Review Deli On The Corner Cafe - Cambridge

Edmund Lee
Made a stop in Cambridge for some breakfast. Good food being offered, with a rather relaxed atmosphere. Coffee was nice as well. On the day we had breakfast, they had some strawberries up for sale from a local farmer. I thought it was neat seeing local shops helping out the local community.

Wow, what a place The Deli on the Corner was. Had passed this café many times in the last week and this morning called in for breakfast. Alongside a great menu, there was also a very full food cabinet with lots of beautiful kai. Service was excellent, and food arrived promptly, actually before the kāwhe which I didn't mind. Kai was scrumptious 😋 and those creamy mushrooms were definitely amazing. It was so nice to have an extra slice of toast to mop up all the gravy. Kāwhe was perfect and accompanied by a little biscuit, which was a really nice touch. Smoothie was very good, too. Well, it's worth visiting if you're in Cambridge, I know I will be back when next in town.

The food was absolutely great! Quentin got the half breakfast - poached egg, kransky, bacon, mushrooms, toast, hash brown and tomatoes. Let me just say the mushroom was divine. There’s something different with the mushroom, it’s flavorful. Made us wonder if they used wild mushrooms. I got the potato gratin. The poached egg was cooked to perfection. The potato gratin was crispy outside and soft inside. We also got a flat white and caramel cappuccino and they were A grade. Best part of the experience is getting to lounge outside under the Sunday sun while enjoying great acoustic music and the heart breakfast we got. Quentin is reminded of his travels abroad and Sunday’s when he gets to take a rest and just relax. And we get to do what we both love at the same time - people watch.

Food looks really good. Son ordered fruit bowl, banana milkshake and farmhouse breakfast and I ordered the eggs Benedict. Fruit was fresh and ripe. Very delicious. Banana milkshake was the best I've tasted for a long time! Unfortunately the scrambled eggs were closer to omelette and quite tasteless. The hollandaise on my Benedict was almost tasteless and the breakfast muffin(? Not sure if it was supposed to be sourdough or plain muffin) was difficult to cut.

Delicious food, lovely coffee, great music. A+ Hubby had French Toast, it looked amazing. I ordered scrambled eggs with a side of mushrooms. Best I've had. 👌

Delicious chicken and cranberry wrap, big breakfast and lemon curd muffin. Hot drinks and service also excellent. Lots of choice, highly recommend

Wow, had their chicken and bacon salad special. It was amazing. A huge bowl of salad with a very generous serving of chicken and bacon, smothered in dressing and topped with gorgeous parmesan cheese. It is no surprise this little gem is always so busy. Highly recommended!

The marmite scroll was great, the Thai wrap had too much sauce.

Amazing sized cheese scones!!! They were extra tasty with a hint of pickles. Coffee was very nice as was the custard square & apple turnover. Good service & nice to sit outside & watch the town go by. Highly recommend.

Great spot for a breakfast, food and coffee was good. Plenty of tables outside which means you get tositinthe sun and capture the town's atmosphere.

What a surprise this find is in Cambridge. This cafe has great food, great coffee and a great atmosphere. I would certainly return to this cafe and also I personally recommend you to stop by for coffee or chai. The food selection is wonderful too.

Lovely selection of tasty cabinet food. Side room allows for spacious seating inside. Great coffee and the menu items coming out looked delicious.

Great food. Rushed staff missed an item off our order and we had to ask for it.

Easy to get into if you have a walker and you can sit outside. My food was very nice

Food was poor way overpriced. Ordered Eggs Benedict bread wasnt even toasted and tasted stale.
Tables were dirty with flies in there.
I forgot to order tea just as well as cups didnt look clean. I stuck with water, plastic glasses arrived which were a yellow colour due to age .
Found hair in my food so gross.
In a nice location though.
Still feel sick now

The only positive for this place is the location. Food was overpriced and extremely average. $60 for 2 coffees and 2 meals. The wait for anything was very long, and our breakfasts were served before the coffees. Half way through eating our breakfasts the coffee arrived with no apologies for the delay. There is no customer service or even a smile. You can’t charge such high prices for sub par food and poor service. The people in the kitchen look to have a lot of potential but there seems to be a management issue as nothing was flowing. Overall, don’t bother stopping when driving through.

Popped into this cafe for a quick bite and a coffee. Whilst the food and coffee arrived quickly; we were left extremely disappointed by the rude service we received. We were not acknowledged/greeted on entering the cafe by the lady on the till, who then proceeded to drop the cutlery on the table in an aggressive manner when serving our food. However the younger lady who served the coffee was polite and friendly. But the damage had already been done, good customer service goes a very long way...

Had lunch here today..its a nice setting on he corner, I noticed new tables since our last visit.
Today I Ordered a salmon deli pot which I'd had before but thus time it was not quite cooked in the middle it was still a little runny and the salmon was quite salty. There didn't seem to be the same variety today and we were there before lunch. However the service was good and the coffee was ok.
Hubby was happy with his steak n quniness pie ....he'll order that again.

It was cold and miserable so no-one wanted to take an outside table. The queues grew. The young lady on the till was on her first day and was not up to speed.
The one complaint is that nothing was labelled as being gluten free, and in consideration for the waiting patrons we didn’t ask what was or what could be GF as she would have had to check with the kitchen. My wife chose one meal that just had to be okay. The cashier had to ask for guidance when we ordered wine – the choice was limited to two whites – but then, it is not a restaurant.

Contrary to several reviews, we found the staff to be very pleasant and most helpful.

The ham, spinach and cheese omelette was said to be “nearly up to your standard.” High praise indeed – but then, she would say that. The bacon with my corn fritters was crisp and tasty, the fritters themselves were heavier than I’m used to, but I have to use GF flour when I cook for both of us, and it makes a much lighter product.

Okay, the prices were a bit on the high side but we didn’t go away hungry. They will see us back as we have a few more trips to Cambridge to come.

Visited this cafe with my family on the 4th January. It was a huge disappointment ordered chicken pie with salad, salad looked like it had no life in it and chicken pie tasteless and very little chicken.
Service very poor, cafe assistant taking the orders was sultry, disinterested and looked like she did not want to be there, very cold, enough to turn customers away.
Definitely would not return one less customer.

Food and coffee was good but over priced for Cambridge, more like Auckland prices. $9 for a sausage roll, $10 for a pie. Also staff were a bit surly and drinks took a while to come. Overall probably won't be coming again.

Good service, tasty coffee and even better pecan brioche. Happy customer.

Lovely food and service. I had the mushrooms on toast with potatoes on the side (very tasty) and a mochachino (meets a coffee connoisseur's standards anytime). We got to sit outside too which was nice (very rare on a sunny Saturday morning). However prices reflect Auckland prices so don't expect small town prices eventhough you're in Cambridge...

15% surcharge is not much. Try Auckland, they do a surcharge of 20% on public holidays and people are very happy to pay that for good food. My husband and I love the Deli, it's always worth the wait, no wonder so many people go there, it's always busy, great vibe.

----- 12 Sep, 2010 -----

This place is great! It's the only cafe I have been to Ian where service is at its best! Staff has not smiled so much than at the Deli! Everything is great here, if I lived closer I would have breakfast, lunch and dinner there!! Go Deli on the Corner!! A MUST stop for every local and traveler!

Stopped in Cambridge on Monday 30 January for something to eat and decided on The Deli. Was quite busy and waited a while to be served. Ordered two croissants and two cappuccinos - total $33.60 - I queried this with the girl behind the counter and she said there was a 15% surcharge - it was so busy and there were quite a lot of people in the queue - I ended up paying. Was going to go back after we finished but again it was really busy. Would think twice about going back there - staff not very smiley at all!!

Although it was a very busy lunchtime period, I waited nearly 20 minutes for my chicken wrap (which only needed to be heated). In the meantime a group of 4 men and another couple were served their meal before mine, at this stage I had drunk my coffee and my son had drunk his BIG iced chocolate. I gave it one more minute, and then went up and asked where my meal was, girl behind counter said "pardon"!! before I even got the sentence out, and said "its coming shortly"....it then did 2 minutes later.
Service is a bit poor and not very friendly and don't smile much.

Flat whites are served in a very tiny cup and still charge $4 for it. Will go elsewhere for coffee in future for cheaper and a much bigger cup.. I only went there this particular day because my son loves their iced chocolates..

Really enjoyed the coffee and food, I was perturbed over the fact that it was a windy day and although we were inside the waitress clearing tables kept leaving the sliding door open( not the main entrance) and as my very elderly mother was with us it was a bit breezy and no we couldn't move, customers outside were having problems with the umbrellas collapsing. If I was still in the business I certainly would not turn away out of town customers at 5 minutes to 3 when there was food still in the display cabinets. This was a Sunday and yes I know the business hours but business is business. one did wonder what happened to the fabulous chicken pies that were removed from the cabinet. Would go again

My brother and i visited on November 14th at approx 11.30am you were busy but we were still treated with polite and very friendly service one word would describe this Cafe and its food and customer service excellent a great example for the hospitality industry where visitors both domestic and overseas are made to feel welcome with kiwi hospitality and good food

Not bad. Food is ok, service is not. I am sure the waiting staff need to learn to smile.

Wife likes the place but I think there is better in Cambridge.

Fantastic, polite, happy bunch. We ladies ride motorbikes, & arrived in the midst of Market Day.A table was put aside for us. They were busy, service couldn't be better, food delicious, hot choccies superb. Definitely go back for a decent lunch next time. Hardest thing is choosing what to have ! ! ! !

New owners as of last week. What a relief. The staff look relaxed and happy. The music is background - not foreground pollution. Coffee is great, food range and standard better. Tables are getting cleared and cleaned promptly. I, for one, am returning as a regular, as are others I work with. Coffee cards are a great addition. The place is clean and organised. The yodelling and/or yelling from the kitchen area has stopped. We are wondering what else the new owners have in store for us. Good luck Petra, Johan and Renner.

We had lunch at the Deli today, it was brilliant, staff excellent at peak rush hour, coffee and hot chocolate just great too, I had a smoked chicken and apricot pie that was divine, (want the recipe) husband had a panini that was huge.... lovely salad on the side, and the staff really great, very fast and efficient service, our table had not been wiped clean, but they were rushed of their feet. One of the best lunch time eating places with great atmosphere in town.
