Review Curry King - Auckland Central

Alex Tjahjana
Staff members are friendly and patient. Just have to remember to bring your cards or cash as they don't do paywave. The curry is full flavours and moreish, definitely not a thinned down version of curries. My lamb saagwala have very tender, big chunks of lamb pieces. I will love it even more if they put spinach in it or at least put more spinach into the curry. Their advertising is a bit misleading as they said they have $13 curry on certain nights in the week, but when I got there he said its lunch time deals. However, they only charge me $14.50 for the curry and a box of rice with very generous portion size, so it's still a great deal. Definitely will frequent the place.

Their curry is generous for a $13.00 with rice on a Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday specials. Other shops you get half curry half rice only. Their lamb madras is also yummy. Customer service is also good. I've been buying from this shop for almost 10 years already.

Great variety of vegetarian options and the quantity is quite good. They are flexible enough to customize the ingredients as well. Always ready in 15mins from the call and accessible for takeaway with a parking right in front.
Ella Cunningham
Good vegetarian options! Have tried a range of the veggie dishes and all have lots of fresh veggies, with good tasting gravies & spice levels. Nice naan and samosas too, all at a good price.

Enjoyed the $9.90 lunch special of a butter chicken with rice and a nan. Value for curry, although i could've devoured 2. Giving a 5 star review as this place is better than its current google rating :)

I see some tough reviews for this place, but our local friend recommended and we had a great meal. No one in our group got the butter chicken, which sounds like according to other reviews may not be their strongest dish, but i couldnt say. We had a wide range of other dishes and they were delicious. Would recommend!
jejekoma
One of the best tasting curries around and good prices too.

It's very seldom I can find somewhere with a food option that can satisfy my hunger. But this place... Quantity/quality and taste, they have it all. I try to visit at least once every time I'm in avondale.

I ordered chicken biryani it was good & taste perfectly like a Srilankan dish. And the portion was really good with 6 diced chicken pieces.
Marie Collins
I can only go by my own experience & the food we were served on the night. The proprietor (?) was welcoming, informative & helpful. We asked for mild and medium $9.90 butter chicken specials (which included a Naan bread & can of coke each). Great bargain!! The meals were nice & hot and spot on with the flavors. So no complaints here. I would encourage everyone to look closer to home & support yr "locals" as opposed to the big-name fast food outlets. For these smaller businesses, our support is crucial.

Lamb Saagwala, and 10/10 Chicken Tikka, always good, and very affordable

This is one of my favorite takeaway places in Auckland for Indian food. I have ordered from them many times and the delivery is always on time. The food specifically is excellent. What most indian places in NZ don't understand is that adding sugar to the already hot food neither makes it mild nor makes it Indian. This place however always gives me great mild curries and not a single ounce of sugar in it. The food is delicious and I can taste all the spices without it burning my taste buds. This tell me that the curries are made to order and are fresh. I would gladly order from them any day. If you haven't tried them I suggest go try!!! You won't be be disappointed especially if you want real Indian food that is not hot ( no chilli powder) and really flavorful.

Chana masala was excellent, great flavour (though agree with comments it could be more spicy). Staff were absolutely lovely and the price is very reasonable, what's not to like

Stayed at an air bnb down the road from this place and happened to stop in one day for some dinner and we were blown away by the friendly service and incredible food. Even though there were many takeaways in the area that we tried, nothing could compare to CURRY KING! ๐Ÿ‘‘ The staff were very helpful in making sure we had many vegan options to choose from and you simply can't beat the price and the portion size. We were so impressed we returned 5 more times before we left that week. Quick and crave worthy comfort food! Thank you so much!

Butter chicken had little flavour. Nan bread was soggy and also flavourless. Only good thing was the food was cheap.

$8.50 for butter chicken, rice and naan. You have to be joking right? No jokes foodies, Curry King does the best curry deal Iโ€™ve witnessed so far in Auckland and the most awesome thing is that the curry doesnt taste like shit either!

In fact the Butter Chicken is actually one of the best Iโ€™ve tasted in Auckland. The curry itself was thick, like those containers of Hummus you would get in the supermarket. In terms of tastes, its on the sweeter side, however I had the medium and the kick really helps with the sweetness. I also love the fact that they dont skimp on the amount of chicken you get. Going through the curry there was easily 6-7 solid chicken pieces.ย

As great as the curry was, there is a reason the costs was $8.50. The most glaring fact would be that I hate how they cook the rice, its extremely watery and you almost taste the rawness of the starch because you didnt wash your rice properly. Another disappointing aspect was that after the delicious meal, I had to go the bathroom after and the smell that came out was pungent to the least.ย

I don't want to finish this review, talking about my excrement so I left the best for last. The naan bread was bloody fantastic. Crispy, freshly made and when eaten in combination with the curry, pure bliss.ย

At $8.50, its hard to resist and once every week is a healthy way to keep your stomach in check.

Great tasting North Indian cuisine, always hot and tasty. I order via Uber eats, and the favourite is always Paneer Makhani, Garlic Naan, and Pakora.
I've tried all the menu items, and I can say all dishes are made with love and care, by a true chef that loves food. Well done team, keep it up!

We ordered a butter chicken and neegiri lamb korma. The place and ambiance is average. Don't expect too high but don't be fooled neither. Its a jewel in the desert. Very nice! Will be back for more.

Found this restaurant through Menulog with 15% discount for 1st meal. I ordered paneer mushroom masala and 2 naan breads. Price was ok but they need to consider about taste of their preparation. My total bill was 12.75$ for curry, rice and 2 naan breads. Price wise that was really cheap with Menulog discount.

This use to be good, but the new owners do not understand your phone order and fail to add that they have increased there prices, not great meat , chewy .not great service

Weโ€™ve been ordering takeaway from here for 2 years now, and loved every single food weโ€™ve tried because itโ€™s so damn good! The place has been updated - itโ€™s cleaner, and I notice theyโ€™re more busier now than before. I love the saag paneer - the paneer pieces are chewy just the way I like it, not a fan of soft tasteless paneer like the other Indian takeaways do. And the spices of the dishes are just right. Their rice is also very good - like they add extra flavouring like cumin and/or salt. Butter chicken is sweeter flavour with a strong cheesy/creamy taste with nice chicken pieces that taste like tandoori chicken. The breads are great too! I can see generous paneer cheese pieces on the paneer naan. And the papadums have cumin seeds in them! This place is small, and the staff shout at each other a lot lol, but donโ€™t let that put you off! Itโ€™s great food! They put a lot of effort in their dishes and it shows!

We got food from here last night and everything was delicious and very well priced. Curries were nice and hot, the lamb biriyani was YUM and all the breads were so good. It's also great that you get a container of rice for each curry you order as most places you have to buy this separately. I highly recommend!

We visit Curry King at least once a week, are huge fans of Indian food and love this place! The food is lovely, the people are exceptionally lovely, would recommend!
Ashley Chand
Best south Indian I had. I can't stop going there, I get either the prawn with capsicum and rice or the lamb biriyani, my favourite dishes. Very good and nice friendly staff. Very good quality dishes. Love it so much so would recommend eating at the restaurant with only a few tables there that sit about 4 to 6 pax at each table or take away it
Jayraj.shelar92
Tried most of their veg options, it is amazing. Visit there often for takeaway and real authentic Indian dishes. The ambience is really good and always clean.

Such an under-rated place, we eat here all the time & they have free delivery to where we are as well, the food is awesome & always arrives piping hot. We have tried a few curry places in our area but curry king is still our number 1 ๐Ÿ˜Š

This is my go-to place when i am in mood for some outside food yet too lazy to get up and get ready. Excellent entrees though the mains somehow can be disappointing owing to all curries tasting almost the same. The Indian chinese is a must try and highly recommended. The owners are very friendly and provide with very good customer service.
They stopped giving out rice with their indian chinese curries which i would say is a new change i dont approve of.
The only bad experience i can think of is the time they gave me beef mushroom whereas i had ordered peas mushroom. I didnt get back to them as my roomie was happy to eat it.
All in all a good experience if u plan to order in on a lazy day and enjoy a decent meal.

Ordered from Menulog at 5.30 with an expected delivery time of 6.15. Phoned at 6.30 and was told it would be at least another 20 minutes away. It shouldn't take over an hour for this food to be delivered when we live five minutes drive away. Edit: food finally arrived at 6.55.

The food is so tasty
The service is excellent
The price is value for money
I buy food from curry king 4 times a week
I love it the owner is very friendly any problems they
Look into it seriously. The chef is top Chef from madras! India.

Ordered a Butter Chicken and Kadai Chicken, Kadai was incredibly salty (Inedible) and called to complain. We received another Kadai but this time there was not just Chicken in the dish! Few bits of Beef included (maybe on the house) and was still very salty. Butter Chicken tasted like tomato soup with some sugar thrown in. Have had Kadai in many other places and this one is by far the worst. Too salty and then the second one has some mixed meat inside! Would not recommend.

I was pleasantly surprised that this curry was actually awesome. For a two curry 20 dollar meal its very hard to be beaten. Good flavours and was moved to review
Kylie Cook
Amazing food and service everytime. Always extremely polite. Would go as far as saying it's our favourite Indian food. Definitely no complaints.
Nick
Really nice people who bend over backwards to accommodate your meal requests. Have been going to curry king for a while and is king of the cheap eats. Good hearty meals

Haven't been to curry king in months. We first moved out west a few months ago and I totally forgot about the place. I found it again and now I'm hooked! The chef makes the dishes spice to order and it's very authentic.
It's not a looker from the outside, but deffo worth the venture in to order.
Highly recommend the Jal Frazi hot! The nicest curry in town!
Keep up the good work guys.

Good food, also good vegetarian options. Friendly service and fast service. I hope they get enough customers to stay in Avondale as ย they make good contribution to the local foodscene.
A Different Critic
I've eaten here multiple times & its mixed reviews but as the saying goes you're only as good as your last. I ordered chicken korma (mild) again overly sauced & this time it was so overly salted. A lot of sauce & not much meat. Naan bread was typical couldn't fault it. Will I be back ? Hmm who knows.

Lovely food and pretty darn good value for money too. ๐Ÿ‘I usually order the Lamb Sagwala or the Seekhbab which is always really tasty. Great for those times when you just cannot be bothered cooking. Happy Days.

Such a shit place to have dinner for family As i ordered 1 lamb nawabi and kadai chicken which is barely accepted by adults only but was mentioned as it should be kiwi hot which is too salty and other think punched us that WE MENTION THAT WE WANT BUTTER CHICKEN FOR KIDS AND IT SUPPOSE TO SWEET WHICH IS NOT SWEET AT ALL AND IT IS TOO SPICY WHICH EVEN ADULTS CANNOT HANDLE . KIDS FELLING THAT THEIR JAW WAS BURNING . WHEN WE BEEN TO STORE THE OWNER DOES NOT ACCEPT THEIR FAULTS AT ALL.
Angela
Yum. Fantastic food. Great quality chicken which is always a nice surprise. We got home delivery. Took a wee bit long but was piping hot on arrival. Would recommend.
Gurinder Karwal
Cheap and best for takeways. Curries are good.
But don't like Naan breads. Too thick. Once I ordered chapaati(simple roti) but it was too thick. Overall good curries..

We regularly order from this place as the food is excellent. Family run, super friendly and the guy who delivers the food has the warmest smile in town.

Home delivery is usually very quick and the food nice and hot.

Since a visit to India I can tell the food spices are very authentic and the menu is well priced.

i would recommend this place to everyone. we usually order for delivery and the quality of food is great, and relatively quick. i asked for the chicken to be thoroughly cooked at it came to our door piping hot. really really good :)

Problem list:

1) We phoned to place an order for pick up, the staff member advised it will be ready in 30 minutes. We decided to give it 40 minutes, and when we arrived he said it will be another 10 minutes, so in total 50 minuets to wait for 2 mains. We ended up waiting another 25 minutes, so over an hour!

2) Order was incorrect. Their were no 'sprinkled cashews'. We ended up using OUR OWN cashews and stirred it in.

3) Both orders were cold and undercooked. We had to microwave both mains, both rice, and the onion bajis.

The rice was undercooked, hard, cold and raw. We had to cook it for 5 minutes each in the microwave! This was completely unacceptable. The onion bajis were raw, the batter was still raw and wet on the inside, and the onion wasn't even cooked at all. We had to throw them away. They were not even edible.

In general the food was very undercooked, cold and raw, too spicy even though we ordered Mild, and inedable.

Unfortunately I wouldn't even give this to my dog, I ended up having toast.

4) The gentleman servicing us kept blaming it was busy, but waiting 1 hour and 10 minutes for two mains and some onions, it was raw and undercooked anyway. We are very disappointed, the reason we chose to get a takeaway tonight was because we were saving time. We had a meeting scheduled, and were late for that, plus we have a flight later tonight. We wasted over an hour waiting for food we had to throw away, obviously going back wasn't an option with flights booked and all, plus we would probably wait a couple of hours for a replacement.

I will never eat here again, and I will never recommend this place to anyone. The food was below average, and this particular Indian takeaways is actually more expensive than other ones, surprisingly.

Their were no real flavours, it was just an overflow of sauce with a tiny portion of fish. The sauce was a complete overkill. Half way through, it started to go runny and watery, leaving an oily texture, that was when I decided to bin the food.

My partner didn't finish his either. We spend hard earned money, on food we had to wait over an hour for, which was inedible so had to be thrown away.
Hannah Thach
Best takeaway place in Avondale hands down- not that thats hard to beat. Aside from that, the food is VERY cheaply priced compared to other indian restaurants, and tastes more like restaurant quality rather than greasy indian takeaway.
Andrew S
We were quite excited about placing our first order at Curry King after reading all the rave reviews on Menu Mania "best Indian in Auckland" etc. Especially as there is really little to no choice when it comes to good takeaway food in the Avondale area, unless of course you like bad fish and chips. We were also pleased to to hear that they deliver. Bonus!

Anyway - our food came roughly on time but was a disappointment. The mango chicken was super sweet with loads of sauce and very little meat. The lamb saagwala was sightly better but also swimming in sauce with very little meat. Both dishes were lacking in that flavour punch you expect from a good curry. Also our naan bread was uninspired with some of the dough still looking uncooked. Wont be ordering again unfortunately. Back to the drawing board I'm afraid.

Absolutely delicious and they deliver!! price is great for quality Indian food. love the samosas. What more could you ask for??
Will definitely be putting their number in my speed dial. Am going to have some of my left overs now.

We order from curry king most Friday nights free delivery great food and comes hot. I highly recommend this place its better then any other curry place in the city not to mention super cheap
Danah D
You have to try the chicken korma (medium) - it is the best curry ever. I've tried a few curries and none come close to this. Looove their food. Reasonably priced too which is just a bonus :)
Justin Maloney
One word... YUM!

I'll be back.
Jitterbug88
Tonight is not even close to the first time I've eaten food here. I've frequented this place since before I had kids, as do my parents and my brothers.
Beautiful flavours, consistently serving authentic food of the same high standard. Also very reasonable prices and if for some reason we moved out of Avondale I still wouldn't give up this diamond in the rough. Prefer it over any other Auckland Indian restaurant I've been to in a long, long time, esp considering what I might pay elsewhere for inferior quality. A+
Amanda Grant
You've got to try this place. I could not stop talking about the flavour of the food to my husband and anyone who would listen. I hadn't even finished my meal the first time I tried it when I just had to ring them and thank them for such great food. What a nice surprise. We were going out of the area for good curry. We are now committed local fans. 10/10.
John Wayne
Drove all the way from east side for these curries. And went back again later in the week. Good curry. And reasonably priced.
Jo Ryan
The food is excellent! I have invited many friends to share this brillant experience. The service is always friendly and prompt. You do not have to pay for a delivery charge if you spend $25,which is fantastic. It's so great to have a quiet gem of a place just up the road.
Maddy
Best curry ever! don't be fooled by the surroundings, this place beats most of the trendier, more expensive places in Auckland city. Defiantly give it a try!
Joanna
Awesome food. Best day to go Wednesday - must have different cook I reckon. Lovely people. Now my local and easy to order over the phone (I must go there often because they know my voice!) Highly recommended. Have tried everything on the menu.
Salim K
Just moved to the area recently and found this place by chance. Humble surroundings - but ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS FOOD (especially when the lady is cooking). Now this is my families new Indian local. Friendly, helpful staff. Prompt delivery too.
Do try it! Recommend biryani rice & seikh kebabs.
Alan
Amazing value - the food is FAR better than you would expect for either the price or the premises.
The Indian Chinese dishes are interesting and a nice surprise.
The Mango chicken is wonderful, so obviously fresh and the korma and madras curries were great too - very flavourful.
Our large group was very impressed with the delivery, and it was great just how different all the dishes tasted.
Tim
Relatively low cost, and delicious! One of my favorite places for Indian food regardless of price. Curries are on the slightly sweet side which I absolutely love!
Recommended-big time!
