it's the best yummmm<br/><br/>Not too expensive either, you're looking at about $30 - $40 for two people well fed
Noemi
Just tried this place tonight. It was the only eatery packed on a weekday night. We both had the beef rendang. Generous portions and super tasty. Good value! Not terribly friendly service but who cares...they're busy serving the hordes of people.
Julie
Selera is one of our favourite restaurants, consistently fabulous, quick efficient staff. Best Malaysian in Auckland !! Make sure you try the laksa and the samba chilli dishes if you like some heat. The restaurant interior is basic but look past that and you will get to eat some of the best meals you could imagine outside of Malaysia.

I eat here regularly, they have a pretty good system here, food comes out pretty quick during busy lunchtimes, quality is ok as is the price. I'd recommend most things on menu, Laksa is ok, best hainanese chicken rice in Auckland, if not in world, just wish they wouldn't skimp on chilli. If your coming here during lunchtimes on weekdays its best to book or come early-ish, it gets quite packed.
Megan
Was recommended to us by friends and we were pleasantly surprised to find it very authentic and tasty. The Laksa was delicious, it was not too heavy or salty. The Hainanese chicken was very silky, just like in Malaysia. We especially enjoyed the Chao Kuay Teow as it had chinese sausage and a good amount of mung beans. A bit of a letdown was the Pandan chicken though, not flavoured enough. Overall, the service was average but the staff were friendly. Will come back!

We stopped in for a quick lunch on a Saturday and the place was busy, however the service was still really fast. <br/><br/>Have the laksa and you will not be disappointed.<br/><br/>We will be back.

OH EM GEEE defiantly my favourite of all places!! Although I live on the other side of Auckland I absolutely love this place I wish I cud have it everyday!!! But unfortunately for now it is a delicacy! Definitely my number one stop when I'm in or near uni! definitely top marks!
Philip
It thought this place had authentic Malaysian food with good flavours, but my Asian wife was not quite as impressed. <br/>The environment is similar to a foodcourt. Don't come here expecting a cosy restaurant as it is very basic.<br/>As another reviewer mentioned, this place tries to do everything they can to refuse bookings on Saturday evening. Every time I rang they said it was booked solid for the next 3 weeks, however when we did finally go, the place was almost empty by 7.00pm. If they don't want to take bookings for Saturday just say it rather than make excuses.<br/>Prices are average. Service was well timed.<br/>Cudos for the online promotion.<br/><br/>Would I go back - sure, the food was good enough and authentic enough for me to come back for.

Terrible. <br/><br/>We came back for the forth time and tried the fish head noodle. It was just perfunctory.<br/>How did they manage to put such quality out? It was not only overpriced compared to their quantity, yet the soup was very much lack of main taste(neutralized), noodle quantity is too little compared to price, &amp; the fish meat itself weren't that tasty.<br/><br/>I had laksa last time i came here and it was ok only. For a cheaper price, better taste and more quantity, one can choose to go to the Newmarket foodcourt, the Laksa house, or others. <br/><br/>BIGGER bowl doesn't mean better or pleasant or tastier food but it was trying to deceive customers! <br/><br/>Worth recommend? Not really. Perhaps the previous chef doesn't work there anymore, i'm not sure but seriously, i won't go back there anymore. Too expensive &amp; taste not up to standard! Or, basic standard!

I would love to try this restaurant as I bought a deal voucher for it, but in the three times I called to book they have nothing available. Not even two weeks away. It seems that they are screening Groupon patrons out as I was able to walk in and get a seat with no problem or if I call and don't mention Groupon I can get a reservation. <br/><br/>This is unfair practice and they should not take my money without offering seating within reasonable time periods.
Zahra Qasim
Fantastic food! This is definitely one of our favourite Malaysian restaurants in Auckland so far.

Went there for the second time today and was not disappointed! Believe them if they tell you it is hot... as i found out when i ordered the guong-bao. Lovely food.

Reticent to write a review because I like to get a table when I go there, but they deserve to be packed seeing as they are so cheap and so great. Haven't explored the depths of the menu but the laksa is excellent and the char kway teow fine as well. If there is better value food in AKL I'd like to know about it. Great lunch spot, walk out full and happy.
Lillian
Great Malaysian restaurant, I recently visited there and this place is fairly authentic and had a good selection of food on offer. Very simple decors but would definitely go back for more of their yummy food.

I had meals here many times when I lived close to Newmarket. The food is very tasty (especially curry with roti and cucumber salad).

This is one of the best Malaysian places in Auckland. This place is constantly full and having eaten there many times its no surprise why. Delicious!
Scott
This place doesn't look like much from the street, but is full of nice surprises. A 'Must Try' is the Laksa. Chicken or Seafood, doesn't matter, is simply divine. Hope you like it hot, you won't be disappointed.

Great Malaysian spot in Newmarket. I had the seafood laksa soup which was huge! I could only eat half. They gave a generous serving of seafood and the broth was fragrant and spicy! I didn’t appreciate the eggs they put in the soup but enjoyed all it’s other elements. Bit of a let down with the roti as it was extremely dry. Meals weren’t brought out together so there was a little bit of a wait but not too bad. This place it pretty small and very popular so you are lucky if you get a seat straight away. Great service and free green tea, splendid! :)

Selera does really good Malaysian food, it's quite authentic, even my Malaysian friend would agree. The beef rendang is really good but my ultimate favourite is the Assam fish fillet on rice, I usually ask for coconuts rice as a preference. The prices are cheap and the portions are large. It is quite a small place so sometimes it's hard to find a table. During summer you have the option of sitting outside.

Selera Tofu and the char kwei teow dish are the ones that interest my palate the most when it comes to Selera. Selera has never failed to whet a foodie's appetite.

The 4.5 is for their Hainanese chicken rice! - the best we have tasted in Auckland so far. <br/><br/>It’s great that Selera serves the Hainanese chicken and the chicken rice on separate plates, you can taste the flavour of the chicken and the rice separately. The chicken itself is tender, the pieces are just the right size, the skin of the chicken is clean and the chicken sits on some sauce (that’s probably mainly composed of light soy sauce) and bean sprouts and topped with some green garnishes with a few thinly sliced cucumber and a small dipping sauce. The dipping sauce is chilli sauce with some lime juice in it, giving the tongue a spicy yet fresh kick. The chicken isn’t greasy at all (like some other restaurants) and the flavour continues to expand in the mouth wonderfully.<br/> <br/>Selera also has other good dishes such as their curry laksa – it’s great for winter especially when you are coming down with a cold. The spicyness is just right, it is spicy but not to the stage where it is so overpowering that you can’t taste the flavour of the laksa.<br/> <br/>Our other favourites are the Mummy Chicken and the Butter Fish On Rice. They are very different but both are delicious. :)<br/> <br/>This little eatery is very busy so it’s always good to reserve/go there earlier during lunch. They also provide hot tea/water which you can self-service. Service is not particularly warm and welcoming but given the place is always so busy, I think the service is adequate.<br/><br/>We are sure you'll want to read more about it at our blog: http://foodcriticsanonymous.wordpress.com/2014/06/12/hainanese-chicken-rice-at-selera/

Fab cheap and cheerful. Love the salt and pepper chicken, beef rendang. Awesome laksa. One serve is enough for two healthy appetites!

Omg hands down the best Beef Rendang I've had in NZ, the flavour is strong and i love how the taste of the coconut is coming thru quite strong on the sauce. I had the seafood laksa that came in a big bowl with a lot of ingredients. Def satisfied with our meal!. Probably better to come early as i would assume it'll be quite difficult to find parking around the area. Can't wait to come again :D!!!.

Selera is fuss free Malaysian eatery; it's self service here, and there's bottomless hot or cold tea that you can refill yourself. While I find some of their dishes mediocre-but-still-tasty (since there are so many Malaysian eateries in Auckland and I've lived in Malaysia for 4 years myself), I am a huge fan of their Fish Collar Noodle Soup; tangy from the pickled mustard in slightly milky and sweet broth, it's a must in cold nights. I find their char kway teow good too, it does famous Penang char kway teow justice with heaps of Taiwanese sausage--a lot of places don't even bother--and it has a nice dose of 'wok flavor'.

I've been to Selera three times now (once for dinner and twice for lunch) and had something different each time. All of the items have been super tasty and very well priced for what you get. The fare is typical malaysian. I find it a little weird that you order your meal from someone coming over to your table and then you get up and go and pay at the counter straight away rather than at the end of your meal, or just ordering at the counter - but not really a big deal. <br/><br/>The chicken curry is REALLY hot - which it does warn you on one side of the menu, but not the other side (at the time I visited anyway), but still really tasty. The mummy chicken is highly recommended! <br/><br/>Meals were around $15 each from memory which is pretty good.

One of our favourite eateries, serving cheap and authentic Malaysian food. They make you pay in advance these days, but don't let that put you off.<br/><br/>Their laksa is not only delicious, but also comes in enormous bowls, so we sometimes see two people sharing one. Their fried carrot cake (made of radish and rice flour for those of you who aren't familiar with the dish) are beautifully soft on the inside and very flavourful. We also like their mee goreng.<br/><br/>For a longer review with pictures, take a look at my blog post at http://nomnompanda.blogspot.co.nz/2013/02/review-selera-malaysian-cafe.html

Been here a few times, my friend is Malaysian and her dad has a great place in Wellington, she believes this place is best in town. I'm not so convinced, but it is cheap and I guess authentic.

I had been craving Malaysian food all week so decided to go to Selera for an early, mid-week dinner. I arrived at around 5.30 and the place quickly filled up. Between the three of us we ordered the Spring Rolls ($5.50), Vegetable Laksa ($14), Beef Rendang ($14) and Mee Goreng ($13). The Spring Rolls arrived very quickly, and smelt wonderful. Nice and crunchy without being too greasy and they had a good mix of vegetables, not just full of carrot. The photo does not do the size of the Laksa justice, it was HUGE. Three of us tried our hardest but were unable to finish it. The Laksa was delicious, it was lovely and creamy without being too heavy and had excellent flavour and heat. It was filled to the brim with crunchy vegetables, tofu, noodles and my personal favourite, half a boiled egg. The Beef Rendang was not as dry as I am used to but this worked in its favour as I chose to have with roti instead of rice and it was ideal to mop up the extra sauce with the roti. It wasn’t too spicy (on the mild side even) but still had a lovely mix of spice flavours. The Mee Goreng was very tasty and had the perfect amount of sauce so the noodles weren’t too dry. The roti was unbelievably good, light, flaky and delicious and only $2.50 apiece. I look forward to going back and trying more of their menu.

A good laksa is hard to find. So when I ordered at Selera it was with some trepidation. It was a Sunday lunchtime and busy busy busy, with tables covered in exotic looking food. The laksa when it came was simply enormous. Fortunately it was not a case of quantity substituting for quality. I order a combination laksa which had lots of seafood, chicken, and a really lovely perfectly balanced coconut-y broth. Hard to find but oh so worth it when you hit a good one ...
