Review Mumbaiwala Indian Street Kitchen - Christchurch

Aaron Green
On holiday from the U.S. and craving flavor, my partner and I found Mumbaiwala on HappyCow and headed over. The interior is bold and engaging, with a very industrial India vibe; scarlet, burgundy, khaki, intentionally distressed steel, mahogany and teak and bronze. We were seated quickly, and after ordering, food was fast. The food is authentically Indian, with rich, delicious, powerful flavors. On top of that, they have some amazing dishes that you won't find anywhere else (a chaat with a green apple pickle and kūmara, for one), and the drinks are likewise unique and DELICIOUS (both the alcoholic and non-alcoholic cocktails)! The dinner rush had just started and the staff was soon going flat out, so at one point we ended up with 3 people all helping us (which was great but a bit confusing for a moment), but overall the service was friendly, fast, and accurate. That's a winning combo. They even confirmed a dietary requirement, unprompted. I've saved for the end that we're vegan, but that should make you want to eat there more, because the establishment has a whole separate menu for us. That means there's enough flavor for everyone. I highly recommend!

We are visiting Christchurch and we happened to find Mumbaiwala as the most recommended Indian Restaurant. Loved the food here. We had dahi puri, chicken biryani and mumbai express cocktail. Had Indian authentic food after a long time. I highly recommend this place.

Great food and ambience. We ordered Chicken biriyani and was pleasantly surprised by the authenticity in the taste. The portions were big enough for me and my wife (we had to take away the leftover for next day). I will highly recommend if you are in Christchurch.

Fantastic restaurant. The food is exquisitely stunning. If you have not been here get here soon. You won't be disappointed. Easily the best Indian cuisine you'll find. Flavors and spices are next level amazing.

Incredible food! We had an excellent selection of vegetarian takeaway items. Everything was very flavourful, and had just the right amount of heat. We would highly recommend the Dabeli. When we went in for pickup, the atmosphere of the restaurant seemed amazing, and we were blown away by the delicious smells from the kitchen. They offer a 10% discount on pickup order which is a nice touch.

Our first vist to Christchurch and Mumbaiwala was the first restaurant we had dinner at. The restaurant itself has a warm and inviting atmosphere, with traditional decor and soft lighting that creates a cozy ambience. The staff are very welcoming and attentive, ensuring that every customer is satisfied with their experience. Booking is recommended as it gets busy during dinner time from 6pm to 9pm. Now, let's talk about the food. The menu is extensive and offers a wide variety of dishes, from vegetarian to meat options. I particularly enjoyed lamb dhansak which was rich and flavorful without being too spicy. The naan bread was also delicious and served fresh and warm. They have a good selection of vegetarian options, too, and I found the Paneer Saagwala to be particularly delicious. The portions were generous, and the presentation was impeccable. Finally the cardamom and coconut kulfi was out of this world, one must have this and you won't regret it. Higly recommended 👌.

Delicious! I got the Veg Sampler - smaller portions of 3 vegetarian dishes. All three were different, well presented and tasted great. Beautiful flavours but nothing spicy-hot. And the Cauliflower Manchurian was amazing. I don't even like cauliflower and it was the best dish!! Service was excellent: prompt, attentive but not intrusive. I can't believe I live in Christchurch and not tried this place before. Will definitely try again and totally recommend.

Amazing food!! Would definitely recommend to anyone wanting to eat not your standard Indian food! Especially the items on the street food side were great! Food was all consistently great and came out quickly.... Love the decor and concept will be back for sure!

Fantastic Indian cuisine, best in Christchurch by far. I highly recommend their dabba for one or palak paneer, flavorsome curries that are not greasy and Three Boys brewery on tap. A++++

Service was great, I was dinning by myself and the lovely waiter did a single portion of one of the starters so I could try it! Food was fast, fresh and delicious

As soon as you walk into this restaurant, you will have a good impression of it. My only question is whether the food here can be compared with its beautiful layout and great atmosphere. The good news is that the food here is also delicious. The naan cakes are delicious, the rice is soft, the food is as good as I requested, and the flavor is full.

Excellent street style Indian food. Really tasty dishes. Great service. Post script. We we're only in Christchurch for two nights and this place was so good the first night we went back on our second evening, tried 4 more dishes and these were also delicious.

Nice place, nice ambience and nice people. The food quality and quantity was good. Neat and tidy place. Really nice and tasty preparations, according to our taste. Giving 4 stars only because of the prices, they were expensive.

Wow!!! We chose from the "Street Food" section of the menu and loved the decor of the restaurant and the authenticity of the food. Good drinks list, smiling staff, attentive host.... we're going back to sample the main dishes! This is the real deal!

I had the delightful opportunity to immerse myself in the world of Mumbai street food, where the restaurant's vibrant atmosphere is filled with the resonating sounds of Indian music that can be heard from a distance, and its distinctive decor immerses you deeply in their unique ideology. Our party savored the experience of sampling various dishes from the extensive menu.

A great night out for our group of 8. Vegetarian, vegan and meat options all well covered. The manager made a special effort to fulfill our request for a table in a quiet area. We’ll be back!

Namastey!!!! Best Indian food in Christchurch after long time. Oh my god Pav bhaji “WOW” absolutely mouthwatering. Butter chicken so authentic like Delhi style:) Lychee and pomegranate mojito very refreshing (highly recommended). Very unique decor with Indian railway train like washroom. Staff are so attentive and friendly, special thanks to Aman for wonderful hospitality :) Cheers !!!

Food was great! We had the moong urad dal vada, lamb Chops, kadai chicken curry, naan, carrot halwa and marsala chai. Everything was really good. We loved the carrot halwa! Who thought a carrot dessert would be that good. The chai was nice and spicy. Only thing that wasn't so good was that the lamb chops were a bit dry but the marinade and flavour made up for it. The interior looks really good, they've put a lot of effort into making the fit out really interesting. Service was ok, could have been better. Overall, we liked our dinner and we will be coming back.

We had a fabulous meal, so many varieties and it's nice to try something different. Love the fact there are so many gluten free choices. The decor is rustic and industrial but looks fab and the toilets are worth a visit, very different. The staff were very friendly and the whole experience was awesome. We'll be back.

The food here was the best Indian food I have eaten - outstanding flavours. The chefs did an awesome job. Our waitress was impeccable and so polite and helpful. The atmosphere had a great vibe and was very cool yet subdued. The only constructive criticism I have is that the two blonde waitresses looked liked they had just rolled out of bed - one had ripped pants on and both had their hair flapping around near the food - not cool.

The first thing that struck us was the very personal service of the hostess who advised on her own thoughts on the menu and how we could get a good balance for 2 people. We ordered the butter chicken and the lamb dhanask with some small plates. The overall comment is divine. The food was cooked well, very deep flavours and the rice was very fluffy and light. The butter chicken was quite mild for us but was quite smoky on the palate making it a good dish. The lamb packed a punch and was very tender. The sauce is rich and medium spicy and compliments it well. We were too stuffed for dessert but we will definitely be back regularly.

Great atmosphere, lovely service and incredible food! Definitely a new favorite and a place I would highly recommend to others!

Unfortunately disappointed, my Rogan Josh was just ordinary, had a lack of flavour and heat (below mild) and considerably watery. Good service as it was not on the lunch menu. But appears it could have been a frozen curry reheated.

We had lunch here today. Absolutely loved it: friendly staff, beautiful tasty meals, the decor is incredible and a visit to the toilets is a must. Would easily be the best dining experience we have had in Christchurch.

Great ambiance and great good. Loved the fact there were some menu choices not available in many indian restaurants. Reasonably priced would def recommend

Absolutely Delicious food for lunch and great attention to detail with the location and setting. Loved the portions and the options for lunch and would highly recommend it if you love great tasting spicy indian food. And will definitely be back for more and taste some of the creative drinks too.

Food was below average, serving portions were a joke , just seemed like a canapés. not a good experience apart from distinct interior of the place . 1/5

We have eaten here several times now and will continue to go back for the wonderful food and excellent service. The staff are so friendly and very knowledgeable. Great atmosphere.

Great food as always, recommend the banana prawns and the ghost lamb of you find it all a hard choice!
Martin Brill
The street food flavours were superb, loved them all. Refreshing to see Indian food, more than just a curry. Great flavour, textures, aroma. Loved the presentation of each dish, the service was excellent. And the price, value for money. Thank you for a great evening with great food for our great friends. Will be going again

We had just came in from the train from Picton and were super exhausted and hungry and wanted good food but it was so late at night that a meal was too much. We decided to goto Mumbaiwala and were shocked at first due to the prices. We ordered the dahi puri, cauliflower munchurian and the pav bhaji. The dahi puri. OMG best ever. What an explosion of flavour and perfect balance. The cauliflower munchurian had good flavour but was soggy... we love the crispy kind. The pav bhaji was good too but not the mumbai flavour... over all food was good and it’s a nice place to hangout. For the 3 appetisers we order it was $50! So the restaurant is on the pricy side I feel. But it was nice to the something new in a new city. Try the dahi puri. It was AMAZING.

Amazing food and lovely place to enjoy Indian street food. Service was quick. Just the portion is less compared to pricing. Must Try - Sev Puri, Paw Bhaji, Aloo Tikki Chat.

Superb food taste and quality. Chicken starter was delicious and full of flavours. Chhole Puri was awesome, I felt the portion size was small though, just 2 pooris. But it is certainly a great treat to your taste buds. Cheers!

A nice cozy place to go with your buddy. Loved all the dishes I ordered, although not many vegetarian dishes to order. But I would definitely recommend people to try this outlet. With it being in the city centre it's easy to get to. :)

Good Indian Cuisine restaurant in Christchurch. Theme of Mumbai is splendid. Taste of Food is really good. They have couple of unique items as well like Sharabi lassi.

One of the places you should have on your list when you go to NewZealand. It’s really awesome. The ambience is really nice. When it comes to food, I just couldn’t believe I was in NewZealand. It feels as if all the dishes are brought especially from different parts of Mumbai. All the cuisines and varieties were finger licking. We had Dabeli, Pav Bhaji, Sevpuri, Dahipuri, Nimbupani, Faluda.... also the utensils used were Mumbai types... Even the washroom felt like Mumbai local train... Killed it guys....

We were on a holiday in new zealand and happen to visit this place for dinner . The food was good as per New Zealand standards . The ambience is also good . One star is only because of one of the staff member Mr Sachin Jacob who seems to be unaware of how he should talk to a customer .
Vivek
Its an awesome place to visit and what we most liked here was that they have every kind of arrangement for seating ( high seats, sofa ,chairs) . No doubt the interiors are full of copper work and the utensils they serve the food are traditional too . Food is nice with a lot of variety in it. We tried almost 9 dishes and everything was delicious.

Must try: snacks/startes like dabeli and all others.
Dont try: Goan curry

it was last day of our holiday in newzealand and we had dinner here for starters like pav bhaji and dahi puri were great in taste but for dinner we ordered dabbawala meal snd sabji given was just too sweet (murg makhani and mix veg) also mix veg was only full of beans hardly u cud see any other vegetables i guess only one carrot . Ambience n staff pretty good

The setting is amazing. The Mumbai feeling is real. I loved the decor. I didn’t enjoy my main. My main was pretty average according to the price. I loved the entree.Overall a great atmosphere but very expensive. Not my first choice

Everything is just superb!
Ambience , Food , Service , Management , Decor , Presentation all goes to the blues of sky.👍
A Pefect feeling of Mumbai as it's decor describes an enchantic view of the city.🇮🇳

We had dinner here after arriving in christchurch in the evening . Love the ambience , they have put some real effort into making this a standout restaurant.
We ordered a common street food in mumbai - sev puri. Its was the best i have had in awhile.
We also ordered the biryani - which wasn't authentic i guess - but the lamb was cooked really well.
Overall if we ever go back to christchurch we would love to go back and try their other dishes.

Ambiance - 4.0/5
Taste - 3.5/5
Vegetarian options - 3/5

Ordered Veg kohlapuri and it was a bit burnt gravy. Onion coriander kulcha was just ok and bit uncooked. Overall ok experience.

Overall service - 4.5/5

Amazing atmosphere. Highly priced and less quantity. Not value for money. Some of the food names are changed Mumbai special... even though they come from other parts of india.

We decided to eat something other than Indian tonight but just didn't find anything that suited us. We found this place actually on trip advisor. I loved the décor of the place and the attention they have given to being authentic. The glasses to serve water or the utensils in which they serve the food.

We started with the anjeer shake which is a fig milkshake. The shake was actually good not super sweet. For mains we had the dabawalla and they were happy to substitute the meat with another vegetable. We got the paneer and mixed vegetable curry, rice and main. They advertise it is sufficient for 2. We needed an extra roti. Both the curries were well spiced and the balance was soft.

We also ordered the raita which was good palette cleanser. Overall the food was good. They had some really interesting roadside food on the menu
Probably try them tomorrow night. The entire meal cost us 50$ which I found a bit steep.

One if the finest restaurant in NZ. Just loved the beautiful Mumbai theme based concept. Lovely food variety. We tried Sev puri which was the best and bombay bhel as well as vada pav. Its overpriced though but food ambience is amazing. We did'nt know we have to prebook a table there. Staff is very attentive.

Nikita Sakhala

Stumbled in on a Saturday night and had a very rewarding experience. Charming staff who explain the street food theme and assist in our selection. We have a lamb curry for the main with side dishes and some delightful chicken and squid dishes from the street food section. A mango and coconut lassi is an ideal compliment to the meal for myself while my companion has a glass of pinot noir. A great asset for tourists and the locals.

Great menu offering street food, all the classic curries and some modern inspirations! Ordered the signature chickpea salad with avocado - I had not tasted anything like this before and it didn't strike me as Indian - but was surprisingly delicious and the fried chickpeas gave it nice crunch. Also had the mumbai fried chicken which was crispy and super tasty. Garlic naan was okay.

On the drinks side had marsala chai - super intense and served with sugar on the side so I could adjust the sweetness myself.
Meg
A really delicious modern take on Indian Street food. Lovely to go in a group to do a lot of share plates, which they recommend. Our favourites were the mumbai chicken and sev puri. Would definitely be returning and recommending to others- thanks!

Finally a restaurant with good decor n theme but not worth the price nor the taste. Menu is too small but still the food served is not tasty as you may think. Definitely a miss but you can go over there if you are keen for some change.

A very dirty place(designed like that ;)) with bad food.
My husband and I went there for dinner and were really disappointed. The staff had no idea what exactly was in the menu. Everything was highly priced. And the portion was too less.
It says it's Mumbai Street kitchen. But the food is not. The only thing may be good is the decor. They have somewhat succeeded in showing the streets of Mumbai there.
Masala tea was the only thing on the menu that tasted fine although the tea was not hot enough.
Overall this place is an expensive unpleasant experience for me.

One of the worst places I have been in New Zealand. I went there last month with my wife and 3 year old daughter. First of all, with a child we were given a high seat table. Then my daughter accidentally spilled water while drinking. The lady owner / head chef started marking faces and noise of annoyance. We still did not say a word. When our order arrived, my wife had a bout of cough and the owner / head chef did not have the courtesy to offer her some water, instead she asked the guests sitting next to us to move to another table as they might be getting disturbed. I would say that even a road side stall offers much better service than this place. I would not recommend this to any one. They should have a sign outside stating Indians with children not allowed!!
AK
Excellent theme and ambience of the restaurant. Good service by the staff. But the most important of all FOOD - too overpriced for quantity and quality you get. Even though there are many varieties of food available I would not go again to this place. Paneer tikka - the paneer wasn't fresh rather was hard and was served without any chutney, Dabeli- not upto the mark, Manchurian- never tasted a manchurian that's sweet but they made one which was hilarious. Other chat items were alright to have once. Ragda Pattice was delicious but again overpriced. Being a Mumbaikar and knowing about the street food well, I would not say that the best food in town- you are just paying too much, which I won't mind if the quantity of food as well as quality of some would drastically improve.

A real unique experience - the owners have done a marvellous job to give it a very rustic Indian look with all the modern amenities. The food is just excellent - lot of options to choose from. Starting with drinks they have good collection of beers - tried their Tendulkar Ale which was really good. There is a great variety of entrees to try with few fusion dishes. The mains were good portion and tasted amazing! We were too full to try any desserts but will come back again. The service was excellent and the presentation of food was the scene stealer. They have used elements of India very carefully in every aspect of experience. Highly recommended!

I have been watching this place being built over the last couple of months. I was very happy when the 'Opening soon' sign was replaced by an outside menu and an open door. We decided to go with three starters and some Naan bread. I had the kerela coconut prawns and they were very nice but didn't have any noticeable curry flavour. My friend had the lamb kofta balls - he thought they were quite mild and a bit salty. The Naan were lovely, not too doughy and not too crunchy.
