Review Epicer - Auckland Central

Tushal Bhadang
A post-modern Indian ambiance welcomes you. The menu is very modern Indian with an emphasis on combining typically European ingredients like kale (an ideal replacement for spinach) with typical Indian ingredients like onions and gram flour to make fritters. It is without doubt a great deviation to an Indian palette of flavours, delicious even. Our appetizers were very interesting with flavours of mint, basil and tamarind reminiscent of the street food in India which came across in spades in both the Paani Puri and Aloo Chaat. The chef's attention to detail was admirable with green coloured puris as these are usually white. The chef's desire to respect and honour the Indian tandoor and the flavours dished out in the Tandoori Paneer were one of the best in Auckland. A great twist to garlic naan is their version of oats naan, i.e. oats sprinkled over instead of garlic. Crispy edges and a delicious bite. On this occasion we tried those vegetarian fare but I have no doubt the chef will deliver in spades when it comes to meat based dishes. Our main course of cashew gravy dumplings and daal makhani was sensational a little too rich maybe. Portion sizes were great for 4 light-eating diners.

Absolutely unbelievable and ecstatic experience. Lovely food, marvelous service, amazing location and one of the best places I have ever been to. I came during my birthday and I was incredibly surprised when the owner ordered a special birthday cake for me that was crafted by the chef. The staff was spectacular and the music was calming which helped with the overall charm of the area. I look forward to being back at this amazing place for future events or for another banging dining adventure.

I went there with some friends. For birthday party . And the food was awesome in taste and value for money. In addition, they do a good job on weekends. The late night staff on Friday's and saturday's is very nice and quick in service. At that time of the day it really hard to maintain quality. But there food is always very well warm and fresh at midnight also on weekends

The food is absolutely tasty & reminds me of traditional Indian flavours. A lot of the ingredients are made in-house such as the Soya Chaap and Paneer dishes - they melt in your mouth and are soooo delicious. The menu itself is very innovative and the cocktails aren't less when it comes to choosing between the options. We enjoyed our interaction with the chefs and staff, it was a lovely dining experience

Visited this modern Indian food place on very second day after they opened recently. Initially my expectations were of typical Indian food. But it all changed when food was served with amazing combination of food. Keep up the good work 😊 thanks for different and amazing Indian food.

Had a great overall experience. From food to ambience everything was beyond perfect. We ordered Konkani fish, blue cheese naan, Laksa chicken kebab and Nonya stir fry chicken and I must say that each of them had a uniqueness in the flavor. I highly recommend the place. PS: Ice cream and gulab jamin brulee were the show stoppers.

Best Indian food ever . Although they have a specialised fusion menu , but their authentic curries are to die for too. Cocktails and customer service are at par, if not above , with any 5 star hotel in India . A must try!!!

Not many times people find a Michelin Star Chef cooking food for and we were honored to be the one. Love ambiance and it is worth every penny. Will be back for more
Steve

When arrived this place it was completely empty and most of the dishes from menu was not available as only chef was working in kitchen. Ruined my birthday dinner. Not a worth place not coming here again . If this was the situation restaurant should have called me and informed in advance.

Tasteful interior decor just like its food. . Pleasant experience, service was good but slow. Each dish had a different flavour. I will definitely go back again.

Very disappointing food, definitely won't go back. We ordered two different entrees and the sauces were exactly the same. What sort of menu design is that? Also, one of the entrees was way too salty. Biryani tasted like Uncle Bens express rice.

We 5 people went excited to this place as hyped the chef from Michelin star đŸ’«, full points for the presentation of the food and the ambience of the restaurant. The menu was super attractive and the cocktails descriptions were Épic, But the taste of the food and cocktails below the average not matching the expectations. Just one star extra for the ambience and presentation.

We went for the second time today with two children. We clearly emailed the restaurant before and let them know we'd be bringing kids. We also received a call the day before to confirm bookings and ensure that despite it being a degustation menu night, that they'd be fine with us eating a la carte. This was confirmed. We arrived there and we felt like we were second class citizens. The owner went and spoke to every other table multiple times but didn't even glance over at ours. Our entrees took an hour to arrive and then another hour before the mains. It was incredibly disappointing, espcially considering how expensive it was. We had only come tonight as we'd gotten great service last time. We'd talked it up to our guest so much that he and the kids were so excited. Only to be very disappointed by the service.

Pathetic food, Ordered Dal tadka from ubereats, Dal had no green chillies, No coriander, No tomatoes, No taste. Pathetic food.. Its a shame you have a michelin star chef.. I would never recommend this place.

And This is the 4th time i am ordering, Don’t waste your money in their shit food. There are plenty of good options. I regret wasting my money on them.. There is a reason why they have removed their ratings from zomato.. Believe me and don’t visit or order from this restaurant.
Pic attached for proof, And I can cook better Dal fry then the one you sent..

Their rice is good, Thank god they are atleast good at cooking rice.

Had dinner at this place last nigh on the occasion of my uncles birthday, Called and booked table for the same. For our surprise table was decorated with balloons and we were welcomed with great broad smile by their attendant and owner himself.

On our call got to know that they have recently started with curry menu and we were surely wanted to have that as a main course.

We started off with lot of cocktails 🍾 which were bomb. Roohafza mojito , shringaar and fairytale ending won our hearts .Tried at least 7-8 of them and had to repeat most of them. Taste - presentation - suggestion 10/10.

Along with cocktails had starters, “lamb chop Kashmiri” is the must must have they just melt in your mouth. Soya chaap, rendang seekh were among other hits too.

As we were already full with drinks and starters still wanted to try their curry menu so couldn’t help but orders chicken kadhai and lamb saagwala with roti , naan and laccha paratha ( laccha paratha is something you must order).

One more thing what made our evening one of the most memorable is that we truely had fine dine experience. As we were hanging out after a long time we wanted to sit chat with no hurry dinner. This place gave us purely fine dine experience.

Ambience is another thing which attracted our eyes. Floral pastel theme bright lights open kitchen beautiful frames and what not and not to forget beautiful bar.

Loved this place. Going back again for sure specially for cocktails and lamb chops.

A big thank you to the team.

I have been there once and I don't think I will go there anymore.
Food quality wasn't as I expected, the staff had no training what so ever (I had my empty cocktail glass all night on the table).
There were 4 couples at the place including us and the service wasn't good and slow.

Sorry, but it was a disappointment...I wish you all the best.

Went to the restaurant considering it appeared in Herald and the apparently "award winning" chef. There was nothing award winning about the food or the service. Food took such a long time to arrive and wasnt even hot as it should be and neither had taste. Fish was dry with no flavour. Chicken was stale. No - this is not Indian and not even fusion. The staff took great care in avoiding the customers. A total rip off.

We booked online, arrived, they acknowledged we had a booking, but they didn't have a table for us, I suspect they had added our table to that of a large group that was there before us.

They squeezed 4 of us onto a table for 2. after 1.5 hrs our mains had not arrived (they had by then moved us to a larger table) then they served us a pizza (unbelievable) to tide us over promising the mains would be out in a few minutes. Finally 30 minutes later the mains arrived. Food was awful, supposedly slow cooked lamb, tough as boots with a thick awful sauce. They other mains underwhelming.

A couple that arrive after us and took our original table ended up being served before us.

Extremely disappointed, stay away.

Ordered the stuffed mushrooms laksa chicken gunpowder sweet potato chips for entree followed by trio of naan, biryani, Kashmiri lamb, paneer kofta and a chicken curry for main. Considering this is supposed to be run by a Michelin started chef the experience was EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTING!!! The service was average we had to ask for
Water three times and on the third time we actually asked for a jug to be given to us. The food was similar and I was kinda shocked at the Kashmiri lamb it was extremely over cooked to a point that it was hard to cut, totally understand in India none of our meat is cooked medium/medium
Rare but our stuff is juicy and soft and falling off the bone. When the trio of naan showed up I felt cheated with the size of the naan. We actually decided to not get desert after this and went down the road to Ben and Jerry’s

Located on Ponsonby road, its a must try place. I have been here for a dinner on Tuesday night, it was almost a full restaurant, so I will advise all to make a reservation first for a safer side. We started with cocktails in which we ordered Gully time which was Vodka Base cocktail and Desi daru which was whisky base cocktail. We also ordered Sangria. Moving towards dinner we ordered Mumbai wadi falafel and Épicer naan trio for a bar bites. The Mumbai wadi falafel was tasty however it was dry. Trio naan was simply outstanding. I am not a fan of blue cheese however I really enjoyed a blue cheese naan more than other two types of naan. In Entree we got Broccoli seekh which was again delicious. Came with pineapple zucchini it was really well presented. Moving towards mains we gotSpinach cottage cheese kofta, it was so good every bite was melting in a mouth and dish came with little portion of rice in a same plate. Rice was perfectly cooked and full of flavours. It was simply great food. In dessert we ordered all three desserts which was Gulab jamun brĂ»lĂ©e , baileys macadamia Kulfi and mango pannacotta. Macadamia kulfi I like the most. It was creamy, crunchy and flavourful with Baileys. I feel mango pannacotta should be more sweet. And there should be more caramelized sugar on brĂ»lĂ©e as caramel was soft, I feel it should be more caramelized and crunchy so we can break the set caramel with a back of the spoon. However it was absolutely delicious. Overall service was good, Ambience was welcoming. Enjoyed dinner here. Thank you #Épicer.

Went here on a Friday evening in a group of 4. Service was prompt and our host was knowledgeable about food. For thr price point, food was a hit and miss depending on the dish you order. Pork Belly Vindaloo was the standout. Whereas both fish dishes were extremely disappointing as they are extremely similar and would have expected our host to tell us so when ordering. Fitout and ambience was okay at best - it felt like a superficial renovation. Cutlery and table arrangement could be alot better. Its a very big open space with high ceilings so can be very noisy. Considering its advertised as a Michelin star Chef's menu, i was expecting alot more. If you want different Indian I would still stick to 1947 or Cassia.

Amazing food! We were happy with everything we ordered. Specially the dessert- Baked gulab jamun creme brulee and crusted saffron mango pannacotta (we ordered it twice)!!

The ambience is really good. The highlights were the mocktails. Food is average - nothing extraordinary. A bit pricey for the quality served.

A brightly lit Indian restaurant without the familiar heavy aromas that plague every other Indian restaurant. An upbeat ambience with excellent service. And can't miss their cocktails, a commendable list plus extra specials that you have to ask for. My favorite, the Sada Adda.
The food... well cooked and seasoned Indian food mixed with a quirky fine dine element and the familiarity of home cooked Indian food. For example, the fish pakoda with chiwda(spiced cornflakes) or the side of kheecha with the lamb and fried kale. And the baked gulab jamun dessert... excellent! Sadly we did not enjoy the main of Prawn Chittinadu.. the quinoa did not seem right or we were just too full by then. Took away a star only cause of this. Will definitely be back. The biggest plus is that the prices are still reasonable.
