Review Honey Bones - Auckland Central

Lovely breakfast spot in Grey Lynn. Great atmosphere and food. The place was packed, very vibrant. We went for scrambled eggs on a toast with a long black. What else can you ask for a Saturday breakfast? 🙏❤️

We visited yesterday for the first time, all the way from Dunedin. My oat latte was amazing and nice and hot. Pretty latte art! Food was so unique, dishes that we haven't seen before. We had the mushrooms, salmon meal and the waffles. Incredible food and loved the vibe!

MERGUEZ & ZUCCHINI FRITTERS - must have dishes here. The merguez had the most delicious sausage rolled in the middle, complimented with roast potatos and flavoured with Mediterranean spices. The zucchini fritters were battered and fried in a ball shape. Served on a salad with a beautiful dip. Coffee was Supremes which was strong and delicious. The atmosphere was great and very busy.

Busy but nice, halloumi bowl was delicious and so was the ricotta pancake, smoothie was a little bland sadly and I’d love to see a proper vegan section on your menu please instead of “ask the staff” Also I had to ask staff for pricing of cabinet food as not labeled. Food was the highlight and I can see why it is a popular spot

We came here after the Grey Lynn markets and seeing people wait outside made us even more curious to try it out for our Brunch. The wait was around 45mins but worth the Wait!! Our oatmilk latte & Mocha was just PERFECT! The Menu is turkish fusion, our server was very sweet & great in making sure what we wanted. We had the Istanbul Scrambled eggs & Ricotta Pancake which was very yummy & filling. I would like to give a shoutout to the team, even being so busy they look after every customer very nicely with a smile :) I had initially ordered the platter but later had requested for the pancake instead, the staff was kind and took care of my request. Really appreciate that. Food & Customer service is great. Definitely recommend this cafe.

Bit of a wait on a public holiday, we had to put our name down and come back. Worth the wait though! Food was great, staff were friendly. Great little brunch spot. Coffee is a little bit slow, our food arrived first. But great coffee!

Very interesting place. Great recipes, nice balance. Chefs certainly put their heart and soul into the dishes. Ive ordered Mergez, inspired by classical Istanbul breakfasts, with lamb sausage. Great mix, very nice tzatziki. Only reason not 5/5 is that it was a little too fatty. Maybe switching to boil-roast potatoes will lessen the amount of oil. Must try lemonade. Wife tried Istanbul scrambled and that was 4.5/5. Deep fried sage is genius.

I had high expectations for this place and yet… they were completed exceeded! Zoe and Daniel gave us the most amazing service! Will be back

Totally loved the Mediterranean/Turkish/Middle Eastern touch of the menu, didn't have to go for another eggs benedict.... The merguez dish was a dream come true, so many flavours and ingredients, great portion, exotic spices, good sausage! Also the haloumi dish was a great mix of eastern flavours, the egg alone was exciting and the cheese the real thing. Plenty of food. The flat white was excellent as well, honestly haven't had such great coffee in a cafe for a long time. Lots of nice staff around, thanks!

flavours!! Delicious little spot for brunch. The menu was packed full of healthy options. We had the halloumi salad and kumara on toast, both portions were super generous and absolutely delicious. 4 stars because they don’t have a toilet!! Had to go to the pub up the road?? Don’t over do it on the sparkling water 😅

This a great little breakfast spot in the Grey Lynn part of Auckland. Coffee is on point and well priced. Flat white and long black were delicious. Their breakfast has a lot of middle eastern influences. My wife had the Cilbir eggs which was poached eggs over Greek yogurt with a chili oil, dill, and rosemary. It was a powerfully flavorful dish with a touch of heat, just enough nothing overwhelming. I had the Bones granola which was seasonal fruit, berries, and housemade granola over yogurt with honey. It was a delicious way to start the day. The staff are kind and helpful navigating the menu. Please bear with them as they are dramatically understaffed which can take a while for the orders to make it to the table but believe me it's worth the wait.

AMAZING brunch spot if you’re looking for something different that still has a breakfast feel to it. Flavorful, beautiful plating, well composed. I’m sad I live so far away because nothing in Tauranga compares to this!

Always so friendly. Coffee lovely and to the rim with heaps of cinnamon. Love the eggs n spinach , well presented. Very generous with the spinach. The touch of. Cheese on the scrambled eggs is so tasty

I sat outside, relaxed vibe and great service.. I had the fritters with a side of bacon.. really happy with my choice. Egg poached perfectly.. not a runny goobery white in sight! Good strong flat white too.

Istanbul Scramble was excellent. Coffee was great. I wish they would remove the "add tip?" feature from the EFTPOS machine. It is not part of NZ culture and it just sours the experience. It's pretty obvious it's awkward for the staff as well as the customer. Besides this one misstep, the food, coffee and service are all 5 star.

When we arrived the cafe was full but when the staff asked if we were ok sitting outside, once confirmed they pulled up seats and a table for us. Thanks for going the extra mile with your service. Great vegetarian option with the zucchini croquettes, the cilbir eggs were also very tasty. Great food and great service.

Must be the best brunch spot in the area. I can see why they are so busy, because their food is delicious!

Greeted by a very friendly front of house and beautiful decor. The fit out from honey bones is intentional and classy, from the hanging light over the shared table to the trim of the counter. Coffee was unmistakable. Ordered the 'full bones' and literally was licking the plate afterwards. An awesome rendition of a classic 'big breakfast'. Ultimately the best cafe experience in Auckland as of late

Quality coffee, delicious food and friendly service. Such a pleasing addition to the Grey Lynn area. I highly recommend.

Fantastic staff. Wonderful food from a tasty, inventive and inviting menu. Lovely dining room with cool, thoughtful design aesthetics and invitingly rustic flatware and water jugs. What more could you want or need?! Well done Honey Bones, love your work!

Sunday brunch is one of life's little gems. Wake up late on a Sunday, mosey on over to a cafe and wind in the afternoon with a spot of coffee and egg based delight.

Came here at 11am and there was a bit of a crowd waiting outside and for good reason. The food is good. Real good. You won't find a benny on this menu, but instead a brunch unlike anything else you've had. The merguez plate was awesome. Punchy flavours and just enough heat to wake you up. Coffee was strong and the service was faultless. Wait time to get a table was around 20min which is no fault of the place but something to keep in mind.

Such a busy spot at the weekends so you could end up with a wait
Its bit tight inside for seats too and can get cosy as people waiting for coffee or trying to get in which I didnt enjoy. Would be best to wrap up and chance outside seats IMO
Staff were helpful and friendly though the second I popped my cutlery down after my husband my plate was scooped up as I tried to clean my hands so that was little off putting
I really like the middle eastern twist on their lunch options overall so there is heaps to choose from though prob not for the food intolerant
It could do with being a tad budget friendly but the food was real good
My husband had the Turkish eggs which he loved it had ciabatta with a nice smear of the garlicky lanbenah topped with eggs, cauliflower and garnish . I had the halloumi bowl, this was really good ,loved the halloumi and the veggies etc could do with some.more lemon though as there is alot of oil to balance or some salt and pepper on the tables
Would like to come back and try some more options but deffo sit outside

Had been wanting to try this place for a while and it did not disappoint! We ordered a flat white, a chai, shared the West Lynn smoothie, and ordered the cilbir eggs and smashed pumpkin. The coffee was great and the chai wasn’t too sweet. The smoothie had a delicious chocolate, banana and peanut butter flavour and the presentation was beautiful. The pumpkin smash was creamy, rich and comforting while the cilbir eggs were more of a fresh taste, with the chilli oil and dill complementing the Greek yoghurt perfectly. Both portions were super generous and very filling. Will definitely be back to try other menu items!

They’ve changed their menu and it’s so uninspiring honestly disappointing

Cilbir eggs are simply superb!

Cosy cafĂŠ with beautiful interior decor. Friendly staff and great service. Honey bones is small, but has seating that spills out onto the footpath. Perfect for summer.
The granola I ordered was delicious, the perfect amount of sweet and sour (from the passionfruit). Beautifully presented. Will for sure be back to try more of the menu. Coffee was excellent also
Nicola
Amazing food! Simple dishes with the most stunning flavours that make it a stand out compared to other cafes

It is super busy when you want to go for breakfast/brunch on a Sunday. We ordered the Istanbul Scrambled, Halloumi Bowl and The Full Bones. This place is definitely one of those Instagram cafes! The Scrambled was so creamy and the cauliflower gave it that extra kick. The Halloumi Bowl was hella healthy for me but it was pretty good, the poached egg was runny and cooked to perfection. Every bit of The Full Bones was delicious! Wished they gave an extra or two of the hash ball 😋😋 9/10

The snuggliest cafe I’ve ever encountered! It’s got the greatest vibes with the place filled with buzzing customers. Came here on a Saturday morning, had to wait a while to be seated as it was so busy! Took us a while to be seated, and had to watch others who came after us be seated where we could’ve sat.

Once we were seated our orders were taken promptly. We received our coffee quickly, however the food took longer than we’d expected (give or take half an hour). I’m sure if we didn’t go at such a busy time it would’ve been much better!

All the food options on the menu looked delicious! It was even better as they were mostly vegetarian options! I ended up ordering the halloumi breakfast bowl, which had a generous portion! I thought the ratio of veggies to halloumi was slightly off though - but it still tasted great!

Service: 6/10
Ambiance: 8/10
Food: 7/10

This place is such a little gem. Very friendly staff. Good menu, great presentation. Had the Spanish sardines. They were tasty little fish and were great on the bread and with the poached egg.
Gourmet Vegetarians
Tucked away on Richmond Road, on first glance, Honey Bones doesn’t look like much more than another minimalist hipster cafe. Yet I’m going to go ahead and say that this unassuming joint is home to some of the BEST brunch dishes in all of Auckland.

The menu may be concise, yet it’s still hard to decide what to get here as every option sounds mouth-wateringly good. Everything on the menu is Middle Eastern inspired, which might explain why I love this place so much- Middle Eastern food is my all-time favorite.

On my first visit, I ordered was the smashed pumpkin on toast. Firstly- why have I never seen this on a menu before? Don’t get me wrong, I love smashed avo on toast as much as the next millennial, but seeing it one every single cafe menu gets pretty boring. I love that Honey Bones has decided to go against the status quo and smash a different veggie on toast. I never ever would have thought to top rye bread with fluffy whipped feta, smashed pumpkin, candied hazelnuts, crispy kale and Dukkah, but boy did it make for a fantastic flavor and texture combination. I literally cannot fault this dish, the flavours and textures were nothing short of perfection. 10/10

The next dish I tried on my intimate visit were the zesty zucchini fritters, which came with mint and pickled cucumber salad, lime labneh, paprika oil and a poached egg on top. To be honest, I was a little skeptical of ordering the dish as I find fritters to be so hit and miss. I’m so glad we did order them as they were absolutely flipping delicious! The fritters themselves were perfectly crisp on the outside and soft on the inside, and each individual element on the plate worked together to create a perfect balance of flavor. 9.5/10

On my next visit, I went with the scrambled eggs with feta, spiced cauliflower and labneh on Turkish pide. They pretty much had me at Turkish pide. The scrambled eggs were insanely silky and the added texture of the cauliflower and the flavour punch of the feta elevated this dish to a whole other level. The portion size was so generous I had to get my dad to help me polish it off! 8/10

I also tried some of my mum’s steel-cut bircher muesli. This was not your average bircher. Not only did it look like a work of art but it tasted like a work of art. I find bircher can be a bit gluggy but the steel-cut oats made for a really good texture. The coconut flavour was strong and the prevalence fruits and nuts added a new excitement to each bite. 8.5/10

Honestly, the food here is simply out of this world and I couldn’t recommend it more. This place really is the bees knees 🐝

Such a gorgeous little cafe on the corner in the west Lynn shops, amazing to get a seat outside in the sun. Good coffee and the food never disappoints the Smashed Pumpkin and Feta, The Cilbir Eggs and the Zucchini Fritters are a fav! Can be quite a wait for food especially when it’s busy but definitely worth it.

Dropped in here during a weekday morning. Service was ok. Steady stream of regulars were coming in to get coffee to go so that held up my order a bit. My coffee was very nice. Ordered the pancake, and while it was nice, it really needed maybe some maple syrup and/or more berry coulis to balance out the dryness a bit more. Aside from that I left a happy camper.

Honey Bones was a gem in Grey Lynn

Service: Very friendly and fast.

Ambience: Nice atmosphere with good lighting. The store was quite busy but my friends and I didn’t have to wait very long.

Food: I got the chilli labneh eggs with sourdough. The bread goes perfectly with the whipped feta and tomato sauce. My friends got the zucchini fritters with poached eggs and pickled cucumber which was also amazing.

Definitely want to come back to try more food.

First time trying this place out. Ordered the smashed pumpkin - a lot of flavour it was really nice.
Portion was a little small for the price but your paying for the area.

I’d happily try something else from the menu on my next visit.
The food here is so wholesome and vibrant. You can tell the ingredients are fresh and the poached eggs are absolutely on point.

The portion sizes are decent and the prices are reasonable for the quality food you are served.
Cheap Cheap Foodie
Food and beverages ordered: zesty zuchinni fritters, smashed pumpkins and coffee.

Environment: uptown and trendy

Services: very friendly

Costs: $25 per person on average

Will I return: yes and I have

Comment: This place is super busy during the weekends. Best seat on the house is the window bar table overlooking Richmond road. Coffee is a good 4.5 out of 5. Not a big fan of vegetarian dishes but my oh my, the smashed pumpkin real did smashed my taste buds in. The crisp and sharp kale are absolutely stunning and fully complement the hearty pumpkin. Its a must try.

Good food, but customer service was a little lacking unfortunately when it came to getting a table. Ignored by one of the waitstaff when I went to ask if there was space, and then shifted from a seemingly free table so another group that already had a table could sit there, without being offered anywhere else to sit. Had to ask if we could sit where the other group moved from which was strange. Food took about 45 minutes to arrive. I don’t mind a wait, but it’s nice to be told about it when you order. We finished our coffees well before the food, and the second coffee my friend ordered never arrived, luckily this wasn’t on the bill.

Food was fresh and flavoursome. Staff didn’t rush me despite my indecisiveness. My wife and I both had a fantastic meal without spending a fortune. The smoothie was tasty as well. Will definitely return!

Best coffee I’ve had in Auckland! Amazing food and really good service. Definitely my new favourite cafe in Auckland. Would highly recommend!
Husk Creative
Husk visited a new local eatery - Honey Bones, a small cafe tucked in the Grey Lynn side of town, thanks to some decent props from Denizen. We approve of the minimal interior featuring steel framework and a trendy wooden menu board filled with more than your average brunch breakfast and lunch. From 'Cured Salmon' with whipped feta, and pistou to 'Beef Cheek Croquettes', this menu is no short of inviting. The range of cold drinks went down a treat. We were especially ecstatic about the range of smoothies, with those 'hipster' ingredients such as kale, cacao and chia seeds. We're looking forward to bringing the rest of the huskies along for the next round.
Check out our individual food reviews here: husk.co.nz/lunches/honey-bones

“No Skeletons in the closet”
Wednesday Lunch meeting friends we haven’t seen for a while. ‘We must go to my favourite place’ was announced and so we google mapped, hopped in the car and after fighting our way over the roadworks directly outside the door we were seated and ready to see what the fuss was about.
Cute little corner cafe opposite Gypsy Tea room. Located in the middle of the other edgy ‘soho-esqe’ bohemian establishments that throw out vibrant personality and shimmering finesse.
Honey Bones has found itself right at home and fits in perfectly.
We had the
- breakfast bowl with salmon - 8/10
-smoked mackerel on toast - 7/10
- 2 x Croque Monsieur - 11/10
The coffee was executed perfectly. A good crema, well balanced with a bitter/sweet toasted finish nodding towards 100% dark cocoa and served hot.
The fabulous fare was served timely, presented beautifully, served unitedly and with a wonderful smile.
Our table was attended to, the water jug replenished and our crockery removed from sight within minutes of finishing the final morsels of deliciousness.
If you’re in the hood and haven’t checked out the new kid on the block I urge you to make the journey.
Though a trip around the building site to land at your destination might seem a struggle in today’s age of door to door Uber convenience, be assured - it’s truly worth it.

Cute little cafe. Not a lot of seating/some shared seating so might be trickier for larger groups. Great coffee and interesting menu - we all enjoyed what we ordered. Service was friendly and efficient!

A lot of car parks, relatively spacious but very busy. Very good and fast services. Food was unique and portion size was good. Would recommend if in the area.

I heard about Honey Bones after an online review and decided to come check out with a friend for brunch this morning. Very much your typical Westlynn niche kind of cafe, but enjoyed it nonetheless. Seating is limited and it was very busy (clad with your typical trendy "we want to use the coolest, but uncomfiest seating available"). We both got soy flat whites which were ok. I had the buckwheat and plum porridge, and my friend had scrambled eggs on ciabatta. The porridge was yum but very sweet, and got sickly quite quickly. Nevertheless very pleasing to the eye and instagram worthy. The eggs on toast were nice apparently. The rest of the menu looked really yum (albeit expensive). I would come back, but probably not at peak hour Sunday 10am, and not on a budget (or with a sore back)
