Review Bian Sushi & Donburi - Auckland Central

Yan
Teriyaki beef donburi here is awesome, as are the katsu curry donburi. Delicious sushi too. They also have the most tasty mayo onion and herb sauce I've ever tried - it's beside the self service wasabi/sauces. Free self-service green tea if you are dining in :)

Food was great. Spicy chicken and salmon donburi are must try. Udon soup was great and spicy chicken on the sides was tender and cooked to perfection.

Some interesting options of 🍣 sushi. What I really like about the place is you can pick and choose, so you literally have 6 pieces of sushi and all of them can be different. I would definitely like to add a note on the wasabi, that stuff is really strong, compared to a whole bunch I have had in Auckland. All on all definitely a must-try place for sushi

Was at a birthday party and they ordered Bian sushi! The rice was really really nice. Really enjoyed it! We finished it like it was nothing! Yum nom nom

Every time I want to eat sushi, I always come to this place. Very delicious, variety of sushi to choose from. Their Katsu curries are also yummy !

AMAZING SUSHI! Friendly and helpful staff as well. I would rate with 6 (or more) stars if I could.

Fantastic bento boxes & the sushi looked good too. Will definitely return!

Definitely a good place for gimbap and sushi.

My go to for lunch after work. They serve some good and filling sushi rolls. Sushi is always a delight to eat.

Came here for lunch. We usually go to a different place closer to town for our sushi fix, but decided to try something different this time. Bian Sushi reminded me what proper good sushi should taste like! They had a good variety of rolls for a decent price - my plate full ran me about $15 while my partner's salmon salad and sushi rolls was a bit more at $18. Self serve with the toppings and a variety of sauces, which is nice - I don't often see that anymore. It's not a huge place and it's quite busy but if you want a good meal at a decent price give it a try!

Best sushi in the area. Great spot for a quick lunch. Easy to grab and go. I love their variety of sushi and dumplings. Highly recommend the fried oyster roll. Also a good variety of vegetarian rolls - pumpkin and gobo/carrot are my favorites.

My favorite sushi takeaway in town!

I have been going here for about 15 years, they are still my favourite japanese resturant ever! The staff are so lovely and go above and beyond, we order for staff lunches and they deliver to us for free, always on time, all of our staff always love their meals. Every dish on their menu is authentic and delish, thank you Allan for your amazing service, you will always be our only choice for Japanese staff lunch 🙌🤤🍲🍙🍤🍥

Always 5 star fresh and tasty

Lovely wee spot. Popped in for a late lunch, food was delish, the full size was too much for me, next time I'll try the half size meals. Glad to see they do sushi platters which my kids love.

We stumbled upon Bian by accident, and I'm glad we did. Inside was a variety of sushi, donburi, and sashimi. I had crispy teriyaki chicken and teriyaki chicken. The rice was incredibly fresh and you could tell it was recently cooked. My favourite was the crispy sushi. The price was very reasonable, the setting was comfortable and the staff were very helpful.

The food is not bad here but the star rating was really for confusing menu and staff.

I ordered the spicy fried chicken don. As the photo shows I got rice with fried chicken (and a couple slices of capsicum). To be honest the fried chicken was nice and crispy, but, there is ZERO spice! No chili sauce or powder, seriously it's just an ordinary fried chicken don.
I was convinced they forgot to add chili so I ask the staff and she assured me this is the way it was meant to be. I said but there is no chilli so it's not really spicy fried chicken (genuinely confused here) and she progress to give me a bottle of chilli powder and said "here you go you can add this".
I ended up giving up and got myself some tartar sauce (which was actually very nice) from the self serve table and had tartar sauce fried chicken don instead!

To this day I am still very confused at what the difference is between fried chicken don and spicy fried chicken don.

Pretty good sushi restaurant for take away. I used tp came here a lot coz i live across the street. Curry pork donburi is pretty yum. Service always nice and friendly

Bian sushi is a cosy sushi spot located on Symonds Street. They have a wide variety of donburi and sets to choose from. Their sushi doesn't have as much variety as say, Umi sushi on in Elliot Food court but I would say that Brian's tastes a lot better. The best part is being able to add your own sauce after picking your sushi.

I got a salmon salad with a side of tamago, teriyaki salmon nigiri and a Californian roll with marinated carrots. The salad was generous with the portion of salmon, as it should be because it was a little pricey. The sushi itself was very good, full of flavour and you can taste the freshness of the ingredients. My partner ordered an array of their sushi and agrees that it is worth every penny.

Service was great and the environment was clean as well Definitely coming back here again.

A work colleague bought in dinner made from here. Ordered a Salmon Donburi on brown rice + seaweed salad. The seaweed salad was refreshing. I feel however the Donburi was a letdown esp given the price as to the salmon to rice ratio. Disappointed with the end product. Would recommend or return.

Pretty sure I saw Lorde here once having a feed and a yarn to some nz Radio DJ, can't verify that though. Anyway, this place is definitely worth the money with tasty sushi and udon noodles. Have tried most items on their menu and their Katsu Don curry was is ok but not amazing. Their special mayonnaise based sauce takes the icing on the cake and makes everything tastier. A 5 star rating for value for money and taste! Would recommend!

I was a bit disappointed about this place. Had a pork donburi, a dumpling and a tempura udon. The donburi was supersalty and the pork was soggy.

Besides that, I only had the dumpling cos I called the waitress and asked for it again. They simply forgot my order although they were totally empty.

Came with a friend for lunch and had a hard time making choices coz the sushi all looked so cute and yummy!
I love the grilled egg roll the most because it was well seasoned and the visual was awesome. The roll with oyster was also yum.
Little bit disappointed about the seared beef nigiri as the beef was way too chewy and took me ages to swallow it down.
The tempura prawn was not that crispy probably because it had been sit there for a while

Late review- been there 2 weeks ago

I'm not quite sure how they got voted 'Best Sushi’ by Metro and Viva but to me-- an Asian sushi fan, their sushi is below average. I noticed that the majority of customers walking in the door that day were non-Asian so that's probably how they earned the name of 'Best Sushi'. If a Japanese sushi chef comes to this place he would be crying.
The rice of the Sushi and Donburi was hard because they didn't use sushi rice. The chicken meat was very dry and beef was chewy and tasteless. My sister ordered a chicken salad and the dressing was packed with sugar.
Overall, the experience was disappointed and we're very unlikely to come back again. To be honest,
I'd rather go to a cheap sushi place in East Tamaki where you can get comparable quality sushi but at a lower price.

A time wasters. I went to pick up delivery for a customer. He uses his own courier. An ugly attitude owner to deal with. Avoid because he lies 😠😠😠😠

Hands down this IS the best place to get sushi in Auckland. The staff are always friendly and the sushi is always fresh and so tasty.

I also enjoy the donburi and udon noodles when I dine in.

Seeing they were voted best sushi by metro and viva in the past it was tempting to give their sushi a try! But being a cold day we wanted something warm and comforting. We ordered the katsu chicken donburi and the teriyaki tofu donburi with a side of salad each to takeaway. The portions were really decent and we could've got away with the smaller size for lunch.

Both donburis were good, even though it took us 20mins to get home and eat them. The katsu chicken was really tender and well crumbed. There was a generous amount of tofu and it was well flavoured with plenty of sauce on the rice. Only downside to both dishes is they don't come with salad or veggies.

The service is friendly and quick. The restaurant is pretty simple but ideal for this type of food. The rows of self serve sushi looked very appealing and they have a big selection to choose from - using different ingredients than your standard. Will definitely give their sushi a go next time!

I have been here a few times and don't think that my experiences justify Bian's claim it is the best sushi in Auckland.

The prices seem to be on the high side especially compared with other outlets. There is just nothing special about the sushi here. They seem to be milking their reputation to get higher prices.

I felt you have to spend a lot of money to get a full feed.

The ambiance is not great either. It is cramped and the door constantly gets slammed which is annoying when you just want to eat.

The staff give average service and it is nothing huge to complain about.

Overall, I feel that Bien sushi is bette than Bian sushi.

Great tasting food. Never tried the sushi but it looked incredible! On my lunch break so the quick service was much appreciated but thought it was a little expensive for the area ($21 for mixed tempura (all veg & 1 prawn) with teriyaki chicken donburi). Chinese on the corner does all you can eat for $10 so maybe I'm just being cheap 🙊

im not gonna lie, my go to sushi is mercury plaza but today the tables turned and my friends took me here, they swore by it.

im a classic sushi gal you know, i like a few things in me sushi. avocado and salmon is my favourite. i like prawn nigiri, avo nigiri and seaweed salad.

so thats what i got cause it was on offer. m88888 the salmon pieces were huge, im telling ya its no sushi of the day at st pierres. bloody quality. $1.40 per piece is pretty steep but i was willing to pay as there was more ingredients than rice.

theyre ratios are bloody 10/10 folks.

also you get to grab YOUR OWN wasabi and ginger which is great cause too many places bloody stinge out and you dont have enough condiments.

ALSO THEY HAD so many different condiments which i loved. i wanted to keep it O.G so i just got soy, ginger and wasabi. but my friends got this white sauce that tasted like ... a mix between big mac sauce and tartare and m8 its fiyyyyaaahh and i ate heaps of theirs. infact i might go here next time im making burgers and ask for some sauce cause that would be dope

im not a local to this area but if im in area and want sushi i will return.

Introduced to this place today by a work colleague as I've just started a new job. Have had horrible sushi in the past and so thought I wasn't really into sushi until trying the sushi here. I'm a convert! I'll be back for more - loved the pumpkin, oyster and pork sushi. Delicious!

Great Japanese food albeit slightly expensive.

The seafood & vegetable tempura udon tasted amazing but they only give you 2 pieces of seafood which I find a bit of a rip off as there's several more pieces of vegetables.

The lady was nice enough to substitute the tuna in my sashimi for more salmon (as I can't eat raw tuna) and aside from presentation, utter perfection in a little dish. Highly recommend this!

The kaarage chicken was moist and crunchy and an ok portion size for the price. Would recommend for chicken lovers. Could do with a bit of spice though (which is available as chilli flakes on the table).

The lady at the counter is super sweet, very friendly and helpful.

Sarah Reynolds #challenge

I mainly go for the counter sushi here, and its my favorite hands down. The creative options and freshness set it apart from every other takeaway sushi joint. And my god try the white sauce.

Great fresh sushi and a good selection!! Have been a few times for lunch - a popular place so sometimes not everything is available. Have only had the choose your own sushi - not ordered from the menu.

He said - Salmon is fresh and tasty

She said - great selection and I like that you can choose individual pieces

I live and work locally to Bian, and can't even count how many times I have been there over the last 3 years. I have found them to always be polite and friendly, and the sushi fresh and yummy. We order work sushi platters for our clients and always get rave reviews!!!! Only twice have I ordered from the menu (cause I can't seem to resist the tasty sushi) and had the chicken katsu. Very tasty!

Best sushi in Auckland and excellent value for money. The highlights for me are the spicy chicken roll, the tuna roll , pumpkin and the potato balls. All the ginger you can manage and really nice mayonaise as well.

The sushi was really delicious and fresh. I especially enjoyed the variety and wonderful combinations of ingredients fresh and cooked. The premises are clean and well presented. I really liked that the sushi was reasonably priced and the staff was friendly. Also you get free filtered water. :D

Best I've ever had! The sushi were fresh, vibrant, tasty even though on a little high side for the price, but well worth the quality! Because they are so easy, most of their sushi flies away and they continuously make fresh ones to restock. Love the home made white sauce! Absolutely delicious! There is a reason this shop has been around for years on Symond St while others had closed down. Will definitely be back again!

Best sushi, great Bento box, great sashimi. Wonderful Japanese food. It would have an excellent rating but memumania wanted more than 200 words for that rating.
Tommy Coleman
I ordered some kind of egg and rice dish, it tasted ok. The reason I gave this place a 1 out of 5 is that the service was horrible! I ordered the food, sat down, and the food was literally thrown at me. What was she thinking? That was just uncalled for and I have not been back since and will probably never go back. She didn't even give me any acknowledgement as she handed me the food, she just looked away, chucked it at me, and moved on.

What a disgrace to the art and quality of Japanese cuisine.
Chloë Leonarda
Hands down best sushi in Auckland, yum. Also a very intimate and friendly environment especially around dinner time when the lunch crowd has died down. Love how there's help yourself condiments and green tea.

I work across the road and would eat there once a week for lunch.

The Sushi always seems fresh and freshly made for the lunchtime trade. On most days there is a queue but the service is quick and efficient. My favorite would be the smoked eel.

It is not cheap but it would be hard to find better Sushi.
Dani
I have no idea what 'Doria' who wrote the review prior to mine is on about, this sushi place is THE BEST sushi place that I have ever been to. Infact, ever since I found it I have been going there at least 3 nights a week for dinner. I have never been to a sushi place where the sushi tasted as fresh as this - especially the salmon and avocado. Their miso soup is the best I have tried and their spicy chicken don is amazing (though yes, it doesn't have veges). I would also recommend the chicken katsu curry =)
Ota Cat
The restaurant is horrible and I have no idea how it got to the pages in Metro in the first place. The sushi meat seems old every time I go there and they don't seem make traditional nor professional sushi. Their sushi rice was grabbed too firmly, so it kind of feels like you're eating some badly cut fish on rice cake instead of sushi not to mention how their deep fried food were all soggy after 4ish. The don was the most pathetic don I have ever had in Auckland where there was hardly any trace of fresh vegetables, just some teriyaki sauce and meat on top of rice that seems like it wasn't cooked for the purpose of a don. All and all I'd rather go to banzai which is close by.
