Review Uncle Tetsu - Auckland

Wilson Shum
Came here for the exclusive crepe brulee which is only available on Saturday between 12 to 2.30pm. This reminds me of the dessert crepe that I had when I was in Japan. The crepe was soft and not too dry. The cream brulee was very tasty and made perfectly, the little bit of jam adds diversity to flavour and there was a little bit of their classic cheese cake at the bottom of the cake to add texture. Very delicious will definitely be back for this. We also ordered the matcha cheesecake, which in my opinion, the classic original was better, but still tasted good.

Authentic Japanese cheese tarts, love their madeleine too. They have different flavors occasionally, I’ve tried taro and green tea, both are good. But my favourite is still the original one. At $5.5 per cheese tart, the price is very reasonable and aligns with the prices overseas. Their cheese cakes are good too, you can eat them cold or slightly warm them up for a softer (slightly melting) feel.

This shop undoubtedly serves one of the best crepe brulee in all of New Zealand, and I was truly impressed with the quality and the cozy atmosphere it provided. The brulee is a delight to savor, starting with the delectable caramelized sugar crunch on top, followed by the smooth custard and cream. The cream was perfectly creamy, striking the right balance of sweetness. The crepe itself was delicious, and the homemade berry and cherry sauce added a delightful touch without being overly sweet. Each layer of the brulee was a hit for me, and I couldn't find any faults—it was simply perfect. Kudos to the chef for crafting such a remarkable treat. However, it seems the popularity of the crepe brulee is causing some demand challenges. I witnessed people standing in line, and by around 1:45, the brulee had already sold out. It might be worth considering offering it for two days a week instead of just on Saturdays to keep up with the high demand. The only minor inconvenience was the limited seating space, which led to some waiting. Despite my order taking 15 minutes to be delivered, it was absolutely worth it for the exquisite crepe brulee.
Mauricio Kimura
Simply one of the best cheese cakes I’ve ever tried! So soft and tasty! The location is convenient, lots of parking and full of other places to eat. There are two flavors, green tea and the normal.
mjn205
I used to be their loyal customer when their store was still in CBD. Since they relocated to North Shore, I didn't have time to visit them as much as before. Cheese cake was still delicious. Tarts were nice. Sadly they sell crepe brulee only on Saturday from 12-2.30pm.
Bunzy Chai
went on saturday to grab their crepe brulee! the queue looked long but it doesn't seems like a long wait, probably about 15-20mins to pay and wait for the crepe. I was so happy to finally tried it! so yummyy and kudos to their hardwork!
Harry Fraser
Fantastic Japanese cheesecake! It’s a bit out of the way so good to order in advance just to be sure they’ll have it available. The tart was also very nice.
Tracie NT
Nice cheese tarts, the filling is so yummy, its sweet and savoury at the same time. I think the biscuit crust tastes slightly like it has too much baking soda or bicarbonate in it but its minor. I just like never to taste any hint of that.
Albert Anderson
Eye watering price ($25) but a very satisfying and delicious cake which can only be found at asian bakeries and which does not make you feel sick. Good thing the size is shrinking or I will gain more weight.
Hanajan
Very Asian taste kind of cake. Not too sweet or too oily. The staff is quite nice and the service is really good. Madeleine has a variety of flavours which is decent if you want to have a try. With its convenient location and beyond average taste, no wonder it was popular at the beginning of their business.
Josie Elisaia
Don't bother. We were told by Luke the guy at the start of the queue it's only "going to be 45 minutes". I only got our order 1 hour 50 minutes later, with many people cutting in front of the queue with their 'friends' and 'family' appearing out of nowhere! Sort out your queue system! Why not give out queue numbers instead so people can't just cut in front of the queue? Don't give these guys free publicity by queueing up like zombies in front of the footpath. You have better things to do with your time.
Anastazia Wairepo
The queue is long but it's well worth the wait (if you want a shorter queue head to causeway bay, Hong Kong - line is shorter there). Staff are friendly and super polite (thanking almost all customers for coming with ARIGATO ). The fluffiest cheesecake you'll ever taste... def my fav.
Lauren Sullivan
If you haven’t tried this before it is a must!!!!! Nothing like anything here in NZ so light and fluffy, staff are happy and helpful, packaging is also really good
Audrey Smodrey
Enjoyed the cheesecake even after it's been in the fridge. Easily warmed up or eat cold. Very soft and fluffy - it melts in your mouth. Not overwhelmingly sweet but creamy at the same time. Queue was annoying but if you go when you're not in any rush and you brought someone to queue with (or bring your phone) it isn't too bad. Otherwise wait another month!
Henson Tan
The line is very long so if you can wait a few weeks the excitement will probably subside then. Please note this is a Japanese cheesecake which is different to Nz euro style so don’t bother comparing to that. Definitely soft and not overpowering and taste is not too dissimilar to the Chinese bakeries version. Price is on par too but $20 is quite expensive.
Mariah D Jones
Was a fair wait but I want to thank the staff for trying their best to make the cakes as fast as they could! Cake was delicious enough for 3-4 people or one of me ;) yumyum thank you all for your good work!
Moe Sylver
Long queues. However worth the wait. Love it. Will visit again indeed.
Hiroko Okuyama Jenny
Best cheesecake ever I had in my life. Unbelievably soft & delicious.
Garry 'G' Schloegl
This cheesecake is just right, not too sweet and really fluffy!!! Nom nom
Ming Fang
It looks nice! although I haven't try it yet. Hope not bad.

I love their cakes! I buy their cakes for birthdays, parties, presents. I come here quite often and it’s very popular with young people and families. I would recommend the original cheesecake over the chocolate flavour . The macaroons and waffles are a bit too sweet for me.
CARO CONSUMES
Airy and light. Can get boring when trying to consume an entire piece as it’s all one flavour and one texture so I tend to eat mine with berries in the summer and I think it goes well with the bit of acidity

Super delicious cheese cake. I always put in freezer for an hr and eat. Like a ice cheese ice cream cake! Service is nice and friendly too.

If I want to get a cheesecake without feeling guilty after, Uncle Tetsu’s will always be the first thing on my mind. That fluffy, soft, airy and so delicious cheesecake. I can finish the whole thing just by myself. Haven’t tried their muffins yet but I heard they’re also good.
Emily Ng
Be there twice today for the Madeleine but was told “sold out” in the afternoon. The items available are always less than in the menu and the waiting time is expected to be longer then longer
Dxlche
Highly recommend their new menu item: crepe brûlée! $9.50 for a crepe filled with uncle tetsu cheesecake, brûlée creme, dark choc, whipped cream and jam topped off with a perfect layer of blowtorches sugar. Worth the 15 min wait!

Japanese cheesecake has always been one of my favorite cakes, it’s very different from the traditional cheesecake, it’s got a light and moist texture, similar to a chiffon cake but softer and smoother. Uncle Tetsu’s cheesecake has it all! It’s super soft and spongy, especially when you heat it up in the microwave for a few seconds, it really taste like just fresh out of the oven. Their madeleines also very popular, vanilla and matcha flavour available daily, there’s also daily special flavours such as chocolate, honey etc. from Monday to Wednesday.
Caitlin
I didn’t really enjoy it but maybe that’s due to my own preference I guess tasted too eggy for me?? But because it smelled so good I was expecting something amazing but it was just average.
MCP
Their cheesecake has a really nice texture, soft and smooth - it just melts in your mouth! They taste quite bland in room temperature and taste best after few hours in the fridge 🧡
Ming_Angela Y
Soft, fluffy, and melt-in-your mouth texture; flavoursome but not too overpowering.

We have tried both the original cheese cake and chocolate cheesecake, would rate the original flavour better.

Okay value for money but nice to have as a treat once in a while. :)
Ang Sarap
I have been wanting to try this for quite some time now but every time I pass by their shop in Queen St the queue is enormously long, like the queues you see on a popular theme park ride on a school holiday weekend, queueing is not my thing and its one of the things I love in New Zealand, queueing is not a common sight apart from this one.
LiLi Bee
Both the cheesecake and angel hat are delicious but I prefer the cheesecake. They are small for its price. Angel hat is suitable for 2 people really, as it’s very airy.
Little store for takeaway only.
Staff are always friendly.

$20 small Japanese cheesecake. It supposed to be jiggly but I have never seen it. I bought the original, chocolate and blueberry flavours before. They taste nice but not that omg to die for. Ok to try different flavor once in a while. Don’t quite like their madeleines, hard and dry!
Food2belly
Love the cheesecake here, it's fluffy light and giggly. More guilt free compared to the traditional European cheesecake. I also like Uncle's Tetsu Madeline's, they are on the denser and drier side though. The cheesecake is also quite pricy unless you are sharing with people.
Grace
Pretty average cheesecake. Texture is soft and bouncy but not much flavor. Would recommend trying once but not worth the price. The size is pretty large and can feed a few people.
Joy Eats
Cheesecake is very fluffy and light. Flavour is good too. I would say the price is quite expensive though for just one cheesecake. The portion size isn’t huge either.
_foodfanatic
I have tried uncle tetsu cheesecake from Canada. To get your hands on this cheesecake you need to wait in line for hours. One day came across this place in the city and I thought the hype would be the same. However there was no line up. Even the taste is nothing to the one I had in Canada. This place the cheesecake taste as if it wasn’t fresh and a few days old and little dry .. not the soft and tasty as Canada. The price of course is a bit expensive
Gordon Geko
Had the madelline yesterday, it was worse than the countdown muffins - very dry and not worth at all, giving 3 star overall as the cheesecake is nice.

Like the one we have in Indonesia, uncle tetsu also has one shop in auckland.. and i prefer the buy the cheesecake in here, taste more cheesy and delicious.. especially the chocolate one, it’s really great

I travelled Japan in 2017 and tried a million Japanese Cheesecakes!! Why? I absolutely love cheesecakes! Ok.....it wasn’t quite a million.

Japanese cheesecakes are delicious! They are unique and like Kit Kats in Japan, come in a lot of different flavors.

I love the original Japanese cheesecakes like the Uncle Tetsu style here in Auckland.

Unfortunately, this is where my enthusiasm ends. Uncle Tetsu’s cheesecakes are nothing like the tasty, delicious cheesecakes found in Japan.

I’ve been here twice, highly disappointed both times.

Best Japanese cheesecake - go to the ‘Cheese Garden’, Skytree Tower, Tokyo, Japan!

Ankita Langa
Delicious and fluffy cheesecake! It's not worth paying $20 for tho, quite pricey for the size. It's super light and small in size, could easily finish in one sitting. :p
Alice In New Zealand
This was second time that i ve tried. First one was when they just opened . :) was just melted in my mouth. Really soft. Its like sponge cake. Yummy
ㅇㅇ
I remember when this place first opened last year and everyone lined up in a longest queue for hours to get their Japanese cheesecake. I didn't want to do that so I just waited until the popularity to die down and tried it this year. It is definitely yum but I don't think it's that much worth waiting in line for a long time to taste it. It is also pretty costly compared to the Cheesecakes in Japan. They also have maidelenes which I had no idea what they were until I tried it for the first time today. There are various flavours from vanilla, honey, matcha and chocolate. I got the chocolate one and it was just like a common chocolate muffin. Pretty average :(
Jenny Da
Uncle Tetsu makes super spongy and yummy Japanese style cheesecakes fresh from the oven multiple times a day! There used to be a line outside when they first opened and the hype is definitely worth it! They also do madeleines and release limited flavours from time to time including earl grey and green tea.

During Christmas time (pictured) the store stamps the cakes with a cute Santa/Reindeer picture.

Will definitely be buying more cakes from here, highly recommended

I’ve had this cheesecake in Sydney about 2 years ago. So was excited to try this again. It tastes different, it’s not as smooth, fluffy or cheesy. The size is definitely smaller than what I remembered.
Raymond Tiong
My brother brought home an Uncle Tetsu cheesecake and some madeleines for our family to try. I liked the cheesecake: it was moist and not too rich or sweet, which I think is the balance that a lot of Asians tend to prefer. However, given the portion size, I didn’t think it was worth the price and would prefer to get a cake from Classic Bakehouse instead.

While not as tasty as their cakes, the Uncle Tetsu madeleines did grow on me. These biscuits were a bit hard at first; we preferred to microwave them slightly or have them with tea.
Louise
Not sure if worth the hype, but wouldn’t be opposed to having it once in a while...?
I enjoy it but not sure if I enjoy it enough to pay $20 for it 😅
The service is lovely, I would also like to try their limited edition flavours but every time I go they’re sold out 😭
Miss Monkey
I have been wondering how amazing that cake is that lined up with people everyday. It’s definitely not worth $20. Not a bad cake but nothing special about it. Overpriced. Good marketing though.
Emma
The cheesecake is alright. It’s decent tasting, light and fluffy but it’s really nothing too special. I want to love it but it’s just a bit boring.
Tony Ma
Almost but not quite.

Very popular in Asia, however the cake and cupcakes are missing a bit of something.

The cheese cake needs to be put into the fridge to taste better. It’s unfortunate but the cake itself is a bit too dense. Does not melt in your mouth like how a good Asian cheesecake does. Without the fridge and mouth melting factor it’s a little bit of a regret.

The cupcakes need to be heated up and matched with whipped cream or fluffy custard. Otherwise eating it as is from the shop tastes regret also.

Edible. But nothing special.

Service: 4/5
Environment: 4/5
Food Quality: 2.5/5
Food Quantity: 4/5
Presentation: 3/5
Price per person: $10-$15

Not worth the hype .. but good cheesecake. Its not sweet and quite eggy. You’ll have a warm or cold option.. i went for warm but I should have gone for the COLD option. Coz the cake taste so much better after. When ordering cheesecake, I would like to have a rich cheese/cream taste to it. But this does not. Personally, I would just stick to traditional cheesecakes with crumb base 😂
Darren Big Belly
Well well well, dear jiggly wiggly cake.
You are moist and soft and delicious.
Is it worth the queue when it first opened? I don’t know, the missus lined up for me. So yes it was.
We had the original flavour. Not too sweet, and it was light and fluffy. Dangerous. I could eat almost the whole thing my self.

4/5
Ginsu
I remembered the big lines outside their window store the first month of opening, I didn’t bother after hearing people lined up for an hour or so. And the reviews from friends weren’t too high. But walking past one day there wasn’t a person in line so I thought I would give it a go, I bought the earl grey cheesecake which was limited edition at that time, its moist definitely, but the moisture was to the point the cake felt soggy. It wasn’t too sweet which fits my palette well, the flavour was pleasant.

No centipede line outside these doors - today was a good day (Ice Cube voice) 😂
The price was $20. Bit pricy for a whole cheesecake so I'd expect a bit of love went into making these.
The size was a sensible - '7.5' pizza for one, but the portion was enough to say I ate half of it to myself. 😂😂😂
The taste definitely melts in your mouth like an otto trying to catch candy floss in water. You can definitely taste the cream cheese but the after taste is prompt to please.
I've heard it tastes better where it originates from, so only time will tell when I reach that destination. Until then, I'm quite pleased with the texture of a different cheesecake.
Let's not forget the bag it came in. 😉 Fancy, fancy, fancy. 👍

Psst. I see they do chocolate ones too 😉
We passed by this bakery many times & never had a chance to try the lovely-looking madeleines. Today, after the unpleasant experience at Chancery Bistro, we picked up some buttery vanilla madeleines & a bag of rusk. They were nice, but I was expecting something nicer. Maybe the cheesecake would have made a better choice.
(Food - 3.5/5)
Visited on 30 April 2018

While you might know Uncle Tetsu for its cheesecake but you'll have to give their Madeleines a try! They have a variety of madeleines and the flavours change daily (apart from the traditional vanilla ones). Matcha is the newest (and so far my favourite flavour) but they also have super interesting ones like chocolate, Earl grey and honey! Would love to go back and try them all :)
Kaoseumu
Love the cheesecakes poufy fresh and more solid next day from the fridge. Like an airy sponge cloud version of baked New York cheesecake. Friendly fast service. Would give five stars if they cost fifteen instead of twenty dollars each. おいしい!
Serena L
Make sure put the cheese cake into fridge for at least 2 hours, so you can taste the cheese. Otherwise it just taste like an egg cake. But the staffs are very friendly
Kelly
Finally got the chance to get my hands on the famous cheesecake here!

We arrived around 8pm and luck for us there was no line, ordered a cake and sampled it the next day. I can understand the hype and this is a very light and delicious cheesecake. Typical I am not a fan of cheesecake due to the heaviness but this cheesecake from uncle Tetsu is nice and fluffy! It actually resembles more of a cake that cheesecake.

If you’re a lover of cheesecake you’ll definitely need to try!
Fit2eat
I’ve finally had the cheesecake from Uncle Tetsu but was a little bit disappointed as in my opinion it doesn’t live up to the hype.

I bought a cheesecake and four Madeleine (vanilla and earl grey flavor) for $30 as they have a special deal on at the moment. The cheesecake is $19.99 and Madeleine is $3.70 each.

I do enjoy the cheesecake as it’s very soft, fluffy and moist, just melting in your mouth! However, the texture of the Madeleine is very dry and dense, I couldn’t even finish them.

Overall, I think it’s worth to try the cheesecake but I may not go back again especially if there’s a long queue. Luckily there wasn’t a queue at all when I got mine after lunch.
Jevaky7
Too small for someone like me.. I can eat the whole thing in just one seat and still my tea/coffee is not just halfway done.. not too sweet and the texture is so fluffy and melts in your mouth.. you will still asking for more
John Blomfield
I went after the hype had died down and tried the Madeleines first. They are nice but nothing special and not worth price. The cheese cake on the other hand is very good. It feeds 2 comfortably and 3 fair. The cake tastes eggy at first and then a pleasant sweetness comes thru on the palate. Nice texture and consistency will buy again as a treat. The great thing about is that the sweetness is just right and one finishes the cake feeling rather healthy.
LilMSunshine
Wow Japanese cheesecake! Always a que most of the day. It's a good sign people love it. So we ordered the standard cheesecake and it was out of this world. The cheesecake taste spongy and wiggly soft and melts in your mouth. Unbelievably delicious! The taste makes you eat more and more.....and now, they came up with the chocolate cheesecake flavor. So worth the que...you will love it! Heading there now....lol
Rosanne Choy
Light and fluffy. Perfect for dessert after dinner. Not too sweet or dense. Madeleines were fresh out of the oven and tasted delicious! Maybe even better than their cheesecakes. I reckon the green tea one tastes the best. Also reckon the chocolate cheesecake tastes better than the original.
Andrew Su
So yummy the cheesecakes are, definitely worth the price. You can't sit down here, no ambiance, to nothing. It's all about the cake. Mr preference is to eat the cake after it's been in the fridge to cool down.

Believe in the HYPE!

It’s taken me quite awhile before getting one of the famed Japanese Bake Cheese Cake from Uncle Tetsu, mostly due deterring lines that always seem to pile up when I walk past.

Surpassingly as I was coming back from a meeting in upper queen street I walked past and that there was no line!

Taking the opportunity like how a CR7 in front of goal, I gleamingly walked to the counter and brought a cheese cake whoop whoop!

This is pretty much where the review ends because I left it in my family fridge and when I came back from basketball it was all gone! My cousin who has a sweet tooth and her friends went to town on my cake! To be fair I did say they were allowed a slice. Although my poor self wasn’t able to taste the cake, my cousin was more than happy to give her review of the cake. Full of dairy, creamy beyond belief and so delightful to bite into, when you do you kinda just keep going till there is nothing left. She did do a nice taste test comparing a light microwaved slice vs fresh from the fridge, highlighting that the warmer version is miles better.

Showstopper: Must try at least once if you live in Auckland.

Overall
Joan Cecille De Guzman-Lomibao
Freshly baked cheesecake... Soft and fluffy Japanese cheesecake... Not too sweet, just right... I love the soft texture that melts in your mouth... Highly recommended...

This is a favourite for me :) some people may like it some may not but for me this is a good cheesecake. Although it is a bit pricey , I would still buy it because I think it's worth it and the line is not as long anymore which is great!

The first time I had Uncle Tetsu cheesecake was in HongKong and the taste in this Auckland store is quite similar to the store in HongKong.
In my personal opinion, there isn’t much tooo special about them. As I can get something really similar at my local asian bakery such as Rio at a slightly lower price.
Overall, it’s tasty, but definitely not worth queueing up for. Luckily, I went earlier this week when the craze is over and there wasn’t a queue. 😏
Jason Zhang
We waited for the line to die down as it was very busy when it just opened. For $20 the original cheesecake didn’t really live up to its hype in my opinion. Even though it was soft, a little fluffy, and freshly baked, the taste didn’t amaze me that much. It has a strong cheesy taste that’s moist and with a little egg white flavor. The price is a bit high for it but it tasted pretty okay overall. The size was pretty small as well for its price.

Taste - 7/10
Size - 6/10
Price - 6/10

Great service for this new Japanese cheesecake shop in Auckland CBD, beautiful, cute and soft jiggly cheesecakes, YUM! Totally worth the flavours and the wait!
Adachanrocks
Over priced and nothing special. Came here a few days ago to buy their cheese cake with a couple of friends. We lined up for about 15 minute or so. By the time it was our turn, their was only 1 cheesecake left for the 4 of us. So we end up buying one to share and I also brought a couple of their madeleine (since I felt I had lined up for so long and can't return empty handed).

Well...should have just left empty handed. The cheesecake was nothing special. You can easily get something equivalent at Reo or La Cournne just across the street, and at half the price too. The madeleine was also disappointing, it tasted like the average butter cake which you get from the supermarket. When I brought it home and ask my mum to try, she ate half of it and couldn't finish, her comment was, it taste just like the muffin she buys from New World but staler as if it had sat in the fridge for a couple of days.

The whole limited batch thing is a sales gimmick in my opinion. The harder to get, the more people want. That's all, no special. I don't see myself return any time soon.
CrazyCatLady_EmmaC
We got the cheesecake to see what all the craze was about. The cake was light and fluffy, freshly baked. It’s a little over price for its size.
John Kemp
What a sensation who cares about the waiting in the line love the taste it's truly beautiful cheese cake not like any other cheese cake gave a friend a taste love it and remember the taste one month ago and wants to buy for His son Birthday...
How good is that? Still remember one month on
Keep up the great work folks and Welcome to New Zealand.. .

The snacks here are quite nice. They're made fresh and are delicious warm. Very good pricing for the quality! There is not a minimum they have an amount to suit everybody!
Ling Luc
It was exciting to finally see what the craze is all about. There was quite a line up before we got to the front but it was all worth the wait. We bought the Christmas party special and tried the madeleines first. They tasted pretty average but had quite a crispy crust on the top which was so satisfying. Then we got to the cake!!! It was so moist and delicious. It literally melts in your mouth. Tried it again the next day after it's been in the fridge and it still melts in your mouth. Cheese flavour deepens too. Definitely a must try!
Yuri.kim479
I have heard so many people raving about this cheese cake. So I have finally tried them with my friend, I loved the christmas season stamp on the top it was cute. The texture of this cake was soft and fluffy, they were not as sweet as I have expected but still tasted good.
FoodieAsh
Very tasty, will definitely go there again regardless of the long line. The muffins were very tasty and the cheesecake was just amazing. Yummmmmy!
Meeka
Not worth the hype but the cheese cake still tastes good, definitely wouldn’t want to pay 19.99 for this again though since the cake itself is quite small I’d rather make the cake myself at home
Hotdog&Buns
A mix between a cheesecake and sponge cake. The texture is amazing, it is incredibly soft and mellow. Taste wise, it is a bit eggy but still has that creamy cheesecake punch. Not cheap and their madeleines suck, hence only a rating of 3.5 but the cheesecake itself deserves a solid 4/5.
IMwatermelon
It was lucky for us to wait less than 15min to get the "super popular" cheese cake since we jumped into a long line. I have tried Uncle Testsu in China before, New Zealand one is easier to finish by two people at once. It is good ratio at sweet, but I can't taste much cheese. It's like almost sponge cake and it cost fortune.

Good chance to try. But you'd better not expect too much if you have waited so long.
The Burger Man
From all the hype and long queues I decided to try it out. The staff are very friendly. It was very nice of them to tell me that it's only good for 3 days in the fridge. The cheese cake is an egg cake. Literally. It just takes like egg. That's all. Really don't understand why everyone goes crazy over this. Ate one piece and threw the rest away. Waste of $20. Not recommended and I will never go there again.

This top end of queen street Auckland has had a mini explosion of new food outlets and the latest is Japanese franchise uncle tetsu,a cheese cake sensation, sweeping across Asia to Australia and now in Auckland with big hype and queues out the door even a mention on the evening news due to the hype,I was lucky enough to be treated a cake from a friend

Verdict=like anything new people keenly to try product s out,but I wouldn't queue over a hour for this cheesecake now I've tried it,...local Asian bakeries, like rio, class bake house,la courennie have similar cheesecake product s which are equally as "nice"if not better....
Benedict Uy
Stopped by to pick up some since I was in town. The line looks quite long but it starts at the door and doesn't go into the shop. If you are just wanting the madeleines then you can head to the front of the queue, but if you were wanting the cheesecake then you have to wait in line.

You pretty much wait in line for freshly baked cheesecake. Once a batch is ready then they sell one cheesecake per person for $19.99.

Cheesecake is interesting but a bit too soft for my liking.
Ghoulnz
After growing up on NY style baked cheesecake I was anxious to try Uncle Tetsu. The line was very long on my first visit so I had to settle for some Madeline’s. They were very good and made a nice strawberry shortcake type desert for a dinner party I hosted. Easy desert that looked and tasted fancy with some fruit and cream. I made sure I had enough time to wait in line on my second visit. Roughly 12 cheesecakes are produced every 20 minutes. It’s great how you can watch through the window and the staff was super friendly. The cheesecake was worth the wait and was nice both warm fresh and cold the next day. Very light and fluffy and melts in your mouth. Nice alternative to a heavy baked cheesecake.
Mei
The description is like a sponge and cheesecake rolled into one. Not one and not the other. It definitely reminds me of Asian cakes which are not so sweet and but light and fluffy. It is lucky for those who like it made this way.
Moke Xu
Taste more like cheese soufflé than cheesecake. It’s airy and light, rise up beautifully in the oven, just not so cheesy, or cake. Slightly underwhelming for the wait. If you are fond of NY cheese cake, probably this is not the best place for you to try. If you are soufflé lover but wanted a bigger potion, I would definitely recommend it. Please do not leave the cheesecake unattended, and watch out your cat, as my cat loved it.
Lo9ve3r 4s
They ran out of cheesecakes so tried the madeleine. Said it was buy 5 get one free but when we got home there were only 5 in the bag - should've checked on the spot. Can't say much about the madeleines except that it tastes just like any ordinary vanilla muffin you get from the shops. Haven't tasted the cheesecake yet but I'm pretty sure it's a wee bit overpriced.

Got ourself to join all the hype about this place. We were lucky as we only wait for appx 40mins on Saturday morning (we noticed sometimes the waiting time can be forever). And this is the biggest down for us, the waiting time is a bit too long considering we only want to buy one cheesecake (this would probably stop us to come back and queue again).
Flavour wise, both Cheesecake and Madeleine taste good, even better to share with 5-7others people while cake still hot.
Staff was extremely polite. Price might be slightly in high side.
Soooo, as you already know it’s super hyped, but $20 is a bit much, I split between two and we threw some away because it was getting to much. It just tasted like egg and powder. Definitely not going again. SAVE YOUR MONEY!

Been following them on facebook and every time I pass through town, there's always a line but the mrs found some time to wait and finally snap one up.

It's nice, not bad at all but that's about it for me. It's smooth, slightly wobbly and not too sweet.
I don't think it was worth the wait though and it didn't blow me away, really could have waited out the hype for this one.

*Updated* - Tried the limited edition earl grey and honey version. It's nice, can't really taste the honey myself. But it comes across more of a cake now even they still call it a cheesecake.

Jumped with the craze and waited half an hour in the queue to check out how the Japanese cheesecake taste like. Unlike the typical New York cheesecake the Japanese cheesecake is more of a light pillowy soft chiffon-like cake. Personal preference would be chilled as when it was fresh, it tasted undercooked and eggy so I assume this must how it should taste like. The Madeleine on the other hand, tasted like a very plain muffin. I was expecting crispy on the outside and moist in the inside so a little disappointed.

Had to try it out coz of all the hype with lines of people outside all the time. Expect a wait.
Fluffy light cheesecake, only thing missing is the cheese and the cake.
Its pretty bland, like missing 50% of what makes a cheese cake a cheesecake.
I would skip the novelty and get a proper cake for $20.

Meh, 2.5 Yums

Amazing cakes even though had to wait 1 and a half hours in line but was so worth it. The cakes were so soft and fluffy. And the service was great

It was okay. I tried uncle tetsu from Japan and was expecting same flavour but it was bit different (This one was less cheesy). In every 15 minutes, u get fresh new batch of 12 cheesecakes, so counting how many ppl in front of u might give u a brief idea on how long u should wait. I waited one hour and I would recommend ppl to try couple months later when the hype goes down, esp when you have tried same one from Japan as u might get disappointed =(

It’s amazing the queues that form outside this new location especially when you see that they really only sell 2 things!
We didn’t think we could be bothered queueing but the 1/2 hour wait went by quickly as you get to watch the staff making the cheesecakes via windows straight into the kitchen.
They sell a kind of friand which is plain in flavour but quite tasty & soft. Also the famous cheesecake which is baked in a water bath & sold when fresh out of the oven & hot. It can be eaten then, but is nicer when chilled.

Newly opened Uncle Tetsu. Long long long wait for one of these treats. Waited an hour for one of these Japanese cheesecakes.

Light, fluffy and not too sweet. Very similar to chiffon cakes but with the cheesecake element. It's quite small maybe 8inches.

I don't recommend the Madeleine's. I had a small bite and threw the rest away because it was dry and tasteless. I definitely wouldn't buy the Madeleine again. Even if it was free I wouldn't eat it.

It taste good but I don’t think 2 hours of waiting was really worth it. It’s not as fluffy/jiggly it was compared to what they advertised. I also think it’s a bit pricey.

.I have very good reason they give this place a give 1.5 : I am a cheese lover, when I heard they are coming to nz I was excited, THEY SAID THEY WERE GOING TO OPEN ON THURSDAY, and the news was all over the place. I drove all the way there and FOUND IT WAS NOT OPEN,and they just keep changing their opening date again and again after that. I ended up coming here TWICE EMPTY HANDED ,they just ‘changed their mind’ and decide not to open .I guess they want to play with customer's anticipation so they will have a big cue when they open? For what ever reason, I felt disappointed for their lofty stance. They say they are 'perfecting' their cakes, but the cakes are far from perfection.Even I baked the same kind of cake better . Nothing special about the taste, if you have tasted the Japanese style cheesecake/cotton cheese cake before , their cake are just like that,Except Their cake is not as fluffy, it's wrinkled and did not wiggle like they show in the commercials. I hate to say but, the presentation of the cakes are poor. Yet there are still plenty of people buy into it, showing off pictures of the cake on their social media, because its overpriced and require a long waiting time to get..

I waited in line for an hour for the cake, which was nice and fluffy but really nothing special. There is creamy texture to the top of the cake but the cheesiness isn’t that strong. It reminded me of a better sponge cake but nothing more. $20 for one seems too much in my opinion especially since it wasn’t filling either. I think with all the hype it is interesting to try for the first time, but for a nicer cake with more depth I’d recommend another place.

Had both cheesecake and the Madeleine. I first got the cheesecake after 30 mins in the line, it did not taste as good as I expected. Its super light and fluffy but did not taste nice, and did not worth 20$. Today I lined up for 40 mins and got 5 Madeleine plus 1 free, so it was 18.5$, hoping it could be better than the first try since some friends said Madeleine tastes better than cheesecake. But, again I got disappointed. What I only like is the customer service there where staff are friendly and keep updating customer when the cakes are ready to serve. For those who are curious, share a cheesecake with 2 or 3 more friends to have the idea what is Uncle Tetsu’s cheesecake without paying the whole 20$.

Be prepared to wait at least an hour if you're getting the cheesecake. We weren't aware of this at first. Waited in the queue for about 30min until a staff member came out and told everyone that it'll be a 50min wait for the cheesecake but if you're wanting to buy just the Madeleines, you can head straight to the counter. We didn't want to wait, so we just bought the Madeleines instead.
The Madeleines were pretty average to be honest. The outer crust was a bit hard and dry although the inside was fluffier in texture. Kind of bland in flavour.

Overall, I can't say anything about the cheesecake but the place is overhyped in my opinion.

I was excited to try this cheesecake. Queued 30mins. First bite and was a bit disappointed. It is yummy sponge cake and very light. However I think that cheese taste can be heavier. I hope they will introduce their cheese tart soon
Aimee.
Not too sure about why this place is so popular and hyped up. I thought the cheesecake tasted really similar to a normal sponge cake. I don’t think it’s worth the two hour wait or the $20... it wasn’t even that big.

Too soft && fluffy! But not sweet at all. Sobrang light pero masarap naman. (Hindi sya tasty like cheese tarts ng Hokkaido na very creamy) Its better to eat when its cooler. ❤️

I had high hopes for this since all of my friends raved about it in Australia. I thought the cheesecake was okay, it was definitely something different to the usual cheesecakes we have in New Zealand, but still not worth the 1-2hr wait. The madeleine though, is hands down the driest thing I’ve ever eaten and it costed 3.70nzd which was completely not worth it. I heard that they used to be 2.50aud in Aussie and now reduced to 1.20aud along with the ‘buy 4 get 2 free’ combo since nobody is buying those. Hence explained the high price tryna make up for that in NZ lol. I hope Uncle Tetsu NZ will have more flavours soon since there’s only 1 option now. Overall I think the cheese cakes do taste nice and still worth a try, but maybe wait until they’re not as crowded (AND PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD DON’T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THE MADELEINES).
Misscocolitten
I’m not sure whether it is worth the hype or the long queue, the cheesecake itself is light and airy compared to the traditional ones and the madeleine is nice too. However once you’ve had a bite or two, it becomes a bit boring and you won’t have the “I can’t get enough of it!” sensation you have with other food. A 3.5 for me.

I was there in one of their early opening and still had to wait an hour to buy. The manager was polite and friendly though. The cheesecake is not as juggling as it is in the video i saw online, but still super fluffy and melt in your mouth. It’s not too sweet which i like. It tastes much better when it’s cold than when it’s hot. Will come back to buy more if the line isn’t so long.

It's the sensation that swept across the world. The cheesecake that's limited to one per person. They can only bake 12 cakes every 15 minutes so the queue is long and it's mad. Expect to wait for 30 -45 minutes. There are madelines as well but we don't get the Green Tea or chocolate version.
The cheesecake is made of cream cheese, milk, egg, sugar and flour. Taste more like a soft sponge cake than a cheesecake, the Japanese cheesecake is half baked and half steamed, unlike the New York style cheesecake. The highlight is the marking of the logo. Sadly the madelines aren't as good and it gets hard if you put them in the fridge. Very sad. If you want something with more cheese, try the Hokkaido cheese tart across the road instead.
I really disappointed with the cheese cake. What a waste of money. This cake no taste at all, even not sweet. Telling you guys just jump to Donut shop down the road far better than that tasteless cake!!!!!!!

Got to try a small slice for free at a uni club event.
It’s kind of like a moist version of sponge cake; but a little bit creamier. I suppose that’s where the “cheese” part of it comes from.

It’s nice but I wouldn’t pay $20 for it unless I’m splitting between friends; nor will I line up for over an hour for it... overall it’s a nice and lighter alternative for heavy dessert, but only if your pocket can handle it.

Only two kind of products available currently and we went there for the cheesecake. After waiting for 7 minutes, we were told the cheesecake have already been sold out. 😂 Nothing special, overpriced.

The smell of cheesecake coming out of this shop is so nice.
We got to try some today. The cheesecake is so soft, it melts in your mouth. Its delicious and so fresh! It's cool watching them make the cheesecakes right in front of you.
The madelines are nice too, feels like a muffin.
Chary1235
The cheesecakes are amazing! They really are worth a try, they jiggle (a plus for me) and they taste almost as good even after being left in the fridge overnight and reheated. The madeleines are alright, they taste similar to a vanilla muffin except slightly fluffier. I visited on their opening day, which meant a 2.5hrs wait-time, however aside from that, the cheesecakes are very worth it and the staff are very nice.

Was at their secret opening, queue for more than an hour and I guess it is kind of worth the wait?

It's my first time having Uncle Tetsu Cheesecake. And I also got myself the Madeleine . Cheesecake cost $20 and the Madeleine cost $3.70

Personally. I love the cheesecake and the Madeleine but to me $20 per cake is a bit too pricey for me. So I will probably get it once in awhile.

The cheesecake itself is a little bit fluffy and it's really soft. I really love it. It's like eating air but not hahaha
Whereas the Madeleine is a bit hard but it's still soft to eat.

Highly recommend you guys to try. I love it but I wouldn't eat too often because of the price!

I am truly disappointed with the cheese cake. I was expecting the cake to wiggle like those shown in commercials. However, it was stiff and wrinkled on the surface. It was already really cold when I bought it. sigh
