Review Olaf's Artisan Bakery Cafe - Auckland

h bax
Popped in for a quick brunch while the Rugby World Cup final was on (how very unpatriotic).... Normally this place is cranking, but RWC23 seemed to have kept everyone at home, meant that service was SUPER quick. Cost $65 for 2x brunch meals, 2x coffees and 1x impulse buy cabinet item +Good strong Supreme coffee +Great onsite bakery with fresh artisan breads + Excellent cabinet food. Brunch (Mince on Toast and Eggs Benedict) was good, solid fare; eggs poached perfectly, bacon crispy, mince well-flavoured. Doesn't quite have the X-factor of Crave Cafe brunch, but definitely worth a stop in if you are in Mt Eden and have done Frasers, Circus Circus et al.

Olaf's Artisan Bakery Cafe is a solid choice for a quick and tasty meal. Overall the food was good, although the portions were on the smaller side for the price. As a bakery, I was also a bit disappointed that the meals didn't include more bread. However, these minor issues were easily overlooked due to the overall high quality of the meal. I tried the Gourmet Breakfast and paired it with an oat flat white, both of which were very tasty. The oat flat white, in particular, was creamy and smooth. While Olaf's may not offer the best value for money, the quality of the food and drinks more than make up for it. I would definitely recommend giving this bakery cafe a try and look forward to returning in the future.

I had French toast for breakfast. I was amazing, one of the best things I had to eat for a long time
Saskia Leinberger
Had the eggs benedict with spinach from the menu. Very nice food presentation but unfortunately taste was quite average (had to put on heaps of salt) and portion was rather small for the price which was a bit disappointing. Flat White (with Coffee Supreme) was delicious though, and service was friendly and quick. Also had the rosemary scone and the fig and fennel bread takeaway. Both were super yum.

Busy spot on a Saturday morning but worth the effort. Service was good and we didn't have to wait long for our meals or coffee. Bit of a diy assembly job for the smelt bagel but that's no biggie. Our group of four were all pleased with meals.

Place with relaxing vibe. Employees seem to enjoy being part of place even though it is pretty busy often. Tasty patisserie and bread. Very nice coffee. All in easy going decorative ambience. It is great starting or finishing point for Mt Eden hill with beautiful views over Auckland.

Went in for some poached eggs and iced chocolate while my brother had the gourmet breakfast and iced mocha with shared duck fat wedges. Both meals were delicious and served within a good amount of time. The staff were beyond friendly and very helpful and sweet! I was not quite a fan of the cinnamon in the iced chocolate but it was still enjoyable. Both breakfasts were delightful! We will definitely be coming back here to try the other items on the menu and maybe some cabinet food! Great place to eat and relax :-)

Great coffee and muffin coupled with warm service from wait staff! Huge selection of bread and cabinet food with reasonable :)

Everything was awesome. Truffled mushrooms were amazing. I’ll be back for more!

They have the best blueberry tarts plus these tarts have the most blueberries on top compared to other shops. There is no other cake shop that puts so many blueberries. There are a lot of varieties of bread and dessert to chooses from, their coffee is also very rich in flavour I highly recommend you go visit this place.

I had the most amazing blueberry tart here. The tart itself looks pretty big, but was amazingly easy to consume. The sweetness of the tart was perfect, not overly sweet like the usual tarts you get in NZ. The blueberries were coated in a thin layer of what I could only describe as sweet jelly, which help remove the sourness. The cream was very light and has a smooth consistency, which makes the tart very easy to eat and won't make you feel heavy after eating one. The crust was crispy, but not too crumbly. Everything about this tart was just fantastic! Oh and also tried some of the breads here, they were quite good as well.

If you want a cafe where the staff will learn your name and get to know you, then this is the place you want to go! I’m quite picky when it gets to coffee but these ladies always brew the best. The service is fantastic, always smiling, polite and professional (even when the line is circling around the cafe - they always find a time to say hello). The bread is amazing and I certainly recommend asking them for what goes best with which type of bread. I’ve been going here for over a few years now and have always been delighted with everything. I’ve recommended it to friends and family who’ve all had great times there. P.s. if you’re lucky, and the ladies discover you have a dark sense of humour, then you might get funny things written on your cup, no promises!

So I am as picky as it gets when it comes to my eggs Beni and by the stars I have found my new favourite place! Eggs beni with bacon was perfect! Latte was amazing! Perfect temp perfect flavour all round! Looks like a small Portion but damn is it filling!!!! After we finished breakfast we decided to take away some other items for lunch too! Definitely will be back again!

A great place, great atmosphere, great bread, great coffee, great tea... and a bit of Citroën :)

Always welcoming even at 6am! Coffee is world class. This is one of Auckland best - Mt Eden is the gem of cafes!!

What to do? The menu is great but so is the cabinet food? Want to sample everything!
Sebastian John Papalii-Reece
The food is great and service is good. However when we asked for a side of rye bread we were told they didn't have any. After our meal we saw a half loaf being packed in a bag for one of their staff. I also ordered a sandwich that's usually made with rye and was given another type. Not the end of the world, but disappointing all the same; especially as it markets itself as an artisan bread establishment.
Sylver Cassart
I've been here couple of times and it was great service and good Coffee. Came back after a while, definitely not coming back here anymore, never seen this staff at front house and wasn't polite at all and tried to get rid of me instead of getting my order down. Disappointed from this 10+ experience.
Karina Selvathesan
Terrible terrible service with extremely rude staff !!

Best rye bread thankyou, just ate half a loaf with a french blue brie for (2nd) breakfast, thanks, Pete the paua guy

es ist alles köstlich ! ich komme immer wieder gerne in olaf's artisan bakery cafe !

DELICIOUS espresso! Amazing service, so quick with my breakfast and the BEST Pastel de Natas in the WORLD!

Been there twice & both times the service sucks, too so long & had to follow up to get our food! The food wasn't amazing (yet it's pricey) & staff seem disinterested. In no hurry to return or recommend you guys.

We had lunch here a few days ago and it was very busy, despite this we received impeccable service, by our lovely server, I sadly didn't get her name, but she had gorgeous short red hair and was so attentive and patient with us. Best service I've had in a long time! Food and coffees were great and served very promptly, as we struggled to finish, we were brought takeaway bags without even having to ask. Stellar service, great food, the sweet pastries are a must. Would highly recommend and looking forward to trying more of the menu.

I know it’s Mt. Eden but $6 for a tea is in my opinion an overkill. Otherwise the stuff is really friendly.

Positives • A HUGE fan of the pastries and cabinet food. So moreish and delicious, can’t help but get another as I walk out. Coffee is delicious too.

Negative • Very disappointed with the pancakes though. Very dense and overly sweet. Needs compote or something refreshing and liquified to cut thru that. Never too sure if there is table service. Been here on server almost occasions and the same waitress is the only one who serves (ups to her) - plenty of workers but no table service? 🤔

Coffee - 10/10
Parties - 10/10 🤤😍
Pancakes - 4/10
Service - 5/10

Extremely overrated Cafe. Arrogant and rude staff members (could also see that there was conflict between staff which made my experience extra uncomfortable). The Salmon that goes with the bagel was extremely salty and chicken schnitzel was average at best. My partner and I have always wanted to try this place and now that we have- we won't be returning again.
Tanz
This rating based on my takeaway experience just coffee and danish that I bought. The place looks really nice with lots of choices in cabinets, friendly service and nice open kitchen to see they cook/bake stuff. However I’ve read many reviews raving about how great the coffee was and mine coffee was not good at all. I ordered mocha and all I could taste mostly was milk. $6 for takeaway coffee that wasn’t taste good was way too much to pay. The cherries danish was good at couple first bites but the more I ate, the sweeter from icing around it made it less pleasure to eat. Overall I might go back to try more pastries as they look so good but I don’t think I will pay $6 for coffee there.

The coffee was amazing. I noticed they use supreme coffee bean. Personally i love supreme coffee and its has various flavour notes and decent quality.

Visited yesterday. Nice and relaxed environment but found some of the staff too brashy which disrupted the ambience of the cafe. Nice of them to be outgoing and comfortable in their environment but not at the expense of the customers.

best benes in the village for sure. gorgeous sunny spot to have brekky on a sunday. just a little cramped in the seating arrangement. my only complaint. the best take home breads as well! this coming from an ex-baker.

Visited for the second time with a friend yesterday. I ordered the chicken sandwich and raspberry tart and my friend ordered the pancakes and a coffee. My food was delicious, my friend enjoyed hers too. Highly recommend the tarts- pretty and tasty. Service seemed a little bit flustered/agitated but otherwise great, well worth going to :)
Lila Broome
Such great coffee and service, the staff were all super friendly. But I was rather underwhelmed with the french toast, it lacked a lot of flavour and wasn't the most eye catching. Would love to see a bit of an interior revamp, the chairs seem a bit dated and the blue accents are not the most appealing.
Alice Ma
Lovely cafe! The service is so fast that while I wait for my friend to order (after I've ordered), my coffee already came.
The blueberry pancake was sensational. My eggs bene with salmon was also great. Really enjoyed the brunch here. Highly recommend and I'll come here to try out different food.

great place to come for brunch!

I was recommended this place by a friend and was impressed. friendly staff and fast service.

will be back.

Heard this place was good and I heard right. Came in for a coffee and the place was packed. Really enjoyed their French toast and their hot cross buns were nxt level. Staff were friendly and they have a good menu to choose from for brunch. Keen to purchase their bread and loaves next time!

I absolutely love this place. It’s the only place in Auckland where the bread reminds of bread back in Europe. I also really love their Bola de Berlim (which I already ate so I’m sorry for the no photo). The staff are fantastic, super friendly and always helpful! The food can be a expensive however I think it’s normal relative to other cafes across Auckland. I love their coffee, my favourites are their iced coffees and their hot chocolates with coconut milk (you can really taste that coconut creaminess). Thanks guys!

A bustling cafe with freshly baked bread and other delicious looking goods. We ordered off the menu and got some delicious salmon, quiche and salads: all fresh, and great quality - made with local ingredients. The servings were a generous size, and we left really happy. :)

Nice place, always crowded.
Yoy have to wait because of the amount od people but the attention was really good and the sweet things we bought were too but must say its overprized.

Great place for a Sunday brunch.
Friendly staff quick service, loved the breakfast that was served up.
Great atmosphere all around.
Would be back for some sweet treats.
Would recommend

Been there twice and had a wonderful experience. The place is great, food is superb and the truffle mushroom and sourdough bread is absolutely to die for! Word of advice, if you're planning on doing the full breakfast, don't eat anything the whole day and go there around lunch - fills you up in a good way :) I had a slice of the chocolate roll pastry and it's by far one of the best chocolate cakes I've had! Keep up the great food :)
Sassy Radish
The bread here is authentic and tastes wonderfully fresh and fragrant. Brings me back to the days where my mother cooked fresh bread that was nutrient dense and a dark rye bread. The cabinet food is also very good, a little expensive but an overall great eatery with nice interior. Also one of my fondest memories as we saw Oprah Winfrey when she was visiting New Zealand in Olafs.

Had a really bad experience with this place and wouldn't recommend to others. They wouldn't let us order two sides. We had to order three sides but we didn't want three sides. Not very customer centric. 👎
Sungsam7
Love the husband and wife combo, the interaction between them and staff wonderful to watch. Great coffee, pastries to die for esp the macadamia nut tart! The big breakfast is a winner for him but my fave would have to be the haloumi and zucchini fritters as it’s not doughy
Michelle Chua
The name Olaf itself sounds cute. Reminds me of Frozen. Everything is small and cute. All staff members are friendly and approachable. I personally enjoy what I ordered which is the pancake however portion wise and price is a bit too pricey for me. Don’t get me wrong. It is good but not for me .
The Poor Foodie
Love the croissants! They were so buttery! Blueberry tart and raisin danish were quite sweet so took us a bit of time to finish them.
I also ordered chocofino but it’s not really my thing😂 I found it still a bit too bitter but my friend tried and he said it’s too “chocolate”maybe it’s just not our thing then

Was gonna try the Portuguese tart but we came in the afternoon and it was sold out :( will come next time definitely to try it!

Felt a little upset about the cleanliness though... as you can see, a lot of the baked goods or tarts have syrups or jam or whatever and some of them must have left on the edges of the table...
I realised my sleeves were covered with sticky jam in the middle of my lunch 😢
Magoo
Bit of a wait, but was totally worth it. Ordered eggs Benedict bacon with my friend. Only issue was the sourdough being tough and the crust was rock hard. Loved that they make there own breads and the staff were very knowledgeable

Headed here over Easter weekend. It was quite crowded as it was the few places open. However they did charge a surcharge being a Public Holiday.

We came in for Hot Cross Buns and coffee. The hot cross buns were beautiful. Not overly sweetly but definitely gave you that warm fuzzy festive feeling.

As for the coffee - they use Supreme Beans. It was pretty decent.

1 hr WiFi is offered here. Head over to the counter to get a passcode.
My second time here for a brunch. The food is okay but the side hash brown I ordered has no flavour. I asked the waitress for some ketchup yet she responded me in a rather indifferent tone, "our cafe doesn't give out condiments to customers". I have been to quite a few cafes for brunch and never have I encountered this and get rejected for getting some ketchup. Disappointed! Plus it is not my fault that your hash brown is flavourless. Even so, can you at least approach this in a nice way? I remained silent and she said she would have a look but she never came back with any updated information. The food is expensive but I am not getting the proper service. Won't come back again!

Went to Olaf's for lunch today for the first time. Ordered two hot cross buns and a gourmet breakfast. Hot cross buns were fresh from the oven, texture of bun was loose. Gourmet breakfast mushrooms were amazing, tender and juicy. Sausage had a herby spice flavour to it. Bacon was extremely crispy but surprisingly not burnt. Tomatoes were still very juicy from the inside. Egg Benedict was the perfect size to one bite the whole egg. The yolk was runny and at it's finest texture. Baked beans were a bit big but sauce was good. Hashbrowns were crispy on the outside. Would come again to try their tarts!

Came here on a Sunday for lunch. Thank god I made reservations because it was really busy and that’s probably what triggered the little lack in service and we had to keep asking for water refills. However, it was still an enjoyable lunch.

Between 2 we ordered the Piri Piri chicken livers, Vienna schnitzel, and the macadamia tarte.
The chicken livers wasn’t that spicy and they took the curry-like style and added onto the dish. The bread adds the necessary crunch to the dish as it balances out the soft, yet tasty livers. The salad adds the refreshing sour taste that would kick start the experience.
The chicken schnitzel wasn’t very good because all the light flavors were in the thick breadcrumbs. Even though the chicken was soft and easy to chew, there wasn’t much flavor to it (she had to add salt and pepper even with the breadcrumbs).
The macadamia tarte saved the day with its apparent sweetness though.

Taste - 8/10
Price - 7/10
Size - 7/10
Service - 7/10

Came here for Sunday lunch with a friend.
It’s always been a bustling cafe so decided to finally come visit!

I got the Vienna Schnitzel and a Macadamia Tart while my friend got the Peri Peri Chicken Liver.

Food comes out fast. The schnitzel lacked seasoning but the veal meat was cooked nicely and tender. The potato salad at the bottom was nicely dressed but perhaps too much potato for my personal preference; needed something else to lift the entire dish up.
I tried some of the chicken liver which was flavoursome and nicely spiced, especially when paired with the toasted vinscgauer bread!

The macadamia tart was good! Unsweet but gives you all the crunch and crumbs. A good way to finish the meal.

Service was lacking, we had to keep asking to fill our cups and not much attention given. Also a bit dim for my liking, would prefer some interior lighting.

Altogether it set us back by $50.10.

Food: 7/10
Price: 7/10
Ambience: 7/10
Service: 7/10

This place gets a 5 simply because the young woman managing the day we popped in was absolutely amazing. Truly astounding knowledge of her products, articulate and generous with her attention and flexible with filling our requirements. Superb bread too btw.

There was a buzz in the air with the cafe at 70% full. You get the feeling that they are locals enjoying their happy place in this high ceiling cafe. You can buy freshly baked loaves at the entrance with the inhouse bakery behind glass at the back. I would have loved to watch the bakers at work if i have arrived at breakfast time. The women staff were efficient and friendly. I was really impressed with the perfectly poached eggs with my halomi zuchinni fritters. Our party also had the big breakfasts, mushroom risottos, quiche and cabinet sandwiches. The dishes had promised with their nice presentations. We discussed our table score of 3 and wondered what could have been done to get a higher score.... it all comes down to taste as Olafs have got everything else right. Our mushroom lover expected more mushroom in the risotto. The big breakfast looked magnificent but the chips could have been cooked to a crunch and this dish had lots of mushrooms which was shared with the risotto dish. My salad needed a dressing and the lovely fritters were dry. I love the squeak of the halomi but did not taste it mixed in the fritters! I love the idea of using their own fresh bread in the dishes and sandwiches. If the cafe is reading this review, i would like to know if this is useful? Should we have discussed this with you at the time or wrote a letter directly to you?

I love mushroooms the best:) it was really good to have a brunch on new year day:) pancake was pretty :) egg Benedict was bit fish. But i love coffee and bread . Bought Gold medal rewards bread :)

Good service and nice ambiance. Just a tad pricey for a salmon eggs benny. The bread was way too tough to cut with their knife. It tasted great though!

I was incredibly disappointed today, having been here several times before. While the staff were friendly, they had two different menus so I asked which one to order off and then they brought me something different and made excuses for why that happened. The manager who was about 3m away did not bother to come and apologise. They did refund the money for my section of the brunch.
Rob
The pastry chef is Portuguese so there's a few Portuguese items in the cabinet. Including pasteis de natas (Portuguese custard/ egg tarts) which are really are really good and would typically be found everywhere in Portugal.

Amazing breakfast menu. Loved the gourmet breakfast and coffee ;) would go again. Great for Sunday brunches or catching up with friends.

Great service.People are very welcoming here and the food range and s great.Food looks very nice as well.Olafs have nice bread and nice coffee too!

The food was, I believe overpriced. My pancake was quiet small for the price. We paid $100 for 2 adults and 2 kids. We won't be coming back here again.
Sid
Lovely staff, and great service . The food was average to eat, but looked beautiful in pictures. A little on the pricier side, since it is my Edan village. The cafe is very clean, and a nice environment to eat in. Defs will go again.

Went there for breakfast on a Sunday. Great atmosphere, nice location. We ordered fresh orange and ginger juice which was so good. Scrambled eggs were cooked to perfection, Gourmet breakfast came with mushrooms, hash brown, tomatoes, bacon and sausage, along with eggs and sourdough bread which was so fresh, and everything tasted good! Highly recommended!

We had coffee here. Sitting outside on tables and chairs on the pavement. What a lovely sunny day and great sunny aspect. The people walking by made the scene. Prices were competitive. The service was great with a friendly smile. We didn't order much.. but that didn't seem to matter. Nice place. 👍🏻 it's a real pity some smoker stuffed my nice experience. Disgusting
Christine Yeh
Have to say I'm not a fan of this place. Overpriced and unpalatable food, inattentive and unhelpful staff and watered down coffee.
I am sorry that I did not have the greatest experience here. This place could really work on customer service.
Angel Deng Yun
I made my own bread, by hand. So I know how much efforts you need to put into making a dough, fermeuntate it, prove it, bake it and leave it cool to the best status ready for you to enjoy.

So I respect Olaf's artisan bread and the whole experience he put into it for offering the best bread in Auckland.

It is well-known that in the morning time Olaf is always bustling and packed with customers shopping for their daily bread. I prefer to come here for a late lunch. Love the sourdough, ciabatta and the chewing fig bread. They are all just perfect.

Or if you have some sweet tooth, do not avoid the desserts in the cabinet. Macadamia tart, blueberry tart, raspberry tart and a little cute barquinho de coco(which is a Portuguese snack, full of coconut flavor) nice pair with a proper flat white.

All the menu is inspired with Middle East and Southern Europe flavor. It looks like quite a delight for the your tastebud exploration.

Thanks to Olaf, we could get to know the perfect bread in this city.
AA
A German Cafe ran by the Germans, serving german cakes and german bread, made by German hands and German machines, serving delicacies with German quality and German precision cutting 😂 (I'm just talking nonsense here #Germans #butitspartlytrue).
My German tutor often organises a gathering here and after all this time, I finally gave it a shot during the weekend. Had an orange cake and chocolate cake. You could feel the difference at the first bite. You could feel 'real' orange taste and strong chocolate flavour in these cakes - unlike other cafes where the orange cake was usually made with 'artificially-syrup-taste' orange flavouring with colouring.
Price range was within your typical cafe pricing. Ranges about 4 to 7ish for a slice of cake.
The waitress was also very thoughtful to serve us tap water - something I would say is a plus plus plus for the rating (good customer service skills)

Overall, good hangout location during the weekend to enjoy German cakes and bread.

Olaf's scores 5/5 for me every time. Coffee is amazing whatever way you drink it , and the food is divine. Would rate 5/5 in a heartbeat everyone.
Dondon3000
I rate this place. Food might be a bit pricy but the quality is good. Home made breads with no preservatives long fermentation. It's good and your can eat a lot without bloating. It's usually the preservative in the breads that make you bloat. FYI.

I got this chocolate and beetroot cake and a long black. Supreme coffee made well. The sandwiches are epic again pricy but the quality and the amount of filling you get is massive. Try the pulled lamb on turmeric ciabatta, or the roast chicken roll.

Fig and fennel bread to take home served with some blue cheese mmmmmm. They seriously have one of the best breads into. Thanks olaf I hope you branch off to another city closer to me!
Steph
Had the most delicious banana smoothie I've ever had here. Beautiful ambience, helpful staff. Everything just runs exactly how you'd want it to in a cafe! Good for a proper meal or for some top of the range cabinet food, fresh bread and coffee.

Will be bringing family and friends here for sure!
Vinmanrules
The omelette I ordered was delicious, one of the best one had. But the service is average and the prices are ridiculous! I cannot agree that there is any value for your money being provided here. The food is good, but the prices seem to sting. I got the feeling they charge so much just because they can.
Lissy Fehnker
What a shame. The food is really good quality.. but.
Walk in, sit down. No one comes to explain that it isn't table service so we get our own menu and go and order. I ask for just one toast and one egg, they try to charge me $17. I say that's way too expensive. End up paying $9. Much better! My friend ordered a big breakfast. After awhile of waiting, we get our food and it is all just below warm. We eat anyway. He pays $35 for breakfast and tea. I pay $25 for juice and one egg and toast. (Public holiday surcharge too 25%!!)

It's just quite pricey. However the food is good (when it comes hot). Service could also do with a bit of improvement.
Gunjan
I would say it is just ok not too great. Went for lunch today, I ordered a vegetarian sandwich and tuna olive sandwich from the counter. I would say sandwiches were just average. The breads are great but food is not worth the price.

Disha
I might change that to a 4/4.5 after my next visit. Reason being I am yet to try their tarts and other gorgeous desserts that are laid out in their shelf just when you walk in.
We went there for a all girls brunch and I absolutely fell in love with he vibe of the place. It's fresh and chirpy perfect for a cafe with a twist. My Flat White was by far one of the best I have had in NZ and I have had my fair share bit of flat whites. The mushrooms on toast takes the cake, its a must have like you have to order this to know what I am talking about.
The grilled chicken from Lunch menu was unfortunately a disappointment that's why my rate is 3, though it looked like a dream but chicken was dry and dish itself didn't have much flavour. The place is so busy and the servers are hardly at rest which can be slightly disturbing. Cause it is so busy, the orders do take a while to come to the table which we didn't mind but if I go another time I wouldn't like to wait for so long. I am going to go again just to try the shelf items and maybe their shakes.
Khloe
This cafe is always busy depite quite spacious inside. Their cakes and coffee are one of the best in my opinion. Also well known for their homemade breads. This place is one of our go-to cafe for sunday brunch.
Lulu
Went here around noon on a Saturday but we could still order breakfast. The place was buzzing. It was a bit unclear what to do if you were dining in (do we take a seat? Do we order first?) specially since the place was so crowded. My friend ordered an eggs benedict, and I had the blueberry pancake. We made a mistake on the eggs benedict order, and they were happy to help us out after the server initially said no - thank you! The blueberry pancake was simply delicious. The 'pancake' was fat in the middle... Texture was more of a muffin mix than pancake, full of blueberries inside and out. This was finished off with a dollop of sour cream with a garnish of orange peel and mint. It was yummy and filling. My friend loved the eggs benny too.
Nidhi
Cute little place, gets very crowded. We were lucky enough to get a table quite fast, we had to wait a while for someone to come and take an order. In the end we had to go to the counter and order (maybe that's how it works there?). While we waited for a friend to we ordered our drinks and a Danish to share. I'm not particularly a Danish kind of person, but this was gggoooooddd. It was a pretty decent size aswel. I ordered the gourmet breakfast which was average (sounded better on the menu). My sister ordered the creamy mushroom on bread and our friend the pancake. Both were delicious. The pancake was light and not all that sweet and the creamy mushroom was light too with some simple flavours. Over all I would definitely go there again to try other things on their menu.
Bhavya
Very friendly staff, and quite fast service too. I ordered the creamy mushroom on toast, and it was DELISH! My friend ordered the blueberry pancake with banana and bacon - also yummy. Will definitely go back again
Sophia
The food at Olaf's is always outstanding, every ingredient is added with care and consideration, so each bite is a real treat. Their selection of breads, sweets, sandwiches and salads are always tempting, and their menu never disappoints. It is very pricey - last week we paid $20+ for one sandwich and a small tart, but we loved every bite!
Carolyn Le Mon
The breakfast at Olaf's is wonderful. We turned up very early on a Sunday, managed to avoid the brunch crush, and were treated to perfectly poached eggs with the tastiest home made hollandaise, on lovely sour dough with hash browns that were anything but boring and perfectly crispy bacon and properly slow roasted tomatoes. The chocolate ganache mocha we washed it down with was a trifle too creamy for me, but my husband loved it. The only advice I have is to go very early to have a peaceful and delicious first meal of the day.

One of our fav. weekend brunch place in Mt.Eden. Price is on the steeper side but worth it. Their portugese tart is to die for. Big brekkie is full of artisan goodness. They bake their own bread. Fritata is nice and comes with salad. Coffee pretty good too. They can get super busy though and place also cramped.
Kirsten
Mt Eden is where the coffee culture is at! As my friend and I walked in, the staff welcomed us in a friendly manner. We took quite a long time to order since we couldn't decide, so I appreciated the staff's patience. I ordered a regular cappuccino and their almond croissant, while my friend ordered a large cappuccino and the Copenhagener. The almond croissant was so crunchy and the texture of the croissant was soft, even though it was heated up. Their coffee was really nice, right amount of foam and not watery. I love strong coffee, it definitely boosted my energy. I would recommend their almond croissant, as it'll be a great combination with a cuppa coffee! Their baked pastries is no joke! Great way to start off my "cafe to-go-to" bucket list and enjoy my afternoon on a rainy day.

This cafe is always packed every time I walk past or want to go in for lunch. Finally got a chance to try out this place.

Service is ok. Didn't get greeted when I walked in but that's ok I guess coz my cousin had already got seat a there. But otherwise the staff there were quite friendly.

I ordered the gourmet breakfast cos I was so hungry and a raspberry smoothie. The gourmet breakfast was average. The hash brown was really nice though. A bit oily but it tasted delicious. Think it was homemade -thought it was a little bit on the pricey side though $25.50 but that's probably cos of their (artisan) bread(?) and the free range bacon and eggs. The smoothie had a real subtle raspberry flavour to it. On the menu oh said it had "ricotta and milk" in it, which was interesting. It had a lumpy texture to it -was a bit weird but that's not to say it wasn't good. Felt pretty healthy though 🤔

This place is amazing - every single thing in the cabinet will probably be one of the best things you've ever eaten, particularly the tarts and the orange cake.

The plated food is great too - I've had the lamb and the chicken, would recommend both.
Sabrina Chae
They serve the best tarts!! Their fruit tarts are a must! It's hard to find places that serve this generous amount of fruits in their fruit tarts. However, these do tend to get sold out quite early (I don't blame them, it's THAT good)

Great little spot tucked away off Mt Eden Road.

These guys are big on making there own breads and the rolls, bloody amazing! I had the pulled lamb should in a fancy yellow sourdough roll - Food Porn!!!!!

Absolutely terrible service. My burger was raw and when I asked for it to be fixed they picked it up without saying a word. They then recooked the same patty and put it back on the table, again without a word. Never going again.

New fav alert! Being a relatively new addition to the Mt Eden Village is the excuse I am giving for not having been here earlier. It's a little off to the corner of the main street, also. However, now that I have found you, Olaf's artisan bakery cafe, open 7 days (yay!), I will be stopping by regularly.

One of the better mochas I've tried. The breads are quite good too, we got one that was served warm with butter and cheese. Will definitely come for a proper meal in the future

Heard from almost anyone on the zomato scene that this place was a knockout - I see where they're coming from but I can't whole heartedly agree 😴. The service was shy?? And lacked the wow factor. I loved the aesthetics of the cafe though and it smelt gorgeous with the fresh bread being made from the kitchen. The food was pretty decent but felt as if I could have made it at home with the right ingredients ✌🏻️

We arrived for lunch on ANZAC day and ordered some lunch. They were steady but not busy. I was shocked at the price that 2 meals and 2 smoothies came too. And then realised they had a surcharge. I asked for a bottle of water for the table. Then had to go chase them twice to get the water to the table. The food eventually came out and the portions were TINY. It was a definitely a plate for your eyes not your stomach. Sort of two or three bites and its gone. And my chicken was dry. The smoothies never came out with the meals and once again i had to go in and chase them. So its a great little cafe if you want to get ripped off.

I was very underwhelmed by Olaf's. My pizza was cold and a bit average. Redeeming factor is the selection of bread and pastries. Think I ordered wrong. I'll be back for the almond pain au chocolate!

Came here the other day for lunch with a friend. I got the roast chicken sandwhich with a blueberry smoothie. The sandwhich was delicious and they were very generous with the chicken and the smoothie was super refreshing since it was so hot that day. I enjoyed my time there :)

This used to be my one stop shop whenever I was in mount Eden village, their little tartlets are to die for. Everything here is amazing. Gets quite busy from time to time and my last visit I was in a by of a rush and they completely forgot my friends order but they apologised and made it ASAP. Everything is delicious, although some would say a little pricey.

This place is always packed on a weekend! So I came on a weekday for breakfast instead.

Since they bake their own bread, I ordered a savoury brioche and a cappuccino. The brioche was light and fluffy but I was disappointed with the fillings. Was supposed to have mushroom, cheese but it was non existence.

Friend had a porridge which was served in a fancy board but looked ordinary for the price paid.

My cappuccino was well done though, it was frothy goodness and also had shaved dark chocolate toppings instead of the usual choc powder. Yummy!

Other than that, service was really friendly.

This is my 'must stop' when I pass by Epsom/Mt Eden, love the sourdough. There are also different kinds of sweet pastry, perfect with an Americano!

After hearing so much about this place finally paid a visit
Both dishes were superb but found them a bit pricey for portions.
Couldn't resist one of their tarts so had to try one. It was good but I think it looked better than it tasted
Will come again :)

Been here in the past and the food was at a excellent standard. Came here yesterday with high expectations and left feeling disappointed. As everyone has already said, food is overpriced and if you get anything from the cabinet, they seem to skimp on the portions. I ordered a salad for $14.50 and received a starter size. Furthermore they added goats cheese which not everyone likes. They should of made note of this or added feta cheese instead. I also ordered the expresso cake. In the past it was light and fluffy. Yesterday, it was dry and the bottom of the cake was hard as rock. I believe it could have been prepared the night before and left in tbe fridge? Or the new chef doesn't know how to bake. The service wasnt great either, all staff were generally looking unpleasant. My friend and i walked in with noone greeting us even though several waitresses saw us sit down. We had to get our own menus and water. I witnessed several patrons come in and all the waitresses and old lady manager talking to each other behind the counter gass bagging - very unprofessional. As a manager would be nice to crack a smile once in a while. Overall this place is dropping standards very quickly and you can tell by recent ratings. I will not be returning to this cafe.

They are passionate about breads and pastry here, and thats the unique thing about this cafe. They have a large glass window where you can watch the bread maker in action-fascinating The service is fantastic, and they make great coffee. Recommended for its great coffee and service.
Coffee4two
The toasted sandwich was nothing to write home about; but the custard pastry was rich and generous in size-plus we had great coffee along with excellent service, hence the rating. Even though the store was busy, the service was more than helpful and friendly, and we had great coffee which is what we came for today :)
Penguin93
Food here gets pretty pricey. Their food out of the kitchen isn't fantastic either, had an omelette that was very oily. Their baked bread is really the only thing that I would get from here.
L
Experience the worst customer service at this place. The old manager lady was very rude and have no concept of putting customers first. Very disappointing experience.
Christian
Went in with high expectations given the reputation and the fact that olafs bread is used by many fine restaurants.

Chose to have breakfast - bacon was dark of colour and chewy like rubber. It reminded me of the bacon served in bain maries at cheap buffets. Scrambled eggs were fine. Their 'hash browns' were woeful. Soggy cake-like and dripping in oil. Tasted like that they were cooked the day before and heated in a microwave.

Another criticism was the absence of ice in the drinks.

Nice bread and pastries though. Best stick to them I suggest.
I had late lunch at this place today. I couldnt find anything tempting on the menu, so I had to grab something from the cabinet. I had chicken sandwich, cinamon roll and strawberry tart. Foods were not that good. Coffee was okay. Service was slow considering we had cabinet food. I assume that serving foods out of cabinet is not that time consuming job.
Nz_pasta
This cafe was named top 50 cafes by Metro so was quite looking forward to eating there. Ordered prosciutto pizza and it wasn't that great. Tried their Cesar salad only to find the portion size was so small - had a few quarters of eggs with dried up greens with shaved parmesan - hardly justified by price of $15. The latte was OK and the service was better than the food. The bathroom was not as clean.
Jeania Leung
Will never come back again!!! Service was really bad. I had to wait more than half an hour for just a sandwich which was already made in the cabinet!!! Seriously ridiculous!!!!
Donna&Shane
I come here now and again just for the bread especially the fig/fennel loaf.. Yum. This time I was able to try the breakfast... I wasn't overly hungry so I tried the crumpet with the blueberries & ice cream... It was small but really nice... The spinach eggs benedict was nice too... Nice smoothie and iced tea... Cabinet food is nice although the filled rolls aren't really for takeaway as they need to be toasted... Service was ok.
Richard J
Have been here a few times but must admit 32 dollars for two skimpily filled sandwiches is getting pricey. The staff here have issues we had to wrestle with a waitress to keep enough plates to eat and the other girl taking orders was panicked by having a line of two customers .
Shannon T
I've been here a few times as its in my local village. Their selection of edible morsels is terrible - and by terrible I mean you cannot choose just one thing to eat! They've covered their sweet and savoury bases so well but I usually go for sweet (the tarts are amaze). Great coffee, good vibes and friendly service!

Was my friend and I's first time visiting and we were unaware that the kitchen was closed at the time we went (was around 3pm). We totally understood and decided to get something from the cabinet and a glass of spirulina each. Price was way over-priced for the portions received (from the top of my memory it was $4 for the small glass of spirulina that's sold in the markets, and $14.50 for a very small slice of quiche that comes with some greens and chow chow chutney). The staff member at the counter seemed to be quite unprofessional asking the people in front of us, us, and the person behind us, at each separate times we were being served, if we were all together just because we were the same race. I guess this is somewhat understandable as she seemed fairly new. However the other staff member who did seem pretty experienced, was not any better with her inadequate customer service. Looking unimpressed, no replies when have said thank you at least 2-3 times, and just overall providing a very unpleasant experience for us. We were super disappointed as we had heard good things about the cafe, but we'll probably never be returning.
Sarah Parke
Nice selection of sweets and savory dishes. The place is quite cramped so if you don't like having a chat to your neighbors, this place isn't for you. We really enjoyed our little treats and the staff were nice and friendly. #gidschallenge

Olaf's is a bakery and cafe located in the heart of Mt Eden village. The cafe has a unique charm to it as you can see the kitchen from the cafe. We ordered coffees, the scrambled eggs, a mixed salad and a milk chocolate tart. Everything was nicely presented and the staff were also super friendly. All the food tasted really good and coffee very well made. The cabinets were generously stocked with other tarts, cakes and pastries which we will definitely try next time! Highly recommended!

I came here for breakfast with my sister, trying to branch out from our usual Eden village option.

The first thing I noticed was the price of the food. The big breakfast was around $25, and eggs benedict with salmon was over $20. I don't expect food to be free but those prices seemed quite expensive compared to other similar cafes.

I ordered scrambled eggs w parsley on sourdough, with a side of hashbrowns. I prefer my scrambled eggs to be creamy however these seemed quite overcooked and "hard", however that's just my personal preference. The let down was the hashbrowns. There was a bitterness to them that overpowered the potato - the whole reason for hashbrowns in my opinion. The staff member who came to take our plates asked how I'd found the hashbrowns as they are currently testing out their recipe so I appreciated the opportunity to feed back.

The service was good and the fit out is nice, the sweet pastries in the cabinet look amazing, unfortunately I really felt that the menu food that we had was overpriced for what it was.
The One With A Nut Allergy...
Great variety - I loved that I could get some Portuguese delights such as natas, French pastries, and a great range of bread was made available. There is also a range of meals in the brunch menu. Happy overall with what I ordered- don't think you can really mess up scrambled eggs and sourdough toast! So will possibly come back to try more dishes on the menu...

Service wise--don't expect too much. We arrived at an empty table being cleaned by a waitress on a busy morning--waiting for her to clean it off; she cleaned part of it off but never came back--took aboput 15 minutes until we called a waiter to clean off the table. Additionally, I went to order at the counter and when I asked about a pastry having nuts and asking her to check she appeared a bit stressed about it and claimed it was so busy she didn't have time to ask at that moment, so I ordered something 'safe'.

Environment: 5/10 - service was a let down
Taste: 6/10
Peanut-Nut Friendliness: Hmmmmm.....? Not this morning...

I had read raving reviews in the Metro magazine so I had to this cafe out. Stopped here for lunch and it did not disappoint. We ordered the beef burger with roast potatoes and the piri piri chicken dish. The sauces on both dishes were divine.
Cosy interior also. I recommend that the cafe should hang all their awards at the front of the cafe rather than on back wall.
Jess
Olafs has a good variety of bakery products and breakfast options. The breakfasts are really tasty and served with their home made sourdough. Although the food was good, I feel it was slightly expensive for what it was.
Priscilla Chew
Freshly baked breads in a comfortable and cosy cafe environment, there isn't much more that you could ask for - than a visit to this cafe. That is, if you can get a seat during brunch or afternoon tea time, though!

The breads are definitely chewy and have plenty of texture, which is the hallmark of a good bread. When toasted, they taste just as scrumptious too. But if you don't feel like sandwich, there are other baked goodies, such as the vegetarian quiche - which my companion really enjoyed.

For desserts, I personally like the chocolate tart, as i am a huge fan of chocolatey stuff. The chocolate flavoured pastry adds an interesting zing to the chocolate tart too. #Challenge
Two Dark Coffees
With an award winning bakery right behind the table you sit at, Olaf's European style breads are as fresh as they get.

A simple glass window separates you and the ovens that have baked your sandwich slices.

Housing a menu that is fill of gourmet brunch options and sweet pastry delights, there's something for everyone here.

The smell of freshly ground Supreme Coffee intwines with the smell of newly baked bread and sets your stomach wild for deliciousness.

Well known for its sweet treats, I would recommend trying out Olaf's soft cinnamon brioche - maybe warmed up a bit too for those colder mornings.

Arriving late afternoon we ordered the fruit and honey platter, a champagne ham and cheese roll (halved), a half serving of the roasted vegetables and two flat whites.

The fruit and honey platter came with seasonal fruits and a berry sorbet arranged on a wooden board. I was impressed with the presentation but the one critic would be although having a natural honeycomb is idyllic it's not very practical.

Olaf's is losing a point from me as I find the waiters and waitresses to be slightly lacking. Lacking in friendly hospitality and basic skill. In the few times I have visited Olaf's I have witnessed staff dropping orders or cutlery. As a waiter myself I understand these things happen, but not being able to balance an iced coffee on a tray makes the cafe look novice.

Other than that, Mt Eden is lucky to have Olaf's as their own and I'll definitely be making the trip back.

Sarah Reynolds #challenge

Fabulous food. Always really yummy! But don't expect service. I stood at the counter u acknowledged with the staff standing directly in front of me while she complained about another staff member. I just wanted to be served. Not uncommon to wait to be served at the counter queue while staff catch up with their friends. Do really enjoy the food though!
Lily Stelling
I'd always wanted to come here! The mocha was beautiful, however my cranberry granola tasted really strange - I think they used salted peanuts so it was quite disappointing, however I almost completely forgot about this because of their insanely good baking - the bread, the pastries, cakes and tarts, I couldn't even decide what to pick it all looked so good! Truly one of the best bakers you'll find
Gentlepig
If you want a seat, better make it a breakfast rather than a brunch. A tad on the pricy side but that's what you'd expect from a great cafe at this location. The food is very well executed - being so busy and with so many staff, it's impressive how consistent how well each dish is delivered. Olaf's excellence shines through, and for those whom are out to search for a great sourdough - you'll find it here amongst other breads you may not have heard of before (they're all good though!). The coffee is less spectacular, but the environment is very comfortable indeed for those warm weekend afternoons.
Temptation Cakes Auckland
Great food love how you can see in to the kitchen as I used to be a chef I miss it at times the meals are lovely and cakes are to die for well done guys you rock

I visited for brunch, and being a pancake fan went for the spelt pancakes with berry compote. The pancakes were great - light and fluffy without being stodgy, and plenty of berry compote, cream and maple syrup to dress them up. The butterscotch was maybe overkill with sweet condiments, and I didn't go out of my way to get it off the plate onto my pancakes. The side of bacon was mediocre - not crispy, just tough.

A lengthy chat meant I also needed to try their tempting cabinet food, and was very pleased with an apricot danish.

Downside would be price - $7 for the bacon side and a 15% public holiday surcharge turned my pancakes and hot chocolate (the large being what I'd call a medium anywhere else) into a $35 outing which is pricey for brunch without being so fantastic or unique I felt it justified the cost.

My sister had their eggs on toast and it was just cooked to perfection!! It's a simple dish but you can never go wrong with ordering the basics at Olaf's! Worth going if you're around the area :)
Keri
The hot chocolate and coffee there was amazing. Creamy and tasty. But I found the food there overly priced even though there was nothing really special to it. Just over priced average food. For the price I paid for getting a drink and a sandwhich I could have brought a decent meal at some asian restaurant.

I got the pulled lamb shoulder sandwich from the cabinet and it tasted like something I could make at home myself just by constructing a pulled lamb and a bread together. There really wasn't that "Wow" factor many cafes in Auckland have these days. Half way through the sandwich I was bored with the taste of it I didn't finish it.

Service was quick and friendly but for the price you pay there was better cafes you can go to with equal amount if great service.
Khoa Le
Absolutely delicious food and coffee. It's nice to see the bakery on the side where you can see your bread being made fresh... The pricing is only a tad more expensive than other cafe but it is worth it. Every time I've been there however I've always had to wait at least 10 minutes for a table because they are so popular.

The service is always fine there for me. They give ou a table as soon as possible and I've always had a pleasant experience with the staff. Very informative, warm and polite.
Mandy
I asked for a triple shot large flat white to go. NOT a scorching hot burnt flat white. Maybe you should just stick to baking bread...

COMPLIMENTARY LOAF OF BREAD FOR THE ROAD

Hospitality is about service, and Olaf has it!
Our waitress was just amazing. She was warm, knowledgable and a "bread" of fresh air.

Olaf is tucked away from the main strip of Mt Eden. I kinda like it that way as part of me wants to keep this place all to myself. At night the lighting sets a romantic mood and the atmosphere inside is warm and cosy. If you happen to be outside they ensure you're kept toasty by supplying you with blankets! They are such good guys even your K9 pals get looked after. Water bowls are provided for your fluffy fur child.

Gentle sounds like Bon Iver will tickle your ears as you converse with your friends. The food being served on neighbouring tables will make you wish you had a bigger stomach so you could try it all. Tonight there was only room for an antipasto platter, chocolate mousse, and coffees. I cannot wait to return and tuck into the Middle Eastern influenced part of the menu!

We were the last ones to leave tonight and as we were fixing the bill we were offered a complimentary loaf of bread EACH to take home. *Happy Dance*

We were sad to learn Olaf will no longer open for dinner during the winter months but were pleased to find out we had caught it on the last night that it was! I will return and when I do I plan to fill myself with everything. Pizza, Fattoush, Muhalleibi, Homemade Ice tea... the list goes on and on!!!

Went here for breakfast. I had salads from the cabinet (can choose upto 3 different flavours). Must try grain salad and baked vege salad, very delicious! I also had tuna sandwich. Bread was very nice and tuna was full inside the bread. Had dessert with blueberry tart and flat white. Blueberry was very fresh even though blueberry season is over. Nice and cozy place!

Had a brunch there at 11.20, was amazed how packed this place was! My family had our best macadamia nut tart ever, and my mum simply enjoyed the almond croissant which was served warm with pleasant aroma. Will try out dinner here next time

This cafe/restaurant has a really nice interior. The New York Cheesecake was yummy and the service was pleasant. There is also a decent selection of interesting breads. Would recommend for a lunch out with friends or to take away some bread.

Had an afternoon catch up here with a friend and it's a delightful gem!! I ordered the savoury brioche which was mouthwatering with onion and olive tapenade filling. We sat next to the open kitchen which is a lovely feature and filled the café with tempting aroma. Can't wait to try the sweet pastries next time!

While having a little look around Mt Eden and not really hungry but curious, I set upon looking at all the cafes in Mt. Eden to keep in mind for the next time I was in the area. Olaf's isn't in the main strip of Mt. Eden Road but I had to have a peek in and see what they had to offer. I was impressed by their offerings and couldn't help myself so got the raspberry tart and a coffee. They use Supreme coffee and the barista was quick and efficient and was the perfect consistency and flavour. The raspberry tart was just divine. The base was nice and crispy and the combination of tart and sweet made for a delightful treat. Service was amazing. Friendly and chatty made for a really nice experience in the cafe.

I would definitely have to come back and try their other dishes. I hope the rest of it was as good as the sweets and coffee I had!
Monica
Olaf's offers seemingly overpriced artisan goods, with poor return. The pain au levain; $15.50 consisted of one piece of tasty but hand-crushingly hard sourdough, a creative beetroot relish, dry bacon and an excess dollop of cream cheese. Overall the combination was actually quite a good mix of flavours, however the flaws of the individual components made the meal quite average. My companion also noted her omelette was much too salty. The service followed on par; with cutlery forgotten and a dish cleared prematurely. With a comfortable but rather monotonous interior, there's room for improvement at this Mt Eden establishment.
Wouldyoulikebreadwithyourbutter
Everything you expect an ordinary brunch to be. Classic menu and cooked well. We ordered the eggs Benedict with hollandaise on the side, and the big breakfast and both were perfect. The big breakfast could really feed two or one big eater. It even comes with two different types of their specialty bread

Takeaway sandwiches were good too. We had a lamb on cumin bread and egg salad. The lamb was a little intense after a while and I would have been happier if it was on a less herb & spiced bread.

Coffee was above average.. Milk is not as velvety as some other places
Ambience is nice and unpretentious but I would prefer table service rather than ordering at the counter.. I would expect that for the price

Cabinet food was enticing and inviting.. Now I need to return to try this amazing looking sponge cake wrapped in meringue. I will no doubt be back. Why bother going to Frasers when you have this place across the road?

Been here twice in the last 2 months. Ordered an eggs benedict the first time and did not enjoy it at all. Found out I really don't like sourdough...

Ordered a potato salad here on the second visit, and absolutely loved it! It was a very decent portion and the price paid. The potatoes were perfect and full of flavour.

I've heard of so many positive reviews about this bakery, so first time checking in to see what's this all about.

This is not located on the main road, so finding a car park is not as painful. And very fortunate, we managed to secure a large table for a big group of us on a public holiday! After glancing thru each items on the menu, I've decided to try one of their mains not related to their famous bakery goodies - FUNGHI CON PANCETTA.

A generous amount of mushrooms, deep fried pancetta and hushbrown like gnocchi di pane dusted with parmesan cheese. If you're a savoury trooper like myself, you'll still find it a lil salty after completing the dish! In saying that though, the flavour of each ingredients worked so well in harmony, I just wanted to keep on taking the next bite...and sipping their homemade blackcurrent ginger ice tea!

If you fancy their desserts, I highly recommend you to order one to share. Brought home some takeaway desserts, Macadamia nut tart and raspberry friands was a brilliant decision if you're not a sweet tooth like me. Accompany with a cuppa expresso or Americano will do your day the justice ;)

I'll definitely come back and try the rest of the menu/cabinet options next time round.

Amy @ My Dining Journey
Updated Review - 26 Jan 2015
It's been a while since I was last at Olaf's Artisan Bakery and to enjoy Auckland Anniversary Day, I took my family out to Olaf's for lunch. As per my first review, I still rave about the food that they serve, including the delectable tarts from the cabinet as well as their menu items.

Yet today, we experienced very poor service from the lady at the counter who clearly DID NOT want to be there nor serve us. Service with no smile and poor attitude. During the whole time I ordered, she had a sour expression that only disappeared when the people behind us ordered. She giggled and smiled with those male customers but when my sister went up to order, her grin quickly vanished.

To be honest, I think good service and great food need to come hand in hand. I already have to pay a surcharge because of a public holiday, I expect decent service. Is a smile too much to ask for, even if it's a fake one?

-------------------------- -------------------------- -------------------------- --------------------------

Olaf's Bakery and Cafe located in Mount Eden is not only a great little cafe, it is a fantastic and award winning bakery that makes European style artisan breads from scratch which supplies bread to fine dining restaurants such as The Grill, Sugar Club and Botswana Butchery. Olaf, the master behind this cafe and bakery is German trained with over twenty years of baking experience. I love purchasing their speciality breads whenever I host dinner parties because they have some stunning flavours including the macadamia and thyme sourdough loaf.

I've also stopped by to enjoy their cafe several times. Their gourmet breakfast which has baked brands, tomatoes, mushrooms, eggs, bacon, sausages and potato cake was matched with Olaf's six grain toast. A hearty meal but pricey meal. Their scrambled eggs with black truffle is to die for! Fluffy and light scrambled eggs with a heavy dose of truffle oil is heavenly and one of the best scrambled eggs in town!

Before you leave, make sure you stop by the cabinet and get something sweet for you to take home! Their desserts and pastries are worth the added inches!

Olaf’s Artisan Bakery truly lives up to its name – as soon as you enter you are greeted with the sight of gorgeous cakes, tarts, and pastries that make the mouth water… and we haven’t even started with their main menu yet! Their specialty is traditional European breads, which they supply to notable eateries such as Ostro and the Sugar Club. The open kitchen beside the dining area is a nice touch, allowing you to watch the bread being made as you eat.

We’ve been here a few times, and each time, despite my resolutions to try something new, I simply can’t get past the french toast with lemon curd, mascarpone, and raspberry compote ($19). The toppings are a nice change from the standard bacon and banana, and there is just something amazing about the flavour and texture of the bread that I can’t seem to put in words – it’s the crust, I think, and the smell… On the other hand, their iced passionfruit tea ($6) was almost unbearably sweet, and tasted more like passionfruit juice than tea.

The last time we came, my partner ordered the risotto with porcini mushrooms and pesto ($20). Despite my initial reservations (ordering risotto at a bakery!), it really did turn out pretty well, with a nice creamy texture and flavoursome taste. Next on the list to try are their pizzas, and the lovely counter treats that I never have seem to have space for after their mains. I did take away a chocolate danish once, and it was heaven in a brown paper bag, despite being eaten many hours later.

True, they are a bit pricey, but their quality makes up for it. I would definitely return, but will be sticking to their standard drinks.

I just had a strawberry smoothie and was shocked by the price $8 for a very ordinary smoothie. A total rip off. Not worth $8 by any standards.

I went with my best friend to this bakery cafe.Love their tarts and their bread. Especially their lemon tarts. There are hidden gems (a layer of chocolate).
Morty Hall
Mmmm! I have not tried any of the mains here, I will soon though! We've only ever popped in for a coffee and a sweet treat. The almond pain au chocolat is near perf. Light and buttery pastry with a delicious dark Belgian chocolate filling - shaved almonds on top - served warm... it doesn't last long. Fantastic with a strong cappuccino. Mochas are good too but the hot chocolate was rather milky this morning - probably because it was a particularly busy Sunday. The bread is on point too - fantastic, quality ingredients, Sourdough buns especially good with that cute little cube of butter :) Always a good choice, go Olafs!
Melissa Alfonso-Cruz
An absolute favourite. Artisan Fresh bread, coffee, sweets and savoury treats - very tempting to try them all. Definitely recommended, must-eat!

Olafs is a fantastic place just to hang out with friends for dessert or just for brunch. Saturday's & Sunday's are super crowded which means be prepared to wait & pounce on the first empty table. The eggs Benedict are yummy & the French toast with a side of bacon with the lemon curd is to die for. Try the Copenhagener which I swing by for a little treat

I went to Olafs for lunch today with a friend. They have a good menu and a fabulous selection of cabinet food. As it is a bakery I thought I should try something with their bread. I had a roast chicken ficelle which was substantial and delicious. My friend also enjoyed her sandwich. We shared a huge piece of this sponge, vanilla custard cake with meringue on the top (I can't remember it's proper name) and it was divine. I can't wait to come back and try some of their other food as everything looked so good!

Olaf's is my favorite cafe in Auckland and since they opened recently for dinner it was about time to check it out. We went last Saturday with a couple of friends. Mostly small plates on the menu, so I am in heaven. Between the four of us we ordered pane caserecio (the meaty version), brioche burger, gamberoni, arancini, lamb, spare ribs and the vegetarian pizza. The food is amazing! Why not, since the lunch menu is good as well. We all loved the wild boar rilletes and the burgers - they are to die for! They have a small selection of wines, but well chosen for our taste. We had a Waiheke Merlot which almost tastes like Italy. Finally dessert: chocolate mousse, banana lime tart tartin and the briocheschmarrn ( had look that one up on the menu). Never had something like that before. Soft and tasty with lots of caramel and the parfait not too sweet, which is a perfect match. We all decided to be back next week.

I dropped into Olaf's Bakery with a friend to satisfy our sweet tooth craving. It was my first time there and I was struck by how popular it was and how appetizing everything looked. My eyes were definitely bigger than my stomach so I really couldn't order anything substantial. My friend opted for the dark chocolate tart and I had the cinnamon roll. My cinnamon roll was delish! I loved the hint of orangey syrup goodness in it. Next time, I'll come for dinner and try out their confit duck!
Sirena Teodora
My.absolute favourite bakery in NZ! Amazing place.

Went here for brunch, ordered French toast and the big breakfast. Pretty fast service and nice food but coffee wasn't hot and small cups! Not too bad but wouldn't go back in a hurry.

I have been twice to Olaf's for dinner and thought it is about time to drop a line or two. Being from Italy I am kind of spoiled when it comes to food. So my expectations were not too high.

We started off with the pane casereccio
, olives, sundried tomato pesto, smoked eggplant, anchovies, prosciutto, salami and wild boar rilletes. I love the rilletes, taste almost like home. Next was the arancine, to die for. Followed by the assyrian lamb, moroccan fish and the crispy pork all exceptionally good. Love love their wine. We had a Merlot from Waiheke, couldn't actually believe the wine is from New Zealand as it really taste like an italian wine.

To finish it off we ordered the apple strudel (interesting presentation) and the tarte tatin - OMG YUMMY!!!

Our waitress was attentive and the food arrived steady from the kitchen, so I assume they took the last review in consideration. We will be back soon, probably to try their lunch as well.

Very much enjoyed their soup of the day on more than one occasion. Yummy, chewy breads; desserts (tarts etc) not too bad, but a little too sweet for my liking.
The most unfortunate of their services would be that some waiting staff are not very friendly, and all have frowns on their face if not emotionless...and Burnt Coffee on all occasions...lol.

Mt Eden Road is always overflowing on a Sunday with people brunching out. My friend and I were meant to try RAD cafe but the place was jam packed so we headed down Mt Eden Road and decided to try Olaf's Cafe. Inside was really buzzing, almost every seat was taken and it was really loud. Luckily we got a table outside and the weather was nice!

Olaf's was definitely on my 'must-try' list and I was amazed by what they had in their cabinets alone. It was full of yummy desserts, tarts, cakes, pastries and lots of different salads and sandwiches/rolls too. They also had fresh bread and a full menu to order from. Just a note: you do have to order at the counter and pre-pay your meals.

My friend and I decided to share dishes and order eggs benedict with bacon on sourdough ($21.50) and french toast with with bacon, banana, vanilla mascarpone, lemon curd, raspberry compote and maple syrup ($19).

The eggs bene was yum but there was nothing particularly special about it. I don't think it was worth $21.50. The French Toast though was amazing! I definitely recommend it. I loved the vanilla mascarpone and lemon curd which I don't usually see with french toast.
For drinks I tried the Chocofino which is basically a Mocha but with homemade belgian chocolate (mmmm) and my friend had a Cappucino.

To finish off we shared a Portuguese Tart which was super delicious! The pastry was nice and crispy while the custard was smooth and creamy.
Overall I really enjoyed Olaf's and would definitely come back again! There are so many yummy treats to choose from and they even do dinner service so I'd be keen try that as well.

I have eaten at Olaf's in the past and had no problems with the level of service I received. I have also bought bread to take away which is outstanding. Today I took away a selection of cakes and can safely say that they were delicious. The chocolate almond meal cake (bittersweet chocolate, the centre melted in my mouth almost like a fondant yum!!) the raspberry tarts and the raspberry and lemon bundt cake were to die for. I should have bought a lemon curd tart too because it also looked great. Something to look forward to next time I guess

Not child friendly. It's the worst experience we have been unfortunately a part of. Extremely rude owner who yelled out our children and attempted to charge for a broken glass, delegating the task to a reluctant staff member who was highly embarrassed by the event. Better choices in Mt Eden.
Caroline Botting
Is Olaf's one of the most expensive cafes in Auckland? Surely $13.50 for a sandwich and $5 for a coffee is extreme.
Genevieve Van Eden
Great cafe with very fresh tasty food. Its gives us a good excuse to go to Mount Eden.

Recommended to me by colleague!
Knew it was in the Mt Eden village and thought it would be easy to find? Assumed it was on the main street in some old building! It's down a side road a stone throws from the main drag! The place sits behind the Chinese fruit vendor in a modern looking clean building with a good rustic feel to it!
Sat by the window watching the old Chinese shopkeeper loading produce while our food was being prepped (Was told he is 100yrs old and his wife is in her 80's) Opposite me you can see the baker diligently making his loaves thru the glass partition
Ordered the bacon n eggs and my girl had a Danish pastry of some sort along with coffees. The food was nicely presented and ever so tasty. This has got to be one of the best in Auckland and they do live up to their reputation with out being pompous about it!

We'd walked in about 8.00 so very few diners in there! Come 9.00am the place was like being at the train station, so many people amassed in the eatery. My girl commented that so many different languages being spoken by the pretty patrons. She thought it was quite cute

Well, I don't live in Auckland, and now I am extremely bummed because Olaf's is fantastic. Delicious salads, soups and the bread, oh the bread. Great coffee too. It's busy yes, but there is a reason for that, it's because it is awesome!! Service was speedy and friendly despite a massive queue and stifling heat on Saturday. I'll be back on every visit for sure.
p.s. get the fig sourdough and eat it with blue cheese, you will thank me.
Alison Howard
Very poor service! Ordered a cooked meal, hot drink, a salad, quiche and cold drinks. Hot drink came first, no other drinks came. Got cooked meal and waited for other cabinet food to come. Waited and waited, still hadn't got other food. Told waiter and had to wait some more. Finally got cabinet food and was given wrong salad. Asked for a mixed salad and only got one type of salad! Complained to lady on counter who was very rude, said they would give us the other salad we had ordered. Time went by and we did not receive it. Terrible service, very rude and did not apologise for the big mix up! Will NOT be back!!!!

Twice now I've been and they haven't delivered the coffee. I know they can get busy but that's not a good thing in a Cafe. Luckily the good food earns them some forgiveness for the indifferent service. But it is high-priced for what is provided.

I've written this while at the Cafe and have downgraded another star from the rating as while waiting I was asked to pay again for the coffee I ordered, and after requesting they check I wasn't paying twice they didn't come back to me. I've also seen others have to dispute their orders.

Until the service standards visibly change I'll go to one of the many other Cafes nearby when in Mt Eden.
Busy place. Not a very relaxing place for meetings (very noisy). Service can be indifferent at times. The coffee quality can vary greatly depending on who is behind the counter.
Rozanne D
The food and the coffee here is excellent. I love coming early for truffle eggs. A lovely peaceful start to the day. The staff are very friendly and obliging when one is in a hurry. Love the way it's consistently clean and high quality food.

Have been to Olaf's a few times now with friends & we have always been disappointed with the incredibly slow service & expensive prices - $5.30 for a soy hot chocolate! Staff are often talking to each other & it takes forever to order. Recently I ordered a soy hot chocolate - as I'm allergic to dairy, when it arrived I could see there was chocolate sprinkled on the top, so I thought I'd better check to see if it was dark chocolate which has no dairy. The barista was so rude & condescending "Well if it's chocolate of course it has dairy" he said. He then had to ask the manager if there was dairy in the chocolate & she confirmed they use ganache. He was reluctant to swap the hot chocolate for anything else & was yelling out the whole situation to the manager so a whole queue of people were listening. He then told me to sit down & wait & he would let me know if they could make me a tea instead later! My friends couldn't believe his behaviour & one of the people in the queue also approached me to say she was appalled at the way he was acting. A simple thing like this would be easily fixed in any other Auckland cafe. Will never eat here again.
Jason
Just average cafe like others
Coffee wasn't hot enough(soy latte was just taste soy not coffee)
Foods was just average....tried to make different but same same not different...and couldn't figure it out this place is cafe or sandwich shop or bakery....no character......

Olafs is the best cafe in Auckland! I would go there every day if I could. The pastries are to die for. I would recommend the Raspberry tart and Cranberry Danish which my sister loves. It is unbelievable!

The coffee are not very nice though. My father prefers some other cafes such as Espresso Workshop for the coffee. Our whole family loves Olafs and thinks it is extremely tasty. Good service. We are regulars.

I would definitely recommend Olafs. I would give 4 stars if the coffee was amazing.
Cara Fonseca-Ensor
Love the feel of the place, and being able to watch the skillful bakers at work through the open kitchen. The baking is among the best I've had in Auckland - a blackberry friand, and an almond cake were perfect.

Unfortunately, I don't think I will return because of a couple of odd incidents. The first was a hot chocolate, which being seated facing the coffee counter, I noticed was made with hot water being poured into the cup before the milk. Odd, I thought, but it tasted OK, so... and then I got to the bottom to find curdled chocolate!

Second was lunch last weekend, when three out of four of us ordered the fish of the day. They arrived looking lovely, but with a strange odour. It tasted like it was off, so we asked the waitress to pass our comments to the chef, and she returned assuring us it was fresh. We didn't want to make a fuss, so tried again, but all four of us agreed that there was definitely something wrong with the fish, and so returned it to the kitchen. No offer was made to repair the issue, until one of us requested a replacement sandwich, and I had the toast - together the price of just one of the fish plates. The waitress was lovely, but I'm disappointed that there was no apology or any attempt to resolve our terrible meal!

Came here a few weeks ago and just wanted to say that we felt the service was absolutely excellent. The food was also great - fantastically presented and a taste sensation! I would definitely rate this cafe as up there with Auckland's best!
Kelly
I came to Olaf's last weekend with a group of friends. We were very impressed! The food was superb (I had the omlette- great!) and while I didn't have a coffee myself, the other girls said their coffees were excellent. It was busy (a sign of a good cafe!) and still the service was very good- fast but friendly. Great atmosphere to top it off. Will definitely be back. Thank you Olaf's!

Yum.

I could not fault Olaf's. Their coffee was the best I've had in Auckland for a long time, their service was friendly and delightful, their food was to die for!!! I had the pancetta de fungi (mushroom and pancetta gnocchi with what tasted like a lemon butter dressing and basil pesto) YUM! Could have eaten it a million times and totally reasonably priced considering the location. Other dishes ordered at my table were the BLT from the cabinet and the corn fritters from the specials board, both looked lush and were apparently equally delicious. When we left we picked up a couple of tarts and a loaf of ciabatta for later, not surprisingly they were great too.

I live in Wellington city where you're spoilt for choice on delicious food and great coffee and while I have found a few nice places on my many visits to Auckland, none have impressed me as much as Olaf's. I am so impressed. Definitely my new regular when I'm in town.

My only niggle was the $10 price for the cabinet salads, I probably would have had one if they were a more reasonable $8? But I haven't tried them and they did look spectacular so they could be worth it.

Heard that the croissants are to die for. Yes true to the word.

Ordered Americano...small jar of burning hot water was offered with 3/4 full cup of coffee. Small jar has no handle...spilled the whole jar into the coffee cup as it was too hot to handle which spilled on to my cloths. We had no offer or help to clean the table. Olaf you need to review your service or maybe get proper hot water jars?

I've been here three times now and been pretty disappointed. Everything looks lovely and the staff are very nice, but the coffee is average (I used to be a barista and a barista trainer so I know good coffee), and every time I've tried the food its been dry and bland. I just read a comment saying they charge extra for butter, which I wasn't told about when asked if I wanted butter with my scone. I can't imagine how awful it would have been without the butter though! The prices are outrageous considering the quality of food. If the food and coffee were good, I'd be happy to pay their listed prices but at this point in time it's just not worth it, especially when there are so many other options in this area.

We've been regulars at Olafs for a while now. I agree, it has its good points and a few not so good points. (But I don't think any cafe is good at everything nor strives to be.)

I really object to paying 80 cents for a small circle of butter. Items that need butter (scones, muffins) should have butter provided for free, as it is in most cafes I've been to. It's not alot of money but it does make the muffin damn expensive when you're already paying top price.

But as for their bread/cakes/muffins/pastries/sandwiches, they are excellent! I can't believe someone posted here that the bread was no good, it is the best. Thank-you Olaf.

Really cool Cafe. We went with a few friends for coffees and pastries. Magnificent!!!

One of our friends is from Germany and she was blown away by their breads. No wonder they have been awarded for their sourdoughs. Great stuff, we will definitely return.
Dave
I have been to Auckland recently to catch up with a friend who recommended Olaf's.

What an extraordinary place. Their staffs are up to speed, excellent coffee and delicious food. A bit on the pricy side, but when I talked to the Cafe Manager, she explained, that everything is made from scratch. Had a Hot Chocolate which is made with Belgian Chocolate – superb!

They have an open bakery were you can watch the bakers. What a great idea, especially for children. We forget these days where our food comes from. I can’t understand older posts, which give this place a one star rating. That is ridiculous. I am in the hospitality industry myself and my rating is thumbs up for Olaf’s. I will be back.
Erwin Pettigrew
I'm a German who has been living in New Zealand for five years and in all that time I have not been able to find real European bread. My search is over. Olaf's Artisan Bakery Cafe makes bread the equal of any European Artisan Bakery. I will drive the 50 kms to Olafs twice a week from now on to get my bread. I would have given 5 stars but there was no sauerkraut on the cafe menu. I'll have to keep looking for that.
Geoffrey Purton
A friend recommended Olaf's bread, so I went there for the Pain au Levain. The bread was excellent as I expected, but so was the food, the coffee and the pastries. The people here really know what they are doing. Everything we had was superb and the service was excellent even tho' it was a Sunday morning and the place was pretty full already. Definitely worth driving across town for, but get there early as the bread sells out fast.
Tornado
We have been regular weekend visitors to Olaf's. The staff have been very friendly and helpful. However, three times they brought the wrong order - when asked for Iced Coffe brought Iced Chocolate twice!

Food is good, however, its very expensive. On the whole, visit if you live nearby but not worth the travel.
Jordanne Leigh
I have always had a beautiful time here. I always get the Pain Au Levain with cream cheese, bacon, avocado and a milk chocolate ganache. There is a wonderful worker there who I have seen
Mostly at the till but sometimes on the coffees. He joyfully explained the difference between my usual earl grey and a "French" earl grey.
I'm always happy with the service and the swiftness at which they always deliver my food. I love this little place!

Went with my son for lunch last week. He ordered Calamari and I ordered Roast Vegetable Salad with Haloumi. The Calamari smelled (off!) and he couldn't eat it. My salad consisted of soggy eggplant only and the couscous base was bland and came with two small strips of haloumi. When we complained to the staff no-one seemed to care or do anything about it. It was over-priced and inedible food and we won't be back! We won't be recommending it as there are much better places in Mt. Eden.

Pro: good opening hours, nice interior, good coffee, great salads
Con: Bread could be better

Open till 6pm! That is pretty darn good for a cafe, considering they often close much earlier. Being around the corner from Mt Eden Rd, I've never noticed Olaf's and was very glad when my friend suggested to go there. The salad ($10) I had was amazing and also my friend's sandwich ($12.50) was delicious.

The only thing which didn't convince me was their bread. When I think of European (eg German) bread, it should be much harder and not too fluffy.

Needs to switch to more plantbased, sustainable options.
Owen
Great food, mediocre service and poor attitudes! Spent nearly $50 and they totally missed our coffees, so the rest of our party had finished theirs and two still had not arrived. When we approached them the barrista was quite aggro saying "Well, I made them" and the lady on the counter took ages to find the order. They remade them but when they finally arrived the cappuccino we ordered was a latte and the attitude was poor.
No apology offered! This was a first and last for us. They need to pick their act up.
Alice Pan
Sad to see this quaint cafe garner such an average rating on this site for I believe it is one of the best in Auckland.

Delicious breads, delectable patisseries and damn good coffees Olaf's Artisan Bakery & Cafe is a delight. You can even watch Olaf, the artisan baker and owner, perfecting his craft through the glass.

The temperature in the cafe is a tad too warm for my liking and the menu is pretty pricy but otherwise it is outstanding. Perhaps the bad reviews are just a tactic to keep this cafe for the locals :P.
Anita
Olaf's is one of my favourite cafes in Auckland. Such great European bread baked just perfectly is a rare find. Amazing pastries too (especially the linzer tart). I've never had any problems with the service - has always been perfectly pleasant, coffee is good too.
Bill Smith
Read recent reviews before going . Thought they were a bit tough as enjoyed earlier visits. Sadly no. Coffee took nearly an hour to arrive , scrambled eggs with truffle was nothing special and service hopelessly haphazard. Could see some customers were using vouchers. If staff don't have the systems , training and numbers to handle a busy cafe they should not offer vouchers. We would not have been the only dissatisfied customers. On the upside their patisserie items were delicious. Was our visit worth the wait. ? Definitely not. In Mt Eden ,Greenwoods Corner, Royal Oak and Market Rd there are alternative cafe's offering more efficent service and as good food. Kenzie's is one.

Just visited yesterday. Was looking forward to it as place looks great from outside. Walked in and found it way too hot. Staff friendly though and food looked great.

Sat by kitchen and my sister noticed person/owner making bread seemed to be unhappy with us which made her quite uncomfortable as she was facing him.
As it turns out it was my 3 1/2 yr old boy that he was unhappy with and as soon as my boy put his feet on the chair, we were immediately told that our boy was not allowed to do that. We got him to put his feet down but thought owner was a bit precious and OTT.
My sister took his shoes off just in case it happened again however kids will often sit on their knees so they can reach the food as adult chairs are too low. Perhaps cafe could think about boosters or something like that as it's obviously an issue.

Food arrived. Sister said french onion soup very good.
My gourmet breakfast was underwhelming for the price. Baked beans and bacon were great however everything else under-seasoned. Only one little sausage and one slice of bread cut in half. Bland scrambled eggs, mushrooms and potato thing.

Because young children don't seem to be welcome in this cafe, I will not visit again.
Tim Checkley
Delicious food. Great coffee. Prices a bit steep but quality nosh so not outrageous.
The service is infuriatingly slow. I just stood and waited while the guy serving went and asked a question from someone in the kitchen, while a line of people waited to be served. A few other staff members drifted by indifferently. This went on for what felt like about 5 minutes. Unbelievable. Quicker to walk across the road to Frazers and order, even though they're busier.
Won't be back

Spacious restaurant if you have prams. Food is delicious although on the expensive side for what it is. There's a reason why it gets crowded so quickly.

I had been to this cafe as I had a deal voucher.

I had ordered a big breakfast and my friend had ordered a french toast without bacon as she is a pure vegetarian.

The service was way too slow had to wait for 25 mins to get the food. when the food came it was a shock the french toast had bacon in it.

The big breakfast was the saddest one which i ever had in my life. As a chef i rate the Big breakfast 1/10.

the bread was dried and no butter was given one small bit of sausage mushrooms had no flavor at all, tomato was too dried out bacon was way too salty as if it was taken out from the sea directly. scrambled eggs were over done not worth $22.50 really disappointing.

Would never ever visit this place again nor recommend to any one else. waste of time and money :-(((((
Luca
Going there time to time and as i am old European lad i love good flavours and great bread.
Well at Olaf's everything comes together, i love their fennel sausages, they remind me Sicily so much!!then their baguette is crispy and crunchy just the real one i used to buy in St.Tropez years ago...i recommend this place to everyone who has taste!!!

Went yesterday and today. Yesterday and today the food was excellent. Ordered Eggs Bene with Avocado yesterday and with Salmon today. Perfect. Ordered a flat white yesterday. Drinkable. Ordered one today. Disgusting. Bitter and insipid. The milk was not creamy as it should be. Had a sweet pastry yesterday and today. Divine. Will be back for food but will skip the coffee and order a cold drink next time. Also, something needs to be done about the heat. It is so hot and hard to breathe in there.
Chrissie Richardson
Very friendly staff.
I have eaten here several times over the last month-with people of different ages.
The staff were extremely helpful with my 90 year old friend.
The cakes are superb.

Late luke warm. Avocado was the smallest in size I ever had anywhere in my life, it was brown with finger marks and portions like snack size. On the pricy side. Mt Eden has better places than Olaf's.
Anna Willenbacher
Best coffee in Mt.Eden, probably in town, the food was absolutely excellent and very friendly, competent staff. Try the Linzer and my suggestion is either the duck risotto or the crumbed pork. And definitely taste some bread:-)
Lucy
Only reviewing the coffee...not very good, at all. Tried a few times, but had their last chance. Shame, Mt. eden could do with some good coffee!
David Boshier
Great new cafe in Mt Eden with a modern bright, welcoming layout. They also bake their own bread and there is a bakery within the cafe.

I can recommend the scrambled eggs with truffle. My other half liked their home made chai.

The only downside was that the coffee's took a while to arrive.

Will be back.

Olaf's has been in Mt Eden village (my local stomping ground) for a few years now but I have never quite made it there as it is always hard to go past the old favourites, but this weekend for brunch I decided it was time to branch out.

I met my family there at 9am and it was busy but not over crowded, we were there for brunch but there were lots of yummy looking cakes and rolls etc in the cabinet so I definitely need to go back for lunch one day. They also had a sign up saying now open for dinner, but I didn't get a chance to see a dinner menu.

For brunch I decided on the croque monsieur as it has been awhile since I have been to La Cigale markets and that is usually what I get there. My family ordered the pancakes and omelette. My meal was delicious, they didn't scrimp on the bechamel sauce which is critical for a good croque monsieur, and its a big call but I would say it reviles the one from La Cigale markets.

We had an enjoyable meal with yummy food and there were definitely other things I would order there, so I will go back, need to add it to the rota of Mt Eden Village cafes...

Mouth watering looking at the food cabinet. They got the best pastries especially the tarts and a huge selection of freshly bakes breads. Ooh! And the blueberry smoothie is a def must try:)
Vivien @ KJAS Blog
Olaf's is located in the heart of Mt Eden so it's convenient but amazingly not too noisy. There's street parking along Stokes Rd and into Epsom Ave if you need it. There's a variety of seating both outside in the warm sun or inside where the lighting is warm and cozy. The entire place smells of baking and good cafe food.

I like how you can see what you can order in the cabinets and this is probably the one cafe with really good cabinet food. It was just at the end of the busy lunch period but still nothing looked like it had been wilting there for a morning. It looked fresh and tasty, all of it.

Finally, we decided on a chunky slice of a vegetarian quiche with side salad and a blueberry muffin. They tasted as good as they looked. The quiche is hefty and had so many layers. It was very eggy and the skin was browned to perfection so it was chewy while everything inside was melt-in-your-mouth soft and smooth. I couldn't really tell what vegetables were in it, mostly green ones, and they lifted the egg enough so you felt like you could devour more. It also came with this dish of pickled beans and pumpkin or something like that, which was rather meh and a bit too sour for my liking. The salad was fresh and well-tossed, with a very tart dressing. I would've preferred it without the dressing.

The blueberry muffin had huge chunks of blueberry in it and was soft and delicious, just like home-baked. I really like how Olaf's makes everything themselves. In fact, a lot of other cafes sell their food. Pop in here for some great cooked food and to watch the bakers making bread and pastries, or even the amazing cabinet food. You won't regret it.
Two Honest Truths
Stopped by Olaf's Bakery for a quick lunch after hearing great things about them. Immediately, I was captured by the open kitchen area where you can see the bakers making bread. The cafe is very spacious with plenty of tables. After tasting some bread samples, I ordered a blueberry smoothie, ham and cheese sandwich and strawberry tart from the cabinet. I was surprised at how salty the sandwich was. The bread itself was very chewy and sometimes hard to bite off, which was a bit of disappointment.

The highlight of the meal would have to be the strawberry tart. The tart had the right hint of sweetness. The custard and fresh strawberries paired with the crunchiness of the tart was a great combination. I would definitely return for the tarts, but maybe not so much for the sandwiches.

Olaf's is downright delicious!! I have discovered this little gem only very recently, and have since made at least four trips, well out of my way, just to bask in the enjoyment of my meals! I think the key to their impressive selection is based in their bakery - they bake their own bread every morning, and what bread it is! They do not just simply have your average brown/wheat/ciabatta, oh no. They have nearly a dozen different kinds of bread, which they sell in full loaves, as well as part of their meals. I am not usually a fan of food on display in cafes - never enough sauce, too cold, rubbery etc. But Olaf's is in a realm of its own. I first tried their Reuben sandwich, with delictable cornbeef, amazing cheese, and out of this world delicious bread. Topped off with just the right amount of sauce and then toasted, it absolutely made my day. Since then I have also tried their version of the classic ham and chesesandwich - Freshly baked ciabatte, fresh and flavoursome cheese, plenty of ham, crisp cos lettuse with the perfect amount of mustard dressing (I thought I didn't like mustard....this sandwich proved me wrong!).
Each visit, I couldn't help myself, their pastries and desserts on display just looked too good, and I have since tried their apple galette and dairy milk chocolate tart. Just amazing. I can't wait to go back and try something new on the menu!
