Review Cypress Cafe - Auckland Central

Olivia Brown
My favorite coffee place in the World (no this is not an exaggeration). One of the reasons I look forward to coming back to New Zealand every time. The coffee is superb, the food is top notch and the service is amazing. I’m always sad when I go for my last coffee before I leave to go back to Europe (yes, this is better than Italian coffee). Tried buying their beans and recreating at home but it simply is not the same.

Very nicely located, off the main street of St Heliers. Food was delicious, although they gave me a rather spicy sausage. . Should ask people in future - and give another option. Quiet place with free WiFi too 🙂

Undoubtedly, the best coffee shop in St Heliers with a swag Korean flair that a distinguishing gentleman making the coffee and his elegant wife provide. I go there to observe the beauty of their movements, the honest smile and sincere welcoming that every coffee experience should promote; as a local, it is my refugee spot from the false pretentiousness that St Heliers and Kohimarama may be perceived for ─And the best of all: No real estate agents with mismatching Hallenstein 100 dollars suits and brown shoes and no socks using the coffee shop as surrogate office space to discuss money and properties that they don't personally have; instead, you find peaceful and gentle elderlies, well-dressed local families and good willing customers appreciating good coffee. ─There! I said it! ㋡

My go-to place in St. Heliers, especially on weekday morning. Great ambience, nice coffee (they have extra large size). Food cabine quite good. Love the jazzy and oldies music. Staffs would need to lower their voice when talking to each other though.
Gregory “Saint”
A nice small and cosy place near saint helliers beach... staff is kind and it’s prefect for breakfast and branch... I totally recommend it to pay a visit

One of the better cafes along the Tamaki Drive 'strip'. It is popular with the locals and has it's fair share of tourists also. Has seating for about 40 people inside and 3 tables outside. Variety of cabinet food or you can order a mix of breakfast if not in a hurry. Friendly staff and coffee was good (skinny latte). The minutes savouries are very tasty.
Aaron Cunningham
Fish and chips and a flat white. Realy good. Great café.
Natalie Nelson
Our first visit and we were not disappointed. The food and drinks came out quickly, fresh, hot and all at the same time. The creamy mushrooms were the best I've tasted and the quantities of all of our meals was generous. The staff were friendly, we'll be back.

Great service and excellent food.
Heemi Katene-Hill
Popular cafe with good food nibbles. Convenient in St Heliers but getting a park is difficult.
David Adams
The food and atmosphere was good. The Cafe was clean and tidy, staff were good and unobtrusive. Overall we had a nice bruch meeting after not seeing my God Father for a number of years ago.
Geoff Eades
Excellent food, friendly service and very wheelchair friendly

Went for lunch today. Had the pancakes with fresh fruit which was delicious and husband had the fish and chips and an extremely yummy berry smoothie. Great service too :-)

Nor the cheapest cafe I have been to but the quality and size of the breakfast made up for the price. Service was impeccable. Great experience and well worth a visit. I will be back.

Having never been to your establishment & reading your horrible, racist comments in the NZ Herald I will never eat or drink there & I will tell all my friends about you. Word of mouth is a powerful tool. You should apologise & retract your comments Mr Choa, you live in my country & this is unacceptable
Joella Cherese Monique
Actually wanted to rate this scummy place as a ZERO!! How disgusting to see a place of business treat a person of colour with such blatant disrespect. Mr Choi is an example of "how not to manage one's establishment". He is the epitome of someone who needs to go back to training school or maybe go be a bushman. You're business is a disgrace. This is my review and I will be spreading the word about you and your neanderthal attitude Cypress Cafe. Shame on you!
Eugene Ryder
I have never been to your cafe and I probably never will! The one star is based on the writing you put on one customers receipt. Shame on you!
Kosh O'Carroll
I won't judge your reasons for writing "black lady" on the receipt, perhaps whoever wrote it did not understand how it would come across, but your response was disgusting! Also FYI, you can't say you're not racist because you have a Korean employee, without sounding really racist...
Nadia Wallis
Cant believe the rascism in this place.. Never been here and never will!! NZ Herald says it all.. Poor lady, you should be ashamed of yourself, your 'Cafe' and the SHIT service!!
Clayton Kilkelly
To Nicholas, You are right regarding the docket. That small term was blown right out of proportion. The docket was a mistake and we could have forgiven that mistake. What the owner said to the media originally though was disgusting. The owner accused this lady of being a criminal amongst other things. His original comments have proved without a doubt that he, himself is the true racist. By racial profiling this woman as being a criminal because she is black, he's dug his own financial grave. People will not forget about this that easily. This has gone way beyond the docket. The docket didn't start this, the lady did but 2 wrongs don't make a right. The owner should never have spoken to the media let alone say what he did about this lady.

Love going here. It's a quant little place close by the sea with seriously delish food
Mailena Woonton Rawiri
1 star but only because half a star isn't an option. The cafe manager should have apologised and given a $100 credit to the customer. That's what I would have done.
Alex Mcleod
No good publicity for your business when your expose on NZ Herald. And unlucky for you guys because of a thing called Social Media. Shit spreads like wildfire. Get rid of your manager because he's has shown his immaturity in his response. Hasn't met this lady but is still willing to judge her and call her a 'ugly women'. Like who does that. And reassess/ retrain all your staff on racism.
Mel Coddington
Well if you are going to bring your racist attitudes to NZ, you might as well go home. Seriously everyone needs to be respected and treated well. In this day and age the workers and manager need to buck up their ideas.
Ngahuia Takirau
I don’t believe in paying for a cup of coffee but when I do (once every 6 months) silly me, I do expect it to taste all of $4.50 worth!!!! As for the banana slice - toasting it will still not take away the lumps of baking soda. As for the service - a smile never goes amiss.
Thomas Maniapoto
Very disappointed with the Cypress Cafe we are trying to build a great country and you are trying to destroy anything good about it. You should not be in business and AUckland should boycott you cafe. Close your doors we dont need people like you.
Michelle Anne
Terrible service. Rude staff. I felt sick afterwards. Would never go back.
Lynda Kainuku
Disgusting....i will never go here again...found a fly in my soup!
Blake Delaney
Imagine if your wife was referred to as slit eye or yellow whilst eating out. U would be furious.so unproffessional
Tania Funaki
Can only image what sort of response the customer would have got if confronted manager when incident occurred.
Steven Munro
Manager stinks to high heaven. This business is going downhill really fast.
Karen Adams
Clearly a racist owner who hates people of colour by stating they are ugly, criminal and liars. Won't be supporting a business that promotes and condones this sort of behaviour.
Jack Gray
I know the beautiful young lady at the recieving end of this incident and stand by her honesty 100%. Looking at the rude, judgemental, petty and discriminatory responses of the Cypress Cafe owner Don Choa, I can see that his blind retaliatory accusations show who really is the loose cog in the wheel here. What does anyone have to gain by being a 'trouble maker' in this way? Absolutely nothing? When I put myself in my friends shoes, if I got a recieipt saying 'Black Man' I think I too would be a) annoyed (as we are not Black?.) b) a little offended (couldn't they have asked my name or given me a number?) c) weighed up the productiveness of going back to confront them (which puts all the responsibility on me to own up to my own shame/confusion/distress) and then probably chosen to just let it go. Yip thats right, on the day to day we have to choose our battles and sometimes its easier to suck it up and take that hot chocolate and get on with it. However I applaud the friend who didn't feel the burden only the outrage that when you put all the microaggressions together - and by voicing it strongly - your friend still cops it by being called "ugly" and "a criminal". The only criminal here is prejudice and denial, not choosing to value a person for who and what they are. Meanwhile unknown to him the person is a University student, a performer at Te Matatini, upstanding, humble and drop dead gorgeous - aint NO WAY she cant be remembered walking in a room. Boycott this behaviour of national negligence, service goes way beyond a docket, we are worth much much more than a hot chocolate and a bottle of overpriced water. #stopthecycles #saynotobullshitlikethis #speakup

Another gem not on the trendy strip of Tamaki Drive but who cares. The food and coffee is great and cheaper than most places in the area. Eggs Benedict and Fish n Chips delicious. Decor simple but don't judge a book by it's cover. A find.
Joelle Mcleary
Absolutely beautiful food! Had multiple things and everything was delicious! Good pricing too & friendly service! Will definitely be returning!
Jonathan Bangera
Just another humble place around Auckland to have brunch. I wasn’t quite impressed with their coffee but the food was surprisingly good. The service was fast and prompt. And the fact that it is situated right next to the beach adds a lot to its finesse.
Twarita Dhorje
very beautiful place along the beach! welcoming staff and quick service. I tried couple of brunch menues, out of which omlet dishes are really tasty and tummy filling! The price is bit high for some common dishes like fish n chips but overall serving and quality standards are high. Enjoy delicious food on the beach :)
Nzweston
Nice food, good location and friendly service. The waffles were light and tasty with plenty of maple syrup. Coffee is great too. Can be a little noisy on a busy day but otherwise very close to perfect!

With my friend have been there and we had a really lovely brunch time there!<br/>St. Heliers is the best place to enjoy your relax time in my opinion. I had a egg on toast and my friend had a waffle with ice cream. It was definitely worthy. The poached eggs were perfectly cooked!! It was the best ever I have had:)

When I’ve been to St.Heliers with my friend we met awosome cafe ever! Maybe you don’t know it but we’re like foodfighters probably less than Allblack players haha. Cypress cafe in st.heliers is perfect place for when you want a quiet moment to escape the CBD's hustle and bustle also cozy and warm with good vibe me and my boyfriend visited on sunday and had bacon eggs benedict ( was $ 17.50 ) and fish and chips ( was $ 17.50 ) with two small flat white ( $ 4 each ) bacon was soft not rough as rubber and the poached egg was perfectly runny . Fish and chips was AMAZING with crispy battered fish with side of salad and aioli which is my boyfriend loved :) all the dishes was faultless. staffs are nice & attentive too. i'd highly recommend the coffee and food.

I went this place with my friend and we ordered one hot chips and one mocha and one flat white. The price of hot chips was reasonable and it was worth with to have it. Mocha and flat white was absolutely delicious and if I were you I would come here rather than other cafes. This cafe has the atmosphere that I was looking for and also the staff members are very friendly and I felt very welcomed😄😄😄
