Love to come here to get my Hong Kong cafe food craving. Particularly liked the baked rice dishes, and the lamb casserole is yum.

Love coming here every once in a while. The food is great for a pretty decent price. Always check out for meal deals

Awesome service!! Awesome food, if you are thinking of having some authentic HK food and snacks then this is the restaurant that pops up in my mind instantly. Their service is welcoming and friendly to all audiences! Kudos to the team that runs the restaurant Unsure why the below comments were about the restaurant having unpleasant odours but I go there frequently like once per week and have found their.place to be very clean and tidy without any odours or bad smell.

Very friendly service, very authentic Hong Kong food, if you are looking for comfort food and want HK food, always have the food that I like and very good and friendly service! Keep it up.

The taste is really excellent !!!!Food was so fresh, tasty and not greasy at all like your typical Hong Kong Food.

Great little 茶餐廳, my personal favourite is the pork chop on rice 豬扒飯, but the extensive menu here should have great options for anyone. The set menu is always great, comes with soup and a drink. And the afternoon set menu is one I often get, between 2:30 and 4:00 (I think?) always with an iced lemon tea 凍檸茶 or milk tea 凍奶茶 if I need something stronger.

The portions are quite large and filling. The price is very reasonable. Service was good, had no complaints.

Enjoy the dishes; especially Tomatoes pork on rice, beef noodles in soup, coffee milk tea and also HK dessert.

Baked rice was very good.

Set meal “Fish Fillet with sweet corn sauce” is delicious. The fish fillets are very crumbly.

Small place,with good food.

I would be hesitant to say it's 3 star but it used to be a lot better this place. The beef brisket noodle soup used to be quite flavorsome and the beef brisket itself tender and not too fatty. Standards have dropped, still not bad but certainly nothing to rave about.

The pineapple bun with cheese on top was so delicious!set meals (spaghetti, rice or pasta etc.) were all large size and economical. We were sort of going rush and no time to take photos, but definitely deserves to try anything there. Very limited parking space…better to park off street

The food was nice! Was great to eat Sweet and Sour Pork again after not having it for a long time!

I had a fantastic experience here. If you have doubts about the 'authenticity' this is a genuine thing happening in Hong Kong. The staff certainly did their best to understand us and the server who was on in the beginning seemed very busy, or was waiting for a better English speaker to serve us instead (entirely understandable). They kindly accommodated the 5 of us appearing without a booking. This is not a formal dining experience so do not go in expecting such. I had the Bolognese on Rice with an Egg which was remarkable. My company had a Honey Pork chop on rice and a baked Tomato and something on rice (I cannot remember what said friend ordered). For something new (to my knowledge) in New Zealand, this is a wonderful thing to try, though do be prepared for some potential delays as a more fluent English speaker is likely clearing time to come and see you. Overall a wonderful place, my only advice would be perhaps some kind of communication to the customer that an English speaker is coming, as we initially interpreted this as slack/poor time management on the busy Chinese speaking server's end.

We come here whenever I crave for a Hk style afternoon tea. They offer good value meals between 2-5. Food with drink for between $12-19.
The baked dishes are my fav ( beware the afternoon serves of baked dishes are smaller than the original ) Tasty food and drinks!
A lots of choices of food and drinks. It used to be a nice restaurant, European food style but suit asian taste. And a lots of hongkong style food too. Drinks are pretty creative too, a bit overprice.service is good.

Nice food and fast services. Typical Hong Kong style cafe. Like their menu that have many selections.

Will come again. ^_^

「 corned beef with eggs on toast. 」

My long time favourite hk style sandwich, been craving it for a very long time and was delightfully surprised when they have this on the menu!! Reminds me when I go to the Markets with my aunt, she always treats me to this as she knows it’s my long time favourite.

Wondering where i got this? Just in Epsom! Wandered around the streets and went into Dragon’s Gourmet on Manukau Road, $11with Hong Kong styled milk tea! Perfect for an afternoon tea, I went at around 2.30pm, so their afternoon tea is between 2.30pm to 4.30pm. So if you fancy a late lunch and wanting HK styled food! Try this when you are near Epsom! Highly recommend it!!!

Location is good and so is parking as it is not too crowded around that area. Staff was friendly and food was served quite quickly.

Food was really good. Most dishes were quite nice. The portion sizes were also quite decent.

One of my favorite Chinese restaurants. An excellent spot for a quick bite located on Manukau Rd Epsom. Hong Kong styled food with a bit of creativity.

A great range of varieties of food and drinks. Quick to serve.

Highly recommend their seafood noodle salad, fish balls and clam pot.

The seafood noodle salad has a mixture of apple, mussels, shrimp with well marinated sauce, very refreshing. The fish balls are quite creative, half has a wasabi filling and half has a chilly filling, overlaid with a nice mayonnaise and teriyaki sauce. The clam pot is slightly spicy but well flavored.

Food: 10/10
Food presentation: 8/10
Service: 8/10
Location: 8/10
Ambience: 6/10
Price $25 per person

Foods pretty good, better than what an average person can cook at home. Presentation is nice. Staff are pretty friendly too and they know cantonese, mandarin and english so its not too difficult to order. Can always ask for popular items if you dont know what to order, the menu can be a bit overwhelming as they have heaps of options. But besides that, you cant really go wrong with this place.

3 adults 1 kid
5 main dishes
Total | $90

Still good after all this time. However needs better ventilation and also some maintenance for the restaurant. The walls and equipment are getting quite old.

The food it still ok, pricy dishes however reasonably sized. Use to be a good place for dates but not anymore. As it looks worn.

Service: 3/5
Food Quality: 3/5
Food Quantity: 3/5
Presentation: 3/5
Environment: 2/5
Price per person: $25pp

Everything seem to be average here. Nothing popped out as great and didn’t make me want to come back. Which is why I’ve only been here twice in 5 years.
Maybe the wasabi fish balls were pretty decent?

Food 2.5/5
Service 2/5
Setting 2.5/5

Delicious hong kong style food served.
Came in for lunch with my family and another time with my friend.
Had the Hong Kong Style bread with butter. It smelt amazing. The combination of the bread and the butter reminded me of my time in Hong Kong. Bread was soft and absolutely delicious. Baked rice was flavourful. Soup was not too dense or light. Bread by its side was perfect to dip into the soup. Rolls were crispy and. Curry baked rice was creamy. Milk tea had the perfect ratio of milk and tea. Would definitely come again!

Been coming here on/off for years. A standard Asian restaurant with matching service/ambience. I do like the food here, it always takes me back to Hong Kong. This time we had the ice lemon tea, ice milk tea, shrimp and crab net spring rolls, Japanese style flame grilled wasabi and chili fish balls, baked mussels and the baked pork fillet with tomato sauce on rice.

Everything comes out super fast and pretty tasty. The mussels don't taste fresh and took the longest but still good. The Japanese fish balls aren't fish balls, they are those mushroom dumplings you get in the frozen section at Asian supermarkets. They are done nicely but a bit like some of the other dishes, a bit pricey for what it is.

Overall I like the place and there really isn't a comparative place to it (food wise) in town.
Michael Min
If you are craving for Hong Kong style Cafe food, this is probably the best spot in all of Auckland. The food is delicious and the service is above average for Chinese restaurant. I wish they have expansive menu like other HK Cafe. I would be back again and again for sure.

There’s quite a strong scent when you walk in. Like perfume. Quite off putting when you’re just here to eat food because it contradicts the scent of food.
Apart from that, service is just like other Asian restaurants so I just speak Chinese to them. But that’s not the most important part.
The food is :)
Their portions are pretty big. We got the curry chicken bake and the pork tomato something bake. At $16.50 and $17 it’s pretty good. I couldn’t finish mine and I do eat quite a lot compared to other girls.
Possibly the most disinterested and rude staff I've experienced at any restaurant, ever. More concerned with playing on their phones and giggling than serving customers. Watched them sweeping the floors while we ate and then use the same broom to wipe down the odd restaurant chair as well. My wife enjoyed a vegetarian noodle dish and I had an entree of shrimp rolls (very basic and with mayonnaise as the only dipping sauce!) and a main of chilli pork, veges and rice. Couldn't finish my meal as the pork was under-cooked, too fatty and tasteless. Finished our night buying better food at the local supermarket. Don't waste your time eating here.

worst service ever, over priced and not friendly. Would not eat there again. Not family friendly. Burnt bolognese, overly priced iced tea. Forgot some of the order. My family highly disappointed.

Gourmet Dragon is a boutique Chinese restaurant located beneath a motel in the heart of Epsom.

Friends of ours took us here to try the lunch special. The prices were reasonable, as were the available options for ordering. I decided to go with a chicken noodle dish and my fiance ordered baked chicken with black pepper sauce.

The food was okay, we'll marinated but overall it was a very basic dish. The service largely disappeared after we received our meals.

With so much competition for Asian cuisine on Auckland, Dragon Gourmet needs to find its flare to avoid being swallowed.
Mixed feelings for this establishment. The menu is quite huge (that is good as more choices and no need to be stuck with limited items only). Another thing I like about the menu is that it has pictures with every items, so for those who don't know about the dish, the picture gives them some kind of ideas. Ordered Baked Beef Bolognese on Rice with Egg and Ice Coffee. Rice is still very hot, which is good. Ice coffee isn't too sweet.

HOWEVER, there are 2 main things that are very disappointing (for my experience anyway). (1) At least when I dined there, the girls who worked there, from their facial expressions, it seems they weren't in a happy mood. Polite BUT no smile, seems like they didn't want to be there at all. (2) Number of car parks designated to this establishment is only 3. When car park full, sorry mate, park on the street then. Hmmmm......

Warning, this restaurant has provided terrible service and some serious hygiene issues! I could not go further risking my health and unwilling to spend a cent to continue my food review for such unworthy 'restaurant'.

Horror #1. Stood by the entrance for a while, with a number of staff walked past and literally no one give a care.

Horror #2. There were a few vacant tables, so we took a seat as if this is a fast food chain or food court...except, none of the vacant tables were attempted with any cleaning after clearing the used dishes from the previous customers! There were noodle soup stains, all sorts of crumbs and condiment residue very visible on the table.

Horror #3. As staff finally realised of our existence (it was not busy in the restaurant at all with a maximum of 30% service occupied, there were available staff gazing into the air), without a word the waitress unloaded two glasses of water, one was hot 3/4 filled and one was cold as if it was unused by the previous customer and brought over from another table.

Horror #3. Immediately, we've requested the waitress to give the table a wipe, the waitress paused and gave us a facial expression as if we've offended her for asking. From her unwillingness expression to putting a smirked on her face, she brought out a scrunched up tissue from her denim and started to wipe our table with it, charged with bad attitude and walked away...

OMG...our bigger question was, has this piece of tissue been used by her personally?!

From the consecutive poor service and careless hygiene practice, I didn't even want to touch the greasy menu or anything on that table. So we've decided to simply walk out, even that no one give a care about it.

If Zomato's rating bar can allow user to scale from zero, I would provide a lower score for this restaurant!

Overall, it is quite clear that the owner(s) of the restaurant showed no respect or passion for the food industry, the staff are generally clueless in catering, the waitress who served us seems to hate her job and really should consider to change industry.

Definitely not recommending anyone, I'll not be returning unless a change in management/owners.
Teddyfamily.
Clam chowder soup was yummy and creamy. However a little bit salty to my liking. The bread provided was fresh and crispy, which complemented the soup well.

The fish and spinach baked rice was lacking in flavour. The fish was not fresh as you can tell it was frozen. The texture and taste were not so great. Also this dish had too much rice and not enough white sauce.

The dishes are pricey for its quality. And overall everything was quite salty. Quantity wise it was filling. The building itself is nice and has a modern feel to it. Rather clean environment which is good.

They have quite a selection of unique Chinese dishes on their menu however due to the price and saltiness of the dishes we would not eat here often.

I have been there few times and have enjoyed the variety and quality of their food. HongKong cafe style dishes. I particularly love their grill rice dishes topped with cheese!!

The restaurant is cantonese style. I like the tofu dishes very well. Their dishes are OK and acceptable. The price is a little more expensive than other chinese restaurants. And however, their staff are less friendly.

Close to my brother's place so I felt out of my domain. In fact when I looked on tge map this place is perched in the strangest place for a cafe. It in front of a suburban motel. (Hard to tell at night); having eventually found my bearings this is kind of in between epsom and on the way to newmarket. perhaps like the rotorua motels that have a restuarant in the motel.
I liked the food on offer. It was novel but perhaps not necessarily enduring. The clientele seemed to be the young set .. there was parking outside but clients were dreadful or selfish parkers or both!!
This seemed to be asian food ..canton is written on the menu but was advised by my party that it similar to Hong Kong types of canteens. Having traveled there for work years ago I never came across such splendor.
I ordered beef tongue haha! Where do you get ox tongue in auckland!! Anyway maybe at the depot or simikar hotspots but I was at a mid tier suburban diner..great!
Quite bizarre ox tongue in 3 slices a serving of rice with corn kernels a piece of tomato and a fried sunny side up egg perched on the rice. Tongue had a gravy there was a choice of three but I couldnt read the chinese. Taste was very acceptable everyone I offered a piece to agreed. 4/5
As starters we had some greens but these were served with a oil and sauce with maybe garlic or nuts. 3/5
The lamb brisket dish was real brisket. Really fatty and cooked tender in a sweetish soup. Not my thing but ok. 4/5
Another dish was the chicken casserole or hotpot. Looked like a generous serving but way too hot for me to taste. I ate one piece.
I ordered a mango sago dessert this was exceptional small clear balls fruit salad pieces mango pineapple and jelly and ice in a mango juice. Very large serving 5/5.
This diner may not appeal to everyone especially traditionalists when it comes to food. I'd definately like to come back to try other dishes. $70 for 4 people.

They don't have a very large variety of dishes. If you look over it carefully, it's actually the same, or very similar variations of dishes. I personally really enjoy their baked dishes, favourite would be the bechamel chicken pasta. It's creamy and really flavoursome. Their baked dishes are all delicious, and totally customisable (you can change the sauce, meat, pasta or rice etc).
They are a little bit on the pricey side but the portions are quite adequate.
Lots of indoor and outdoor seating in a warm atmosphere. The staff are friendly enough, quick to take your order and the food is fast to arrive. Downside is the music playing in the background is often a bit too loud.
Candii Cao
The flavour was good for the Poussin but a little bit dry. The bechamel pork chop on rice was average. The best dish was the seafood soup noodle. But the price is high for chinese food. It was $50 for the three dishes.

Service was pretty bad... Waiters kept talking amongst themselves and didn't notice the many times we asked for them!
Mushroom soup was creamy, filled with flavor and a nice consisency. Had the Cheese baked broccoli which seriously lacked seasoning and flavor! Really just seems like they threw in some broccoli and flavorless cheese sauce! The baked curry chicken fillet on rice was ok... Not much to say about it, was quite average and felt like something I could just do at home. The lettuce with oyster sauce came pretty fast but again, a very sub par dish..
If I'm ever to return, I would hope that they improve...

Horrible customer service mostly happens in Chinese restaurant but you guys are the worst one. Not a apology for a missing dish and even told me it's okay which I am not . My main course was missing until everyone finished their dishes and I still spent 15 minutes patiently waiting for my food when everyone was done with the dinner. This is unacceptable but I can't believe I didn't receive any apologizes.

Delicious dinner. Bizzare mix on the menu from tomato spaghetti to escargot. But tasty and well priced!! And right next to our motel. Food arrived very fast considering its such a busy wee place

This restaurant seems alright. I have extremely high expectations for Gourmet restaurants and sadly I must put out there that this restaurant is diminishing from my last visit in 2013 in terms of both food and service. I am a regular customer, but it has gotten a point where I must right about my experience.
This restaurant used to be amazing, with top quality food where the flavours were just unspeakable. There were also seasonal dishes such as in the summer or winter. But now, something had happened, and the food is just plain "alright." The food used to be amazing but now, most dishes are missing that one flavour. Again, my expectations are high, and many may disagree with me. The food is now just a bit below my standards. Personally, I suggest the Spaghetti Carbonara, the rest of the dishes are nice.
I wish the service was like that in 2013- where the waiters wouldn't be sitting at their tables eating or on their phones, and even standing in idle gossiping loudly in front of the counter. This is just appalling and downright outrages. As I walk in, 30% of the tables have barely been cleared, what I see are the waiters all in a corner looking down on their phones. It is hard to get the attention of the waiters. Sometimes (from other visits) they are attentive, but note that most of the times, they are just sitting down. Also, I'm surprised that it's hard for them to understand what utensils to bring. How do the eat a poussin with just a fork? No knives? Before, they would even lay out the utensils, but now they just "throw" it down and leave. The service has just diminished so much!
Prices of the foods are fair, and overall, if you are not picky, then this would be the restaurant to eat at. This restaurant has come down in its rank from a gourmet restaurant to just an average one. Very sad to see this happen. And I will be stopping my regular visits.
Macy
Interesting menu. The menu is intended to be contemporary fusion, and it does just that. As with all fusion-type dining, there is the price tag that is higher than the more authentic, hole-in-the-wall-type Chinese restaurants
Vivien @ KJAS Blog
I actually quite liked this place but I didn't expect to because I'm Cantonese and from experience...people never serve actually authentic Cantonese food. They do note that they are new style canton cuisine, so I was prepared to be lenient and I was pleasantly surprised. It's not authentic, but it's quite authentic and any twists they do make are good ones to appeal to a greater variety of taste preferences or for interesting variety.

I will make a note about service briefly, although the food was the highlight for me. I took the rating a little down because the service was disconcerting. We were directed to a table and given ample time with the menus (good good) but the ladies stood giggling and chattering in Chinese for most of the time next to our table and looking otherwise very idle standing in front of the counter. Not to mention, their proximity was a little weird. I spoke English with my dining companion and most in the restaurant were speaking Cantonese, but I could understand perfectly well when they discussed patrons or gossiped loudly in Mandarin...

Other than that, I liked the chefs here. The place always seems quite busy whenever I walk past and I get why now.

We order two things: the roast poussin with rice, and the chicken steak egg noodles. We only discover afterwards that there's actually a chef's specials menu standing on the table next to us and I wish the waitresses had gone through the motions of offering everything to us instead of just plonking some menus in front of us. There were some things on that menu that looked pretty good and were decently priced, so if you are visiting, look out for that!

Roast poussin is basically very young chicken, and it came served on the same plate as some rice and a basic Asian salad. I think rice dishes coming all on one plate is great, so you can mix everything up for the best flavours, and the way they sent the noodles and its topping on separate dishes so you can mix or not mix as desired if you like noodle soup to be tainted, was also superb. The Asian salad accompanying the poussin was iffy. The sweet corn tasted like the canned kind or at least were suspiciously flavoured, but otherwise the dish was okay. I think it was a bit overpriced. If it was more the pricing of the noodles, that would be more acceptable.

The noodles were my favourite, and having been recently disappointed by a few ramen places I had been craving some good Asian noodles. The chicken steak came on a separate plate from the bowl of noodles in a simmered broth, but that was good because it was positively drowning in sauce and spring onion and bits of crunchy crackling. I would not have wanted that to interfere with the clear taste of the noodles, which were the perfect combination of al dente and had a slight eggy taste I enjoyed. They'd cheated with the broth by using some chicken flavouring powder that still remained near the bottom, but it was still pretty tasty. The chicken steak was especially good, very tender and flavoursome, although rather salty and strongly tasting of the signature yum char meat taste as is usual with Chinese cuisines when dining out, but with copious amounts of water that's rather temporary. I liked how it wasn't fibrous or tasteless, as many restaurants ruin chicken. The separate plating meant you could drain chicken morsels of its oils and sauces and put on top of the noodles, or put some noodles into the sauce (which I found tasted good, but still rather salty) or eat separately. I liked this arrangement a lot. It was all really filling too, and the lunch prices are slightly cheaper than the dinner prices. Did I mention the noodles were fantastic?

Overall, really happy with the food, and they're definitely at cheap eats under $20 prices. Not authentic Cantonese cuisine, but they do a nice modern twist on dishes and offer a huge variety, as evidenced by the menu instore complete with pictures (and all the dishes that arrive usually look bigger than in the pictures). Probably one of the better Asian restaurants in the area. Pity about the service, but let's ignore that. Noodles!

I went there for lunch with my bf. I always go pass this restaurant because its in a weird location (section of a motel). We ordered a wasabi and chili fish ball half and half, squid ink pasta, and Ox-tongue with Bechamel sauce. The fishballs that were chili was really really hot, it had actual chilies in them not for the faint hearted. but the wasabi fish balls were nice (i recommend the wasabi over the chili). The Ox-tongue dish had a thick layer of cheese on top and the rice was flavored. we really enjoyed it too. I was surprise that they had the squid ink pasta which I have been looking for them forever in NZ!!! It was extremely good and I highly recommend this dish. I went into the restaurant not expecting much of it. but to my surprise the presentation, quality and proportion of the dishes met my high standards. I really enjoyed my experience there. I would say this is expansive compared to other Chinese restaurants of the same style, but I will return for more.

I went there yesterday and had to go back tonight. Poussin for entree both nights, so delicious. The spicy pork gave a very good kick. Today i had the baked chicken with rice, so scrumptious.... The desserts also look delicious. The staff are helpful and friendly.

We are regulars. Always great authentic Hong Kong food. Deal voucher comes really handy as well.

This restaurant has amazing food..If you want to try something new this is the place. But dont expect fried rice..Its definitely does not serve your typical chinese/canton dishes. I ordered spicey chicken on rice, it came in a hotpot, man was it spicy but i loved it! They also had these yummy seafood rolls with a special sauce.SO GOOD. The only thing is i would probably book before hand, it was packed!
NYNB
The menu seems to have diminished since my last visit (2011/2012) but my memory could be confusing me. Personally, the options are fairly small.

We ordered the clam chowder, seafood spring rolls, honey porkchop and chicken with 1/2 curry and 1/2 tomato sauce.

The clam chowder was great, came out piping hot with a free bread roll and butter. It was a nice change to the clam chowders I usually get - this one wasn't too creamy or thick. Highly recommend!

The seafood spring rolls are very different to the generic fried spring rolls you get from takeaways, if you've ever been to yum cha, it's very similar, in texture, to 芋头角 (taro dumpling) but without the mushy inside. I also highly recommend this dish if you liked fried foods and seafood :)

I'm personally not a fan of sweetened meat, so I didn't like the piece I tasted on my friend's honey pork dish. He seemed to enjoy it, but i don't think it's worth $16 as it doesn't look like a lot of food nor does it taste great.

I use to love the cheese/sauce based dish I had here years ago, although I don't remember what I ordered then, but you get value for your money with the baked dishes - the sauces are a little bit overpowering (especially the curry one, similar in taste to Japanese curry) but it's not too bad if you like your dishes with lots of sauce.

Overall, id definitely come back and revisit but only because I want to try out the rest of the menu. Staff are very friendly and helpful too, they take away your empty/eaten dishes without being asked to.
