the man seems grumpy, but he is very nice actually. the kumara chips seems burnt, but they are not burnt and so yummy actually. price up recently as everywhere else, but I still think this shop is the best fish n chips shop in the area. their deep fried food doesn't smells like ordinary fish n chips shops deep fried food.

The place has been opened for 20 years and I can see why :) Great fish & chips. The oil that was used was not old and that’s important when you have fish and chips :) The owner of the place is who actually cooked and served us - a genuine guy! Would definitely recommend this place and will come back again 👌

This place is great, their burgers are awesome are good sized and are not short with any ingredients. Only been here a couple if times now, but both times have been fantastic. Highly recommend trying them out if you haven't already.

Went on a quiet night. Only customers at the time it looked like they were closed. Service not that great but chips made up for it. Crunchy & well salted. Fish on the expenny side for a takeaway store so had to pass this time round more

I think the other reviews are out dated. The place is nice and clean, the owner is nice as well. Ordered a Giant Burger, 2 snappers and chips and they were all great!

The fish tasted like rubber and the oil used seems to be too old. They even didn't provided enough quantity of chips as per the price was. And the old man, seems to be frustrated and even did not smile who was serving us. Don't recommend this place.

Went to try it out after hearing all about it. Really disappointing. Ordered 3 pieces of snapper and $4 chips. Firstly, the customer service was appalling! We didn't even get a smile out of the guy! <br/>The fish was really oily (and not to mention overpriced!). We ended up throwing the fish away because it seemed old and when we separated the batter from the fish, the fish was mostly a grey color as if it was left in the freezer for years. <br/>The shop was also very unhygienic. The oil buckets below the deep fryer looked like they hadn't been cleaned for years. They were rusty and the oil was also very old and burnt as if it hadn't been changed for a while.<br/>I would not recommend this takeaway shop at all.

Bacon and egg toastie and corn fritters were pretty good.<br/>Potato fritter was lacking in potato, hot dog was average.<br/>Kumera chips were pretty good but portion sizes were way too small for the amount of money. Snapper was alright but not crispy (kinda soggy).<br/>Prices were too high!!

Love Newton Fish and Chippery. The fish portions are large and generous. The batter is crispy and the fish moist. Chips aren't out of this world triple batch cooked but they're good and cheap. Feed yourself well for under $10 here. No hungry pukus.

This place is awful. I always get abit weary when there is no one else in the shop and I found out why when I got home and ate my expensive crumbed Tarakihi fish was disgusting tasted like cardboard, obviously been frozen for years. I will not be visiting this place again.

We are regulars at the Newton Fish & Chippery. The fish is always fresh and of decent size, the chips are never cold, never soggy, never too salty and never over cooked. There can be small variations in portion size but usually pretty standard. Standard-cometetive prices and they never change so you always know what you're going to get. My opinion is you're getting what you pay for. Clean shop.

This place is so disappointing. It is a sad sign of the times that when you want to get your kiwi classic fish n chip on, there are no good, cheap, local fish n chip shops that will do you a decent feed for under $10. Fish n Chips used to be the cheap option didn't it? Now, just like so many things, it is the 'retro-rip-you-off-because-they-can' thing. <br/>The fish is $5 each but they had snapper for $7 each so we tried that, we asked for 'enough chips for two' and she suggested 1 and a half scoops, which came to $18.50. The fish was okaaaay, wasn't floury at least, but the 'batter' was chewy, with no crisp or crunch at all, I can only assume they make it ahead of time and probably freeze it. The 'chips for two' amounted to about one large handful each, I could have easily eaten all of my friends chips and still wanted some more. I was still peckish when I finished. What a rip off. Don't go there, find somewhere else.

We just spent $20 on kumera chips, fish, potato fritters and a spring roll. The serving of kumera chips was absolutely tiny! Less than a handful. The potato fritters are pathetic. For the amount of money we spent, this is pretty disappointing.<br/><br/>Will not be going back.

Most expensive fish and chip shop I've ever been to by far. $5 per fish which were very slightly above average in size, but it wasn't anything special, $3 chips which were about half of what you'd normally expect from a $2 chip serving from other places. <br/><br/>My order of 2 fish, $3 chips and a cheese toasted sandwich ended up a hefty $16.50 which I could have finished all by myself. The photo I took of it makes it look like it should have cost no more than $8. I had no complaints about the food itself; It tasted no better or worse than you'd expect, but paying twice the amount you'd normally expect for the portion I got places this as the absolute worst fish and chip shop I've ever been to, and will not be returning.

We keep coming back here. The chips are normally large, firm and well cooked. Portions are a good size.<br/>The standard fish is tarakihi, which is done well. However, when tarakihi is not available, the substitutes tend not to be so well cooked, or at least a little tired (frozen?).<br/>Lemon wedges are included.<br/>As for the rest, normal take-away. <br/>The place is clean, they actaully answer the phone and have your order ready when they say it will or when you want it ready.
