Yummy food. I had their fish box deal. The salad, chips and fish were yum. The fish not heavily battered. A bonus for me is as I have a shellfish allergy it is difficult to find a place which agreed to not use the same oil as shellfish. It obviously worked because I am alive. Thanks guys :)

Really nice fish and chips with big thick chips. Prices for food is expensive unless you get a combo and then it is an okay price. The sushi was not good but it could of been because we came later in the day. Staff polite but not very welcoming or friendly and it was empty when we came. Only fish in chip place in the area through so that's what you get. Would come again to get food in in area.

Was craving fish and chips on a Sunday night. John Dory had a good combo deal for $11, and $12.50 for Tarakihi. The service was great, we weren't kept waiting around for too long before we were served a good portion size of delicious fresh fish and chips. The salad that came with it was a bonus too! Thank you for satisfying our cravings. Will have to return again soon!

Great veggie burger, awesome value and largest serving experienced in Auckland so far. Great Chinese salad dressing too.
Make sure you get your order in at least 20 minutes before they close, sometimes longer on busy nights. Won't take orders up until close.

We came all the way from the north shore to try this place and it did not disappoint! Hands down the best fish and chips we have had and the beef burger was insanely good. Fresh crispy fish, amazing fries and the best home made tartare sauce ever. Would recommend this place to everyone and will 100% be returning.

We dined here on a friday night after work and while the food was delicious the service was rude.<br/><br/>We ordered and decided to dine in sitting outside, we asked for our table to be clean as it was filthy so the server came out and wiped up. <br/><br/>While other diners left and had their tables cleared of rubbish we were still eating not realising the time being 8.45.<br/><br/>Instead of coming out and politely letting us know it was closing time the just turned off the lights and started moving in furniture.<br/><br/>So we started clearing up and getting ready to go when the man literally just picked up the other chairs as soon as we stood up.<br/><br/>So we tried to clear up and asked if we could put our rubbish from the food we ate in their bins.<br/><br/>The guy owner looks at us like were were stupid and says " We are a takeaway not a rubbish dump " we tried to ask again saying "but we ate from here"<br/><br/>He then proceeded to say it again and then told us to take the rubbish with us and find the public bins.<br/><br/>No one else was treated like this, I did realise however we were the only brown people in the place in an area where I dont see many people our colour.<br/><br/>The whole experience made us feel disgusted and like we were trash.<br/><br/>I will never ever come back here after feeling like this.

$10 fish & chips special with their yummy coleslaw is a must have! Affordable and fish is fresh, chips are nice and crispy too.<br/>Other options are a bit pricey but this special wont disappoint you, you get a good amount of chips and also 2 pieces of fish 😊

$10 Fish n Chips n Salad combo; fish is tarakihi which is a good upgrade from hoki. The donburi bowls are also very big for such a good price, the salmon taste more fresh in the donburi than it does from the cabinet sushi. Wait time can be long in busy hours, and the service there is always great.

very stingy quantity of fish in the fish salad, which they dowse in cucumber and onion. Service at this outlet is politely fake or hostile indifference. The salad greens inside the burgers are poor quality old lettuce browning at the edges

Ordered crumbed Tarakihi, and chips. Fish was very crispy and unbelievably fresh. Chips were custom cut and still warm when taken home and enjoyed. The meal also included complementary Tartar sauce which was a nice touch. Only complaint was the lady on the phone when ordering said the meal would take only 30 minutes and ended up 50. That was fine though as it was a Friday evening. Will be recommending and returning.

I mainly come here for the burgers. These guys make very very solid burgers. Probably Burger Fuel size. Most recently had a steak burger. I was afraid the steak would be too tough for a burger, but I was not disappointed. It wasn't too tough. Though there may have been a bit too much BBQ sauce slapped on.<br/>Will be coming back here for many many more burgers!<br/>Keep up the good work John Dory.<br/><br/>UPDATE.<br/>Just had the chicken burger. It was faaaan-tastic!

Being a local in Herne Bay, I visit John dory’s regularly.<br/>I normally get crumbed snapper and chips. It is SUPERB! crispy and well drained. The fish burgers are divine too. Nice friendly service and love the short wait on the phone orders. Highly recommend !!

Such great potential, but let down majorly with the mussels. I ordered 1 chips, 1 spring roll, and 5 mussels. The chips were great, best I've had in a while. The spring roll was good value & tasty. But unfortunately, the mussels (of which I paid for 5 & received 5) were TERRIBLE!! They were absolutely tasteless, & 2 of them were tiny (slightly bigger than a $2 coin). Possibly the worst mussels I've ever eaten. Not what I would expect at all from a place that claims to have "the best seafood with fresh fish delivered daily"... I phoned the shop soon after & told them the situation, & all they offered me was an apology, no promise of action to rectify the situation; poor customer service to top it all off. I will not be returning.

Divine fish and chips. Clean store and friendly staff. The fish was also really fresh :) Not overly greasy like other fish and chip places. Would have preferred to have given 4 and a half stars if had been possible only wish they sold john dory, otherwise excellent Quality and Recommended!

Worst fish and chips ever. Greasy, soggy and tasteless. Avoid at all costs! We will never visit this place again. It is the kind of place that even a call to explain how bad the meal is, is met with complete disinterest - so much for satisfying customers. Left with a vile, greasy taste after the experience.

Just recently had a fleeting trip back to Auckland and fancied some schnapper! We were staying in Herne Bay and purchased cooked oysters, mussels,schnapper and chips from John Dorys. The shop was very clean and the food and service excellent.<br/>Would definitely recommend!

This was a fluke that turned out to be such a pleasant gift for a scrumptious, delishhhhhhh burger in the city! I haven't had such an amazing fish burger ANYWHERE...worth every cent, every minute of the wait :) Great size, well made for a burger (in terms of how the lettuce etc was placed too), well packed...even the fries felt healthy- probably coz of how well they were wrapped and ridden of excess oil. With eventual popularity, I hope the quality of their food NEVER transforms into that of any regular burger place.
