Nice fresh fish n chips served in a cardboard box for dine in patrons. Only drinks were fancy sodas and no regular ones. No salad in our boxes but the slaw was yummy. Felt the price was a little high for just one piece but guess that is the area. Only concern really was a lack of rubbish bins other than the council ones out the front. Other than that it would have been 5 stars.

If you’re not a big eater, I’d highly recommend sharing the meal with a friend and maybe ordering some extra sides to nibble on.
The battered oysters and crab sticks are both delicious options. As is the smokey(?) aioli (the white coloured one).

Meal and a fish burger.. and they are so yummy! My son loves the crispy crumbed salmon, he prefers mine and he ate half of my fish 😅 comes with fresh greens and large portion of chips.. wish you can get more of the sauce, as it is just too small for a supper meal.. But definitely will come back!

This is defz a lil gem n I lurrrrrrv the Red hotdogs, it's a Wellington thang 🥰, the fish is amazing with a crunchy batter, not too thick either, I tried their Indian patty and I would defz get that again, the chips were great the first time we got them however the 2nd time around not as great as the first time however could be coz we got there towards closing time. Burgers were a hit with my famz, I'm based on the Shore n this is defz our new spot for fishNChips. Good size portions, batter is enough n crunchy. It's defz a bit pricey however defz worth it. We usually go to several different fishNchips places for chips, fish, Patty's etc however this spot is a 8/10 from my famz only coz we haven't tried everything from the menu ... yet 😉😁✌️. Defz try them out if you can ✌️.

As a Kiwi bloke, from time to time I just have to have Fush & Chups - and this is my Go To place when I'm over Herne Bay way. They have an excellent range of fresh fish that you can have battered or crumbed, other deep fried goodies, potatoe or kumera chips and Bluff Oysters when they are in season.
The cooks running the fresh & clean cooking area really know what they are doing and you are welcome to eat-in or takeout.
If you are looking for a modern version of our traditional F&Cs then you will enjoy your visit here. 😊

Hi, does Scott stil own this operation ? Since its inception it was fantastic but both times Ive returned to AKL in the last fortnight our orders have been markedly dissapointing. Snapper battered was again over cooked (not golden, not light brown, but dark, but dark, dark brown) which means its was overcooked.
As a chef I appreciate how to cook fish and you have done so well for so long, but the snapper in our battered fish was nothing like the snapper in your display cabinet, yesterdays snaper was yellowing (under the burnt batter), I wouldnt eat it and after a 20 minute meeting I went onto, I came back to the car to a decidedly horrible smell. Not fresh fish.
Last night we spent $25.50 for 2 of us. We also ordered and paid for tartare sauce, picked up our order, walked to our car only to find no tartate sauce had been supplied, and back we went. I asked the guy (yesterday afternoon) if Scott was still the owner and manager, and he actually coudnt understand what I was saying (Asian). There are subtle (cardboard new price list pinned over the top of the first class one that was prefioulsy there) and large changes (quality) at Fishsmith and this usually means a change in ownership where the new owner is not interested in maintaining good will nor standards. Just had the worst snapper and calamari, always loved the food here but tonight was appalling - the snapper was chargrilled dry and the crispy squid rubbery and inedible. Such a popular take away joint and a pity that this has happened. Chips were great thank you.

Hyper salty Southern Fried Prawns, chips full of over fried, greasy odds and ends and a vegetarian bean cake thing that was partly covered in oily batter and not a lot of flavour.
Overall impression ... a growling stomach and burping up the flavour of old oil all night.

When staying in the Auckland CBD w/ a car or someone who drives, this little fish and chip shop is worth going the short distance -- possibly the best F&C in the City if not the Greater Auckland area.
There's a good choice of fresh fish and they do offer $16 suppers fish, calamari or for veggies, even checkpea bites w/ fries and homemade slaw. Also, a softshell crab sandwich on a bun for $12.
Worth a sit out and a wander around this Herne Bay 'hood on Jervois Road. Or make it takeaway if you have somewhere to go rather than back to a hotel room.

Just smashed a fish roll from you guys with a side of the twice cooked chips. Not only was my order prepared extremely fast but the food itself was amazing. I was a customer. I had the worst experience ever. Rude staff and overly expensive. Complained to manager, who at first wasn't interested... then had a stand up argument with him in the street.... I was a customer who complained about the value... go figure. And then the next day an argument with the owner about the value for money. Go figure. I don't think that I'll be going back. There is a better place just up the road.

This was my first time at this tale-away shop. I actually didn't order fish & chips but tacos instead and the food didn't let me down even just for one second. The tacos and kumara chips are just best of best. For a very affordable price with a big portion I bet nowhere else in Auckland can beat this place. The fish and prawns are also super super fresh too. This is definitely one of my favorite food places from now on.

I was not that into fish'n'chips but this one really surprised me. Fish was fresh and fried perfectly. Nothing to complain about the fish. Salmon's super juicy and rich! Highly recommended. <br/><br/>But I was not satisfied with the kumara chips 'cause some of the kumara were rotten by worms and appear spicy and unpleasant flavor. I wish that they have chosen kumara carefully and prepare them in a more sophisticated way!

Really cool spot in Herne Bay! Fish was very fresh and juicy, slaw had a nice bite to it and I enjoyed the dressing on it too. You get a lot of food when you order the supper so make sure you’re really hungry or split it with a friend. Staff were friendly and food came out quick. Would come back again to try out other menu items!

17/01/2019 - Good quality fish and chips. Fish came out super crunchy I recommend getting it crumbed for extra crunch. Grilled is another option for those who want less coating. Paua fritters are amazing - a very fair portion of Paua meat inside. Bought 2 more to takeaway yesterday. Calamari was good; had this very aromatic taste. Service was good. Would go again! :). Quite popular location as per number of customers enjoying meals after a hard days work. Nice sign and set up; for a small establishment. Thanks for the meal!

The staff were nice and friendly, a few seats inside and out to sit but who rarely doesnt take away their fish and chips!<br/>Got battered and bread crumbed fish both were very nice and still juicy inside!<br/>The kumara chips were good too! Came here for dinner. The place feels traditional. It’s the type of fish and chips you remember fondly years ago. They cook their fish and chips well. It isn’t the best in Auckland, however they do a decent enough job. My favourite thing I ordered was their scollops. The tacos weren’t too bad. I was hoping for a really good salsa, however that’s not the case. Otherwise this is a good option in Auckland for fish and chips.

Our very first meal in New Zealand was good old ‘Fush and Chups’. Auckland is surrounded by water, in-between and all around so you can literally find fresh fish anywhere, and at any time. <br/><br/>Out of all the takeaway spots we've tried though for fish and chips, FishSmith never disappoints. This weekend we branched out and tried their battered fish tacos with coleslaw and hot sauce - one of the most simple and delicious meals I've had all year!<br/><br/>They get really busy in peak periods, so do not be put off if they do not answer their phones.

Delicious fish n chips! Ordered online beforehand on a Friday night and lucky that we did as when we got there, the place was packed with people waiting to order. Was able to pick up my food straight away with no wait time. I got simple crumbed fish and chips and it was so yummy! Not greasy like usual fish n chips. Keen to go back and try the fish tacos which looked so yum!

Its not the typical 'fish and chips' for its greasy overcooked fries and oily battered fish. This takeaway shop does it perfectly! Nicely cooked fish with a selection to choose from such as snapper, fish of the day, salmon etc. They also give you a choice between battered or breaded. We chose the breaded fish...omg soo divine! They also have a choice between potato or kumara chips. We chose kumara. The best thing ever. Nicely cooked and not oily with the right amount of salt to give it flavour. Perfect. <br/>Must try! Takeaway it and head to herne bay beach 😊

Just had to give my fish dinner from Fishsmith to the dog, it was so greasy and disgusting. For a premium priced joint this is a joke; been before and it was ok but obviously they have just decided they don't give a toss anymore and have a captive Herne Bay market. The fish was just soggy lumps of fat and once piece smelt whiffy… eck. Avoid.

The best fish and chip place I have ever been to, and yes I have been to a fair few. We have been here so many times over the years that the staff now recognize us! The fish is always fresh and cooked perfectly. The hand cut chips are just the best. The menu is small, but well done. We always opt for one of the supper meals which comes with chips and salad. The salads are always fresh and well dressed. The portion sizes are actually very filling.<br/>The service is always great. Wait time isn't very long and meals always taste great. It's a tiny place, mostly for take away I suppose, but it's definitely got a cafe style feel inside as opposed to a grungy take away shop.

Thought it was time for something fancy, so mum and I came here while waiting for dad to finish work one time. Instead of buying the classic fish n chips, we decided to get Kumara Chips instead. The natural sweetness of the kumara in fried was one of the best things I've ever eaten. Tops some of that with some Aioli sauce and you can never go wrong.<br/><br/>The service was great, the person who served us was really kind and friendly and it did take quite a while to cook. But my only assumption was that 'good things take time'.<br/><br/>It sort of has that cafe-like feel when you enter the shop, look north-east of the shop from the entrance and you see the fryer. The dining area is mainly outside, which is great for a nice summers day.

This place does truly amazing fish and chips!!! We had battered snapper and chips with their tartare sauce!!<br/>The batter is crisp and light and their fish is incredibly fresh. They serve well sized fillets. <br/>The chips are twice fried and are truely delicious!!<br/>The fish is served in boxes to prevent steaming and keep it fresh. Comes with lemon slices and the right amount of salt!

Best fish and chips I've had. Succulent fresh fish inside a brioche style long roll that was flaky paired with a fresh and light coleslaw. I don't really like coleslaw but this was an exception. <br/><br/>Chips tasted like twice cooked Agria thick cut, an aioli with pickle in it would be so good as a match. <br/><br/>Overall, top food!

We ordered here on a Saturday night and booked via the website which was really easy. We got gluten free battered terahiki, regular battered terahiki, chips and slaw. Altogether it cost $30. Both of our fishes were really nice, as was the slaw and the tartare sauce. However the chips were really average and not worth the price. We paid $6 for a large portion which wasn't very big, and they were pretty bland and soggy. Overall pretty good and we would come back

Calamari was dry and was a struggle to eat. The battered and crumbed fish of the day was nice. <br/>This is more of a takeaway shop, eating area was minimal and really, really cold!

Took 50 minutes for a takeaway order and they got the order wrong. Not impressed by the service but the food was good. Even though half of it was missing. I explained over the phone at least five times so can't believe they still managed to get it wrong.

First time to visit there this afternoon. A small but very tidy and clean shop with great music. Ordered one Snapper and one today's fish for $13.50 in total. Snapper was really tasty, crispy outside and juicy inside.

After reading sooooo many good reviews, drove all the way there to try these 'amazing' fish and chips with high hopes. Quite disappointed! Ordered 2 pcs of snapper, chips, and half dozen calamari. Calamari was dry and tough, and chips are just plain normal (too dry for my liking). Fish is good though, nothing to complaint there.

Both were good, although if I was being really pedantic, the calamari was a tiny bit chewy. <br/><br/>I did manage to demolish the calamari on the drive home though...<br/><br/>Staff were nice too. 4/5.<br/><br/>

Don't know if I'll be going anywhere else for fish & chips after this. $16 for two fish tacos + chips, $6 for 6 pieces of crispy calamari, $16 for the BF's battered fish, chips, sauce + salad. More food than we could finish, which says a lot. Really busy when we got there but only waited 10 minutes at the most 👌🏻

Fish smith is always my go to for takeaways as it's just up the road and always good. But this time was just wrong & im not sure I'll be back. First I booked online because I knew being a Friday evening it would be busy & I didn't want to hang around waiting. I ordered calamari and the fish tacos, which I hadn't tried before. It said it would take 40 minutes which should be plenty of time for the busy Friday. I ended up having to wait an additional 20 minutes there, with no apology at all. Getting back home I bit into one of my tacos and something was not right. It was hard and chewy and also It also appears to be black and uncooked, not quite sure what fish is even being used but it's definitely not white. The calamari was spot on as always, but this is so gross. Im so confused.

Pretty bloody good f&c w jus a twist of fancy cause we are in herne bay let me remind u. I've had the bun w tartare sauce which was fiyah but this time went for supper spicy tacos w side of chips and supper size calamari w coleslaw. Shared between 2 in case u thinking I'm hungus af. The tacos (although not that spicy) are 100. Also v solid coleslaw, better than ur average slop. However calamari (described as crispy) was not. This might have been down to the long ass wait we had where it verged on, dare I say it, soggy. Also if we were on MasterChef Nz, al would be giving a bloody bollocking for over saltiness. Now, I am a big fan of calamari so this was a tad disappointing. However, would get the spicy mayo dip option again. At the end of the day, u can't go too awry w this classic kiwi tucker, so u will catch of the day me back here eh

Best fish and chips I've probably ever had. They aren't cheap but they do not cut on quality. The fish was beautiful with a lovely crisp batter. The oysters were delicious and the chips were crispy. Loved the crunchy peices of batter floating around in the pack. Will be back again. Cheers.

Excellent fish and chips. We choose the crumbed snapper which was delicious, big juicy pieces (which you would expect for $8). The calamari and oysters were also excellent. Efficient friendly service even on a busy Sunday night. Not the cheapest f&c in town but definitely one of the best.

So many places get fish and chips wrong and I've become pretty despondent that anyone can still actually produce the goods, but Fish Smith restored my faith that great fish and chips are still out there! A slight step up from the usual take on a Kiwi favorite with great prices for fantastic food. They also have some terrific specials. I had salmon skewers once which were sooo good.

As good as fish and chips get, clean, modern premises and fresh ingredients. We ordered crumbed fish with spud fries and slaw, everything was crunchy and their generous selection of sauces accompany the meals well. The food is reasonably priced and 2 mains took a mere 10 minutes to prepare. Highly recommend for a healthier alternative to the usual greasy takeaways on offer.

Crumbed fish, paua fritters, pickled mussels and two fish suppers (crumbed fish, slaw, hand cut chips, and one sauce)...the verdict: fish tasted fresh, crumbed batter was not thick, just enough hand cut chips so no wastage and a crunchy and tasty slaw - not just cabbage, carrot and sloppy oily dressing that other places tend to serve; hubby had the fritters and he was pleased with them. Fish Smith you could well be out not so local chippery! ! The drive out in my opinion was worth it. 4.5 only coz we don't have you out West ?

You better believe it. I don't like traveling far unless it's worth it. Definitely the freshest fish and the hand cut fries are a must. Have tried almost everything on the menu in the 5 or so visit and now it gets difficult to choose coz everything is so good. <br/><br/>The drinks are a bit different too. Highly recommend a visit on a good day.

Oooo the fish, so soft, so fresh. And the love from the friends over the counter just makes you want to keep going back. There are a variety of things on their menu and I have never been disappointed when I try something other than chips with my fish. <br/>It's rather cool that they use an iPad as their counter computer! ?<br/><br/>

This is the modern reincarnation of the traditional fish and chip shop... super clean, funky interior, quick service with faultless fresh and tasty fish and chip takeaways, what more could one want? They also have a couple of flash looking and healthy salads to choose from, and I had fish tacos which were fabulous. Always very popular for locals, (apparently also a singles pickup hotspot from what I have been told :-) and now taken over from the Fish Monger as my favourite fish & chip shop in the locale...!

After a sunny day like today, it really started to feel like summer so the only option for dinner was fish n chips! We decided to head to Herne Bay and try out Fish Smith.<br/><br/>I am usually not a fan of fish and chips as I tend to feel quite yuck afterwards but this was completely different. We went in and the first thing we noticed was how immaculate the place was and how friendly the staff are! <br/><br/>I ordered the chickpea bites supper, the bf ordered the battered fish supper and we shared the crumbed haloumi. The chickpea bites were spicy and came with a massive vege and quinoa salad. The haloumi was delicious, very big chunks and fries perfectly. Probably not the healthiest thing on the menu but would definitely order again! <br/><br/>Bf said the fish was amazing, amongst the best he ever had. They had multiple sauce options for his chips and he opted for the salt and vinegar mayo, absolutely moreish. The chips looked handcut and still had the skins on. <br/><br/>Fish Smith is easily the best fish n chip shop I've been to. It's a bit pricey, but totally worth it for the quality. Nice to have a takeaway option that isn't too greasy and it's in the perfect location to head down to the waterfront and enjoy on the wharf.

Beautiful fresh fish filleted daily and you can tell. The fried food tastes clean & not fatty, the salads are fresh and tasty, & mayonnaise and dressings all seem to be made onsite too. You can tell there is care put into what is created here even if it is just a fish & chips shop.<br/><br/>Have returned several times & will continue to do so.<br/><br/>Good on these guys for creating quality food that people want, not the same run of the mill fried food.

Had to make a MenuMania account just to say that this new place is awesome! Best cheap fish and chips I've had in Auckland, and the salt and vinegar mayo is genius. All the good kaimoana available including paua fritters, oysters, mussels, calamari etc etc. make this your new fatty Friday spot (it ain't even that fatty)
