$8.50 for butter chicken, rice and naan. You have to be joking right? No jokes foodies, Curry King does the best curry deal I’ve witnessed so far in Auckland and the most awesome thing is that the curry doesnt taste like shit either!
In fact the Butter Chicken is actually one of the best I’ve tasted in Auckland. The curry itself was thick, like those containers of Hummus you would get in the supermarket. In terms of tastes, its on the sweeter side, however I had the medium and the kick really helps with the sweetness. I also love the fact that they dont skimp on the amount of chicken you get. Going through the curry there was easily 6-7 solid chicken pieces.
As great as the curry was, there is a reason the costs was $8.50. The most glaring fact would be that I hate how they cook the rice, its extremely watery and you almost taste the rawness of the starch because you didnt wash your rice properly. Another disappointing aspect was that after the delicious meal, I had to go the bathroom after and the smell that came out was pungent to the least.
I don't want to finish this review, talking about my excrement so I left the best for last. The naan bread was bloody fantastic. Crispy, freshly made and when eaten in combination with the curry, pure bliss.
At $8.50, its hard to resist and once every week is a healthy way to keep your stomach in check.
Great tasting North Indian cuisine, always hot and tasty. I order via Uber eats, and the favourite is always Paneer Makhani, Garlic Naan, and Pakora.
I've tried all the menu items, and I can say all dishes are made with love and care, by a true chef that loves food. Well done team, keep it up!
We ordered a butter chicken and neegiri lamb korma. The place and ambiance is average. Don't expect too high but don't be fooled neither. Its a jewel in the desert. Very nice! Will be back for more.
We’ve been ordering takeaway from here for 2 years now, and loved every single food we’ve tried because it’s so damn good! The place has been updated - it’s cleaner, and I notice they’re more busier now than before. I love the saag paneer - the paneer pieces are chewy just the way I like it, not a fan of soft tasteless paneer like the other Indian takeaways do. And the spices of the dishes are just right. Their rice is also very good - like they add extra flavouring like cumin and/or salt. Butter chicken is sweeter flavour with a strong cheesy/creamy taste with nice chicken pieces that taste like tandoori chicken. The breads are great too! I can see generous paneer cheese pieces on the paneer naan. And the papadums have cumin seeds in them! This place is small, and the staff shout at each other a lot lol, but don’t let that put you off! It’s great food! They put a lot of effort in their dishes and it shows!
We got food from here last night and everything was delicious and very well priced. Curries were nice and hot, the lamb biriyani was YUM and all the breads were so good. It's also great that you get a container of rice for each curry you order as most places you have to buy this separately. I highly recommend!
We visit Curry King at least once a week, are huge fans of Indian food and love this place! The food is lovely, the people are exceptionally lovely, would recommend!
Best south Indian I had. I can't stop going there, I get either the prawn with capsicum and rice or the lamb biriyani, my favourite dishes. Very good and nice friendly staff. Very good quality dishes. Love it so much so would recommend eating at the restaurant with only a few tables there that sit about 4 to 6 pax at each table or take away it
Tried most of their veg options, it is amazing. Visit there often for takeaway and real authentic Indian dishes. The ambience is really good and always clean.
Such an under-rated place, we eat here all the time & they have free delivery to where we are as well, the food is awesome & always arrives piping hot. We have tried a few curry places in our area but curry king is still our number 1 😊
This is my go-to place when i am in mood for some outside food yet too lazy to get up and get ready. Excellent entrees though the mains somehow can be disappointing owing to all curries tasting almost the same. The Indian chinese is a must try and highly recommended. The owners are very friendly and provide with very good customer service.
They stopped giving out rice with their indian chinese curries which i would say is a new change i dont approve of.
The only bad experience i can think of is the time they gave me beef mushroom whereas i had ordered peas mushroom. I didnt get back to them as my roomie was happy to eat it.
All in all a good experience if u plan to order in on a lazy day and enjoy a decent meal.
Staff members are friendly and patient. Just have to remember to bring your cards or cash as they don't do paywave. The curry is full flavours and moreish, definitely not a thinned down version of curries. My lamb saagwala have very tender, big chunks of lamb pieces. I will love it even more if they put spinach in it or at least put more spinach into the curry. Their advertising is a bit misleading as they said they have $13 curry on certain nights in the week, but when I got there he said its lunch time deals. However, they only charge me $14.50 for the curry and a box of rice with very generous portion size, so it's still a great deal. Definitely will frequent the place.
Their curry is generous for a $13.00 with rice on a Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday specials. Other shops you get half curry half rice only.
Their lamb madras is also yummy.
Customer service is also good. I've been buying from this shop for almost 10 years already.
Great variety of vegetarian options and the quantity is quite good. They are flexible enough to customize the ingredients as well. Always ready in 15mins from the call and accessible for takeaway with a parking right in front.
Good vegetarian options! Have tried a range of the veggie dishes and all have lots of fresh veggies, with good tasting gravies & spice levels.
Nice naan and samosas too, all at a good price.
Enjoyed the $9.90 lunch special of a butter chicken with rice and a nan. Value for curry, although i could've devoured 2. Giving a 5 star review as this place is better than its current google rating :)
I see some tough reviews for this place, but our local friend recommended and we had a great meal. No one in our group got the butter chicken, which sounds like according to other reviews may not be their strongest dish, but i couldnt say. We had a wide range of other dishes and they were delicious. Would recommend!
One of the best tasting curries around and good prices too.
It's very seldom I can find somewhere with a food option that can satisfy my hunger. But this place...
Quantity/quality and taste, they have it all.
I try to visit at least once every time I'm in avondale.
I ordered chicken biryani it was good & taste perfectly like a Srilankan dish. And the portion was really good with 6 diced chicken pieces.
I can only go by my own experience & the food we were served on the night.
The proprietor (?) was welcoming, informative & helpful. We asked for mild and medium $9.90 butter chicken specials (which included a Naan bread & can of coke each). Great bargain!!
The meals were nice & hot and spot on with the flavors. So no complaints here.
I would encourage everyone to look closer to home & support yr "locals" as opposed to the big-name fast food outlets. For these smaller businesses, our support is crucial.
